Alright, we are back with another episode of Hate to Rate. I'm your host Kyle Nelson, and today we are going to dive into Oliver Tree. Darling, I don't have mind control. Born in Santa Cruz, California in 1993, we have American singer, songwriter, producer, and performing artist, known for his internet comedy with indie pop, hip hop, and alternative rock, he rose viral fame in 2016 with his track When I'm Down. His signature bowl cut and oversized Windbreaker. Yeah, that is an understatement. This guy looks like Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber, if he would have just had a persona and did music. So Oliver Tree begins his music journey early. So he was classically trained on piano just at the age of three years old. No way? He wrote his first album by the age of six. Yeah, was that ABC's? But anyway, diving on to more earlier stuff of Oliver Tree. So looking into his older stuff, I would have been a pretty good fan of his older stuff if he just continued with his older stuff or died out from his older stuff, became like a pro scooter rider or whatever. But I did get duked online. So basically I was asking Google, you know, what was his previous name, what was his previous side project's name. Google just said simply tree. Looked it up, couldn't find Simply Tree anywhere. And as for Irony, the first one he was in, uh where he played guitar and sang, couldn't find anything on that. And Crib uh was not really his Atlas, it was more or less an album. And it wasn't really dubstep, it was he was still continuing the same style. If anything, I can go into him really quick. So in 2013, Mr. Tree, with uh this one's just called uh it was when I looked up in Google it was splitting branches, but uh this one's just splitting with songs on it like Tolly, Artemisha, Revival, from Reds to Blue, Warrior, This Is Separation, Universal, Sacred Elements, Stuck Down the Wrong Rabbit Hole. And this was MetTech Industries LTD. And the songs I chose were as Artemisha from Reds to Blue, The Separation, and Sacred Elements. Then we go on to the Criff album in 2014 with songs on it like Once It's Gone and Apology, Worldwide, Smellulator, Session, Gaining Momentum, Your Entire Life in a Song. And this was just as Oliver Tree. So he probably self-produced it, self-recorded this album. And this kind of sounds like, I don't know, like 21 Pilots when they were a trio. Like I could imagine him evolving into something like this. I mean it's not bad, not horrible. It's like actually pretty good. I mean, I'm I'm a fan of Oliver Tree, like all around. Everything he made so far, I liked it, even some of his features. More of a fan of his earlier stuff, but in this new album he had, this recent one, it came pretty clutch on his I would say his prime almost on what Oliver Tree is. We have Oliver Tree's father is Jesse L. Nickel III. He's a retired senior vice president for design and construction firm of Swanson. His mother's identity remains private, though the artist occurs making jokes, interviews, claims his parents were circus transp artists. So that was a joke. I thought they actually owned uh a circus. It was not that. He's a former in real estate development public office based in Santa Cruz, California. He's retired. He's also a musician too. I couldn't find really any of his music, but I seen he played uh the accordion. Honestly, when I first heard of Olive Tree, it was probably back in like 2018, but he didn't have an album, he just had a bunch of singles. And so his first single is When I'm Goin' Down in 2016, and then his second one in 2017 with All I Ever Talk About, third one is Welcome to LA in 2017, All I Got in 2017, Cheapskate in 2017, then Enemy in 2017, Upside Down in 2018, All That in 2018, such a good song, Movement, 2018, then Alien Boy, 2018, then he comes out with a single Hurt in 2018 also. This one, I don't know why I didn't make it, but this one's fuck. This one is 2019, another single. So yeah, that kind of plays out. And before I get too heavy into this, so I was looking at like what is Oliver Tree, you know, it's a solo project, you know, created from him, but he does have artists that come in doing, you know, producing or instrument, uh turbo, Shandy Bravo, and Cornelius Cummings, and those guys will come in and out of his albums, you know, throughout the years that he's doing it. Casey Mattenson is also brought up. He's guitar, bass, keys, appears in TurboClone, um, just a bunch of characters that just come in randomly doing music. He also has a bunch of features he does. So I did look up what is his whole fetish with the scooter thing. His scooter riding background is a part of his significant internet persona. While he's deeply associated with scootering, frequently riding them in music videos and performing world record stunts. He competitively BMX ride his youth. So he's a BMX rider in his youth, then professional scooter came after. Uses a scooter, signature bowl cut, windbreaker, to troll the audience. Though he does perform some of his own stunts and even built the world largest scooter. That's crazy. He built and it's kinda apparent on uh if you look up the hurt music video, he has the big scooter, it's like he's almost crucified on a fucking scooter. For complex professional level tricks, he replies on he relies on professional stunt doubles in some of his music videos, that makes sense. So yeah, he just does a scooter boner. One of them uh scooter boners. You