SPEAKER_01We're back here with another episode of Top Shelf Grumbling. We're going live tonight. Picking my teeth over here. Picking your teeth. Getting your teeth. All right. So we've got SEC Media Days. Got a lot to lot to talk about. It's talking season, as they say.
SPEAKER_00The season's here, really. I mean, this is it'll be here in two shakes of a it will.
SPEAKER_01We're joining we're uh we're here in the uh in the Wilder Fitness uh studio once again. We appreciate our sponsors uh for this. This episode is actually sponsored by Top Shelf Grumbling. It's us.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01So if you're looking to uh want to sponsor uh a podcast, and uh we get a bunch of views and uh we're getting more every day. So uh reach out to us on Facebook.
SPEAKER_00Got some ad sheets maybe coming soon through the podcast. Packages and stuff.
SPEAKER_01So anyway, we'll get on to it. Uh just shameless shameless plug there for sure. Um got some SEC Media Day highlights.
SPEAKER_00Are you good? I don't know. I got more for later.
SPEAKER_01Yep, get with us now. That's not good for the camera.
SPEAKER_00Okay, and I'm back here.
SPEAKER_01Sorry about that, folks. Toothpicks are incoming. Uh anyway, uh, we're going to go over um SEC Media Days um wrapped up uh today with um a rousing rousing few folks and a not rousing folk. Um not rousing folk. Not rousing. Uh anyway, uh we're gonna start off with uh some of the Don's uh pickups from the last few days. Uh just kind of an overview.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, just uh kind of uh yeah, like he like he just said, a little overview. Yeah. Uh John Sumra, I like this guy. You know, he did kind of say some weird things whenever he got the job, kind of like but I think he was just nervous. Yeah, of course. I think he's a good uh ball coach. Um if this would have played out differently, I think he would have been the coach at Ole Miss.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Well, and here's uh you know, I want to I want to put something to bed real quick that is known uh, you know, in in Ole Miss people, but if you're not an Ole Miss fan and you're watching this, Pete Golding has never gone after a head coaching job. Um he had turned it down in every aspect because he wanted to be a defensive coordinator and he wanted to be a ball coach. He didn't want to deal with all the head coaching things.
SPEAKER_00Now that it's like he had he could have had the Q lane job twice.
SPEAKER_01But now that you've got general managers and you've got all these people that he named today that do all the bullshit, as he called it, um, you know, it's less it's more coaching. Yeah, and it and it did give him an opportunity to be a coach. But this whole thing of like uh he would have never gotten a head coaching job if it wasn't for this situation is totally false because he was not searching for a head coaching job.
SPEAKER_00I hadn't really seen that narrative. I'm sure it's out there but on the LSU.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, it's but Somerall could have been our um could have been our coach.
SPEAKER_00Uh if he never would have left the playoff team. He said, you know, he said lane you reached out to and was like, we're kind of in the same position. Like, no, we're not in the same position. I'm not what do you mean?
SPEAKER_01You're leaving two lanes to go to, uh obviously, you know, um a different tier of football to play at Florida. But even the same division. Not even the same division, and you know, and one's going from an SEC rival SEC school to an SEC rival. Uh it's it's apples and oranges uh all day long, and that was uh ridiculous for him to say that to it.
SPEAKER_00But very ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01But it's good for uh for Summerall to kind of put that to bed as well, too, and say, hey, you know, I would have uh I'd have been like, I'm sorry, I can't I can't go. Uh I got a team, you know. Somebody's the reason why Nick Saban wanted him to go to LSU because it's your best chance to win, you know, a national championship, except for the team that you had uh last year, which was And he said something like that today.
SPEAKER_00Well more on that later.
SPEAKER_01More on that later. Anyway. But yeah, I think I hijacked that. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_00I think Florida, I think Florida's gonna be uh uh maybe one of the surprise teams this year, I guess you would say. Yeah. Oh yeah. Win eight or nine nine ball games. Um very competitive football team, I assume. Some Raw's won everywhere. He's been I mean he he's uh something like he's been the conference championship game of whatever conference he's been in. You know, he he won he uh won at Troy, then at Hugh Lane and uh Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And he's made stops at Ole Miss and uh in Kentucky.
SPEAKER_00People forget he was linebacker's coach at Ole Miss at one point in time.
SPEAKER_01He cut his teeth in the SEC as well, too.
SPEAKER_00They went to uh he's from Kentucky, right?
SPEAKER_01That's why he I don't know where he's from to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_00I think he's from I think he played at Kentucky. I think that's why he left. Um I think you are correct about that. But um just kind of, you know, coup uh observations here. Uh Kirby, he uh said said the quiet part out loud about us I don't want to use the word succeed, but um breaking away.
SPEAKER_01Breaking away.
SPEAKER_00Which I don't think it'll ever happen. And there's no that's just succeed, not succeed, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's what I meant. That's what I said. That's what I said, but I didn't mean it. I mean that I said that. Anyway, yeah, he did uh he did mention it. And you know, I think he's w one of the old heads in the in the conference now, so he has a little bit more of a voice on that. And you know, when it comes down to it, it's all about money, uh it really is, and and actually fairness. And I hate to say it, but you know, Kiffin made a point today about letting a nine and three team in over somebody who's 11-1. Oh, he's definitely right. He's definitely right about that, you know.
SPEAKER_00And Saban was right too. He's like, just because your conference has a national championship does not mean um you have necessarily the best conference.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, and the best team could have been left out from, you know, taking on a ridiculous schedule. Uh playing a lot of games. We got five road games now. It's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, eight home games or uh everybody's about got a neutral somewhere now, you know.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00I just I was gonna say this for later too. I'm gonna kinda throw this in right now. There there's low energy Greg Sankey, underwhelming just yon. Double down on the gut moving to nine games, like like it's I said it was a g still a good idea, you know. I mean, give me a break.
