In Episode 35, comedians Adam Gilbert and Maggie Hughes DePalo join Pat McGann for a laid-back conversation that moves between stand-up, life on the road, and Midwest roots.

Adam shares his path from Indiana to Chicago’s comedy scene and eventually to the Comedy Cellar in New York, along with the realities of touring, open mics, and the occasional rough night on stage. Maggie tells stories from the road, including a memorable encounter with Michael J. Fox at his Nashville fundraiser.

Plus, Midwest sports parenting, father-daughter dances, and why Lakeview is the best neighborhood to move to post-breakup. Rounding things out are lighter detours into skincare, life choices, and Adam’s decision to cut off the resources.

🎧 New episodes every Thursday — filmed at Tiege Hanley Studios in Chicago.

SPEAKER_01

It's episode 35 of the Pat McGann Show. This week, Pat welcomes Maggie Hughes DePaulo and Adam Gilbert. The Pat McGann Show is brought to you by Tee Chanley, Uncomplicated Skin Care for Men. And now, here's Pat.

SPEAKER_06

All right, live from the Tee Chanley studios in the west side of Chicago. This is uh episode 35. This is my daughter's number, her birth date, 35. I love the number. Big hurt. This one is like a Washington Tallman episode because I got my Southside buddy here, Maggie, who's DePaulo, back joining the pod. Maggie, great to see you. Oh, thanks. You have been busy.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I've been busy. I've been on the road.

SPEAKER_06

I love the shirt because I had like on the top of my notes here. I saw your post. You were just at a gig with Michael J. Fox, which I mean, come on. We all meet people doing this. You're on the road, it's showbiz. But Michael J. Fox has got to like stop you in your tracks.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my God. I've been a fan forever. It was awesome. Um, I also have been working on a bit about Teen Wolf, like how I was like just like a hairy teenager who played basketball and I looked like Teen Wolf.

SPEAKER_06

That was you.

SPEAKER_03

And then I yeah, that was me. And then simultaneously got asked to do his fundraiser in Nashville. So I thought I've got to get a Teen Wolf t-shirt to wear to the event, and he loved it.

SPEAKER_06

Did you wear that there? Oh yeah. Where did you find that?

SPEAKER_03

Uh on the web.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, really? Yeah. Are they gonna give your secrets away?

SPEAKER_03

I uh no, I don't even remember. It was like two weeks ago. I just like looked up like Teen Wolf t-shirt. It came and then I threw it on under like a fun blazer. Um it was the first thing he noticed when we met. Like he was like, nice shirt. It was awesome. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

That is so cool. Yeah, did you like uh get a chance to talk to him much or so they're they do this big red carpet thing.

SPEAKER_03

So it was down at uh Belmont University in Nashville, they do it every year for um his Parkinson's Foundation. 3,000 people come out. There's like a music He has Parkinson's? Yeah, no, I'm kidding. Comedy! I think so, unless he's just a really good actor. Um so I got to meet him on the red carpet. He he is wheelchair bound, like he really has a hard time getting out of the wheelchair. So all the uh pictures and stuff, he was in the wheelchair the whole uh the whole night, um, which was great. And then um, so you don't not a lot of intimate talk, just quick pictures. He's got a whole entourage. He has a trainer or like a PT guy. If you've seen his documentary, it's a guy that follows him everywhere.

SPEAKER_06

I've not seen that. It's a documentary, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's awesome.

SPEAKER_06

My kids are gonna be really pissed about this every time I turn the TV on.

SPEAKER_03

Well, it's I'm picking the documentary and they this is I mean, I mean, they've seen Back to the Future. They've seen I mean it's he's kind of a generationally like everyone loves him. So, but the documentary talks about how long he's had this. It's kind of an like he's it was a 29, right?

SPEAKER_06

So he's because he was diagnosed and did not share it for quite a while, I remember for a long time.

SPEAKER_03

And then if you if you watch documentary, he's got his hands in his pockets and a lot of the stuff that he did. Like he didn't, you know, he didn't tell anybody. Um so he's in the wheelchair the the whole night, the event is over, and then I was in the back with my mom, and I brought a couple friends, and he's wheeling by me, and we were just gonna like say goodbye. I mean, he looks exhausted by the end of like an evening like that, and he puts the brake on his chair, he looks up at me, and he's like, You're really effing funny. He's like, I want a picture with you. Yeah. So he he's like, I want to stand up. So he stands, he's like, You guys have to hold me. Like, and my mom and I, my friends, like got to take a picture with him with my shirt. Like, it was we were like obviously sobbing. Um man. Well, really great guy. I mean, they've raised the Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised like one billion dollars for Parkinson's. Is that right? Yeah, it's incredible. I think that night alone was like a million and a half.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he has really taken his platform, used it so well, and I mean you cannot think of a bigger guy in the 80s for for I mean, I don't a few years ahead of you, but like he was it. That's it. Started with and you watched it all happen in front of you, family ties, and then into uh Back to the Future, Teen Wolf, all the uh He's currently on Shrinking TV, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I haven't seen the episodes yet. He's on like the new season, but he's still acting.

SPEAKER_06

And he's still with Tracy Allman. Is it Tracy?

SPEAKER_03

Is what he's still with his wife. She was not at the event, but they're still married. Tracy Pullman.

SPEAKER_06

Is it Pullman? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not Tracy, not Tracy Allman, Tracy Pullman.

SPEAKER_03

Breaking news. Wait, speaking of breaking news, yeah. CNN announced him passing away like a week before this event, like accidentally announced Michael J. Fox died. They were talking about it at the event, yeah. Because there's all these things. Were you about to cancel your flight? Well, I was like, that's a bummer. Just got this shirt. Um but they had all these uh uh news outlets interviewing people on the red carpet, and um, I want to say that the CNN, well, they were weren't gonna be there, but they were la Everyone was kind of joking about it at that at the point, like it was fake news. But yeah, they announced that.

