Welcome to Booked All Night, the podcast where hot takes me craft notes and no one gets enough to play. I'm Jeff.
IntroI'm Julia. I'm Maggie. Get ready for on his hot takes. A whole lot of fun, midnight giggles, and zero shit.
SPEAKER_04Wrap your blankets, booklets. It's time to get booked all night. So welcome to booked all night movie night. We're your hosts, Jess, Julia, Maggie. And tonight we're watching Catching Fire. Tonight's episode needs to be played alongside the movie. We are obviously not showing the movie. We are not important enough to have such copyright uh abilities. So we will tell you when to hit play, when to pause, etc. And the only time that we will pause, as shown in the last time we did this, will be when I yell about the bullshit bus stop that is the cornucopia. Does anybody have anything to add before we upload the business?
SPEAKER_05We'll be uploading pictures of bus stops to prove that bus stops don't look like the cornucopia at a later date.
SPEAKER_04I will start an argument on the internet about how this thing looks like a fucking bus stop. But that's all.
SPEAKER_07I am ready. Play. Oh yeah, do we have captions on?
SPEAKER_04As uh every single book nerd knows, I can't hear without my captions.
SPEAKER_07Color force. I'm just gonna do bullshit like this the entire episode. It's gonna be fun. Sunrise. But not yet on the reaping. Aha.
SPEAKER_04God, her knees being in that crouched position. Right. How long do you think they like spent on that shot? Like, do you think do you think Jennifer's knees are actually just blown? No, shoot him, fuck Gail.
SPEAKER_07Was it you? You fucking turkey. Do you think that's a metaphor?
SPEAKER_04Why is this like so cringy awkward to watch? I don't I don't remember this scene being so like I wanna vomit cringe in the book. Oh, okay, it was, says producer Rob. I'm just you know, my memory is shot from years of caffeine abuse.
SPEAKER_05I think it's I think it's more awkward now.
SPEAKER_04See that rock?
SPEAKER_05Which rock? Oh no. Oh boy, it's just me all by myself. Uh oh. Oh no.
SPEAKER_07Here come the turkeys. Oh no, not Jeff Queen!
SPEAKER_04I will say I I love how they did this portion of it and like the PTSD throughout the book, and even the inclusion of some of it in the movie, because in Divergent there was also PTSD, but they like they got to the second movie and they were like, we're gonna do this once and then never again.
SPEAKER_05I don't like for some reason how her hair is so done in this one.
SPEAKER_04Well, she's about to like go on cameras and stuff, right?
SPEAKER_05Oh, did someone like okay, I guess. But like she's gotta get home and the people will like dress her up. Did her hair just change? Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Can we talk about the abomination that is her knitted shawl wrap thing?
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, I wanted that so bad when I was little.
SPEAKER_04I still kind of want one, but it is in fact an abomination. But I just want to wear it because in winter you're allowed to wear ugly clothes.
SPEAKER_05I wish it fit her.
SPEAKER_07The bottom is too big.
SPEAKER_04Now, of course, we're not getting a full body shot, so I can't even argue with you on it. Oh no, they can't! Ew.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah, yeah, let's see.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, except for the fact that they are like literally out in the open and anybody could see this. Four people just walked by. Yeah. You know what it's like? You guys ever play Skyrim and you get reported for thieving for like thievery by a horse because the the animals see you? Goddamn chickens. Yeah, those goddamn chickens. That goddamn cat.
SPEAKER_05The fuck kind of knock was that? She knocks like that.
SPEAKER_02She's like she went like her whole palm.
SPEAKER_05Like almost broke the door.
SPEAKER_07No, Hamid's sleepy. Goosebumpy awkward. Yeah, a walk. A walk that you took. The walk hurt us. The walk that everyone believes was definitely a walk. Love him, but hate him, but love him. Yes. Such bravery. He's like, bitch, where did you get the audacity?
SPEAKER_05And then looks at her scarf.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. He's like, good, we'll both be autistic together.
SPEAKER_06Autistic sociopaths together.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like, yes, absolutely.
SPEAKER_07You're the one that let the bee in the arena.
SPEAKER_04Six feet under Is he is he by chance in a different movie franchise now? Because I haven't seen him since.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's roping cattle. No, he's the lawyer with the family. Is that what do you say when? Never mind. Doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_07Oh. Oh, he's in Yellowstone. How dare a girl specifically from District Twelve Micro? What a weird, creepy way to say that.
SPEAKER_04Convince me. Does anybody else think it's like especially weird that he's like so I'm like eighty years old, but I really want to see these two teenagers smash, even though they might not like each other?
SPEAKER_05Is it that weird? Given this economy.
SPEAKER_04This specific economy.
SPEAKER_02Is it? Is it that weird?
SPEAKER_04I'm it you know, possibly not, which makes it that much more strange.
SPEAKER_07Oh my god, I love her coat.
SPEAKER_04I love the doily that she is wearing, and I want to know. My grandmother has the same doily on her coffee table. Right, I'm pretty certain there's one just like it on my dining room table that was my grandmother's What's gonna happen to Cinnamon?
SPEAKER_07Brutalize a tube.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, everybody ready to watch that in Crystal Clear HD?
SPEAKER_06You guys are getting HD? I'm getting 420p, maybe.
SPEAKER_04What I really wish for our whole discussion series is that I could get that specific music and legally use it for the whole season. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I don't like his eyebrows in this one.
SPEAKER_04You say that and then it goes out, and now I can't see his eyebrows.
SPEAKER_05We must feed the monster. Interesting.
SPEAKER_04Oh, well, we weren't in an ugly enough sweater, so let's get this vest.
SPEAKER_06Let's get this actual like wet dog fur suit.
SPEAKER_04Right? See my vest, see my vest made from real gorilla chest.
SPEAKER_07And then we we get a smile, uh huh.
SPEAKER_03The baker boy. Everybody scream, the baker's boy.
