Wheels & Deals with The Old Car Lady
Wheels & Deals with The Old Car Lady, the UK's classic car podcast for people who love the stories behind the cars.
Sam Grange-Bailey isn't a presenter. She's a classic car dealer and a car dealer's daughter who grew up in the Manchester motor trade. She lived through the golden era of the British car business — the 1960s, '70s, '80s, and early '90s — when deals were done on a handshake, the cars had genuine personality, and the dealers who sold them were larger-than-life characters.
This podcast preserves those stories before they're lost.
Each episode brings honest, unfiltered conversations with the people who lived it: dealers, auctioneers, journalists, mechanics, and collectors. Expect tales of dodgy deals, auction house drama, barn finds, family businesses, cars that got away, and the ones that probably should have.
If you've ever wondered what it was really like inside a British car dealership before the internet changed everything or you just love hearing proper stories about proper cars ➙ this is the podcast for you.
Featured guests include Bond car specialists, Rolls-Royce dealers, senior motoring journalists, auction house insiders, and the characters who built the Manchester and UK classic car scene.
Topics: classic cars, motor trade history, buying and selling at auction, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, MG, Porsche, barn finds, modern classics, showroom stories, car dealer life, classic car values, and the unwritten rules of the trade.
New episodes every week.

Wheels & Deals with The Old Car Lady
Auction Special | Jensen Interceptor Vignale, Rover P6 Panoramic Roof & the Cars You Should Be Watching
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The Old Car Lady is joined by motoring journalist Richy Barnett for the May Auction Special, picking through the Manor Park Classic Sale on Saturday 23rd May.
They go through Richy’s picks, decide where they think they land against the estimates and then in Part 2 compare their predictions with the results - so stay tuned! ……..
Jensen Interceptor Vignale, Rover P6 with factory panoramic roof, Vanden Plas 4 Litre R, Renault Fuego Turbo, Ford Probe with 24,000 warranted miles and a Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution, Sam is at the sale in person, with a Live feed on Facebook.
Featured
Rover P6 3500 V8 with Factory Panoramic Glass Roof: A Rover Triplex collaboration that almost nobody has seen in the metal. Two former keepers, the first owned it for over 40 years. 65,800 miles, no reserve, chrome grille, white, completely unmolested. Sam says she’s bidding if it stutters.
Jensen Interceptor Vignale Mark I: Coach-built in Turin, fewer than 1,500 made, most rotted away. Three owners, 80,000 miles, recent cylinder head and brake work. Guided at 18 to 20. Sam is doing a walk-around on the day.
Vanden Plas Princess 4 Litre R: The only non-Rolls-Royce car ever powered by a Rolls-Royce engine. 81,500 miles, near-new interior, stunning colour and a badge bar. Richy says he’d rather have this than a Shadow at 14 grand & Sam wouldn’t!
Ford Probe 2.0 16v with 24,000 Warranted Miles: Original, correct colour, glass sunroof, MOT to April 2027. The best 2.0 16v either of them has seen come to market. Guided at five to six, both think it could go over.
Renault Fuego Turbo 1984: Best-selling coupe in Europe 1980 to 82, now almost forgotten. Richie has the brochures. Sam wants it. 93,000 miles, spreadsheet history, yellow fog lamps. Guided four and a half to five and a half.
Key Questions
- Are Interceptor prices finding their floor? Both think yes. A Series 3 with 22 grand of bills at 38 to 42 tells the story. The Vignale at 18 to 20 looks remarkable value.
- Is the P6 panoramic roof car genuinely rare? Richie has only ever seen the Corgi Toys version. Factory Triplex glass roof, almost nobody knows it existed. No reserve.
- Will the bank holiday hurt the sale? It might thin the room. Online and commission bidding should protect the best lots. Richie is going regardless.

Hi, I'm Sam, the old car lady, and welcome along to the Wheels and Deals podcast. It's auction special time again, and I'm joined as always by Richie Barnett, motoring journalist, markets editor for Classic Car Weekly, and the man in charge of the special site. And we're going to have a run through the Mana Park Classic sale happening on Saturday, the 23rd of May. We've picked out what we think are some genuinely brilliant cars from this sale that interests both of us, from a very early Jensen Interceptor Vignali Mark I, a Rover P63500 with a factory panel sunroof, and a mint Vandenplaar Princess 4 litre R, all the way through to Ford probes and some really interesting classic commercials. To one of my favourites, a very rare Renault Fuego turbo. You get the idea. So I went along to the sale to see how these cars got on and for a look at some of these cars in the mech. So to watch some of the live auction footage, please do head over to my social media sites at the old car lady. I then caught up with Richie after the auction to see how they did. And in the second half of this episode, we find out how well we called it. So do keep listening for the results. I promise some of them will surprise you. Right, let's crack on. So very warm welcome, Richie Barnett. So here we go again with another classic car auction. We've got the Mana Park Classic sale tomorrow, Saturday, the 23rd of May. So I thought it'd be really interesting not to do a whole auction preview, but just to pick a handful of cars that interest you. Have a quick chat about why they interest you, where we think they're going to end up in terms of sales price and where they've been estimated, and where we think the market's going for them. You've picked some really interesting ones to talk about. So I'm gonna kick off with a lot 218, the 1997 Ford Pro. It's a 2 litre 16 valve, so far, so fine. But this one's only done 24,000 miles and they're warrantying the mileage as well. Completely original condition. Manual gearbox. MOT till April 27. These two-litre 16 valve cars are really starting to get attention, aren't they? What I've not seen for a long time is one in this condition with this mileage in great colours as well.
