“You’re so strong.”
It sounds like a compliment…
but what if it’s also the reason you feel like you have to hold everything together?
In this episode of The Bestie Space, Nicole dives into what it really means to be “the strong one”—and the hidden pressure, exhaustion, and identity that can come with it.
Because somewhere along the way, strength can stop feeling empowering…
and start feeling like something you can’t put down.
In this episode, we explore:
- How being “the strong one” can quietly become your identity
- The emotional cost of always holding it all together
- Why it can feel so hard to ask for help or receive support
- What real strength actually looks like (and it might surprise you)
If you’ve ever felt like you’re the one everyone depends on…
but no one really checks in on…
This episode is for you.

Welcome to the bestie space. I'm also the call. Breakthrough guide coach tell us what it's like to feel stuck in the middle of the front. This podcast is your soft place to land and your strong place to rise. We're talking real life healing, emotional empowerment, and how to move forward when life feels like it cracked you open. So grab a coffee, take a deep breath, and listen in to some real talk, Besti. I'm here for you. Welcome, besties. Today I am actually so excited to talk about this topic. Um because I feel like um it has sat with so many of us for so long as a compliment. Um, because on the surface it sounds like a compliment, and underneath it actually can feel super heavy and super unwanted and maybe even uncomfortable and like you want to quit. And that phrase that a lot of us have heard um is being told that you are the strong one. So maybe people have said this about you before, you know, you are so strong, or I don't know how you do it, and you always hold everything together. And no, like nothing against those who are maybe using those phrases because they didn't, I'm sure, mean to piss you off or to just kind of trigger something in you, but when you have been told that for so long and you have had to wear that role, it's not a compliment. And I want I want to talk about this because I think we we're often stuck, but then we also want to do better. And for a long time, I wore that badge like an honor because being strong meant that I could handle anything and that people could rely on me and that I wouldn't fall apart. But maybe you, me, maybe we didn't have a choice. So I want to ask you something. At what point did being strong become the only version of you that people were allowed to see? So at what point did they only see your strength? Because here's what happens: when you're the strong one, you become the one who doesn't ask for help, who doesn't break down and have those big, often ugly emotions, who doesn't get to be unsure of themselves, who doesn't get to fall apart. And slowly you start to believe that if you stop being strong, everything else might fall apart too, and that is freaking scary. So I want to be honest here being the strong one can feel like a pressure, a giant responsibility, and truly emotional exhaustion because you're the one that people go to. And maybe the hardest part is that people start to expect it from you. They assume that you're fine, you've got it handled, that you don't need support because you've likely never shown them otherwise. So here is where this becomes a trap. Because now, even if you are tired, and even if you are overwhelmed, and even if you need a just a full meltdown of that big ugly cry, even if you don't want to carry it all anymore, you feel like you have to, and not because anyone said it directly, but because that's who you've been. That's the trap. So I want to gently challenge something today. Thinking about this differently, that strength is not supposed to mean doing everything alone. Real strength, hear me out here. Real strength is being honest when something feels hard. Real strength is allowing yourself to need support. Real strength is letting yourself rest. That one right there. You need to hear this. Real strength is allowing yourself to rest and not always having it all together. If you've spent years being the strong one, this can feel really uncomfortable and maybe even scary. Because this isn't just about behavior, this is about your identity. Because you always have been the strong one, the dependable one, the one who holds everything together. So who are you if you let yourself be anything other than that? What if strength started to show up and look like in your life saying that you needed help? What if strength looked like setting boundaries? What if strength meant choosing rest without guilt or letting someone else show up for you? What if strength wasn't about how much you can carry, but about how well you take care of yourself? I want to ask you something. And I want you to take a moment to reflect on this one. Where in your life are you holding everything together because you don't trust that someone else will? That really pushed me to look deep, and in some cases, there is still going to be a you need to be that strong person, and you do need to hold everything together because you don't have a foundation that you can trust to step up if you do need help. So not everything, just one thing. You set a boundary, you chose resting without guilt, or you just said I need help. Today I want you to practice something small. I want you to let someone help you. I want you to let someone show up for you. Without explaining it away, without saying I've got this, without minimizing your needs, we do that, the strong ones, we do that. Just receive, just accept. That is a challenge. It may seem giant at first, but I know you can do it. You do not have to stop being strong. Okay, that is not what this whole episode is about. But you also don't have to be only strong. You get to be soft and supported and human and still figuring it all out. Because Bestie, that does not make you weak.
