Well, well, well, we finally went smutty with this one. As lovers of women's sports, we felt this was the perfect way to break the ice... but is it? The underlying queer themes are strong, and the sex scene language is even stronger. Join us on this WLW book experience!

SPEAKER_00

unknown

That's a good one.

SPEAKER_04

Morning. Morning. How are we doing?

SPEAKER_02

Tiffer seeing like the birds.

SPEAKER_03

I just start tweeting like crazy.

SPEAKER_04

I uh sorry, sorry, sorry about that, everybody. But windows closed today. Oh, window was open. Probably. I'm a big window open when the weather calls for it type of person.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um I just assumed the birds were that loud. They were really party rockin'.

SPEAKER_04

They were party rocking. My mom has a lot of bird feeders, and we're we're a bird family. So I uh recently downloaded this app called Merlin, and it's a bird app. So um you can like it's got like today's bird of the day, and it's it's a likely bird to be in the area that might not always be in the area because of migration patterns and stuff, which is pretty fun. And then it's got a like a I can hit a button and it pulls in like the birds that are chirping right now, and it'll tell me like what bird is probably chirping, and then I can look for it.

SPEAKER_03

You have never sounded older.

SPEAKER_04

That's fair. That is fair. It's it is uh but I was walking, I took goose on a walk like to the woods the other day, and there was this really cool bird, and I did my Merlin app and it told me what kind of bird it was. It was a red-winged blackbird. Isn't that a nice looking bird?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I have been seeing those birds, and I've been like, Yeah, the bird has a red wing. I see them on the place.

SPEAKER_04

And it's in the name. It's literally exactly what it looks like. It's a red-winged blackbird. No.

SPEAKER_03

Um was the triathlon, ladies? Boys? Sorry. Yeah. Mr. You on our own podcast. How dare you?

SPEAKER_04

I hate to speak for Claire, but I had an excellent time.

SPEAKER_02

It was. It was pretty excellent. Um I had about two days of recovering where my legs were just numb. I was afraid I had like laxic acid buildup. But then I realized I started my period the same day of the triathlon, and I always get tingly legs on the first day of my period.

SPEAKER_04

I know you have tingly legs for your period?

SPEAKER_02

I do. I do, I do. I think it's like poor circulation.

SPEAKER_04

Oh man.

SPEAKER_02

Um, so I was a little bit nervous after, but it was an awesome day. We uh Tina was cracking me up because she just she pulled it off, she showed up, she was there, we were doing like uh an intro call, you know, in the Pedin Stadium of like this is all the rules, Tina's nowhere to be found. And then we like walk over to the pool and Tina's doing yoga on the side of the pool, and I'm like, okay, you're you're where you need to be when you need to be here. So I'm just proud, like I'm just impressed. You're making it happen, but it was awesome. It was awesome.

SPEAKER_03

Um what were what was the mileage again of everything 500-meter swim, 10.4 miles on the bike, 5k run.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

Nice. And what what were your guys' times?

SPEAKER_02

Ooh, the results are actually on the website. Courtney, you placed first for our age back rep.

SPEAKER_04

I beat Claire and one other person, the three of us. Hey, hey, I was in third place, okay. Um, so sorry, really quick. Uh Tina showing up with her swim cap on like this. Really, that was it was so good. For those listening, just swim cap on top of hair down, hair down, and then she was trying to stuff her hair into the hair cap, and I was like, I think you should put your hair in a bun first. I think that might be easier. Also, your swim caps on backwards, which I think the way that you put on swim caps doesn't make any sense. I think I would have done it, I would have done it like Tina did it if I didn't have somebody show me. So anyway. Um do you guys remember your times? I think I finished total in like an hour 48. I ran a pretty fast 5k, which I was very surprised about.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Nice. I think the swimming was 20 minutes, the biking was 80 minutes, and then the 5k was 40 minutes, and the biking was 40 minutes because we didn't like Tina had a mountain bike that didn't switch. Oh my god. Oh like it was not another one.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know how she did it on those either.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Was it just stuck, or like the bike just doesn't change gears?

SPEAKER_02

They did it didn't change gears, and it was in a low gear. So she could be cranking her legs as fast as she could, and she's not going any faster. But hey, she showed up.

SPEAKER_04

She did it, she did the damn thing.

SPEAKER_02

Um but yeah, when I ooh, I I was just gonna say, like you we were the almost last ones in the pool. Um, and so we're getting out of the pool, getting to the transition station, and you're seeing all the people with these epic bikes just coming back from the bike. Like they finished the bike in the time that it took us to do the swim. But they also got a head start. They also got a head start. They did because they started the swim earlier. Um yeah, yeah. It was just, it was I feel like if you show up with the right bike though, you could probably do that in some an early time.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I felt way better in the bike portion than I expected to.

SPEAKER_02

Ooh.

SPEAKER_04

Cause because I've never really like I've never really tried to go fast on my bike. I've always just, you know, I'm just like riding my bike.

SPEAKER_03

But it but it someone at the door?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. I think we actually just had big opinions about Courtney riding her bike.

SPEAKER_04

Uh in case the pod doesn't pick that up, Claire's dog started barking. Uh oh, it'll hear it. Her feet were hurting her dog. Yeah. Um but yeah, I've never tried to go fast on my bike before, and I do have a road bike, so it was like the right bike for that. But I really enjoy the bike portion.

SPEAKER_03

Nice.

SPEAKER_04

But I did immediately lose Claire and Tina. I turned around and they were gone. Which makes sense considering Tina's mountain bike.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Claire, did you just hang back with Tina because of her bike?

SPEAKER_04

That was really nice. Yeah, sorry.

