Hey everybody and welcome to Comic Books Beyond. I'm your host, Vic, and on this show we like to talk about comic books. Uh so first of all, a little bit of news. Already mentioned it once this month, but uh fellow podcast Escape the Mojo Verst is trying to raise money for uh Trans Law Center as part of Pride Month. Uh if they raise a thousand dollars, they will do an extra bonus episode on Wick and the Divine, which is personally one of my favorite comic books. So not only is this a great cause, you're also gonna get a really awesome episode with an awesome story from great creators, Gilly McKelvey or um Jamie McKelvey and Kieran Gillian. I mixed up their names there. All right, so uh other news for the show. Next week, let's just do this now. Um we are having Daddy Beef come back on the uh show. We already recorded that episode, but I wanted to uh put that one out later just so I had some time to edit and promote it. Uh it's on uh John Constantine Hellblazer, issues 41 through 46, written by Garth Ennis. Uh it's Dangerous Habits, the first of Garth Ennis's run. He picked this book. Uh, I'm gonna give you two warnings here. Uh, one, hilarious, absolutely loved the episode, had a great time, haven't laughed that hard in a while. We do a little bit of dark humor on that one, so just uh be cautious that there are some heavier themes, and we are going full spoilers. So now's your one-week warning. Uh, that's what we'll be chatting about next month. Uh full disclosure, you know, we wanted to try to cover more pride-related stories this month. We just missed the mark on there. Uh, we knew that uh John Constantine was uh bi or maybe pansexual in some interpretations. Uh we just didn't know if that was gonna come up or not. And we've been both really wanting to do that episode. Uh so we did drop the ball there, but we're just gonna take the L and move on. All right. So this week, what are we talking about? Just uh kind of a couple things. This is gonna be mostly just a cool hangout and just chatting about what I've been reading. So uh I want to keep doing the deeper discussions on the books, but I want to try to keep those for whenever we have guests. Uh, it's just more fun to talk about books deeper with other people. So I apologize if like these episodes start to sound like kind of like a Talking Comics Lightning Round or uh an episode of Shadow Flame with Magic by Mr. John Klein III, uh, which is which are two podcasts you should both be checking out if you're a fan of this show. Uh Talking Comics is a huge inspiration on the show and me and John Klein is one of the coolest people I've met since starting doing this. Uh genuinely great dude. All those people aforementioned, great dudes. Oh, also, if if it wasn't obvious, uh I I don't personally know Escape the Mojo verse, but uh by all accounts, they seem pretty chill from what I've seen, and I really like their podcast, so I'd definitely give them a listen. Uh I also have been listening to The Comics Collective, which I believe is a pretty popular uh comic book podcast, and they've been really great. I was I recently listened to their episode on Absolute Batman. So uh some most things I actually pretty much agreed with. We're I'm not gonna say we're one-to-one because nobody is. Um, so I'm trying a little bit of a new setup, trying to remove some of the damn like camera or the little clicky noise that shows up every once in a while. Uh, and I just got myself a little microphone boom stand, which it's I guess it sounds okay. I don't know. Uh so what um what am I been reading this week? So I want to go through the um books that I read this week and from my weekly polls, and I also want to talk about just some of the stuff that I've been reading, you know, outside of my weekly list. Uh so first up we have um Batman 10 by Matt Fraction. Uh so this might have been my least favorite issue of the uh run. It's not bad by any means at all. It's just I enjoyed this one probably the least from everything. Uh, I'm absolutely loving the series. I think this is the best Batman since Snyder, and it has a truly good chance of being better than Snyder's. We're only 10 issues in. Uh, this one just didn't really stick with me at all, unfortunately. I read it a few days ago, and um I just it felt like it was a wheels-turning issue, and nothing's really happening. Like they're trying to make some moves against Vandal Savage right now, and um who's the current commissioner. It looks like they're setting up for an event called Bad Seeds, which I am just not feeling events because I don't like events that much. It's got Poison I it's it's Poison Ivy related, which is written by G. Willow Wilson right now, which I did start reading on the DC app, and I'm really, really enjoying it. Uh, I just haven't caught up