SPEAKER_06

Did they have clips of it?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean they were that that was like the big thing happening while we were there is he's alive. So did he talk?

SPEAKER_06

Did he address the people? Did he have like a speech?

SPEAKER_03

He doesn't he did not talk. Uh Willie Geist was like the MC, and he went and like interviewed him up in the where his seats were for a minute, yeah, um, in between like the music and the comedy. Um who was all on the show? So it was Little Big Town opened the show, a musical artist, and then um or a band. Is that what they're calling him now? Band. And then they changed the the stage. Uh Dusty Slay, Aaron Weber, and myself did 10 minute sets of comedy. Oh, great. And then Eric Church closed it out.

SPEAKER_06

He's a singer? Yes.

SPEAKER_03

He's like a massive country artist.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I know who he is. Okay, yeah. Yeah, what's the banger? Eric Church banger? Anyone?

SPEAKER_03

Record year.

SPEAKER_06

Record year?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um, take me in a turn. Oh, is that him? No, it's not thank goodness.

SPEAKER_06

It could be. Oh man, is that um do you keep that on? You have to.

SPEAKER_03

He uh so he closed it out. It was it was great. It it's tough to do comedy in between huge music fans. Would you agree? I don't know if you've ever done something like that where you're like sandwiches.

SPEAKER_06

Music is brutal. I mean magicians. Yes. Anything where they're not there. People think it's gonna be a great match, usually not. Um, but also like just in that setting. I just love that Michael J. Fox is like obviously maybe a fan of comedy. Yeah. This is part of the fundraiser. That's huge.

SPEAKER_03

And uh They said he, the producer of everything told me his it was his idea to introduce comedy to it, not just to do music. Like he he loves stand-up.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I mean, he's a funny dude. Canadian, isn't he? Michael J. Do you have a uh I wonder why he landed on Michael J. Fox? Couldn't you never would have had the career if it was Mike Fox? Mikey F.

SPEAKER_03

Michael J.

SPEAKER_06

Michael J?

SPEAKER_03

Michael J.

SPEAKER_06

You could you got that going on too. You got uh, did he tell you to drop the Hughes and just go H? He said keeping it. Maggie Hapollo?

SPEAKER_03

Keep it. Um yeah, I have the the second name. I have the middle name, it's my maiden name. Just in case I get divorced, I can people will still remember me. I could keep all that happens. I could keep all my socials.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's the that's the key. So you were down in Nashville, and then um you've been bouncing around. Where else were you?

SPEAKER_03

Uh I was at the Helium Club in Indianapolis. Um I sold out a show there and then did a second show, almost filled almost filled the second show, and then um I was in Nashville all week, so I did I did a show with Kid Rock at the Ryman, Kid Rock Comedy Jam.

SPEAKER_06

Um What happened to the Ryman that Kid Rock is there? Um that used to be the center of music.

SPEAKER_03

Dolly Parton, Elvis, yeah. Um, it was me and like ten dudes, so I was happy to break it up a little bit. Um, I mean The Ryman is historic too.

SPEAKER_06

It was awesome. This is a heck of a month hairbag.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. This is the home of the Opry, right? The the Ryman Theater. I've been there in Nashville. It's a great place for comedy, too. The venue itself is like the acoustics, it works.

SPEAKER_03

It was awesome. Um, I did a quick set there, and then I I uh did uh closed out Zayn's that night with Dusty Slay, and then um I flew back to do the tonight show audition. Speaking of, uh or you have a late show shirt on, um, which went great. Five minute sets. I mean, we'll see what happens. There's like 20 of us on the audition.

SPEAKER_06

So that was at Zanies International, too. Busy, busy, love it. Hey guys, quick question. Are you washing your face with the same soap you wash your car with? Do you shower in the driveway too? It's time to step things up. That's why I like Tiege Hanley. It's a super simple skincare system made for guys. Cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate. It's all laid out so you don't have to think about it. Just a few minutes a day, and your skin actually looks better. Head to Tiege.com slash Pat for 40% off and a free gift. Start taking care of your face like an adult. That's Tiege.com slash Pat. I was at a the father-daughter dance. That was my weekend. And by the way, happy earth day to everybody. Do we acknowledge It was Earth Day last week?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, my daughter they planted Oh, it is? Oh, well.

SPEAKER_06

I thought it was already too, because they were doing projects at school, and they must have been getting ahead of it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they send you home, send the kids home with a lot of dirt. Just like dirt and some seeds and an envelope.

SPEAKER_06

I'm like, wasn't it a bigger deal like not too long ago? Earth Day? Now it's like and then just a day for Earth. All these other things, just get a week, uh a month.

SPEAKER_03

Right backed up to like hot dog day and bagels.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, so I had the uh the father-daughter dance, which um I don't know if that model really works anymore. No one is really like dancing with their daughter. It's awkward, it's not like something that you're dying to do, maybe. Maybe there's like a rebrand, father-daughter hangout, father-daughter, like go to the White Sox game. I was gonna say white socks game. Are we dressing up like we're going on a date and staring at each other from across the room, hoping that you know, yeah, what do you think? I was gonna say basically.

SPEAKER_03

What are the dad? Do the dads just kind of like mingle?

SPEAKER_06

The dads are out, they're drinking, and by the way, it was in a uh at a country club in a ballroom which I have been in at Odyssey. I've been to weddings there. And I went up to the bar and I ordered there there's drinks. You're getting drinks. I ordered a uh a cocktail, or I ordered a drink, and uh started walking away, and they're like, Sir, sir, that's eleven dollars. Cash bar. So that was the one drink I had. But you can't be drinking anyway. You gotta drive your kid daughter home. This is Odyssey's far, too.

SPEAKER_03

We had it in the gym. So we had far away.

SPEAKER_06

And it's it's pouring out when we left there, too.