SPEAKER_03

I did not mean to leave you guys, but um I also I think it's okay sometimes when you're doing like a little race like that to go off to on your own. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And Claire, our swim actually only took 15 and a half-ish minutes, but it's the whole like because they count like until you're in the transition period, which we were slow to getting to, but we only swam for 15 minutes, which I think is good. I think we did the swim faster than I thought we were gonna.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we all we all stayed with each other, which I was surprised by. Um yeah, it was uh it was there was a moment when we were riding the bike and I looked over at Tina. I was like, Tina, you always want to hang out with me more. Tina's my sister, by the way. Uh, and she's I was like, you just have to keep doing these extreme sports with me. Like that's your that's your end hanging out with me.

SPEAKER_04

As somebody who has hung out with Claire because of sports so much lately, I can attest this is true. Yeah, how was how was hockey? We did not go this week. I was too afraid, I think we were both too afraid of getting hurt before the triumph one. Oh, okay, okay. But I'm so excited for tomorrow. I miss it. Um then we can go. You can just go. Like w you don't have to sign up for the whole thing. You can just drop in and go, like, one day. I'm maybe thinking about it. I They always seem so fun when the ladies are talking about it in the locker room, but I also don't want to overbook myself for this summer, so I might just keep doing the Friday thing. Like as I can. Or if they need subs for a league, I would do that, but um I really I overbooked myself this spring, and I I don't really want to do that in the summer if I can help it. I want or I want to at least be a little more cognizant of it.

SPEAKER_02

So let's take uh let's let's throw the football over to Chicago. Tiff, you ready for the pass?

SPEAKER_03

No, here it goes.

SPEAKER_04

That was a one-handed catch for those of you who couldn't see it.

SPEAKER_02

No, that's a brag. Should I have said let's kick the soccer ball over to Chicago? How you how you doing over there? What's up in Chicago?

SPEAKER_03

Uh things are good over here. I recently rejoined Orange Ferry Fitness.

unknown

What?

SPEAKER_03

That's awesome, dude. So I've been doing that. Um, and compared to 2021 when I first did it and was so out of shape and a little heavier. Um, it's so much fun. I love it. I'm able to do it and feel like I'm getting a good workout versus do it and feel like I'm dying. So that's good. Yesterday we did a lot of um like shoulder and like and like you can't really see me like these kinds of weights. Mm-hmm. You know? And oh boy, am I sore. I really like it because um it helps me do weight stuff, which I'm really bad at doing on my own. So fair. I like doing that, and it's like really it's like high intensity, like quick rep stuff, so that's fun. Yeah, then the running is just easy because I've been running so much, so um, that's nice. But yeah, it's been really fun. I did like a two-week trial, and if you went to four classes, you get your money back, and then I also got like a towel and a snack, and then um, yeah, I signed up.

SPEAKER_04

So love that. I will say I don't love working out, but Tiff, the way that you describe orange theory, every time I talk to you about it, I'm like, oh, sounds so fun.

SPEAKER_03

It's just like, I mean, compared to me running on a treadmill for 40 minutes straight, like it's really fun to be like, okay, we're gonna do like yesterday. What did we do? We did a run row. So you did you started off each block was seven minutes. There were three blocks of seven minutes. You started off at like your your push pace, which I'm still figuring these out for myself because I think when I run, I think my heart rate just gets kind of high because I don't mind being in a higher heart rate, like it feels okay for me to be in a higher heart rate, like I feel okay at that level. But the heart rate monitors at orange zero, like you're in the orange and red when I'm just at like what my normal pace would be, but I feel fine there, so it's kind of crazy. But, anyways, you had to do your push pace and you ran 0.2 miles, and then you got off the treadmill, you went to the rower, and you did 20 push rows. So, like just pushing hard with your legs and stuff like that, and you do that for seven minutes, then you upped your pace, but you only did 15 rows, and then you upped your pace again, but you only did 10 rows. So, um, I don't know, just kind of fun to like switch it up a little bit, and also like I'm we're doing like all you do all out for a minute, so I'm running at like eight miles an hour for a minute, you know. And like wow, just stuff that I'm not I wouldn't be doing by myself at the gym. I feel like I would look crazy if I was at the gym, and like every minute I'm going up to eight and I'm sprinting, and then I'm like walking for 30 seconds, and then I'm jogging for three, and then I'm sprinting again. I've definitely done that at the gym. I know. Well, I've seen people next to me do that at the gym, and I'm just like, what are they doing?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So it's nice to be in a class where everyone's doing it.

SPEAKER_04

It's so weird. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Claire, I feel like you would love orange theory. I guess we gotta do one for Tiff's birthday. Yeah. Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_04

We're on a recorded line. Anything you say will be played back to you later. Go ahead and agree.

SPEAKER_02

No, I didn't agree. I want to support Tiff, so if that's how you want to do it, I'm happy to.

SPEAKER_03

Um Yeah, we're gonna go to Hibachi Casino and then Saturday morning, bright and early, we're getting up to a 4 a.m. ODF class. I was thinking we would do that on Friday.

SPEAKER_02

That's that's after our sub 35k, right? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Who's who's trying to hit that?

SPEAKER_02

You are. Oh, it's a run.

SPEAKER_03

But I we could do a we could do a little five, we could do a little run, or we could run by the lake to 5k.

SPEAKER_04

I cannot do a sub 35k. I'll just I'll put that on the I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I feel like if we get the conditions right. Because what is that?

SPEAKER_04

That's a that's like a nine-minute mile. Oh god. I don't think I've ever run one single mile in under 10.

SPEAKER_03

Dude, so when I did that the 5k race with you, Connor, and Mary, I ran a mile at 9-11, and I was like, why do I finish what's gonna explode? I did I would like everyone to know I did not finish at that pace.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, you and Mary took off, and me and Connor were like, Well, we're gonna stay back here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I am enjoying being active in my 30s.

SPEAKER_04

It's isn't that kind of nice? There's no there's less pressure, I feel like.

