SPEAKER_09

Welcome to the HD Experience, your store for sports on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Here's your host, Hunter Dawkins.

SPEAKER_03

My name is Hunter Dawkins, and I'm the host of the HD Experience. This is the 28th episode of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Sports Podcast, sponsored by the Gazebo Gazette, the Harrison County Independent Newspaper, the wire realty agent Stephanie Megowitz, the Miller Whitmer chiropractic, Jeffrey Hullham for Congress, and we're always in the U.S. Marine Inc. Studio. I'm here with my wonderful producer of the show, Jeff Clark. Jeff is a well-accomplished award-winning journalist, South Alabama beat writer, and the director of the Harrison County Senior Serfes. Jeff, coming back from Arizona. Everything's good. Everything's uh hand on right.

SPEAKER_05

So I uh I've been downgraded. I always like when you introduce me as your good friend first, and then nah, man. I'm just kidding. Um glad you're back, dude. You had a big weekend, you've been in Pensacola, covering USM, covering tournament. Um if you told me 28 weeks later, which is like a scary zombie movie, that uh we'd be sitting here working on our 28th episode, Gulfport would have a state title in football, and Stanislaus would have a state title in basketball. Man, I I I would have never never thought that. Not that I didn't think either program, those programs weren't uh worthy, but here we are, man.

SPEAKER_03

You'd win a lot of money if you were placing bets on that. That's something of course in both aspects, Jeff, coaching is is the big thing, you know. And I know especially people talk about, you know, in colleges and in pros and how big coaches are. High school, it's more than anything. Uh it's all about you know who your your kids are interacting with, you know, how your parents feel about, you know, uh just to be honest with you, Jeff, that's the reason that I'm not coaching anymore. And not necessarily that I would give up this job, but it's because of of you know, some things that I had going on where I just couldn't really commit to being the best in the parents' eyes or anything as such. And I wasn't a bad coach. Hell, I've got a state championship rig here, you know, and I've got uh a lot of good accomplishments with the teams that I can do.

SPEAKER_05

Just old school, man. Discipline, making them run. Kids don't want to do that anymore. I got you.

SPEAKER_03

That's right, that's right. And you know, you have to be able to convey that message with kids nowadays. And uh, I'm telling you, you know, the introduction to our podcast every week now, at least until the start of high school football season, I want that golf port thing in. It's just every week, that's just it's that energy, it's that all the buildup where it starts from right now, all the way until that December game. That's that's the energy that everybody wants to have.

SPEAKER_05

And I'm I'm I'm hoping we get uh, you know, hey, pass made it to the two gotten deep in the playoffs. It was it was a good year, man. You know, it was it was good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and especially not only with Coach Stock still over here, and but also Coach Sykes and Coach Lumpkin have done done a great job, and our volleyball program has done a great job. It's soccer. Everything we've got in athletic programs has been successful.

SPEAKER_05

Dude, I watched Pass High Softball um just like put it on Pearl River Central. You know, it was one of those rare occasions where the bats and the pitching just aligned with the stars. It was it was it was good, man. They were they were hitting like crazy. Um, you know, they they won 10 to nothing, kept Pearl River Central scoreless, uh great pitch and great bats. It was it was a great game. Awesome game.

SPEAKER_03

I've always been a big fan of Coach DJ Elkins. He is absolutely a great man. He does a great job of setting here from Greenville.

SPEAKER_05

So, yes, sir. Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

He sets the standard right, and you know, and I think his his relationship with the team and with the parents and everything, it's another aspect of coaching that that is absolutely much needed.

SPEAKER_05

And I could see that, man. I mean, just the dialogue you had with with the girls, his attention to detail, uh, all of it, you know, it's like, yeah, that's that's a good coach right there. You know, so it was awesome. And I'm looking forward to covering more uh thoughtball and pass high uh baseball. I'm going to uh bring on my my favorite coach, Coach uh Matt Statz, Matt Toth, and I'll let you two chat it up and I'll be back at the end of the show.

SPEAKER_10

SPEAKER_03

And I would love to introduce my friend and one of the experts in high school football across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Who fans students, coaches, and scouts follow through Twitter and Facebook. Mad Stats, how are you, my friend?

SPEAKER_02

Hunter, it's always great to be back on the HD experience. You know, we just we moved the clocks, you know, an hour ahead, which means we're officially one hour closer to the football season starting. So it's great to be on your show.

SPEAKER_03

That's right. And as you saw last week, Matt, we had the introduction with the Gulfport State Championship, the radio clip that we had with myself and Harold Rose, you know, that last, that final play. And I really think if we keep that on until the start of the high school football season, I think that's just gonna keep bringing that adrenaline. And it's gonna keep, you know, what everybody wants. Everybody wants that gold ball.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yes, yes, most definitely. Uh all across uh the coast, uh definitely bring that gold ball back, not just in in football, but you know, just here recently in basketball. Yes, football is ready to be kicking off as the weather is getting nice, and again, spring football is just ahead.