SPEAKER_01The colours are right. The only thing that lets it down, of course, being a four-pot is the wheel design wasn't as good on the four cylinder. The D6 has had a nicer wheel design, gives it a more aggressive look. But I think they're just highly useful. They're really forgotten about a bit like calibras, aren't they? And this one looks good. It's got a glass sunroof as well. As you say, the colour is right, low mileage. I think there's some wise people who will be looking at this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I forgive it the wheels, like you say, I'm not particularly a fan of them, but I'll forgive it the wheels because it has got the right ones on it. I love the originality of this car.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's very Radwood, very kind of that era, which I think are ones to watch. I think this is a really rare car. Guided at five to six. I think there's a good chance this could do over.
SPEAKER_01I think it could go over, but I don't think it will go over by a great deal if it does. I think it could get to six and a half, six and three quarters.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it's been conservatively guided. And listen, as we know with auctions, you get two collectors that want one. Good luck finding another one with this mileage in this condition.
SPEAKER_01But when did we last see one a probe in an auction and two, one as good as this?
SPEAKER_02I don't think I've seen one with this low mileage come to market at all.
SPEAKER_01It's a really strange thing because there's a guy in Planet, he's got two of them right to outside his house. It's lovely to see it as well. Yeah. They have really forgotten they were overlooked when they were. There certainly is overlooked now.
SPEAKER_02Well, we talk about the underdogs and the disasters, don't we? Some cars that kind of failed commercially were slightly shit, or considered to be slightly shit used cars at some point, are actually pretty desirable now when you find one that hasn't been used and abused or rotted away or used as a donor car or raced. So I think yeah, I think this one's really interesting. And for that reason, I think if you've got a couple of punters on the day that decide they want one for a collection, it could well do over the estimate. But I hope so. The problem is it's in the low mileage zone. So you'd be too fright-depressing because the value's in the mileage, so you would have to keep half an hour in the mileage. So we're going now to the second car on your list, which is a complete departure from the Minty Mint Low Mileage Ford Probe. Lot 243 is a 1990 Escort Van 1.3 project car.
SPEAKER_01Lovely. You know I've got a soft spot for later escort vans, because of course the missus has got a very late one. Yeah. And to see one which is so charmingly honest like this, and I'm afraid anything that has good a set of beefy steel wheels as this one does is always a cracker. And it's a petrol one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's the rare thing. It's 1.3 petrol. It's showing 6,000 miles, so I'm going to I'm going to take a punt and say it's on 106,000 miles.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It says the description says needs restoring, but appears to be very solid. So I'm going to make the assumption that they've checked it in all the usual Ford escort spots before making that statement. I will be at the sale tomorrow, though, so we'll have a look. It's low ownership, it's got nice panel fit. Uh it's got the obligatory bagging of the seats, as we would expect, from a Ford of this era. But yeah, it's a really unusual rare thing. Now, these mint have started to creep up into the kind of late teens. They have really started to find their mark minty mint. So it is proje and as a consequence, the project cars are now worth saving.
SPEAKER_01Mark I and Mark II escort vans are way too expensive. And are they as usable? I know people will say these are front-wheel drive and the engines were never as good. But it's a van.
SPEAKER_02At the end of the day, it is it is a van. It's a van. They are workhorses though. They were never meant to be drivers' cars. They were there to hulk stuff around and and do a job. But interesting thing about this as well, Richie, is it's only got four former keepers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's it's not torn-through keepers. I wonder if it turns, it's not saying anything about whether or not the engine will turn by hand. Yeah. That would be interesting to sort of figure out where it is mechanically. But so to the business end of the conversation, to the nitty-gritty, it's guided at four and a half to five and a half.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I think that's I think that's stiff. Yeah, me too. I think I think if it sees three, three all up, that's about that's what I'd give for it. I've I've been four and a half is very optimistic.
SPEAKER_02I've written down two to two and a half.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah, I think yeah.
SPEAKER_02There is a minimum there is a minimum fee of 720 quid, including the VAT.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So if you're going by your guide, then you are into you're just about a knock it on the door of 3,000. So I wouldn't give more than three all up for it.
SPEAKER_02On to the next one. Um again, a bit of a departure. We're on to lot 234, which is a 1969 Jag E-type. It's a 4.2 coupe, fully restored to a very high level by the looks of it. It is a left-to-raz, it's got American history, series one headlamps and covers. It's a previous five-speed gearbox conversion and it's had a full suspension overhaul. So, look, I don't think left to writing and upgrading suspension and gearboxes on e-types is an issue. They're not a rare car, there's plenty of them. And if it makes it more usable and easier to drive, I'm actually all for it. I think there was a time where left-to-rights were sniffed at a little bit. And I think as e-type prices have levelled off and they're becoming achievable for the sort of 25, 35, 45 grand mark. I don't think I don't think people are that worried about whether or not they started off life on one side or the other, to be honest.
SPEAKER_01No, well I think you're absolutely right.
SPEAKER_02If somebody has brought it in and it's had a no expense spared, left to say I would at gearbox conversion, I'd have no problems about this at all. Looks like it's in great condition inside, outside, underneath and under the bonnet. 34 to 38 grand, Richie.
SPEAKER_01I think that's good. I do. I'd be tempted. Doesn't it look beautiful with those my Sorani wires with the white bands on it?
SPEAKER_02Joe, I love a coupe as well. I know I'm in the minority, but I really love a new type of coupe.
SPEAKER_01I mean worse than you, because if it was a two plus two, I'd be heading up there tomorrow with that. But with those fine wires and those white bands and that that little custom trick of the Mark X with tail lights on it, it's just sits well, doesn't it? Doesn't it look lovely and so usable? I think that is a fantastic car, and I think the estimate's good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think this is a perfect example of how tasteful upgrades and modifications can improve a car. I think it's been underestimated at 34 to 38.
SPEAKER_01I'm thinking him gone to about 45.