SPEAKER_03

Also, I just like feel I just body feels better, you know? Body going bananas, body going bananas, especially if we're like, because it's we're all similar, we all sit all day for our job. Yeah, I really like to do oh, or stand, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Lounge on the couch, okay, or on the couch, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, but I don't know. I find that I kind of look forward to my workout because it's like, okay, I'm gonna move a little bit. And also it kind of refocuses me. So if I can work out in the middle, like at lunch or whatever, I'm ready to go again for another couple hours work-wise.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

That's fine.

SPEAKER_03

But okay, speaking of sports, let's talk about how we dumbed ourselves down over the past two weeks. We went from the smartest book I've ever read to maybe the dumbest book I've ever read. That's right. This over the past two weeks, we read Cleat Cute. Yes, this is a beautifully written book about um two women who fall in love on the soccer field. But uh um, which I will say, and that's kind of the gist of it. But uh essentially, there's a rookie that gets called up for the US women's national team. She's also been drafted to a essentially NWSL team. They call it something else in the book, but we're gonna pretend like we're using all our other words. Um, and uh she ends up on the team with her idol, uh, her crush. Her Mia Ham, her Megan Rapiro. Her Mia Ham, her Megan Rapido, Abby Wombach, Grace Henderson, right? And so Grace Henders Grace Henderson is that the rookie or no Grace Henderson is the pro. Yeah. Yep. And the rookie is uh Phoebe oh yeah Matthews. Phoebe Matthews, thank you, Claire. Um and Phoebe gets on the team, she's there with her idol, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and they fall in love, essentially. Although, can I just say okay, and that's the gist of where we're at. Also, I stopped. Beautiful recaptive. I s Dad Lisa, if you're listening, please stop. Because there's a lot of there's gonna be a lot of colorful language in this. Yeah, I should, I should close my door. Um I will say, uh I have struggled in this first half because I feel like 90 pages in, they're already having sex. I don't feel like they have a ton of chemistry. They're both hot.

SPEAKER_04

I think that's the chemistry. But like Which is kind of a gay man thing more than a gay woman thing. But I mean, the the author describes them both as just being big old hotties.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but Grace Henderson or yeah, Grace Henderson, all I can see is Carly Lloyd.

SPEAKER_04

You've ruined this book for me.

SPEAKER_03

I'm sorry, I can't, that's all I could see in my head.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, because her personality is very much annoying, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's like no nonsense and like not. I'm the captain. Yeah, and it's like I just am kind of like I would never get along with a personality.

SPEAKER_04

Well, Tiff, not to call you out, but when you worked with Carly Lloyd, you were you were actively unexcited, you almost said no to the job, and then when you got there, you got a little starstruck and you were pretty excited. So I don't remember almost saying no to the job. I remember you being like, I don't even want to do this. Maybe you didn't almost say no to the job, but you were like, I'm not even excited. I don't care about Carly Lloyd, which is fair. But then you got there and you were like, Oh, that's pretty cool. Look at the stuffie I took with Carly Lloyd.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I think it was it's tough because I think she had a rough year that year. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, before I was anytime she's not score actively scoring goals for the US Women's National team, I consider it a rough year for her. She's not a likable person.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. She was she was great to work with, though. Um, but it was one of those things where it's like growing up, you see Carly Lloyd all the time. So it's like kind of a similar situation with the Grace. Although, can we also talk about she keeps saying she's old or whatever? She's 26. Ugh. Ugh.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

But she's been in the league for a decade. So her body is probably forked a little bit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but like she got that hip issue. Women soccer players are playing it into their, you know. So it's like that's like a big that's like a big kind of plot point for Grace Henderson is that she's getting old and she has a twinge in her hip.

SPEAKER_04

And yeah. Do we know when this was written? And if not, I'll I'll ask um. Well, I don't know what's page.

SPEAKER_03

Um, well, here. You know how to tell when it's written is by the copyright page. 2023.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, because my one of the this is such a non-issue, but one of my biggest qualms in this book, 2023. So if it was published in 23, she's probably writing it in 21, maybe 22. She talks about wearing a faded pair of toms. I'm sorry, toms haven't been a thing in eight years.

SPEAKER_02

Since I was in middle school.

SPEAKER_03

Listen, the lesbian community sometimes falls behind in fashion senses.

SPEAKER_04

A hundred percent, but like 2020, I haven't seen. We're not that bad.

SPEAKER_03

Are we? There we have a few people that are, you know, it's tough when you're discovering your identity. That's fair. Okay. Because all you have to look on is past fashion trends, and you try to you try to you try to assimilate with one. Like, you know, someone might shave the side of their head thinking that that is what's cool.

SPEAKER_04

Seven years after it's popular.

SPEAKER_03

Made popular by the artist Skrillix. So um no, but I agree with you, Courtney. It's calling out specific trends is tough because it's like that's yeah.

SPEAKER_04

She could have said faded pair of shoes. Like the fact that she specifically called them toms. I was like, whoa, painting a picture. Painting a picture. Also calling it the Shiro's Cup. She said I'm renaming uh I'm renaming the She Believes Cup because that's a bad name, but I'm gonna give it the only worst possible option.

SPEAKER_03

I hate that shit. I hate that shit.

SPEAKER_04

No one hates She Believes Cup more than Tiff. The She Believes Cup name.

SPEAKER_03

Why can't we call it like the America's Cup? Yeah, literally anything. Like, why does why does every women's sport have to be an empowering moment? Why can't we just be playing sports? There's no cool. I just like that stuff is crazy to me. Also, can I say one thing about this book that is maybe gonna make me sound like a turf?

unknown

Uh oh.