SPEAKER_03

Matt, talk to me about the schedules. You know, I know there has been a release of schedules this week. Uh, you know, do we have pretty much all throughout the Gulf Coast?

SPEAKER_02

Unfortunately not, Hunter. Right now, I have uh nine, nine schedules of the 25 teams. There's always was 24 teams until Christian Collegiate uh moved up to 11 man. So they were our they are our 25th team. That's the six coastal counties, is what we cover and consider coast football. So out of the 25, nine of them uh have been released. And I do have the the rankings. Every year I come up with the toughest schedule, the coast toughest schedule. I say every year, the past few years. Ocean Springs, two years ago, last year, West Harrison, you know, had the toughest schedule heading into the season just based on prior uh seasons of the teams that they're playing. So it's posted on my Facebook page and all across social media, just type in Golf Coast uh high school football or coast football. But I do have a ranking system that I do have, and I have the eight schools ranked. I'm sorry, the nine schools ranked currently on who has the toughest schedule right now. Again, just nine teams uh posting. And out those nine teams, I can run off as far as just the teams itself uh with them, which has Stone, Long Beach, Pascus Gian, George County, D'Iberville, Pickyune, who was the first team to release, Goshe, West Harrison, and Harrison Central are the nine teams that have released their schedule thus far.

SPEAKER_03

So far, who do you think has the toughest from what the the aspect of last year? What what's your thoughts?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well, the system that I that I use, it's a point system, and it gives you, you know, so many points for how many road games a team has, who they're playing, you know, if they're playing a team that's been pretty good over the last couple seasons. Um, you know, so and then against teams that are struggling, you know, you get one point for that. So in the in the system I have, 38 to 40 is a brutal schedule. If you get a score of 38 to 40, and then it goes down to 26 to 28, which is a uh not as strong schedule. So to go off just uh from the ninth position, again, just nine teams. Long Beach, you know, is is the ninth right now. Stone is eighth. Pascus Jan is 30, has uh is a seventh toughest schedule. George County, D'Iverville's fifth, Pick Eun fourth, Gaucher third, second, uh West Harrison. You know, they have tough uh home games, Harrison Central, St. Martin, road games this year. They're playing all the big teams on the road this year. Coach Quincy Patrick, Golfport, Ocean Springs, Biloxi, D'Iverville. They had the toughest schedule last year, and uh they'll host Harrison Central and St. Martin. The number one team right now out of just the nine teams that have released uh tough home games, Hancock, D'Irville, Biloxi. And I'm speaking of Harrison Central with their new head coach. Um and the road games, they play, you know, Gulfport, Ocean Springs on the road. Yes, they play St. Martin, who's pretty good uh moving up from last year. They're a decent team this year, the Yellow Jackets. So right now they're at 38 points, just based on the system that I have. They have the toughest schedule. Again, just nine nine schedules in there uh release. So we look to get more in there. A lot of teams are trying to come up with these non-region games. Uh that's why I'm assuming that they're delayed schedule release. So again, nine schedules have been uh released there, and they are the toughest one right now is Harrison Central.

SPEAKER_03

Uh what do we have? Any schedules for spring games? I know these have been sort of lack of reluctance as so far yet, but talk to me about if you have any of those spring game schedules yet.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I mean, uh Pascal, not necessarily games. They have a practice schedule, which is coming up uh there next month. Of course, we're in March now, so they're coming up. The only official game that I've seen that I shared is in May, and it's at play it at USM, and it's gonna be West Harrison at Stone. Um, no, I say at Stone versus Stone at USM on May the 8th. So that is really the only official game, spring game that I have seen. Uh, of course, fans, if they they see one or coaches, please tag us in it, you know, at Coach Football. But that is the only spring game, you know, that I have seen officially. Um, swinging over just the slightly to the all-star uh coaches were released, uh Hunter for the games, yes, in December. The North South and Bernard Blackwell All-Star game. The coaches have been released here in March, and there's just one coach uh from the coach, which is somewhat surprising. You can, of course, you want to you have to put your name in there, so maybe coaches did not, but from the north-south representing obviously the south, OSHA Springs coach Bramblant will be an assistant coach on the South team, which will be playing, you know, in golf port. Uh Suman, I believe, probably still at Milner Stadium in that all-star game. So to get all the coaches' names, uh, it is again it's on the Facebook page or on X at Coach Football, but they did release the All-Star uh Coaches selection. So, you know, they're already preparing, they're already starting to look at names uh for the All-Star Games, which again will happen in December, the second and third week of December.

