Hey everyone, welcome back to Coastal Living Waves, your weekly dive into the rhythms of Florida's shoreline. I'm Alec, and today we're talking about that golden brown visitor that's been showing up in force on our East Coast beaches, Sargassum. If you've been to Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Vero Beach, the Keys, or even farther north lately, you've probably seen it. Big rafts floating offshore, thick piles on the sand, and that unmistakable rotten egg smell when the sun hits it. Let's break it all down. What it actually is, why it's here in such big numbers, and most importantly, what you and I should do as beachgoers. First things first, sargassum is a free-floating brown seaweed. Two main species, sargassum natans and sargassum fluitans. It never roots to the bottom. Those little berry-like bladders keep it buoyant, so it drifts in big mats across the open ocean. Out there, it's actually a superstar. It creates floating nurseries for baby fish like Mahi Mahi and Jack's, safe havens for sea turtle hatchlings, and homes for crabs, shrimp, and seabirds. Scientists call it essential fish habitat for a reason. Historically, most of it hung out in the Sargasso Sea way out in the North Atlantic. But starting in 2011, something shifted. A massive formation called the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt began appearing every year, a ribbon of seaweed that can stretch more than 5,000 miles from West Africa all the way toward the Caribbean and the Gulf. Nutrient boosts from river runoff, agricultural fertilizer, Saharan dust, warmer water, and changing currents have supercharged its growth. In 2026, we're looking at another major year, tens of millions of metric tons floating around, with especially high amounts reported through June and into July. Here's how it reaches Florida's east coast. Currents carry it through the Caribbean, into the Gulf, then out through the Florida Straits. The Florida Current and Gulf Stream pull it north along our Atlantic shoreline. When the wind blows on shore and the tides cooperate, those mats get pushed right onto the beach. Southeast Florida and the keys take the heaviest hits, but patches show up farther north too. Peak season runs roughly spring through early fall, with June and July often the busiest. Now the reality check when it hits the sand. Fresh sargassum is golden and pretty harmless. Once it starts decomposing, it releases hydrogen sulfide, that rotten egg gas. It can irritate eyes, nose, and throat, especially if you already have asthma or other respiratory issues. Tiny critters living in the mats can cause skin irritation if you handle them. Big piles can also block sea turtle hatchlings from reaching the water and in the nearshore zone contribute to lower oxygen levels. So what should we do as beachgoers? 1. Check before you go. Look at the latest NOAA sargassum inundation risk maps or the University of South Florida's satellite outlooks. Local beach cams and county social media pages are gold. Conditions can change beach to beach and day to day. One stretch can be buried while the next is clear. 2. Protect yourself. If the smell is strong or you have breathing sensitivities, keep visits shorter or choose a different beach that day. Don't swim right through thick mats. Wear watershoes if you're walking through scattered seaweed. If you must move some by hand, use gloves, and never cook with it or bring large amounts home. It can hold heavy metals. 3. Be turtle smart. We're in nesting and hatching season right now, through October on most of the East Coast. Big piles make it harder for hatchlings. If you see turtles or nests, give them space and report any issues to local wildlife authorities. 4. Support the cleanup without making it worse. Many counties rake or remove sargassum daily, especially in high traffic spots. You can help by not adding trash to the piles and by following any posted guidelines. Hand raking small amounts is usually fine, but mechanical equipment has rules, especially during turtle season. Leave the heavy lifting to the pros when possible. And finally, keep perspective. Offshore, this seaweed is doing important work. Onshore in excess, it's a real nuisance for tourism, local businesses, and our enjoyment of the beach. Scientists are studying better forecasting, possible harvesting methods, and even beneficial uses like compost. In the meantime, a little planning goes a long way. That's the sargassum story for Florida's East Coast in 2026. It's part of our coastal reality now, but it doesn't have to ruin your day. Check the conditions, respect the ecosystem, and still get out there and enjoy the water when it's clear.
