Welcome to the Learning Corner, your host, Dr. Nicole. And today we have a super special guest. Her name is Mackenzie, but don't let it fool you. She is the owner of two locations of a for-profit business named Burn Boot Camp, which I get to see her when I work out most times. So I'm very, very excited to finally have her on our podcast today. So without further ado, here is McKenzie. Hi, thanks for having me. Thanks for coming over here today. My pleasure. Our businesses are next to each other, and we still have a problem with our schedule. Yeah, well, we're busy people. We've got a lot going on. So it's called business ownership. Yes. Okay, so today I wanted to speak a lot about um who is Mackenzie and what brought her into owning a business and why this business. And and kind of speaking to the heart of who she is, because a lot of times we don't get to see that or hear her speak on that because she's so busy. She's got a family, she's got two locations, she's doing all the back-end stuff, taxis and just stopped. I mean, we have all these things going on. Um, and when when we look at business owners and we start to think about all the roles and hats and everything, um, we don't really get to know why they do their business, why they got into what they do. Right. So let's start out with the big question. Okay. Why did you get into owning and operating a gym?

SPEAKER_01

Great question. Um I had a career um in nonprofits and I got pregnant with my daughter Harper. She is now five. Um, but at the time um I had Harper, I went back to work and was burning myself out, um, kind of burning the candle from both ends. I would work a full day, spend time with her, put her to bed, and then I would go back to work um until like 11 o'clock at night. Of course, then she'd be at that time be up in the middle of the night a couple times uh for nursing and stuff. So um I would say it wasn't really manageable because I was long term, maybe sustainable is the right word. It wasn't very sustainable because I was trying to um work the same way I had worked without being a mom, while being a mom. And um my husband had told me, like, in my opinion, very randomly, that if I wanted to stop working, I could. And it caught me completely off guard because I hadn't even thought about it, to be honest. And he's like, Oh, well, I feel like you've been dropping some hints. And I was like, um, I maybe been telling you how I feel that like it's a lot, these are a lot a lot going on. It's like a new, whole new life change, you know, for me. And um, so he was like, Well, if you want to take a little bit of time, like I think that we can make that happen. So I I took some time off, um, was very fortunate to be in the position to be able to do that. Now I know not everybody is, and so I feel very blessed and very lucky to be able to have the young years with my daughter, and I knew there was a timestamp on it, right? And I'm very um analytical detail-oriented. So in my head, I was like, okay, if I'm taking time off, like I know it's not forever, this is going to be until she's like school age, and then I'm gonna be going back to work. So to me, I knew this was, you know, like a few years of time, and it was only gonna happen once. So that's kind of how I reconciled with leaving the workforce because that was a big decision for me. I felt like I was, I'm sorry I'm being so long-winded, but for me, it was hard to stop working because I felt like it was very much tied up in my personality, like my value in society. Um, so I was like, man, well, if I go out and see people that I've known my whole life here in Florida, anyways, as like um a professional, business professional, or what are they gonna talk to me about now that I'm a stay-at-home mom, you know? So, anyways, it was a little bit hard transition uh for me at first, but then once I was like, okay, this is a career break, um, I'm taking time to like focus on what I want to focus on, and I know I'm gonna rejoin the workforce at some point. That made it a little bit more palpable. Um, and so fast forward, Harper was turning three and she was ready for pre-K. Like she was, we had I'd taken her to school like one day a week for half day stuff, and she was definitely looking for more. You can tell when kids are ready for more, you know, more socialization, more structure, consistency. And so I was like, okay, she's ready. Now I have to be ready, uh, which was fine. And so um my husband and I, Brian, we had talked a lot about like what's next. And at first we um I was doing some um property management. I had a small property management company when I was taking care of Harper, just properties that we owned, um updating one, renovating one, renting out the other, kind of preparing for a potential um Airbnb situation, all that good stuff. Um, and so I was like, okay, I guess I could just like scale this up and make this a bigger thing, but my heart wasn't really in it, you know, like it was a nice option for the time. But um, and then my husband was on Biz Buy Sell and saw that Burn Boot Camp was for sale, and I was like, you mean the one that I work out in? Like the one that I go to? Um my family? Right. And he I was like, show me a picture of that. And so I was like, oh my gosh, this really is like the gym that I go to, and the gym that I love, and the one that I've been bringing Harper to when I've been a stay-at-home mom, and um the one that's got me talking about protein 24-7, um, all the things, you know. So all the protein. So it once um we I knew that what opportunity was out there, it was a very quick pivot. I was like, I want to do this. I've always been interested in fitness, I've always been interested in franchises. My husband is very creative, very um entrepreneurial. So he's always talking about building a business from scratch, and I'm very much pro-fise. I'm like, I like um something that has been yeah, it's been tested, proven, and I can then it works. Right. It has there's some data behind it, and then I can just finesse.