SPEAKER_03

And speaking of Gulf Court, I haven't heard anything different. Of course, as you're probably aware, Coach uh Matt Walters, Gulf Courts A D, has uh has uh stepped aside. I'm not necessarily sure why. I'm still, you know, having talked with him about it, but uh but as far as that goes, I don't really know if it's gonna be at Milner or if it's gonna be at the new stadium. We really haven't found that out yet. Do you hear anything about the the A D position over Gulfport?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, you know, I posted that they it was just this past week, uh, that they did release the position or or uh posted it looking for a new athletic director. Um and there was a lot of comments. There was a lot of comments saying, you know, what happened to you know Matt Witt, which was the current athletic director. Well, I'm looking here in front of me that you know Addy Walters and she posted out because everybody was speculating. What happened? What happened? She posted out four days ago to every to everyone speculating, you can blame me for Matt leaving. That's Addie Waters. I need more close, I move more closer to my family due to some serious health concerns. And if you know Matt at all, you know he puts God and family above everything. Trust me, this is not an easy decision. And I am unfortunately happened to leave a job I absolutely love as well. Please keep us in your prayers as we move out of state. We move, we made some amazing friends and made some wonderful memories and have absolutely loved living on the coast. Everyone has been so wonderful to us. So there's your answer there, uh Hunter, because I didn't know until she posted it, because I, you know, people were asking, and I don't I didn't have the answer where he went or what was happening. So she saw it and she posted that. So unfortunately, it is due to family, uh, some serious health concerns in her family. That is Addie Walters.

SPEAKER_03

Obviously, we we we wish them the best, of course, Matt. Um, but anyway, uh, as far as it as it goes from there, do we have, I mean, it sounds to me like most of the schedules that have been set up are um are at least from the lower level schools. Do we have any top level 7A schools available yet?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yes, yes. We do we do have um the ones I mentioned the top school right now is D'Aberville, if you want to say it in 7A. They do have uh they're they're fifth ranked again out of the nine teams that are ranked as far as toughest schedule. They will have home games against Pascagoula and St. Martin. They do go on the road this year. Again, I say to big the big teams, which you know, defending region champions, Golfport, they're at Golfport, at Ocean Springs, and then Biloxi with their new head coach, Harrison Central with their new head coach. Those are four tough road games in the region uh that has been released by the uh Red Rebels there with their and they they posted a video, Harrison Central. You know, they're getting more active on social media with their new head coach there. But Dyeville has posted their uh schedule. That is only top team as far as in the 7A. Pick Yoon did release their schedule, their fourth uh toughest right now, just out of the nine teams. They will play, they will host Golfport and Pascagoula. They'll play on the road at OSHA Springs, Biloxi, and Hancock. So again, they're the defending region champions. They are trying to go after Stone, who has six straight region titles. Uh Pick Eun is right there, Coach Stogner. So those are the uh team there that has released it, Pick Eun. Again, nine teams overall have released it. We mentioned uh earlier, seventh ranked Pascal won their first region title. Coach Stock still there did lose to eventual champion uh in Columbia. They do have home games against East Central St. Stanislaus, and then they'll play on the road at Purvis and West uh Marion. That is Pas Christian Pirates.

SPEAKER_03

Matt, my friend, we appreciate you coming on with us and tell everybody how they can reach you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, again, you can Google and just type Coast Football if you want more than football uh information, Golf Coast High School Sports on Facebook and on X. And you know, basketball just got over with. We'd like to congratulate you know the team that made it up there to both Biloxi teams, girls and boys, unfortunately, it did not win. Harrison Central girls lost in the state championship, but 3A, St. Stannis loss, bringing home the gold ball, first time in 11 years, 2015. And you and you're familiar with St. Stannis Lost Hunter. So uh congratulations.

SPEAKER_03

Actually, it was 15 years, Matt. I'm sorry. Yes, I coached on that team too. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, that's when the the player, his dad was coaching them, right? And then the player is now he just coached the Rock and Shaws. That's right, that's right. So and Pascagoula won the 6A state uh championship. So I know I'm a football guy and football is king on the coast, but hey, I still keep my eye out on all the sports, and congratulations to those who made it up to Jackson for the final four. And again, Rockin' Shaws and Pascagoula for bringing home the gold football. And I know the coast has something to say. Well, it's it's done said it and winning those championship uh trophies. So certainly appreciate you having me on, Hunter, and look forward to being on uh here the next time as spring football is moving closer. We thank you, Matt. You take care. All right, stats out.

SPEAKER_03

I would like to welcome my next guest who just got home from winning the 2026 MHSAA 3A basketball state championship in Jackson this weekend with Coach Daniel Greaves. Coach Greaves, what way's it going? I'm doing well, my friend. Doing well, my friend. Coach Greaves, when you took over this team back in 2022, I believe I'm correct on that, right, Coach? Yes, yeah, the 21-22 season. What way did you develop the boys to get them to achieve the heights they did this weekend?

SPEAKER_07

Well, you know, it it we knew it was gonna be a lot of hard work. Um, but the the thing is that the first, you know, trying to establish what a winning culture is, and uh I had to to make sure that they knew that we weren't winning, um, but that didn't make us losers. So we we lost a lot of games those first couple years, but at no point in time were we losers, we were winners who were trying to figure out how to win. Um we knew it was gonna be a long process, but you know, we we kind of inherited a good opportunity where we had some seniors my first year who were who were ready to buy into what we were really trying to develop. And we had a big group of sophomores, you know, we only had about 11 or 12 kids in the program that first year. Um we had to, you know, get a couple kids who'd never really played to come out and uh to to come out just so that we could field um a JB and a varsity roster, but you know, uh how you do anything is how you do everything. And uh and so we just you know tried taking it day by day, doing things the right way, developing fundamentals and uh hitting the weight room, and we knew that eventually it was gonna pay off, but we just had to stay the course.