SPEAKER_01Well, and I think it's also one of those things where it's like he's gonna try to force the the hand of the committee. I mean, he he basically said we had we had bad conversations with the committee. So um I think that's like a almost almost word for word, he said. So it's kind of like doing anything else. We're gonna force the issue, we're like, alright, we're gonna play nine games. Uh I don't know how exactly that is, but uh it sounds like he's that's the only reason that it makes sense.
SPEAKER_00I'm not blaming all this on uh people call him stinky stanky. That's like the worst nickname. I hate that nickname. Yeah. We can do better than that. Greg Stanky. Greg Stanky. I mean, I mean, I hate stinky stanky, the nickn the nickname. That's about like old piss. Yeah. I mean, anyway, he it wasn't like he just like, well, I'm gonna make it we're gonna win the nine games, that's it, I'm making this decision. He had the blessing of all the he don't that that don't happen with uh without. Well, at least the majority sign off on the majority of the ADs being okay with amongst other big money people. I mean, so I'm not really blaming Sankey for it. He's just Okay. The SEC, there's a pretty wide gap when he took over versus the other conferences, and that gap is I think the Big Ten well the SEC still has the most players drafted in the NFL draft. I mean it th the to me the conf the conferences is neck uh are neck and neck, and the Big Ten was a better conference last year, I think. Yeah. But I still think year in, year out of arguments.
SPEAKER_01I think you could make an argument too that the Big Ten style of football is more disciplined. Um, you know, that for the for the longest time the SEC has relied on athletes, athletes, athletes. And even, you know, even Pete Golding said uh yesterday uh it's it helps out when you know you're we're better than them. You know, when the one dude is better than the other dude on the other side, when that happens, it's it's Jimmy's and Joe's or whatever they play. But at the same time, you know, I think a more disciplined style of football, you know, sometimes can beat that with scheme and with all those things. And if you're uh you know and you're doing it better. So I I think you can give Big Ten that, but uh top of the line, too, they're not playing the same you know, schedule and hurt their body's the same, they're fresher, their legs are fresh.
SPEAKER_00You know, it's I've always said that the the the lesser conferences you only have to get up two, maybe three times a year. Maybe maybe a few more times than that now in the Big Ten because uh they've expanded or whatever, but in the SEC it's every single week. If you're not ready to play, you're scratching the beat ass, going back home on Saturday night.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Well, circle back to Kirby. You know, he had a point. Uh on the circle back here. I mean, he he had a point. Is anything else you want to you know?
SPEAKER_00No, he's I just think I just think that He seems pretty like you know, hum ho. I think that's um I think us starting our own thing is.
SPEAKER_01Did anybody ask him about the racetrack around Georgia?
SPEAKER_00No. But I don't know why they don't. Um the cops have to have a vendetta out against this team. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I mean you that stuff goes on everywhere.
SPEAKER_01I mean, but you think they got like a database of all the cars, the full players drive.
SPEAKER_00There for a couple years the the o the OPD kind of had it out for us, seemed like. Yeah. Um but uh kind of back to what what he what Curry was saying, he wouldn't have said that if he wouldn't didn't think it was maybe a possibility. Yeah. And what what I think his point is everybody's saying we gotta fix this, fix that. Nobody's doing anything. Yeah. Everybody well, a few people a few people went to before Congress.
SPEAKER_01And it's called the Save Save College Football Act, which if you know Congress, which it'll won't save college football. It's whatever they name it, it does exactly the opposite. They need to call it the Ruin College Football Act, and then it might work.
SPEAKER_00I mean it has some I've read I mean it's got some good things, like the provisions, you know.
SPEAKER_01But I mean I just why not it take Congress uh for that to Well NCAA sucks, so and they're they're uh a petulant child when it comes to all this stuff, and they want it, they're aware of the biggest thing. They don't want to lose, yeah. They don't want to lose, they don't want to look bad. Um, you know, they're if uh an academic establishment, um, I guess first, but uh no, I I just I don't agree with that. Anyway, moving on from Kirby, who else uh who else you got? That was interesting.
SPEAKER_00Um Josh Hypel kind of took a sh this was a weird and odd to me. He kind of took a shot at Lane. Oh, about the mustard. This was I don't fall. I've caught on taken up for Lane two or three times here already tonight. Don't worry, we're just gonna lay it on anything. And saving, taking up for saving too. Um he said have your mustard ball and golf balls ready when Lane comes back. The SEC ought to step up in he deserved he he should be fine for that. Review somebody in the head from a golf with a golf ball from Neeling Stadium, that's kill somebody.
SPEAKER_01If you're in the top if you're in the upper deck, that's uh that's reaching terminal velocity.
SPEAKER_00I mean that's kind of I mean, seriously, I think it's very kind of wreck. If he is still if he was still the head coach at Ole Miss and he said that, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean could I mean that's just kind of we'd be upset about it for sure. Yeah, he may be feeling the heat a little bit here because I mean there were kind of some jokes. I mean, Summerall said he was gonna throw the podium at somebody because their phone went off.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, you're whatever.
SPEAKER_01You'd be running loud right now if it was even one of my players in the team meeting Did you see where um where uh Paul uh Feinbaum said he was upset that Ryan Silverfield said his hot his wife was hot? He's like, and of all the things that happened this week, and Paul Feinbaum takes offense with Ryan Silverbell and somebody said he must have turned down an interview or something like that.
SPEAKER_00Must have had. Scrum? Where they like take it field in questions and like the media. Yeah. They like got they like did that like very quietly and like got it out of the way and like all their media packed it, went back home.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_00It was like under the rack, like, see, nobody even they why not? Nobody even knew they were there.