SPEAKER_04How square do you have to make your mouth to like make that noise?
SPEAKER_07The baker's boy. Yeah, we're married and we're making babies.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I guess.
SPEAKER_07That's so awkward. Well, they are children.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, she does call them children. But uh yeah, they're 17. They are still children. Sorry to all the 17-year-olds that might be watching, but you are in fact a child.
SPEAKER_05And hang on to that for as long as possible. Is that a man wearing lime green pants?
SPEAKER_04Don't be don't be judging, Hamage. He can wear lime green pants.
SPEAKER_06The AVOX behind him.
SPEAKER_04Listen, the Avox lost his tongue, not his fashion sense. Okay, so apparently he lost both. No. Lime green pants. I'm here for it. Okay, boomer. I'm not a boomer.
SPEAKER_05I never got to see the pants. Yeah, I didn't notice that. No, we don't want to stop. Not for pants. Not for pants. For a bus stop, yes. For pants.
SPEAKER_04No one stops for pants, producer Rob. I love this scene in this car. So, like when uh when we graduated, Maggie and I took a train trip around the country, and the train we were on had this viewing car like this. Yeah. Where you could just go in and sit and watch. Like, it was so beautiful.
SPEAKER_05I've always wanted to be in one. I think it would be so pretty.
SPEAKER_04They're really pretty and relaxing and great to sleep in when people in your cabin uh snore like chainsaws. Or walk in at four in the morning and scream at the top of the lungs.
SPEAKER_02There's no saints in here.
SPEAKER_04I will never forgive that woman. Never. Or the one that came in later that was like, this is Ohio.
SPEAKER_06To be fair, we were in Ohio for like an additional four hours because there was an accident on the train tracks.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's right, that's right. Now the accident on the train tracks is these two.
SPEAKER_05I like I like you bringing it back. Great job.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07How profession.
SPEAKER_05Why didn't they fix her hair?
SPEAKER_07Black like my soul. No, orange that exists in nature, not like Effie's hair. Zip zap. Zip zap series logo. Zip zap zap. Oh no.
SPEAKER_04That's it for the rest of the movie. We're just playing zip zap zap.
SPEAKER_05Oh no, it's hard enough when you're in front of people.
SPEAKER_04Everyone will love that for the next two and a half hours.
SPEAKER_06Is her hair orange? It's more like a peach. Yeah, I would call that like bottle blonde. I wouldn't even call that orange. I agree. I would call that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I would say peach. Or at the very least, um, a bad peace job. Like not a bottle blonde, but a an 80-year-old penis?
SPEAKER_05That's wild.
SPEAKER_07Penis? Pianist with a T. And Pita Malak.
SPEAKER_04Now I know that the tour, like, it's supposed to start in District 12 and then go through the rest of the districts up to the Capitol. But it feels so pointed directly at them and her, where it's like, let's start with the two most traumatic and personal deaths. Uh, so you can look directly into the eyes of the people that lost their loved one and their little child that you were trying to protect and uh go protect yourself.
SPEAKER_07He put down the cards. Oh my god, Effie.
SPEAKER_05I forgot, like I feel like it's been so long since we read the first chapter that I forgot that this is how this book starts. Because the end is so far from the beginning.
SPEAKER_04It's it is right, though the book starts, uh it's the midway point in the year between the games.
SPEAKER_05Like wow, okay.
SPEAKER_04And the games the reaping is on July 4th. So the the game's directly in July, so the this is like what January, February.
SPEAKER_05But it yeah, just everything that's like happening compared to everything that where we get to at the end, this seems so Yeah. I don't want to say minor, but they're so emotionally bothered by this, and it's like don't worry, there's so much more to come.
SPEAKER_04This I think in comparison, especially to the first book and like the narrative of it, so much got crammed into catching fire. Agreed. And at the same time, I it's it's the same pacing, right? Like like you s you start here with this thing, and by the back half you're in the games officially, and it's very weird to think that there's so much more involved here than there was in the first one. Everybody like to be uh just stabbed in the heart by by music, because here it comes. And the scenery along with it.
SPEAKER_07And the look on that man's face, like he knew that that would be the punishment for that. See, Effie sees that though.
SPEAKER_05She doesn't see it in the books. They keep it from her. They tell them not to that's yeah.
SPEAKER_04This is one of the like the big emotional things that I remember from the series. Where he's just like, it is hard truth time. Like, you know, the thing that you created in the arena to get yourself sponsors, the things that like the lies that you told, that's who you are now. You have no other choice. There is no escape.
SPEAKER_07Now come to mama. Let mama give you a hug. Sir, you cannot be making that promise. Now kiss.
SPEAKER_04I'm glad for like the sequence that they show the people just glaring at them. Like, how dare you?
SPEAKER_07I think it's interesting that they showed women. Keep reading. Yeah. She learned how to read yesterday.
SPEAKER_04She learned how to read in a freshman level public speaking class.
SPEAKER_07I get them too, and then I paint them in beautiful landscapes. Yeah, but just as friends.
SPEAKER_03With benefits. Just the friend that I with cuddle benefits.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the friend that the the benefit is the benefit is my company and conversation only, because we're talking about.
SPEAKER_08She has a a bedroom knit shirt and an outdoor knit shirt.
SPEAKER_07It's in it's important to have these distinctions. Pan em tomorrow, Panam Forever.
SPEAKER_04With a half-hearted smile. It's interesting. Sorry, yeah, that smile she gives there is like what you give after the dentist when your mouth is still numb and you can't quite control the lift.
SPEAKER_07Interesting. The quiet rage. No, because if only one of us owned it and could go check that.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. See the eyebrows. They don't match the hair. And it's bothering me. They're a slate to oak.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What kind of outfit is she wearing? Like business? She's gonna go to a meeting later? That's that's the most normal. Seriously, why is it so shitty and boring? They went to Reatman's.
SPEAKER_04Everybody ready for the best effie line?