SPEAKER_02Bottom end of the estimate, I think it's an absolute bargain. But all these cars on your list are vastly different, Richie. Every time I get the next one up, it's another surprise. Lot 262, 1990 Mitsubishi, L200, two-litre petrol, long bed, very rare, single cab, survivor car. You know me, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You and I have talked, we talked on this before about the rising interest in Japanese communications. Japanese commercials, yeah. And this is just a peach, isn't it? I mean, it's like it's a I like the fact it's single cab, so it could be me and the dog or me and the missus, you wouldn't have to give anyone a lift, which suits me down to the ground. It looks great in that blue, and it's got a good interior. It's got a blue interior, you know me, I love blue and green interiors.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Petrol, it's just what would this be worth if it was a Hilux? Even a rear-wheel drive Hilux. Three or four times as much, I would imagine. Yep. Yeah, exactly. This is a this is an absolute joy to behold. I I hope it again, uh I hope it goes to a good home because it's a lovely scene that doesn't need to be worked too much.
SPEAKER_02I think it's straddling the line of uh a practical usable classic and also one for the collection. It's only done, or it's only showing 59,000 miles, uh, which I'll have a proper look in the metal tomorrow, but looking at the pictures, I would suggest that's correct. It has got an emotional dune, so it's obviously running, driving, stopping, and on the road. UK supplied car, five former keepers, say the rare petrol engine. I think this is a I think this is a really interesting proposition, much rarer than the diesel. I think the price might be a little bit ambitious, but not a million miles away. At seven to eight, yeah, estimated at seven to eight grand. Bear in mind you've got your 720 quid fee to go on top of that.
SPEAKER_01It's six all up. If it's if it's six all up, I'll be pleased. I'll be teased.
SPEAKER_02I'd written five down, yeah. I I think anything less than five, and and it and I might be getting a twitchy paddle hand.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, in which case you know you can move it on to me. Which is right, thanks.
SPEAKER_02Because I've already got a punter lined up for it. Thanks, Rich. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01You know, and who's just seeing? You talked to Mrs. yet, but there we are. No, but it's a it's a lovely thing to see, and every now and then something, an unction offers something interesting. Whoa, when did I last see one of those? And this is a case in point.
SPEAKER_02So we've gone from the four-probe to escort van project to a minty mint e-type to a very rare, very original survivor car, Mitsubishi L200. Next one you've picked. Yeah. It's the Paeero, uh 1997 Mitsubishi Paero Evolution. Uh JDM car, Japanese domestic market car, homologation special, extremely rare car. Uh two-litre petrol, original spec.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Not being fussed around with. Why in God's name would you be mucking about with any sort of range road?
SPEAKER_02This car's as I say, it's on 105,000 miles. It's in the last couple of years has had a resto, including a respray. So that's why it looks so good for its 105,000 miles. And at that point it had the engine overhaul and a gearbox service. So it would appear that anything that needs to be done has been done, but it's been kept in original spec.
SPEAKER_01It looks no nonsense. It looks the sort of thing that if it was it would go mountaineering at the weekends, it's that sort of thing. It would be go, oh my, for s for a serious hike. It's a proper, it's got the right look and it's not working hard to be like it. There's no stupid battery of lights along the road for it's just lovely. I think for the school run.
SPEAKER_02To take two small children to primary school, I mean they're not. I uh Yeah, I look I think it's a little bit of a if you car. And for that I like it's I like its understated reputation. But I'd be devastated if this doesn't reach the estimate of 16 to 18. I think it should absolutely be starting with a two.
SPEAKER_01It's a sad world if it doesn't reach that estimate. Yeah, it's a bad day.
SPEAKER_02Bad day at the office. Next one, very left field with this one. Uh, both of us have got on our list. Lot 268, 1984, Renault Fuego Turbo.
unknownOh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02Look at this. I want this.
SPEAKER_01I remember these when they were new. I got the brochures for them and uh they were just lovely when they were new. I like the fact, and I know I'm gonna come across as a most terrible snob player, so I apologize in advance to all the listeners out there, but I thought they were always advertised as being a cut above a capri or a cavalier mounter. They were seen as just not so big on the engine, but a bit more sophisticated.
SPEAKER_02Bit more continental. Bit more continental. Genefold means fire in Spanish, although it's a French car. So they made them from 80 to 86. They replaced their Renault 15 and the 17 coupes.
SPEAKER_01Which we like as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um they made uh just shy of 270,000, I think, from memory. Let's have a look. Yeah, it wasn't far off. 265,000 they made. Uh, the spec did vary wildly from country to country as well. So this was the best-selling coupe in Europe during uh 1881 and 82, so high praise indeed. Yeah. Uh it's had a speedo change. Uh it has had a new use speedo fitted in 2007 at 92,888 miles, and it's showing 35. So it's done 83,000 miles, which for a 1984 car is not a worry, I don't think. Interesting history. Collection of spreadsheets showing the work carried out. You know I love a spreadsheet. Oh. And it looks like to be a complete car, the headlining's dropped a little bit. Again, nothing that's going to surprise anybody. If you pulled a put a meat in this, you'd get a crowd around you. I'd certainly be crowding round something like this if I saw it pull up. It's worth chucking some money at.
SPEAKER_01There are some bits on it you can see some. Tidy it up. In the body work. Oh, it's worth yellow fog lamps. Look at those yellow fog lamps. Yeah, absolutely. Oh yeah, you and me, yellow lamps, definitely.
SPEAKER_02I I suspect, as with all French cars of the era, what that car really needs is a is an Italian tune-up. It needs using. Just clear its throat. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Nice long drive. So, uh big question, it's guided at four and a half to five and a half. What do you think? Oh, I think about five. Like I say, I think that's right. Add your 720 quid on. Or four to five on the hammer, I'm gonna go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and top it up with the with the I think that's enough. Yeah, I wouldn't be going about that.