SPEAKER_00

We're not gonna live on the street while we have to get this up and running.

SPEAKER_01

I I like I said before, I I mean I'm very analytical, super detail-oriented. I'm like, if I have to stress test every single um uh vendor that I'm going to use, every single platform I'm gonna use, I was like, this is a lot of decisions for someone who's super analytical. So I would like some of those decisions to be taken off my place so I can focus on the most important ones, you know. Um, and also I love it. Like I love burn boot camp. I loved it as a member. I was I was like a quiet fangirl, you know. I don't think anyone knew that I loved it as much as I did, except for my husband, but I was always a fangirl. So um when I found out that it was it was an option, it was like a quick, quick yes, and like this is an opportunity for me to take all the things I've done in my career and mix it with everything that I love personally, um, and build the future that I want, you know? So it's very exciting. And do you think Harper will share that love and maybe Oh my goodness. I'm so glad you asked that question, actually, because well, of course she like thinks she owns the place whenever she's in there, which is a challenge at times. But her cousins were down here, and we have the Burn Boot Camp book at home, and it has like recipes in it, and then it also has a bunch of exercises. It has like 24 exercises, and she takes the book out, sets it up on a stool, lines up the cousins, and starts training camp in my living room. And I was like, I took a video, it was priceless. She's got some work to do. Uh, but she doesn't know the names of any of the exercises, but she's very good at demoing. Do this, do this. She's got a finger, right? And then we're gonna do this. That is adorable. I have to hook her up with Sylvia on some of the uh on our next camp.

SPEAKER_00

You should like mother-daughter, you should have her come in and train with the trainer.

SPEAKER_01

Well, we talked about doing like a reverse kids' camp where like the kids get to train parts of it. Wouldn't that be so funny? Yeah, it would be awesome. I know, it'd be so cool. I'll be there. So, anyways. Yes. So up until then, she'd only helped me with like small things like putting the you know, like the retail stickers on the retail, stuff like that, you know. Um, but that was really fun to see her do that. I was like, oh my gosh, this is shit.

SPEAKER_00

She blew me. Yeah. She's seeing her mom and she's like, oh, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do this. Yeah. What do you think is her favorite part? Like coming to work with you, doing the workout, just being like, What do you maybe foresee her catching on to and maybe wanting to do as she gets older? You know, that's always the question.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know yet. I don't think I know yet, to be honest, because she just kind of like dabbles in all the things. Yeah, when she's young. And there's occasionally like I'll go in child watch and we'll I'll be like, Do you want to run child watch with me today? And so she loves to pick out like the coloring pages for that and decide like what we're gonna do for our craft. She gets super into it, she's very crafty. So she likes helping on child watch. Obviously, like I said, she likes to play trainer too, so I'm not sure. We'll see. Yeah, you'll have to keep us posted. She's big on togetherness, like she's uh quality time is definitely her love language because like as long as we can do it together, like that's what she's interested in, you know. So what's your love language? All of them? No, ah, I hate to say it. I don't I wish my love language wasn't my love language, but I would say probably words of affirmation.

SPEAKER_00

Really? Okay. Why do you not like that?

SPEAKER_01

Because I think it sounds like a shallow love language, to be honest.