SPEAKER_03

How much influence did Southern Miss, current Southern Miss head coach, basketball coach and Jay Ladder, who not only coached in? High school, but he coached you in college at Southeastern. How much influence did he have on you, not only in your playing career, but in your coaching career? At least I'm sure you you talk to him every now and then about you know certain strategies and things to go by.

SPEAKER_07

Oh, yeah. I I've you know, I'm in a very unique position where I I'm blessed to have a wealth of knowledge around me. You know, um both my parents were coaches. I've I've got uh Jay and I talk weekly for going on you know five years. Uh last night, you know, they had a big win. And uh going into his press conference uh after the win, you know, uh Jennifer's wife of gave him the update, like no, they they they did it. So I had a really good conversation with him last night. Um and so it's just been it's been awesome to be able to have somebody like that that you can pick up the phone and bounce ideas off of. And and um, you know, you're always trying to find ways to grow professionally and basketball. Any any any good basketball coach will tell you that, you know, um you're stealing stuff all the time, you know, like what about this drill? What about this idea for weights or this structure for practice? So um being able to be on uh on the cutting edge on several different fronts, you know, he's been a huge influence in my life up to this point, um, personally and professionally.

SPEAKER_03

How does this feel winning a title with your father by your side, not only as a coach, but you as a player too?

SPEAKER_07

Um, you know, coaching is is is it's about relationships and um the relationships you build um, you know, with the the people around you, your community, your your school community, um, your coaches, your teammates. And um, I mean, there's no better relationship you can have than uh than than that uh as a young man than with your father. And you know, it's it was everything that uh that I I could have asked for. Um, you know, I he's been a huge influence uh since I've taken the job the last five years. You know, he was coaching in Illinois, uh, you know, state runner up, and then followed that up with the state championship. So uh there were days and nights that I'm I'm sending him my film and I'm asking him, you know, what do you think? And uh to have him be able to retire and come down to help. I mean, it it's it's made the entire season for me. Whether we had a gold ball at the end of it or not, it's an opportunity that I I think any coach can tell you um that's a win right there.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. Talk to me about the relationship you have with your assistants who were previously were your teammates, a lot of them.

SPEAKER_07

Oh, take me out the picture, and and I I'm gonna double down with I think we have the best coaching staff in the state. Um, and I think one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the state, even if you get into the college level. I mean, Jared Rigby and Ramon Tate are both Standard Sloss guys, and and we both have uh, or all three of us, you know, those two guys have been with me all five years, and those are former, you know, Stannislaus champions, junior college players, division one players. And so to be able to have those guys day in and day out in your practices and and in your game prep is phenomenal. And then you throw in Jason Forte, who's a dandy dozen standout at Bay Springs, whose son's on our team, and you know, he's a 10-year pro and uh veteran and you know knows knows the ins and outs of what it means to be a champion and in a professional approach of how to treat your body. Um, you know, and then and then my father who's got you know four decades of championship winning experience. I mean, if if I didn't make it to the game, you know, you still got four Division I caliber guys who are all hitting the players individually at every timeout, at every dead ball. And um the blessing, the blessing that I have as a coach that I've got those kinds of eyes and ears um around my program is is phenomenal.

SPEAKER_03

Coach, final question. Now, I know you're losing one of your best players with senior Max Beria, but talk to me about what do you have coming back because I heard from through the grapevine that you guys have a lot coming back and help building the program from the ground up.

SPEAKER_07

Oh, yeah. Um, you know, we're we're losing, we're losing two uh two seniors who played significant minutes this year. Um, three seniors total. So of our 15-man Barcy DeRoster, we got 12 guys coming back. And um, you know, but the the the big thing is is that uh, you know, when when we talk about culture building and program development, I mean our JV team has lost six games in five years. Um we're gonna have more freshmen coming into the program next year uh from our feeder schools and from our middle school that you know is more than than we had total in our program my first year. So the the program is has now started taking off in the sense of it's it's exciting to be a part of. And so uh, you know, in the words of Jay Lagner, you know, you don't rebuild, you reload. And uh, I mean, we've got guys who didn't play as many minutes this year as they as they wanted, who are chomping at the bit to to help fill those gaps in playing time and and uh and contribute for us for next year. You know, as of today, you know, we're we're no longer uh uh just playing for it, we're now defending state champions. And so it's time to start defending it.

SPEAKER_03

Coach, we definitely appreciate you being on, and we congratulate you again. And anytime you want to be on, you let me know.

SPEAKER_07

Hunter, I appreciate the time and the the platform for me to be able to speak about the success of uh our our wonderful school and our tremendous kids. Take care, coach. All right, Hunter, I appreciate it.

