Below the Surface Podcast
The Blueprint of Midwest Culture, Undiluted and Underground.
Before the algorithms and the streaming platforms, there was public access. Below the Surface Podcast is the direct evolution of The 411: Your Underground Connection, which originally hit the airwaves on Public Access Channel 16 in East Chicago, Indiana. Born from the raw, community-driven era of cable access television, the platform has spent decades documenting the architects of Midwest street and electronic music culture.
Now operating as a fully independent media network and LLC, Below the Surface continues its original mission: digging beneath the mainstream noise to preserve the true history of regional hip-hop, house music, and DJ culture. Through deep-dive artist interviews, vinyl archaeology, and unfiltered commentary, the podcast serves as a living archive for the innovators, the record collectors, and the independent collectives who built the Midwest sound from the ground up.
From Channel 16 to the digital landscape, we don't just cover the culture—we are a part of its lineage.

Streaming. Um, if you're looking for us, don't go to Spotify until maybe this episode. Uh, and it'll still be under Below the Surface. SPEAKER_04Yeah, so um, we're gonna go back to pirate radio.
SPEAKER_05Yar, yeah, yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_04Um, we'll be promoting the mixes, promoting all the local talent when we're promoting on uh our podcasts, you know, and uh other artists that we start um you know coming on to the shows and uh help you know uh create a platform for them to express, you know, have a music heard. In addition to that, we're looking to expand to have an app uh besides the the radio station that we'll be uh utilizing as well. So now you can go out to the app and listen to us 24-7. So that's all in the works, you know. And uh all in all, I'm hoping that we get a uh website uh sooner than later. You know, we can incorporate all of these um uh what do we call it?
SPEAKER_03Content merch, some sponsors, yes, music, links to other people's music, links to the mixes. Become the ultimate hub.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_03I'll be back. Uh, I'll be back editing video soon, so you'll see all the live content of the shows we've done. I'm gonna be back on the uh music to die by uh mixes. Stay tuned for that. I got some shit cooking. Um, I'll be back in the booth soon with Mr. Josh Tree. We're gonna start working on our project. We got some hot shit for y'all. Um, yeah, man. Raw offices forever. Shoutouts to my homie Smorgusborg, man. Smorgusborg. Everybody's eating. Yum, yum, yum. Um, I don't know, man. I've been buying a lot of wax lately, dude. SPEAKER_02I've been I've been seeing a lot of the stuff you've been posting, man. You're getting all kinds of rarities.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, dude. I got uh a nice little stack from him last week. I'll bust them out in a few uh a lot of old school RB, dude. Shit that's hard to find that I never see in the wild. I got another order coming in from him. Um super cool cat. Uh his shit goes fast though. So if you don't hurry up and try to purchase, they're gone.
SPEAKER_02So, like, this is this has become your new hobby. Uh, because you're working so much, huh?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm just buying shit online.
SPEAKER_02Like, I don't got time, I can't spend my money during the day. I'm working all day.
SPEAKER_03So let me see what he's got.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm on or e-commerce, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for sure. Yeah, um, yeah, man. What's going on with you, Josh Rhea was Paint Lewis?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Paint Lewis was great, man. You know, um, you know, the the raw offices was representing, you know, for for the Chicagoland and Gary area, and uh, you know, KL Razin and Thessalonius did the blue-collar rock stars on Friday, Friday night. Uh, then in uh set Saturday afternoon, uh, you know, I came through with Scrubs and we did we did our set and uh rocked the spot. And then uh the Waffle King came and threw down a beat set and had everybody grooving and and feeling it. And it was uh it we we uh you know feel like we re-repped properly and uh can't wait until next year. You know, everybody in St. Louis was super hospitable. Shout out to GA Bars. Her set was killer, man. I will I couldn't stop moving my feet, and uh and and uh and Bates was there. She she was the headliner on Saturday, yeah. Killing it, killing it. We should reach out to them and have them come and talk about yeah, and and uh we gotta have them back on maybe for like a live set too, because they uh they know what to do on stage.
SPEAKER_05That's what's on there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was it was just a great time, you know. Uh we agreed, uh you know, talking with the guys yesterday, we agreed that we're gonna have to definitely stay the whole weekend next year because uh just going out there for the day was was not enough. It was uh it's uh you know, a four, I think a four-day event.
SPEAKER_05Oh shit.
SPEAKER_02It needs to be, you know, uh absorbed, I feel like a little bit longer than what we did on that quick Saturday. But oh man, it was just uh a rush of of fun and excitement, and they have food vendors, you know, all the painting going on. You could walk two miles down the the Mississippi River wall and just check out some amazing graffiti. Um the artists were killing it as usual from all over the world, they come through. So um it was uh a great event. This year was the 28th year. Uh I do remember, I do remember going, you know, like I was I was 17, I think, and that's you know it damn near could have been the first year.
SPEAKER_04So do you know the history of how it create how it became you know a reality?
SPEAKER_02Like, you know, like what was the I don't, I don't. Um I I don't know. Um, I maybe would have known when I was 17, but I don't know who put it into effect, but it's been you know 28 years strong. Um and it's the focus is on the graph, you know, we're all there to support the graph, the graphers, and um and and artists and and muralists, and you know, it's uh it's it's a great it's a it's a great way to celebrate that element of hip hop, you know, because yeah, very few times do you get a focus on on the graphers and the artists, you know. Um this this event is is them being focused on. They're the they're the stars of the show uh for this multi-element production, you know, or festival. It's uh it's it's family friendly and and just the fucking excuse me. It's just uh fucking awesome time.