SPEAKER_03

It's in like Tinley Park. No, ours was in the gym in eighth grade, and the dad's drink in the parking lot. They didn't have a bar.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Um and it's the moms that are coming up with this idea.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Right? They should have a dance, we'll get them flowers, we'll dress them up, we'll take a picture, a picture in front of the firewall. And then they send them off, and then the dads don't even know what to do. Right. Yeah, I think that it's gotta be.

SPEAKER_03

They should do a different event. I'm with you. I think uh well, so funny enough, my husband went to like a father-daughter dance with my daughter, she's only six, and he was shocked there was no alcohol at the St. Francis and Wilmette father-daughter dance. He said that there used to be, but they cut it off last year, which basically means some dad overdid it at the father-daughter dance, which is Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

These are the same schools that are getting you vertus trained on how to behave around in a school environment, and then they're like, Oh, and by the way, there's a uh there's a bar and dancing, and you gotta drive. Men and yeah, eighth grade girls dancing. I don't even know. But that was the weekend, and then a bunch of games like like everybody else, six games on Sunday through through two kids, two kids, six games. Um, they're playing my daughter's playing flag football, which is blowing up. I love it though. Flag football for girls is big now.

SPEAKER_03

I love it. Frankie loves it too.

SPEAKER_06

She just started, she's six.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's that's great. But she likes it better than that.

SPEAKER_06

She's like a wide receiver, she's coming off the end.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she's yeah, she's more of a more of a running back. Oh, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

That's what we have on our team. We were down, I was watching this game from a car because it was freezing out.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

We watched like the first half and they're down big. This girl went off, she's like Bo Jackson and Tech Mobile. This eighth grader. Her name's I'm just gonna say Neve. That's not gonna give her full name. Neeve. It was the Neve game. This girl, we had 26 points, she had 26 of and they were all running touchdowns. She she's quick as hell, and she has a spin move, and she's unstoppable. Rattled off 20, we were down 24 or 6. She she just won the game for us.

SPEAKER_03

Well, so I think uh when I watch my daughter play basketball, some of the girls can't dribble, so they do run around like it's flag, like it's almost like rugby, nobody's dribbling. So I think they're all pretty good at flag football just to be a little bit. You don't have to dribble. Um, no, I love it. We didn't have flag football growing up. We didn't have we didn't have lacrosse, we didn't have field hockey, we didn't have any of that stuff.

SPEAKER_06

Now it's getting huge, and now the uh into the high schools and uh yeah, lacrosse as well. That's what they're playing on at Macaulay. Macaulay has a big lacrosse field and uh nice turf. That's where she's had that's where you went to school. You gotta tell me what is uh what is this all girls high school environment gonna be like?

SPEAKER_03

I loved it. I think um girls at this age really w want to be around their their dads much? No. No, not really. Well when you're like paying for stuff, that's about it. Um quick trip to Sephora. But um what w was your question? What can she expect? I mean, I loved it. I think for confidence and you know being around all girls like is a lot less um you know anxiety ridden than having to go to school with boys who be honest, like that age group of boys are just immature, you know, spitballs and boogers and farts. So I think like going to a ca all girls.

SPEAKER_06

Wait, I saw this. Did you see this farting? Which I got I got some blowback from some teachers. They're like, why are you posting this? We need your support, the teachers. I'm like, I I not asking my kids to act like assholes at school, right? Be punks.

SPEAKER_03

But if that's like the worst thing he's done.

SPEAKER_06

But he said he wasn't him. Wasn't me, Dad. I didn't make it, I didn't make any fart sounds. But she wrote it right there on the on the check card. Farting sounds.

SPEAKER_03

I love that she wrote it farting and not like more proper word for it. Yeah. Um No, I think she I think Joe's gonna love it. I loved uh Macaulay.

SPEAKER_06

Um you ever get in trouble in high school? Do you have any scandals while you were there?

SPEAKER_03

Not really. I was like afraid of my parents and afraid of getting in trouble because I didn't want to not be able to play sports. So I was pretty good in high school. I mean a little like you know, stupid stuff, but nothing crazy.

SPEAKER_06

Were kids smoking?

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah. People smoked in between classes. It's a big campus, it's one of the biggest all-girl schools in the country. So you have to walk outside from it's almost like a small college campus. Um they're probably gonna be vaping now. I don't think anybody smokes. Um no, I loved it. I mean, I know that there's more competition, right? Like Marist is co-ed, so back then everybody went to Macaulay. So that's like there wasn't really any other options.

SPEAKER_06

Um Yeah, and they say that this is a big thing for like the girls don't want to speak up sometimes in the the class, but they're more likely to raise their hand in this environment. Yeah. I don't know if that's yeah, I'm sure it is true.

SPEAKER_03

It's it's a confidence builder. You're you're not competing with boys, you're not uncomfortable, you don't have to really worry about what you look like or dress like, you're just going to school to have fun, be around other girls. I mean, it's a s it's a strict school, like they're they don't mess around with, you know, you've got to wear the uniform, you can't well, I don't know if it's still the case. You it has to, you know, hit a certain part on your knee. Can't be wearing short skirts or anything like that.

SPEAKER_06

Um Yeah, they are strict. And I just gotta notice she's gonna be taking driver's ed next year, which scares the hell out of me. Although I did take her to the cemetery and let her like have a lot of things.

SPEAKER_03

Well, that's the way to learn.

SPEAKER_06

Right?

SPEAKER_03

Well, nowadays, like I like our boys in high school don't want to drive. They don't care to drive. I don't understand that either. I wanted to drive when I was like thirteen.

SPEAKER_06

Don't you want to go like Yeah, boys don't because they don't want to sit through driver's ed?

SPEAKER_03

They just don't it's not like a motivating I don't know.

SPEAKER_06

I I had a great driver's ed teacher, Mr. D, and there was a rumor that he was like a retired porn star. There's always like a a backstory. Well, back then, driver's editor.

SPEAKER_03

He did not take Virtus training.

SPEAKER_06

I had to go to Morgan Park High School. Where did you take it?

