look at this when I come back in August, he's going to say that the grace of God trains us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, that the grace of God has transformed our lives. 00:01:41.519 bondservant in the ESV is the Greek word doulos and it's slave. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:23.520 That's the literal meaning and translation of the word. 00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:33.360 It's translated bondservant because of all the connotations that we have in our nation from 160 years ago from chattel slavery. 00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:42.319 That's why it because the reason why it's translated bondservant is because this institution was slightly different than that, as we will see. 00:02:42.479 --> 00:02:44.479 And so they make that interpretive choice. 00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:51.919 But I said, in a sense, every time you preach a sermon, you're crossing over between two worlds. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:16.480 The modern world, which is where we are right now in 21st century America, and the ancient world, the world of 2,000 years ago, in which Paul wrote this text. 00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:27.199 And before we can really apply what the Bible says in the ancient, in the modern world, we first have to understand what it meant in the ancient world. 00:04:27.279 --> 00:04:42.959 And so he used the picture of a bridge, that you have to cross over that bridge as best we can to the ancient --> 00:06:03.759 You see, in the ancient world, they didn't have indoor plumbing, they didn't have sewage systems. 00:06:04.240 --> 00:06:11.519 People would often, if they lived on the second floor when they woke up in the morning, they would just pour out their chamber pot down into the street. 00:06:11.839 --> 00:06:25.600 Refuse and waste would be thrown into the streets, and so before you even enter the city, you begin to smell the city, and it's not pretty, it doesn't smell good. 00:06:26.639 --> 00:06:37.279 And as you walk into the city, you see people all about, and you you notice certain things about the people that are there. 00:06:37.680 --> 00:06:44.879 One of the first things that you notice is by our standard, there's not very many old people. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:50.000 In fact, the oldest people that you see might be in their mid-60s. 00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:58.240 And that's because the average lifespan in this day, uh, you would be blessed if you lived --> 00:07:08.800 You died. 00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:14.480 And so Paul, when he's in his 60s, calls himself an old man. 00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:19.199 So you don't see very many young people as you're walking through the city. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:25.920 But you also notice a few Roman soldiers. 00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:35.199 And you notice coming into the city a big aqueduct bringing water down from the mountain into the city. 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:45.600 And you notice as you come in, a temple to the imperial cult, to the worship of the Caesars. 00:07:47.199 --> 00:07:55.600 And that's because Crete had been taken over by the Roman Empire in 66 BC. 00:07:56.240 --> 00:08:02.160 So it had become a colony of Rome. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:23.360 And from 20 BC about to 180 AD, so a period of about 200 years, historians call the Pax Romana, the peace of Rome, that Rome extended its rule throughout the ancient world. 00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:33.440 And in one sense, they subjugated the people that they conquered, and they were all under the authority and under the iron fist of Rome, which was a negative aspect. 00:08:33.519 --> 00:08:41.200 But the positive aspect is the empire observed much peace and tranquility. 00:08:41.279 --> 00:08:55.919 It wasn't until the beginning of the fourth century that the Germanic tribes, many of whom were descendants of, came down and sacked Rome, the Goths, the Vandals, and conquered Rome. 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:03.759 But it's this period of tranquility and peace, and it's this period that allowed the gospel to go forth into the ancient world. 00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:08.080 That people were not having to fight foreign powers. 00:09:08.159 --> 00:09:13.279 There was time of peace and using the Roman roads, using the Roman shipping lanes. 00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:17.120 Paul had come to Crete and brought the gospel. 00:09:17.759 --> 00:09:27.840 So, in a sense, God used the poxromana, the peace of Rome, in order to bring the gospel to this island of Crete. 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:32.639 You also begin to notice that there's all these people running around. 00:09:33.840 --> 00:09:43.440 You go to a bakery, and you notice that the person behind the counter, the baker, is a slave. 00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:52.399 You walk by a doctor's office, and you notice that the person in the office is a slave. 00:09:52.559 --> 00:10:01.360 In fact, you notice that almost everybody that you see, that's not a Roman soldier, everybody running about, bustling in the streets, is a slave. 00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:12.320 And that's because one out of every two people in the Roman Empire, on average, was a slave. 