SPEAKER_00

Really? I do. I think that's amazing. I wish mine was affirmation. Really? Mine mine's gifts. Oh, okay. Gifts and quality time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, quality time. I I think quality time probably is uh I don't know.

unknown

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's my second one. But yeah, words of affirmation is definitely my first one. But it's it's tricky because like I have to be qualified. Like words, if somebody gives me a compliment and I know it's like not value, like it's it's not based in like they told me I did a good job, but I know they weren't watching, or you know, or it's like in something that they it's almost gotta be like a quality affirmation. Quality affirmation, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, not just like an add a girl. Right.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, it does do make me feel good, but it's not the same. Yeah, it's not the same. I like to, I guess I like to know that I've added value. Oh you know what I mean? Like I like to know that people have observed me adding value, which sometimes gets me in trouble. I feel like that presents as a weakness at times because in as far as like a business owner, because a lot of the work that's gonna have the highest impact on the business is the work that people don't see. And so I find myself trying to strike a balance of okay, I need to at least do X number of things that people see so that they know like I am here, I'm in the business, I'm present, and that they feel my value.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_01

As well as I mean these higher impact things that no one sees, but take quite a bit of time a lot of times, anyways.

SPEAKER_00

Well, business owners see the impact. So at a girl, okay, well, like a true as being a member at Burn and seeing the changes that you have made, it's made my experience very nice because I've seen the camaraderie of the team change. Right, and that changes with people, but it also changes with leadership. So that is a very strong, like thank you. And I've noticed and heard other members notice too that coming in, it's more cohesive. Um, not that it wasn't before, but right. I feel like you've you've really developed the staff that you have, and you really made some, yes. So, and I know that we spoke about this a little bit, yes. Um, but tell me about the assessments you like to take and what I know you said something about individualism.

SPEAKER_01

Individualization, yes. Thank you. Speak to that a little bit. Um, so I love any assessment I can get my hands on disc, Myers Brakes, Strengths Finders, Enneagram. I'm sure there's many more, but those are the ones that come to mind. Um I've done integrity selling too, now I'm just trying to think of all the other ones. Um, but in strengths finders, one of my top strengths is individualization. And that particular strength is the ability to understand what makes people unique and different, and to find ways to place people together in a team to fill each other's gaps. So um it does take time because first you need to understand people, you need to get to know your people, um, and not just at face value, because sometimes people tell you things and it's not necessarily what they mean. So you have to also um get to know what they're saying and also what their intentions are, what their interests are, what their capabilities are. So there's layers to it, right? Takes a little bit of time. Um, and then comes the uh next phase of developing them towards where they're headed, not just where they are. So yeah, it's a bit a little bit of a journey at Burn Boot Camp. I've had the opportunity to have some structure around jobs, um, meaning like this is typically what each person in the world of Burn Boot Camp does, but also the flexibility to be able to say, if I have somebody who has the skills, the capacity, the will to do something different, and the person who's typically in that role, you know, maybe doesn't have those uh that that's those skills or that that interest, I can shift and pivot and take pieces of different roles and assign them to different people so that people are now doing things that they like. So like as they take on more and they're building towards their next step in the business, if that's what they want to do, right? Um then I can start giving them pieces and build their confidence, build build their skills and ready them for the next step so that when that time when the business is there and that they're ready and the the time is right, um, they fill those shoes very comfortably.

SPEAKER_00

So well, I've noticed, and that is a skill that not many people carry. So you should definitely be like, thank you, because you are amazing at that. Thank you. So there is a lot of things that as a member, I've been a member at Bern now, I don't even know. I'd have to look at my thing, it's either four or five years, and I never worked out, and I found a family at Bern, and I like the workouts, even though I hate working out. Just a side note, um, I go for the people, I don't go for the workout. Although the workouts for most people are amazing, but that's a little bit about me, anyways. Um community is very important to what we do, you know. Yes, it's community. So that doesn't surprise me. Yes, but I've never worked out or more than a workout, so I get it. Yes, yeah, you guys. So that's what I'm trying to get at is when you joined and you decided to own, take ownership in Burn, it was probably the same feeling as when you became a member of Burn. Like I became a member because I wanted to be a part of something. Now you're probably like, hey, I need to become the owner because I want to make it something. So how did you I guess what I'm asking is how did you know the direction you wanted to go on on getting one and then acquiring a second? And maybe what are your plans going forward as the family owner or the burn owner of both locations? Can you speak to that a little bit? Kind of just like where you are, where you're going short term, and then what maybe your visions and passions are and what you see for like maybe my tenure like vision board kind of feel like yeah, I have an answer for that.

