Chicago comedian Kevin Bozeman joins Pat McGann to explain why he thinks LeBron James is the better all-around player but Kobe Bryant remains the tougher one-on-one matchup — and why raising an 8-year-old with ADHD in a "broken" healthcare system has forced him to become an accidental expert on the medical system's backlogs.

This week on The Pat McGann Show, Pat welcomes back Chicago comedian Kevin Bozeman for a wide-ranging, funny, and personal conversation. Kevin is a stand-up comedian who has spent years performing everywhere from Chicago comedy clubs to cruise ships and international stages, and he's known among friends as one of the city's most well-rounded sports minds.

What does this episode answer? Pat: All right, we're back again — 49ers, here we are. We're gathered in the Tiege Hanley studios on the west side of Chicago, and for the first time since episode seven, Kevin Bozeman is joining us. Man, it's been a minute.

Kevin: That's crazy — "for the first time"? I was on here for the first episode!

Pat: Seven times seven is 49.

Kevin: So then, math wizard, when would I be on next?

Pat: Then we'd be at... 49 times seven.

Kevin: Seven to the third power.

Pat: Yeah — seven cubed.

Pat: So we're still going at that point, there might be bigger issues.

Kevin: I'm gonna have so much to talk about in 2029. So — stay tuned.

Pat: Hopefully the world's still here.

Kevin: I know, right?

[1:40] Summer Travel — Rome, Barcelona, No A/C

Pat: You've been seeing quite a bit lately — I know you've been doing some traveling on the seas.

Kevin: Yeah, traveling the seven seas. I get the chance in the summer because comedy club season is always slower across the board, so I travel. I took the family — we did Rome, we did France, Italy, and I've got Iceland and Norway and London coming up.

Pat: You went to Rome with the whole family?

Kevin: It started in Barcelona. Yeah, working — I don't do vacations where I'm not working. That's bad parenting, honestly. Who wants just family time with no purpose? No — I'm working, so I can help offset the cost. And to get away.

Pat: What was the cruise — Spain?

Kevin: It started in Barcelona, which was great. The only thing is — Barcelona is like 2,000 years old, no air conditioning. You'd think they'd have figured that out by now. And they don't like to give you ice. If you ask for ice, they'll give you one cube and you're like, no, I need ice. They keep "forgetting" — how do you forget it's 120 degrees out?

Pat: They've got a big heatwave right now.

Kevin: It's crazy — we tried to eat inside and they were like, no, you're better off outside, because there's no air conditioning in here either.

Pat: Do you want to be breathing wildfire smoke outside, though?

Kevin: It was a lose-lose situation. But it's great — traveling.

Pat: Who's on these cruises — English-speaking people?

Kevin: Yeah, I can only do the English-speaking ones. There are people from other countries too, and they're like, "we tried to understand you, but—"

Pat: They still come to the shows, though?

Kevin: They still come, but we don't get all the references. They're like, "what's a CPAP?"

Pat: [laughs]

Kevin: They still come to the shows, I mean, it's — I'll be back on the club circuit once September hits. Full clubs.

[4:30] Chicago Staycations

Pat: I just did a staycation — didn't go anywhere, brought my kids down to my parents' near Old Town. Set up shop for a couple days.

Kevin: That's the move. That's what we used to do for Christmas — kids don't appreciate anything you give them, so we'd go into the city on Christmas Eve. Basically free reign because nobody's downtown. You just find a couple of spots that are open.

Pat: Like the Chinese restaurant at the end of A Christmas Story.

Kevin: Dude, we found a Chinese restaurant that also served pizza and sushi — a do-it-all spot. Right there by the hotel downtown. Get up, have Christmas brunch, there's a piano player, come home, keep it easy. We did that for three or four years. Staycations are great — you forget how great they are.

Pat: We did a river tour on a boat, walked the Riverwalk, walked down Michigan Avenue. Huge line in front of the Nutella store, and my kids were like, "are we going to get some Nutella?" I said sure — and then I saw the line went around the block.