SPEAKER_03

Not like a turf. What does turf stand for? Yeah, what's it? It's uh it's a trans exclusionary radical feminist or something like that. Oh, thank you. Like, like that's that might actually be wrong. Can can can uh Paige needs to look that up. But uh uh JK Rowling is a is a TERF. She doesn't think trans people, she thinks trans people are like uh trying to erase women or s some stupid shit. Um Yes, it's you're correct, Tiff. Trans exclusionary radical feminist. Oh, hell yeah. Um well I just there's like some moments in this book to me that feel very heavy handed on like the queer messaging. Yeah. That I'm like, it's just like kind of takes you out a little bit. Cause you're like, okay, I get it. I'm reading a queer book by a queer writer. That's awesome. Like, I love that. But like, do we have to be all like you're preaching to the choir, you know?

SPEAKER_04

It's like it's a little bit L word Gen Q.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's like we're not, I'm not the person whose mind you need to change about this stuff. Yeah. So like I don't think you need to be like hitting me over the head with it.

SPEAKER_04

Like just woke wherever we can put it.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. There's just and like, listen, I was talking to Amy about this, and she's like, I think there's like a type of person that finds those kinds of conversations, conversations like hot and attractive. And I'm like, I get that. I think that maybe that's just not me. Like, I agree with everything they're saying. I want to be clear. But it's like one of those things where it's like do I need to talk about it?

SPEAKER_02

Well, all the time writing is therapy, and as an author, she might be writing because that might be her experience. So maybe it's less about getting other people, but more about her healing journey.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I just I I I think it one thing that's tough for me too is that I just don't, I just am not quite sure it's written well, in my opinion. So I think I'm like my book written well. Well, okay, so here's the other thing in the I don't think I realized how smutty it was.

SPEAKER_02

Here's why here's my full skull was when they were having sex. And they're like, I want to lick your cunt when they cut over any other word. Megan got in the car. Literally, I had been building up for 12 chapters, okay? 12 chapters before the sex scene. And the one reading it's in the car is chapter 12. It's just cunt this and cunt that and cunt this, and I want your cunt.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm just like, literally, Courtney texted me and said, Oh my god, the cunt count is going up.

SPEAKER_04

It's done. I said, I think the cunt count has hit double dig.

SPEAKER_03

It was crazy. That immediately was like, I can't. I can't. Yeah, it's uh that is a choice word. I also, I'm gonna be honest, I hate the descriptor what folds. Oh that's for me.

SPEAKER_02

That one did not stand out.

SPEAKER_03

I also it was outshined by uh by the cunt count.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah, the cunt count was wild.

SPEAKER_03

I yeah, I'm gonna be honest. Like, I'm getting into like I mean, yeah, I think like I don't know if I've ever really read Smut necessarily, so I feel like this is a bad starting place for me because I just I'm not I'm not love with it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think yeah, because the character dynamic's a little rough. Like Phoebe likes Grace because she's mysterious. So Phoebe gets everybody she wants, right? And so she likes Grace because she's mysterious, Grace likes Phoebe because she's talkative and outgoing, and for some reason that doesn't annoy her. It's an annoying dynamic. I've seen this dynamic in real life, it's an annoying dynamic.

SPEAKER_04

Wait, who have you seen it in real life?

SPEAKER_02

It's just it's just an annoying dynamic.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's fine. Um yeah, and I I don't know. I just feel like I know there was like a build-up, kind of, but like I just feel like they didn't interact that much. So I'm like, you guys are already, I don't know, it just didn't make sense to me. Yeah, yeah, I didn't I didn't feel the build-up so much. Um yeah, there wasn't much of a buildup. But the so Megan Rapino and Sue Bird are I broke up, are um turning this into an Amazon Prime series. So I f but I feel like it's essentially gonna be heated rivalry, but women's soccer.

SPEAKER_04

Which I'm kind of excited about because I feel like it'll be way better. That could be fun. The show will be way better written than the book. Depends who they cast.

SPEAKER_03

It's true.

SPEAKER_02

Also, it's very important. Have they casted? Hang on.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know how far they are. They might have to pause a little bit for personal reasons.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, they're professionals. They would never let that get in the way of our gay, of our lesbian heated rivalry, right? Okay. Here's everything we know. Blah blah blah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, sure, not getting into the details over there.

SPEAKER_04

Um, yes.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, wait. We could we could do predictions. What so if they're doing a series, how many episodes until First Kiss?

SPEAKER_04

Okay, I think it might be good. The showrunner is the same person who did Sex Lives of College Girls.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. They've casted.

SPEAKER_04

Uh I don't think they've casted. They just like the makers of it. Um, I don't see. I don't know what showrunner means.

SPEAKER_02

What does that mean?

SPEAKER_04

Uh it's kind of like the director. Yeah. Like the executive producing team lead. What? Um, okay. Let's see. Who is in the cast? Okay, haven't reached casting stage yet. Okay. When does it come out for two years and over the city? Okay, well, what would your guys' perfect cast be? Hmm. But they gotta be young, and I feel like I don't know a lot of young youngins. Jojo C is catching. Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_03

Legendary poll. Jump scare, jump scare. Hmm. I'm trying to think of someone with red hair. Oh, you know who you know who it would be? That that girl from Riverdale.

SPEAKER_01

Is it Phoebe Matthew?

SPEAKER_03

With the red hair? She would be Phoebe Matthews. Oh. And then Grace Henderson could be the other Carly Riverdale with the Grace Henderson's uh Carly Lloyd reprive. Um maybe that would be my guess.

SPEAKER_04

Or are they gonna do what they did in Heater Rivalry and find like kind of nobodies? That could be fun too. Do you think they could get um Chapel Roan? That would be incredible.

SPEAKER_03

The one thing I will say one thing I I hope, but I I don't have high hopes for, is that the soccer looks real. I feel like anytime you watch a soccer show, it's just like so bad. Even Ted Lasso didn't have good soccer. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

So yeah, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna hold my breath, but yeah. Oh, you know who could be a good I'm looking up um just famous lesbians, um, a good uh Grace, Jody Balfour. Jody Balfour. Um, which is uh uh Abby from Broad City's wife. Uh IRL. I feel like she could do like kind of a stern totally. I think that that might be too too old. Too old for this. Shoot.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. What we find attractive, the youths no longer do. You know, this generation after us is wild. I know.

