In this episode of The Sacred Flame, we explore a deeply important and often unspoken experience: spiritual betrayal.

What happens when the person you trusted to guide your healing crosses a boundary? When a teacher, guru, or healer becomes unsafe—emotionally, psychologically, or even sexually?

This episode is an invitation to reclaim your power.

We explore:

  •  The dynamics of power, projection, and authority in spiritual spaces
  •  How spiritual leaders can become idealized—and how that can lead to harm
  •  Real examples of boundary violations, including inappropriate relationships with students
  •  The psychological impact of betrayal in healing relationships
  •  Why sovereignty—not submission—is the true path of healing

You are not broken for trusting.
And you are not lost for questioning.

You are being called back to yourself.

What You’ll Gain

  •  Language to understand and process spiritual betrayal
  •  Validation for complex feelings like grief, anger, and confusion
  •  Insight into power dynamics in spiritual and healing spaces

Before we begin today's episode of The Sacred Flame, I want to offer a space of intentional pause. Today, we are diving into deeply sensitive territory. We will be discussing the systemic abuse of power within spiritual and religious institutions, including explicit naming of sexual boundary violations, spiritual grooming, and financial exploitation. As a licensed mental health professional, I want to remind you that your safety is the priority. If at any point you feel a tightening in your chest or a sense of overwhelm, please feel empowered to pause this recording and tend to your nervous system. While I am a therapist, please remember that this podcast is for educational and soul alignment purposes. It's not a substitute for a direct therapeutic relationship. If you're ready, take a deep grounding breath and let's begin. What happens when the person you trusted to guide you spiritually leaves you drained, violated, betrayed, and or hurt emotionally, spiritually, financially, and even sexually? What happens when you're left questioning yourself, God, your intuition, your judgment, and even your very own reality and truth? Not a lot of people get to talk about this part of the healing journey. Fear, doubt, shame, and even the community can stand in the way when the healer, guide, teacher, or guru disappoints and even betrays you. This podcast is for educational and inspirational purposes only. It is not a substitute for therapy, medical advice, or professional care. Welcome to the Sacred Flame, a space where mental health, spirituality, sexuality, and ancestral wisdom meet. I'm LaToya St. Pierre, licensed mental health therapist, holistic sex therapist, yoga teacher, and spiritual midwife. All of this simply means I help people birth new versions of themselves. And I'm so grateful you're here. Each episode is an invitation to slow down, tend to the fire within, and remember the power that already lives within you. So take a breath, settle in. The flame is waiting. Let's begin. Hello, beautiful souls, and welcome back to the sacred flame. This is a space where we return to ourselves, where we question, unravel, and remember what has always been within us. In today's episode, we're talking about something that is often unseen but deeply felt. What happens when the teacher, the healer, the guide, the guru reveals themselves to be operating from a space of harm. From the headlines of the Epstein Files to the quiet collapses of local gurus in our own neighborhoods, the mask is falling. Many of us are being confronted with a hard truth. Authority is not the same as integrity. And that realization is shaking all of us. But I also believe it can awaken us. Let's begin with a story. It's titled The Keeper of the Well Once, in a land parched by a long drought, there was a woman who carried a great thirst. She had traveled many miles, her throat dry, her spirit weary. Eventually she came upon a magnificent garden, and at its center sat a man, the keeper of the well. He told her, I am the only one who can draw the water. The well is so deep and the spirits are jealous. If you try to drink alone, the water will turn to sand. But if you serve me, if you give me your gold and follow my word, I will pour for you. And because she was so thirsty, she believed him. She spent years tending his garden. She gave him her jewelry, her labor, and eventually she let him touch her in ways that made her skin crawl, because he had told her that his touch was the blessing that kept the water flowing. But one night, while the keeper slept, the woman crept to the well. She looked down and saw something he never told her. The well was fed by an underground river that ran directly beneath her own feet. The keeper didn't own the water, he was just standing on top of it, charging her for what was already hers. The betrayal wasn't just that he lied about the water. It was that he made her forget she was the river. That story of the keeper, it is the archetypal blueprint for spiritual betrayal. When we are thirsty, grieving, searching, or in a dry season, our psychology shifts into a high vulnerability state. The brain stops looking for a peer and starts looking for a protector. This is where transference begins. We project the needs we have for a safe parent or divine authority onto the person at the well. We don't see a human, we see a miracle. John Bowby's attachment theory explains that we are wired to seek a secure base. When a leader positions themselves as your only protection against evil, they are hacking your biological attachment system. I know this fog because I've stood in it. I'm sharing this as a therapist and as a woman who has had to reclaim her own gold. In my journey through different spiritual communities, I have navigated the gut punch of financial violations and the confusing blur of inappropriate boundary crossing behavior. I remember the freeze. I