SPEAKER_02

Alright guys, we're back here with another episode of Top Shelf Grumbling. We're going to get into uh first our uh episode is sponsored by uh Drew Chapman of Patty Turk Properties. You can give him a call at 317-1331 uh for any of your real estate needs. Uh we appreciate Drew. He's been a uh sponsor of this uh this podcast for a long time. A state fan. A state fan, actually, yeah. He just uh he just knows the good talent when he sees it and he can't help it. Isn't that right? Anyway, speaking of seeing good talent, uh what a great segue. Segway, yeah. What a great night. Dynamite segue. Dynamite segue. Um Pete has been uh hot on the trail. Uh we just got uh that four-star receiver, Alvin Mosley, uh committed, I think it was a couple of days ago.

SPEAKER_00

Out of Texas.

SPEAKER_02

Out of Texas. Um that's that was a big get. Um he was highly coveted along with uh uh the other folks, Mitchell Turner, um the uh the the second coming of the law firm, uh Ben Jarvis. Green. Ben Jarvis, no, not Ben Jarvis Green, that was Ben Jarvis Green, Ben Jarvis Shoemaker. Ben Jarvis Shoemaker, uh anyway, and then the uh the other one was Antonio Berry as well, too, which is a big pickup. Uh we did lose out on uh Caden Moss to Ohio State, which there was some crazy stuff. I don't I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

A lot of stuff going on under the under behind the scenes.

SPEAKER_02

I don't I don't because there's so many instances where uh you know Ole Miss kids you know or kids go to Ole Miss. I don't want to hear, you know, some people just make a decision and then you can say what you want to, but those people are just conspiracy theorists or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Uh he wanna go to Ohio State, and you know what, it's and look what I've been hearing that the this is this is not this is far from a dundee.

SPEAKER_02

But hay ain't in the barn yet, is basically what he's trying to say.

SPEAKER_00

You can say the same thing about the other kids that we just got. Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

I I you know what, to be honest with you, I'm I like recruiting and I used to really, really like recruiting, but now I kinda wait until the the folks run out of the street.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I kind of think it's gonna the way they're gonna do it now and kind of uh make the transfer portal less what prevalent. Why what do you want to say? Less wild, wild west. They're only gonna have like a four or five day window. Yeah, there's no spring uh window anymore at all for the portal.

SPEAKER_02

The the problem with the portal is that you were going on the whims of an 18-year-old who was also being told by somebody. You might be second string next year to know, and here let's go get this money. You're really not that, you know, some of these some of these folks are in the background talking about these folks, say, hey, let's go get as much money as possible because we see that they're not gonna be uh, you know, as as good of a talent as they, you know, maybe once were or something. You can just tell when folks I know, like this whole Tennessee thing with Chaz Coleman and that was just never gonna work out. Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. We dodged a bullet, LSU dodged the bullet, you know, lots of people dodged that bullet. Um you just you know you could see it on writing on the wall, you know, flashing money pictures and all that stuff.

SPEAKER_00

It just Well it's one thing talk going back to the the portal windows, it was always crazy to me they had one after uh after spring practice. Yeah. Okay, well a kid finds out he may be second string, well I'm leave, I should I should be starting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and then nobody then nobody picks him up. And then nobody develops, you know. That's right. I mean that's there's a reason why you're not starting um because a coach, if they're honest with you, which I think that's a thing that um you know our staff is gonna do a good job is being honest. Hey, you know, you're you're either gonna play special teams, this is gonna be your role, uh, or we're gonna develop you.