SPEAKER_01Nobody, nobody. Somebody did say that uh I saw today on Twitter that they're like at one point in time the the guy had to come out and be like, hey, hey guys, this is a this is a media event. They're like, stop cheering.
SPEAKER_00There's some uh b uh some some supposed some old miss reporters that clout, they try to they tried to the haters tried to make it out to be uh out to be like it was a bunch of them. It was like two or three people. And it was like they were like two of them they said were girls that that may work for the football team or something. Like it wasn't yeah. Well, kind of back to hyper what the his idiotic comments about the golf balls and having it ready again. He was like very buttoned up in Coop Speak, and then he said that he must be feeling the heat a little bit. I mean I mean you gotta think. If he goes seven to five this year, he may be I look, I th I'm I'm higher on hyper than most folks. He's a very good offensive coach. Yeah. They uh uh they hired a uh defensive coordinator, uh supposedly is very good, and they got Indiana's, I think, strength coach. I saw somebody say, so but if he goes seven to five this year, you know, yeah, their expectations are always high.
SPEAKER_01I mean, they spend a lot of money at a big stadium. A lot, a lot, a lot, a lot of money. Got a big stadium, you know, a lot of expectations.
SPEAKER_00Um I thought that was kind of weird him saying that. Uh the Kentucky coach, is it Will Stein? Will Stein. And I got a feeling this guy's gonna be good. He was at Oregon's offensive coordinate offensive coordinator. Of course, you never know if you when you're hiring a coordinator first time. I think he played at Kentucky. No, he played at Louisville.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I'm thinking. I thought he was Washington's offensive coordinator.
SPEAKER_00No, I thought he was Oregon's, but I may be wrong on that. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't I mean, all I remember from him is saying that um when they asked him what was gonna change about uh Kentucky football and make it better, and he said he was.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what I was like. It was kind of like he was trying to be like Kirk Signetti, like, yeah, we're gonna kick your ass because of me. I don't know, that's kind of like who would say that? It kind of makes me not want to like him anymore. Yeah. Well, I think he's I I just got I don't know what he did. I have a feel I got a feeling he's gonna do good at Kentucky. I don't know why I have that feeling.
SPEAKER_01I remember seeing some guys that were some Kentucky folks on Twitter and they were like Minchie was throwing the ball in spring and somebody saw like a deep pass, and they were like, What is this? We've we haven't seen this. Yeah, like a deep pass, and you know, hit him right in the gene. He's like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00He's like placing their waiting on it for 10 seconds.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. He said, We hadn't seen a pass over 15 yards.
SPEAKER_00Was there a quarterback they had last year that they had played for like eight teams? He started out over, he played against us, he was awful. I don't remember. I can't he probably they paid him a bunch of money. Oh, yeah. And he like was god-awful. I can't think he played, he started out over, I can't think of his name. That's how bad he was. Yes, how bad he was. My mind is like shut him off.
SPEAKER_01You can't do it.
SPEAKER_00Um Nick Saban gave us uh a pat on the back, so he thought Pete would do good at Ole Miss.
SPEAKER_01The only problem is that Nick Saban gave every single person a pat on the back. He was he was Mr. Politico. Oh, yeah, yeah, they're a great coach. They're gonna do great. They're gonna do great, they're gonna do great. Except for I think Arkansas. I think he's the only one he was like, eh, well, I don't think so. Not gonna happen. But yeah, he did give us a pat on the back.
SPEAKER_00I just can't put back put path like this. The Jimmy Sexton must have lifted the gag order or w whatever you want to call it.
SPEAKER_01Well, the money's in the bank already. It's okay, no matter. You can do it if you want to. Are you gonna say what he thinks? Yeah, I think the contract signed. Jimmy Sexton hadn't cared since the ink dried.
SPEAKER_00Um screw Nick Saban. Screw Nick Saban. See, see our last episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if you don't like Nick Saban, go watch our last episode because we don't like it.
SPEAKER_00Um by the way, I should put us on Facebook and Twitter and everywhere. Starting here in a couple weeks, we're gonna be doing a lot of uh a show on Monday night, a show on Thursday, and two shows on Saturday. So it's fishing to ramp up. It's fishing to ramp up his football season. But um, moving along here.
SPEAKER_01Oh, bad sheet's coming soon, by the way. Um if you'd like to sponsor the Top Shelf Grumbling Podcast, please reach out.
SPEAKER_00Trinidad is a is a is uh already a pro. He's like buttoned up. Oh man. Um knock on wood. Um cool as a lot of things. We kind of talked about the night. The people people who watch film are high on Trinidad. There's a reason for that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Chase Daniels is uh does a great job breaking. If you go go go look at his YouTube channel, by the way, Chase Daniels breakdown. I never have seen a lot of he breaks down a lot of quarterbacks. I've watched him break down Trinidad and some other ones, and he's got high praise for his decision-making ability and and you know arm strength and his you know his ability to read defenses and stuff too. Did you hear about speaking of uh not reading defenses, John Mateer uh just absolutely, you know, at the mouth said, Oh yeah, we uh we we don't really have time to read defenses, we just kind of throw it at somebody's open. Like, just you know, maybe not at SEC Media Days. Maybe you shouldn't say that.
SPEAKER_00Got a comment. I don't know from Nathan Newell, why did I know about this live?
SPEAKER_01Oh, sorry.
SPEAKER_00Not know about it?
SPEAKER_01Know about it, not know about it?
SPEAKER_00Well, I think you meant to say why did I not know about this?
SPEAKER_01Well, we sent it out. You should be following us. If you like and subscribe and turn on your notifications, Nathan Newell, you can hear about our lives.