SPEAKER_02But it's a lovely rare thing. So speaking of lovely rare things, the next car is another one that we both had on our list. Uh this is super interesting. Lot 212. It's a Rover 3500, P63500 V8, so far, so loads of them. But uh, this has got a panoramic glass roof, and I don't think people realise that these were actually offered as a factory spec. So Rover teamed up with Triplex to offer them as a factory option. And I have never seen one before in the metal.
SPEAKER_01I've never seen one in the metal apart from the Corgi Toys one.
SPEAKER_02They're the stuff of legend. I've I've honestly never seen one.
SPEAKER_01For starters, it's an early P6B, so they're just infinitely cooler by having the chrome grille. The front grille, yeah. And you just and white, I know a lot of people don't like white cars, but this looks lovely. And then when you get up to it, you think, hang on, what's going on with the roof? It's so cool. It's one of those cars that you'd almost if I was extremely wealthy and lived in a s in a muse in London, I would have this for pottering around going down to Club Landing. It's very cruel.
SPEAKER_02It's very well, it's only got two former keepers and the first one had it for over 40 years. That is a rarity. No reserve. It's being offered it's being offered no reserve. I think personally, I think this is uh eight to ten grand all day long. I think it I think to be I think it could do more. I think I wouldn't be surprised again, it's a it's a really collectible car. Now, whether or not people are looking to pay 15 for them, I don't think so yet. But I certainly think ten to twelve.
SPEAKER_01If I had Barnett's motors in Pal Mall and a nice showroom, I would have it up at 25.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Enthusiastic about River P6s. I've had the 3500s, I've had 3500 S's. I love the V8s.
SPEAKER_01Those four cylinder ones are devoid of four cylinders.
SPEAKER_02I think the problem is whenever you get in a TC, you think this is lovely, but I wish it was a 3500.
SPEAKER_01I think that's the problem. I think you're absolutely right. But how cool would you be driving that car?
SPEAKER_02No, it is fabulous. And I don't think they've had their day yet. And I think they will at some point, but yeah, I think this is just achingly cool, really rare car. It's only done 65,800 miles as well, and with the two keepers, it's going to be right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it's got no shilling bit, Sam. It hasn't gone over to reflective number plates, they haven't dolled it up with the later 3500S gross style hubcaps or anything.
SPEAKER_02As it should be. It is as it should be. And let's not forget, there's a reason why so many cars and so many manufacturers put Rover V8s in their cars. They are fabulous units. Yeah, let's see where that goes tomorrow. I'm gonna pull disclosure, if it's stuttering, if it's not making its money, I'm I will have a crack at that 100%.
SPEAKER_01Quite like too. Good luck to where there is, but and good luck to the car. I hope again it is what it's another one of those cars, Sam, where you really hope it goes to a good owner.
SPEAKER_02It might fill my shadow-shaped gap I've got in the garage at the moment.
SPEAKER_01It might, because it's a V8, it's British, it's got one of those lovely thin steering wheels. Yeah. Decent set of instruments.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Moving on to the next one, which I am deeply enamoured with. A lot 2T5. 1968 Vandemplaa Princess 4 litre R. They've billed it as probably one of the finest available. I think this might be the finest available. It's showing 81,500 miles. I absolutely love the colour. The interior is almost new. It's that four-litre Rolls-Royce engine. It is rarer than the shadow. Um but did it come out as Princess 3 Litre, didn't they, in 1959? And then the the Van den Plaa a year later. And then the Vandenplaar 4 litre R in in 64. But the only famously the only non-Rolls-Royce car to be powered by a Rolls-Royce engine. Yeah. Right. Yep.
SPEAKER_01But I remember I'm old enough to remember saying they became bangers. Oh, in the late 70s, they were lumped up pavements on dodgy estates and same as the shadows. Exactly. Again, the sort of car that was bought by someone who really couldn't afford to run it. But I'm so glad this one has survived. And it is beautiful. Look at the badge bar.
SPEAKER_02Look at the badge bar.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, I mean, that's a bit of me. Again, I think that should be passed outside the Royal Automobile Club. That would be a great picture. That would be. That would be a good thing to waft down there down.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. Let's not forget Vandplaa isn't a trim spec.
SPEAKER_00No! No, it's not. I I'm glad you say that. It's not, but people unfortunately think it isn't.
SPEAKER_01But this is a world apart from things where Vandenplaar became just a trim spec. It's a prop.
SPEAKER_02Motor car.
SPEAKER_01It's a motor car, that's right. And whisper it, I prefer them to P5B coupades by a country mile. Ooh, that's a really tough call for me. No, it's not. No, or for you, not for me, this. I just no. This that pseudo roughness of P5B coupés. It's all that sort of oh it's falling out of a guy reaching film sort of thing. If that's what you want, fine. I don't I'd rather have this. This is real there's something about this which is just fantastic. Living in central London and rusting out to Wiltshire at the weekends in this.
SPEAKER_02Down to the country.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, in the late 60s. Even into you could imagine those older retired Tofts into the mid-70s going out from the Howard flats off Cadavan Square down to Hungerford and places like Marlborough with a weekend in food. No, I think it's wonderful. Lovely. It is really nice. And then they'd sell it onto a Soho born pool baron in 1979 for 500 quid. And then it ends up on the banger track. Yeah, I'm stoned. No.
SPEAKER_02But it's stoned. I know it's heartbreaking. So I think this car is absolutely delightful. Is it 12 to 14 grand's worth of delightful name?
SPEAKER_01Any day of the week. Do you need 14 grand to buy this? And I'd rather have it than a shadow for 14 grand.
SPEAKER_02I'm torn. Yeah, I'm selling I'm a shadow girl, you know that, but I I some cars are going to the point where they're so uncool they're cool. And this is come back this is now, I think, a really rare, uh really desirable car in this condition. Oh, without doubt. The only worry is whether the punters for it, like me and you, are diminishing in numbers.