SPEAKER_00

That's what Pete Golden said. One of the first things he said, like, look, just be honest. We're not perfect. Okfer's not perfect, you know. We just gotta be don't be there's there's no reason not to be honest with them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Just a uh aside real quick, I know we're gonna talk about some recruiting here, but um, I want to touch on the the Trinidad um rebuttal too to what uh Lane said uh the other day. That was I think uh very telling of you know uh what it's like to be here. Uh a lot of folks don't want to talk about it, but um everybody who's saying that there's an issue with you know Oxford and and Mississippi and all these things, we haven't gotten past those things, don't live here. They don't they're from somewhere else uh and and have a you know a a different viewpoint uh of something like that. So I was proud of Trinidad.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely standing up and saying, saying hey, well, it's not even a good idea. He called him a liar, basically, like I uh I've never seen that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, never seen it. He's like, I've been here, you know, this long and have never you know never experienced it, never seen it. Um, you know, his parents are like you said, you know, very religious, and uh they were they were like, of course we want to be in Oxford as well, too. So anyway, moving on. Uh recruiting trail, you know, big pickups. Uh we still got some you know some some holes to fill as well, too. Uh but man, you know, shoring up the uh the defensive line and the offensive line and grabbing a offensive player too, grabbing an offensive player, that shows me that you know there's some faith, you know, in what's coming down the point.

SPEAKER_00

Well receivers are I just receivers are a dime of dozen. Of course you got you gotta have them, you want good receivers, but you see you stack you we're we're stocking up on the on the uh line offensive line, defensive line, defensive, secondary. Um those are the ones that are hard to find, especially in high school. Um and look, you you've got to have a good mixture of high school, portal. It's looking to me like this staff one was like a 70, 30, 60, 40 high school where the other stuff the previous staff was vice versa.

SPEAKER_02

Well, at least you think about it now, it's really it's really obvious now. The reason why the the portal was used so heavily beforehand was that there was no real development or program building. It was let me s let me show my high flying offense. Uh this is all uh a dress rehearsal for something else, you know. We should have seen that coming. But um if you're if you're a little bit more than a few years. My easyness may have had to play a part with of it too. But that's and it's also, yeah, like you said, not going to see people. Uh Marcel Reed had a had a great um interview the other day and saying, you know, he he never came and saw me. Uh and that's the reason why.

SPEAKER_00

That was the deciding point really in his recruiting recruitment.

SPEAKER_02

But you know, they said that that may be, you know, a a side off story, but it we really didn't have to wasn't that the same one that uh Yancy got in trouble with.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not sure. About uh he said he he he qu put some quotes in the story and it wasn't his and I don't know. I can't remember. Uh they're like, I didn't say that to anybody. I think I'm pretty sure I'm pretty sure that was the that was the kid was Marcel Reed, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He's the reason why I went to AM, right?

SPEAKER_00

What if we didn't call him uh that reporter Yankees reporter up for the old mess? Made me go to AM. Um but uh I've I'm not I'm not really losing any sleep over Marcel Reed, but it's the how many how many players is that did that happen with while while he was while our previous coach was here. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

But moving on the only one moving on for sure, but yeah, you have to reflect sometimes on some of these things when it becomes apparent what was happening.

SPEAKER_00

These guys we've talked about, Antonio Berry, the the four-star offensive tackle, Ben Jarvis Shoemaker, the four-star D-lineman from Ackerman, Mitchell Turner, the four-star D lineman from Louisville, Alvin Mosley, the uh wide receiver from Texas. All the all uh every single one of these could have just about gone anywhere they wanted to.

SPEAKER_02

And Ben Jarvis tried to. He had an interesting uh 48 hours, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Committed to old Myth, I'm shutting it down. Shutting it down. And then 12 hours later, I'm going to Colorado. Be different. Be different. Then he apology letter. I was just God should have done this.

SPEAKER_02

You know, I'm 40. I don't even know if you know how old I am. I'm doxing myself here. I'm 40 years old. I don't have time for that. I'm close enough. I don't have time for all that. Uh it's ridiculous. But uh anyway, glad to have him in the boat. Uh we'll we'll see, uh, we'll see if they all make it there. Look, these September.