[6:10] The Sur La Table Culinary Camp

Pat: One of the reasons we did the staycation — I got my son a culinary camp experience for his birthday, at Sur La Table.

Kevin: Where's that?

Pat: 900 North Michigan. They teach a world tour of cuisine — one day Mediterranean, one day Italian, one day Mexican street food.

Kevin: So you go several different days?

Pat: Every day for a couple hours, and you leave with a full meal each time. He was making kimchi pancakes — legit stuff. The age group was probably 12 to 16. One of the dads in the class turned out to be Wes Unseld's son.

[7:00] The Wes Unseld Full-Circle Story

Kevin: Wes Unseld?

Pat: Wes Unseld's son — Wes Unseld, the Hall of Famer, Washington Bullets.

Kevin: Wizards, Wizards — not the Bullets anymore.

Pat: Right, it was the Bullets back when Wes Unseld played — they were pressured into changing the name because "Bullets" didn't sit well given the city's history with gun violence, so now it's just the Wizards. But yeah — Wes Unseld Jr. is on the Chicago Bulls coaching staff now, an assistant coach.

Kevin: The junior.

Pat: Right — and the third guy in his cooking class was in on it too. It was pretty funny because the kids had never heard of Wes Unseld — that's my dad's era. So we pulled up highlights to show them he was a legit Hall of Famer. Then, fast forward two days, we're watching a movie I really want to recommend — have you seen Shooting Stars?

[8:15] Shooting Stars (the LeBron James Movie)

Kevin: I have not.

Pat: It's about LeBron James.

Kevin: Because we don't talk about him enough. [laughs] I'm a LeBron fan — until you tell me he's the GOAT. Other than that, everything he's done is off the charts. If you took LeBron out of the picture, what do we even have right now in terms of legacy? A 42-year-old guy still talked about like that — say what you want, he's all the things. I hadn't heard of Shooting Stars though. Please continue.

Pat: It's about his adolescence — growing up, playing at the Salvation Army all the way to winning his third high school state championship. It's good. The kid from Stranger Things is in it — Caleb McLaughlin. He plays Dru Joyce.

Kevin: Oh, it's not a documentary — it's a real movie.

Pat: Yeah. And he's surrounded by greatness — these kids who played together growing up. Dru Joyce is now the head coach at Duquesne.

Kevin: Oh, okay.

[9:50] LeBron's High School Suspension — The Wes Unseld Jersey

Pat: They played together growing up, and there's a scene — I'm watching this with my son Elliott — where LeBron gets suspended his senior year at [St. Vincent–St. Mary] because he accepted a gift. Some guy runs up to him and says, "I'm a big fan, I want to give you this" — hands him a signed jersey worth about $1,800, which was more than he was allowed to accept. So he got suspended.

Kevin: Oh my God.

Pat: Set him up — they dirtied him.

Kevin: Right.

Pat: How do people even find out?

Kevin: Right.

Pat: So guess whose jersey it was — Wes Unseld's.

Kevin: Oh — full circle!

Pat: My son Elliott's like, "wait, rewind that — who is that?"

Kevin: You've gotta have streamers popping off when it comes full circle like that.

[11:15] The Odyssey, CVS, and Growing Up on the South Side

Pat: Okay — The Odyssey, did you read it?

Kevin: I did not read it. You can't really spoil it, though — it's a known story, right?

Pat: Right, you can't really spoil it.

Kevin: I don't know, apparently everybody read it in high school — shoutout to Chicago Vocational for not requiring that from us.

Pat: What was the required reading, then?

Kevin: Honestly, I don't even remember what it was.

Pat: Did you drive past that school — off the Skyway? It's massive.

Kevin: Dick Butkus, Juwan Howard, Chris Zorich — I went there too. It was a big school. My freshman class was huge — I think there were 1,800 freshmen my year. It's a giant industrial building; they painted it pink to calm people down. If you drive the Skyway and see a big pink building, that's it.

Pat: The toll's like nine bucks now or something.