SPEAKER_00Like and subscribe on YouTube.
SPEAKER_01You can hear about our lives on our lives. Um Yeah, like and subscribe if you have not.
SPEAKER_00Trinidad Chamblers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Keywon Lacey, uh pros pros, both of them already. Will Eccles, too. I mean, all of them just great, great listens. My my my think my favorite thing was when Keywon was asked, you know, what is your relationship with with Lane Kiffin?
SPEAKER_00You know, and he said, Well, my former coach.
SPEAKER_01He was my football coach last year. Crickets.
SPEAKER_00And they he said he never considered going to L SU, which I don't know if that's true or not, but they was and that you know the LSU moronic media, they say, well, if they hadn't to beat Georgia, the 18 players were gonna come.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, every one of them. I mean, that's just And also, too, that just kind of defeats the purpose of if of what you're trying to say is Lane Kiffin said he could not win a national championship at Ole Miss because he didn't have the talent. He even said today.
SPEAKER_00But he tried to raid every single one of our players.
SPEAKER_01Here's another thing, too. Every time he like quotes something, he goes, uh, somebody said, somebody, like you can't, you know, give credit to whoever. Well, somebody said that we've signed more five stars uh, you know, in the first class than we ever did at Ole Miss. All right, but you want to take all the talent that you had and bring it down there, it doesn't make sense. So your argument is is a is a moot point.
SPEAKER_00Nobody said that nobody ever said that they didn't have a little bit more money than we did.
SPEAKER_01No, absolutely not. But to to act like you you couldn't do what you were doing while you were doing it, um uh it was and wanted to coach for a national championship, but you couldn't win you felt like you couldn't win one there.
SPEAKER_00I mean talking out both sides of your ass.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well, anyway, uh, let's talk about Pete first. Hold on, hold on, just one more second. They didn't want you when they hired Kelly. When they hired Brian Kelly, they didn't want you. They only wanted you after you had success at Ole Miss. So the only thing that made them want you is having success at Ole Miss. They didn't care about the rest of your accolades, by the way, Mr. Kiffin. I know you're not gonna watch this because you've got off social media because your child told you to. Anyway, moving on.
SPEAKER_00You think, well, somebody said you think it was it it was Landry for sure. Was it Governor Landry or was it? Governor Landry Landry.
SPEAKER_01No, he's they said it was Knox. Knox told him to get off of social media. And so and so he'd he all Somebody had to He does whatever his children say, apparently. That's the only thing that he does.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because he feels bad for I'm not I'm talking about because he feels bad for the floor.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to Knox and Landry for raising their father. Since he d he can't do anything without their without them pressuring him or telling him not to do it or, you know, shout out. Anyway.
SPEAKER_00The toll 2024 season, you know, and Pete kind of uh jabbed at him about Florida and uh about Kentucky. Kentucky. Yeah. Something about the something about his ex. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um Lane knew what this was. He's been around Pete, he knew what this was.
SPEAKER_00He uh I was watching another podcast, let's just say maybe a rival podcast. Uh and they said the whole 2024 season, it wasn't just the Kentucky game. This was that they when whenever we played, I think it was LSU they said. Yeah, he was like in the team hotel, like openly distraught, like crying basically, and was telling everybody, I'm in the heart, I'm gonna train wreck mentally right now. This was for the LSU game that we should have won, by the way. Had him by 14 points in the fourth quarter, I'm pretty sure. And so that's that there's three games right there that we should have not lost any of the. We should have been undefeated. We always say we could have, woulda, shoulda, but yeah. And look, I was on my hot record a hundred times saying I won't I want Lane to stay. But all this stuff that's coming out now, really uh uh uh out in the wires, I'm glad he I'm really am not glad. He it's he can win big LSU and he probably will for a little bit. It's gonna crash and burn there, though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, and you know, too, I'm sorry, there's there's ways to handle things. Would you want if you if LSU is the biggest and best job in the land and you want to take it, get up there, be a man, and say, Hey, I think LSU is a better job. I love you guys, I appreciate what you've done for me, but I think this is a better job, and I'm gonna take it, and I understand that I can't play in the playoffs. And be a man about it. But he came out and said today, I, you know, I tried to have my cake and eat it too, which is his MO. That is literally what he's gonna try to find a way to get what he wants whenever he wants it. He's going to. That's that's what he does, even if it's the detriment to other people. And that's just it's proven to that. I'm sorry, but the best indication of future behavior is past behavior. And he's 52 to 51 years old now.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's not changing.
SPEAKER_01No, you're he and he keeps having these revelations, and you know, every single time.
SPEAKER_00I really do think he tried to change.
SPEAKER_01I'm subtracting things. Yeah, but he's to what extent was it what's the motive for him changing?
SPEAKER_00And I say air quote changing because it's You mean you don't think he was these girls were were coming to his house to dog set?
SPEAKER_01I believe it's a PR stunt. Every time he says I'm changed or Oxford changed. Huge kiffin'? I mean, he just endeared himself to Oxford by saying, Uh, you know, I need Oxford needed I need Oxford more than Oxford needed me. That's a quote out of out of his mouth. And he even said, Why would I need to go anywhere else? When he got hired here, he said, Why would I need to go anywhere else? And he also, Freudian slipped in, he said, Why would I need to leave here or live here? He said, Why would I need to live here instead of leave here if I have everything I need right here? And that was, you know, that's before he thought he was a good enough coach to go to LSU. And my thing is, with with Something happened this year.
SPEAKER_00He was going to, if LSU hadn't come open, he was going to Florida. I never thought he was going to Florida. He was going to go.
SPEAKER_01I was dead wrong on that. Absolutely. And you know what? Like I said, the biggest thing is just like just be a man, say what you're going to say. And it's not him hauling around and uh yes, I'm going to leave, and no, I'm not going to leave it.