SPEAKER_03

My next guest is Evelyn Van Pelt, the owner, publisher of the iconic Rebel Walk magazine and website for more than a decade. Evie, how are you?

SPEAKER_08

I'm doing great. Sorry for my schedule kind of flip-flop.

SPEAKER_03

No worries, no worries. All right, so tell me what you know about the NCAA in in Trinidad. What's going on with Trinidad Chambles? You know, of course, we had the uh the apparently the state court that ruled in his favor, but now apparently the NCAA is making an appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

SPEAKER_08

Well, I yes, to the Mississippi Supreme Court. Um, I think a lot of people, well, I don't know. I think some people were kind of surprised that the NCAA appealed. Uh, really not that surprised. But um so the preliminary injunction last month came after Judge Whitwell ruled uh, you know, against the NCAA. And so there was a likelihood that if it if the case proceeded, that Trinidad would win on the merits of the case, which is all they needed to kind of get a preliminary injunction. So um the NCAA opted to appeal that decision. And but I will say, just because they have filed the appeal with the Mississippi Supreme Court doesn't actually mean that the Mississippi Supreme Court is gonna hear the case. I mean, I think it's kind of like, you know, uh in the U.S. Supreme Court, they don't hear everything that people, you know, request that they hear. So um I think probably the odds of that court overturning Judge Whitwell's ruling are probably really not very not very high for the NCAA.

SPEAKER_03

In the week ago's combine, did any rebel player, old miss player, did anybody stand out that got potential draft stock?

SPEAKER_08

Um, yes, I think so. I uh Ole Miss wide receiver Dajon Strickling did really well. I think a lot of people were surprised he ran a 43640 and official time, and I think that that got a lot of people's attention. And so I think from just from some of the things that I heard, um he he opened some eyes and I think he had a good broad jump, a 36-inch vertical. Um yeah, so I think they come up with something RAS, the relative athletic score, which kind of puts a player's overall day at the combine in perspective to others at his position over the last like 39 years. And his 9.88 out of a possible 10 put him, I think they said 47th out of almost 4,000 receivers in the last 39. So that kind of puts it in a little perspective. He had a good combine.

SPEAKER_03

Now, I maybe I heard something and maybe I didn't. You have to clarify with me, but is there a little shakeup in the old miss coaching staff recently?

SPEAKER_08

Um, well, I I don't know so much a coaching shakeup. Um, I know yeah, yeah. Well, I think um uh Patrick Tony was hired as um uh let's see, I believe he was the defensive, he was gonna be like an assistant coach of defense. And um, and so they've actually, I think we're we're um we have added a because I think Tony, I don't think he was there very long, and I think he's gonna be getting a job now again in the pros, but Ole Miss has hired former linebacker Lanier Gothi to the defensive staff, and so he's an NFL and yeah, he's a for actually he's a former Chucky Mullins Award winner at Ole Miss. And so I think you see him kind of blending a modern defense with a little bit of Ole Miss tradition. Um, he was a team captain his senior season, and I think that you know he's gonna be a good good choice. And again, you know, anytime you can bring a Chucky Mullins Award winner back, that's gotta be a good thing.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely, absolutely. Talk to me about the Ole Miss. I mean, I know basketball is not really much of an idea, at least from the men's perspective. Talk about the women's basketball. They seem like they're moving in the right direction right now.

SPEAKER_08

Absolutely. I tell you what, they they had a little rough run at the end of the season, you know, after Winterstorm Fern, and they had to play four games in seven days because of the rearrangement of the schedule to kind of get those games in that they missed. And so they lost some. They lost they lost bad to South Carolina, they lost to Florida. I mean, they lost some games at the end that maybe South Carolina was expected, but Florida was not, and then I think they lost to AM, and that was not. However, that being said, they're they've been without uh Syracino since their star defender since the Tennessee game. She got hurt. But yo, as Yo Coachio is able to do, she is able to take the pieces that she has, and like she said, it's almost like a whole new new team because she she had to you know make some adjustments and such. And so they head to the NCAA tournament and they beat Auburn 7357. They beat Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt was the number two seed in the tournament. They beat them by 11. I think they were up by as much as 30 at one point, and then they did fall yesterday to Texas. Um, Texas actually pounded South Carolina today, so that was unusual. And Texas takes the SEC tournament. But um, Ole Miss came on very, very, very, very strong in the end, kind of look like them themselves. And now they're waiting. The women's selection Sunday show is March 15th, and they'll find out where they go when the tournament opens March 21st.

SPEAKER_03

Coach Yo definitely out of the uh the media at least has definitely been uh been on her game this year, and uh I think I think she might be attempting to step it up for the Rebels program, don't you?