know, when you see a scooter, you just get a scooter boner. So there is some interesting facts about his haircut. Uh there's only a haircut I've had my whole entire life. To be honest, it was too scary to get any other hairstyle. So he's scared to get any other hairstyle. So it stuck with me. I remember one time at the barber shop tried to give me another haircut when I was six. I started crying and ran away mid haircut. So he stuck with the bowl cut. So apparently he's been involved in several documented incidents. Most nobly served life-changing scooter crash during his senior year of high school where he broke both of his wrists and his hand. So that's kind of what ended his professional scooter career. And it looks like he went back to music after the whole injury. Attempting to break a Guinness world record by riding the world's largest scooter. His stunt resolved in major crash, required full Ooh, he had to do surgery, leaving him broken nose, multiple fractures on his face, and required 32 stitches on his chin. Wow. So one of his incidents was in one of the music videos hurt when he was riding his world record, fucking the world's largest scooter. He crashed it. Hope it was worth it, bud. Alright, let's uh let's dive into this guy's music, shall we? Alright, we got into his singles. Now he made his first album in 2020 with Ugly Is Beautiful. First song on it is Me, Myself, and I. 1933 featuring Little Ricky, ZR3, Cash Machine, Let Me Down, Miracle Man, Bury Me Alive. This one's funny. Uh on the music videos, he has balls on his chin. Gotta check that one out. Alien Boy, this was one of his original first singles. He had mixed together with another song. Uh Jokes on You Again and Again, Waste My Time, Jerk, Hurt, Introspective, I'm Gone. This was Alanic Recording Corporation. And the songs I chose were Cash Machine, Let Me Down, Miracle Man, Bury Me Alive, Alien Boy, Jokes on You, Jerk, and Hurt. This was a really good album. I probably would choose this one. This one is more of raw, what he was doing with all singles, and then just made it into an album. So I would probably pick this as a vinyl, his first one. Moving on, this one's a little weird because I remember it being just Cowboy Tears, but he has one before it. Cowboy Tears drowned the world in a swimming pool of sorrow. Deluxe. So I'm gonna chalk this up as like kind of two albums. So I'm gonna go tell it continues the other album. Because they kind of collabed it with the other album and it just gets confusing from there. So in 2022, we have I Hate You, Peaceholder, Mind Control, There you are, baby, Wasteland, Battleship, Sunshine, Replacement, Oxymoron, Crash Test Dummy, The Exploding Man, AOK. So this one I would chalk up as this album. The songs I chose were I Hate You, Peaceholder, Mind Control, Sunshine, Replacement, Crash Test Dummy, and AOK. So Overrated and Underrated from the Ugliest Beautiful, I would say overrated would have to be I'd say Hurt. Hurt's kind of a little overplayed. Underrated, I would say Let Me Down or Miracle Man, possibly even Cash Machine. Like this album's like really good. This guy can turn a bunch of stuff into gold. And overrated and underrated song with Cowboy Tears, The World in a Swimming Pool of Sorrow. Um Overrated would have to be I would say Sunshine. Underrated song would have to be Mind Control. Definitely. The songs I added was I Hate You, Pleaseholder, Mind Control, Sunshine, Replacement, Crash Test Dummy, and AOK. This was Atlantic Recording Corporation again. Then moving on to his other album, same year, 2022. This one is Cowboy Tears. I remember this one being after Ugly is Beautiful, but he must have put some in between from there. So with songs on it like Cowboys Don't Cry, Swing in a Miss, Get Well Soon, Freaks and Geeks, Dormat, Suitcase Full of Cash, Cigarettes, Balloon Boy, Things We Used to Do, California, Playing with Fire, The Villain, and Cowboy Tears. Overrated, underrated, I would have to say Overrated would have to be maybe Cowboy Tears. No, let's say Cowboys Don't Cry. Underrated song would either be Freaks and Geeks or Swingin' a Miss. The songs I picked were Cowboys Don't Cry, Swingin' a Miss, Freaks and Geeks, Cigarettes, Things We Used to Do, Playing with Fire, and Cowboy Tears. I did like that song. This was also Atlantic Recording Corporation. And then we have Alone in a Crowd 2023. This guy just keeps going. He just keeps going with his albums, doesn't stop. First song, Bounce, One and Only. Highlight of My Life The First Night. Strangers. I don't think there is an overrated, underrated song. I feel like this album hasn't been played enough. But this was also Atlantic Records Corporation. The songs I picked were Bounce, One and Only, Star, Fair Weather Friends, Smile, Highlight of My Life. And that's about it on that one. All the all really good album. This one was more basier. This one was like I don't know if you're playing it in a car, like you bounce almost with this one. This was almost the base bouncy album, I would say. Then his recent album he just came out with is Love You Madly, Hate You Badly. 