SPEAKER_02

Um yeah, I don't know enough of that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Claire's not Claire's not too into the online lesbian community. So lesbians so much. You know, as they say. Um, yeah, I mean, honestly, like this book is a lot of a lot there's like it kind of just lacks substance. Like I'm impressed that we read 200 pages because I'm like, I feel like that could have been summed up in 50.

SPEAKER_04

But I will say, Tiff you when because you picked this because you were like, we need a brain. We needed a brain break. And it has been that. It has. It's an easy read. Exactly. It's like, oh, I have 10 minutes before I have to do something, or like I need to like kill some time. And it's sometimes easier to read this book than to like scroll on my phone.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I did stop us mid-second sex scene, so she stopped the cut and count before it could get started. I just feel like we could well, okay. So the crazy thing is I was reading this and I was talking to Amy, and I was like, I think this is bad, but I have no barometer because like I don't know, I haven't read a lot of this stuff or really like stories about women falling in love or whatever. So it's like, I don't know, maybe this is just what we have. Like maybe this is maybe this is good. Oh. Um, and then I was reading, I was, I'm reading this book of short stories. And they're like, you know, three to five pages long. And there was one short story that was about this woman that's like pining after this other woman, and I was like, that was better in three pages than this book was. What's it called? Uh something about the dead being in the ocean or something. Uh-oh.

unknown

Hmm.

SPEAKER_03

It's just a book of short stories, but it's really good.

SPEAKER_02

Isn't it crazy to think what's up? No, you go ahead. Isn't it crazy to think that we're just like one action away from being in contact with like Megan Rapino and Superd. Like this woman just wrote a book and through that like action of releasing her book, she is deal. So if you ever want to like be in the whims of somebody, it's like create good art and attract their attention. Or just create art. It doesn't have to be good.

SPEAKER_04

She is. I'm on her website. I'm on her website, and um she is definitely a smut author.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I will say Amy read another one of her books. Something to talk about? Yeah, she said she did not finish that. And Amy's not a non-finisher.

SPEAKER_04

Yep. Do you think that though do you think that the author is older than us or younger than us? I'm gonna say younger.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry, I was looking at her. Um younger.

SPEAKER_04

You both said younger. That is uh false. She is older than us. Okay, but see, I also kind of get that. How old is she? She was born in 1990, so she is. Oh, not that much older than that. Yeah, no.

SPEAKER_03

But this does very feel, this does very feel. This feels very much like someone from our generation writing a book about this. I feel like if it was someone younger, it might there might just be a lot more slang that we would maybe wouldn't know. Let's talk of snapbacks and toms. Whoa. The snapbacks are crazy. The snapbacks are crazy. Yes, Courtney, I just saw what you sent me.

SPEAKER_04

Claire Hardy Sar, so otherwise I would explain a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Uh any does anyone have any favorite quotes from the book? Anything special?

SPEAKER_04

Yes, I sure do. Uh let me find it. Sorry. Um it's it's so there's there's two. Phoebe always had a lot of game. Not in the soccer sense, or not just in the soccer sense, but in the flirting sense. It's one of her favorite hobbies. It's not actually one of my favorites, but I've like, I like cringed when I read it. And then my other cringe, sorry to read a sex scene out loud. She's talking about the color of her areolas. Do it. Phoebe pinches one and it blushes pinker. This is the part that I highlighted. What a party trick. I was just like, come on, come on.

SPEAKER_03

This is so bad. I I would like I would like to read a passage.

SPEAKER_04

Luke chapter 2, verse 3. That's where I'm well.

SPEAKER_03

This is this is like about the turf thing that I mentioned. Like, there's a little, and this is like where I'm like, they have no chemistry because I'm reading this and I'm like, she was saying a joke, and you kind of took it in a way that it wasn't, and it just kind of I'm gonna be honest, I was like, I read this and I was like, oh my god. Like, you know. Okay. If Grace hadn't moved to play, she would have been a lesbian teenager in the middle of nowhere, upstate New York. It might not have been much better. Being so focused on soccer probably saved me from a lot of conversations about boys when I was growing up, she says. Right, but like Phoebe glances around like she's making sure no one can overhear, which Grace appreciates. Your family knows you're queer, right? Grace decides to fuck with her just a little. Who says I'm queer? Oh my god, you cannot be one of those people who thinks queer is a slur. Like I am going to walk out of this restaurant and leap into the river if you say that to me right now. Grace laughs. No, but I had to get you back for joking about the fairy ride being romantic. Phoebe blinks at Grace, her face gone slack. Grace wonders if there's something in her teeth. What you okay there, Phoenium? Phoebe shakes her head quickly. Yeah, sorry. I was just really thrown by the possibility that you had bought into turf rhetoric about queer. It's really important to me as a word that includes trans people in my community. We didn't mention nothing about trans people was mentioned. Anyways, continuing. Of course, Grace says immediately embarrassed that she joked about it. I also like it because it doesn't tell anyone too much about your business. Obviously, as a Grace grimaces, wishing there was a better word, but celebrity of sorts. There's parts of my identity I keep to myself. Very few people need to know what specific label fits me best. I'm gonna be honest. That's like hitting me over the head with a big ol' hammer. Yeah. And that's just yeah, one example of kind of I feel like that's kind of sprinkled in and out here and there, but that was like the most blatant example. And I'm like, you guys are not able to have a conversation. This is your button heads in a weird way.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I mean, yeah, Grace is hot and cold, it's confusing. Right? It doesn't seem like she picks like she's very unregulated and has a lot of damage and needs to do inner work before she gets in a serious relationship with such a bubbly person. She's gonna start tearing Phoebe down. Exactly. Phoebe, you're too precious.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It's just a weird, it's just a weird talk about a scene that really resonated for me.

