Find out what vinyl I choose! Sonic Temple or Electric?
Hello everybody, this is Kyle Nelson with another episode of Hate to Rate, and today we are going to dive into the cult, formed in Bradford, England in April of 1983. The original members of the band are vocalist Ian Asbury, guitarist Billy Duffy, bassist Jamie Stewart, and drummer Ray Taylor Smith, known as Mondo. So let's go through some of their original names. The original name for the band was Southern Death Colt, formed in 1981, and later shortened to Death Colt in 1983 before finally becoming the Colt in January of nineteen eighty four. They had other members going in and out, there was definitely a change in members like Matt Sorum, drummer nineteen ninety nine to two thousand one, Les Warner drummer nineteen eighty five to nineteen eighty eight, Billy Morrison nineteen ninety nine to two thousand, he was the guitar player, John Tempesta, drummer since two thousand six, Eric Singer, drummer Chris Weiss, bass Martin Lanub Bass nineteen ninety nine to two thousand Mick Mickey Curry drummer nineteen ninety two to nineteen ninety three, Craig Adams bass nineteen ninety three to nineteen ninety five. Mark Wizicki drummer nineteen eighty five to nineteen ninety five. Charlie Jones apparently he is an actor now. Just as uh musician and songwriter James Cotot drummer He was also he also played for the Scorpions nineteen ninety six to two thousand six John Sinclair keyboardist Kidney Wolf bass John Webster keyboard Todd Huffman bass Scott Garrett drummer nineteen ninety three to nineteen ninety five and yeah that's the members throughout uh the cult. So it looks like the primary songwriters for the band, the British rock band, the cult, Ian Asbury, and the guitarist Bill Duffy, major songwriting for a lot of their songs. She sells Sanctuary, Firewoman, and Love Removal Machine. Co-writing shared to other members such as bassist Craig Adams and Universally You. So it looks like it was a bunch of partnership from other members of the band The Colt. So let's check out their first. I'm gonna go with their first single, I would say, um, would be Resurrection Joe. The music video is pretty cool on this one. Uh I actually thought Flea was in it, but Flea apparently was not in this video. Had Resurrection Joe, Resurrection Joe long version, Resurrection Joe, Hepcat long version in 1984, Banger's Banquet Records, LTD, The Cult, and so let's go to their first album, The Cult Dreamtime, with songs on it like Horse Nation, Spirit Walker, 83rd Dream, Butterflies, Go West, Gimmick, A Flower in the Desert, Dreamtime, Rider in the Snow, Bad Medicine Waltz, this was also Banger's Banquet, Records. So the songs I chose on there were as Spirit Walker, Go West, and Dream Time. I'd say altogether a pretty good album. So overrated and underrated songs. Overrated, I'd probably say Dream Time. And then underrated, I would say Go West. Then we have with the Colts the album Love in 1985, with songs on it like Nirvana, Big Neon Glitter, Love, Brother Wolf, Sister Moon, Rain, Phoenix, Hollow Man, Revolution, She Sells Sanctuary, and Black Angel. This was Banger Banquet Records. And the songs I chose were Love, Rain, and She Sells Sanctuary. The songs overrated, underrated on this album, I would actually say overrated was She Sells Sanctuary. Underrated Ooh. Actually for another overrated one, I would say Brother Wolf, Sister Moon. That's a little overrated. Underrated, I would say Nirvana. That one was actually pretty cool live from their other versions that they have live. Then honestly, I think this one would take the vinyl. This one would take the cake on this one. Um this one is Electric in 1987 with songs on it like Wildflower, Peace Dog, Little Devil, Aphroditek, Jacket, Electric Ocean, Bad Fun, King Contrary Man, Love Removal Machine, Born to Be Wild, that's a cover, Outlaw, Memphis Hip Shake. And I really like this one, but this one is uh Bangers Banquet Records again, and the songs that I chose on there were Wildflower, Little Devil, King Contraryman, Love Removal Machine, Born to Be Wild. I did like their version. And overrated, underrated, um, overrated? I would have to say Love Removal Machine. A little overrated. Um, underrated? I'm gonna do a song I didn't pick. I was gonna say Little Devil, but I would