SPEAKER_03

So I have a good story about that. I did Skido.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, you did? Which is the one you had to pay for. Paid for that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the big bucks, my dad would say. Um and the guy, uh, it's like a uh it's it's like a private place you pay. Like back then it was like 500 bucks, which is a lot of money to take drivers ed. Um and the guy smoked the whole time. So you're on the road like doing your No, he had like a you know, Ford Taurus, and he literally smoked the whole time. He's like, You want one? I'm like, I'm good. I'm like going to basketball practice after this, and I'm gonna smell like smoke. Um but everyone else did the Morgan Park one. I remember that with the cones and the dry, you know, parking lot. This was like we drove around Oak Lawn, got smokes, and then went back to the place, and he's like, You're all set. So I'm glad I practiced in cemetery. Pretty much, yeah. It was like the express. Oh, no one found it. That's good. Drive-through driver's ed.

We're gonna find out all about him. I'm very thrilled to have him here. Let's welcome him in, huh? Have you worked with Adam Gilbert before? I have.

SPEAKER_03

Well, we've come on, Adam.

SPEAKER_06

Adam Gilbert, everyone.

SPEAKER_03

We're trying to hear.

SPEAKER_06

Let's go, Adam.

unknown

Hello, hello.

SPEAKER_06

Look at this entrance.

SPEAKER_02

We've got a live live audience.

SPEAKER_06

Perfect entrance. What's going on?

SPEAKER_02

How are you? I'm good. Good to see you again.

SPEAKER_05

Good, good to see you. Okay, when did we see it? Do you remember what year it was? Because I I I I'm trying to remember when we were here. Okay, so you said it was Laugh Factory.

SPEAKER_03

You you murdered. You buried everybody.

SPEAKER_05

Oh no, that couldn't be. Um Does that narrow it down at all? He's like, that could be any night. Nope. It had to be 2022. That was the last time I was burying everybody.

SPEAKER_03

It was uh I want to say maybe Zany's. Okay, Zany's, we'll say Zany's showcase. You were on like a Monday night.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, I kill on Mondays. That's the only day that really works. I think I'm good on Mondays. A lot of people don't like to go out on Mondays. Yep, I'm there Thursday. This will come out the day after, probably. I just I think it's gonna be a bloodbath. Because it wasn't a fucking Monday. Oh, sorry, is this a big one?

SPEAKER_06

Is there a night that you prefer? Do you like the school nights better?

SPEAKER_05

Uh I don't know. Who's your crowd? Who do you like? I I feel like the people who uh don't have children do go out on Mondays. Yes. And then that does seem like they're they're gonna be a little bit more like so I don't know. And then also in New York, I feel like on the weekends it's more touristy. Well, if you're in New York, you're probably getting up uh every night, every single night. I try to take one or two nights off a week. Yeah. But I don't know. Do you do you guys take time off ever? You take the night in to just chill?

SPEAKER_06

I take time off. Yeah, for sure. Yes, definitely. I mean, where I'm not getting on stage. I mean, I got kids, so I'm like, Yeah, yeah, I gotta be. But I'm always trying to think about it in some way. But you do get rusty when you get on a rhythm, like you feel rusty.

SPEAKER_03

We both went on like a spring break with our kids. Did you feel rusty after that? Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

My first show was in Fairfield, Connecticut, and I was a little bit slow. You both have kids. Yeah, we both have kids. That's crazy. How do you know? What about you, dude? I want to back up a little bit. I want to back up a little bit. I was like, this is your this we're new.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, I got a vasectomy. I'm not having any fucking kids. I might adopt a couple, but that's way that's future atoms probably.

SPEAKER_06

How old are you? 32. 32. Yeah, a lot of people your age are not procreating. That's right. Did you come close to it?

SPEAKER_02

You had a uh Yeah, but why'd you get a vasectomy? I just didn't want to deal with it. I'm thinking it would be a whole thing. There's easier ways. Like I think it was actually I missed the vasectomy.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I think Tom was gonna have the kid. And I was like, that would be such a problem right now for me. Yep, yep, beautiful baby. Love that kid, but yeah, I was like, nope, that's not that's not gonna happen. You're a better better uncle, better uh do you have siblings? Yes. How many? Yeah, I have three. Okay. So I'll probably be an unc. I'll probably go unkmo, dude. That would be pretty fun. And where are you from, Adam? Indiana.

SPEAKER_06

Indiana? What part? What part? Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, do you guys know Indiana? I mean, it's our backyard.

SPEAKER_06

We live on the south side of Chicago. We can throw a rock. 20 minutes.

SPEAKER_05

I don't think Indiana is your backyard. I think Indiana's the lot next to your house that is still being developed.

SPEAKER_03

Where do you think we get our fireworks? That is where do you get your guns? Get our walls of fireworks and gambling.

SPEAKER_05

Where do we get our meth? Yeah, we had yeah, dude. We have so many strip clubs in my hometown, dude. It's crazy. It's kind of a vibe. Really? Yeah, we had we had uh we had I I talked about this before, but we have uh two strip clubs like really close together, one that's showgirl one and one showgirl three. We don't know what happened in number two. Oh, really? I w I really don't know.

SPEAKER_06

Was it a family uh they took the family recipe open in the second place?

SPEAKER_05

I have no franchise there and then there's another one called Shangri La, maybe. That was Showgirl too. But yeah, a lot of strip clubs and churches where I'm from. Fort Wayne. In Fort Wayne.

SPEAKER_06

Fort Wayne, Indiana is a uh had an NBA team at one point. What? The Fort Wayne Pistons or uh the Detroit Pistons. That's where they came from.

SPEAKER_05

Did you tell you this when you were born there? No, nobody told me anything.

SPEAKER_06

Who's from Fort Wayne?