SPEAKER_03Hell yeah, hell yeah. This shit, dude. Um don't forget, guys, the raw offices also still has the posse cuts for purchase.
SPEAKER_04One left, one left, hurry up and buy it.
SPEAKER_03One left, hurry up and buy it.
SPEAKER_02Uh super dope. It's a doozy, it's a doozy.
SPEAKER_04It's a doozy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's almost unreal. Unreal the music that we put out that day just having fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Magic was in the air. It was.
SPEAKER_03And there's already a date planned for the second one. So Posse Cuts Volume 2.
SPEAKER_02And we we uh were rocking it out in one of the colder months, you know, uh, because we we bring that coldness from the Midwest here.
SPEAKER_03I'll be freed up a lot more too, so I'm gonna be dropping shit like crazy. So I'll be back in the booth tearing it up.
SPEAKER_02Hopefully, we're gonna be in the booth this Friday. Yep. Because we got some writings that we've uh been sitting on for a little bit. Yep, gotta put them out. Working guy.
SPEAKER_03I know, man. Been working so much, dude. Working, working, working, working, working. Blue-collared hustling.
SPEAKER_02Yep, stacking the dough though. You're uh growing your record collection.
SPEAKER_03It's growing big, dude. Show you. I could show you a few things I got, man.
SPEAKER_04Oh, show and tell, show and tell.
SPEAKER_03Hold on, let me go grab it. Let me go grab it.
SPEAKER_04I want to show off my radio station.
SPEAKER_02You got a name yet, Rick?
SPEAKER_04I thought about a couple things.
SPEAKER_02We'll have to talk about it.
SPEAKER_04What is this? Uh oh.
SPEAKER_02You're gonna keep it pirate themed?
SPEAKER_04Oh fuck yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02There she is. Show and tell.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but I'm gonna get a bigger one antenna, it's gonna be 26 feet.
SPEAKER_02Captain, Captain Rick Rock over here.
SPEAKER_04This one, man. We could probably go mobile with this antenna.
SPEAKER_02Oh damn.
SPEAKER_04You know, do a live broadcast from wherever.
SPEAKER_02Cruising with a megaphone.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we get a power inverter to the cigarette lighter and shit. Hook it over.
SPEAKER_03So I'd have to get like off the background real quick to show you what I got, but this is just one order I got from my daddy's records, dude. Uh got this single right here. Kid and play. Oh, yes, ain't gonna hurt nobody. I got he always throws in extras too, which is pretty cool. So he threw in this rolling with kid and play.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03Oh this is my shit right here. Too short off the juice soundtrack. So you want to be an extra?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's a heater.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's a classic right there.
SPEAKER_02Oh, what else did I get? You gotta bring a stack over and do some mixing, Johnny.
SPEAKER_03I know, right? I don't know what this is.
SPEAKER_02Well, when we do when we do a uh cookout over at my place, most deaf. We gotta we gotta throw some records down. Uh can't you got turn tables at your crib, bro?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, hell yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh hell yeah. I go over the crate.
SPEAKER_03That's where we should do the pot at.
SPEAKER_04All right, we can do that.
SPEAKER_02I gotta finish fixing up the basement. We can do the instruction down here, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03Right here, uh most deaf. We're all like off the brown sugar soundtrack.
SPEAKER_04Oh no shit.
SPEAKER_03And this is the one I really wanted, haunted house rap.
SPEAKER_04Oh no shit.
SPEAKER_02Blase blase danger, haunted house rap just in time for Thanksgiving, excuse me, Halloween.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah, man. Um also got a bunch of other shit from him somewhere around here. But that's what I copped off of uh my daddy's records, so check him out. I don't know if these at.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think we wanted to start putting all the house music together like that.
SPEAKER_03Um, I got another order coming from him and shit too.
SPEAKER_04So I'm gonna reorganize my records and I gotta clean up the ones that got wet. I got a crate, I gotta clean up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I had to repurchase records, my condolences. But yeah, I've been copying shit off of Amazon, get on down. I have the new uh Supreme Clientele 2 coming in the mail. Um I think I ordered some Ozzy. I have that already. Blizzard of Oz.
SPEAKER_04I stopped at um didn't come out with an album. I don't think so. I think Raquan did.
SPEAKER_03I um stopped at Region Records and picked up a couple records there too.
SPEAKER_02Um showing love to Region Records. That was Josh and Jacob.
SPEAKER_03I didn't see Jacob, he was running the uh split up now. Which I was kind of like, I was like, where's the new stuff? He goes, It's at the whiting store.
SPEAKER_02I'm like, I'm at the wrong store.
SPEAKER_03I did get a uh chance to cop uh Bobby Codwell, original pressing, uh what you won't do for love album. I've seen that, got a good deal on it too. So I was very excited about that. Yeah, anybody you want to check out Region Records, it's in Highland on Highway Avenue, right next to Les Cafe, right by the street.
SPEAKER_02And also in Whiting on 119th Street, yep, in whiting as well.
SPEAKER_03Um, you got Rust Belt CDs available for purchase. I want to say the raw offices stuff is available available for purchase there too. Um, he's got a lot of stuff, though.
SPEAKER_02I got there might be a few Famski CDs left over there, possibly.
SPEAKER_03Um, so yeah, man, check out Region Records, man.