2026. This was in April of 24 and with songs on it like My Only Friend, I Need You Glow On Sideways, Hey Shorty, Fuck the Whole World, Superhero, Death Ray, Dirty, Deep End, Joyride, Crazy, Someone Else, Halo, All I Ever Wanted, Flowers How It Ends. It doesn't say who produced this album either. So it could have been just his own production, actually. Like it just doesn't say anything. I remember him fighting with his record label to get this one out. He had to get a bunch of fans together, sign a petition pretty much, just to get this album out. Pretty cool. Uh overrated, underrated. Uh it's kinda too new for that. But I guess he did advertise fuck the whole world, so I'd say that one would be overrated. Underrated would have to be Oh, let's do one of his last ones. Maybe Flowers. I'm gonna say flowers. Uh the songs I added were My Only Friend, I Need You, Sideways, Hey Shorty, Fuck the Whole World, Dirty, Joyride, Crazy, Someone Else, Flowers, and How It Ends. Honestly, I'd if I seen this one in a vinyl, I'd probably pick up this one too. This one is almost his prime of what Oliver Tree does in his music. Um, his music videos you gotta check out. Like I can tell you which one was the better one, which one was worse the better. It was all good. It was all his persona, he dresses up for his character. The evolution of his music is just crazy, like when he started, even when he was doing his darker hip-hop stuff as Mr. Tree or Tree as it is. Uh just some of the comments and some of the videos, like one of his music videos, older music video, probably one of his first, it was uh tree, and the song was called uh Karma Police. Some of the comments are on there where like he's good, he should do songs with Oliver Tree. Okay, um, do a little research, he is Oliver Tree. I know I've talked about getting the first vinyl, uh, Ugly is beautiful, or Love You Madly, Hate You Badly. Like those two, but if I had to pick one, toss up, I'd probably pick his first one more than anything. This one's good, but nothing beats that OG. Even if he did all his like singles and put them together in like one big collaboration, that would be a cool and a vinyl too. It's just he's a really amazing artist, and I hope he continues to make more music. Nonetheless, this has been good digging into Oliver Tree and his family and just his weirdness that he does. I mean, you gotta check him out. He's really good. Every music he made I have not been disappointed in, and the songs just get caught in your head. There are sticky songs in your head. So, thank you for joining me on another episode of Hate Trade. This has been your host, Kyle Nelson, and have a good day, good night, wherever you are. Bye. I just found out that uh Oliver Tree just died on June 14th, 2026, at the age of 32, a mid-air helicopter collision in Rio de Jaro, Brazil. He was one of the six casualties in the crash, which occurred during the world's first tour that he was had going on. So all six individuals involved in the crash perished. Tree traveled in one helicopter with four others while the second aircraft was operating alone by the pilot. And honestly, I just got done editing this episode. Even had to go back and redo his older stuff and put that in my episode, and no, just found out he died. So, um let's give him a moment of silence. Uh after the collision, the aircraft plummeted into a dealership parking lot, sparking a fire that destroyed electric vehicles. So Oliver Tree was in the crash, uh Gasper Prim, or Gaspi. He's a YouTuber and influencer. Lucas Bignale, filmmaker and director. Lucas Bruto Shaves, Brazilian DJ and music producer, Alexander Susa, pilot, Charles Marsilk, pilot. Um it's still an ongoing investigation. The police of Rio de Jaro and the CENIPA have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision, individuals, indicators mentioned by police suggest potential human error, though official forensic reports are pending. So I was curious about the record label and why he departed from Atlantic Records. Basically it was creative control, lack of marketing support, and the label's pressure to create viral TikTok songs rather than full development albums, which she was wanting. And he stated how we made him like tens of millions of dollars. But this is like two weeks after he disassociated himself, is not working with Atlantic Records. Then I had to look into the helicopters, like who owned the helicopters and what's the odds of honestly hitting another helicopter, let's be real here. So I had to look into the helicopter, and the one that Oliver Tree was on, and the YouTuber, they were on a Brazilian helicopter that was owned by Brazil's star VIP and HelpVib. Yeah, the exact owner of the second helicopter is unconfirmed. So a little fishy there. So the chances of hitting a helicopter hitting another helicopter in the air. It's a one in a million chance to one in ten million per flight hour. Like who's flying where. So it's basically they gotta see they gotta see and observe other aircrafts pretty much in their airway. Another thing was odd, about two months ago he changed his will. Instead of going to his family, the inheritance is going to his kids, so they get paid for college at least and their schooling. But the rest of his music is going to Oliver Tree's art grants for baby geniuses. Okay, I guess if you uh can make your whole album by time you're six. The helicopter thing, it's just all fishy. The switching over is will, the whole he's bashing on his record label and then leaves it and then independently, you know, just fires out his last album. Yeah, do your own research. Look into it, it's pretty fishy. That's it. I'm gonna close this uh episode out with this. Hopefully your music will live on and on and on and on and yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