SPEAKER_01Again, he's some he's got resons. He's got very understating looks.
SPEAKER_02I love seeing that this th this particular car stands out for me because of the condition. We do we do see them occasionally, we don't see them in this condition. Which something a little more modern now. 2003 Volvo 470R. Rare cardless.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, in that colour as well, doesn't it? And it hasn't been mucked around with. It's got the original sort of spec alloys. They say it comes with lots of invoices and receipts, which is good. Off with a private plate, I'd be ditching that straight away to try and just get a regular age-related one. Isn't it you don't get you look at it, you think, hang on, where did I last see one of these? And if I did, was it shagged out? Because this one sits nicely. It looks like it has been looked after. If we are lots of invoiced receipts, let's hope it has been properly looked after. Factory standard.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, it looks what we like. It looks original. I think you asked the question was the last time you saw one, but every time I do see one, even if it's on the internet, I always I've forgotten what great looking cars they are.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, they are, they're handsome. It proves, because you mean you are with y your lovely shadows, and mine is very much estate cars. And yes, it just shows that a long wolf can be cool. But you and I Oh I love an estate. Yeah. No, I love an estate. I won't have all this nonsense about, oh, it's an estate car. Yeah, exactly. And he's so blooming useful. But if you just look at he's got that lovely tan interior, the inside looks good, the wheels look good, the engine base clean and tidy. It looks a comfortable place to be, particularly on a long.
SPEAKER_02Wolf and sheep's clothing. All these performance estates are absolute wolf and sheep's clothing. There is a notice, there's a warning light on the dash, thankfully, as with any reputable auction house, they've noticed it and they've declared it. But what a rare thing. 112,000 miles, MOTs. Yeah, long MOT till April 2020. Oh, it'll do that three or four times over, won't it? It's all better on pri of the you're better on the prices of this sort of stuff than me, Richie. It's guided at five to six.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Feels a bit lumpy to me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I would have estimated it at four to five.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't really put my clothing there tomorrow. Well, why do I want one of them? I could buy one of them any day of the week. But in reality, you can't.
SPEAKER_02No, you can't. And and like I say, I think they're very understated. They are a wolf in sheep's clothing. Again, another if you know car. A lot of people, a lot of people don't they don't get them, they don't really understand them. And I think a lot of people will be put off by the warning light on the dash. Unfortunately.
SPEAKER_01Doesn't really put me off, and I'm sure it wouldn't put you off. I'm sure it's nothing serious to watch. Yeah, it'll be sorted out. You can't pass one up with this appearance and this service history. I think it's a cracker.
SPEAKER_02Next up to very rare Volkswagen LT vans.
SPEAKER_01We were to sit down and design a van, this is what it would look like.
SPEAKER_02It's a blooming box on wheels. They just oh they always remind me of cartoon vans. It's like Postman Pat's van, where it's just this always like it's just been drawn, like a utility design, which is what it is. This one's been used in film and TV for 25 years. Rare straight six petrol manual example. I bet this is a lump to drive, to be honest. I was in This Is England. Oh, that's quite cool. Yeah. I I just don't see them. Just don't see them coming to market. And I don't know whether it's because there's none left or they're all tucked away in collections. It is a CATSI insurance loss. Insurer decided not to repairable but decided not to repair in 1997. So yeah, it's it it's obviously been repaired and gone on for many more happy years on the road. So we do a bit of a classic commercial. Five to six grand though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the Volkswagen scene Sam propels these, so I should think it will be on to five. Do you see to be? Because I know there are two in this sale. I cannot remember the last time I saw one in the sale. I saw one funny enough last week on the M4, but it was a camper van.
SPEAKER_02I think that these are ripe for camper van conversions or promo vehicles. The second one that's been offered is lot 279. Again, a very rare find. It's guided at five to seven. This one's guided a little bit higher, give or take, 500 quid. But I just wonder it's a big ass to have two of these in one sale.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. On the same day. That's right. But I could see that red one for when you go on tour as the old car lady. I could see you with the red one or the white one. I couldn't you'd be reading.
SPEAKER_02No, you won't you won't be seeing that, Richie, I'm afraid.
SPEAKER_01Oh, there we are. But you just don't see them. And I they are as you say, they are fantastic promotional.
SPEAKER_02I think so. Do you think one auction can take two similar but rare commercials in the same sale with reasonably optimistic guy prices? No. No.
SPEAKER_01Which one do you think out of the earlier car selling? Yeah. The red one will go. I think the white one will be bad. And I think then it will do alright on the second dibs. But I think the red one will go tomorrow. I really do. Because people will like it, but maybe the because if you said earlier, with the round headlands, slightly different appearance. I think the VW guys might just think it, guys and girls might think it's more, you know, that design in its purer form.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know much about them to be fair. They're not really on my radar.
SPEAKER_01So I'll they weren't really much for me until I saw them, and I thought, what a reminder of my past. They're fantastic things.
