SPEAKER_03Hi. Hi. How's it going? Are you enjoying uh this July day?
SPEAKER_01Uh, you know what? It's funny. Be careful what you wish for, right? Is that the saying? I'm thinking last Thursday when I'm standing out in an absolute downpour, uh, the girls across game in Scarborough, just wishing it would get nice and warm. And uh it got nice and warm. And and then it kept going and going until it got uncomfortably warm.
SPEAKER_03But you pray for night games, don't you, on these uh on these?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. And I was gonna say, I can't tell you how much I enjoy baseball and softball games under the lights. I've had a couple the last two days uh at Gorham softball game on uh Monday and been a great baseball showdown last night.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh Gorham against South Portland. So I yeah, I wish, and I realize a lot of schools don't have lights, so it's kind of a foolish statement, but I wish more teams played. I know Portland and Deering, you know, they alternate and they they get some home games that had luck field under the lights. But once you know you don't want them in A in mid-April, late April, even early May, but once the weather starts to improve, uh nothing better.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it just makes you makes you want to get on your boat and go fishing. Yeah. Uh or go write a story until two o'clock in the morning.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's been a few of those too.
SPEAKER_03I saw your story come out uh last night and read it, and I was like, I looked at the time.
SPEAKER_01Two nights in a row now. So 2 a.m. Yeah, this guy. I know. That's that's par for the course, you know.
SPEAKER_03Explains why we podcast in the afternoon, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_01It does, and I will sleep in July and August. So this is this is how it goes, and it's just the nature of the beast.
SPEAKER_03Well, you've had some like the the last night you watched a baseball game that was a really a barn burner, but you've had some unbelievable lacrosse games this year, haven't you? Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we really have, and that's kind of what I wanted to focus on this week, just because we've done some we've had some great baseball guests and softball guests, and uh even including your brother, even though he thinks all we do is pick on him.
SPEAKER_03Well, we do.
SPEAKER_01Um you know he he his podcast was went to rave reviews and huge numbers, so you know we gotta give flowers.
SPEAKER_03Did you get people to unsubscribe after that or to actually subscribe?
SPEAKER_01They might have done it for the month and then but you know what eight dollars is eight dollars. That's right. Yeah. No, we'll take it. So anyway, so we've and I I think we're gonna have another uh really uh cool guest next week from the softball world. So just you know, wanted to focus on lacrosse because there's so many good teams in this coverage area, you know, both boys and girls, and there's still a lot of really big games to come here over the last two weeks of the regular season heading into playoffs. You know, a month from today uh is state championship day. It's it today's May 20th. It's it's hard to believe, but yeah, a month from now we're gonna be crowning champions in baseball softball across, and uh and that'll be it. So uh the best is yet to come, and we're about to get uh really into the the nitty-gritty and the fun stuff.
SPEAKER_03I uh I got to catch a the Portland um Kennebunk girls varsity game down at uh down at Fitzpatrick. And uh you know Portland's rebuilding just like like their baseball baseball and softball teams, but um I could not believe how deep into the bench Kenny Bunk can go and still be awesome. Like you could tell the coach was you know pulling pulling her foot off the the gas pedal and you know it was all it was done well. You just you know at some point you're you you can't stop the kids from scoring. And it was you know, there was JV kids in there that were running past other kids. I'm just is Kennebunk always a powerhouse? Is that it just it just feels like they're always right there.