Kevin: I don't even know — I'm all suburban now, I don't do the Skyway. Anyway — what were we talking about? Oh right, the curriculum at CVS. It was survival, basically — you took your basic classes, but then you could pick a vocation: automotive, electronics...

Pat: I don't see "comedian" on that list.

Kevin: I don't see comedian on there at all. I feel like you guys are distracting me from my comedic nature — oppressing it, even. But yeah — it wasn't personalized like schools are now.

[14:15] Chicago Public Schools

Kevin: When you pack a bunch of kids into one building like that, there's no room for individual growth — it's survival. The people who made it out had to have a lot of self-motivation. I don't know if it's still like that, but more than likely, yes — Chicago Public Schools has never ranked high, has it?

Pat: The only ones I really know about are the ones my sister teaches at — those are doing all right.

Kevin: Yeah, whatever — it's great times, though. High school was high school.

Pat: Were you a class clown back then?

Kevin: Not really a class clown — I always had the witty thing to say on the spot, but I wasn't the one driving teachers insane. My parents wouldn't have allowed that. My brother was a police officer, my dad was a butcher, and my mother managed... was it Candlestick? [VERIFY: exact name/location of this restaurant/business is unclear in the recording]

Kevin: That's super random, I know.

Pat: That's what was going on.

Kevin: My mother actually ran a restaurant — Queen of the Sea, at 87th and Stony Island. It was a soul food place that, oddly, had no seafood. Straight-up buffet. Mark Aguirre used to stop by. [16:20] The Museums — MSI and the Field Museum

Pat: I was in Hyde Park yesterday — my daughter was at the Museum of Science and Industry with my sister.

Kevin: I did a one-year membership there for my son. There was a Spider-Man exhibit — I thought he'd love it, but he only knows the Disney Spidey and His Amazing Friends version, so it didn't quite land.

Pat: They used to get things like the King Tut exhibit to pull people in.

Kevin: They still have all that good stuff at the Field Museum.

Pat: I love that museum.

Kevin: Top tier. I went probably four times, but didn't renew the membership.

Pat: Hyde Park's so underrated — people just drive by the University of Chicago without realizing how beautiful it is.

[17:50] The Obama Presidential Center

Kevin: And now with the Obama Presidential Center there, it's even more of a draw. I went to the grand opening speeches — sat in the yard and watched Obama, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen. It was great.

Pat: Was that in December or January?

Pat: My family's planning to go check it out — it looks awesome. Looks futuristic, almost like something out of Star Wars.

Kevin: I think you're thinking of the Avengers, honestly — I don't really watch that stuff.

Pat: I don't dig into that at all either. I don't know how people have the time.

[18:55] Savannah Bananas, Big3, and the Harlem Globetrotters

Pat: They sold out like three games here — what's your take on the Savannah Bananas?

Kevin: I'm just an outsider on this one — I barely have time to follow the White Sox.

Pat: It's the new-age Harlem Globetrotters, some would say.

Kevin: I'm not buying that — I like the actual Globetrotters. Where do you think this generation would land if we took them to see the real Harlem Globetrotters right now?

Pat: I think they'd love it.

Kevin: No way — they'd be bored out of their minds, wondering why everyone's whistling and where the ball even is.

Pat: Whereas the Savannah Bananas — it's less scripted, but still kind of fake, right?

Kevin: It's baseball, but with a twist — do a flip before you catch the ball, you get bonus outs, that kind of thing.

Pat: Have you seen them live?

Kevin: No — I appreciate it, but I'm not going to watch grown men in bright yellow doing cartwheels. Kerry Wood pitched in one of their games — I saw that. I'm good without seeing more. Same with Ice Cube's Big3 league — never watched it.

Pat: I don't really watch it either, but I'd go.

Kevin: I'd probably go too, honestly.

[21:30] Patrick Kane's Return to the Blackhawks

Pat: Patrick Kane is back on the Blackhawks — that was huge.

Kevin: I was just talking about that. People said that bridge was burned, given how the Blackhawks handled things with him. But it'd be nice — they haven't been relevant in a while.

