Joanne Harris (OBE, FRSL) was born in Barnsley in 1964 to a French mother and English father. A Cambridge graduate, she taught for 15 years before publishing Chocolat (1999), later adapted into an Oscar-nominated film. Since then, she has written over 20 novels, as well as novellas, short stories, screenplays, game scripts, operas, a stage musical, and cookbooks. Her work, translated into 50+ languages, has won numerous international awards. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and honorary Fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, she has also chaired the Society of Authors and served on the ALCS board. Passionate about authors’ rights, she continues to write from her shed in Yorkshire, where she also plays in the band she first joined at 16.