to their, so maybe I'll spend the next month or so trying to catch up with that, just so I can read them like concurrently. I might just fall a month behind on them if uh they're not in the app. It's just a matter of like, well, money. Um did mention that uh we're having some pretty big home renovations that we didn't know we were having. We'll be fine, just gotta make sure I wise with my money is all maybe a little less DoorDash and a little less uh impulse buys, but you know, uh all things, all things are gonna be good. Um, but yeah, the the current issue of Batman, it was totally fine. Like there was nothing wrong with it. It was just like felt like it was pure connective tissue. Um, there was a pretty good moment with Catwoman that I liked. Uh, and I think everybody liked that one, but the rest of the issue just didn't seem to click too much with me. And I think we're getting a little bit of payoff for some stuff that was uh set up in the early, early issues. Um, this was probably just my least favorite of them. Um hard to really describe otherwise. Uh, I also picked up Amazing Spider-Man by Joe Kelly this week, which I think formally starts the spore. Uh whatever they're doing up until that's probably going to end right before issue 1000. Um I'm probably being harsh on this because just like this version of Spider-Man just seems like it's so repetitive right now where everything is just, you know, going it's the same thing over and over again, and just with different suits on, it just kind of feels like it's wheels turning. Um, you know, like when you're and by wheels turning, I mean your car's stuck in the mud, you're you're butching the accelerator, and the story's not going forward, the character interactions aren't really that great. I will say the character interactions in the art in this was pretty good. Uh I uh Pepe La Raz is, I think, the primary artist on here, and believe it or not, I'm just not as high on him as everybody else is. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's just it doesn't make me go, oh wow, this is amazing. It's just it's just there. And I mean absolutely no disrespect. I'm a terrible artist. And for as bad as an artist I am, I am a worse judge of art, as long as you're not drawing like some kind of quasi-porn or you know, bent arched back with stupid muscles and too many pockets. I'm probably gonna like your art. Uh yeah, this is another one. It's just like spinning the wheels, nothing's really happening in it, but we are kind of finally getting some pay payoff for some early stuff that was set up. Early in the run, we met, you know, a long-less childhood friend at that trope, and we're kind of getting uh some payoff with that character now, where uh it seems like stuff they were doing was relevant, is relevant to the plot, and trying not to spoil anything. Uh I really didn't care much for the um torment stuff. It was fine. Again, it's like if you want a symbiote story, that's basically it. And I've read so many symbiote stories where I never thought I would say this being a 90s kid. I'm burned out on symbiote stories. That's pretty much all I can say. Uh so now I picked up four other books this week. These I actually just picked up last night, and these were a bit of a slow burn through. So I picked up Batgirl 20. Uh, Batgirl isn't actually on my pull list. It should be. I just don't want to commit to it right now. Basically, I do this thing where I have my forever books on my poll list. So we're talking Amazing Spider-Man, which I'm part of the problem. If it's garbage, I'll read it just to say I read it. Daredevil, which is amazing by Stephanie Phillips. Absolutely amazing. Batman, which again, overall, amazing series. Just didn't super love this last issue. You get not everything can be five out of five. Detective Comics, which again, that series is really, really good right now. We're not really talking about it today. I will just mention that I am really enjoying what Tom Taylor is doing on that. The art across the board has been good. This is a pretty cool story arc. It's nothing revolutionary, but it's just well-written, well-told comic books. Uh also, Nightwing is on my Forever Pull list, uh, just because, you know, I I love Nightwing and this version of Nightwing that Dan Waters is writing. I cannot wait till it's all done and collected and I can just talk about a whole thing, go full salt of the earth nuclear spoilers, because this might be my favorite Nightwing that has ever been written. Batgirl is really, really high on my list of characters, but I am a Barbara Gordon Batgirl and Oracle fan. I love Oracle, I love Batgirl. I'm probably one of the people who is okay whatever position they're gonna put her in. If they want her to be Batgirl for a while, I'm gonna enjoy that