Pat: Can you remember a better player making a Chicago return, other than Michael Jordan? I think Kane's still got a couple good years left.

Kevin: He's 37, though, so the runway's short. Crazy to think he signed with Chicago back in like '09 or so. [VERIFY: exact year Kane originally signed with Chicago referenced in dialogue]

Pat: Kind of like Jordan being on the Wizards.

Kevin: Right — every so often he'd remind people what he could do, but he never really talked about it. Now, this is probably the highest-profile return like that — I saw a ranking of the top overall picks in hockey over the last 30 years, and Kane was around number six.

[23:30] Sports Betting Everywhere

Pat: Have you noticed the oversaturation of gambling ads across sports broadcasts? I was watching the White Sox on Saturday and they had live over/unders on strikeouts for the starting pitcher.

Kevin: Yeah, now it's first-five-innings bets, single-inning bets — live betting is nonstop. When I go to an actual game, I'm live betting the whole time. Same thing on football Sundays.

Pat: So all the old-school bookies have basically been cut out?

Kevin: Well, it's still illegal in some states, so it depends. Same as marijuana in that way — legal in some places, not others.

Pat: And in the states where it is legal, it's everywhere.

Kevin: There's stuff now that isn't even technically called gambling — like Polymarket, betting on real-world events. The game has changed, but I'm still mostly DraftKings, FanDuel.

[26:25] Health Tangent — Is Salad Even Worth It?

Pat: Speaking of staying healthy — hopefully you avoid measles, explosive diarrhea, Ebola, whatever's floating around out there.

Kevin: You've gotta trust your own nervous system, trust your ability to fight things off — why rely on medicine that's been developed and refined for decades when you can just trust it'll work out? [laughs]

Pat: Do you feel like there's a growing gap in the comedy scene around how seriously people take some of this health stuff?

Kevin: If there's one food that could disappear entirely, it's salad. It's the most boring thing, and it only gets good once you make it unhealthy — bacon, eggs, dressing, cheese, croutons — at that point just get a cheeseburger.

[27:25] Wisconsin Tornado and Cheese Curds

Pat: We had a tornado up in Wisconsin — Appleton got hit pretty hard.

Pat: I always picture him talking a certain way.

Kevin: [in a bit] "About to make myself disappear..."

Kevin: I started in Wisconsin — went to UW-Whitewater, then lived in Madison for a while after college. It's about two hours door-to-door from downtown Chicago to downtown Milwaukee, more like an hour fifteen. Indianapolis and Grand Rapids are both about three hours. Chicago's a real hub — good for a day trip getaway.

[28:55] Parenting Across Different Ages

Pat: We've both got our sons with us today — like a "bring your kid to work" day.

Kevin: Right, and you can trust them with their devices.

Pat: You literally can — just hand them the device.

Kevin: My younger son is eight now — feels like I just picked him up, and now he's eight. My older two are 23 and 21 — one just graduated from University of Illinois in December and works as a recruiter in Wheaton.

Pat: You recruit people to read the Bible?

Kevin: [laughs] I'd never let him in my house if that's what he did — that's not how we live. My other son is a finance major [VERIFY: exact major referenced was unclear] at University of Arizona, finishing up in May.

Pat: You've got your caboose kid too, then.

Kevin: Yeah — 23, 21, and 8 are three completely different parenting experiences. My older two joke, "why don't you hit him as much as you hit us?" But honestly, my eight-year-old has ADHD, and if I could just address it more directly, I would — instead we're on a year-long waiting list just to get him properly evaluated. That's how backed up the system is.

Pat: I think it's also just tearing down everyone's attention span — short-form content and all that.

Kevin: Completely — if you post a four-minute video anywhere now, it's not getting watched.

Pat: That's part of why I just let this podcast run long and figure out later if we've got anything good.

Kevin: We've got two or three good clips out of this one — we're good, let's keep going.