SPEAKER_01They are. It's funny you mention them because they were undefeated until about 24 hours ago. Uh uh when Windham went down to Kennebunk, rematch of last year's state game, uh, where Windham upset Kennebunk who was undefeated at that time. You know, Kennebunk came into this game undefeated and really had handled everyone, really hadn't even been tested. Uh Wyndham, meanwhile, the defending champs, they'd had a couple losses already, uh, a couple of tough losses early in the season. They lost a game at a TA, they lost uh a game late at Yarmouth, and starting to wonder if you know maybe they just didn't have it. You know, it's different being the hunter, different being the hunted. Uh, but boy, they were locked in yesterday. Uh very similar game to the state game. You know, Wyndham got the lead, you played from ahead, uh, did enough to hold on and win, and um, you know, they they showed that they can get it done defensively. They've got you know two of the very best players in the state, Nabby Trainer and Nev Ledbetter, and they'll both be all Americans, or they certainly should be. They they would get my vote if I had one. Uh, but you know, yesterday it was more than just the two of them, and I think that's something you have to do as you get deeper in the season and you play these better teams who scout you and know who your better players are. And and you know, Wyndham did a nice job, you know, limiting what you what Kennebunk's top player, uh Cammy Keenan, didn't score. Uh, you know, Anna McCarron scored five goals. Well, yeah. Oh gosh, yeah, yeah. And the speed, I mean, some of these athletes are, you know, Nev Ludberg is the same way. Yeah. I mean, you just it's just a personal transition from the coast to coast, get the ball at one end, you know, you blink, they're at midfield, you blink again, they're about to shoot and score.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And uh, you know, to have that kind of speed's got to be wonderful. I I think you're like me, you never had it.
SPEAKER_03No, no, I just for one day I want to have it. Just I'd run everywhere. I would run everywhere. But that that that she was it was striking. Like there's there's times when you see athletes on a field and you're like, that that kid's different. Yeah. I was like, who is that kid? And I, you know, get looked at the program, I'm like, oh yeah, I've seen that name before. But right.
SPEAKER_01And then, you know, unlike some sports where you have one top team in a region or maybe two, there's you know, five, six teams this year in class A that are really, really good, and there's not much separation. Right. Thornton Academy's having its best year maybe ever. Uh they handed Wyndham their first loss, and I think they've won seven straight now. Their only losses to Kennebunk very early in the year. I know they'd love to get another shot at them if it comes down to that, but you know, they're they're having a great season. Chevris, another team. They've got the Brunel sisters who are dynamic and score a lot of goals and they win draws, and uh, you know, they've had a couple tough uh losses. They lost early on to Wyndham at home. They had a loss at Falmouth the other day where they led most of the way. They lost their two best players along the way and and dropped a one-goal decision, but they're gonna be there all the way. Uh Falmouth, you know, I did a feature on them earlier this year. They got off to a great start. No one was really talking about them coming into the season, which is funny because they were a semifinalist last year. Um, you know, they've stumbled a couple times since. Um, but you know, they've got a lot of talent. You know, Izzy Camp scores goals with the best of them. And then Yarmouth's the other team to watch. You know, they uh they had they beat Wyndham. That was their signature win. They do have a loss to Canabunk, they lost to Greeley, um, and they've lost to Chevres, but they're you know, they're close and they're a team that always gets better. Uh Dorothy Holt, their longtime coach, is notorious for getting the most out of that team. You know, you love coaches that it doesn't matter what happens in April and May. You want to put your best in June. That's what they're always all about, regardless of their record. And uh they're a team that no one is gonna want to see come playoff time because they're certainly going to be capable of making a deep run. You know, and then you mix it. You know, Scarborough's a dangerous team. You know, they've had some close calls there. You know, Massa B6's been competitive. You know, I think those top six have kind of separated each other, but we're gonna have some great quarterfinals, you know, not to mention semis, and I think the state game will be terrific. Wouldn't be shocked at all if it's Wyndham Canabunk again. Uh, but I wouldn't be shocked either if you know TA or Chevrous or you know Yarmouth someone creeps into the mix and we don't get that matchup, or if we get uh Canabunk Wyndham in the semis, I I think right now it wouldn't happen the way the field what the heel points are, but you never know. So uh yeah, a lot of good stuff there in class A so far.