SPEAKER_01

My husband's answer will be different. Uh he's always thinking just slightly bigger than me. Okay. Um, he's the visionary and our relationship. Uh, and I am, I guess I can't think of the exact term, but maybe more the realist. So I um but anyhow, um we have I have the Burn Boot Camp in Estero, and that one has been over a year and a half, so in our in our second year. The location in West Boca was purchased September of 2025. So we're over the six-month mark, so can't say it's new anymore, but we haven't hit the one year yet either. So um, and we're I knew I wanted to be a multi-unit owner when I before I bought the first burn boot camp. I fell in love with burn boot camp and Astero. Like that, I had a great experience in that gym. I understood uh the culture, I understood, I felt the community. I didn't know I was looking for community. I was one of those people who walked in the door, I was looking for consistency. We talk about the three C's at Burn Boot Camp, right? We talk about consistency, we talk about community, and we talk about challenge. I was very deconditioned because I had a child and working out inconsistently. So for me, I wasn't ready for a challenge yet, for sure. Just getting in there and being in the gym was gonna be challenging at that time. Um, I have a strong fitness background, so I knew I would get there, but at the moment, right, that I was not looking for challenge. I was believed I was looking for consistency because I was like, I need to be in a gym where I can work out regularly. I don't have to coordinate schedules with my husband because he's got after hours, before hours stuff. Like he's working all the time, and I don't want to add an extra layer of complexity to his life. Like he was, you know, the breadwinner. So like I need to find something that works. Child watch. Right. So we have we offered child watch, and I was like, this is fantastic. I'm coming for consistency because I can work out and I can bring Harper. This is the only place where I can get an excellent group fitness boutique workout, like high-intensity interval training workout, and bring my daughter. So I know I can be consistent. So I knew I was coming in for consistency, but the sneaky thing that happened was community was the community I didn't know I needed. And you know, I bet my husband, if you asked him the question, was he would say that I needed the community more than the consistency because he was like, You need to get out there, like you're doing everything for Harper, but what are you doing for you? You know, and so, anyways, um, I fell in love with the workouts, I fell in love with the community. I love like Harper loved going to burn boot camp. I she still does, I don't need to make that past tense, but um you know, we were all in as a family, like we just we loved it. And when I had the opportunity to purchase the Astero Gym, I was super excited because there were things I knew. I and kind of to answer one of your questions, there were things I knew I wanted to change, like if I had my hands in it, you know, like if I had the opportunity, I would do this.

SPEAKER_00

If I could do the work, right?

SPEAKER_01

And I could do this. Um and so and that one of those things was adding an extra extra camp on Saturday because Saturdays were so busy, they're still busy, even with an extra camp, but adding extra camp and providing child watch because I would go with Harper to work out in Naples or in Fort Myers, and I knew there were quite a few other members who would do that because I, you know, would see them on social media.

SPEAKER_00

Now they got rid of Universal unless you paid extra. I'm grandfathered in because I've been with you guys for so long, right? Which it's still worth it if you travel, but think about the additional stress if you didn't do that.

SPEAKER_01

Right. So yeah, I had a universal membership, so I would go to Naples or Fort Myers on Saturdays if I wanted to work out. But I didn't like leaving my community. Like and they're great gyms, don't get me wrong. Like they do a great job in Naples, they do a great job in Fort Myers. The workouts are great, but it's not my people. Right. You know, it's not home, and so like I wanted to work out in the world. It's like sleeping in a hotel bed. Right.

SPEAKER_00

It's like it's okay because it's a shelter, it does the job and it's a nice bed, right? But it's not my bed.

SPEAKER_01

So it was important to me. Like I wanted if it was within my control to keep our members in our own. Four walls as much as possible. I wanted to do that. Like I wanted to provide that for everybody. So those were the first easy decisions I made was you know, like expand Saturday camps, adding child watch to Saturday, and then of course it became more over time where there's so many families. We then added we got rid of women's only camps, which was a little scary decision. That one I knew I wanted to do, but I was nervous. I'm not gonna lie, because I I was like, I don't know if everyone's gonna be on board for this. I wasn't I voted no.

SPEAKER_00

I voted no, but I will say and speak to this. Okay, I don't really notice.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

There's an overwhelming amount of men who come in. It's the change.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

It's not what was changed, right? It's the change. And I know that about myself. So continue.

SPEAKER_01

So, anyways, it was important to me to make Burn Boot Camp as accessible to as many people as possible. That's I guess what's important to me in my core.