SPEAKER_05Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03I forgot what else. I bought some other stuff there too.
SPEAKER_02Tell them below the surface sent you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_04They'll hook you up with a free sticker, maybe some free records. Slap upside your head, get out of here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for sure. Oh yeah, but yeah, man, that's what I've been doing on my spare time ordering records and shit like that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I gotta get somebody to get up to the roof again to get an antenna going. Um there's one I got uh looked at it's like 26 feet.
SPEAKER_03Oh shit.
SPEAKER_04Oh, like the way we had it on the the chimney. Oh, the harness up again like that, but this time not sitting on the roof, so it doesn't cause damage.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04Hopefully that'll have that'll have a better impact.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what about putting it on your car?
SPEAKER_04The other one, yeah. I could mount it on my car and do like for the movie pump up the volume. Remember that?
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Later, it was driving around with the radio on his shit.
SPEAKER_02Or you remember the blues brothers? There you go.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02We'll need to get we need to get the the bullhorn, that's the bullhorn and the antenna, so we could yeah, we could broadcast and amplify at the same time, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yep. My thing is the higher the better. If we're too low on the ground, we're only gonna get what's you know on that level, or it won't be much. Well, the higher signal spreads more.
SPEAKER_02We'll build a uh like a stage on top of the car. Oh shit.
SPEAKER_04To make the uh I mean, we won't be able to go under bridges or anything, but or do like you know, uh we'll make some laps how they got the big ass van, and then they pop up in the top and they crank up that fucking mobile satellite. Okay, set up like that. We'll get one of those a used one and shit.
SPEAKER_02I was I was thinking, you know, more like rough carpentry, but yeah, let's let's do that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we'll have a stolen uh ABC van and shit where pirate radio shit.
SPEAKER_02We're gonna we're really gonna be pirates.
SPEAKER_03So here's the big question. Uh, what what is what's the new radio station gonna be called?
SPEAKER_02You don't know yet, it's a surprise.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we'll we'll keep it as a surprise. I'm still thinking about it. Okay, because there's a lot like um, all right, so I gotta find a music source, like something to play off of with a laptop, you know what kind of program I'm gonna use, you know, whose music am I gonna play? How am I gonna play it? Do virtual DJ and have it like auto mix itself or some shit. There you go. That might be sorry as fuck because hip hop has different intros and shit like that, so that might work.
SPEAKER_03We'll get that all worked out though.
SPEAKER_04We'll figure it out. We're in an in in was it the infamy? Infamous infant infancy.
SPEAKER_02Infancy, yeah.
SPEAKER_04There we go.
SPEAKER_02We're in infamy too, I I suppose. Right, the infamous below the surface podcast.
SPEAKER_03That's right, man. We ain't gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_02At least the Spotify we are, right?
SPEAKER_03Right, yeah, dude. We're doing something right, man.
SPEAKER_02We're like some Howard Stearns over here, right? Right, right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, man. Um there's a lot of stuff in the works right now.
SPEAKER_04You didn't pay the bill, bro. Right, you just forgot to swear.
SPEAKER_03Overlap, you said fucking if that was the case, I would have paid it right then and there and got my shit back, but I don't know what happened. No, bro.
SPEAKER_04You stole 15 bucks. That's it.
SPEAKER_03If anything, they owe me money. But make sure you check us out on Buzz Sprout, though. Man, it's gonna be an eye-opener. Um, I'm gonna start working on the Instagram page more, the YouTube channel more, and it'll all be linked to all of that shit. So you don't have to go one stop, one stop shop. There you go, one and done.
SPEAKER_04Everybody's linked up.
SPEAKER_03I'll tell you what I do, man. All I'll do is that uh rolling with kid and play 12 inch. I have or the seven inch, yeah. We'll raffle that off on the next show.
SPEAKER_04Yep, we'll do a record raffle.
SPEAKER_03It'll be a free raffle. It'd be some trivia. The first one to comment. Come up with that.
SPEAKER_02Are Rick Rock and I available to participate? Maybe it's okay. We'll let we'll let the listeners and viewers have a chance at your stash.
SPEAKER_04And if they can't get it, then we'll put here's an idea.
SPEAKER_02Why don't you raffle off one of your records every podcast?
SPEAKER_04Fuck that we'll be doing podcasts every other month before you know it once every six months. Johnny Stash, right? Come on over now.
SPEAKER_02The dirty the dirty stash giveaway, right? You're like, wait a second. So that means by you know in 10 years, I'm not gonna have no, you'll have a lot of records still.
SPEAKER_03So this is the thing I want to do is um I want to plan a day where we could all get up, possibly on a Sunday, since it's easy for everybody, um, and have a get down at the tree mansion, man. Uh bring a crate of wax, Rick. I'll bring a crate of wax, and then maybe we'll get a special guest. We're at at Josh Tree's.
SPEAKER_02I was I was confused when you called it the tree mansion, too.
SPEAKER_03Tree mansion.
SPEAKER_02Oh, this this little the this little old thing, mobile abode, nothing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, hook up the 12s, we'll get some camera, we'll go live, we'll go live on not on Facebook. We'll get dinged. We'll go live on my TikTok.
SPEAKER_04There you go.
SPEAKER_03Uh, we won't get dinged for that.
SPEAKER_04Um as we don't talk about like you know politics and shit, you know.