00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:36.879 So in the Roman Empire, you had a class system, with Roman citizens being at the top of that class, and then you had lesser citizens, and then at the very bottom of the social structure, the very bottom of the hierarchy, you had the dulos, the slaves. 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:44.799 A slave is someone who was legally owned by someone else. 00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:51.600 And their entire existence was in service to that person. 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:53.039 That's the basic then in service to that person. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:14.240 Now there's several differences from modern slavery that we need to understand. 00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:23.759 The first is that it was not uncommon for slaves to buy or purchase their freedom. 00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:40.559 So many slaves could earn money by doing various tasks, and many slaves would eventually purchase that freedom from their master, and some would even choose to stay subjugated, choose to stay slaves. 00:11:40.799 --> 00:11:48.080 So slavery in the ancient world wasn't a perpetual institution that you were necessarily bound to. 00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:50.960 It could be, but it might not be. 00:11:52.879 --> 00:12:02.000 The other difference is that there were all sorts of ways that people could become slaves. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:03.840 All sorts of ways. 00:12:04.639 --> 00:12:21.679 As the Roman Empire expanded and these armies would conquer different regions, by and large, what they would do with most of the citizens of the regions that they conquered is they would subjugate them and sell them as slaves. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:26.159 That's why so many of the slaves in the ancient world were educated. 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:42.720 You might be serving in and you might be living in Spain or Egypt or one of these places, and you might be a doctor, you might be a lawyer, you might have in Romans 6 6 that the unbeliever is enslaved to sin. 00:14:34.960 --> 00:14:38.000 You remember the definition that we use for slavery? 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:47.279 That you are owned by someone, and that all of your life is served in service to that person. 00:14:47.919 --> 00:15:00.720 So when Paul says that you are a slave to sin, you're enslaved, does that mean that you just sometimes kind of do good things and sometimes you kind of do bad things? 00:15:01.039 --> 00:15:01.360 No. 00:15:01.919 --> 00:15:05.440 What he's saying is you are a do loss to sin. 00:15:05.679 --> 00:15:08.639 You are a slave, you serve your sin. 00:15:09.440 --> 00:15:11.840 Remember your life as an unbeliever? 00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:18.159 Your life was fulfilled in service and bondage to your sin. 00:15:18.960 --> 00:15:26.080 Paul says in Romans 8.12 that the unbeliever is a slave to the flesh. 00:15:26.960 --> 00:15:31.840 The flesh is the part of you as an unbeliever that wars against the law of God. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:37.600 He says, as an unbeliever, you are enslaved to those passions, those affections. 00:15:37.759 --> 00:15:46.240 The reason why you can't stop sinning, that you keep returning to the terrible things that you do, is because you're enslaved to the flesh. 00:15:46.639 --> 00:15:50.960 You look at these young guys that get addicted to the online gambling. slave groups to the Lord. 00:18:24.559 --> 00:18:29.759 There's another word that Paul uses in 1 Corinthians. 00:18:29.839 --> 00:18:31.200 It's fascinating. 00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:39.200 So there's 00:21:27.759 --> 00:21:30.240 He teaches it also in 1 Corinthians. 00:21:30.319 --> 00:21:32.000 We'll turn there in a second. 00:21:32.400 --> 00:21:36.799 But Paul says this in Galatians 3, 28. 00:21:37.519 --> 00:21:54.240 He says, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:21:55.279 --> 00:22:05.680 What he's saying is in a world where you're entitled Existence in life is determined by your social structure in the Roman Empire. 00:22:05.839 --> 00:22:07.039 Are you a Roman citizen? 00:22:07.200 other words, every Christian, everyone who has repented of their sins, trusted Christ in faith, were all baptized with the same Holy Spirit. 00:24:03.599 --> 00:24:06.880 You don't have a monopoly on the Spirit because you're rich. 00:24:07.200 --> 00:24:13.039 You don't have a monopoly on the Holy Spirit because you're a Roman citizen or because you're smarter than other people. 00:24:13.279 --> --> 00:25:31.519 And the answer is, it's because he was much more concerned, not with cultural transformation, but with citizenship in the kingdom. 00:25:31.839 --> 00:25:38.640 And to make sure that you're brothers. 00:26:15.680 --> 00:26:25.839 And that principle of brotherhood to our fellow man is what grasped William Wilberforce and others and would eventually overturn slavery. 00:26:26.720 the wife's relationship to her husband, that she is to submit to her husband. 00:28:55.119 --> 00:29:01.440 It's used to describe people's relationship to government, that we are to submit to ruling authorities that are over us. 00:29:01.599 --> 00:29:05.359 We all have different people in our lives that we are to submit to. 00:29:05.599 --> 00:29:16.799 But the important thing to note is that Paul tells Titus to tell the slaves that they are to submit to their own masters. 00:29:17.039 --> 00:29:21.759 It's not that the masters are to make the slaves submit. 00:29:22.799 --> 00:29:27.440