ride. If they want her to be Oracle again, I'm sure as hell gonna enjoy that ride. Um, I hate killing joke because of the misogyny around it, but I love Batgirl. And uh this version of Batgirl that we're reading is by Tate Bromball with um uh Cassandra Kane. Now, I really like Cassandra Kane. She might very well be my second favorite Batgirl. Um she is, it's it's no no question. And it's very possible this could actually tip the scales of I want her as Batgirl permanently, then I want um Barbara to just be in the Oracle role. That is totally possible. Uh, I really am enjoying this Batgirl run. This is uh dealing a lot with her family history. There's a lot of thematic stuff about uh blood and history and family. Like the last arc was about blood magic. Uh, this new arc is kind of about her um having this psychic-ish connection with her fathers and the meaning of fathership, um, or fatherhood, I guess I should say. Uh wow, that was a terrible. Why did I say fathership? Uh I must have that stupid Mario game on the rain. Um, but this talks about her uh her blood father, what he taught her versus what her adoptive father, Bruce, taught her, and her adopted father taught her to solve murders, where her blood father had taught her to commit the murders. And that's that that's a straight up line from there. Um it it it's it's a really, really good. Um the art and art is is amazing. I forget who wrote it, um, but absolutely loving it. All right. So next up we have two more by um W. Maxwell Prince, the Ice Cream Man team. Now, I don't know exactly how these are coming out. Um, my store didn't have Ice Cream Man 45 when it was out. I went to another store that is just further away, and I happened to see they had this. So I was like, well, I'm just going to buy that for four bucks. And this is uh kind of an ode to Secret Window. Now, this is all about voyeurism and kind of the state of uh who you are in your dreams and stuff. Um, this was just your typical existential ice cream man nightmare. Uh, what I really liked about this one was the panel layout and construction. It really just created a creepy ass vibe. Uh, we're still 45 minutes or issues into uh Ice Cream Man, 46 if you're counting Mortal Coil Shuffle, and I do because it's awesome. This might have been my favorite thing I read all week, and I'm still unpacking and processing it. Uh it's your typical, you know, if you're familiar with the Alfred Hitchcock story, and I'm honestly blanking on the name. Uh oh god, the it's it's parodied and everything. Guy with a wind broke broken leg staring at people out the window. Uh it basically it's about your own paranoia and stuff like that. It's it it's a hard, hard thing to uh fully process and just be okay with. Uh because it's a thing that kind of makes you realize, and there's some fourth wall breaking stuff in here. It's a thing that maybe makes you realize you don't always have control of your actions. And even when you think you have control of your actions, maybe they're not in the best place. It's it's as simple as that, and it's really good. I cannot wait till this is collected. Uh, I also recently read a bit of news. Uh, Ice Cream Man issue or Sunday edition volume three is slated for next year. Um, I'm doing my part and just trying to support them to make sure they get it. Uh the Maxwell Prince was very open. These are expensive and hard to get done. So I'm gonna have it pre-ordered. I'm not trying to guilt anybody into doing that. You're under no obligation to support anyone. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But I personally do want that. I love those image hardcovers. That is like my one vice in life, right? It's like that in coffee. And if I ever decide to drink beer again, it'll be beer. Um, with uh now, let's piggyback off of what uh just came out from Ice Cream Man, uh, because the real hotness came out this week, and I was surprised at this one for a lot of reasons. We also got The Dead Man by the Ice Cream Man team. This is the exact same team, including um Martin Madarazo, Chris O'Halloran, W. Maxwell Prince on writing, and good old Neon on letters. I love when this team is all working together. These guys are so in sync, it reminds me of uh Snyder Capullo and John Glappian. Uh, those three guys, I think, were the all-star dream team. Like, no disrespect to Danny Mickey back in the day when he was inking Batman. I just think Glappian was a little bit better and I liked his uh inking more. It's one of the few times that I can really say it in an inch or really stood out to me. But it's this whole team, you know, writing pencils, writing, colors, letters. Good old Neon. I I will honestly see whatever he's reading just because I've seen some of the cool stuff he's done with lettering. And the lettering in this was