SPEAKER_02Best of luck to best of luck to the vendor for tomorrow. We'll see how they get on. Exactly. So I've got one more to go. Um my three picks of the sale were two on your list. It was a 3500, the P the P6 with the panel roof. It was a lovely and pla. And lot 205 is the 1967 Jensen Interceptor, but it's a really rare early mark one, Vignali, which for anyone that doesn't know, it is these are coach-built Italian GT cars. So for the first couple of years, uh 66 to 68-ish, and this one's bang in the middle. Vignali, who designed them, originally built them in Turin and shipped them back to the UK for Jensen to finish them off mechanically. We don't know how many they made. Estimated. I know, typical Italian Jensen collaboration. How many did we make? I'm not sure, I can't remember. And they reckoned somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500. And they made over 6,000 interceptors, so it's relatively small numbers. So they the reason why they're very rare, and there's not many the good reason why they're rare and there aren't many survivors. They were made of Italian steel. They weren't rust-proofed particularly well. They rotted away even quicker than the UK built cars. The panel fit was never good. The build quality was questionable. The Italian factory struggled to work to deadlines and schedules, so orders got cancelled and cars were sat around. It was a bit of a debacle, to be honest. And it was Jensen's return to steel-bodied cars. So they weren't necessarily quality control or quality checking them when they were building them out in Italy. So as a result, they were deemed less desirable for quite a long time. They were used as donor cars as well. The engines were whipped out because the bodies were beyond repair. But now, I think it with a genuine, and if it has, and I'm assuming it has got a genuine vignani body, matching numbers cars, these are the ones to look out for because so few of them were built, and so few of those survived. That there's not many around. This is an Italian designed and built, coach-built, built GT car. Just super rare. This one's done 80,000 miles with three owners. So I'm assuming it is the original Vignoli body. It's had a lot of money spent on it recently mechanically. Cylinder heads have been off, they've been sorted out, it's been pressure tested, it's had a full service, it's had a brake service. The auction house have declared that it's got evidence of a potential power steering fluid leak. I don't know how you get evidence of a potential leak. I'm gonna say I'm gonna say it's dropping its power steering fluid. Yeah. I'm not quite sure. Exactly. Definitely maybe leaking. That narrowed it down, yeah. Evidence of a potential leak. So it's reported to be solid, uh, but it's gonna benefit from some cosmetic body work. I'm gonna do a full walk-round video of this one tomorrow. I am actually genuinely interested in this. I really want to have a proper look at it. It's guided at 18 to 20. At the bottom end of the guide, including fees, it's 20,700. I think. No, it is absolutely heartbreaking that they don't fetch more. I think. Interceptors have. There's this there's another interceptor in the sale, a 74 car. I have known this car for quite a long time, and it is one of the best interceptors I've ever known. It's a 74, so it's a series three, it's only done 55,000 miles, it's got electronic overdrive, it's got sheepskin seat inserts. It's had there's bills on file for over 22 grand over the last 10 years, 63 since new. Uh it's probably the best one you're going to find. And these were what, 60, 70 grand when they were going nuts in COVID. It's guided at 38,000 to 42,000 pounds, which I think is incredible value, particularly given what they were fetching a few years ago. But it is also a it is also a sign of the market. Now, I think if you can get one of the best examples for 40 grand plus fees interceptor three, I do think the vignali at 18 to 20 looks really good value for money just for the rarity.
SPEAKER_01Can you use it or would you get the inch to go in for full restoration?
SPEAKER_02No, I would absolutely use it. I would obviously I would wax oil it underneath to within an inch of its life, and I think I'd be looking at a preservation programme rather than restoration. Yeah. It's had a fortune spent on it mechanically, and that's what matters for me that it's structurally.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely right. I'd use it to go down the shops because you can see in the pictures, it's not the best in terms of you wouldn't be worried about going back to the m my infamous supermarket car park using this 67 interceptor wouldn't worry me.
SPEAKER_02I think there is something super cool about a slightly shabby classic car. As long as I'm I get very wrapped up in structural safety, structural integrity. Of course. Mechanicals, brakes, because I use them, but I actually I don't mind a bit of shabby chic body.
SPEAKER_01But you know what the lead's missing, don't you? Me driving it? Well, from the obvious, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yellow headlamps. It's got to have yellow lamps. Richie, any predictions for tomorrow? Do you think they're gonna have a good day? Uh we've got a couple of things going against them. It's bank holiday weekend, kids are just broken up from school today. A lot of people are flying off. You can bid online, you can leave commission bids. There've been viewings all week for anyone that wanted to go and look at things and then bid remotely. Yeah, that it's a great service that they offer. And of course, you don't have to pick the cars up by lunchtime the following day. So they do work really hard to shift them on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think it's a brilliant, fair play to them because it makes for a buoyant market, which we all want.
SPEAKER_02The podcast will go out after the event. So if you did bid or buy or sell in the auction, please get in touch. Let us know how it went. I had a fantastic day at the auction on the Saturday. Please do have a look at my social media at the old car lady for all the walk-around videos to see the cars in the metal. I then phoned Richard Monday morning and we had a look at the results and how close our predictions actually were. Before we carry on with the auction results, I just need to tell you about a little mission I'm on that you can help me with. I'm trying to find a new home for Stella's Rover. It's a 1996 Rover 214 SI that needs recommissioning. Stella bought this new and it stayed with her ever since. She's 95, she gave up driving a few years ago, and the car has been sitting on her driveway ever since. She doesn't want to see it scrapped, misused, or passed on to someone who won't look after it properly. So it's one owner, low mileage, the file is complete from day one, and I really want to find it a good home. And here's the lovely bit you can enter a raffle to rehome Stella's Rover for 50p. And if you take up some of the buy one, get one more free offers, it's 25p or less. So less than the Mars bar cost when this car was new in 1996. All my proceeds are going to charity for this one, they're all going to the Dogs Trust. And if you use the promo code Rover Rescue, there's two free tickets waiting for you at checkout. So all you need to do is go to raffle.com, R-A-D-F-A-L, and search for Bring Your Trailer Classics with the old car lady. There's a full walk-round video on my YouTube channel, and I'll also put the links in the show notes so you can click straight through from this episode. It's a super project car with a proper story behind it, and I'd love it to go to someone that'll appreciate it. So if you fancy giving Stella's Rover a good home, please head over to raffle.com or use the link in the show notes. And the raffle ends on Tuesday, the 2nd of June. Right, so back to the auction results. How many people were there? Was it a big turnout or was it okay? I thought it was quieter than usual, but given that it was bank holidays, school holidays in the heat wave, I think I was probably pleasantly surprised. I think they got more people there than I was expecting. So I just wanted to go back and have a look at the cars that we had ring fence to have a little bit of a look at. And we did our predicted prices. We are now Tuesday and it was a bank holiday Monday, so the results aren't published yet. So I'm going on where they got to on the hammer on the day and whether or not they sold or there are provisional bids. I am going to talk about hammer price and all in. All in obviously means all the fees and the VAT. So essentially what somebody ended up paying. So we're going to kick off with the lovely low mileage 1997 Ford probe. Whee! Hey. So very quickly, this one was guided at five to six. I know when we had a chat about it, I said I wouldn't be at all surprised if it went over. You were six and a half to six and three quarters. We both had a feeling that you might get a couple of collectors going at this because of the mileage and the rarity and the fact that everybody's shouting about how these are ones we should be looking at. So we both got it spectacularly wrong. So we're stu so we're kicking off with a lot of it. Kicking off with an epic fail. It looked great in the metal, though. What I would say is whoever's bought it, I think he's going to be pleasantly surprised when they actually get it. It got to three and a half, and that was a pro and that was a provisional. So on the provisional, including the fees and VAT, it was 4,220. Now, at that level, I don't think it's going to be accepted. I would imagine they'll be working very hard to either up the provisional bid, manage the expectations of the seller, and maybe end up somewhere in the middle. What they will get, I suspect, are phone calls putting the hats in the ring with an offer on that one.
