Um talk a little bit about um, we've had Custom Aid on the show before. He's gave us a little background about himself. Talk a little bit about you, bro. Um, how you came up and got into the music game.

Um so I'll just start at the time when I first started taking like rapping uh serious. Uh I would say um probably like my senior year of high school. Um that's when I really first started like really jotting down, you know what I'm saying, bars or what have you. And then um I went to school in Nashville. I went to school in Tennessee. And so when I went to Tennessee, um I formed well, I didn't form a group, I joined a group. We called ourselves uh the starring artists. I was from Chicago, was one dude from Indianapolis, another dude from California, and another dude from Tennessee. And so we had got like three mixtapes there. And uh when I was in Nashville, I started kind of like you know, building a little reputation off uh for myself as far as a rapper is concerned. And so fast forward in uh 2005, I uh I moved back home to Chicago. Um once I moved back home, I just started recording. Like I didn't, I just uh my man had a studio at his crib, just started recording, just gave me a page, I'm just writing verses, recording songs. Uh and then I joined the um and I want to say probably around like 2008, 2009. Uh me and uh y'all know um Andreas Haley. Yep, oh yeah, yeah, Andreas Haley, man. That's my brother, man. Me and him. Oh, okay. That's what's up, dude. Yeah, that's that's that's that's my guy, man. Uh, but we was in a group together called Substance, and so we got a good group. Uh we did the group all the way up to like 20 2014 2015, and then that's when we uh you know branched out, you know what I'm saying, started solo careers. Uh so I would say my solo career started around 2016, but I've been doing it for real for real since probably like 2005.

Um full plate makes my I want to say it's my 11th or 12th album. Oh damn, hell yeah, dude. Yeah, uh I made a couple of EPs in between, so like as far as like EPs and albums together, I probably got about 16-17 projects out.

So, like uh, if nothing else, I I want to say since 2016, I've at least put out an album every year. Hell yeah, that's what's saying at the bare minimum. One year I think I put out three. Hell damn, dude. Hell yeah. So yeah, man, just you know, and it's and it's it's uh I don't know, I can say it's weird. I guess it's weird to me because it's like I've been doing it for a minute now, but it's just like now with uh with uh with the release of full plate, and then um I want to say I was talking to one of my other producers, Decca Durves. He produces an album called Beautiful Dirt. And I want to say I dropped Beautiful Dirt. I want to say late 2024.

I think he froze up. Custom, you got anything to um to uh add with the conversation with uh Ilgord as far as uh uh coming up because we we did an interview uh what how you go in it?

Yeah, when we when we uh we did a cup uh actually you guys uh for solar five album. Oh yeah, yeah. Yeah, solar fives album. We uh we talked about that, yeah. But waiting for Gordo. So uh he you know, I met him, like I've known of him. Um I know well I know of him, you know, because of Andreas Haley, but like prior to that, like I was aware of like Andreas and and Gordo like through substance, you know, like I you know I knew of them in the scene, but I didn't really know him like that. And then one day, you know, I just reached out to Andreas and then we knocked out uh It's Nasty outside that we dropped. And then from there, like you know, I got to meet like their whole crew, you know, and that's how I met Gordo. And like I was always a fan of Gordo. He did a dope album with Decca Dirk, shout out to Decca Dirst. Uh it's called Um Beautiful Dirt. So, you know, when I listened to the album, like, yo, you know, Gordo's really dope. So, you know, it was just like you know, just saying what's up to each other, being cordial, and then um and he knew that I already worked with Andreas. So I just say, hey, if you want to try it out, let me know. And and then here we are, you know. But it was an interesting like process, um, you know, as far as like collabing on this, um, you know, because when essentially like it's a little funny story, kinda, because you know, when I make beats, like I always try to like, I always have an intention, right? Like, I put a beat folder together, and then I'd be like, okay, let me send this. And I always put like the stuff that I really want them to rap on. And then in this instance, like he only picked like one beat that I really wanted it to rap on. Oh damn. And he like, you know, he kind of just went a different route and he explained why. But you know, at the time, I was like, man, I'm like, uh, he didn't really like pick anything that I I liked, you know. But I also threw like a bunch of random beats in there only because like I always want to give the rapper, you know, the the chance to like pick the the vibe and and the whole style, you know what I'm saying? So like yeah, um, so yeah, like you know, when I sent him the initial beat pack and then what I initially intended and what what the end result was was not what I expected, but what Bordo did was like really, really dope. And you know, he like he had everything laid out. He showed me one song, and I'm like, you know what? Don't show me anything. I trust your judgment, just do you, and then send it to me when it's ready. And I was just like, damn, this is dope. Like, you know, he he picked beats that I I didn't really like care for, but at the same time, like what he did and the features he got and all that, it just like he literally like put a masterclass and like you know, being a conduit to like my my beats and him just like you know doing what he does lyrically. And like he he like it was like you know, it was like carving out a diamond type of thing, you know. Like he did, he did his work, man. And it's like uh, you know, not because he's rapping on my album and I'm the producer, but like, you know, overall, like the full plate is literally like something for everyone, like there's something you're gonna want out of it, you know. It's like a 10-course meal, you know what I'm saying? So so yeah, man, like that's basically how it came about and stuff, man. So yeah.