SPEAKER_00

I've been saying this since Pete started putting this uh class together of former Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippians, uh people that know the program, proven proven recruiters from other big time programs. Yeah. Pete himself, like this staff is the best recruiting staff Ole Miss has ever had, bar none. Now, I don't know how they're good they're gonna be on the field. I think they're gonna be pretty good on the field coaches too, but by gosh, every blue chip that puts out a top five or a top ten list just about has Ole Miss on it in one way or the other.

SPEAKER_02

Um you've seen a lot of that.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, uh this this like I said, this style's gonna um it's gonna keep uh people busy that write about it. Speaking of that, David Johnson, uh throw me a 365. Yeah, absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

Head on over there for all the um if you like the recruiting stories and you want to hear about all these things over and over and over again, unlike uh me sometimes.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, they're um You can read all about it. You can all the more we got some more big time recruits that I suppose announced, I think, this weekend sometimes. July the first, I think I saw or something uh maybe tomorrow. So uh head over to OMS 365 for the uh most in-depth recruiting coverage you're gonna find out there uh bar none.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, great message boards as well, too. You can talk about the recruiting in there. Absolutely. Absolutely, absolutely. Well, you got anything else for our recruiting segment for this evening? I think we've covered the stuff we got going on right at this moment.

SPEAKER_00

Well, like I said, we got some more coming down the pike here. Um and look, this this this is the slow, what they call the the slow dog days of summer. You know, we're gonna uh I don't know when we'll start our football regiment schedule. This dear football season, we're gonna have I'm gonna have a we're gonna have a live show on Thursdays. Um a late night recap show. Either on well, may it's probably gonna be Saturday night, possibly Sunday, and I'm also gonna do a gambling show, pregame show, like on Saturday mornings, yes. Grab your coffee. Grab your coffee, and maybe I'll still be up for the night before.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know, but we'll see how it goes. We'll see how.

SPEAKER_00

Uh filler episodes we're gonna do. And we're gonna do a um We're gonna pick each sixteen, uh, all sixteen teams. A review of the SEC, basically. Review the SEC season. We're gonna pick all sixteen teams. Not all sixteen in one episode. We're gonna do we're gonna uh break it down. Randomly fix uh randomly pick four teams each episode. And um tonight, this is the most random uh four teams you can ever imagine. And uh all these teams we pick are unknowns, like new coaches, new quarterbacks, um Which seems like every year it's like that for every team. Cut's on the hot seat. Uh we'll start off with Auburn, new coach, Alex Golish, um knew everything. They got the the the the Brown kid from uh Byron Byron Brown, Brian Brown, whatever his name is. He was at South Florida. Bynum, I think is his name. Something like that. Bynum Brown. Insert insert generic name here. Uh anyway.

SPEAKER_02

Insert long throwing motion.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he looked terrible in the spring game, supposedly, but anyway.

SPEAKER_02

They'll have a good defense. Good defense. They kept DJ Durkin on. Yeah. They'll have a good defense and a lot of talent. There'll be a lot of, you know, SEC.

SPEAKER_00

There's a lot of people that are like, it's like it's popular. I've heard Michael Borge and several oh, they're pine on, like, August's gonna be terrible, it's a terrible hire, like I mean, I think it's the jury's still out. He may be a good hire. He had one he had one good, like one good year at South Florida and one bad year. So, I mean, we'll see. Um I said a good defense. Um I'm going six and six though. I just I just think it's gonna be tough. They got a pretty tough schedule. I'm giving them I'm giving them six and six for the first season.

SPEAKER_02

I think six and six would be uh right up their alley. I mean five and seven's not out of the question.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's absolutely not.

SPEAKER_02

Or or worse, but everybody's you know, it seems like everybody's uh schedule's daunting these days. Like every single SEC schedule is. Yeah, they'll they'll definitely be in every game. Yeah, Auburn's uh gonna be an unknown, new coach, uh new quarterback, new system. Uh maybe they'll finally get a quarterback that I mean Hugh Freeze just absolutely put that place in the toilet.

SPEAKER_00

He really didn't, other than they couldn't get a who couldn't get a quarterback.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but that's you know, that's a talent evaluation.