SPEAKER_07This is Mahagaday. Now Heads up, smiles on. I think we might have watched pass it.
SPEAKER_05I like the little legend Sierra neck ruffles on her wrists.
SPEAKER_07Did you see that old man touch her?
SPEAKER_04A quick search of my Kindle copy, by the way. Katniss is the one that comes up for the staged marriage proposal.
SPEAKER_07Peter Millark, you clean up nice. Do you think they put lifts in his shoes? Yeah, isn't Josh Hutcherson like much shorter? He is a big short king. Oh well.
SPEAKER_04Like, why not just eat a fucking tapeworm at this point? I mean that's basically.
SPEAKER_05Then you have to have the whole expulsion episode.
SPEAKER_07Hmm.
SPEAKER_04Oh talk. Oh, oops, I showed you my mocking jay. Please respond.
SPEAKER_06When he slides into your your DMs and accidentally sends you a JPIC.
SPEAKER_04Slides into your head.
SPEAKER_06And bad.
SPEAKER_07So flat. Yeah, decided.
SPEAKER_06I also love how when Katniss sees the mocking J-Watch, she's just like, what does this mean? Oh my god, we rub your two brain cells together just a little bit.
SPEAKER_04She can't. She left one in the arena. Like no, we definitely, I think we spent a solid 20 minutes complaining about how this mocking J is everywhere, and it's not until she's about to go into the arena that she's like, oh, it's a symbol.
SPEAKER_06After she's in the arena where she's like, oh wait, everything is connected. Yes. It literally takes going off the bracelet for her to be like.
SPEAKER_05No, it's not until um Johanna comes up.
SPEAKER_04Because Finnick shows off the bracelet and she's like, How the fuck do you have that? And then he he goes to save Pita when he hits we're gonna see it eventually, but like he goes to see the hits the the the the the the force field and is electrocuted and Finnick goes to perform Ctr and Katniss is like why are you kissing my man? Get off of him and she's just ready to she's ready to kill him, and it just like I I wanted to slap her so hard because every time every time these people proved to her that they were her her allies, she was like, I should kill them now, and just get it over with. BD won't survive, he'll die on his own, but Finnic. Finnick I shouldn't kill. That right there. Yeah, definitely magic. Because in in the book, she smells the blood on his breath when he's in the house and they didn't show it there. But to have the blood coming from his gums so like viscously into his drink, I think that was that was such a great way to win.
SPEAKER_06100% that little have yet to figure out how to work smell into a movie experience.
SPEAKER_02Well, that I mean bullshit.
SPEAKER_04But also, I mean, how else would they do it, right? Like like he smiles and he's just got blood everywhere that's just constantly coming out of his face. It's like normally how it is, right?
SPEAKER_05Isn't it like they sneeze and then pull their hand away and there's like blood on the handkerchief? Like that's normally they did it so much better here. Like it's so much more interesting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_07I think it's also like hidden well. Yeah. Look at that.
SPEAKER_04He knows that way before Katniss knows that.
SPEAKER_06Just because he's got more than two brain cells. He's had 80 years of being a creep.
SPEAKER_04Uh I am not looking forward to Ballad of Song, Birds, and Snakes, the book, but I am looking forward to the movie so I can make the Pan MM joke. Excuse me, the internet came up with it, not me. So blame the internet. Who hiss at TikTok?
SPEAKER_07And bitch, if you just left her alone, it would sweep itself under the rug.
SPEAKER_04Not understanding how physics works.
SPEAKER_07He couldn't complete that sentence.
SPEAKER_04A hug stops him from a whole like seven-chapter block where she's like, yeah, we're totally running away. It's gonna be easy.
SPEAKER_05Now that everyone's watching me and I'm super famous.
SPEAKER_04It still blows my mind that she lives in a world where that constant surveillance is like not a secret, and she's still surprised by it. In that you know, he is explaining, like, you know, you did not design this world, and it is not your fault that someone has decided to threaten your family. But then he goes about it all wrong, where he's like, I'm just gonna get in everybody's face and way and be a soldier for somebody else and actively want this, but in reverse, like this dude's house, Thresh's house. Wait, Thres? Thresh Thr something shows up at his house to sell the game, and that's how we find out that the other peacekeeper is gone. But I like saw him walking through the Doesn't he just see him walking? No, he went He had the game that Catness gave to him. And he went to sell it and then that's how we also got it. And that caught attacking everyone.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. District 12 itself is contraband, so what?
SPEAKER_04Explain to me how pictures are contraband.
SPEAKER_06How dare you have a photo of your loved one? Yeah, I You're not allowed to be happy or reminisce, be nostalgic.
SPEAKER_04I think it is safe to say that happiness is contraband in Ban Am in the districts. But like the pictures and some mason jars. Don't you dare be a mason jar millennial. How dare you? See, that's what I remembered and was expecting in the books was when he went into the district and he's like, fuck everybody. Like movie Gale and Book Gale and movie Pita and Book Pita and Movie Katniss and Book Katniss, wildly different things sometimes.
SPEAKER_07Like, hey, we didn't jump over an electric fence to get here. No one's yelling at you not to go there. Neither did we have a man, people are mad about your oppressive treatment. Better get somebody down there for more oppressive treatment. Also, isn't there supposed to be snow like everywhere?
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, because they make the mid snow to heal them, the the face.
SPEAKER_04And then Madge shows up with the morphling, but Madge is not in the movies. Nope. What is that that's hurting him? Oh, I don't know. The lashing. Never since she was smart. Does it seem to anybody else in that moment right there that um Hamish just like started drinking rubbing alcohol?
SPEAKER_07Oh my god, that's such a big fucking needle, Jesus Christ. This is where she touches his face. Yeah, it sure is. Look at her go. Let me just admire his face.
SPEAKER_04This is your friendly neighborhood watch, uh reminding you that kissing unconscious people is not okay.