really, really good. Uh, I I enjoyed this issue a lot for about the first 75% of it. Now, the first 75% of this was kind of setting up who Dead Man is. I uh uh but anyway, uh so this one was basically about Deadman working as a custodian janitor in the hospital. Now he is just a ghost, no one can see him, except for the people who are about to die, and he's ushering spirits into the afterlife. Uh, and one of them was a total piece of shit. There were some other not pieces of shit. You get some glimpses into his life where he still feels connection to his ex. Then at the end, there was a conflict set up which it felt like it almost came out of nowhere for me. Like you had this, you had about four you you had like 60 to 70 percent of this book being just about like kind of like a slice of life story, and then it turns into actual conflict towards the end, which it's just not what I wanted after the first 60 to 70 percent of the book. I'm gonna keep it going, but I I don't know. It's I trust the ice cream man team where they were dealing with the philosophical notions of life and death and all that other good stuff. Uh, but this one, uh, I don't know. We'll see where this goes. Again, great art. It's the ice cream man team art. The only thing I'm gonna caution you here, if you don't like that art style, or if you are distracted by that art style, uh, I use the phrase hide the treadmill sometimes, which is you hear that more often in gaming, but it applies to writing as well in any kind of media production. When you see the base level of what people are doing and you're not, they're not hiding it with the window dressing very well, sometimes it's just noticeable. And that's not a bad thing. Everyone has their style. I can see where some people may say this is distracting. Uh, so final book is I'm gonna get the uh exact name up here just because I don't actually know the um uh creative team right off the top of my head. Now, there are several of these um of the DC Pride Pride stories. So I picked up uh Justice League Dream Girls, which is written by uh this is by Nicole Means and Jadzia Axelrod. Uh and there's several other creators on here. Uh Greg Ruck actually has a small story in here as well. Now, uh I wanted to pick this up just automatically to support what DC is doing with their pride moments. DC is not without criticism, especially right now. Look into the DC blackout stuff if you'd um like some interesting reading. It's been far too long since we've had a Black Led DC book, especially in mainline. Uh now this follows the characters Dreamer and Galaxy kind of through a series of dreams that take them from Thomascara to Gotham to the Justice League Watchtower. Now, I like that this book exists. I liked things about this book. This book wasn't exactly for me. Now, I don't have any real criticisms of the book, and that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying this is a good book that uh I was not very well able to enjoy much of, simply for the fact that I didn't know these characters, and I thought with the structure of this book, this is kind of a payoff reward for someone who had been reading these characters. I just hadn't. So if you are a fan of Dreamer and Galaxy and have been following those stories, I think you were going to love this story. The art was really cool. Uh, it was it I liked the Thomascara art was my absolute favorite. Then I don't I don't know if they switched artists every uh like little yarn in there, but the uh the Gotham art was really cute and cool. Um there was nothing wrong with the storytelling. This was just felt like it was you kind of needed to know these characters a little bit more. So, like new reader-friendly, this was like three or four. I I hate using numbers. I just don't think it's the most new reader-friendly thing I could have read. And I I kind of wish they just did a little bit of a better job introducing those characters. Like they actually give you, they actually give you um character introductions at the end of the book. And I wonder now, if I were to reread this book, would I get more out of it for the simple fact of I read those character introductions because I didn't know power set, I didn't know where they came from, other stories. I didn't even know if this was their first appearance. Uh apparently they're uh they've both been around for a little while, and at least Dreamer, I believe, came from uh the Arrowverse, from what it looks like. Now, there was another character named Dreamer, which I believe she's based on. Um that might have uh they were from the New Gods, and I've definitely read some of those stories. I'd I it's not the same character though, it's just inspired by that character, or like I don't even think it's a legacy character from what I was