SPEAKER_08

Oh, I absolutely think so. And you know, there's a couple of things here. Um, she is generous and magnanimous, she gives other teams and coaches and players their the respect that she feels they deserve, but she is competitive as heck. And you know, you probably saw she went on Stephen A. Smith's show and got Stephen A. Smith, then came to Oxford for a game. And that was pretty unusual. I think everybody, you know, even Keith Carter had invited him to come, but but he came at Yo's invitation. So a lot of positive press from that uh for Oxford and for Ole Miss. And then, like I say, you know, just the work that she's doing with that women's team is remarkable. She said in her post-game press conference uh yesterday that she said Ole Miss may not be considered one of the blue blood. She said, in you know, like in the SEC, and she said, but every team we have and every coach we have will roll their sleeves up and get to work. And she said, and you'll always find Ole Miss in the mix. You know, you can you can always find them in the mix just because we're we're hard workers.

SPEAKER_03

Final question for you, Evie.

SPEAKER_08

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Baseball. Now we saw some struggle a few a few days ago, but then this last week we've seen some positives. Where do where's the the mound they stand from where the rebels stand from the mound?

SPEAKER_08

You know what? I think they're um, and I said this before, and I folks might have thought I was crazy. You know, the the the rotation is Hunter Elliott on Friday, Cag Townsend on Saturday, and Will Libert on Sunday. And actually, Hunter has been the one that's has kind of needed to tighten things up a little bit, which nobody would have thought that would be the case. But if that's your your biggest quote unquote concern on the mound, I think they're gonna be fine. I was in Houston watching them play, and that's where they dropped a couple of games. Um, they're gonna be in Austin this coming weekend for their opening series of SEC play against the Longhorns, and I'm gonna be there. But I tell you what, Cade Townsend, the Saturday starter, is looking really good. I think he's down to 0.4445 ERA.

SPEAKER_03

Nice, nice. Evie, you tell everybody how they get in touch with you.

SPEAKER_08

Um, they can follow us at the Rebel Walk on Twitter and Facebook and follow me at Wolness Eevee, and they can get our content at therebelwalk.com. And we're also on pretty much every social media platform you can find. So we would love to have you check us out.

SPEAKER_03

We thank you, ma'am. You take care of yourself. We'll have you on again.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, I'd look forward to it. Thank you so much.

unknown

Take care.

SPEAKER_03

The Gazebo Gazette is Harrison County's only independent newspaper publishing news from Gulfport at debate St. Louis every Friday. Hi, this is Hunter Dawkins, owner of the Gazebo Gazette. If you're looking for local news without the hack on sorting through story after digital story, log on to thegazeboazette.com. Add your name to the digital audience of 250,000 plus coach residents who already know where to find the stories that matter to them. I would also now like to introduce one of the guys that's one of the hardest workers in the media world, David Schultz. David is the host of one of the best college football programs and best college athletic programs in the media, which I listen to a lot. Locked on Sunbelt Podcast. David, what's going on with LaTeX? We're waiting for the schedules. You know, the Sunbelt is the last conference that really doesn't have any playing schedules yet. What are we waiting on?

SPEAKER_12

Well, LaTeX, uh Conference USA sued LaTeX. Uh LaTeX sued back. Conference USA responded. A judge came down with a ruling, I believe on Friday, uh saying that um LaTeX was gonna have to wait and they're gonna have to have a hearing on March 19th. Uh apparently there is a discrepancy in how much uh LaTeX wants to pay and conference USA wants. LaTeX wants to pay just under $500,000 and uh conference USA wants over five and a half million. So there's a little bit of a difference. So as per usual, Hunter, it's coming down to money.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. What's the likelihood that LaTeX will be? Because as you have talked about on your podcast, Conference USA has already planned them in the schedule. So what what's the likelihood that that's gonna maintain or the Sunbelt are gonna get what they really need?

SPEAKER_12

I think, I think eventually it'll come down. They'll they'll be in the Sunbelt this year. Uh, but the longer it goes, right, this hearing is to the 19th, how long a judge takes with that, and all of a sudden it's May or you know, June, and then it's gonna get a little dicey. So yeah, this this needs to be resolved, you know, by the end of the month, one would think. Yep. Once that happens, if it doesn't happen by the end of March, uh, then it starts to become 50-50. What's gonna happen?

SPEAKER_03

What's your take this week in Pensacola on basketball so far?

SPEAKER_12

Well, I mean, Southern Minnes and Georgia Southern have made two incredible runs, right? Southern Mist is playing their fourth game in four days. They're down against Troy at halftime. They're having a real difficult time with the Trojans zone defense. And Georgia Southern is playing their fifth game in five days, and we've had two stars come out of this so far. Our Tyleek Weeks has been fantastic for uh Southern Mist and uh Tyron Moore for Georgia Southern, who had 40 yesterday. Uh it does feel like um Southern Mist is running out of gas. And on the other side, uh Marshall has allowed Georgia Southern to average 100 points against them in two outings. So we'll see if somehow Marshall can slow down this high-powered Georgia Southern uh offense. I picked Troy. Wasn't a you know a big uh, you know, going off the board kind of pick, uh, but they look really good right now against uh Southern Miss. We looked uh for Troy to repeat.