SPEAKER_00

Like that's a that's a part of it, is saying, hey, is this person And everyone's still he had all the money he wanted last year to go get a quarterback and he went and got Jackson Arnold to be like your savior and give him like two million dollars. Anyway, moving on. Eight and four excuse me. Wasted money. Missouri here. Well moving on to Missouri, they're the other team. Look, Eli Drink was a good coach. He gets a lot of uh g guff and stuff for being a goober, but he consistently built a winner from the ground up, basically, at Missouri.

SPEAKER_02

I mean He's got some high, you know, h high high flying offenses and and you know, and pretty kind of evenly he's got some pretty good decent defenses too. Athletic, athletic defense is what it is. And they gave up a lot of points last year as well, too. And seem like a lot of unknowns this year.

SPEAKER_00

Got a good running back.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, nice, yeah. Ahmad Hardy.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Um got a pretty tough, I got a really tough schedule, actually. But I'm gonna give them I'm giving them eight and four.

SPEAKER_02

Eight and four for Missouri.

SPEAKER_00

Eight and four.

SPEAKER_02

Well, and we got we know two flo uh players that are gonna be playing for uh Missouri would be Austin and Simmons.

SPEAKER_00

Austin Simmons and uh Did we know that for sure, for sure though? Is he gonna be the starting quarterback?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, they've already they've already named him the starting quarterback, and that was months and months ago. For sure. And then uh the honey badger or whatever, what do we call him? Yeah, Caden Lee. Caden Lee. He was he was honey something. Honeydew. Honeydew. Um he went to go join his his.

SPEAKER_00

Kind of a transition year for Missouri, kind of a rebuilding year, really. I mean Yeah, yeah. But eight and four. They could go high. Those these are one this is one of those teams they could go ten and two. I wouldn't be surprised if he went six and six, either. I mean.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I think eight and four is a good a good call for them.

SPEAKER_00

Um moving along here to Bama. Another unknown. I mean, who's their quarterback?

SPEAKER_02

The jury's still out on Calen De Boer as well, too.

SPEAKER_00

I mean Look, if if De Boer don't if he don't this this is a do or die for him. He will either make the playoffs. He'll get run out of town. He'll be moving he'll be moving back up north. Yeah. In a heartbeat. It's just to me, it's one of the like it's like a it's like a it's not it's not a fit. Kind of like the Brian Kelly thing. I remember when they whenever they first hired the board, the first thing he did was Saban had a little had like an old school looking office.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like Barry Bryant could have been in the 70s. De Boer made head, it looked like Walmart. Like it was just like, what are you doing here?

SPEAKER_02

Bright? You know what you know what's so funny is like now that I'm you know you think about Nick Saban and what his role has been after leaving uh college football, and you look at Calen De Boer and that hire, I almost think now maybe that uh Nick Saban had a hand in De Boer getting hired because make him look better. He made it so 'cause you know what we know he had a hand. Here's the worst here's the worst thing for Nick Saban. A coach comes in and and immediately is just immediately successful. Just as good. It's just the it's it's it's just Alabama. It's just the the process and the you know, and it's just Alabama instead of Nick Saban. So Nick Saban, you know, Cale De Boer comes in, he goes, Oh, I think you should hire this guy right here while all the all the while he's like This guy's gonna he's gonna fall. He's not gonna be terrible. He's not gonna be terrible, but he's gonna be a great football coach, but he's not gonna be a good fit. And I think Cale De Boer's yet to fit in Alabama. You know, I really think that's kind of a I don't know if he ever will. I don't think he ever will either. But their recruiting is like what a funny, what a funny aside there for Nick Saban.

SPEAKER_00

I wouldn't put anything past that ways.

SPEAKER_02

Nicky Satan.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, look at their recruiting. They're like 14th out of the 16th in SEC, and they're saying, well, we're taking a small class this year. Yeah, a small class. But they're they're their small classes like four or three stars, you know.

