00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:37.199 Right? 00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:43.360 What is it that causes us to wonder if he's really present and if he's really if he's really at work? 00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:52.879 Um uh you know, 2 Corinthians chapter 4, verse 16, that we read, he says uh, we do not lose heart. 00:05:53.040 --> 00:05:54.240 This is how he starts. 00:05:54.560 --> 00:05:55.839 We do not lose heart. 00:05:56.079 --> 00:05:58.399 Well, what does it mean if Paul's writing this? 00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:00.639 It means that we lose heart, right? 00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:11.839 Uh it means that uh it means that we are constantly uh losing heart and getting discouraged and forgetting what's true and good about God and uh and who he is. 00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:19.199 We have a tendency to grow discouraged, even apathetic about life and uh and our faith. 00:06:20.079 --> 00:06:29.360 And at the heart of this discouragement, at the heart of maybe uh this apathy is a misunderstanding uh about about God. 00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:29.839 Right? 00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:31.839 We ask the question, is God even here? 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:35.120 Does he even care about uh about these moments? 00:06:35.439 --> 00:06:44.240 Um when we ask those questions, it's it's because we we uh we misunderstand who God is and what uh and what he's like. 00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:51.600 See, I know I struggle to uh uh to see and believe God's working in those boring everyday moments sometimes. 00:06:51.759 --> 00:07:04.000 Uh like I said, sometimes I think it's just you know, you're moving so quickly and going from one thing to the next, there's not even time to uh to really think about it, or I'm just trying to get through to something uh to something better. 00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:10.800 And uh and so and so what causes us to wonder those things, and it's this misunderstanding we have about God. 00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:18.879 We misunderstand that he actually cares about those seemingly insignificant moments in uh in our life. 00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:22.959 It can be easy to think, well, God's He's so big, right? 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:25.199 He's he's got a lot on his plate. 00:07:25.519 --> 00:07:28.800 He's dealing with wars and earthquakes and all sorts of things. 00:07:29.040 --> 00:07:37.839 How could he have time uh for uh for me as um doing the dishes or as uh or as I'm driving to the store? 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:49.519 Maybe we think, I don't want to bother God in these small moments because I know there's gonna be a day where something big happens and I want him to be all rested up, right? 00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:54.480 So that so that he can really show up and help me uh when uh when I when I need him most. 00:07:56.160 --> 00:08:00.399 But all of that's rooted in a misunderstanding of who God is and how he works. 00:08:00.800 --> 00:08:09.439 See, God doesn't get distracted, he doesn't get preoccupied, he doesn't have to choose between showing up for you and showing up for or showing up for me. 00:08:10.560 --> 00:08:13.360 He doesn't get tired, he doesn't get disinterested. 00:08:15.120 --> 00:08:16.160 Think about our verses. 00:08:16.319 --> 00:08:21.199 How often does it does uh 2 Corinthians say we are we are renewed? 00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:36.399 That 1 Corinthians 10 verse, what does he say? 00:08:36.559 --> 00:08:39.519 Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, right? 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:42.879 Eating and drinking is like the thing we maybe think about the the least, right? 00:08:42.960 --> 00:08:43.600 Besides breathing. 00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:48.240 It's like it's just something we do uh because uh we like to stay alive, right? 00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:57.120 Uh and yet uh and yet God cares about us even in those moments and cares about what we're thinking and what's going on with us in those moments. 00:08:58.480 --> 00:09:09.759 There's a moment in the Old Testament where the Israelites, they uh they've been exiled out of the promised land, and uh they're starting to come back and they're wanting to uh rebuild. 00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:15.759 They're wanting to rebuild their city, they're wanting to rebuild the uh the temple, uh, but it's going very slowly. 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:24.639 All right, it's there's all this opposition, there's all these other uh nations around them that are trying to slow them down or keep them from being able to uh to finish. 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:26.960 And so so they're obviously discouraged. 