reading. I had to do some reading after the fact. Uh, but it was a pretty cool story. If you don't mind stories that were everything is a dream and this is very clearly a dream, like you're gonna know about a page and you're in some kind of a dream adventure world. Um there were things where uh I I thought were just super fun in here. Like we had it this felt like they were kind of like cosplaying uh different major scenes throughout Themiscare and Gotham. And then we just kind of figured out like everything all tied together pretty neatly at the end of Justice League Watchtower. So I was able to like piece this together. Uh it was just like I had a lot of confusion going throughout. And at the end, it's like, oh, okay, I I get it. Um, I just kind of wish I knew these characters more ahead of time, or maybe I just got like just a quick, quick hit, like even if it was just this character's name, this character's name, uh, simple power set were good. Uh, because I didn't even know Galaxy's name until I want to say it was like four or five pages in. So not uh there, there's you know, that that's just a stylistic choice. Uh it's just one that I wish I was more I wish I was more familiar with these characters, but on the same token, I have to wonder, like, you know, I read comics every week. I haven't been stepping outside of like uh Gotham in DC lately. I used to read everything, DC and as much Marvel. I just don't have the time. You know, having a comic book podcast, you'd think I would, but um I just I've been like reading a lot more stuff on the back end that instead of the current stuff, but as names pop up that I like, I'm definitely gonna jump on it. But I will say this story did one thing really, really well. I'm really invested in these characters now. Um, so I might have been confused. So the more I think about it, the more maybe I think this was actually doing its job as trying to show me some interesting characters where I can follow their story forward. I think it might be going on in the current Justice League story. I don't know a hundred percent, but it does look like this is you know the kickoff to uh to an event. And there's several other Pride titles that are coming out this month, as they should. I mean, they should year round, in my opinion. Um, the uh other story was from Greg Rucko dealing with Batwoman. Uh, Batwoman is another one of my favorite characters. You guys know I love the Gotham's. Stuff. Uh Batwoman, I didn't click with his series at first. There's a couple issues out now, so I'm gonna have to go back and read it on the app. I wasn't able to get a copy of issue two, unfortunately, which really bummed me out because I think there's a lot of potential there. It's Greg Ruckett, too. He is truly one of the greats. But there was another story that kind of led right into Batwoman. So I'm wondering if there's like a reprinting of Batwoman 1 coming out, or you know, they just expect you to read it on the app. I'm I'm not sure. Or like maybe they're doing like a special for Pride Day or something, or for Pride Month. Uh I don't know what other Pride specials are coming out from DC. Uh, I haven't been following the solicits as closely as I could. I just, you know, we're not a new show. I uh I read what I want to read. And if we get fan requests or audience requests, if we get if we get listener requests, uh, I would um definitely check some more stuff out, especially if it's on the apps. But yeah, what did you guys think of this this pride issue? Did anyone pick this one up? Like I I know I sound like a fool where I just saying I don't know these characters that well, but I can't help the things that I do and don't know. Uh if you want me to sit here and lecture you on, you know, Batman or 90s X-Men, I absolutely could, or any of the weird books or any of the uh indie books that I love. But I don't think it's going to be I think if you're if you're comfortable, you know, being confused for about 20 pages, but knowing what's going on, it's kind of like a Shakespeare play in that way. Uh you may not like actually understand the words that are being spoken or the context around what's happening, but you just get the general idea. And if you want some cool art, cool. Uh well I think that's all my that is all my books for the week. Uh so I'm also currently reading a couple other things. I recently finished my um I've got a I my my work bonus check. I not all of it, obviously, uh, but I I've spent on a couple hardcovers. Um uh I got I read through the Reckless books by Brew Baker and Phillips. Uh I enjoyed all of them. They're all about the same quality. There's one that follows the sidekick character, which I think was the best. What else did I finish? I finished up Lazarus by Greg Rucca. Now I liked