If you’ve tried chiropractic, massage, supplements, or multiple therapies — and still feel like something is missing — this episode will help you understand why.

In this episode of Healing Beyond the Symptoms, Dr. Leah Hahn D.C., explains what makes Body in Balance Wellness Center in Golden, Colorado different — and why a nervous system-first approach is often the missing link in long-term healing.

Most healthcare models focus on symptoms:

  • pain
  • fatigue
  • anxiety
  • sleep issues

But symptoms are not the root problem.

They are signals from the nervous system.

At Body in Balance, care begins by understanding how your nervous system is functioning — whether it’s stuck in:

  • fight-or-flight (sympathetic activation)
  • dorsal vagal shutdown (disconnection, fatigue)

From there, care focuses on restoring communication between the brain and body so healing can actually occur.

In This Episode You’ll Learn:

• Why chasing symptoms often leads to short-term relief only
 • How nervous system dysregulation drives chronic symptoms
 • What makes Network Spinal care different from traditional chiropractic
 • Why gentle, trauma-informed care creates deeper healing
 • How safety allows the body to release stored stress patterns
 • Why healing is a lifestyle — not a quick fix
 • How awareness and mind-body connection accelerate recovery
 • Why symptoms are protective signals, not problems to eliminate

Peace, presence, and the ability to show up fully in their lives.

If you’ve felt stuck despite trying everything, this episode offers a new perspective:

Your body isn’t broken.
 It’s patterned.

And when the nervous system feels safe, those patterns can change.