SPEAKER_03

Let me let me ask you this question, Dave. And I know you, I don't necessarily know if you have you thought too much about this. The Sunbelt seems like the the last few years has been pretty strong in basketball, both in women and in men. How are we gonna how is the Sunbelt Conference going to get more than one team in the NCAA turn?

SPEAKER_12

Well, I mean, somehow you need to schedule some tougher teams and you need to win those games. I mean, that's really the only way it was. Troy had a you know a chance at beating um uh didn't they beat UC San Diego, and then they had a chance at beating USC, and USC beat them on a heave three at the end, uh, on a turnover nonetheless. So somehow you have to schedule these teams and you have to beat them. And the Sunbelt just did not do that this year. Uh southern miss.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, they scheduled Ole Miss, they scheduled Miami, South Carolina. They lost all those games either by single digits or in overtime. One of, you know.

SPEAKER_12

Yeah, you need you need to schedule these games, and uh, you know, when you get a chance to beat them, you got to beat them. And, you know, multiple teams have to do that. Um, I don't think this year or last year there was a team that could do that. I think we were thinking about JMU a couple of years ago, which went obviously to the NCAA's tournament and and took down Wisconsin.

SPEAKER_03

Yep, yep. Talk to me now about the best of the best right now in the Sunbelt Conference baseball. You know, how are how is everything looking? I know Southern had the big upset of state, but then of course the next day they dropped. However, Coastal Carolina, I'm hearing they're doing a little bit better. Louisiana, I'm hearing is doing a little bit better. Where are we at?

SPEAKER_12

Well, Southern Miss right now is still the number one seed uh in uh Warren Nolan's um RPI. RPI. So they're still looking very good. Um the Cajuns didn't pull off the sweep against Dallas Baptist, but they beaten LSU earlier in the week. They did take two out of three out of DBU. Uh, and then unfortunately it looks like South Alabama is gonna lose the series to La Tech after taking the first ballgame on Friday. And then, I mean, you got some really good series to begin. Uh Sunbelt, uh, Southern Miss is gonna go visit Arkansas State, and South Alabama is gonna go visit, I believe, the Cajuns to open up Sunbelt play. Uh Coastal Carolina uh did not pull off the sweep against East Carolina. They lost today. Uh Southern Miss is gonna pull off the sweep against North Alabama, though. So I think you got Southern Miss, you got South Alabama, Arkansas State in the Cajuns, uh, and then we'll see how Coastal Carolina can bounce back uh and see if they can put some things together without um, you know, Cam Flukey or um Hayden Johnson, right? They got a long way to go. Meanwhile, I'm gonna uh Marshall is coming to me this week. So I'm gonna go see Marshall, who put up a 25 spot today against St. Bonaventure. So hopefully their bats will stay hot and hopefully it'll stay dry. It's supposed to rain this week. But Marshall's coming to Louisville to play the Cardinals for a couple of days.

SPEAKER_03

How big are these midweek games for the RPI?

SPEAKER_12

The midweek games for the Seven Bell are huge. That's where they are big, right? Because if these teams end up being good, and we'll see. Maybe LSU is not all that it's cracked up to be. But if LSU ends up with a top 10 RPI, uh that allows the Cajuns to, you know, have that win for the whole season and it carries them. You know, and if Mississippi State is a top 10 RPI that helps out Southern Mist all season long because their RPIs are going to go up, right? Um someone beat, was it South Alabama? Someone beat Alabama. Was that uh Troy beat Alabama? I think that's a good thing. Yeah, that's right. That's true. And um, you know, we'll see if Alabama is up there. No, the the midweek games don't mean a thing outside of getting experience for the power uh four teams. They mean everything for uh the Sunbell teams. That's where that's where a co a team like Coastal Carolina was able to get such a good RPI last year to become uh almost a national seed, they just missed out on that. But were they 10th or something like that? Seeded 10th last year. And so when you get those things, uh they're big. And maybe, you know, it comes down to Southern Minnesota and Mississippi State, who's gonna be you know, maybe Southern Mits sweeps Mississippi State. I'll say that. I think they go up to Starkville to play and think if it's coming down to Southern Mits or uh Mississippi State as a national seed. Well, if Southern Mits beats them twice, they should have a leg up. So I think that's a big deal.

SPEAKER_03

Final question for Dave. Talk to me about with let's just say this doesn't the Louisiana Tech thing doesn't work out of the Sunbelt and they're uh brought to only 13 teams. Do you think this is a total change? I remember Keith Gill telling me, Commissioner Gill telling me last year that there wouldn't be any divisions. Is this a somewhat of a a change at least uh in the competition? Is this a change in the schedule? Talk to me about what the thoughts are.

SPEAKER_12

Well, sure. I mean, someone's gonna be off every weekend and you're not gonna have Sunbelt games. Someone's not gonna be playing a Sunbelt game every weekend. So that's gonna be an issue. You know, having said that, right, you do you think people would have contingency plans in case something doesn't work out. So I I I'm not sure I could make this schedule, but you would think with what's going on, like if you were the Sunbelt and this was not settled by the end of 2025, I have to have a plan B. I certainly hope that the Sunbelt is not coming up with a plan B right now. This plan B should have been instituted, you know, last fall or last winter.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, exactly once ago.