SPEAKER_03We shall uh put that podcast that that actually that that live mix, we will put it on uh put it on something you could check it out where you won't be like, oh damn, they're dinging it. You know what I mean? But Josh got some dope wax, like I got a little bit. He got some OG pressings of some heat.
SPEAKER_02I started when I was young.
SPEAKER_03Me too. You got any regrets like records you seen back in the day? And she's like, eh, and now you're like, damn, it's just worth money.
SPEAKER_02Well, not really. I don't know what about you. I try not I try not to live with regrets.
SPEAKER_04Up on a Clark, what was it called? Gramophone records.
SPEAKER_03What was it called?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, um, it was like 13-14 volumes. I had like eight of them.
SPEAKER_02Oh shit, and mystery kept going.
SPEAKER_04It was um just the originals of the samples that uh you know hip-hop artists were using, you know.
SPEAKER_03You're not talking about the shallow and sounds, are you?
SPEAKER_04No, uh, the shallow and sounds was dope as fuck, and the way they set that up was more like uh a mixtape, you know.
SPEAKER_03So I know I have the first and second volume, but there's a three and a four.
SPEAKER_04Oh shit, the hidden chambers, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Man, just just talking about gramophone, like that place that's like a rite of passage for for all kinds of you know hip-hop or EDM heads to just you know roll through that that spot in Chicago on Clark Street.
SPEAKER_03The old the old gramophone, the old gramophone, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And the new gramophone still still has some gems in there. Oh, yeah, you know, yeah, you still you you can still experience it as a uh a young person, you know, curious about you know you know uh legendary record stores in Chicago. I would say gramophone is still up there, even though it's not in the old location, but the old vocation was uh man, it was the shit, dude.
SPEAKER_04Super it was like super cool library networking with like-minded people, yes, yes. Yeah, you'll probably run into someone probably, you know, like even though I don't know you, but we have uh we have something in common, it's the music, you know, and we can start talking shop, yeah. Especially if you're mc, a DJ, a producer, anything like that, even just uh just somebody collecting, you know. It's just like yeah, yeah, you know, I'll be I'll be there for hours just digging and talking and shit, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, if you got some time to kill, go record record digging, yeah. Your local record stores, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Shopping make me happy.
SPEAKER_02It's it's like meditation, yeah. For us here, what to choose for a music head.
SPEAKER_03I remember me and Rick, we used to go there and just um dude, we would spend like the whole day, dude, and I would spend like so much money on racks here, dude. Every time I'll drop at least 7,520 bucks, and like all the old crate diggers, they know the fucking trick, how to open up new records and listen to them. And if you don't like them, toss them to the side.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'll go through stack, man. Friday bigger than that, but I'll have them up on the side. You can't see, I'll just have like three or four in the rack.
SPEAKER_03Rick's like, he's he's I was like, You can't open those. He's like, I'll show you a trick. So he grabs the record, and you gotta have on denim, and you rub the record on your jeans.
SPEAKER_04When it does it, it heats up the plastic, and it'll it'll make a fun open it up, it's open.
SPEAKER_03You won't even know it's open, you won't even know it's open. So, all you kids out there to use some knives and all that shit. No, yeah, right on your pant leg. Yep, but uh, I'll tell you a record I regret buying. Um, Rick was like, Check this out, people even hilly. No, people under the stairs. It was their their second, third album. He was like, You should get this, Jay. And I'm like, um, I don't know, man. I didn't pick it up. Now those records are going for hundreds of hundreds of dollars right now.
SPEAKER_02Oh oh, you were yeah, you didn't get it. Holy crap! I did it, shoulda, woulda, coulda, dude.
SPEAKER_04I wanted to buy more rectangle albums. Did you rectangle?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_04Sample slayer. Is it sample slayer? You know, there was another one. Um, oh, what's the dude's name? Um, he was called uh Enter the Meat Market.
SPEAKER_03Oh, our man Arman van Helden.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, head headlin or Helden, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Arman Van Helden.
SPEAKER_02Yes, but it was a it was the was it Torrey Amos, the Tori Amos sample. That he uh what was his like one of his most famous breaks?
SPEAKER_03I just I just remember uh the sample slayer, which was all fucking loops like hip-hop loops.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03So there was a VHS that came with it. Yeah, that's the meat market into the meat market. Yeah, it was the elder, it was uh it was like a porno slash mixtape on VHS.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, cool.
SPEAKER_03I mean, dude, if you could find that shit, you probably can't even find it. Rick had it, somebody stole it.
SPEAKER_02It was that good, huh? You go that was the sticky and shit.
SPEAKER_03I know, right? Well, whoever stole it, I hope they still have it. Like that shit's probably worth a lot of money.
SPEAKER_04It's worth a lot.
SPEAKER_03I looked on eBay. Oh, you might just see it on eBay. No, I love after this after this show.
SPEAKER_04I know so it was that to the meat market, Armand van Helden, and the vinyl. It was like three three record vinyl uh comp with all his samples, beats, you know. Yep, it's a pretty cool, pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02No, I remember I remember that was uh that was a great era. I remember being very uh you know open to and listening to all kinds of new shit that was coming out at that time. That it was probably like mid-90s, I'd say when he was like at his um his pinnacle of success, you know, when he was pumping pumping shit out.
SPEAKER_03The golden era of music, the 90s. Yep, hip-hop was fucking oh, it was the golden era, so much good stuff. Yeah, golden era, dude.