SPEAKER_00

Because men are just as equal as women in working out and getting them in. And if they couldn't go with their wives at the 8:30, 9:30, sometimes that's hard.

SPEAKER_01

In the beginning, I talked about people, right? I said that people are what's important to me. And when I worked in nonprofit, it was about saving as many lives as possible. Like connecting people so we can save as many lives as possible. But from boot camp, like in fitness, I'm like, I want to have as many people as possible feel the change of taking care of yourself. Like I want them to know what it feels like to be part of something that's sustainable, that's gonna make them healthier and happier. I just want to make as many people healthier and happier as possible. And so, and I want to remove as many barriers as possible. And I believe that that's what burn boot camp is all about, right? Is removing as many barriers as possible to like an excellent fitness product, right? And so I wanted to level that up as much as possible. So, yes, I made it so we could have men anytime. That was kind of a bold choice, but it you know, it went well, all things considered, you know, maybe tiny slight friction at first, but um overall it was it was good, and now I know that anyone who wants to work out can work out. And when I see full families walk into burn, like nothing makes me happier. I don't know if I should say nothing makes me happier, but one of the things that makes me the most happy about burn boot camp is when I see a whole family walk in together, like a mom, a dad, and a kid. I'm just like, this is what it's all about. Like it's all about like making this possible because when I had Harper, I was like, what am I gonna do? Like wellness is very important to me. Fitness is super important to me. It has been my whole life, and I felt like I couldn't find my flow, you know, on my own. And I'd always loved group fitness, and I'd always so it was just I just really believe in not just making it possible for everybody to live a happier, healthier life, but also when you see the kids following in their parents' footsteps, that's like the next really awesome part that I like from like the members' perspective, anyways, is seeing the kids want to emulate their parents. Right, right, want to be a part of it. It's really so like it's inspiring the next generation, which is really amazing and important to me too, because like there's so many sedentary activities in this world, like we're becoming so engrossed in I know I should have had two walking desks right now, which we can be out of breath when we're talking. You know, everything's virtual and remote, and like people are just disconnected these days, and I feel like people are more sedentary than they have been in the past. So bringing people together in person to do something that's gonna make them happier and healthier, I'm just all about it. I'm all about it.

SPEAKER_00

And you're very spot on, you know. When you so at Integrative Concierge, I do what you do with fitness, I do with overall health and lifestyle. And so when you speak to that and your heart speaks to that, I'm like, yep. I would love to see people get better, and fitness is a huge component. Food is a huge component. Absolutely. Seeing the change in a family and a mom and a dad while the kids are young, that's gonna make the most impact on our society. Because if they see parents doing it, then parents are gonna stop bringing the things into the home that they shouldn't eat. Right. And they are going to bring things they should eat, and they're gonna be active and change every aspect of that. Like, hey, we're gonna get up and go to the gym. Hey, we're gonna go for a walk because these are my off days because I need active recovery, right? Right? Right. So you see all of this, and the change isn't just impacting the members, but like you said, the next generation. So when you speak about like this is what drives me, and this is the implementation implementation that I wanted to do, and and this is everything. Like, how would you say in the future, right? What could you see this growing into for you? Thank you for asking that follow-up question because I realized I only answered the first half of your question earlier.

SPEAKER_01

No, I love it. Because I talked more about what got me into it, into the first one, and not so much about kind of what brought me to the second and uh and what's to come. So thank you for circling back on that. So again, when I when the second gym came to fruition, it was again an opportunity like my husband had found, and he's like, This opportunity might not come up again, and we knew we wanted to impact as many lives as possible through fitness and wellness. So I was not quite ready, I would say, at the time to take the plunge into a second location. Personally, uh, it was it felt too soon to me, but it was one of those situations where if it didn't happen, that opportunity wasn't gonna be there in the future, so I had to rip off the band-aid, as they say, and be brave and jump in sooner than I wanted to. Because I knew this is something I wanted to do. It's just the timing didn't feel right, so I had to be bold. Uh and so, and so here we are with a second, and there is intentions of having more. When um I purchased West Boca, it did come with rights to territories on the east side of Florida. So I have rights to three other territories kind of circling our West Boca location. Um, but right now the priority is stabilizing that location and growing that location before I would consider adding another one to the portfolio.