SPEAKER_02

Hell yeah. I love Claire's resonations. So I don't have the exact quote, but it was when they were at Mardi Girl, because I was with my girl Tiff at Mardi Girl once.

SPEAKER_04

Hell yeah, got it. Do you guys have a similar Ohio?

SPEAKER_02

So you didn't have a similar night. Yeah. I don't know, Tiff. What would you say? I was pretty blacked out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Claire hopped out of an Uber at a stop sign because she thought he was kidnapping us, and I was like, Claire, I'm following it on the app. He's following the route. And then she threw up in the first one. So whoops.

SPEAKER_02

And then I woke up on the toilet at the host Airbnb's home.

SPEAKER_03

We were saying we were sharing an Airbnb, but Claire slept in the bathroom head in the toilet. So that was a wild night.

SPEAKER_02

A sharing. Uh it sounds like Grace and Phoebe had a wild night at Mario Gras too. They went to a bar and Phoebe was uh flirting with this other person. This is not the part that resonates. The part that resonates is Phoebe goes to buy drinks and she looks at her wallet and she's like, I did not know that drinks were gonna cost this much. That that was very resonating. Yeah, it's not so cheap down there. Not so cheap, especially at that age, you know, fresh out of pocket.

SPEAKER_03

Clara, you and I we found a liquor store and made our own little drinks and just walked around with those. Sometimes you have to do that. Claire and I flew Spirit Airlines, shared a twin bed in a shared Airbnb. A twin bed? I was making$15 an hour in Chicago. I couldn't afford anything. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

And I was a substitute teacher. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

We had no money, but we were down there.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah. Showing my titties. I believe.

SPEAKER_04

I'm sure they're somewhere. It's just sitting on Tiff's nightstand.

SPEAKER_02

Your future kids are going through your old camera and they're like, oh my god.

SPEAKER_03

It's just a little flipbook of Claire.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, Claire.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

That's funny. Yeah, so funny.

SPEAKER_03

Overall, uh, ratings-wise. Are we to the ratings already? I just there's not much to talk about. That's true. It's like pretty, it's a pretty content list.

SPEAKER_02

Wait, wait, wait, wait. We didn't talk about how Phoebe works at the local diner.

SPEAKER_03

That's true. Because women are so underpaid.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Another lesson I'm so glad this author is teaching us that women are underpaid. Yeah, there's like a whole fight between Phoebe and Grace where Grace is like, yeah, we're gonna get dinner, and Grace and Phoebe goes silent because she's so upset, and then it's like, you can't just assume that I can go to dinner. It's like, okay. She's like, I don't make enough money. You make money because you get all these sponsorships and blah blah blah. And Grace was like, okay, I'm sorry, I'll pay.

SPEAKER_02

I want to go to dinner.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's like, anyways, I just feel like there's a lot of it. We're getting we're getting a lesson taught to us while we get our porn. It's porn with an agenda.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, but if anybody had to do that, maybe there wouldn't be so much porn in the world.

SPEAKER_04

So you know what? We we need more lessons. Porn needs an agenda. I agree. Do you think, speaking of that, okay, pretend you're like 20 and you're like, maybe I'm gay. I don't know yet. I haven't watched the L-word to find out. Do you think that this book would have been helpful to you? I think it would have been helpful to me. I think I would have been like, oh, yes, I'm gay. And women should make more money, and I can't be a turf.

SPEAKER_02

I think the moment during sex where they started loving each other and and using cut, I would have been like, I think I'm straight.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. That's been in the same boat. I would have been like, yep, there's no way I can do that. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

So I think it would have had the opposite effect. But think about how did you guys watch the L-word when you were like curious?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it also did kind of turn me off a little bit because I was like, oh, there's a lot of aggressiveness happening in here. And I didn't immediately find any of them attractive, so I was like. Carmen? Well, that's like deep into the seasons. Like that's not during the first couple seasons. So it's like.

SPEAKER_02

Alice. Alice was always cute. Alice is so fun.

SPEAKER_03

You really, you really get to. I'll just say it's like so outdated that I think when I was watching it, I was like, why does everyone look like this?

SPEAKER_02

Also, the main character, Ginny, was very much of an ick character for Ohny's disgusting. Jenny sucks. Um, so I think we found out that Cordy's more gay than Tiffany.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, no big deal. Okay, so she's accomplished the most masculine. Okay. And then according to that poll that I put on my Instagram last summer, I must I think I won. Nope. I did not. I'm not sure I got a point. I Claire didn't win, and Claire is the clear winner in my mind.

SPEAKER_03

Claire did wear a dress to her own wedding.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, that and that's how I when we're talking about who's the most feminine, that's what I'm looking at. Who's wearing a dress to their own wedding?

SPEAKER_03

But spiritually, I have more girly energy, I think. She starts dating a femme and just chasing her.

SPEAKER_02

Just because you're more hygienic than somebody doesn't mean you're more femme than them.

SPEAKER_03

I disagree and think hygiene might play some big points. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

She was like, wait, like, because you're more hygienic, you think you're more femme?

SPEAKER_03

That's so funny. I forgot about that.

SPEAKER_02

We'll just have to do a poll every year and we can be on our deathbeds, and we'll be counting, we'll be counting the poll instead of counting cunts.

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna be buried in a dress, so yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And it's somebody else has to run the poll next time because my Instagram feels a little bit biased. Because I did win. I won seven votes to Tiff's five, to Claire's two. Y'all don't know me. Yeah, I got Juliet. Okay, so the people that know all of us, Juliet voted Tiff, which is respectfully, Juliet, that's crazy. I think Juliet's on to something. Amy, giant bias, also voted Tiff. Yeah, we're femme for femme. Michaela voted me, Claire Hughes voted me.