00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:30.080 You know, they're trying to, they're they're asking, you know, what's going on, God? 00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:34.480 We thought this was what you wanted, uh, but it doesn't seem to be going very well. 00:09:35.120 --> 00:09:39.519 And so they get to the point where they've actually sort of accomplished something, right? 00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:45.919 But it's such a small thing, they're still kind of discouraged and uh and they're still trying to figure out, is this even worth it? 00:09:46.159 --> 00:09:50.159 And and God shows up and he speaks to them, and this is and this is what he says. 00:09:50.320 --> 00:09:54.720 He says, Don't despise the day of small things. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:58.960 Don't despise the day of small things. 00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:08.000 He's saying it may be a small moment, but even small moments are evidence that God's present and that he's at work in your midst. 00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:29.679 There's uh there's another story in the Old Testament where uh Elijah the prophet, he's he's sort of been involved in all of these big events and these uh you know big kind of miraculous things that have happened, uh, but those things are over, and now he's sort of uh kind of running from his life, he's hiding, and he's just going through the motions, trying to figure out, all right, what's uh what's next? 00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:35.600 And uh and he's discouraged too, wondering, all right, God, where are you at now in in this moment? 00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:39.440 And God says, All right, I'm gonna um I'm gonna show up and I'm gonna and I'm gonna speak to you. 00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:42.240 And so he tells Elijah to go and stand outside. 00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:54.159 And uh and the the Bible tells us uh first uh there was uh there was this uh massive wind that came, and this wind blew, it was so powerful that it broke some of the rocks off that were around him. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:11:00.799 Uh and uh and so the wind uh came past Elijah, and it tells us God was not in the wind. 00:11:01.120 --> 00:11:11.759 And then it says there was an earthquake, and the ground shook, and the and and and the earth and the things around him rattled, uh, and and the Bible tells us God was not in the earthquake. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:20.799 And then it says there was this big fire, and there was this fire that burned, and uh and it tells us again, God was not in the fire. 00:11:21.440 --> 00:11:34.000 And then it says there was a small whisper, and a small whisper passed by Elijah, and Elijah couldn't help but fall on his knees because he saw God in the whisper. 00:11:34.320 --> 00:11:38.480 It was in the whisper, the quiet whisper of that moment, that God showed up. 00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:40.720 Now I'm gonna be honest. 00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:44.559 I don't understand everything that's going on in that passage, right? 00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:48.879 I don't understand everything that uh that God's trying to communicate there. 00:11:49.440 --> 00:11:57.440 But I do think it's interesting that God wants Elijah to know in that moment, he's he's not just in the big moments, right? 00:11:57.519 --> 00:12:02.559 He doesn't just show up when uh you know in in these amazing, miraculous things. 00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:07.759 He's there in the small, quiet whispers, in the everyday moments as well. 00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:11.840 Think about think about Jesus, right? 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:14.159 Jesus was God in the flesh. 00:12:14.720 --> 00:12:22.720 And the gospels tell us he he performed all of these miracles, he he spoke to huge crowds, he did all these amazing things. 00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:34.720 But the gospels also tell us that he ate fish with his friends on the beach, and uh and he went to Zacchaeus' house for dinner uh to uh to spend time with him. 00:12:35.360 --> 00:12:47.200 He played with kids, uh he spent time with an old woman who had been sick to make sure that she was okay and to talk to her, and to see her, and to notice her. 00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:50.879 This is what Jesus is is like. 00:12:51.039 --> 00:12:59.200 We're told about those things because uh because he was present and he was active in those small everyday moments of people's lives. 00:13:00.879 --> 00:13:05.600 And I think it's interesting, he doesn't spend time in those moments grudgingly either. 00:13:06.159 --> 00:13:10.639 You don't get the sense that he's there, but really he's thinking about the next big thing he's gonna do. 00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:11.440 No. 00:13:12.240 --> 00:13:14.720 We see Jesus' heart in those moments. 00:13:15.840 --> 00:13:18.960 He's not rushed, but he's fully present. 