[31:40] Pitching Kevin as the NFL Correspondent

Pat: I have an idea I want to run by you — since you're such a legit NFL expert and a regular on radio shows around town. We had a correspondent check in weekly during the World Cup — what if you did something similar for us during NFL season? We could do a remote check-in, talk about the games coming up, what you saw the week before.

Kevin: I mean... yeah, I'd be into it.

Pat: I'll put you on the spot — you can think about it. Also, some skincare?

Kevin: Oh, I could use it. Have you guys been using the stuff we gave you last time?

Pat: Yeah, I can tell.

Kevin: I'm not really a skincare guy, but I do use it — I promise.

Kevin: We can talk football anytime. I'm a sports guy through and through. Why don't you like LeBron, by the way?

[32:45] The LeBron vs. Kobe vs. Jordan Debate

Pat: It's not that I don't like LeBron — I actually agree with what you said earlier. I just don't love it when people call him "the GOAT," specifically around closing out games. In the movie, you can see Dru Joyce is kind of the glue of the group, the outspoken leader — even back then, LeBron wasn't always the one taking the final shot in the biggest games. That's part of how I see LeBron's dominance: not necessarily the "clutch closer" type.

Kevin: So where would you put him on your all-time list — you've gotta have him behind Kobe.

Pat: No, I wouldn't — that's a hot take. He's an assassin.

Pat: Wait — you'd put LeBron over Kobe?

Kevin: I don't really think of it as a close call. I think there's real distance between Kobe and LeBron. Kobe's closest to Michael — the killer instinct, the one-on-one dominance. His individual numbers don't come close to what Michael did overall, but people connect them because of that mentality. If you're guarding Kobe versus guarding LeBron, and it's one-on-one, Kobe destroys LeBron every time. But the game is five-on-five, and I think LeBron is the better five-on-five player — and since the NBA is a five-on-five league, that matters more. So: Kobe, better one-on-one player. LeBron, better five-on-five player. But even in the highlight clips where Kobe's dominating LeBron individually, LeBron's team was usually still winning. So yeah — LeBron's in my top five. Kobe's more like ten-ish for me. That's the beauty of it.

Pat: That's basically how I feel about it in the NFL, too, honestly.

Kevin: What you do, you do — I've got problems, that's a whole other set of problems. [laughs]

[37:30] Wrap-Up — The Chicago Draft Pick Poll

Kevin: Thank you, thank you — September, buddy. It's the sad thing about this business — when you've got homies in the stand-up game, you're always around each other, and then careers take off and you stop seeing each other as much. We used to hang out three or four times a year; now it's more like, "come do my podcast and I'll give you free soap."

Kevin: You want some lotion? You want to drive an hour and a half, bring your kid, and have him sit in a closet? You can. [laughs]

Pat: That was the best part — I asked you to bring your kid, and you brought Marcus's kid, too. We offered daycare.

Kevin: We got Starbucks, bought the kids a bunch of cookies they don't normally get, and figured out logistics for when he's climbing the walls on the drive back. Otherwise, it's been great.

Pat: I'd love to have you back for some NFL stuff.

Kevin: I'm in, man — just let me know, craft something for me. You've gotta be fired up about Caleb Wilson, by the way — he looks legit.

Pat: [laughs]

Kevin: I'm going to run a poll — who's going to have the best Chicago career: Caleb Williams, Caleb Wilson, or Roch Cholowsky, the White Sox's number one pick?

Pat: That's a great poll. Going off what I know now, I'm big on Caleb Wilson — big time. Not totally sure why.

Kevin: He's got something to him, right?

Pat: He's got the attitude, for sure.

Kevin: And with Caleb Williams, we've seen a Michael Jordan before, but we've never had a Caleb Williams — a true homegrown Bears quarterback like this. So for Wilson to "win" that comparison, his success would have to be so much bigger, since if it's ever close, everyone defaults to Williams because it's the Bears. I think the Bears go 15-and-2 this year, honestly.

Pat: They won't be that good.

Kevin: They might not be 15-and-2, but they'll be fine — they'll right the ship.