SPEAKER_03

Well, yeah, that's because they are Claire. They're my adversaries. They're doing that to piss me off.

SPEAKER_04

I I do not remember this. Claire Beanie voted Tiff.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I don't remember it either.

SPEAKER_03

Hell yeah. That was post uh karaoke bar where we had a couple uh lemon drop shots.

SPEAKER_04

Couple lemon drop shots. We made friends with a stranger. Tiff was asking where that person got their clothes. Yep. Checking the tags.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. Oh, I had a Wisconsin old fashioned for the first time. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

What's a Wisconsin old fashioned brandy?

unknown

Ooh.

SPEAKER_03

It's a sweet, it's a sweet version of an old fashioned. I don't like uh I don't like either.

SPEAKER_02

And so if we were if we were gonna score this. Which we are, not if we were gonna score. We're not rating it. We're gonna score how many goals? How many penalty kicks would we give? Out of five? Out of five.

SPEAKER_04

Penalty kicks? One. See, I think it's getting four penalty kicks because penalty kicks are easy, quote unquote, and this book is easy. That's how I'm looking at it. But if it's like a star rating, then yeah, one.

SPEAKER_03

The goalie is my libido and it's blocking all four other shots.

SPEAKER_04

I was in the middle of the first uh the first sex scene and my grandmother called me.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, it's not like anything was like. No, it's not like I was revved up. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

But it was just funny because I was like, oh, I really gotta change my course right now. I gotta answer. I got cunt on the brain.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and in a bad way. Yeah, the the dirty talk happened.

SPEAKER_02

Also, let me just say, I I maybe I'm just not this skilled. But for two women who supposedly couldn't get off as easily, being able to have two back-to-back orgasms in the matter of minutes in a locker room after they just edge for however long, like bullshit. I'm just gonna say it. Bullshit. You do not know how to do the T-spot. You do not know how to do two bad No, Grace. I agree. Women aren't that easy. No.

SPEAKER_04

And also, weren't they afraid of somebody walking in on them? I don't think I could. I think that would be.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe that added to the maybe that added to the the heightening.

SPEAKER_02

They pick and chose their fears. They pick and chose. Oh my gosh. That was just it was just too idealistic for me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yep. Alright, so with that, unrealistic expectations for women, even in a very anti-TERF rhetoric book. So that's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Navigating some tough terrain there.

SPEAKER_03

I'm surprised we haven't didn't get a whole lecture on the female orgasm before it started. Like here's the history, and actually, scientifically speaking, why not make a drier room before you get in there? Uh floating.

SPEAKER_04

Alright, did you want to kick us off?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, Claire, you want to kick us off? No. Two. I'm gonna give it two penalty kicks. Um yeah, two penalty kicks. Why? I just I thought I look like smut. And like after reading this, I don't think I like smut. Claire said straight smut only.

SPEAKER_03

I think we just have to find some good some stuff that's written a little better.

SPEAKER_02

Should we just pivot our book club to be just smut only?

SPEAKER_03

Or just searching for good, good smut.

SPEAKER_04

In search of smut.

SPEAKER_03

No, I mean I do actively feel a little stupider having read this book, and I am afraid for anyone to see me reading it in public. Yeah, that's an ad hoc. So if we're doing our normal rating system, I'm gonna give it a one. Thank God for Kindle.

SPEAKER_04

And it's available on Kindle Unlimited. So Claire, are you listening to the audiobook?

SPEAKER_02

I'm listening. Whoa!

SPEAKER_03

How are the sex scenes?

SPEAKER_02

The graphic.

SPEAKER_03

Um she's in the car with her wife making Claire.

SPEAKER_04

I do next time we're together, I want to listen to it. Just for a blip. I want to hear what the the narrator does.

SPEAKER_02

They've got their own voice. Um, so when they change chapters, because it's it's Oh, it's two narrators? Yeah, it's like um it changes perspective. Thank you. It changes perspective. So there's two voices, and they're like older, like the voices are like older women, it sounds like, so it doesn't really match like the youthfulness of them. The youthful energy. The youthful energy, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um have you guys ever ran the beep test? Yes. I like tests. Hell, oh, that's crazy.

SPEAKER_03

It's just like I like it because it's like short. Yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

It's quick.

SPEAKER_03

And I just kind of like that kind of workout. I feel like I'm I'm I feel like like I was saying, my heart rate gets high, but I get back into resting really quickly, so like even just like a little short rest, I'm good to go again.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, well, we should run the beep test this summer at Claire's house. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I think I would I would absolutely beep these shoe guys.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I'm certain of it. I was never doing that.

SPEAKER_02

Claire's just training beep test in her backyard. Oh, incredible. That's awesome. So do we have any predictions? Wait. Well, we have to do our ratings. Claire, give you a rating. Oh, we're doing the real ratings? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'll give it I'll give it a two. It's like easy to listen to in the background. Yeah. What about you guys? Um I'm also.

SPEAKER_04

I give it a one.

SPEAKER_02

A one, Courtney? I'm going two.

SPEAKER_04

Because it is, yeah, it's easy. And I don't want to say I'm invested, but I I wanna he I want to see what happens, even though it's a rom-com. We all know what happens.

SPEAKER_02

But that's a great way to look at it. I could fully not listen to any more of it. Um I could I could put this book down and well, one is a DNF, right?

SPEAKER_03

One is a DNF. Oh, okay. Well, I'm gonna finish. Or a one five. Do you want to go one five? One five. It's not a DNF, but uh I would actually hold on. I would actively recommend not reading this. Yeah.

unknown

Claire.

SPEAKER_03

That's a good book, Claire.