say that would be more underrated. Uh I would say Electric Ocean. I kind of really like that one, and I didn't pick that one, but I would say that is the underrated song. So yeah, this one would have to go vinyl for me. I would choose the next one that's coming up, but they released an anniversary on this one. In 2019, they actually uh remastered this version. It's like a 30 anniversary edition, and it's kind of cool they had songs that would have like made it on the album, and like demo songs, and I just like their version so much better. This is uh a pretty good one. Uh they kind of ended it with a live version, which was kind of weird, but it'd be good to have it in a vinyl like this whole set. But getting ahead of myself, let's go to the Sonic Temple 1989, with songs on it like Sun King, Firewoman, American Horse, Eddie, Soul Sister, Soul Asylum, New York City, Atomic Blues, Soldier Blue, Wake Up Time for Freedom, Medicine Train And this was Bangers Banquet Records Again. The songs I added were Firewoman, Sweet Soul Sister, New York City, and Wake Up Time for Freedom. Overrated to underrated, I'd say overrated would have to be the Firewoman. And then Underrated, I'd say Sweet Soul Sister. That one could be played a little more. I mean, I'm pretty sure they played the hell out of it back in its era. But jumping on to that side note of that Sonic Temple, the 30th anniversary edition, honestly, I'm gonna go through the songs I actually picked that they could have like added to the album and it would have made it better, and I probably would have got it as a vinyl if they would have just added these songs. So the ones I added on here were messing up the blues, that was pretty cool, like that blues song. Um the Eddie song, but this was acoustic, like that version better, and then Yes Man Demo, that was a pretty good song on that on their demo. Now chose Star Child, another demo, that was really good, and the rest of them were just kind of a live version. Honestly, if they would have put that in their Sonic Temple or made a deluxe of the Sonic Temple, maybe a year after that, that would be great. So then in 1991, we have Ceremony, and this album got a lot of heat, like uh there was a lawsuit against them. So the band the Colt got sued for 61 million in the early 1990s. Ogala Sue Boy featured on their 1991 ceremony album cover and Wild Hearted Sun music video. The lawsuit alleged photos used without permission. Okay, they did what didn't have permission to use the photos, causing a cultural distress, resulting in the delay of the album and release, dealing with legal battles. Ultimately it was dismissed. It was thrown out. So yeah. Let's hit him where it hurts. Let's fucking let's hit him with a million. And uh the songs on it were ceremony, Wild Hearted Sun, Earth Mofo, White, If, Full Tilt, Heart of Soul, Bangkok Rain, Indian, Sweet Salvation, and Wonderland. This was Banger's Banquet Records again. And then they kind of just ride on this Indian theme with their self-claimed album, The Colt. It has an American flag with a Native American on it. And the songs, it's pretty short. I don't even know why they put it on their album list, but they did. Uh I would have put this on the EP or singles list, but songs on it like Down on the Street, Go Go Goro, The Witch, remixed. And this just says Sonic Book 1994. We have another self-acclaimed album with the cold the cold. This one has like a goat head, a black goat, and it has like four horns. It's kind of cool looking. Um, with songs on it like Gone, Coming Down, Drug Tongue, Real Girl, Black Sun, Naturally High, Joy, Star, Sacred Life, Be Free, Universally You, Empire's New Horse, Saints Are Down. This was also a Banger's Banquet Records. The song I chose on there were real grree and universally you. Overrated to underrated, uh I don't know. I don't think this album gets much like he. Maybe overrated would have to be coming down. And underrated, I would have to say. Maybe be free. I'm gonna go with be free. This is a pretty cool album, too. This next one, this one was hard. I almost wanted this one too, in a vinyl. This one was uh 2001, Beyond Good and Evil, with songs on it like War, The Process, The Saint, Rise, Take the Power, Breathe, Nico, American Gothic, Ashes and Ghosts, Shape the Sky, Speed of