SPEAKER_07Snow sees everything, so I better show him that I kiss this other guy again. Uh oh. Poor Pita. Oh I found my just friend sleeping with another friend. Yeah, 'cause that's what Hill loves, waking up and seeing you.
SPEAKER_05Gail closes his eyes, it's Katniss, opens them, it's PETA. Fuck!
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but at least PETA's not there stroking his face. You never know.
SPEAKER_05We don't see it.
SPEAKER_07We don't see it yet. I can't get snow in this bowl.
SPEAKER_04In the book, it feels like there was like a foot of snow on the ground. Here it looks like she's getting dirty snow to put on his wounds.
SPEAKER_07Mm-hmm. What do you see with your elf eyes? Spoiler.
SPEAKER_04Just uh reminding everybody of that lovely scene we have to look forward to.
SPEAKER_07Why would you broadcast it? Yeah. That's your fault. Especially they know who it is.
SPEAKER_04So I know we have the announcement here, and like of the deleted scenes, there's the scene of Plutarch walking down to where they keep all the quarter quell ideas, and he replaces the card in the box. I wish they'd kept that in. I remember when I first read it, I was really confused because everybody that told me they were like, oh, then in the the second book, they go back into the arena. I'm like, how the hell do they go back into the arena? They're victors, they're not supposed to go back in the arena. I'm like, did they break into the arena? What's going on? Are there survivors? Because everybody comes out of it with um a lot more mental issues than they went in with. Like they just kinda pack them in, take them out.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I remember reading a post about how the 75th Hunger Games are the one time that Hey Mitch's name was actually pulled.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. You can't say stuff like that because Julia hasn't read it yet.
SPEAKER_05Stop giving me spoilers.
SPEAKER_04Let me text. Let me let me text you a thing.
SPEAKER_05Honestly, I appreciate it. I do not like spoilers.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh. I'm doing it. I'm texting you a thing, Maggie.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, she's in the kitchen. Stop kissing. Kissing the wrong guy. Again. Also, I don't like how she's kissing him. In the book, isn't it he kissed her?
SPEAKER_04I don't care who initiates it. I just hate the two of them together. Maggie got my text. Maggie got my text, I think.
SPEAKER_02How fucking dare you?
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_02How very fucking dare you.
SPEAKER_04Cation down. Um I'm fairly certain anybody who has read Sunrise on the Reaping knows exactly what I texted Maggie.
SPEAKER_05Or being it is the first time that Katniss's name is pulled too.
SPEAKER_07It's true. That single slip in that big bowl is such an image. I hate that they even bothered to put a slip in like a giant fishbowl?
SPEAKER_04Like. Yeah. Yeah, let me nod at you. I'm sure they were required to be a little bit more.
SPEAKER_05So if Pita's name had gotten pulled and Hamanch volunteered, could PETA like fight that and be like, no, I'm gonna go?
SPEAKER_07Nope. Anybody else got days everyone?
SPEAKER_06He looks so especially small in that shot, like his propo proportions.
SPEAKER_04That was one problem I had with the like Josh Hutcherson does a great job portraying the character, but I've always thought that the actor that plays Kato would have been a better choice physically.
SPEAKER_05I don't like how they look like bugs. Sorry, I'm talking about the peacekeepers.
SPEAKER_04They look like Oh yeah, with their weird exoskeleton armor.
SPEAKER_05And how she's wearing up prison uniforms? They're actually Or she's gonna go fix my dirt bike.
SPEAKER_02Surprise she's a mechanic.
SPEAKER_07Gold penises. Yeah, almost like we were murdering children. Who knew?
SPEAKER_06Now we get to murder 70-year-old women.
SPEAKER_05That Avax Avox in the corner is terrifying. Also bug like.
SPEAKER_07Oh. Right?
SPEAKER_05It's giving Caroline.
SPEAKER_04You mean Coraline?
SPEAKER_05Coraline, thank you.
SPEAKER_07Oh. Why are we lounging on the chair like a GQ cover?
SPEAKER_05I don't know, I like her sleeve shoes. I think it's just the shape of the couch.
SPEAKER_07Uh oh BD.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, everybody's got a picture of them above their bed for, you know, reasons. Uh yeah, we all hope she goes quickly, but instead we're gonna get a very violent visual dance in the novel at least.
SPEAKER_05I hate this outfit too. God.
SPEAKER_08What is that?
SPEAKER_05The weird bang comb over? And the plate choke collar thing? Oh, pet and the horse.
SPEAKER_04Pat and the horse, which we discussed.
SPEAKER_06You mean the thong on her chest?
SPEAKER_07That's that's what it looks like.
SPEAKER_04His outfit in the movie covers significantly more than what was described in the book. Because the book was like he's got like yeah, he's got a strategically placed knot.
SPEAKER_07Yep. Yeah and that's it.
SPEAKER_04Uh the scene reads so differently, knowing that his whole purpose coming up to her was to make friends knowing what was going to happen in the arena.
SPEAKER_07To give me sugar.
SPEAKER_05I think that headband was Lenny Kravitz's idea.
SPEAKER_04I was just going to say that. I'm like, you can't convince me that he didn't walk on set, but like, I'm wearing it.
SPEAKER_05I think this looks cool. My character would like this.
SPEAKER_04Like, do you ever see the scene from Miracle Workers where Daniel Radcliffe is singing She'll be coming around the mountain? You can't convince me Daniel Radcliffe didn't have that outfit in his closet.
SPEAKER_07100%.
SPEAKER_04Caesar's hair in this one, like, so in the first one, it's he's got that like really striking vibrant blue. But in in this one, it feels like it hasn't been upkept. Like he had like he had purple, but it's case small.
SPEAKER_06Like it's four weeks past the die job and has taken one too many uh long showers.
SPEAKER_05The small thing that pisses me off is when they're when they just showed that piece of the horses and the horses are like going. As someone who like rides and competes, it's not hard to train your horses to all step at the same time. And it bothers me that the horses aren't in sync. Because it's like so basic. Look at the both are not.