SPEAKER_04I I was resonating with a lot of turntableism, like the invisible scratch pickles. Um, what's his name? Uh, is it Rob Swift? Rob Swift, yeah. You know, all these DJs they were making beats off of scratches and sampling it, you know.
SPEAKER_03Mr. Sinister, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Mr. Sinister, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm actually friends with him on uh Facebook. Yeah, um, they used to be called the X-Men. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04I had uh copyright issue with calling themselves that, so they just called it.
SPEAKER_03I had the VHS, dude. I don't know where the fuck it went, dude. Somebody probably stole that too.
SPEAKER_02You guys got me curious about this online van headland. I'm gonna show you a record. I know what I think I got something. Let me see if I got it. Hold on, I'll be right back.
SPEAKER_04He also does house music as well. Oh, yeah, I'm not sure if he's out of New York or not. Not too sure. It's like I buy records because I like the way they sound, not really who makes them. So I don't really follow artists when I collect music, it's just because I like how they sound, resonate. Like who made this? Oh, okay, yeah. I like that. You know, some people they're really good at remembering that shit, like photogenic memory.
SPEAKER_03I'm just like more of a know where it was made, where they're from. Yeah, I have a creative records, I know what records they look like, you know, with the exact I could tell in my record collection, even with the spines beat up, I could tell what records what. Yeah, so my wife's like, Oh, how the fuck do you find shit? That's like I just know. I know the spine, I know the cover, I know what it looks like, what it smells like.
SPEAKER_02All right, I found a little stack. Okay, you guys remember this one?
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Nice, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I have that. Yeah, it's like a double album.
SPEAKER_02This one's uh single, isn't it?
SPEAKER_04Does it have the witch doctor?
SPEAKER_02Witch Doctor and uh and Donkey. Yeah, yeah, it's got Witch Doctor on it. That that that was one of the that was one of the channels.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, a lot of people know about that.
SPEAKER_02And then I do got this guy.
SPEAKER_04That's the one.
SPEAKER_02There you go, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so there's a video tape, um, DHS tape. So it was playing the songs from that album, but it was like a a porno with graffiti.
SPEAKER_03That's it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna pull it out, but that's it.
SPEAKER_02My buddy, my buddy Steve Shafchik, uh gave me these albums a long time ago. Here's what I was talking about, that Tori Emo single.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, I don't know, but we can't even play it.
SPEAKER_02I remember it was pretty popular at like raves and clubs and shit back in the 90s. So yeah, Professional Widow, it was called.
SPEAKER_03I also have that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I got like four copies.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, it was it was just the funk. It was what I have that as well. Remember that in just the funk.
SPEAKER_03Answer the meat market, yeah. Oh yeah, this is what Rick was talking about right here. Shalling sounds, shallow sounds, yeah. Oh yeah, volume one and two. Oh yeah. Let's see what else I got in there. A lot of other stuff too, dude.
SPEAKER_04It was like boom. Mixtapes. Oh man, thinking we got Jay Dilla on there.
SPEAKER_02I was just talking, we were just talking yesterday at Scrubs'. Um, Kid A pulled out, you know, it was like nine different producers, and like who would who would you pick to do your uh solo album? And it was like, oh man, I would I mean out of the nine, I was like, I'll probably I would probably pick Jay Dilla and uh I'd go Mad Lib all day. That's that's that was Yoda's pick too, mad lib, and he's like, and and to top that off, he's like, I would want to you know be able to create each beat with him, you know. Imagine doing that to like co-produce with Mad Lib or Jay Dilla or any of your you know uh idols. You know, that would be that would be a heck of an experience, man.
SPEAKER_03So this is probably one of my most well, not my most expensive record, but like a grail that people always talk about. Um OG pressing pre-lawsuit copy.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. I think I have an OG pressing of that too. I think I picked it up in a crate for 20 bucks. I gave a guy 20 bucks, and it was just one of the records in there.
SPEAKER_03Was that it has the has the uh pimp sub hose down, which is not on you can't even find that shit on YouTube. Why uh Isaac Hayes sample. Oh but that's like one of my grills. I picked that up off my homie Adam Rivera. I think I paid a buck for it, 100 bucks.
SPEAKER_04Damn, it's well worth it.
SPEAKER_02I'll have to check mine and see. So that's it. If it pimps up holds down on it, hmm.
SPEAKER_04Yep, is it open?
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, it's open, it's been played.
SPEAKER_04I'll give you 20.
SPEAKER_02What a negotiator. What you bastard, no way. How do you do it, Rick? You are a pirate. He's like, I'll give you 20 if you if you're the worst of them. It's like I'll give you 20, or I'll just take well.
SPEAKER_03I see my backdrop, but if I lift the backdrop up, it's all records, all records, baby.
SPEAKER_02All my babies, all the dirt bag full of wax. Yeah, what's in your dirt bag, Johnny?
SPEAKER_04Wax, you like put them under an insurance policy.
SPEAKER_03You got homeowner's insurance. Oh shit.
SPEAKER_04No, something to think about, just something to think about.
SPEAKER_03So, um, I am gonna be cleaning out my record collection. Probably probably when it starts getting cold. I'm gonna come down here and get rid of a lot of shit.
SPEAKER_02So, um is it gonna be hard for you?