SPEAKER_00I think he signed uh whatever you call it.
SPEAKER_01An NDA?
SPEAKER_00With Florida. No, not an NDA, a uh re reparando, whatever you call them things where it's like, I'm coming, I agree to I would agree to these terms if I signed them and he signed that.
SPEAKER_01Some lead lease, I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_00They their their media is not that they they're they were too confident. Yeah. All their fans were.
SPEAKER_01Well, and here's the thing, here's the thing.
SPEAKER_00And if you listen to the It was something that he told them they were coming. Also, he looked like an idiot taking his getting his in the middle of a playoff run that he wanted to coach you in.
SPEAKER_01He got his family flying around the country looking at the if you listen to the pillow fight that was the Neil McCready and Matt Moscona um podcast, um, you would know Matt Moscona said that you know he went to to Florida, you know, and or she went to Florida and toured and did all that stuff. And the Her family's kind of from there too. Yeah. And all that was on there, so they had every right to believe that he was, you know, that he was probably going to come there as well, too. But they didn't know that he was scheduled to go to Baton Rouge on Monday. But that's neither here nor there. Anyway, let's get back to Let's get back to the pay.
SPEAKER_00No more lane talk tonight. No more lane talk. That was our lane segment.
SPEAKER_01Um one more uh one talk about uh kind of Jeff Levy. Um I feel like they got better players and stuff, but the energy is just weird. And it may be just weird because it's already weird.
SPEAKER_00They had some see they Yeah, they went to the bowl game. They won the bowl. No, they lost the bowl game, didn't they? I can't remember. I don't know. They played Wake Forest. Uh we watched at your house, but uh matter of fact, I can't remember if they I think they lost, actually. Hell I can't remember, I really can't. Um They had a chance to get some momentum. They they had two or three games last year that they easily could have won. Yeah. And did not they should have won six or seven last year, and I think that'd be completely different.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like the Texas game. You're up like they were like 38 to 14 in the fourth quarter.
SPEAKER_01I mean, just absolute meltdown.
SPEAKER_00And he d he they I didn't watch many state games this year. I actually like watch them. A lot of state fans just say his like play calling is like he is atrocious. He doesn't know how to run the clock out. Uh he just tries to pedal to the metal the whole time.
SPEAKER_01He's been an offensive coordinator for a long time. I mean I you could say that too, and there were some I think there were some coaching errors for sure, but he also like Camario Taylor was, you know, not ready yet to be what he's supposed to be this year, you know, and so they were playing with uh two not o not good quarterbacks. I mean Blake Schaefer was uh you know Brent Schaefer. Yeah, Brent Schaefer, Blake, Blake Schaefer, whatever. Blake Blake Schaapin, sorry. I forgot his name too.
SPEAKER_00A high chance of being good. But if Levy's a good quarterback, Coach, I just don't know if he'll if he'll schedule brutal this year. And they might wear him down, he might he might not make it to the season.
SPEAKER_01If they'll utilize him to his strengths and not try to make him do stuff he can't do, then he's gonna be ridiculous. Um the problem is he might get one dimensional, but he's just a big human being. He's like Cam Newton's, like, sorry. I don't care if you're you got a one-on-one with a linebacker, he can stiff arm him and go. Like it's it he's that big, so he's gonna be he's gonna be a load. But um Jeff Levy just seems I don't know. I like him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the energy I like him too. The energy is weird there. I don't know. He has to win at least six games. Five and a five and a seven bowl appearance like last year, he's fired. Yeah. But this don't matter. If they don't start spending any money, it's not gonna matter.
SPEAKER_01No, it won't matter.
SPEAKER_00Um I don't know. I just like I told you, I k kind of uh kiddie with him off of air before we started. Like, did Jeff Levy even come to me? Like, I s I was like, he was today, right?
SPEAKER_01You know today, right?
SPEAKER_00Um, let's talk about Pete. Absolutely killed it on the podium. Yeah. Even had the talk uh like your national talking heads. Yeah. Um I still can't get I still can't get over how bad the your national talking head people are at their jobs. Like Michael Borkey said he'd come up to some national, like, prominent guy. He said, I'm not gonna name his name, came up to him and was like, So who is uh Will's Will Eckles kid? Like they was like, never have heard of this guy. Like what he's like You didn't do any research? I mean, like literally any research at all.
SPEAKER_01He had a plane ride to get here, and you didn't, you know, you know, you knew what day it was, he didn't look him up. They got three it's like three players they bring, it's not fourteen. Uh but yeah, Pete killed it, man. Uh I liked it.
SPEAKER_00You know, they asked him about the tamper, and he's like, let's not act like recruit uh let's not act like recruiting some moral thing for the past hundred years. Like, no look, every school cheats, every school tampers, like what are we doing here? I'm so sick of hearing about this tampering shit from us. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Every school in America is I wouldn't even say every school cheats because every school within the bounds of the law or or the letter of the law because it's so wishy-washy, there is no rules. Right. So nobody is really cheating because there's not any rules. Do we need rules? Yes, we need rules but there's there are none. We've said this ad nauseum on this podcast. Ad nauseum. That same thing, exact same thing with the players faking injuries. You're gonna have to make it apparently appalling that there's a huge problem for them to make a change. If not, they won't do anything. They'll just let the they'll let the status quo happen and and then move on. But that's not how it is anymore. Though it's the wild west, there aren't really any rules. Um, you know.
SPEAKER_00That's what what Kirby was talking about. Look, make some damn rules, or we're gonna go off on our own. This is not sustainable. Sustainable, yeah. The money part of it is not sustainable. No.