SPEAKER_04I absolutely are. Yeah, I a hundred percent agree because like when I was a kid, I did I did dressage and I'm like, uh, these it could have been so nice, like they just match some horses together.
SPEAKER_05Sorry. Small rant.
SPEAKER_04No, no, absolutely, I totally understand.
SPEAKER_05Also, why did their suits be lit the whole time? Why did they light like at the end?
SPEAKER_07I have no idea.
SPEAKER_05Oh, the best part.
SPEAKER_07Oh God, the Joan Joanna scene.
SPEAKER_06The best reaction image, though, comes from Jennifer Lawrence in this scene.
SPEAKER_04Cannot read this scene without seeing this face that's coming up.
SPEAKER_06What is that decision, Jennifer Lawrence?
SPEAKER_07The cleave move. See, like that was impressive.
SPEAKER_04The one where they like turn around and throw them together. I'm like, so choreography, and then Joanna comes over and she's doing choreography. Inabaria over here doing choreography, like this dude with a sticky. Yeah. That's gonna be rough when King. Stop it, you guys.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, my emotionally devastating book is emotionally devastating.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Oh, it's gonna be so rough. So so the shimmer that was here, that's what I imagined throughout the arena. But then when she goes to like shoot her arrow through it in the book, there's like a definitive square missing in the force field.
SPEAKER_05Oh, really?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, she was like, and I I see it, you know, the quote or whatever. And she's like, and she shoots it through. Where like in the in the movie, she like comically times it with a lightning strike.
SPEAKER_07Oh mags. I can't believe I have to reload this again. I could teach you at in this afternoon.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Uh obviously, you can learn anything in an afternoon. You ride horses, obviously, right? You know that you could you could learn to do that expertly in an afternoon.
SPEAKER_07Obviously.
SPEAKER_05This is the thing that everyone gets so impressed by.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Not her not her stunning personality. So I understand capital technology, but I also understand that these arrow shafts are bouncing off the metal as they go through these holograms. Like they're not they're not hitting something solid unless programmable matter exists.
SPEAKER_07Oh, virus. That was so cute.
SPEAKER_04Hamish is like, you're gonna drive this boy to drink, and he's only got three days to live at this point. Again, I really wish for the purpose of the movie that we got to see what they each presented.
SPEAKER_07Yep. That would have been fun. Another little exo-weird skeleton thing. Do we get to see the rue painting? I'm pretty sure we do.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we see the rue painting here.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh, but in the book, everything is like cleaned up and they put a mat over top of things, and she's like, why does it smell like a hospital wing in here?
SPEAKER_07What the hell?
SPEAKER_04Can we also just like take a moment about PETA's artistic talent that he must have an idetic memory to paint what he paints from memory with no uh reference? Oh, producer Rob brings up the point that he might have had nightmares about that, but even then, like he would have to recall that image directly to his mind. That's true.
SPEAKER_05It it's you know what everyone thought that she got such a high mark because of the stunt. It was because that knot. That knot was sick. Yeah. They were like, that's the best knot we've ever seen. Look at that.
SPEAKER_04The eyebrows, the hairline, the beard, and still had the right stene a crane on it. Stanley Tucci just beating Stanley Tucci. I just want the game show music from this. That's all I want.
SPEAKER_05Do you think you're about to make it your ringtone or something?
SPEAKER_04I I kind of want to. Specifically, I want it for whenever my mother calls. Inspire the Steamstone.
SPEAKER_05His eyebrows are also.
SPEAKER_04The spray tan he has?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Like line disappears at the top. Like, he blended it like it's 2006, which is to say that he did not blend his makeup at all.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, what a night you really care. Ha ha ha.
SPEAKER_04I am sad that we didn't get to see all the wedding dresses.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, that would have been fun. Also, how come they get to do their interview together? She's a better actress than you.
SPEAKER_04Yo, everyone's a better actress than Katniss. That's why they don't tell Katniss anything. Which one? The the eight thousand one. The eight thousand on the left or the eight thousand on the right?
SPEAKER_07All right then.
SPEAKER_05No, you guys Jessica Jessica.
SPEAKER_07Those are interesting eyelashes. How weird do you think those eyelashes feel with the like full finger length out to the side?
SPEAKER_04I imagine uh monetarily, he already has paid for it.
SPEAKER_07Brilliant. Excellent. Ooh, look at the flow.
SPEAKER_04I mean, it is like a nice shape. Big fluffy wedding dress.
SPEAKER_06You know what it reminds me of? A wedding dress? No. Um, I don't know if you've seen them, but it's like full body suits made out of trash bags where when you jump, it has like that weird flowy effect, and there's just a bunch of like TikToks of people doing that because it just looks funny and you look like a Muppet. That's what that dress. The bottom half of that dress reminds me of this Muppet trash bag dress.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah. Why does she turn so shit in this one?
SPEAKER_04Oh, because she, you know, isn't a dancer and has no idea how to spot.
SPEAKER_05But in the first one she does, she spots perfectly.
SPEAKER_04Also, like, why does she bring her arms up?
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Cause that makes it feel like she knew that the dress was gonna become that shape.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. You're gonna die. I'm gonna kill that bitch. Best pregnancy trope ever. Right here. Yeah, duh. What is that sort of baby.
SPEAKER_02If it were for the baby. If it were for the baby, if it baby for the baby. If it be for the baby.
SPEAKER_05Chap just looks at her like nice.
SPEAKER_04I love that is my favorite reaction gif is name. It's just been like, hey.
SPEAKER_06Am I pregnant and I didn't even know about it?
SPEAKER_03Oh, she does though.
SPEAKER_06That's exactly what she does in the book. She's like, I could be pregnant. Wait a chair to bed. No one's taken their pants off.
SPEAKER_04I've I've gone to the bathroom after PETA. It's possible I got pregnant from the toilet seat.
