From a Christian theological perspective, eternity is not merely an infinite extension of chronological time, but a radical entry into the uncreated, timeless life of God. Far from a static or ethereal state of boredom, the Christian hope of eternity—specifically the reality of heaven—is the consummation of human destiny. It is the ultimate restoration of fellowship between the Creator and His creation, where the limitations of our fallen world are permanently dissolved. As a seminary professor might emphasize, heaven is the fulfillment of cosmic teleology; it is the "New Jerusalem" where God makes His dwelling place with humanity, ushering in an era defined by unhindered joy, perfect justice, and the ultimate realization of human purpose in the presence of the divine.

Central to this conception of eternity is the profound reality of eternal reward, a theme heavily emphasized in the teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus did not preach a vague spirituality, but a tangible kingdom where a life of faithfulness, sacrifice, and love bears eternal fruit. He consistently urged His followers to reorient their priorities away from the fleeting security of this world, famously commanding in the Sermon on the Mount:

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19-20)

These heavenly treasures represent the enduring value of a life lived in alignment with God's will, suggesting that our actions in time ripple into eternity with profound significance.

Ultimately, the promise of heaven stands as the anchor for the soul amidst the trials of earthly existence. Jesus comforted His disciples on the eve of His crucifixion by framing eternity as a welcoming home prepared specifically for them, promising:

"In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." (John 14:2-3)

Therefore, eternal reward is not a transaction based on human merit, but a gift of grace that fulfills the deepest longing of the human heart—to be fully known, fully loved, and eternally at home in the presence of God.

Do you know you're going to live forever and forever and forever? That's a promise that's in the Bible. And that's what we're going to study today on God's promises. Eternity. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. Everlasting life, forever, in eternity. And if you believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, your eternity is in heaven. Your spirit will live forever somewhere after this life. And if you don't believe in Jesus, if you reject Jesus, well, he's got a place for people who don't want to live with him forever in heaven, and it's called hell. It's important for us to want to live in heaven and do our best to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior and serve him exactly as he directs us to serve him in God's word, the Bible. I respectfully suggest that you write down the Bible verses that I give you so that you can study them later in your own personal Bible study time, okay? John 5 24. Most assuredly I say to you, he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment, but is passed from death into life. That's important for us to pass from death into life. And the only way to do that is through Jesus Christ our Lord. I am the resurrection and the life. He is the only way to heaven. Other people will disagree with you, but hold on to that truth tight, because Jesus loves you unconditionally, and he has forgiven you for all of your sins by what he did on the cross two thousand years ago. From 1 John 5, 20. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding that we may know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. There's one God, there's one Savior, Jesus Christ His Son, and the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, is the one who lives inside of us who are born again and teaches us the right way, the right choices, the right thing to do in every situation. Now you don't get into heaven by doing the right things. Sometimes when I ask people, are you going to heaven? their common response is, Well, I hope I've been good enough. Nothing in the Bible about being good enough. In fact, we can't be good enough to get into heaven. That's why we needed a savior, a substitutionary atonement, a substitution. He died for us and for all of my sins and all of your sins on the cross over 2,000 years ago. John 6 51. Write down the scriptures, study them later in your own personal Bible study time. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, and the bread I shall give is my flesh, which I give for the life of the world. Whenever he said to the crowds, eat my body, drink my blood. Most of them left him. Just a few followers stayed on with Jesus after that time, I believe 120, while thousands of people left, because this is a hard teaching. But we use a symbol of that body and blood in communion, the bread and the wine or grape juice. And it's important for you to have communion on a regular basis, either at church or in your own home. Psalm 23.6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Now there's a good God's promises verse to memorize. I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. That's Psalm 23.6. Goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. That just makes me smile on the inside to hear that. It's important for us to do our best to do what we can to serve Jesus and follow him. From here to eternity. You're watching God's Promises. Today, eternity is our topic. Welcome back. Today on God's Promises, we're studying eternity. John 11, 25 and 26. Jesus said to her, Martha, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this? That's what he asked Martha. And that's what I'm asking you right now. Do you believe this? I sure hope so. John four fourteen. Whoever drinks of the water I shall give him will never thirst, but the water that I give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal, everlasting life. It's important for us to eat his body, drink his blood, the bread, the wine, or grape juice. It's important for us to take communion, and it's important for us to live read the living water, which is the word of God every day. John 4 14, whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst, but the water I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. John four fourteen. One of my favorite images of Jesus is the Good Shepherd. You like that one? One of the things that Jesus said is so true in the Bible, John 10, 27 and 28. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me, and I will give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand. Jesus has you in the palm of his hand, and he's holding on tight to you. Satan tries to destroy your relationship with Jesus. And Satan reminds you of the sins you've committed whenever you think about loving Jesus or having a relationship with Jesus. But God has forgotten your sins as far as the East is from the West. There's no end to that. From the east to the west, there's no end. God has forgotten your sins. So He has forgiven you, forgive yourself. It's important for us to remember that after this life we go to one of two places. Hell is for people who don't want to be with God forever. Heaven is for people who want to be with God forever. And I pray sincerely that you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, and that you serve Him, that you love Him, that you have a very special relationship with Him. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I'll dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Forever is such a long time, and it's important for you to make sure that when it comes to heaven or hell, that the place that you are forever is in heaven with Jesus.