SPEAKER_01I mean, call it what you want. I mean, Ryan Silverfield was talking about having to get Walmart and you know involved. He's like, he wants he's like, that's over with. And I'm like, so what if Walmart pledges a hundred million dollars to Arkansas football? Every single five-star in the nation is gonna go for ten million dollars to go to whatever it is, whatever the number is, but you gotta you gotta put a cap on it. You gotta put a salary cap on there. And I, you know, I I agree, you know, partly with what Lane said as well, too. You know, freshmen and incoming don't need to make as much money as someone who's the salary cap happened in the NFL for the same reason, and it's exactly what he said. Uh, that, you know, these rookie contracts is Jamarcus Russell made, you know, $20 million a year as an unproven quarterback while they were 10-year vets who were making five. Um, and it's not supposed to be like that. So there's there's got to be something that happens. But anyway, back to Pete. Um the one thing that Pete did do is that he kept his intro short and sweet so he could get enough questions, unlike somebody else.
SPEAKER_00Um I didn't realize somebody else did that. Yeah. Um look, the they asked him about Lane. He took he took the high road. He nailed him in the what do they call the ballroom or whatever after the kind of when they were talking to him. He kind of nailed him about the Kentucky game and Lane being in uh Dallas all week.
SPEAKER_01He might have fucked a little more comfortable off the main stage.
SPEAKER_00Chasing his ex-girlfriend who had to get her stray and order on him while we're preparing for Kentucky. That's neither allegedly. Allegedly. Oh, this is alleged. This is allegedly. Don't sue us. Don't sue us. You're not gonna get anything. Yeah, no, please. Um, but I thought Pete, like I said, Pete was good. This uh Sid him and Lane were good. And look, the all these coaches are gonna be cords with each other because all these coaches have stuff on I mean I'm sure Lane's got a ain't no telling them what on Pete, no, and I mean you know, ain't no telling them what people have on Lane that have coached with him, you know, so they're not gonna be like, yeah. It's a fraternity. It's just gonna be it's it's a f and look, if Pete Golden goes 0-12 for the next two, oh and twenty for the next two years, he'll have a job somewhere as a defensive uh coordinator. Like it's a fraternity, Larry. Like, how many fired football coaches? Like, if you get in the fraternity, you have a job for life. Now you may not be making $10 million a year, but you I mean you're in. Once you're in, you're in.
SPEAKER_02You might be, Ed O said they gave me $17 million. Oh, you wouldn't right now, or you'd take it to me somewhere else. No, it was sign of what door you're gonna be out of, brother. Where are you gonna leave from?
SPEAKER_01Oh, me. Oh, Ed O.
SPEAKER_00They're paying him like $200,000 this year to be like a mascot for To be a mascot.
SPEAKER_01He's gonna wear the tiger head and no shirt. That's gonna be the mascot. Edo.
SPEAKER_00I saw a thread, like a couple of different threads here lately, and people were talking about like fat football coaches, and people were naming Ed O. I'm like, wait a second. People think Ed O Edo's fat.
SPEAKER_01He's not fat.
SPEAKER_00He's like jacked, and I mean he jogs and works out every day. He may eat boudin three times a day.
SPEAKER_01He's sweating it out though, that's for sure. But man, no, Pete did a great job. He um he was charismatic. He was on point, he talked about, you know, something like that. Only cussed two or three times. He only said bullshit once and he said. I remember he said hell or something. No, no. He said, I'm not gonna deal with that kosher bullshit. And then he said something else too, but I can't remember what it was.
SPEAKER_00Can you imagine how filthy his mouth was before he took this job?
SPEAKER_01Can you imagine how filthy it is when there's no cameras around? But I guess there may be more cameras around now.
SPEAKER_00He asked about they asked him about tampering too, you know, and uh I could like like I said a while ago, I couldn't.
SPEAKER_01Dan Walken asked that question too, by the way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I noticed that. Like ADs tamper with coaches. Like this is like I said, what are we doing here?
SPEAKER_01All these ADs calling the other coaches trying to get them to get a job somewhere else. He's like, Y'all are y'all full of shit, basically. Of course.
SPEAKER_00Um thing too about this this wouldn't really discuss on media date, I don't think, but you know, the people have been talking about his mix of high school recruiting versus portal. There's certain positions that he believes you need to develop in your program. I'm not really sure what positions he believes those are. Yeah. Clearly O-line and D line, but um He's been signing a lot of high school kids there. But I mean that's true. Like you receivers or a dime or does you can go get one a transfer portal receivers from anywhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, also too, like uh just an aside from that, the you saw where uh David Gabriel George was signed with uh Tennessee, I think it was yesterday. And he's gonna get I don't know, six million dollars over three years or something. He's got a three-year contract. Um Tennessee guy? He just he just committed to the running back. Yeah, the running back. His arm like the size of me. Yeah. Anyway, the the the point is that you can develop people if you can give somebody a three or even a four-year contract. Nobody's probably gonna sign a four-year contract, but uh at least two or three years is better than one and done.
SPEAKER_00Three is golden.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, one and done is all right, I go there, I got a million dollars because I'm a freshman, you know, I didn't get any playing time because I'm not as good as I thought I was, and now I'm going somewhere else. But now you got a million dollars of your money that just got wasted basically on somebody you're not gonna you're not gonna develop. And you know, there's got to be some clauses to let those kids out if they're not being developed, if they can prove they're not being developed a certain way, as well as it's not. Yeah, but anyway, uh back to back to what you were talking about. I just wanted to want to point that out.