SPEAKER_00

It's like having one kid, jumping to two kids. Uh, let's wait on the nerd.

SPEAKER_01

So Astero is a very healthy, thriving gym. So when West Boca opportunity came around, it felt too soon emotionally, but I knew like I knew that Astero was in a healthy financial business position where you know, like I wasn't going to be compromising anything right by taking on another business interest. Um, but I will say Boca right now is not in that same position, right? Like we need to make sure that these both of these gyms are very healthy and thriving before we would add another one to the portfolio.

SPEAKER_00

And so bringing your heart into that is what will change it. Because didn't you say in our conversation a long time ago that it was a corporate-owned one? So a corporate-owned versus an individual-owned is gonna make a completely different community.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, it was corporate-owned and remotely owned by corporate for uh, and I don't mean I mean out of state. So, and that was the case for five years or so. So uh the franchise had even said themselves that they believed what they needed was someone locally, you know, bring the heart to operate it so that there was more grassroots involvement, more passion, you know, like more local passion, more connection, you know. So um, so yes, there's definitely lots of investment to be made um of time and yes, and talent, I guess, and boka to get that where I want it to be. Uh, we're in a transition period right now and things are moving in the right direction, so I'm excited about what's what's ahead. Uh, there is a time stamp on the the rights to the other locations, so but I'm if the timing's not right, then you're not gonna jeopardize the communities you've built. Exactly. And I tell I I've I've told the folks here in Estero and the folks in West Boga that same thing, right? Like, if I'm keeping impulse on everything and I will not over-leverage us at the expense of these gyms, I have families, members, team members, staff who are all part of this, who are relying on this for a variety of different reasons, whether it's um like a paycheck, it's peace of mind, it's wellness, it's I mean, there are there are lots of different reasons why this is important to let's see, over 600 people. Probably almost 700 when you think about all the staff and everything, you know. So um that's a lot of lives that are at stake. And so I take that very seriously. So I will not be I I although I do want to have more locations for sure, it will only be done when the time is right. And uh if that means that I those rights go away, like that's fine because there's nothing to say that someone is gonna snatch them up and then build right away anyways. I can always I can always go back to them, you know. As you can see, as you see fit. And to be honest, you know, like it I had always envisioned m my second location or or third once I had West Boca to be on this side of the state, like closer to home, because I the first two locations were resales, meaning that they were previously owned by other people. So I acquired them and then, you know, have adjusted things as I see fit. Um, but the next one would be a ground up situation. And so I do feel like having that closer to home would be wise because you know, just accessibility, you know, like being able to be there and check in on the development connection and all of that would be it would give us our best uh possible success rate. But who knows? I mean, who knows at West Book, you know, the Westpoke or east side of of the state. Too too soon to tell, but um so yeah, there's there's stuff ahead. Um, but we've got a few things to work on in the meantime.

SPEAKER_00

So let's let's jump into kind of like okay, so I'm listening to this podcast, I'm not a bird member, and I really like this community thing you're talking about, like or like the consistency. I like all this stuff. Um what when you speak to like the potential gym member, the potential family member that wants to sign on and like encourage them in ways that maybe you do to your other staff and and members?

SPEAKER_01

I would say don't let fear stop you because the hardest thing to do is walk in that door. And once you're in there, everything gets easier. Now, granted, the workouts are challenging, but the the trainers are certified and they know to how to meet you where you're at. They know how to challenge you where you're at in your fitness journey. Um, and I know like they're gonna know your name, they're gonna be expecting you when you walk through the door. They will make sure that you feel welcome and they are going to get to know you personally. They're gonna pair you with somebody in the gym so you don't have to work out alone. Like, I don't I can't think of another gym I've been to when I work, I came in through the doors and they said, Okay, I want to introduce you to this person so that you have someone to work out next to. If you have any questions or you just like need a helping hand, they're your go-to. I'm your trainer, I'm gonna be running this whole camp, but there's someone for you to talk to. Um, if you have any questions and I can't be there at that moment, that's huge. It's huge to know that it's because it's scary to walk into a new gym, especially if you're coming by yourself and you have if you feel like you're maybe a little bit out of shape, like you're not at the fitness level you want to be in, that's a scary thing to walk through those doors. Even when you're in shape, like it's a whole you're walking into a whole community. Uh-huh. And sometimes it can feel a little intimidating because some of our members have known each other for a long time. So they're friendly but with each other. But um just know that we go, we make the extra effort to make you feel welcome on your first day and to give you support on day one so that you're not really by yourself, even though in your head you feel like you're doing it alone.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I can speak to that. Oh, yeah. So when I first started, I went and I was invited by my friends. And so they're there, and I'm just like, but they still front desk. I can't even remember who it was. I feel like I was like, you know, like a tunnel, like tunnel vision. You come in and you're like, oh my gosh, I'm out of shape. I don't know what to do here. And you like try to bulldoze your way away from everybody.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_00