SPEAKER_02

They've got zero of the top ten players in Alabama right now, I think. I think they got zero. It's something crazy like that. How's it even possible? I don't know. Some Auburn, Alabama uh ex content came across my feed.

SPEAKER_00

Then a L a LSU fan or Bama fan or whoever a blue b of so-called blue blood will call you an idiot for saying then I'll change college football, you know. No, yeah, we're the idiots for pointing out the obvious. I mean Indiana just won a national championship. I've said this a million times. Vanderbilt, who we're gonna talk about here in a second, just flipped a five-star quarterback from Georgia. If I told you that two years ago, nobody would have believed it. Or Indiana won it all, you wouldn't believe that either.

SPEAKER_02

No, or you'd have been like, there's some high flute and cheating going on for sure. If uh if Vandy's obviously had to pay somebody under the table, but something like that. They didn't have to, they just paid him over the table now. Anyway, great segue into Vandy's.

SPEAKER_00

Great segue into Vandy. Look, um and all these teams we picked that uh just happened to be tonight are all like transitioning, weird, like Oh, I don't think we didn't call it Bama, you said nine and three. Oh yeah, Bama, yeah, nine and three for Bama. Yeah. Which uh they got a tough skin. That that's that's also one of them that could they could go either way. You could go north of nine and three, or you could go South in a hurry. South in a hurry.

SPEAKER_02

No, the boar loses a game or two early and then the They could uh they could do they could Brian Kelly him five games in if it's uh if it's bad enough.

SPEAKER_00

You think so?

SPEAKER_02

If he's if he's two and three with some bad losses.

SPEAKER_00

And get the hell about him a good time or two, maybe.

SPEAKER_02

It might be bad. But yeah, they got they got a bunch of a bunch of uh question marks. But so does Vandy. They got a five-star quarterback, like you said, they they flipped from Georgia. Um I can't remember the kid's name, but he's huge. He's a giant human being.

SPEAKER_00

Big year for Clark Lee, uh life after Diego Pavia. Yeah. Had a really good year last year. Maybe let maybe should have won one more game. Um probably really should have been in the playoffs. Um They got a kind of a not an easy schedule, but I think a fairly decent easy schedule they're gonna get. I got them going seven and five, eight and four. I'm sticking with seven and five. Like seven and five, too. That's pretty uh I think that's gonna be about what they're gonna go either way. I g I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

With a new quarterback, even though, you know, five stars freshman, uh, even if he is a starter, I mean I don't even know if they've named him as a starter either.

SPEAKER_00

I think but hey, I don't think they have, but uh that's that's tough.

SPEAKER_02

So seven to five I think is aspirational for me.

SPEAKER_00

You think it's a little high?

SPEAKER_02

I think it's a little high for him. I think they may fall back down to Earth a little bit next year. Five and seven? I'm five and seven on him. Five and seven. Well there goes four of our teams out of our uh our SEC uh I guess it wouldn't be a preview, but a review or uh I guess it is a preview of the of the season. It's football season. An overview, yeah, an overview of them. It's about football season. We don't really have anything. Some guy came in the other day and and uh to the store and he said, Man, is there anything on the TV? And I said, Well, you know, and all you World Cup fans, I apologize for this. And I said, You can watch, you know, World Cup soccer, and he said, Man, if I want to watch somebody try to score for three hours, I'd take my buddy to the bar. And I thought that was a hilarious.

SPEAKER_00

I have watched less than there was one night here a couple weeks. The last time I we had I had anything to drink, we we watched something over here and there was nothing else on. Well, I watched like uh 20 minutes maybe. I can't remember who it was playing. Uh I I just can't get in. I tried to get in with soccer.

SPEAKER_02

I just apparently Mexico's up two to nothing right now, is all I know. Mexico.

SPEAKER_00

Who are they playing?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. I do not know.

SPEAKER_00

Me neither. I do not know.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you got anything else for the pod tonight? Gonna wrap it up?