SPEAKER_01If we could have got it for you or I could have got it for that price, great, but if I was a van gore, nah. Go back and make some calls.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So onto the escort van. Uh very interesting project. Guided at four and a half to five and a half, which I thought was lumpy. I said two to two and a half, you said three all up, so we were pretty much in agreement, and we were spot on. The bids got to 2,000, 2720 all in. That was a provisional sale. So we don't know yet whether or not that's sold. But at two grand is the best offer in the room, we were we were spot on with that. Next one was the e-type, the one that we really liked, the left to rule point two coupe. Now, this was guys at 34 to 38, and again, we were both in agreement that we thought they'd undercooked it a little bit. I said I think it should do 40 to 45, you said 45, all in, mid-30s, late 30s, we would have expected it to get to. It got to 26 on the day. On a provisional. So that will have put it at 29,900. Now, again, I think this will sell, and I think it will sell for its money. It just didn't do it on the day. I'll keep an eye out on the results for that. If that sort of money would buy it, we should all be on the phone to them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was right up your street and it was certainly at mine. I loved some of those minor tweaks and architects and the wide wheels. It just looked so right.
SPEAKER_02But Richie, here's the really interesting part. So this will start to attract a whole new audience to e-types. People who have always fancied one and for 30 grand would absolutely own one, but at 130 wouldn't. So this is opening up these this softening of the prices on them, I think, is going to open them up to a whole new audience.
SPEAKER_01It will. It certainly will.
SPEAKER_02I think we'll start to see more on the road. Yes. I hope. Because the 30 grand classic is one you'll jump in and use.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02So the very cool commercial, the L200, the Mitsubishi L200, single cab, long bed. Right. This one was guided at 7 to 8. I thought they'd slightly overcooked it. I thought it might struggle, but not by much. You thought six all up, so you were a little bit harsher on it than I was. We were both off with this one. It did eight and a half on the hammer. So 9,000, yeah, it did sell 9,220 including fees. So much to both our delight, the classic commercials, as we've been banging the jum for them for so long, do do look like they're finding their they're finding their feet in the market now.
SPEAKER_01Such an unusual thing compared with all the high Luxes we're seeing around. Nothing real, not there's anything wrong with the HILAC, but just to see an alternative is very interesting.
SPEAKER_02I just think there's just a few of the classic L200s out there, to be honest. And I'd get blue interior, you know what I'm like. Blue over blue.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02So the next one you're gonna be delighted with this one. This was the Mitsubishi again, the Paeero Evo. Now they guided this one at 16 to 18. I thought they'd undercooked it, I thought he was going to do over 20. You said 20 to 22. So again, we were both within a couple of grand of each other with the predictions. It did 19.750 on the hammer and it did sell for 22,71250. So delighted to see a result for them.
SPEAKER_01Yes, because occasionally we've seen the hat. I've seen a couple of those around before, and I don't think the market understood them, but clearly on Saturday, people did well hats off to mana part, well guided, well estimated.
SPEAKER_02Because I think if they if they'd guided it, yeah, if they'd guided it 20 to 25, they might have struggled. But I think that's yeah, that was a good job done. The next one was the very funky Renault Fuego, which I took a real shine to. Uh four and a half to five and a half was the guide. I thought five all in, you said exactly the same thing, five all in. It got to two grand. It's interesting, isn't it? So 2720. I know. 2720, including the fees. It was a provisional, so it didn't sell at that, or it didn't sell at that point, but I will be back with phone results if they publish them. And then the next one, now I am gonna have to caveat this one a little bit based on having seen it. The Rover P6 with the triplex factory fitted panel roof. We both loved it. I said eight to ten, you said ten, I thought it was a 20 grand retail car, you thought 25. It wasn't quite as nice in the metal as I had thought. So I s I still think it was worth eight all day long, to be honest, even as it sat needing a little bit of tidy up. It got to five and it sold. So 5,720 quid bought it because it was no reserve. I think somebody's got a great car there. Couple of quid to spend, but what a rare thing.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what's gonna what's gonna be really interesting is to see whether that pops back up for retail in the next few weeks.
SPEAKER_01You, me, and I'm sure everyone else who's listening to this will have their antenna going to see if that stops up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, absolutely right. So the next one, moving on, the uh the stunning uh Vandenplaa, the princess four litre, 12 to 14 that was guided at. And we both said it should. I said that I said I thought it would do over. You said you thought it would do 14, so top end of the estimate. And it did do bang on 14, you were spot on rich. So plus the fees, that was 16,100. So I am delighted to report that there is still an audience for these gorgeous old buses.