Light, True Believers, My Bridges Burn. And this was Atlantic Recording Corporation of the United States and WEA International Incorporated, for the world outs outside of the United States. The songs I chose were Rise, Take the Power, Breathe, American Gothic, Speed of Light, and My Bridges Burn. Overrated to Underrated, I would say overrated would have to be Rise. Underrated, I would say Take the Power. Take that power. You cult. Follow that cult. Then Born Into This in 2007 with songs like Born into This, Citizens, Diamonds, Dirty Little Rock Star, Holy Mountain, I Assassinate, Luminate, Tiger in the Sun, Savages, Sound of Destruction, Standalone, Warpony, Destroyer, I Assassin, Demo, Sound of Destruction, Demo, Savages, Extended. And this was uh the all black BV issued under license to Roadrunner, actually. This one's a Roadrunner one. Huh. The songs I picked were Diamonds, Dirty Little Rockstar, Savages, and I liked one of their demos, which was Sound of Destruction. Overrated to underrated, I would say overrated would have to be Dirty Little Rockstar. Underrated would have to be I would say Savages. Let's go Savages. And this one has a cool art. I just like this one again with their Native American theme, but he's wearing like a war suit almost, and the album's called Choice of Weapon in 2012 with songs like Honey from a Knife, Internal Light, The Wolf, Death Life Greater Than Death for the Animals, Anesthesia, Wilderness Now, Lucifer, A Pale Horse, This Night In the City Forever This was the Colt Recording. They must have self court self-recorded this one. And the songs I picked were Honey from a Knife, The Wolf for the Animals, and Lucifer. Overrated to underrated, um I would say overrated is maybe the wolf. Underrated, I would say definitely Lucifer. That one's a pretty cool song. And then we have Hidden City in 2016 with songs on it like Dark Energy, No Love Lost, Dance the Night, In Blood, Birds of Paradise, Hinderland, G-O-A-T, Goat, Deeply Ordered Chaos, Avalanche of Light, Lilies, Heathens, Sound and Fury. This was also another cult recording ink. And the songs I picked were No Love to Lose, Hinderland, and I Did Like Heathens. Overrated to underrated for this one. Uh definitely overrated would have to be Hinderland. Um have to be Heathens. I would have to go for Heathens. And then their last known album in 2022 with Under the Midnight Sun with songs on it like Mir, A Cut Inside, Vendetta X, Give Me Mercy, Outer Heaven, Knife Through, Butterfly Heart, Impearance, Under the Midnight Sun. This was uh Black Hill Records. Then they also do have a new single. This one is Death Colt 8323 singles with songs on it like C-O-T-A and then Flesh and Bone. This was also a Black Hill Records. The songs I picked were just Flesh and Bone. But it looks like they're sounding good. And they also got a few live albums. Uh the first live one from London, the MCMXCI. I picked the song uh Nirvana Live. That was pretty cool live. I think that's it for this one. This one had like quite a bit of feedback. I don't know if it was their amps or whatever is going on in there, but there's quite a bit of feedback in that one. And then their second like album was like 1996. It was Live At it was their dream time one. And I didn't add any in this one. But uh what I would like to see from the Colts is uh honestly another live album. Like do some more live album from the albums in the 2000s, I would say. Just kind of spark that up from even if you start with like 2001 to like 20 2022, that would be a great good start for the colt. I would like to see the colt. I don't know, they're like Danzig mixed in with a little meatloaf. I don't know, if meatloaf and danzic had a baby, you'd pop out a colt. Oh yeah, and this shout-out episode goes to my dad. Thank you. Love you. And I think you know I would have liked him because I listened to Danzik. So I had to look up did the colt get inspiration from Danzik? Or better known, and probably in around that time, the mist bits. And apparently there's no direct uh evidence that the colt was directly inspired by Glenn Danzig. Even though they're like kind of the same genre, they're like dark gothic themed. So there you have it. There's another episode of Hate to Rate, and I'll see you guys next time on the next episode. Thank you.