SPEAKER_05I hate it. We get pregnant makeup.
SPEAKER_07I hate our makeup in this shit. Oh, right, right, right, right, right.
SPEAKER_04I kinda hate they didn't include the scene where they come back and tell each other what they did for their assessment.
SPEAKER_05Agreed.
SPEAKER_04And Kat like Pete is like, oh, I painted Rue on the floor, and they're like, why would you do that? Like, what is wrong with you? And Kat, this is just like, I guess now's a bad time to tell you all. I painted a mannequin like Seneca Crane and hung him, and they're like, what the fuck is wrong with you?
SPEAKER_06That is sociopathic behavior, man.
SPEAKER_07We know. I'm so proud. That's not your last advice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and then I'll do that, and then all of the things I send your way to do that, you're gonna try and kill because you're a sociopath.
SPEAKER_07I like those lamps. Keep keep him alive. Why is everyone trying to keep him alive?
SPEAKER_05I wish they showed the rooftop garden scene.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04When I saw this in theaters, I went to a midnight showing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And at this point, everyone in the theater started holding hands with the people next to them.
SPEAKER_05I like when things like that happen in you know public and stuff. So wholesome, everyone banning together. Yeah, and like I.
SPEAKER_07Y'all ready to relive this particular scene? So cute.
SPEAKER_06My guy.
SPEAKER_04I love two things about that scene. One is the delivery of I Want Them Dead, and the other one is the look he gives Plutarch when he's like, be patient.
SPEAKER_07He's like, bitch, the fuck did you just say to me?
SPEAKER_04Why not just explode the the tube that she's on before she gets a chance to jump off of it? How come I can think of a How come I can think of a better way to do this than the Capital can? Because you could absolutely just edit the footage to be like she jumped off too soon. And we know that they edit the footage all the damn time.
SPEAKER_07The suit is light, but the underwear is like indestructible, so we don't pin that pin to that suit, we just tuck it under a thing because that'll be secure. Also, why would you pin it at like the elbow joint?
SPEAKER_06Because that's just is asking for trouble. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07What weird choices all around. And then I wait for the tube to go up. And it doesn't. I'm in a glass case of emotion.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we're about to be. Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_07Yep. Not only can Katniss swim, but she can dive.
SPEAKER_05Does that confuse no one else? They talk about it, her dad took her to that lake.
SPEAKER_03And and taught her to do And taught her to swim. A dive though?
SPEAKER_05Like where would you where would you learn to dive at a lake? I don't know. That's a good point.
SPEAKER_07Oh no, Thad. Oh no, I fell as producer Rob says, I used to be a tribute like you till I took an arrow to the knee.
SPEAKER_04Do you think Hamich sat PETA down and was like, listen, so it'll be, you know, who she asked for, Finnick and Mags and BD and Y Ris? Or do you think he like also just left away?
SPEAKER_06I also want to know why she didn't just shoot off a couple arrows right then and there when she was staring at the other tributes back at the bus stop. Because girl, you got a raised weapon.
SPEAKER_07Right.
SPEAKER_04Well, you know, the reason is because it would have required some forethought, and Katniss Everdeen is certainly not known for thought.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Apparently the woman that played Mags, uh, whenever Finnic, the guy that plays Finnick was carrying her, she they had to keep telling her that Mags was mute because she'd be like,
SPEAKER_07It's like, man, I gotta work hard for your fucking help. Right. Force food. Why are you kissing my man?
SPEAKER_04I was so mad at this part in the book because she after she describes what's going on, she realizes it's CPR and like she's seen her mother do it a hundred times. But as it starts off, she's like, why is he kissing my my not boyfriend? And what the hell is going on?
SPEAKER_07I'm like, girl. Oh my god, this is taking forever. Jeez. Oh, and that's the first one that makes her toes curl and she realizes she doesn't want him as just a friend. Is that it's working now because I'm in love with you. As a friend. Oh wait, that's the other way.
SPEAKER_05I don't love that PETA in both books like has to be saved. It kind of puts like he gets his leg cut early on, and now he gets electrocuted early on, and he's like, I'm useless. Yeah. It's just extra baggage that she just didn't need to deal with. But it also kind of kept her distracted from everything else.
SPEAKER_04What would happen if Katniss were focused? We'll never know.
SPEAKER_07We'll never know is right.
SPEAKER_05None of these books can she have a healthy relationship so she can actually focus on doing something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And also like what you're saying about Pita, like does take away if PETA were a girl, we would be having a conversation about how terrible that is. But I think it's it's equally terrible that we just have this character that constantly has their autonomy ripped away, that they always like like you're saying they always have to be saved.
SPEAKER_05But like to the detriment of the female main character.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's the part that, like, like, yeah, okay, yes, it's also annoying that he like can't contribute ever. But then she's so focused on him that she doesn't notice the rest of the world around her, and it's like that didn't have to be the story either.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Also, do you realize how low that ceiling has to be for her shot to hit it?
SPEAKER_07Right? I mean, what are they gonna do? Fly though? Hey. Suck a dick, but not mine, it belongs to somebody else. But not Pita's either, because he's your friend. This is my little lady. You can't have her get your own.
SPEAKER_04Oh, right, we're supposed to move out it.
SPEAKER_07Why do you think other victors were not included? What?
SPEAKER_04Like in the plan. So Finnic knows what's going on, Mags knew what was going on to get the Iris and BD. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Who says that they weren't? Didn't they list all of them with the bread?
SPEAKER_04No, the bread was specifically if it's the district was the hour. And the amount was the day or something like that. I don't think they included the uh baker's dozen of bread that they got every hour on the hour in the movie.
SPEAKER_06Also, doesn't it take them like three chapters to figure out the spile?
SPEAKER_07Yeah. There's also no note with it. Yeah. It's just the spile. That is the most inefficient way for you to hold water, catniss. Katniss doesn't think inefficiently? Color me surprised. Right?