SPEAKER_03As far as as far as goalies go, now watch it watching that game. I don't watch a lot of lacrosse. I probably would have played it because of the action, yeah. You know, and you can kind of hit people and physical, yeah. But uh the the goalie position is I I think I I've always said that hockey goalies are ain't right. Yeah. That that is they don't have any padding on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they they just take it. It's a different mentality, yeah. And you see a lot of cross, you it's not uncommon to see uh hockey goalie playing lacrosse goalie, yeah. Boys and girls. Yeah, Chevris has the the Chevras the uh No, no, she plays field hockey and ice hockey. Okay, all right. She doesn't play ice cream. But uh TA, you know, they have their field hockey goalies, uh they'll also play ice hockey, but she's not a goalie in that sport, and then she's not goalie in lacrosse. So yeah, I mean it's not easy, but there are some good, you know, the the goalie for Wyndham yesterday, Avery Adams. She only had five saves, I think, but they were all clutch when it was a one-goal game, and and they had to get a stop. And you know, because more often than not, you're gonna get beat. It's kind of like baseball or softball, right? You're gonna fail more often than you succeed. It's all about you know, what do you do when it matters most, and you might make the one save that turns the game that everyone remembers. Yeah, or conversely, you you allow an easy shot that everyone remembers. So it's it's an unforgiving position.
SPEAKER_03Sure is.
SPEAKER_01Uh, but you know, there's there's definitely some good ones in our midst. You know, Tessa Woodbury over at Falmouth, uh, she's a difference maker uh for sure. Uh you know, Annabelle Renna at Chevrous has done really well. Uh you know, Molly Vickers and Yarmouth has played in a lot of big games too. So, you know, someone's gonna have to step up when it matters most, someone's gonna make some key saves there in mid-late June and lead their team to great things.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it could be the difference. I've always said that the the first round of the playoffs is the hardest by far and away, the hardest round. That in the state game are the two hardest games, I I think. Because you've got to get over the hump. Yeah. And anybody in those preliminary rounds, if one team is peaking at the right time, it could be that the best team, you know, you could knock off a Cannebunk or a window right off the bat, and then all of a sudden it changes the complexion of the playoffs completely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think the Cape Girls were either the 12 or the 13th seed last year, and they peaked. You know, they not they upset Gorham, and then they turn around and upset Chevrolets, and the next thing you know, you're one of the final four teams standing. You know, they wound up losing to Canabunk in that state semifinal, but it goes to show. I mean, then there's another example of a team that, you know, if they can put it together, will be a team that no one's gonna want to see on their side of the bracket.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. That should be a fun down the stretch here. So they they they can't have the two weeks left.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the last regular season date, I think, is June 4th. So it's essentially two more weeks. Yeah, and then you know, a two-week playoff push. They they don't have regions in lacrosse. You know, class A, it's all one class, so you you might have a uh a prelim, and then you know things really get serious from like the quarterfinals on, which is essentially you know the the final eight, and then the semis is the final four, and then you get to the state game. But you know, and I should mention also in Class B, uh Greeley, uh they won the championship in 2022, 23-24, and they came within a whisker of upsetting Freeport in the semis last year. Took them to overtime, an absolute epic game. Uh Greeley actually hit the post in overtime there. They were that close, and they they probably would have won another title. Um, so they've used that as fuel. They returned a lot. Uh Freeport graduated, they're top players. Um so you know, they've struggled a little bit, although I think they're going to be really dangerous if and when those two teams meet. They had a great regular season matchup a few weeks back. The Greeley survived by a goal. It seems like whenever they play, it's an 8-7 game. It not only does it have to be a one-goal game, the score has to be 8-7, although that wasn't the case in the playoffs last year. So, you know, I for selfish reasons hope that Greeley and Freeport don't end up playing each other until the state game. Yeah, you know, last year they were clearly you know the top teams and they want to play in the semis. Um, you know, so they produced an epic and then the state game, although you know Mount Arrat did give Freeport a good game, yeah, it wasn't quite as dramatic. So that's the one thing we can't control with all this is the heel points. And yeah, you know, you hop you hope you get that good matchup, but you don't you you don't know, and you know, you just kind of have to see how that all works out.