stayed because my attachment system convinced me I needed that well to survive. This is what Dr. Jennifer Freed calls betrayal trauma. When you depend on someone for survival and they cause you harm, your brain literally blinds you to the abuse to keep the bond intact. But I want to pause here and ask you, do you know someone who's had this experience? Or have you? I want you to know that there are more of us out there than you think. Your truth has been, is, and will be lived by many. We see this everywhere. In the Catholic Church, where the sacred shielded decades of documented clergy abuse, in Bigram Yoga where the heat masked harassment, and in the black church where the prophetic is sometimes used as a cloak for psychological and financial control. When the institution protects the image of the leader over the safety of the seeker, this is institutional betrayal. It's a secondary wound that tells you your pain doesn't matter as much as their reputation. Whether it's a cathedral, a megachurch, or a yoga studio, the architecture is the same. It relies on you believing that your access to the divine is only possible through their approval. Now let me be clear and fair. Not every healer, guide, or pastor is like this. There are beautiful, high integrity souls holding space with humility. But here's the truth. The existence of good guides does not remove your requirement to be discerning. A true guide will encourage your questions. In predatory environments, the currency is fear. This can manifest as financial coercion. We see it in the constant demand for money from certain elders or leaders who claim that your financial seed is the only thing keeping evil away. They use spiritual bypassing to suggest that if you have a financial boundary, you have a poverty spirit. This is a manipulation of your faith to bypass your logic. Legally and ethically, this is spiritual extortion. When a leader uses fear to support their own lavish, high consumption lifestyle, they are not practicing ministry. They are practicing exploitation. If your spiritual safety has a price tag that only benefits the leader's closet or car collection, that is a red flag. And this leads us to the ultimate blurring, sexual consent. In my world as a therapist, the lines are drawn in stone. The American Counseling Association takes a clear stance. Power changes the nature of consent. It is not a soul contract or tantric initiation when a teacher makes a sexual advance. It is a boundary violation. If someone holds influence over your soul, your trauma, or your identity, they cannot consensually be in your bed. If they tell you that your resistance is just your ego, they are using your healing journey as a weapon against you. They are leading you into their own unhealed hunger for control, profit, or personal gratification. But here is where everything shifts. I want you to hear me clearly, soul to soul. If you were deceived, it is not because you were foolish. It is because you were operative. You were operating from a place of high integrity, and someone else used that light against you. That is not a reflection of your lack. It is a reflection of their malice. This is not just betrayal. This is initiation, an initiation into discernment. And discernment is not distrust. Discernment is the ability to stay open without abandoning yourself, to receive guidance without dependency, to listen while still evaluating. And the real question becomes, can you trust yourself? Even after being intentionally deceived by someone operating in malice? The answer is yes, because you are the one who finally saw the truth. You are the one who walked away. That is the ultimate proof of your power. Remember, discernment is not a wall, it is a filter. Discernment is an executive function of your soul. It allows you to vet the source before you offer your spirit. Today I want to offer you this sovereignty checklist to carry in your spirit and utilize as a means of honoring your divine right to choose. Ask yourself these questions. The access test. Does this person claim to be the only source of your healing or protection? Do they tell you that you are uncovered without them? The pedestal test, do they share their own humanity or do they live in luxury off your labor? The boundary test, do they respect your no? If you say no to a financial request or a touch, do they honor it or do they spiritually shame you? And finally, the power test. Is there any sexual or romantic blurring? A true mentor is there to hold the container for your growth, not to fill their own cup with your energy. I truly believe in reciprocity, fairness, and mutually beneficial energy exchanges. If the flow is only one way, it isn't a blessing. It is a siphon. And listen, if you find that processing this is too heavy to carry alone, please hear me. There is no shame in reaching out for professional support. Sometimes the fog of spiritual betrayal is thick, and having a qualified trauma-informed mental health professional can help you untangle the threads of your intuition from the threads of the trauma. You deserve a safe place to land. Before we close, let's bring this back to the body. If it feels safe, I invite you to engage in what I like to call the rooted minute. Gently close your eyes. Take a slow breath in through your nostrils.

Hold briefly and exhale through your mouth. Bring to mind a moment where something didn't feel right.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe a request for money that felt like pressure. Or a touch that felt too long. Just notice. You were learning. Promise yourself that you will listen now. The moment you realize the guru is human is the moment you are invited to become whole. You were not foolish for trusting. You were brave for being open. The most aligned practitioners in this world don't want your devotion, and they certainly don't want your bank account. They want your freedom and for you to recognize your own sovereignty.