SPEAKER_00I can't remember what I was gonna say. Uh I lost my uh place. Um oh yeah, Pete took touched on the people kind of well, Lane took all the offensive coaches. That's not true at all either. We still got John Garrison, who's been uh one of the best offensive line coaches. I mean, yes. I mean last year everybody was worried about our O line and we even brought a we even brought a kid in on a visit like after uh I think it was after Fall Camp. I mean right, maybe maybe during Fall Camp, which is a like, oh shit, you know, we're beat. But he uh he's been knock on wood, he's been a great O-line coach since he's maybe maybe the first there was some criticism, maybe his first year, cause uh Lane ran off uh Leby's buddy, I can't think of his name. He's a good offensive line coach. Uh he ran him off over something and hired uh Garrison. But I think that's right. Maybe uh but anyway. I can't remember that. And then Joe Judge, yeah, that's right, because I think he's been seven, been here. I think Garrison I think it's the seventh year. So he's got the O line. I think our O line's gonna be great this year. And look, Joe Judge staying is also huge. I mean he's he's like the common fourth, I believe. Yeah. Gonna call look for Giza, NFL coach. Former NFL head coach coach. Um it wasn't it wasn't his fault they weren't any uh they didn't it wasn't his fault they were not any good uh when he was at the Giants.
SPEAKER_01You know, obviously one of the probably the biggest reason that Trinidad Chamlis, you know, is is here at Ole Miss, and one of the reasons why he's he didn't stay. And I hold on, I want to I want to talk about the quote that on three put out too that Pete Golding said, and they absolutely chopped it up and did not put the entire full quote, took little lines out of it, made it sound like he just looked at Kewan Lacey and and uh and Trinidad Chamlis and said, you know, those th those words about you'll they'll piss on piss on your grave and all this stuff. Oh, yeah. There was way more context to that that they left out, um, and it's kind of bullshit that they did that. So you guys suck.
SPEAKER_00Clickbait, yeah. They click bait you through.
SPEAKER_01Suck. Um anyway. They really are. But it was it's true. Everybody said, Oh, that's a terrible pitch to say that. Um, it obviously worked um because they're still here, and they understood that you know, leaving a legacy for what they can do, they got unfinished business. You know, you want to go to LSU and start all over? Uh, or like go assemble some Voltron ass team down there?
SPEAKER_00Well, they're gonna spend a whole shit ton of money, but I just I think Lane's gonna win at LSU. I just don't think they're gonna be that good this year. Their defense is not gonna be very good. I'm not sold on what you call it. They spent all that money on the quarterback.
SPEAKER_01Sam Levitt, who they left at out outside of Media Days because he was leading a team-led a team-led practice. He was that's that's the reason that they gave that he wasn't here. Oh, it just happened to fall on this day. You gotta be shitting me, man. Like I'm I'm telling you, this is the stuff that bothers me about this dude, is that you just don't tell us the truth. Well, you know what? He's still um he's got an injury uh that's a really, really glaring thing, and we didn't want him to answer a whole bunch of questions about his injury because we didn't think he might be able to answer the questions correctly. We're just he was still hurting. So don't lie. Whatever it is, but it ain't that. I'm sorry. Oh, and he's a massive leader. You're you left your massive leader at home.
SPEAKER_00And brought TJ Doherty like a TJ Daugherty. As like a slap in the face of it, like we give a damn. So they can ask him questions about Old Myth. Seriously. No, I think we we may have brought him last year, but who cares?
SPEAKER_01You brought your daughter's boyfriend, you brought an underachieving athlete who probably should have played basketball. Trey Des Green, they should he should have been playing basketball. He's an athlete, but they didn't utilize him and he doesn't have good hands. Like they keep saying he's a freak athlete, but he missed so many catches last year, it's not even funny.
SPEAKER_00Brian Haydad said on from Super Talk said, Why not just go with the whole bring uh all the transfers? Yeah, just bring all the transfers. Bring all of them, bring uh the old linemen, the Prince Well, whatever.
SPEAKER_01You should have brought Prince Well and Devin Harper and some money, is what you should have brought.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, where's our money at? Where's our damn money? Um kind of talk uh talk about the keywand. Biggest upgrade ever. Like, us keeping Keywan and getting Frank Wilson.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean, give me that all day long.
SPEAKER_01And people act like Frank Wilson's gonna go in there and and change the way that Keywon Leslie runs the football or something, or like he's gonna have some huge role in in him running the ball. It's like this dude's just an athlete. I'm sorry, Twitter.
SPEAKER_00Well, running back coaches running back coach is just a recruiting position. They don't really coach the running backs. Yeah. I mean they do, but I mean Give me a break. Uh Frank Wilson is one of the best recruiters in the entire country. LSU fans, they loved him for a year. I guess I guess they could say the same thing about us and Kiffin, but.
SPEAKER_01Who's the guy that went with uh with Hugh that was our long time longtime running back coach? I can't remember his name. Derek Nix.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not Derek Nix, but he was receiver's coach, same difference. Yeah, but the other Nick's was running back coach at one time. He moves him.
SPEAKER_01So you can be a running back coach, and you can be a you can be a receiver coach as well, too. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Yeah. That's just and Frank, like I said, Frank will he's gonna get it's not gonna be long. He's gonna get us one of the a big timer creep from LSU they really want, and they're gonna damn lose their minds. Yeah, yeah. Um I ain't really got nothing against Kevin Smith either, but uh the way they handle that running back room in 2024, get out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Get out of here. Get out of here. Get out of here. You were okay. You allowed that to happen. Um, I don't care if you weren't a part of it or you didn't have anything to do with why we're gonna.
SPEAKER_00I wouldn't have signed off at all.
SPEAKER_01I'm not signed off on this deal. No, we gotta we got some kind of Midwest conference wide receiver playing running back. Absolutely not.