You've probably seen chiropractors, massage therapists, taken lots of supplements, and you're still searching. So why is body imbalance different? Because we don't just chase symptoms. We help your nervous system finally feel safe enough to heal. Welcome to Healing Beyond the Symptoms, the podcast that helps people discover the root causes of their health struggles and take back control with science, strategy, and self-awareness. I'm Dr. Leah Hahn, a chiropractor and functional wellness doctor who believes that true healing starts beneath the surface. So let's dive in. So what we do at Body Imbalance is take a nervous system first approach. Most healthcare providers focus on symptoms: back pain, fatigue, anxiety, sleep struggles. At Body Imbalance, we start with the nervous system, the control center for all healing. We want to get to the root of your physiology. We want to understand if your body's stuck in a fight or flight state, if your body's stuck in that dorsal vagal system, we want to know where your system is functioning so we can truly understand what's happening in your physiology. And by addressing the patterns of stress and tension that block communication, that can block how the nerves are signaling from the brain to the body or giving information from the body to the brain, we help your body reconnect and regulate to move it into a state of healing. This doesn't mean that I don't care about your symptoms. I want to know what you're experiencing. I want to know when you started experiencing those symptoms. I want to know about different stressors that happened in your life. Maybe they were physical, maybe they were emotional, maybe they're traumas that really stick out to you that you remember and maybe you know they haven't been released. I want all of that history. I want all of that information. And even when I'm working with a patient on a regular basis, I want to know what their experience is because in the healing process, symptoms can emerge. And we want to take note of that and we want to put it into the whole picture of your healing process. One of the other things that makes us different is we practice gentle, trauma-informed care. There is no harsh jarring or cracking or twisting. In fact, there really is no force with the adjustment process. We use extremely light, very specific contacts on the body, specifically along the spine, that cue your nervous system to actually release stress and reorganize how the signaling patterns are working in your body. Gentle doesn't mean it's less effective. It's powerful because it creates so much safety within the nervous system. It puts the body in a state where it can heal, in a state where you could have awareness and mind-body connection instead of resistance. Many patients will tell me it feels so subtle, but the changes are profound. This is a common experience, but it takes body awareness, mind-body connection, safety, and reorganizing nervous system patterns. Realize that healing is a lifestyle. It's not a quick fix. We don't offer band-aid care. Our focus is long-term change, creating long-term resilience, not just short-term relief. That doesn't mean that network doesn't produce short-term relief. I just talked to a patient earlier today that I adjusted yesterday for the very first time. She has had chronic neck pain for the last 20 years. When she was finished with her first adjustment, she went home, had no neck pain, slept great through the evenings, felt like she had the deepest sleep that she had had in years, and woke up without neck pain. That's not everyone's experience, but network can produce short-term pain relief, but that's not our main goal. I love when that happens, but my main goal is that we can get to that deeper level of healing. We can get to the root issue, the root cause of what's happening within the body and address that. That's a longer-term process because most of the people that we work with have chronic issues, things that they've maybe dealt with since they were a child, a teenager. It started with a college injury or different traumas, emotional types of chronic stress that have happened to them throughout their lives. We also teach you how to listen to your body's signals so you can continue to heal outside the office. When a network adjustment takes place, that facilitates a healing process or initiates a healing process that's going to be happening for the next several hours. That creates this beautiful mind-body connection. What that sometimes means is that it increases your awareness of how you're standing, how maybe you're contributing to the tension patterns that your body is holding. Maybe you start to notice your thought patterns more deeply. Maybe there's a lot of negative thought patterns happening, or maybe the mind is way overactive and recycling the same lists of things to do or what's wrong with your life, or whatever it is, things that aren't contributing to your level of well-being. Maybe it's creating awareness that you haven't taken a deep breath in years, that you've been dealing with the shallow breath, dealing with this chronic level of tension within your system. I need you to be aware of that in order to heal. So I need that mind-body awareness to be amplified so that you can actually take notice, pause, and start to make changes within your life as well. Patients will share with me, I came in for pain, but what I got was peace, presence, and the ability to show up with my family, with my coworkers, with my friends in a whole new way. Even better, I showed up for myself in a whole new way. I was able to start to make decisions that honored my health and well-being as I went through my healing process. So as I created that awareness and I acknowledged the patterns that really came with that awareness, I started to make shifts and changes in my life that allowed me to honor myself, my boundaries, and my sense of well-being. At Body and Balance, we are a community that I hear all the time that feels like family. Healing isn't just about skill, it's about safety and trust. Our office is designed to feel nurturing, not clinical, not rushed. We listen deeply, we honor your story, and we walk with you step by step through the healing process. I work with patients in a variety of situations. I see a lot of clients for healing, deep healing that came to us with maybe things like foot pain or plantar fasciitis or shoulder pain or a neck injury, but they stick with the care at Bonnie Imbalance because they need that support and nervous system regulation. They feel so much peace as they go through the process. Because you're developing a sense of adaptability and resiliency, there are clients that start to notice big life shifts as they go through network spinal care. I have a client in particular that started this process because she just wanted some help with healing a chronic foot injury. She knew about network spinal. She knew it was something that would help her increase her healing capacity and her healing potential. But what happened and what unfolded through the process was she started to realize the impact of a deep trauma that had happened when she was in high school. That trauma had shaped her relationships. It had shaped her romantic relationships, her friendships. She had become very protective. She didn't even realize that that was her patterning until her body was in enough safety. So the foot pain had healed within a couple of weeks. But as she went through the process and started to develop more peace within her nervous system, she started to become aware of how, again, that patterning had shaped her life. And she was able to start making different choices. I love it when clients can combine talk therapy with network spinal. This client really needed to do that. She needed to do some talk therapy to process some of that patterning and some of her new acknowledgments and awareness. But then she combined that with network spinal to help her body move out of the fight or flight that had been created years and years ago that her body had held on to and start to move into that, again, state of safety and resiliency. So she could make other choices. It improved her relationships, it improved her friendships, it improved the relationships that she had with her family. And it was life-changing as she went through that process. That's what I want for everybody. Everyone has different goals, everyone has different needs that they need met through the healing process, but we want to make sure that each step along the way is supported in the process of nervous system healing as well. At Body in Balance, we are different because one, we start with the nervous system, not just the symptoms. We use gentle and trauma-informed care that works with your body. We focus on resilience and long-term transformation. We create a safe and family-like environment where you're truly cared for. Realize that your symptoms are not your enemy. They are your body trying to protect you. When we focus only on getting rid of symptoms, we often miss what they're trying to communicate. Symptoms are responses, they're intelligent adaptations created by your nervous system in the face of stress. Stress activates the nervous system, and the nervous system directs the body, the body expresses the symptom. And stress isn't just in your head, it's not simply a mindset. It's a physiological reaction often rooted in accumulated and unprocessed emotions and sensations that we have pushed down over time. External events don't create stress from nothing, they trigger what has already been stored, either consciously or unconsciously in the body. Healing isn't about forcing your body to stop reacting. It's about gently transforming what your body is reacting to. When something feels off, whether it shows up as anxiety or pain, fatigue, tension, shut down, or overwhelm, the body is speaking. These aren't failures, they're protective strategies. Nervous system dysregulation sits at the core of many chronic mind-body symptoms, regardless of the diagnosis that's attached to them. Labels like chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or IBS describe clusters of symptoms. They don't define your potential for healing. A diagnosis is simply the way your body's stress pattern has taken form, not a life sentence. These symptoms are messengers. They reflect deeper, often unacknowledged wounds. What triggers you can teach you. Instead of asking, how can I make this stop? Try asking, what is this revealing about me? True nervous system healing goes deeper than learning to calm down in a moment. It's not about suppressing emotions or overriding reactions. When stress responses repeat, they form patterns that live in the nervous system. Those patterns will continue to surface until the system learns a new way to adapt. When healing happens at a deeper level, something shifts. One, you respond differently, you experience stress differently. Your body feels safer even in challenge. And the beautiful part of this is it doesn't feel forced. You're not trying to breathe your way out of survival. You're not convincing yourself to calm down. You simply are. You are regulated, you are resilient, and you're at home in your body. And that's how body imbalance is different. We listen to the symptoms, we honor the body, and we facilitate the healing process.