But they didn't let me. They're like, hey Nicole, you know, do you have somebody here that and I'm like, actually, I'm and so they introduced me to a couple people and said, Well, you can work out with them too, or I just wanted to let you know, right, you know, this is Susie or this is Joe, whoever that was. I don't remember. I was so I remember my partner, uh, Izzy.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I love Izzy, yes, because I I'm super competitive, but I like I I think I mentioned that I was very deconditioned when I first worked out at Brambo camp because I had had Harper and not been consistently workout. Um, and they told me, Oh, this is Izzy, you know, she got started a while ago, and now she's working working out two a day, like she's working out twice on cardio days. And I was like, oh, so that's the expectation. We got okay, I got it. So then I was like super competitive, like, uh, and I went way too hard on my first day, and I was it was a lot. Um, but and it actually it took me a little bit after my first because I came in in August. I remember this was August, and then I was like, I got a sinus infection right afterwards because I just went way too hard, and like my body was just like depleted, and then I was like, I still love it though. Protein. I know that's all I can hear. And then I went back in in October and signed up for the whole thing. I was like, all right, let's do it. Like I'm signing a membership, and I think the rest is history after that.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, I got in on the $69. I still haven't worked out twice in a day before. I still haven't worked out twice. And I still only go three days a week, okay, everybody. So that for me is a lot. But the membership, like, I tried it on the trial, and I was like, I'm just gonna do the trial and I'm done. Oh no, it was like I found my family, I really like it here. Like everything that I tried to find wrong with it, I was like, there's not anything wrong with this. Okay, I guess I'm sign, I gotta make a way to sign up. Right. And that is, I feel the difference. When you walk into a normal gym, whether it's group fitness or not group fitness, it's almost like it takes every expectation that you've had, and it it kind of kicks one out at a time, like that one's there, that one's there, that expectation's met, that expectation's met. And then pretty soon you're like, I guess we're gonna have to get married because you fit every mold that I have. I'm not I'm not speaking about my husband, but you know, right, but that's where I feel like that was different because I've tried a lot of things, I've tried a lot, but this is the only one I've been a member for the longest I've ever been a member anywhere, and I've been most consistent, but that's why. Right. So, like it's not just you go in, you know, I really like the fact, and and maybe you can speak to what's to come, but of you're doing something quarterly with you know, and and maybe monthly, kind of speak to that. Like we just had mommy and me, right, and it was adorable. And my son is like, what are we gonna do the next one? And so that is the heart of kind of where you're going with that, too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, yes. So events are an important part of what we do, and they help build the community and they help bring us all together, and we have a lot of um members in different points of their life, right? So we have a lot of families with young kids because we offer child watch. So obviously there's young families who come in, and then we have a lot of older um or more mature members as well, who their kids are grown up and they are just here to get a workout in and hang, you know, socialize with their friends. So at first, one of my goals, because I was a young mom, was like, we need to do more family camps. People were like, I loved that. And so at first, the first year I was like, we're gonna do at least two a year. And of course, now I'm like, we're doing this quarterly, and we're going to um it's very structured where it's one per quarter, and we tie it to a holiday, so it's fun and it's festive. So, yes, we just had the the mommy and me one. The next one will historically was for um Halloween, and but this year I think we're gonna do like a fall harvest because I have a potential, like I have a partner that we're gonna work with and bring a cow and stuff. It's gonna be very fun. Like not a live cow, like a costume cow, but you know, it'll be cool for the kids, anyways. Just you know, sneak peek. And then, of course, we have one um around Christmas time for the holidays, and then the other one we have a St. Patrick's Day, so we have four of those. So that was important to have family events, and then also after doing our member review, because of course it's important to find out what's important to our membership, right? Like, because I was uh thinking about what I want like what I think is important. I'm sorry, I just touched my mic. Hopefully I can still hear me.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but there's a whole another side of the membership that that doesn't necessarily resonate with, right? So what are we gonna do for them? Right. So we had done a social hour, kind of like a brewery event, and that was very popular, so we decided to create a quarterly series for that as well. So we call it the Wind Down Wednesday. Yeah, so that's quarterly, and it is I think the third Wednesday of the month. Um the last, yes, the last month of the quarter, yeah. The third Wednesday of them.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, and you post that all on Burma Sero. Yes. Okay. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and so we had one at Sugar Shack, and then we have one, the next one is coming up at a brewery. So, and that will happen, of course, two more times this year. And we had had some requests. We do some 5K's, some early 5 a.m. 5Ks. Yeah, yeah. Um, there were some requests for some non-5 a.m. 5Ks.