SPEAKER_03I mean, with the way the heel points work, you you could have one kid injured, you know, that your best player, top goal scorer injured, and you lose a game to a to a team that is kind of right on that cusp, and then they squeak into that preliminary game, and then the next thing you know, if your kid's not back, now you're bellying against a team that might be a you know a six or a seven as a you know as a two seed, that's rough. It's rough, but it but it makes for great playoffs. I mean it makes for for great playoff games and uh and and intensity. So that's cool. Yeah, what about the uh um the boys side? Is it uh similarly there's not as many teams at the top.
SPEAKER_01I think um clearly TA and Falmouth, they look like they're on a collision course after meeting last year in that you know the famous state game where Falmouth came in being touted as the greatest team ever. Yes. They had killed TA twice in the regular season, and then in a blink of an eye, their quest for perfection went by the wayside. Yes. TA played almost a perfect game. Uh the still probably the biggest upset I've ever seen. You know, certainly at that level.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um and then TA returned a ton this year. Falmouth graduated a lot, they still have a lot of real talent, but um, they haven't been pushed too much yet. Falmouth actually did get a test from Cape last night, uh, wound up winning that nine to five. And then on Friday, they've got Yarmouth, and Yarmouth is the third team in Class A. They're the two-time defending B champs. They've moved up this year, they've proved that they're you know they're legit. They have a one-goal loss to Cape, they've beaten everyone else, and right now they're they're really humming. So something's got to give that showdown Friday in in Falmouth, and uh be curious to see how that goes. And then, you know, you've got TA. They haven't been serious, you know. Deering gave them a close game, but for the most part, they've really dominated everyone. You know, they still have Yarmouth and Falmouth on their schedule. You know, Falmouth TA, they play uh I think it's either the last or the next to last regular season game. So that might be for the one seed. Although if they're one-two, it won't really matter. If both teams get to the state game, it's just gonna be who wears white, basically.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, but you know, so far those teams are on a collision course, but I think Yarmouth's the one team that could maybe crash that party.
SPEAKER_03It sounds like the heel points may come into play more so in the boy on the boys' side than on the girls' side. True, right? Unless unless there's some upsets, you know, late, late in the season. But if you've got a bunch of middle of the road teams, it's all who you beat.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I don't, you know, and if you're the third team, it's almost like, you know, do we want to avoid Felmouth or do we want to avoid TA? And I don't think there's a right answer to that. It's gonna be it's gonna be tough. And then by the time you get to the state semis, they're at a neutral, you know, they they've moved those now to a neutral uh spot and they call them divisional championships. And I'm still waiting to find out what division it is, if it's the Norris or if it's the Smythe or American League East. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the central to the Capital divisions. But anyway, that's a that's a whole other tangent for another day. Um but so you know, there's gonna be some great games coming up, not only to end the regular season. And then you got teams like Scarborough who's surging. Uh they beat Uh Deering in a double overtime classic here a couple weeks ago where they tied the game with literally one second left and then won it in OT. Uh they have a win over Cape, which was big. So, you know, CAPE has really struggled, but I don't think anyone's gonna want to play them. You know, you have a pedigree like that. No one wants to play you in the playoffs. Yeah, they'll figure it out, they'll give somebody their best effort, you know, whether it's good enough to spring an upset, we'll see. Uh, but you know, for my money, those top three teams are the top three teams, and Yarmouth's gonna have a couple opportunities to prove that yeah, we're not the third team. You know, we might be second or first. And uh, you know, like I I really look forward to those showdowns there coming up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, what about on the B side?