SPEAKER_03Uh, I got okay. So before I got the job I have now, I was on a little bit of rough times. I sold a lot of shit that I regret selling, but at the same time, it was stuff like where it was like I had, and it was like I'm not really gonna play this, and some other stuff was just like it was dope, like, but it was like I knew it was worth money and I just got rid of it. But I'll get it back. I think I had like the rush album where it's like the rush in big fucking words.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03I had uh the MCG album, the MC MC5 or MC, yeah, MC5s. Um the explicit copy, second pressing. I had the runaways, uh, second pressing or first pressing.
SPEAKER_04Oh fuck.
SPEAKER_03I had um then I had shit like uh Big Sean, uh J. Cole, which were some good pressings, they went for a lot of money, but I was like, I'll never play this. I just bought it to have collector's items, then I got rid of a lot of other shit that I but I was gifted with a lot of vinyl, and there was some weird shit in it, and I took it to Josh and I was like, You ever seen this before? He goes, No, but it's worth fucking money. So I think I took like a fucking crate, and dude, I had fucking credit for at least two weeks of record credit over it, yeah. So I was getting free records like crazy, yep. But you know what they say, sell some, buy more. Yeah, and there's stuff too. I'm looking for, and I'm like, oh, did I sell that? And I'll find it a week later.
SPEAKER_02Oh, wait, this is my record. Yeah, oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm buying it again. I buy a lot of weird shit too, dude.
SPEAKER_02Oh, we know.
SPEAKER_03I got a punk record. Uh, it's an Asian punk band called the One Two Three Four Five Six Sevens. Uh-huh. They were the band that played in Kill Bill. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Remember the fighting scene where they went in the kind of like a dojo or something like that?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And that band was playing. I have that record too. Nice. But I'm into a lot of weird shit, dude. Like, I'm into the cramps. Um, I'm into uh what else do I buy that's weird? Uh a lot of old school, like fucking 60s and 50s and 60s and 70s. Um the animals. I'm real big into the animals. I'm real big into CCR. Like really big. Can't get enough of them.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. I like Green River.
SPEAKER_03Green River, Tomb Show Shadow, Sinister Purpose. Um Bayou. They got a lot of good covers too, man.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, yeah. John Fogarty is uh is not only slept on, you know, as far as uh, you know, like I mean, he is considered one of the greats, and I'm sure you know many people think so, but I feel like he doesn't get as much credit as he deserves. No, you know, he alone as a as a solo artist and CCR, you know, in rock and rolls history in general.
SPEAKER_04They that's rocking this, it's right there with old boy from ACDC.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, that boy's young.
SPEAKER_04No, the lead singer, Angus is the guitar player with the short song.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um, one from the 70s, and after that the original one, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yup. I'll tell you who I'm real disappointed in as a band is Guns N' Roses, not really Guns N' Roses, but Axel Rose cannot fucking sing anymore. He sounds like Mickey Mouse, dude.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean you I mean that's uh those those tones and that pitch. That he was using is a young man's thing, you know, like it's gone. Yeah, he he probably blew out his vocal cords, you know, or or you know, they just get old and they don't they stretch out, you know. They get old, you can't do it forever, you know. It's like it's like expecting uh you know Jordan to play forever. Like if Jordan went back to the league now, he'd look bad.
SPEAKER_03You know, let's go back to what we were talking about earlier. Michael McDonald, he still has the voice.
SPEAKER_02Some people can preserve it, and other people's bodies are wired and just engineered differently. You know, maybe Axel, you know, lived a little bit rougher life than Michael McDonald. We don't know, you know, what kind of stress he put on his his vocal cords.
SPEAKER_03There's another artist too that um whiskey. I got your back, Axel.
SPEAKER_02I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_03He did a lot of fucking hit songs in the 70s for a lot of soundtracks. I want to say he did the footloose theme, Kenny Loggins, Kenny Loggins. That's another beast, dude.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they do like as well.
SPEAKER_03He did the Top Gun song.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he did like pop hits, but I thought he was entry focused power pop.
SPEAKER_03So Thundercat actually has a song with with Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald on it. Damn, it is dope as hell. Check that out.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so heavy hitters, bro. Yep, you motherfuckers don't know about Thundercat, you know.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Thundercat's a beast, dude.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I agree. I I thought I like that Thundercat. Who else do I follow, man? Um Tom Mish, Youssef Days. Yeah, he's a badass drummer, dude. And then uh what are they called? Jazz Boys. I follow Jazz Boys.
SPEAKER_03I've never heard of them.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it they just came out recently with some stuff I was following on YouTube.
SPEAKER_03Uh I think it's called Michelle L Michelle's Affair. L Michaels, yeah. Dude, I got a lot of their shit.
SPEAKER_02They're great. Have you heard any of the stuff they've done with Black Thought?
SPEAKER_03No, I know they have a don't they have an album out or just a single?
SPEAKER_02With Black Thought?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I think, yeah, they might have a whole album. I dude, it's the stuff that I've heard is like makes me real like remember why Black Thought is in my probably top three MCs.
SPEAKER_03There's another group too. Um damn, I can't think of what their name is, but they got a rendition of uh Fear of the Black Planet, it's called Fear of the Brown Planet. It's like it's like acid jazz rock, dude. It's fucking sick. Nice. I have that on wax.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, man. So don't stop digging.
SPEAKER_02Dig on. If you got a if you got a record store near you, go check it out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, even if you don't got a record player, start collecting, buy yourself a record player. There's no other sound like vinyl.
