The Great Commission is found in the Bible in Matthew 28:19-20.

The Great Commission is the heartbeat of every believer’s calling—a divine mandate given by Jesus after His resurrection. In Matthew 28:19–20, Jesus instructs His followers to “go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you.” This charge is not merely a suggestion but a sacred assignment that carries both authority and promise. Christ assures us that as we step out in obedience, He is with us always, empowering every effort to share His love and truth. What is the Great Commission? You'll find it in the Bible in Matthew chapter 28, verses 19 and 20. It says, Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you, and surely I am with you always to the very end of the age. Jesus gave this command to the apostles shortly before he ascended into heaven, and it essentially outlines what Jesus expected of the apostles, of their followers, and what Jesus expects of you and me. Have you led people to Christ? Have you made disciples yet in your life? It's interesting to note that in the original Greek, the only direct command in Matthew 28, 19 through 20 is make disciples. The Great Commission instructs us to make disciples while we are living our lives and going throughout the world. It's worth considering that if we're not going to the other side of the world today, to China or Russia or India, Jesus expects us to make disciples right in our own hometown. The instructions to go, baptize, and teach are commands, the ones that people really ignore. Most people have not led even one person to Christ. Welcome to God's Promises Podcast. I'm Pastor Ed Brady, and today we take a look at the Great Commission. How are we to make disciples? By baptizing them and teaching them all that Jesus commanded. Make disciples is the primary command of the Great Commission. Going and baptizing and teaching are the means by which we can fulfill the command to make disciples. What is a disciple? A disciple is someone who receives instruction from another person. A Christian disciple is a baptized follower of Christ, one who believes in the teaching of Christ and follows them. A person who's a disciple of Jesus Christ loves Jesus completely, imitates Jesus' example, well, loves Christ, loves what he did for us on the cross, believes in the resurrection, possesses the Holy Spirit, and does his work for Christ each day. The command in the Great Commission to make disciples means to teach or train people to follow and obey Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. However, the command to make disciples falls on deaf ears in many cases. Most Christians, I believe, have not even led one person to Christ. How about you? Many theologians understand that Acts 1.8 is also part of the Great Commission, but you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. The Great Commission is enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit, not by your power. The Great Commission is enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are to be Christ's witnesses, fulfilling the Great Commission in our cities, in our states, in our countries, and anywhere else God sends us to the ends of the earth and in our own hometown. Throughout the book of Acts, we see how the apostles began to fulfill the Great Commission. The book of Acts, if you'll study that, in the first seven chapters, that Jerusalem is evangelized. Second, then the Spirit expands the church through Judea and Samaria. That's Acts 8 through 12. And then finally the gospel reaches to the ends of the earth in Acts 13 through 28. Today we continue to act as ambassadors for Christ, and we plead on Christ's behalf that people be reconciled to God. That's in 2 Corinthians 5.20. We prayed on Christ's behalf that people be reconciled to God. We who are born again have received a special gift. It's called the faith that was entrusted to God's holy people. You'll find that in Jude 1.3. Jesus' words in the Great Commission reveal the heart of God, who desires all people to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. That's 1 Timothy 2.4. The Great Commission compels us to share the good news until everyone has heard the biblical truth of salvation by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We'll continue to look at the Great Commission right after this.

It talks about evangelism, going into the world and making disciples, teaching them what God has taught us through Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord. Biblical evangelism begins with prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in witnessing, open doors of opportunity, and clear understanding of the bad news of sin and wrath, and the good news of love, grace, mercy, and faith. The Great Commission is Jesus' command for us to share what He has taught us with others. In Matthew 28, 18 through 20, it lets us know that there are rewards for those who carry out the Great Commission. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit now and forever, and empowerment and presence, because he's always with us daily. In conclusion, one wonderful tool that we can use to fulfill the Great Commission is the Apostles' Creed. It's a prayer that summarizes the basics of Christianity and is a useful tool when you're talking to someone about what is Christianity. The Apostles' Creed is as follows I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Universal Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Use this prayer as a tool to lead others to Christ. It's called the Apostles' Creed. We respond to Christ's command to the Great Commission with a great big yes. We respond to the Great Commission by saying to the Lord, Yes, Lord, I will do it. Amen. Thanks for watching our God's Promises podcast. I'm Pastor Ed Brady.