SPEAKER_05

Uh any uh uh Shelly Long from Shelly Long, yeah, yeah. And uh Jenna Fisher, I think, was born there, and then her family was like, no, and then took her to St. Louis. And Adam Gilbert. Yeah, yeah. How long did you live there for? Big three, dude. The home of Adam Gilbert. Uh I moved there when I was six from Indianapolis, and then uh was there for like 18 years until I was like 24. And then I came here.

SPEAKER_06

And you how old were you when you started stand-up?

SPEAKER_05

Uh I was 19.

SPEAKER_06

19? Wow. Holy cow. What was your uh how what what brought you to it?

SPEAKER_05

Uh when you're a teenager, everything is very socially motivated, I think. I and like, but it but you don't really have a concept of how the world works. So I generally was like, oh, I bet girls are like this. And of course, no, that didn't happen.

SPEAKER_03

But I ended up.

SPEAKER_06

But they liked that doing an vasectomy, and you couldn't get a ball.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they love that. They must have liked it enough that you had to cut off the resources.

SPEAKER_05

The resources?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know that just came out.

SPEAKER_05

Hold on. Well, so did the resources, folks. Sure. No, but I mean it was just very socially motivated. I had like friends who were getting into it, and we had like kind of a small scene in Fort Wayne, but I just like went on the road and was in college, so it was kind of easy to have a few days. Purdue, Fort Wayne. Used to be IPFW, but then my college union. Yep, yep, PFW. Yeah, I went to PFW, I studied psychology. Bunch of insulators. Is that what you studied? Yeah, yeah. You minored in insulating? I minored in insulating uh yeah, I went to community college for two years because my family was like, let's let's back out of the driveway. Let's get you slowly into college. As I was not a good student when I was like 18, 17. Um, but yeah, yeah, I finished college when I was like 24. Yeah, I was old. You were taking your time. I was like, what's up?

SPEAKER_06

Were you working in between here? Were you like a part-time student? Do you have a job?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I worked at Walmart. Oh, you did? Yeah, I went to Walmart and Macy's, and uh and then I did stand up in college.

SPEAKER_03

And then you moved here?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, when I was like 24.

SPEAKER_03

So where'd you live in Chicago?

SPEAKER_05

I lived in Logan Square. A few different places. I've moved every year when I was here.

SPEAKER_03

So Logan Square for They call it Logan now, by the way. Just Logan. Oh, it is just It's just Logan? And Wicker's Wicker Park, just Wicker. What? Yeah. They've shortened it all. Go ahead, sorry. Not when not when Gilbert. Is Lincoln Park Lincoln? LP. LP? They call it LP. Who calls it LP? Gen Z.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, well, Gen Z is not on this show.

SPEAKER_03

Logan is just Logan.

SPEAKER_05

This is Sears Tower and it's Lincoln Park. And it's Boys Town, all right.

SPEAKER_03

That's right.

SPEAKER_05

Simon King, 76!

SPEAKER_02

That's right.

SPEAKER_05

Um, but no, I lived in Logan, uh, Avondale, Logan, and then um uh the best neighborhood to move to after a breakup, Lakeview. Hell yeah. Why do you say that? Boom. A lot of girls around? I don't know. It's just a good place to kind of uh reflect on your life at night. You know, and you're like, what kind of man am I gonna be now that she's not here? And it's great to like look on the water and have those thoughts wash over you. Oh, you had a nice view then. You're like a balcony lake view. But you were like East Lake View. I was in Boys Town. So divert I was south of that. I was kind of near LP. Okay. Park for a gen for for the for the Gen Z listeners of the Pat McGan show. The girls with the type.

SPEAKER_06

I cross every demo here, Adam.

SPEAKER_05

I don't know where you're trying to paint, put me in the non-binary Gen Z just like Pat McGan show's on everybody. Turn the TV at the coffee shop to the Pat McGan show. And I lived on the diversity brown line. Uh so like the border of Lincoln Park and uh Lakeview. And it was just so that that was like my favorite apartment. I lived with like three other comics, and uh it was just like the landlord was kind of giving us like a really good deal. So it's like 600 bucks a month. Oh, that's amazing. And you could just like yeah, walk around Lakeview. It was so pretty. That's awesome. Oh, I love that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's close to the lake, close to Wrigley. Three comics.

SPEAKER_05

That place must have been a mess. Uh yeah, was there a lot of things? Yeah, there was the one, it was a famous comic apartment that like uh because it was it was like upstairs was like pretty like Was the apartment more famous than the comics? The apartment was I should say let me back that up. It was infamous. It was infamous. Because there was a room that uh in the basement that had no window. It had none. It had no windows. I don't know if it really got good AC. And uh I remember I think it was Greg Kennedy uh lived there, and he he could only stand it for like six months. It it was like driving him insane. Uh Jeff Asmus used to live in that room, and I we don't know how he certainly. Yeah, very, very funny guy. Something went on down there.

SPEAKER_03

That was like the breakup room. It was like whoever was going through a breakup was in the dark. I I was upstairs. I hit the window. Okay, yeah, you were looking out at the water.

SPEAKER_04

Tease Handley has changed my life. My skin has been amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America. When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest. We know you're here for pictures. I thought you were a model.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you guys, he's glowing. In fact, Ape Burgati was like, your skin's awesome.

SPEAKER_01

Just like I look forward to like, oh, I'm washing my face before I go to sleep. I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said, I'm 50. And everyone goes, What? T Sh Hanley.

SPEAKER_05

It's the way we face the day. You know what I really miss was those Chicago porches. You know that back porch. Do you guys have one of those?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

That was a really good.

SPEAKER_06

You're talking about like on a three-flat on a brownstone.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, when you're like sitting, yeah, it's like wood, and you just sit there and then there's like steps to their to uh your neighbors' porch and everything. Yeah, back patio. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that was really that that was a good place to reflect and smoke smoke SIGs, dude. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_06

You miss Chicago, don't you?

SPEAKER_05

I do. You can't live here and not miss it. I I love New York, like the opportunities are great, and it's also like you get so used to the stimulus, you know, because it's just something happening every day. It's like uh it's like when you get addicted to your phone. It's like there's just so much. Yeah, you know, you just can't fucking stop. So I don't think I can ever move back, but I do miss it here, and I try to come as much as I can.