I was gonna ask about the production too, because I've heard the other albums you produce, like every album you put out, I've listened to the production, and this production was like any other that I've heard from you. So I was gonna ask, like, I was like, I wonder if he sent him all the beats and he just rapped to all the beats in the folder, or if he or if he didn't.

Well, that was the thing. Like, I had like, you know, I initially sent him a certain amount that I wanted him to rap on, but then I also throw in like the equal amount of things that he might be interested in, but you know, I never like I throw some curveballs in there, but you know, there was other stuff that I had just in case because like I said, and what I intended and what what the outcome was were two different things, you know what I'm saying? So, and then like you know, through the process, like of what he explained, you know, it's like he wanted to go a different route, he didn't want to remake what he he's already done, and you know, so like it's crazy. Like, I literally make a bunch of beats every day, and then you know, when I have someone in mind, I'll definitely put stuff together for them, but then I'll also throw a bunch of stuff that I'm not sure about because like you know, it might be a little too edgy or too soft or you know, too mellow or whatever. So, you know, but I don't ever want to take that option away from an artist, you know, like from a rapper. Like, you know, sometimes when they hear shit, they're gonna hear it, and if it talks to them, they're gonna do it, you know what I'm saying? And to me, that's that's the initial move, you know. So I respect that. So that's exactly what happened, though. Like, you know, Gordo will tell you, like, I had intended a whole different sound, and he's like, nah, bro, I got this, and he did his thing, right? So, yeah, and you know, so so yeah, like I'm I'm just I'm super proud and like you know, really like happy that like he did what he did, and it's dope to like have a rapper that knows what he has to do, and you know, there's not a lot of hand on like it was on my behalf, like it was very effortless. Like, I just sent him the beat pack and he got he worked on it what he had to do and he did him, and like from the features to like the way he arranged everything, you know, it was really dope, you know. And then shout out to the homie Dr. Mindbender too, you know, for putting the finishing touches, but like overall, man, like you know, you know, Gordo's a vet, bro. Like, you know, he'd been in the game for a minute, yeah. So like I didn't expect anything less, but I definitely didn't expect what we have. And it's always dope, it's always a surprise, like, you know, when someone kind of like he literally took took it to another level in regards to like what we could do sonically, you know what I'm saying? And it also showed people a little bit more of my range because I literally like to stay in one type of lane, but like you can't sit, like if you were to listen to this album and you didn't know who we were, you would assume that there was different producers on this album, and that's another thing too, you know, because like I like making all kinds of stuff, but there is a particular lane I stay in, but you know, Gordo saw some, you know, he heard different things, so and here we are, you know what I'm saying? So it was dope, it's dope, man. And I hope you guys listen to it and like you know, um, you know, vibe off with it. There's some summer bangers on there, there's something for everyone, man. Like, you know, there's there's some life shit.

Like when um when he sent me the beats, I think you know, I think he sent me uh a 50 pack, you know what I'm saying? He said, and out that 50, I chose 20 initially. I chose 20 out the 50. And so then out that 20 I chose, I said, okay, I already kind of had an idea of how I wanted the album to sound. Um I knew which direction I wanted to go into before I even heard the beats. So as I was listening to the beats, I was already listening for specific types. Um so out that 20, I then eliminated the 10. I think I eliminated nine that would be the typical beats that I would rap over, like with my typical style aggressive bars, boom bad. Uh and so once I nailed it down to those uh the 10 that made the album, um, I literally just let the song kind of tell me which direction to go in. Um I could have definitely got on my typical, you know, bar heavy stuff, but I was like, no, I want this just to be a dope album, period. Like I want it to be hip hop by default. I want people to hear it and be like, man, this is the album was thought out very well. Yes, yeah, yeah. I was this was probably this out of all of my albums, this is probably the one I was the most intentional with.

I didn't look at it, I didn't check out the name or anything, I just let it play and walked away, and I just see what resonated. Um so at that point I went to cool. But then once we met each other at uh his release party, that's when you know we kind of met. I told him the album's dope or how you then shortly after that, we kind of linked and he put it out there like, man, what's up? It was kind of just like, you know, at that point, I knew that I wanted to create something special. Because for me, I was like, bro, I know what he did with Iron God, I know what he did with Dre. I can't be the fall. You know what I'm saying? I can't I can't be the like, okay, you know, that project goes, that project goes. When he did with Wordo is um nah, I couldn't be the fallout, so I knew that I uh I wanted to uh do something special, and that's probably why I went into this project with a lot more attention.