SPEAKER_00

Um yeah, I can see that.

SPEAKER_01

Um, as well as a beach day. So we're looking in June actually at doing a run on the beach. So maybe Bonita Beach. I have to chart the course, which so you know, hopefully I can get this all sorted out really quickly. But um doing a run, maybe Bonita Beach on the path. So parking in the parking lot, running in the where the homes are, and then running back on the beach, and then having like a a hangout after that. So that could be like a hybrid. So now we have like a quarterly series for families, we have a quarterly series for people who don't have necessarily have children, but also a lot of people do bring their kids, like they could bring their kids to Sugar Shack or to the brewery, I guess, if they wanted to. Yeah. Um, but it's intended to be more of like an adult focused series, and then we have like some of these hybrids, um like the um beach 5K run. And then there's just other things, you know, sprinkled with that. We did Well Fest. That was more about kind of getting out to the community, letting people know who we are, trying to find new uh members. So we try to do things for our existing members to build the community, and then we also try to have some events that are focused more on acquisition and so more people in the community know who we are, what we do, and bring them into the community.

SPEAKER_00

And they can become part of the family.

SPEAKER_01

Right, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah. So I know we're coming to an end, you know, because we all have busy schedules. Right. But is there anything that you didn't get a chance to speak to that maybe uh you wanted to speak about for uh one to two minutes?

SPEAKER_01

That's the hardest question you've asked yet. No, I don't think so. I don't think so. Thank you so much for the opportunity to be able to talk and um you know, I really appreciate it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I hope to do a lot more of these. I think as business owners, we don't get to show our heart a lot. And so we're busy in the back end of everything, you know, trying to get our out of girls because that's important to us.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_00

We need to know. That our business is working successfully. So when we get to talk about our passions, it's not usually like we're not able to, right? We don't get to have the one-to-ones that we necessarily want to. And I know you don't get to because you have so many members and so many um things pulling at you, family and all these other endeavors. But I will give one shout out. Anyone who has a towel. So I gotta I gotta say a quick story. So the other day I was there working out, and all of a sudden I'm not listening at the end because I'm dying, right? Because you work out and you're dying. They're like, oh, and by the way, please return your towels because we're running out of them, and no, we're not gonna shame you, and you don't even have to wash them. And all of a sudden I'm like, okay, and we do our two claps on two, and I walk out the door, and I have the towel. Yeah. And I'm like, I don't take towels. I think, I think subconsciously I was told to take that towel. So if anybody is listening, we are all gonna return our towels. Worked against us, and we will bring them back to burn boot camp so all of us will be able to have them. Nice, thank you. I know I thought it would be funny to talk about that. I was like, oh, admission online. Nobody listened to this, nobody listens to the end of it, anyways, right? No, I'm just kidding. Um, it has been really nice to have you on here. Yeah, it's been a pleasure.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you for having me. Thank you for your patience. Well, we sorted out schedules as well. I appreciate it.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you for my patience for ill communication.

SPEAKER_02

No, you're fine.

SPEAKER_00

You're fine. Well, signing off today. Um, everybody, I hope you learned something. I hope you join Burn Boot Camp and you can see both of us working out. We can work out together. Um, and yeah, see see each other at the next few events coming up. Sounds good. All right, signing off. Have a great day, everybody.