SPEAKER_06

When you say you're addicted to your phone, yeah, what are you on most what apps are you on the most?

SPEAKER_05

Grinder. No, folks. Uh no, no, no. Folks, T Sh Hanley, everybody. Um uh Tanley, T Shandley, we love those jokes. Uh no, uh, it was um. Anything motion related. No, dude, I'm I'm just on it. You have a skincare routine while we're on T Sh Hanley? Well, I'm trying to get a better one because I got this red stuff on my nose. If any viewers get a close-up on these, get a close-up of the thing on the most detailed. What's wrong with your nose? Uh yeah, I got this, I think it's rosacea or something like that. I don't know. Did you drink? No.

SPEAKER_06

No?

SPEAKER_05

No. I have that's see that that makes me feel even worse about it. Like, are you are you a full-blown drunk? Is that why your face looks so red? I don't care.

SPEAKER_06

Well, you don't see cocaine. You look good. That's why you have such a young audience. Do you have a uh you know it, man. Do you have a uh do you have any vices other than Oh, I just smoke marijuana. Do you? Yeah. And you prefer to smoke it? You don't gummy vape? You smoke the actual grass.

SPEAKER_05

You prefer to smoke it, you don't like to uh ingest it or uh do it in any other ways.

SPEAKER_02

I do like your Mary Jane.

SPEAKER_05

How do I like my Mary Jane? You sound like it's like the detective at the station. Yeah. I I can do it. How do you like your Mary Jane? I like smoking it like a like uh anything. Yeah. I like an edible though. Edibles are kind of nice. What about you?

SPEAKER_03

Uh whoa, right back to me. Um I I d THC's never been my friend. It's not it's not in the p in the in the docket.

SPEAKER_06

But you have had what what's your your go-to? If you want to try and maybe chill, get creative. Um Do you ever take any?

SPEAKER_03

I like mushroom gummies, even though they're not legal. Yeah, mushrooms are sick.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, I'm glad you said that because I wanted you to say so I could say that you gave me some.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I did.

unknown

Yeah?

SPEAKER_06

What are you like on mushrooms? You gave me some. She tried to because I would just take a gummy. Yeah. But these uh mushroom gummies were it was a candy bar, it was chocolate. I gave you the chocolates to come in the city. They're like over the counter, right? Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, it's not like anything illegal. It's not like the real mushrooms where you're tripping out or anything. But I didn't know I have never have. I have never tripped.

SPEAKER_04

You it would be really funny.

SPEAKER_06

Me and you?

SPEAKER_05

No, just I just want to see you just be like, yeah, it's like uh it's like time's some sort of illusion. Well, it's like currency doesn't really make any sense if you think about it there, Pa. Is that me? Yeah. And you and mushrooms.

SPEAKER_00

I love that.

SPEAKER_05

Why why does Midway need to be uh less quality airport? We're all people.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. He's like, could we land in a driveway?

SPEAKER_06

But anyway, these things, I didn't find that they were like that mind-altering or that like it's it's it's like a very small stimulant.

SPEAKER_03

THC makes me like tired, a little anxious. Like I think I need like more life insurance.

SPEAKER_06

Like it's never been even in college, I just it's not like the layers of Catholic guilt-ish. I'm telling you, there's like a armor there. Yeah. That is like suffocating.

SPEAKER_03

Marijuana was like the worst thing anyone could be doing growing up. So I I and not that that's what not why. I just, yeah, it doesn't, it's not an upper for me. It's like a sort of it, but the mushrooms I love. It's like a it's a little bit of like a stimulant energy. I think I I'm more creative, I think.

SPEAKER_05

That's so interesting that it's like a do you have a similar thing with the Catholic guilt like growing up with that? Do you think that affects certain things?

SPEAKER_06

Oh, I think it plays into uh most things, a lot of things.

SPEAKER_05

I grew up evangelical, and when you Alright, that's it for Adam. Yeah. When you when you stop that, I feel like it's so much easier to go, oh, we were the bad guys. And you just completely like disregard it, I feel like.

SPEAKER_06

So that's but I feel like when you I'm still paying tuition for Catholic schools, so I can't give up on it. That's interesting. So it like it's a good thing. And we used to take a word from our sponsor, Catholic charities.

SPEAKER_05

That's so interesting. It like stays with you longer. I think it's a Catholic kind of thing. Because mine I'm like, oh god, yeah, I'm not gonna. I grew up going to a mega church. I was like, oh, that was that was wrong. Yeah, you guys like it's more. Well, we've talked about this.

SPEAKER_03

Like, I I'm I say I'm like Catholic light. Like I'm just at this point, I'm invested. Like, I'm not gonna go join another like I've had friends leave the Catholic Church and they go to like these smaller They're not gonna find anything more fun. Yeah, they're like, You should go, you should come see like our pastor Samantha. And I'm like, I'm all set. Like, I I already have status in the church. I'm not gonna like start over anywhere else and be like bore in group five.

SPEAKER_06

It's based in the basin kindness and like fun, yeah, social.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's why there's dads drinking at father-daughter dance. Why are the dads is there a mother-son dance? There is.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, there is.

SPEAKER_03

It's not as much of a big deal, though.

SPEAKER_06

They don't do them as often, and at our school there isn't. They actually go to the White Sox game, the mother-son white socks game. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Oh man. What's going on? They're more progressive on the mother-son side.

SPEAKER_05

The girls have to dance with babies and girls. Yeah. The kids get to go to a socks game. Yeah. That's so sick. Dude's rock, man.

SPEAKER_06

And what I want to talk about beyond stand-up. Are you doing, are you getting into some other stuff? Are you doing uh going on auditions?

SPEAKER_05

Are you trying to do stuff outside of stand up? I did a self-tape the other day. Manager said, natural. How about that?