Lazarus, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Uh there was nothing wrong with it. It was just there's a lot of it, and some of it is it's just a lot of world building to get through, and huge world building is something that is a turnoff to me. I get that from Marvel DC. I'm good. Uh I am also caught up, or I'm also uh reading Mark Wade's Daredevil. Uh so I'm I I I like it, and especially compared to Shadowland, it's worlds better. Uh I don't dis I think it's even appropriate for the character. It's lighthearted, and I'm just so used to like grittier Daredevil, where it just feels, I don't know, this doesn't feel quite right to me. I'm only about 10, 11 issues in, so I'll probably burn through that, and then I'm gonna jump into um Poison Ivy, I think, next is gonna be my big read for uh to get ready for Bad Seeds, since I am really invested in that story. And Daredevil uh by Mark Wade isn't bad at all right now. I just got through the issue where the they were on a field trip and the uh oh no, oh I'm past that. I I'm uh they were on on a field trip and Matt had to escort some what I assume are blind kids through the snow, uh, because he was dressed as Daredevil and no one said anything. So I didn't think they specified that. That's my assumption. And I I got through uh some stuff where there was a crossover with Spider-Man and Black Cat, and uh, that was a fun little um story where you I I like this interpretation of Black Cat. It was just a lot of fun, it was adorable. Um, like that there was uh she had the chance to be a criminal, but she showed honor amongst um questionable superheroes, I guess. Um, but I but I enjoy I enjoyed their little crossover. Uh and finally, what I'm reading right now in tangent with um Mark Wade's Daredevil is I picked up From Hell from my local comic book store. And that's an accurate description of this book. Holy heck, this is some of the most dense writing I have ever read. Uh, I recently read a novel called Small Town Harl by Ronald Malfi. Uh or Randolph Melfi, is it Ronald? Gotta make sure I say the right name. Yeah, by Ronald Malfey. And uh that one page of that novel read quicker than one page of this comic book. There are, it's not just there's there's a lot of words. It's that the words are very arduous, thick, multisyllabic, and written in an old-timey dialect from the 19 or from the 1800s in England. So I really have to think on every single page. I'll report back more when I get further into this, but it took me like close to an hour to read chapter one. It was a lot. Well, I think that's gonna wrap it up for this week's episode. Remember, meet us back here next week for Hellblazer. Uh Beef will be on that episode. Uh, he's really excited to be back. I think he's gonna try to be on a little more often. Uh, I think Coti is gonna be on an episode again this month, and uh, we have to play next month a little uh bit by ear. That's Garnet's wedding. So we are all gonna be a little bit busy with that, unfortunately. Well, I mean, fortunately for her. Um, and Mike, I'm not sure when he's coming back on. He has got a lot going on right now. Uh, nothing bad. He's actually got a lot of good stuff going on right now. Uh, I know he wants to come back for a couple things, and we're saving stuff for him. So I just said, hey, you let me know when you come back. You when we'll we'll come back and we'll have fun. We had an episode planned this month, but I don't think it's gonna happen. Um, but yeah, next week is gonna be Hellblazer by John by Garth Ennis, 41 through 46. You can read it in the DC app. It's in Dangerous Habits Trade paperback. Uh, a little bit of caution going in. It's gonna be, we're gonna have some dark sense of humor. We have some great jokes and stories. I did have a couple audio issues in that one, but it's nothing too, too bad. I had to cut out a couple parts, so you just might hear a hard edit, one or two things there. And finally, remember it is um uh escape the mojo verse is raising uh money for translaw. Uh, I will have a link in the show notes. Please consider donating if you have the means. Uh you're under no obligation. Again, never feel obligated to do something, especially if it's, you know, something outside your your budget or whatever. But it's a good cause, and they're also going to be, you know, making another episode uh with uh w when they get to a thousand dollars, and I'm really hoping they get to a thousand. Um that being said, you know, it's Pride Month. Go out. Uh try to hit some Pride events if you can. If you can do something nice for somebody, go do it. Um, if you can do something nice for yourself just to relax, go do that too. But be good to each other, guys, and reach out to a friend or family member if you need help. Be safe. Well guys, thank you so much for listening.