SPEAKER_04

Um okay, predictions for the the following chapter. Yeah, what's gonna break them up for a blip before they get back together at the end?

SPEAKER_03

Well, obviously, Grace is gonna find out that Phoebe told Don about her hip.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And But didn't Grace tell Don about Phoebe's sleeping schedule issues?

SPEAKER_03

Uh I can't remember, or Don might have just noticed or something. I think she was just so out of it that she's gonna that's that's gonna cause a fight between them, and that but then Grace is gonna be like, oh, it was good. I went to the like maybe Phoebe gets injured, and then Grace, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that'd be fun. Phoebe gets injured, and then Grace can't help but be worried about her, and then everybody knows about them, and then she unblocks her fear about having sex with teammates, and then they're do you think we're they're gonna end up together?

SPEAKER_04

Yes. I think they have to, by way of this being a rom-com book.

SPEAKER_02

And then and and then the sequel they'll go to divorce.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. Um do you think they'll kiss on the field? Do you think it's bad enough that they'll kiss on the field? Because I'm kind of leaning towards they might kiss on the field.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, they go to the World Cup and they win and they kiss on the field.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, like after the game, but still on the field. Yeah. I think that Grace, who's got this weird, she's out to make out with me to get my spot on the team. I think that energy is gonna continue. That is such weird energy because she's got the the other character, Kelsey, who like they never had sex, but they were hooking up, and then Kelsey just like was using her or something, and I'm like, that's a really bad way to use somebody. I just feel like that plot line Unrealistic.

SPEAKER_03

That plot line could just disappear, and the book is the same.

SPEAKER_02

That plot line only needed to exist so that when they did the beep test, Kelsey had a reason to suggest well, you should kiss her. Yeah, the dare. Which is like crazy.

SPEAKER_03

No teammates would ever be like you guys should like what?

SPEAKER_04

Also, do you think that they're really using last names like the way that they do? I don't think to the point where they're calling each other Matthews in bed.

SPEAKER_02

I call Megan Beanie in bed. Just kidding.

SPEAKER_04

That's the funniest thing you've ever said. Especially because why did I believe you for a second? My apologies. My apologies.

SPEAKER_03

Claire sold it. Claire sold it. She did. I mean, I do think it's crazy that they're still calling each other last names.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. But they didn't really know, and it bothered me there too.

SPEAKER_03

But they also don't really know each other, and Claire, I agree with you there.

SPEAKER_04

Fair.

SPEAKER_03

What were the heated rivalry names?

SPEAKER_04

Uh Hollinger. Ilya Romanov. Romanov and Hollinger. Holland Hollander?

SPEAKER_02

Hollander. Hollander, because it sounds like Hollander. Heated rivalry probably helped make put this book on the map. But I think it was happening before.

SPEAKER_04

I think this got announced before. Oh, did it? Before Heat Rivalry came out. Granted, Heated Rivalry would have been in the works.

SPEAKER_03

But Claire, I get what you're saying, where like heated rivalry drew attention to more smuddy LGBTQ content.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I will say, incredible timing that we picked this book up the exact time that Megan and Sue broke up.

SPEAKER_03

Got a divorce, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

No, they never got married. Oh, they never got married, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, they're just breaking up.

SPEAKER_04

They were engaged for like a very long time, which I don't think you have to get married. I like I too would eventually just want to call somebody my fiance or like I feel like after a while, girlfriend just is kind of like, okay. Do you are we in are we in seventh grade? I want a wife.

SPEAKER_02

Well, when you sent your um your birthday party invite, it was like casino batchy, which for like hibachi casino, but I always thought it was a bachelorette.

SPEAKER_03

No, no. You'll know. Good. You'll know. Good, good. Um at dinner with Amy's family. I said, I only want to get married for a bachelor so I can have a bachelorette party.

SPEAKER_04

Oh my god. Incredible.

SPEAKER_03

You know, it's gonna be epic.

SPEAKER_04

Incredible.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um what was I just gonna say? I do you guys have the tea on Megan and Sue? Like, are they usually? It's very tight-lipped, I feel like.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. But language. But if I could guess, if I could haven't gone that far, Claire. Nobody asked me, but I bet it's I bet it's Megan Rapino's fault.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, you see, I thought it was Sue's fault.

SPEAKER_04

I just think, and this is her fault. This is my bias creeping in. I think I think Sue Bird seems like the nicest person in America. She's like do no wrong energy to me.

SPEAKER_02

See, in their breakup video, Sue was composed and Megan, I felt sad energy. Well, I she said because she cheated on Megan and she feels better.

SPEAKER_04

She cheated.

SPEAKER_03

No, I'm kidding. I was gonna say, there's a quote from a couple years ago where Megan said if her and Sue ever broke up, she would be absolutely devastated.

SPEAKER_04

I did get a couple Megan Sue TikTok compilations, and I was like, damn, I'm targeted. And it they really made me sad. Aww.

SPEAKER_03

Did you guys I was thinking about this the other day. Sorry, this is completely off topic. Did you guys ever finish the four agreements?

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I I only made it two-thirds. Okay, okay. Or three fourths. I didn't finish the fourth agreement.

SPEAKER_02

You, yeah, Courtney was in at book club, but um it went well. I've read it. Fun. How many people did it? It was me and Al. We showed up and we had a great conversation. I missed it.

SPEAKER_04

Mary was in town that weekend, so I ended up canceling last minute.

SPEAKER_02

Honestly, I think that like it's less about I was just proud of myself. I was proud of myself for like making a plan and doing it and executing and showing up for myself. Like, really? As if you show up for yourself, there's like nothing cooler. Nothing cooler. I love that colour. Nothing cooler. Invite people in. But that's it. Um, okay. We are gonna go because Arizona needs to go spend some time outside, it sounds like. So love you, ladies and fellas. The boys are back. The boys are back.

unknown

Bye.