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, look, and the LSU fans, they thought they they like I said, they thought they were gonna raid our roster. Every other coach that left it somewhere, they did pretty much raid the other team's roster. Yeah. But it's all because we beat Georgia. That's the only reason it didn't happen.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you you didn't rate our roster, but if you did, you're also taking all the players that he said he couldn't win with. Yeah, yeah. You couldn't win with it, LSU. I don't, it just doesn't make any damn sense. And also, too, there uh um one of their uh one of the opposing uh folks did a podcast that I watched the other day about uh five stars not being you know everything, you know, uh talent acquisition is more about you know who you're trying to find. It's not always you know, look at all these busts, just absolutely hedging, absolutely hedging for all these five stars to fall off the map. There's so many names that you don't remember that were all five stars that came out of high school. Um that that designation is not what it used to be, to be honest with you. Five stars used to be few and far between. Well they can't give it out to anybody.
SPEAKER_00You've been there for a while. I can't I can't remember. It had to have been Rivals or Scout basically back in the day. They had there was a few six stars. You remember that?
SPEAKER_01I don't remember that, no. How awful is that? I would have immediately laughed and turned it off, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um We're still live.
SPEAKER_01I hope so. Phone didn't die.
SPEAKER_00Jason says something sounds off.
SPEAKER_01It's probably just because the microphone's from the computer. I mean, not from the from the phone tonight. Anyway.
SPEAKER_00Sound problems. I swear that's what he said.
SPEAKER_01Okay. We're beat. Tell Jason he says that every time. Sorry. Anyway, you got anything else tonight?
SPEAKER_00Yes, I got a few more things. Well then come on then, let's get at it. Um, a few miscellaneous notes. Um What about these M M C B State players and their TikTok dance? You seen that? I I have. Somebody said, Bring me back the I ain't gonna say that, what I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_01Uh I saw them that uh these kids used to be like harassing Students and beating them up and drinking and smoking. And uh and and now they're now they're twerking on a a TikTok dance. I just I don't know. I ain't got anything for it.
SPEAKER_00The Texas guys too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um twerking like this. Where are the men in this country?
SPEAKER_01Where are the men in this country?
SPEAKER_00How's your hammer hanging?
SPEAKER_01All right, Jason, tell us how it is. Sorry, it's hot in here.
SPEAKER_00Um Yeah, like you said, bring back the speeding and the drinking, for God's sake. Quit twerking on the down. I don't think about speeding, but I mean quit twerking on the danger.
SPEAKER_01Quit twerking on a date dancing on the damn phones. I mean. Yold man yells at Cloud. Your Lord and Savior Lane Kiffin today said that he quit social media because it's just, you know, just uh comparison is the the thief of joy. He just, you know, he's just a damn poet. He's right, but he's doing it at SEC Media Days talking about how social media is terrible.
SPEAKER_00Um shout out to Jackson Suber.
SPEAKER_01Strong showing at uh shout out to Jackson Suber.
SPEAKER_00Strong showing at uh the British Open Royal Burkdale. Kind of let it get away from him on Sunday. No, I had to he's done that a lot, unfortunately. Well, he's had a chance to win I think it was his fourth, maybe fifth time to win this year. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And golf is extremely hard.
SPEAKER_00He just He played lousy on Sunday at the British Open.
SPEAKER_01I mean, how many of those drives did you see too that were you looked where they had where like the aiming point of you know where they're supposed to be going, and the ball looks like it's going right there. And it either hits one yard off and bounces into the the fescue and it's over with. I mean, you've got to pitch out, or you can't, you know, can't put any spin on the ball. It was rough. And dry. I mean, it was dusty. Dusty dry at Royal Buckdale.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they compared like uh six years ago or eight years ago, whenever it was the last time they were there.
SPEAKER_01How green it was how green and lush, and this time it was it was not it was none too lush, none too lush, and you'd see uh the sprinkler heads and like there'd be a little a little ring around the sprinkler head, and somebody said somebody needs to uh somebody needs to put that out a little further.
SPEAKER_00You see where uh what was it? Uh Trend S they like to ride horses? No, uh uh. I did not see that. And Lacey goes to the gun range and I I can I can see that. Yes. Would you ride guns? Ride guns. Would you ride guns and shoot horses? Absolutely. Oh me. Seemed like we've been going for a while tonight. It's football season. It's talking season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're about to get back going uh full time.
SPEAKER_00We've had a kind of a, I'm not saying a lazy summer, but we've had he's works a lot and and uh It ain't even there, it's just also there's the we don't want to put out just anything and we'll wait till we have something good to talk about before we want to.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, we got still got our uh part three and part four of team breakdowns. Yeah, we have put that on pause for our live tonight. So that'll be back on a normal episode.
SPEAKER_00Probably start back, I mean we'll start back Monday. Yeah. Or Tuesday. Yeah, probably so. Might as well start the football Monday, Thursday show. Yeah. It's getting there. Kids are going back to school. God, July kids are going to school in July.
SPEAKER_01That's it, man. The high school kids are going back to to school. Well, uh one of my buddies at work's got two 10-year-olds and they go back on Thursday. On the 30th.
SPEAKER_00In July.
SPEAKER_01In July. They'll have they'll be off for two weeks in about a month, though, I'm sure. That is true. They do give them more. They give them all kind of mid midtime time off.
SPEAKER_00But July? At least it's go to August the first week of August, for God's sake.
SPEAKER_01You didn't think they're not gonna they take into account how much air conditioning they're gonna have to use with these kids going back to school in August. Can you imagine an old junior high affair? I mean that junior high gym's 250 degrees right now.
SPEAKER_00Well, you got anything else tonight?
SPEAKER_01I think I'm good, man. Thank y'all for watching our Top Shelf Grumlin SEC Media Days live tonight. Uh, we want to thank our sponsor tonight. Uh Top Shelf Grumlin.