SPEAKER_06

Oh, there you go. How about that?

SPEAKER_05

Sounds awesome.

SPEAKER_06

What was the what was it for?

SPEAKER_05

Uh, it was for something I'm not gonna get because in the uh in the thing it says, wear a tight t-shirt that shows your arms. And my manager, I think, I think she's like trying to put me in for like these hot guy roles. And the thing is, it's usually other hot guys and usually hotter, stronger men. And so I think I'm not gonna get it. But how about that? Natural. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like you're a natural?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, like you said. But I think the role was written for a jack man.

SPEAKER_03

Did it say it in there? That's kind of an odd. I I I don't do auditions or anything like that or self-tapes, I don't know what that it was in the description. It had a vibe on the other. So did you wear a tight what were you wearing? Were you wearing wearing?

SPEAKER_05

I I wore like a just a black t-shirt. Okay. I I looked at my arms and they looked like I'm stringy. I'm a stringy boy.

SPEAKER_06

A lot of guys already trust Tiege Hanley. They've shipped over three million boxes and have more than 24,000 reviews, averaging 4.7 stars. In fact, 91% of customers say they'd recommend it to a friend. People only talk like that when a product works. If you're ready to upgrade your routine, check out Tiege Hanley and face the day with confidence. Head to Tiege.com slash Pat for 40% off and a free gift. That's Tiege.com slash Pat. Are you careful about what you wear when you go on stage? Do you have like a uh I used to have a I don't really wear short sleeves on stage.

SPEAKER_05

That's interesting. I I I kind of want to wear I get too sweaty. I'm sweating right now. I noticed. I damn it. They notice everything, don't you? No, you can't really. Wait, you're drinking, you're sweating over there.

SPEAKER_02

Your nose is red. I can't tell. Hey, hey, call back. Hey.

SPEAKER_06

How about that? So the primary focus is stand-up.

SPEAKER_05

I just get sweaty when I'm on stage. So we're like, I I feel like when I do long sets, I don't wear sweaters anymore.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I used to when I was younger. I saw some of your clips on online, dude. Thanks for watching. Funny stuff. And you guys gotta check Adam out on uh Instagram. You got some great clips on that. You're way too nice. So what are you talking about mostly in your act these days? Because you're gonna be at Zany's this week. You're gonna be uh where Zany's Old Town?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, Zainie's Old Town, baby. Um, yeah, I just like I try to mix it up as much as possible. So they'll they'll they'll be surprised. But also they'll they'll see some they'll see a lot of it that's already been released.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

When I did my seller audition, I sent in my don't tell, and uh uh the booker was like, Oh, I loved your don't tell. And I was like, Well, you're about to see it again.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, right? Isn't that true?

SPEAKER_06

So that was your because this is you're talking about auditioning at the comedy cellar in New York City. This is like the club in the country. Yeah, yeah. And they have a process to get past to be a regular at the club. So what is the process?

SPEAKER_05

You have two vouches, and that part is harder than you think.

SPEAKER_06

You gotta get two comics.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, because everybody's really scared. So they're like, uh, I don't know if I can vouch at all. So who were your who are Christo Stefano and Mark Norman? Or not Mark Norman, um uh Mike Roland. God damn it. You can see how I mixed that up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mike Roland and uh Christa Stefano. Oh, that's nice. So it was so they they s I sent in my tape of my don't tell and uh said, Hey, these guys vouch for me, blah blah blah. And then I did a five-minute audition, more scared than anything I've done. What time of day, what what night of the week? Friday at seven.

SPEAKER_03

So I think they wanted to pretty slot and it's at a live show, like you're just jumping on, it's a they tell the audience after you get off.

SPEAKER_05

They're like, that was his first set here. And it keeps them clapping, and then the next person goes on.

SPEAKER_06

Who'd you follow?

SPEAKER_05

Uh I followed um let's see, the host, John Lester. Uh he hosts there all the time, he's amazing. And then uh Gina Brian, she did great. Oh yeah. Uh opening up the show, and then it was me. And then like a week and no, like two weeks later, uh, after maybe doing like three or four spots there, I had to follow Burr. And that was goddamn terrifying. That's cool though. But honestly, found this out, and I I wonder if you guys can really like you follow somebody bigger and you're like all scared about it, it's always fine. Like, you're not really gonna get buried after a certain point.

SPEAKER_06

Well, you're always following someone bigger.

SPEAKER_05

That was for the Gen Z. Oh my god. I just thought of you being on Kill Tony. Oh there, Sha Flying Black behind me. How about that? Oh my god. Fellowship.

SPEAKER_06

I might not walk out of there alive.

SPEAKER_05

Hey there, Kill Tony. Uh there's Kill Tony right there. How about him?

SPEAKER_06

He's kind of getting it.

SPEAKER_05

He's kind of a chilling cat.

SPEAKER_06

Kind of a fur to a chill cat. I would love to do that. Do you have a connect? Have you done it?

SPEAKER_05

No, God.

SPEAKER_06

Would you? Would you walk in there? No, no, no, no. Good for you, bud.

SPEAKER_05

I'm too, I'm, I'm too, no. What are you? Sucks. I'm too woke. Come on. I'm too woke to do Tony's show. You got Cheeto elected again, you son of a bitch. Sandy's old town this Thursday. No, uh, no, it's just it just seems like a it just seems gimmicky. It seems very like wrestling-y. Yeah, movie.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I don't like that shit. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Good for you. You gotta stand up for something. So who do you have? Your uh you you have your focus on stand-up, your touring, you got um zany's, and you're also doing this is nice, charitable work too, and a good friend of ours, Pat Tomasulo, yeah, who does laugh your face off. They got the big fundraiser this Saturday at Navy Pierre.

SPEAKER_02

Wow, that's gonna be awesome. That's gonna be really fun.

SPEAKER_05

I'm looking forward to working with I mean, the people on the lineup are really, really good. Kyle Ayers is hilarious. So funny. Oh, I love Kyle.