SPEAKER_01You know, the B side's interesting. There's and you know, one of the reasons lacrosse went to three classes was to give a lot more schools opportunities to win championships and really, you know, develop his competitive programs. And um, you know, you see it on the boys and girls, and I didn't mention class C on the girls' side where you've got you've got teams. Uh, you know, last year you had uh Morano Cook and Trape playing in the state final. And no, you know, no one in a million years would have dreamed that would happen. Right. Uh you know, Morano Cook had an opportunity to win a championship that in previous years just probably wouldn't have happened. Um, you know, Wells is having an excellent season, they're gonna be tough, and then you have the powers like NYA and Wayne Fleet, uh, who are you know competitive but down a little bit, and it really opens the door. So that's been awesome on the girls' side, and then you know, back to the boys with with Class B.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh, you know, a lot of teams uh you know vying for that. And the and the big thing is now Yarmouth's out. You know, for the last couple of years it was Yarmouth and York. They were gonna have a state game showdown. The last two years it went to overtime, both epic wins for Yarmouth in in overtime. Um this year there's you know, who's who's gonna be that team that steps in? Uh York seems like they're down a little bit, but everyone still you know considers them a top contender. Uh, you know, I think Messelonski's a team to watch, no question. Greeley, they struggled early, but they're on the rise. You know, Freeport's a team that's got some tough, close losses, but is capable of beating anyone on a given day. So it's gonna be fun uh to see you know who who can emerge. And you know, Class C, uh, NYA is the reigning champ, and and they've they've won some big games this year. They look like they have what it takes to make another run, but uh, you know, they're gonna get pushed too. You know, Boranico gave them a great game in the state game last season. Um so you know, they'll be in the hunt. And um, it's it's just nice to, you know, for years, state championship day was about Cape and Falmouth and Yarmouth and NYA, whatever. Yeah, um, you know, now we're seeing some new teams mixed in, and it's great for the state. All the state games are here at During, which are which is wonderful. Uh, you've got the two Class B championships on Friday night, and then the next day you got the A's and the C's, and um, you know, that's always an amazing day. I mean, I can get all my state championship games in one spot. It unfortunately, baseball and softball play their state games the same day. Yeah, um, so that's hard. You know, I can you know that's one time being one person, it's it's pretty difficult, and you can't be everywhere you want.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, again, you just need to teach me how to write. Yeah. And then I'll uh I'll take care of it.
SPEAKER_01I tell you what, if Portland baseball gets to states, I'll turn it over to you. Okay, great. You can have the video, you can do it all.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'll him and Hammond and Hob and um um this and that. Um you know what's it's cool. I uh uh Deering's uh let's see, Portland is gonna play Mount Blue. Never in a million years did I think that you would hear those words. Like you, you know, it's kind of cool how they mix it up. Right. I do like that.
SPEAKER_01And especially with the statewide playoffs, you get you know, I I've there have been years that like Bangor comes down here and plays Chevros or Falmouth, and you know, and I love it because they'll play it like two in the afternoon or whatever, so I can get that one in and I can then I can go do something else. So yeah, you get you get some crazy matchups, the sport has grown, you know, unbelievably.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And like you say, I mean, if you'd have that opportunity when you were younger, it's the uh you know, it's the gladiator appeal, it's it's the speed, it's the hitting. Yeah, um, and it's not you know it's not an easy sport to play. I mean, once you get the stick work down, um, you know, anyone that who's athletic can can do it. And then girls is very different because their sticks are different. You can't just, you know, you can't just hold the ball, you have to you have to constantly rock it and cradle it. Um so that that's a whole other skill in and of itself. They're very different sports in a lot of ways. You know, the boys' game is obviously very physical, the girls isn't. Yeah, yeah, it's more about grace and you know doing things. Although they do they like to hang they're rough.
SPEAKER_03I mean they they are they're rough with each other, they don't mess around.
SPEAKER_01No, they'll they'll get away with what they can get away with. Um but you know, there is some physicality there, but they are definite different sports. But you know, I my first state game was 2001, and back then it was one you know, one class. It was Cape NYA and Yarmouth pretty much every year battling uh on the boys' side, and then you had you know Wayne Fleet Yarmouth, NYA, and uh Kenabunk on the girls, yeah. You know, in some cases that hasn't changed. Yeah, uh, but there's also been instances where other schools that you wouldn't dream of being successful in lacrosse have gotten real you know, Portland had that great run late in the aughts, and uh you know, when Eric Bagonia was the coach and they won a championship in 2009, and you know, Ryan Jergolevich was the goal week on that team, now he's the head coach of the Bulldogs. So it and that's kind of cool. You know, I've a lot of the lacrosse coaches are kids that I covered, which is you know, which is bittersweet.