SPEAKER_06I hate when people do that.
SPEAKER_07Oh, that's the creepiest fucking noise. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I forget, do they show the guy that gets picked up in like five pieces?
SPEAKER_05I don't remember. They just show the they just showed the like hovercraft thing.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we got another twelve chapters before y'all figure out it's a clock.
SPEAKER_05Even though the first thing he says is midnight.
SPEAKER_07Okay, I feel like clock wasn't that far away. Don't forget, she could kill you in your sleep. She thinks about it immediately.
SPEAKER_06You know what I'm really glad with this movie is if they have a nighttime scene where we can actually see shit. If this movie was made like ten years later, it would be pitch black.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It'd either be pitch black like a DC movie, or they would use that filter day for night and it would look terrible, and I would be screaming about it.
SPEAKER_07Her not immediately wanting to run from the fog. I wonder what that is. What a good fucking reaction, Jesus.
SPEAKER_04Have you ever seen stabilized footage of Star Trek episodes? Yeah, uh that's kind of what that felt like. Yeah, so just imagine this little old lady's getting carried the entire time she just goes. So two things in the book. One, PETA is missing a leg, so he's gotten the prosthetic, and two, he got recently struck by the electricity of the force field, so he's like not able to keep up. I kinda wish they had kept one of those weaknesses for him to really uh stress up this scene a bit more, other than like able-bodied PETA is able to get himself out.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna do it really well, and then immediately kill her.
SPEAKER_07Oh, they also didn't keep the ointment in the movie. Oh, not the monkeys.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah, they just go into the water, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they just go in the water, they get soothed, they don't get the the green ointment that like they then use to creep Pita out.
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah. Now aren't you thinking about two different things? Because this does happen in the movie.
SPEAKER_04Right, this does. But later they get um ointment because the stuff still like itches.
SPEAKER_05Oh, right, it's for the itching.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and and it's all green and and gross looking, and that's when Finn's just like, wow, you look hideous, and she's like, Oh, is this your first time? He's like, I have no idea how you live with it. Cause this is also where they like they go under and she's like, Oh, just make sure to go under and open your eyes, and we're all like, It is salt water.
SPEAKER_07Fucking ouch, but now the monkeys are awake.
SPEAKER_04And I understand why we didn't do this in the movie, because, you know, PG 13 ratings, but in the book, their like wetsuits are completely destroyed, but their underwear was A-OK, and we were like, for the first time, they're wearing underwear, and it's like the most industrial strength.
SPEAKER_07Would they even know what monkeys are?
SPEAKER_06I guess because those big ones are definitely not native to Native America, I don't think.
SPEAKER_05Oh right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I forget this is America.
SPEAKER_06Hunger Games into uh nonfiction. Uh this year, I believe, was when it went the 2025 thing was they were gonna do Hunger Games. But make it the games, that's right.
SPEAKER_05No, wasn't it like it literally got released on the first day we recorded? We had our like recap first pod, and it was like announced that day.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It was something like that.
SPEAKER_07Baboons are fucking terrifying. Yo. Really, though, they are just though I guess it wouldn't matter if they were not native. I mean, probably engineered. Yeah. Ouch. You think he sits up and he's like, I've got this biting pain in my shoulder. The sacrificial morphing, we made it so much sadder than it was in the book. Seriously. You know, when we read the books, we do them in the little sections and we go like week to week as we read them.
SPEAKER_04But having all of these deaths crammed into this two and a half hour Definitely like this is a feeling.
SPEAKER_07And it's a lot of them, and I don't like it. Don't forget, if you put pressure on coal, it becomes a pearl.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but the rest of the stuff like didn't come over the barriers.
SPEAKER_06It seems like maybe the barrier ends at the cornucopia.
SPEAKER_05Thing that would kill you. Like the thing that would hurt you is protected by the barrier. So like the wave goes up and it crashes, but that's just like non-lethal more wave, small wave.
SPEAKER_07Finnec just goes over like, Hey bitch, fancy meeting you here. Tick tock, it's a clock.
SPEAKER_04Did he get the wire from the cornucopia? No, he like broke into some shit and just took it out of the arena and had something.
SPEAKER_05It was a it was in a tree. The monkeys had half of it.
SPEAKER_07She's like, thank God somebody finally understands. Yuppoo. Say, how did her movie magic special so heart wrenching in the book?
SPEAKER_05I'm glad that it didn't take a long time for her to like get finic out of that, like it did in the book.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. No, why? Uh, first off, bitch, husband. And we wouldn't want that. Try me, bitch. You can't have it.
SPEAKER_04Why does it look like he's like stroking the wire there? He's like he's my pretty girl.
SPEAKER_08She won't be my precious.
SPEAKER_05Right. They're like never hungry because they just have bread all the time.
SPEAKER_04I can't imagine they'll be happy about six of us.
SPEAKER_07Does that mean you have like six brothers and sisters?
SPEAKER_04He's got at least like two other siblings, but it it's like really clear in the book that his parents are like, Well, you're useless. They don't rely on him. Like, even in his house, like his family doesn't move in with him to the house in Victor's Village.
SPEAKER_07I also love how the pictures in the locket are screenshots from the first movie. Not with that much tongue. Speak for yourself. Carbon fiber? I don't know. I have no idea what's a conductive metal and what's not. Producer Rob, what do we think the tree is made of? Producer Rob also does it know. No, I would never. I just I'm better friends with Pita than I am with Finneck.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, and so it's like really not obvious here that she takes the transmitter out. It's just that she stabbed her in the arm and rubbed blood on her neck to make it look like she was dead.
SPEAKER_07But seriously, Katniss gets concussions all the time. Joanne, Joanna. Are you okay? Are you okay, Joanna? This wire is attached to something very conductive. I should hold it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I've been through so much these last we need to preserve him for his most painful death of uh blades.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04See, here she like it's comical the timing that she has. I've heard of trick shots, right? But this is this is insane timing.