SPEAKER_01Good. I'm pleased, and it deserves it because as I semi-controversially said the other day, why would you bother with a P5B in either coupe or saloon four when you could have that? I think you said, Why would you bother with a shadow as well? Yeah. There's just something nobody about those. There really is, and there's a friendliness that I think that car has got, which I think it's sort of ride and stuff.
SPEAKER_02Reassuring quality. I have to say, having seen it in the metal, I think you're right. I think I would have it over a P5B.
SPEAKER_01Oh, good, that's your mate.
SPEAKER_02That's high praise indeed. Tough call though. So moving on to a, and this was quite new for us, wasn't it? The Volvo, the V70R. Yeah, quite an interesting thing. Guided at five to six. I thought it might struggle. You thought it would do four to five. And again, you got it right, five grand. So it did, we were both there or thereabouts, it did bottom end of the estimate, did sell five, seven twenty, including fees and VAT.
SPEAKER_01Oh, good. Good. So it did a job. Yeah, and they'd been in the shadow course of their previous the sevens and the nines. So it's quite nice to see them coming out into the light themselves. It's good good colour. It just looked brilliant.
SPEAKER_02It was in lovely condition. The condition was fabulous in the metal. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, cool.
SPEAKER_02And then and now for something completely different, there were two VW LT vans. So there was an earlier 28 and then a later 35. So the earlier van was guided at 5 to 6. I had to hold my hands up and say, I'm not great with the values of these, but it felt a little bit lumpy. You thought five was about right, and it got to 3750 and sold. So 4470 for the red one. Yeah. The white one was guided slightly higher at five to seven, the later van. And we both had said, yeah, bottom end, five ish, sounds about right. That did four grand, and that was provisional. So that will have been four seven twenty if they took it. We'll find out as soon as we can. And then last but not least. The very rare Italian hand built early Vignoli Jensen Interceptor guided at 18 to 20. I thought it should do its money. I think it's a really rare thing. You thought it was too much. So I will say when I saw it in the metal, I probably would take that back. It needed a little bit more on the body than I had initially thought. Not a huge amount. So I think I think 18 to 20, it was probably guided about right, maybe slightly optimistically, but not by too much. It actually got to 10.5 grand heartbreakingly on the day. So that will have put it at just over 12 grand, including fees in the vodka. Obviously a provisional bid. I'd be very surprised if they take it, but I'll keep an eye on that. But it was a very interesting day, and I think that I think it was a tough day because of the timing. I think they did really well, and a few of the cars really stood out for me, like that Mitsubishi, Paeara and the L200 and the Vanden Pla. The disappointments for me, if I'm honest, were the I thought the E-type was worth more. I thought that Vignali Jensen was worth more as well. But I could go through the whole catalogue. Some did well, some didn't, some did exactly what they should have done. But just concentrating on the cars that we'd picked on Friday, this is where they all landed. Any surprises for you?
SPEAKER_01I am surprised at that, Jensen, despite what you say about the condition. Because I would have thought there were enough Jensen Eastie, the real sort of FF interceptor cognacente, who would want to have a go on that.
SPEAKER_02Why that didn't happen is H H had one recently, but beautiful condition finished off. And that was guided at 35 to 40. Now, put your 15% on, that takes it over 40, obviously well over 40. And I don't think that's sold on the day. But I think if you the market's valuing them at 40 to 45 retail, I don't think 18 to 20 for a car in that condition is a big ask if I'm honest. And mechanically it looks sorted.
SPEAKER_01That's the plus point of them over a lot of the British and Italian exotica is the running gear. But they're buggers for bodywork, aren't they?
SPEAKER_02Especially the Vignalis, because they were built in Italy with Italian steel by Italian craftsmen. They just rotted away. But that but consequently, like we've said before, quite often the slightly shit versions in period end up being the really rare ones now. Exactly. Exactly. And the interesting ones.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a shame though, isn't it? It really is. But and so the deal can be done for it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm tempted to put the phone up over that one, to be honest with you, because if they are anywhere near that ten and a half, I think it's I think it's worth it.
SPEAKER_01It's worth not passing over. Yeah, it's you get my drifty.
SPEAKER_02Of course, I'm feeling fully projected up at the moment. Something like that could sit in the corner till I get around to it.
SPEAKER_01Imagine that in a lovely dark gummack and grey with a deep red leather interior. Oh, yeah. I know it's a change from probably I presume the blue is maybe original colour, but they work so well with either very low key colours or really 70s, bright orange with a white vinyl roofs as well. They are all things to all buyers.
SPEAKER_02I think I know the prices have dropped off, and I know the series threes that were doing maybe 55, 60, 65 in COVID frenzy. They're back down to what 40, 30, 40. So I know the Jensens have dropped off, but I think as prices do drop off, it's the rare ones that you should be keeping an eye on, like these engines.
SPEAKER_01You could definitely do something with that in whether you just settled it up mechanically, so it's absolute on the key.
SPEAKER_02It's been settled. Yeah, it's had all the money spent on the mechanics and the brakes, it's had a full brake service, full service, it's had the heads off rebuilt compression test.
SPEAKER_01I mean, but the engine bay looks scruffy, though. Yeah. If he can he combine the state of that, I've got to say. But the hard work's done. Shabby should anyway. Some of the yeah, exactly. Exactly. That'd be all right for on a Friday afternoon wafting out to the Thlen Peninsula. I mean, like that, or further appeal.
SPEAKER_02Do you know what? It could be a money pit, or it could be the best thing someone's ever done. And that's the gamble. Yeah, indeed. Indeed. Rich, thank you ever so much for your for your input, your opinions, for your predictions, and for having a chat through the results with me. Absolute pleasure as always. See you next time.