SPEAKER_06

He's a funny dude. I haven't seen him for a while.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and Pat's great too. Do you know have you met Tomasulo?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we worked together ages and ages and ages ago.

SPEAKER_05

But yeah, very, very funny and very, very nice guy.

SPEAKER_03

He's not super funny, but he's a good dude. Um his wife is awesome, though. Amy's amazing, so give her a big hug. But it's gonna that's a fun day.

SPEAKER_06

How about it? They are both great and uh looking forward to it.

SPEAKER_03

There's a lot of people, it's it's it's a big event. It'll be fun. Yeah, yeah, it's it's should be for a good cause. Because you're in town all week.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah. I always try to take a little chance to you know, any chance I get. I I've been here like three times this year already. But probably gonna be mostly in New York for the rest of the year.

SPEAKER_06

But I try to come a few times a year at least. Well, you got the cellar pass, that's a game changer. Are you working in any other clubs in New York?

SPEAKER_05

Uh yeah, sometimes work uh New York Comedy Club, sometimes uh uh Highline, sometimes the stand, uh you know, different ones. I tried Westside Comedy Club the other night.

SPEAKER_03

What's your favorite place to perform in New York? Obviously the cellar is like you know legendary, but like aside from that, what's of all those you just mentioned? I'm just curious. I've only performed in New York a few times.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Um New York Comedy Club on 4th Street is really fun. Yeah, I've done that one. Yeah. You done that one? That's the first one. Yeah, that one's really good. And then have you ever done this week uh. Have you ever done Gotham? Uh I've done that a couple times. That was the That's always fun. I like that room. I love Gotham. Yeah, that was really cool. And then I did um, I like Chelsea Music Hall a lot. That one was really cool. I think the stand is opening another location there. And then uh Bell House. When Bell House in Brooklyn is packed. It's really, really, really, really fun.

SPEAKER_03

So is your life in New York as far as the comic goes, like if you're not doing something on the road, are you just trying to get up as much as you can at all these places?

SPEAKER_05

Is that yeah. Yeah, I mean like yeah, just try to do I mean I feel like the seller is uh lucky, but you know, like it's ups and downs, of course, but like the last few weeks I was at the seller, like you know, I had like 12 spots one week the other week. Oh, and also this club Top Secret. In London, they have a new uh location in New York. Cool. And so they give you spots, and those are pretty fun to so yeah, you can see jumping on the subway and doing the whole bouncing around. Oh, yeah, subway and Ubers now. That's the life, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a good time. Running around, man, running around. But it's it's fun, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_06

It's fun. I was in a great place. I was in Madison this past weekend. Oh, Comedy State? Uh Barrymore Theater. No, small theater in town. Different part of Madison because Comedy Club on State is awesome. Love the club, love that part of town on State Street. Yeah. This was a little different part of town, which was uh very cool. So love that people came out to Madison. Uh, and I'm in Toledo this weekend. Great Toledo? That's on the way to Fort Wayne. Well, Fort Wayne's on the way there. I'm gonna stop through your town, dude.

SPEAKER_05

It was like an hour drive, so that was like a quick open mic to go do. What was uh what are you doing in Toledo now? The funny bone. Oh, great, great, great. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nice, man. It's gonna be good.

SPEAKER_06

SPEAKER_03

Did you say you drive through Fort Wayne to get to Toledo?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, don't you? Right yeah, right through there. Are you gonna go to number one or number three? I'm gonna go to uh I'm gonna go to Shangri-La. Shangri-La.

SPEAKER_03

It sounds more fancy. It really does. Shangri. It's like cover charge there. Slightly more educated performers.

SPEAKER_05

It's kind of funny because like Indiana is so conservative, it's kind of immaculate funny to imagine like a MAGA guy going to Shangri-La. Right.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, when you said that about Fort Wayne, I was surprised that Indiana would have that, the strip club scene.

SPEAKER_05

We're gonna go to Shangri-La. We're gonna pray owl.

SPEAKER_03

But you can't buy booze on Sundays. That's what I've heard about.

SPEAKER_05

It's crazy. Yeah. No, I think they did end that. I think, but it was like after I moved. Like it it was on the books for at least like 35 years or 40 years. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Did you know that? You can't buy well you uh until recently you could not buy alcohol. Yeah. Oh oh no. Until noon.

SPEAKER_06

Until noon.

SPEAKER_03

It used to be not at all. And now it's till noon. Yeah, it's so weird. Because they don't want you.

SPEAKER_06

But when do they cut you off the night before? It's at midnight? That's a good question.

SPEAKER_05

Nothing stays open that late. No, there are some 3 a.m. bars, which I used to think was the latest. And then Chicago is like, oh, we have 5 a.m. bars. Sure. Jesus Christ. Yeah, you can go all night here. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

unknown

Damn it.

SPEAKER_06

But you don't drink.

SPEAKER_05

No.

SPEAKER_06

But I did when I was here. This place was funny. That's when you said you were burying everyone. I think that's right when I quit.

SPEAKER_05

Those two don't go together.

SPEAKER_06

Well, you gotta get back to Fort Wayne, do a homecoming show.

SPEAKER_05

I am. I'm doing that in May. Oh, are you really? Yeah, I'm doing Summit City. Oh, okay. So we'll see how that goes. Before it's the Sunday before Memorial Day. So hoping we can sell it out, but who knows?

SPEAKER_06

Dude, I'm sure you will. I really appreciate you coming in here. It is great to meet you in person. I've seen you all over Instagram. And uh enjoy Zanies. Have fun uh at Navy Pier. That's a that's a room. Have you done the Grand Ballroom in Navy Pier? That is a that's so it's big.

SPEAKER_03

I did it for a corporate. It's beautiful. It's probably the best view in the city. It's like the very tip of the piers. You're is that what you're talking about?

SPEAKER_06

You'll get all the way at the end.

SPEAKER_05