SPEAKER_07Hey catness, watch out for that tree. Hey bitch.
SPEAKER_04That's how I imagine everybody the season finale of The Sopranos when they just got to plaque. Spoiler. Just like I say at the beginning of every time we're talking about this, it's like twenty years old at this point.
SPEAKER_07Sopranos, maybe find out. Oh yeah, Sopranos is way older. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So just about twenty years old, yeah. It ended on uh in two in two thousand seven, according to producer Rob.
SPEAKER_07Dead girls don't look at explosions.
SPEAKER_05You gotta sing it's gotta go Dead girls don't look at explosions giant claw coming to pick her up somehow doesn't pinches her back.
SPEAKER_04Ah claw, this is the worst crane machine game.
SPEAKER_07No dirt. What did you get? A dead girl. Damn it. Ugh, I hate that. It looks so uncomfortable. So yeah, like is it giving mocking Jay?
SPEAKER_03Is that what it's supposed to do? Is it supposed to be like the bird Christ-like post? Because that like can can anybody put their shoulders back like that naturally for an extended period of time. Yeah, that's that's what I'm saying. Like it really hurts to do that at the moment. Yeah, wasn't she? Those are the muscles I engage when I shoot.
SPEAKER_06Uh basically numb and I mean she was electrocuted, so yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, in in the books, it's like a force field. Like it's like an electrocuted force field or something.
SPEAKER_04Also, uh just a PSA, stop ripping out your IVs.
SPEAKER_07All right. Cat in a severdeen with a syringe versus the capital sweetheart. Maggie, if I have to suffer, you have to suffer. But we could tell each other. We could tell each other because he was obsessed with you.
SPEAKER_04And we didn't have the the series of them watching all the games and Hamish coming up and being like, well, I'm glad you got to see it, I'm gonna go get drunk.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I don't have to be a little bit more. She's gonna be dramatic.
SPEAKER_07Gaslight, sedate, and restrain. Hey, do you think he ran his hand over her face and he kissed her? Yeah. Yeah, why do you have that look like you cheated on your wife?
SPEAKER_06I remember screaming with that line.
SPEAKER_04Yo, that is my least favorite way to end books, is when it feels like it's the middle of a conversation.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And then jumps forward in time so much.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like could you imagine if the movie did that right now? I think he just goes, there is no district 12 and it just.
SPEAKER_06Don't do face acting, please.
SPEAKER_04That's that's her that's her rage face. Not to be confused with her I might be a little horny face that we saw in the elevator.
SPEAKER_06Okay, but the mocking J going through the different evolutions of it as it comes on on the covers of the book.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yes. I do I do love that. I love that imagery of the covers. I also love that the covers are like really simple. They're they're I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a beautiful book cover. There are some books that I've bought just for the cover, the book itself sucks, but I just keep it because I'm like it. But the art is so lovely. But I do love uh the symbolism throughout the series. I think that's something that's really well done and the simplicity of it. Like Chef's kiss.
SPEAKER_07Mm-hmm. Ugh.
SPEAKER_06I still really want Woody Harrelson to play. Yeah, Woody Harrelson's gonna be.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, just make him make him his own baby Heimish self. If we can use AI to put Princess Leah in a movie, then we can filter out would be a little bit more.
SPEAKER_06Screen by scene by scene.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Do you understand how much like facial paste would have to go on that makeup? Just smoke it. Just smoke it. You know what? Yeah. If they do make it a bit more. If they're as long as it doesn't look like D. Ivan Hansen. Where Yeah, where Ben Platt looks like a sexual predator in comparison to the rest of his cast, yeah, that'd be nice. Well, guys, we officially get to move on to Mocking Jay and then relive all of that, of course, a couple across a couple movie nights. Yeah. Are you are you ready for that? And then Julia and Katie get to read Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Uh and Sunrise on the Reaping for the very first time.
SPEAKER_06Post-production assistant Jim Butts.
SPEAKER_04Uh yo, Jim Butz. Just clap for Jim Butts. I uh I do believe, and I I get this from my aunt who actively works uh in the film industry. Uh you should always watch the credits. Not just because some people have funny names like Jim Butts, but because there's so many people that work on a movie that have it all come together, especially book-to-film adaptations, because there are people that actively, you know, had to go through the source material and talk it out with that creator to create this adaptation, and they all 18 set dressers. My goodness. Like that they all deserve to have their name seen, especially whoever does Effie's wigs.
SPEAKER_06Holy Look, I agree with that, but it is late, and I am sleepy, and I have not eaten for 10 hours. I'm gonna go to bed.
SPEAKER_04Well, okay then. In that case, we're gonna hit everybody at home is gonna continue watching the credits because it's very important. The rest of us here, however, are going to go to bed. It is 10.30. 10. I'll fucking.
SPEAKER_059.30. So much night to myself still.
SPEAKER_04You know what? Screw you both. I'm gonna go make myself tacos. I'm an adult. I can have to go.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you can.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Do it.
SPEAKER_04I'm doing it.
SPEAKER_06And my fiance's not coming back from work yet, so I can't even be like, hey, go get me some chicken. What's that? Oh. The worst. Alrighty. Have a good time in Mocking J, and I'll see you guys for next one week.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. Yeah, you gotta stay here though, because producer Rob's gotta hit stop.
SPEAKER_06Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh we have we have pre-recorded outros. What do you mean take a goodbye?
SPEAKER_06Okay. Goodbye, good night everybody.
SPEAKER_05Goodbye. Goodbye. Wait, wait, gotta make a square melt.
SPEAKER_04Deadly too, like your seats are flickering. Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye.
SPEAKER_01Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye.
SPEAKER_04I am a twelve. You have known me for how long? I think you know I am in fact a twelve girl.
SPEAKER_01Stop for the love of God. Why just want to go to bed? Good night. Good night, everyone.