SPEAKER_03I mean you're in your you're in your 40s now, so no, that was a long time ago.
SPEAKER_01But there's I've noticed you know there's a lot of that now, and it's great that you know so many are giving back, you know, either the program that they played for or for someone else. And uh, you know, it's a nice infusion of youth. You still have some you know really good veteran coaches, but yeah, um you know there's a lot of new blood too, and there's just a lot of excitement around it. So you know it's gonna be a great end of the season.
SPEAKER_03So the uh the real reason why you like the games being at during high school is because it's two miles from your house. That is that is that is a big reason.
SPEAKER_01Although when they were at Fitzy, that's only a few more minutes. But yes, I mean that you really couldn't have them closer. Maybe Chevrolet's is slightly closer, but yeah, yeah, I mean, this is uh this is you set up nicely.
SPEAKER_03It's very nice that's uh they probably did it because of you. Yes, because all these things are always with consideration of my schedule. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01So that's that's that's not true. But if I, you know, if I have two games Friday night and then I have to be back there at like 9 30 on Saturday, it's nice that I don't have to make a long trip. And you know, some of the other sports, you know, the soccer state games, I've been to Bangor and Hamden and you know, places like that, and basketball, go up to Bangor or Augusta occasionally for state games. Uh lacrosse I know is right here in the backyard, so that's always good.
SPEAKER_03I have to tip my uh cap to uh to officials. There's this massive shortage of official uh officials around um the whole state, and really the whole country, but in the state of Maine. And to to watch the the boys played at Bonnie Eagle yesterday, and that field is like an oven. And there was a little cross go game going on right behind us. Right. And I watched these two referees walk out there and I watched Sean McCurdy behind the plate, and I was like, that that they're not getting paid that much. No, you know, it's less than a hundred bucks to do the game in your not ideal conditions. No, and they're they're out there doing it, so you gotta tip your cap to those uh those officials and those who are uh who are listening take it easy on them because they are they're they're doing God's work for very little money.
SPEAKER_01And it's so true, and you hear all the time how there's a shortage, and yeah, and you know, you've got a lot of older officials in a lot of these sports, and you know, you gotta love them and appreciate what they do, but you know, these sports need an infusion of of younger people, and you know, you hope you you know if they we don't have officials, we don't have games, right? And we certainly hope we don't get to that point. But I know you know some sports, they're really uh you know, it's getting down there and it makes it difficult. And you know, there's some days where you can't have every game scheduled because there's just not enough officials to go around. Yeah, you know, you hear about that from time to time. So yeah, no, I hope uh, you know, it it the job comes with uh a lot of challenges, yeah, but you know, the the good ones are are fabulous, and you know, you hopefully some of the younger people or former coaches, which I see all the time, yeah, want to get involved on that end of it. It it's much appreciated. It's it's funny. Occasionally I'll see a c former coach uh suddenly becoming an official, and it's like, wow. Yeah, that uh you know, there might be some karma coming your way based from what you were you know you were like, but you know, it it's great they're they're giving back and they certainly have a great understanding of the game. So good stuff.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's awesome. I look forward to uh this warm weather keeping up as much as we complain about uh the heat. I'd rather have this than the winter that we had. It's it's it's wonderful.
SPEAKER_01Four turn in the corner, no doubt. And it's all gonna come to a conclusion here really, really fast this next month.
SPEAKER_03Spring season.
SPEAKER_01It is, it's crazy, and then of course you got everything else with all the problems that have either happened or are coming, and then all the graduation activities. It's it's a very busy time for seniors and you know, just the kids as a whole, but it's it's a fun time of year too, and you gotta love the fact that things are starting to take a turn for the better.
SPEAKER_03Well, I look forward to my uh my writing lesson. Okay, well we'll get on.

SPEAKER_03Well, thanks uh thanks for the update, and uh I guess good luck to the teams, yeah.