SPEAKER_02And too, they are like it is a collector's item, you know. It's uh you know, like like comic books or sports cards or Pokemon or any of that, you know, magic. Whatever your thing is, like you know, everybody listens to music. You can find you know stuff that is uh relatable to you know some of your other other hobbies. Like there's there's all kinds of records out there that you wouldn't even have even dreamed could exist, you know, and and it's fun looking through some bootleg stuff too that you might find, you know, when you're out of town at a store, you're like, what like you'll uh it's it's like thrift store, it's like thrift store shopping, you know, at its at its finest, because uh, you know, like everything's in, you know, you know, uh similar similar package and you know, easy to flip through, you know, it's uh it's bigger, it's not like you you're just going to it's it's it's like goal, it's like you know, uh uh 49 or going to look for gold.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yep. Yeah, and like I said, you'll you'll find an artist you've never even heard of. The album, the album art might look dope. You'll pick it up, take it home, and it's got a big old scratch on it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's worth no.
SPEAKER_03I mean, you'll you'll take it home, it's either gonna suck or it's either gonna be really dope.
SPEAKER_04In the mail, I have a couple Mad Lion record, and it looked like it got curled, like it went through like a roller and it curled up like that.
SPEAKER_03Uh was it hot when you ordered it? No, that's my worst fear about ordering records right now. Well, a couple months ago when this may be sitting checking on the truck, check the porch. That's how I keep texting my kids. Check the porch.
SPEAKER_04You know what? I never really crossed my mind until right now. I never worried about melting more like it was becoming cracked, you know.
SPEAKER_03When I lived on um farther north of where I stay now in Gary, I took my turntables out on the porch and was spinning. And I'll never forget I had a Marvin Gay record I put on the turntable, it was so hot, it's just bubbled up. I'm like, oh shit. So I was like, it I had to put something over my turntables.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, get it.
SPEAKER_03Oh so yeah, don't spin in the fucking heat. Don't and a lot of and if you notice record stores are more less busy in the summertime because you know, only the true diggers are gonna go pick up records and go straight home. Yeah, if you leave records in the fucking car, yeah, they'll warp, it'll warp bad too, man.
SPEAKER_04But there's a way to unwarp them if you do it right, which you need two pieces of glass, stick them in the oven, yeah, and let it bake in 200 for like I don't know, nine.
SPEAKER_03That's too much work, dude. They sell a device too where it's the two pieces of glass and it's got like the heater for the heat press. Yeah, you time it and it flattens the record.
SPEAKER_02I do have a uh a Tribe Call Quest single that I wouldn't mind uh because it's funny, like when I watch it, you know, when I watch the needle on it, it's like yeah, I don't know. Maybe I'd miss that, so I don't know if I'd ever uh I got records that the holes too big.
SPEAKER_03Oh and so flags put a sticker on the fucking uh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, put a sticker on each side of it and then put it right on the fucking turntable right in the middle, and it holds it in place. But it what do you mean?
SPEAKER_03You put it on the wrap a sticker right around the where it pops in at right there. I don't know what that's called.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, okay, but what if what if you're you got other records that are you know take it right off tight?
SPEAKER_03Take it right, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But then you want to so here's what you do you put it, you put the sticker on the record that's oh yeah, I guess you can because then you don't have to take it on and off, you leave it on there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, true.
SPEAKER_02Because you know, anyways, for those kids listening, we just troubleshooted that for you. Oh shot troubleshot that back in the day.
SPEAKER_03DJs used to put stickers over the actual record on the record where all the track listings were at, so you wouldn't know what the fuck they were spinning. Yeah, so if you ever buy a record and it's got fucking marker going around it or blacked out the label, that's what it's an old DJ record.
SPEAKER_02They wanted uh sleeper record, yeah. You know, like no, you can't steal my flavor.
SPEAKER_03I actually bought a 45 from Mayor Hawthorne that's got the it's got the track listing blacked out on it, and it's got some fucking heat on it, dude. Nice. So you bust that out, people are trying to see what you got. You're like, oh worry about it.
SPEAKER_02It's like uh fishermen not wanting you to know whether what not wanting you to know their spot.
SPEAKER_05Exactly.
SPEAKER_02Uh man, you're gonna milk it dry.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Um give me one minute, I'll be back. Keep the conversation going, then we'll get into some shout-outs. I'll be right back.
SPEAKER_04Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well shit. What do we talk about, Rick?
SPEAKER_04I'm talking about vinyl. You know, I got a c I got a I got a crate that got waterlogged from the flood. Oh, and I bought um jackets for the for the records, so when I clean them, I'll put them in there at least. So I get um well, I got sleeves. I need to be able to.
SPEAKER_02They still are they still like wet? Are you got them like spread out, like you got them airing out anywhere?
SPEAKER_04Well, I they're still sitting there. I gotta go through them, see what how damaged they are and make a sense, clean them vinegar, no vinegar and water. Hopefully, that'll eat corro eat up all the you know, whatever build mildew build up and stuff, you know. Yeah, I need a microfiber claw, so I'm in the process of that. Yeah, it's been a lot going on, man. I've been having woo, yeah.
SPEAKER_02When's uh when's your when's what what's the the next project you got coming on? The rick the mixtape.
SPEAKER_04Oh the Yoda Rock mixtape, yeah. I've been on hiatus with that.
SPEAKER_02Um like I said, uh man, I can't lie, you know, just just yeah, yeah, it happens, you know, shit gets put on the back burner. Yeah, and you you're preaching in the choir. I know how that goes, it's okay, it's okay.