00:13:19.279 --> 00:13:26.960 He's not annoyed, but he's full of love and compassion and even joy for the person that's right there in front of him. 00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:34.480 He's the same way with us in every moment of our lives, uh, big and small. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:41.360 Uh there was uh there was a kid at um the the last church I worked at, is uh his name is Will. 00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:47.360 He we um uh we probably moved there when he was about five years old, uh, and we were there for 15 years. 00:13:47.440 --> 00:14:05.279 So I saw him kind of grow uh grow up from uh you know from a pretty small small kid, and um you know he was in uh kids' ministry with us, and he was in youth group with us, and uh, and you know, all through it he um uh he he would never say that he was uh that he was a Christian. 00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:08.960 Uh you know, and his parents his parents prayed for him all the time. 00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:11.600 They um uh you know they talked to him about Jesus. 00:14:11.759 --> 00:14:17.919 We uh you know, we would talk to him at church, all these things, and he just never seemed quite uh quite interested. 00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:28.399 And uh, you know, and and and it was just you know, day after day, year after year, uh hoping that he um uh that he would be uh that he'd be interested in uh in Jesus. 00:14:28.480 --> 00:14:30.960 And he and he never and uh he never was. 00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:45.919 Um you know, so we moved and we got here, and maybe and maybe a few months ago, I got a text from uh from the guy who's the pastor at uh at the church there now, and he said, Hey, I just wanted you to know, uh, but Will became a Christian this week. 00:14:46.080 --> 00:15:04.720 And I thought, you know, what what an amazing thing that that you know his parents' uh faithfulness, uh, you know, that the faithfulness of his church, ultimately, that God's faithfulness through such a long period of time uh to bring him uh to finally know uh know Jesus. 00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:08.639 Not a single one of those moments of his life was was wasted. 00:15:08.879 --> 00:15:20.960 Not a single conversation that his parents had for him, not a single mistake that his parents made when they got frustrated with him or uh um or um uh uh you know or discouraged by um uh by what was going on in his life. 00:15:21.039 --> 00:15:24.720 Uh not one conversation with someone at church, all of those things. 00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:34.639 God weaved all of those small moments together over 20 something years uh to work together to bring him uh to uh to faith. 00:15:35.679 --> 00:15:38.559 There are no wasted uh moments. 00:15:38.960 --> 00:15:50.639 Every moment of our lives is God-infused, even the ordinary ones, uh for his uh for his purposes uh and for his good works for uh for us. 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:54.559 So why do we doubt God's at work? 00:16:25.759 --> 00:16:31.919 Our 2 Corinthians verse doesn't just say that God cares about every moment, but that he's renewing us day by day. 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:32.240 Right? 00:16:32.320 --> 00:16:42.480 There's something active that he's doing in those moments to renew us and to restore our souls and to draw us towards him day by day uh by day. 00:16:42.639 --> 00:16:45.919 He's not passive when he shows up in our moments. 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:49.360 Uh he's active and he's at work in us. 00:16:51.519 --> 00:17:01.440 The process uh that he goes through to uh to change us and to renew us and to uh and to draw us to himself is called sanctification. 00:17:01.600 --> 00:17:02.960 It's kind of a kind of a big word. 00:17:03.039 --> 00:17:06.880 We've we have two main words that we talk about uh when we're thinking about uh faith. 00:17:07.039 --> 00:17:10.480 There's this there's justification and there's sanctification. 00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:19.440 All right, justification is uh is what happened when Jesus uh died in our place for our sins on the cross. 00:17:19.680 --> 00:17:33.200 It's what he did uh in that moment to uh to make uh rebellious sinners like us uh family and uh and to make it possible for us to be in relationship with him. 00:17:33.680 --> 00:17:43.039 And so he died on the cross in our place, and we put our trust in him, and when we trust Jesus with our lives, we are justified. 00:17:43.200 --> 00:17:47.440 It's sort of this momentary thing that happens, and and in that moment we belong to him. 00:17:47.759 --> 00:17:49.359 There's nothing that can change that. 00:17:49.519 --> 00:17:55.359 There's nothing that can uh snatch us from uh from his hand, uh, the um uh Jesus tells us. 00:17:55.440 --> 00:18:01.440 And so uh and so justification is this moment where we belong to him. 00:18:02.079 --> 00:18:04.480 Sanctification is every moment after that. 00:18:04.720 --> 00:18:13.279 It's uh it's the it's the process from uh from the the moment we trust him uh to the last day of our lives. 00:18:13.519 --> 00:18:14.400 And so how does God work?