SPEAKER_04Well, I've been um trying to create an exit strategy for where I'm at right now, you know. And I'm trying to uh put my eggs in the baskets. I've been researching for the last several months. I I got uh some ideas I'm gonna start putting on paper, and then including what we're talking about here with the radio station now. I'm excited about that, and then um, you know, we're talking about creating and legitimizing what we're doing, you know.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04I think uh that's some next level shit, you know.
SPEAKER_02Hell yeah, keeping the ball rolling, you know, one day at a time. Yeah, you eat an elephant one bite at a time, you know. That's that's how we roll, you know. We uh we got a lot on our plates, you know, with work and and you know, our own hobbies and the podcast and everything, but hey, you know, you only have so much time in a day, you know, to do what you gotta do, and we prioritize what we gotta do in the right way, so it'll it'll it'll get done eventually, you know. We're we're gonna have a lot of shit on the back burner, like Johnny and I started our project, it feels like months ago, and it's been on hiatus, you know. But you know, when when we're able to we uh we throw down, and that's uh how we keep the ball rolling.
SPEAKER_04You know, I mean the ideas are there, the seeds are planted, you know, it's a process, and and some of that is just kind of like in my perspective, hey, I need to decompress, and I have to slow down, man, because if not, you know, I'm gonna blow a head gasket.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you you know yourself better than anyone else. You gotta you gotta look out for yourself because you're no good for you or anyone else if uh if you blow a head gasket. Right.
SPEAKER_04Well, I do four things important in my life, you know. I got I got this podcast, you know, and what it means to me is a lot because I have a camaraderie of friends that I network with. Um, second is my career at this time, you know. You know, I'm a leader, I'm a supervisor, you know, I delegate, I have to coordinate, I have to uh discipline, you know. I'm not you know, it's it's a lot when you have 3,000 motherfuckers at you at one time and you're making decisions like that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Next thing is my family. The family for me is my daughter, you know. Um, she's an important thing in my life, and I want to make time with her and give her as much of my worldly wisdom, you know, um, before I leave this planet, you know, and then you know, the one my one, my girl, you know, my woman. You know, I need that time for some loving, some touching, some squeezing, like the sun. Man, before anything, baby, shit, you know. Love you, you know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, man, we all have things going on in our lives, man. We gotta, it's it's hard to separate this from that, you know what I mean. Like, I love coming downstairs and bumping records, dude. Like that's an escape for me. Yeah, um, love my kids, love my wife, man. I gotta spend time with them. Yeah, um, I love the music that I do, man. I love the people I do music with. Yeah, um, the podcast, man. The podcast has come so far, you know, and I feel like so many people wait for that next episode, or so many people are waiting to who we're gonna premiere next, or who we got, yeah. And and a lot that's why I want to get back to the live mix shows because one of our best, most top listened to podcasts is called dinner music, and it's all about music that Pony Boy played at a a dinner, some obscene prints music, and then it just went from there, and it just different genres of music that Rick played, and then he was digging through my crates playing music. I mean, you know, the the podcast was built around music and history and all that, dude. And now we're reaching out to local artists, local businesses, um, artists, breakdancers, beatboxers, Yuri Bosho Lane. Man, he's enigma. He's an enigma of beatboxers with the harmonica and all that.
SPEAKER_02Speaking of which, he is uh just to plug him real quick, he's got an event coming up on the 21st at Nighthawk in Chicago from noon till three. He's gonna be rolling handmade vegan sushi.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I've seen it.
SPEAKER_02And uh, and he's gonna be doing a performance with some uh some some uh dining music. So um come on, check that out. I know I'm gonna go. Uh, if you guys are able to go, uh, like I said, that's the 21st, it's Sunday of this month, and uh he's gonna be cooking on the uh on the stove and on the mic.
SPEAKER_03That's what's up, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I guess sushi cook sushi. Yeah, you cook the rice, never mind.
SPEAKER_03So you eat you eat sushi, right, Josh Tree?
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, yeah. I eat I I eat uh seafood.
SPEAKER_03So not to be plugging a restaurant after my stopped at the Sakura Bowl in Highland.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Chef's kiss.
SPEAKER_02Ah, yes. Yeah, they got they got this the fresh sushi, they they do uh like a grill. You could get hot food too. They got a kitchen, they got uh is it is it like a Mongolian grill style where where you can uh give it you like I think so get your ingredients and like give it to the guy to cook right there in front of you.
SPEAKER_03No, I think you just order off a menu. I don't know if they do have that. Okay, but I'll tell you what they do have ice cold sapporo. Is that Sapporo?
SPEAKER_02Sapporo, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's showing you in Japanese man, dude.
SPEAKER_04That's some strong shit.
SPEAKER_03I had one of those and some sushi, some shoshimi, a bowl of miso soup. Oh, it was a beautiful day.
SPEAKER_04Nice, sounds like it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, but um we're at the hour mark now, guys.

It it uh was a great event and you know um just had had a great time. Can't wait till next year. But uh, you know, again, thanks thanks for you guys uh for laying this platform, you know, for people like all of us uh artists here out there that you know want to network and want to be able to um have questions answered or um you know link with people that are like-minded. You know, it's uh it's a a great place to be, and I'm just you know thankful to be right here in the middle of it.

SPEAKER_02Um, well, let's let's it let's you know, music just sounds better off a record, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And you can roll the joint.