SPEAKER_12

So just be just be ready to roll that out, whatever it is. Um because if you know you can't be seeing your caught off guard because you know this thing was gonna happen. So maybe it's not going your way and they're not gonna join until 27. So it'll be interesting to see what plan B is, but you would hope that they would have a plan B ready to roll out when they decide you know, June 1st, we're gonna let La Tech play in the conference USA next year and they were come out in 27.

SPEAKER_03

David, tell everybody how they can get in touch with you.

SPEAKER_12

Uh you can follow me uh Schultz on uh Twitter and X, uh Instagram, locked on Sunbelt on the Instagram uh and TikTok. And um we're just looking forward to doing the baseball, and we're gonna go live here after the Troy uh Troy Southern Miss Ball game, and we'll preview, we'll wrap that one up and we will preview the uh the Marshall Georgia Southern game and do some baseball. South Alabama getting a bid to the NIT after last year's debacle. So there's a lot to talk about going live in between the two semifinal games, Hunter, and then we'll have a full episode tomorrow on Lockdown Sunbelt uh on YouTube, Apple and Podcast and uh Spotify. We thank you, my friend. Thanks, Hunter.

SPEAKER_03

I would like to introduce one of the legends of Mississippi football for his three decades of coverage and recruiting in Mississippi. State football, and you know, he is also the host of the Boneyard Podcast, owner of jeanspage.com and a sports writer for 24-7 sports. Steve, this is Steve Robertson. Steve, tell me about what's going on with Mississippi State's football team, at least from the offensive line position.

SPEAKER_13

Well, you know, they went out and signed several offensive linemen. And uh, you know, Brandon Snay was a guy that uh for a while it looked like they weren't gonna take him. They ultimately take him to kind of make sure they have competition position, and uh, you know, now he's not eligible. And uh it's incredible how you know that that stuff works out. I think some of our fans are maybe going a little bit overboard with that, but some concern is certainly warranted because that's the most important position you had, and you wonder if you've done enough. And I don't know that most people were you know expecting Brandon Snay to come in here and be Fork Shaw Womack, but they at least thought he could be a solid two deeper and push the guy in front of him if he didn't win the job. But um, you know, that that's kind of gone on. I had an interview with Jeff Levy, one-on-one interview earlier this week, and and he shared kind of where it is. And uh it doesn't appear that Snay's interested in litigating this. He's gonna go through pro day at Mississippi State and try to catch on with an NFL team.

SPEAKER_03

You know, it's a good segue question right here with Jeff Levy. You know, you had spoken that you had talked with him earlier this week. What is his feeling now of this year? Is it a little bit of intensity? Is it just a sense of urgency? Go with me on that if you don't mind.

SPEAKER_13

You know, I think Leb is in a good place. And uh what I mean by that is is uh there's a Jeff is always kind of an optimistic guy, but he's got the best roster he's ever had in the three years he's been at Mississippi State. So he's eager to get on the practice field. They'll get underway uh March the 17th. You know, it'll be the uh spring break this week, and then nobody will report and kind of get all their uh equipment detailed out for Monday and then take the practice field on Tuesday, and you know, then they'll have about five weeks of that, and we'll uh you know, we'll take a break and get ready for some workouts, and the season will be here before you know it. But uh he's always optimistic, but I I really feel like that he is as optimistic as I've ever heard him just because of the fact that I think they've got guys that are the size and strength they need on both sides of the line of scrimmage, really for the first time since he's been here.

SPEAKER_03

You know, Steve, I I've heard this rumor, not necessarily in the media, but on message boards, on Twitter, and all of those different formats, that it's of course been getting out to the media that Starkville is having such a lack of recruiting success because of people's uh thoughts about Starkville in general. Now, of course, you and me, you know, I I love Starkville. I love being up there, and I know that's your hometown up there. Where is do you think this is coming from?

SPEAKER_13

Oh, I don't believe any of that. Um, you know, I think some people, when there is uh you know, maybe a situation they don't understand, they try to suggest something that makes sense to them that may not be the reality. I mean, Starkville has always been a college town. Uh it's never gonna be a major metropolitan area. It's just not gonna be. And there's some cool things happening here, but Starkville's not for everybody. Uh, if you know, if you're a guy that wants to be able to, you know, go to a different party and some big nightclub every night, you're not gonna be happy here. But if you want to come to a place where you're gonna be locked in and uh focusing on education and focus on your you know your team and your chosen sport, well, this is the place for you, you know. But you know, there's a lot of people that aren't gonna be comfortable in you know, in Athens, Georgia, it would be comfortable here, and there's people that wouldn't be comfortable in Baton Rouge that'll be comfortable here, and there's people that want the amenities that are available in those cities. But, you know, you it's not like uh you know college guys, especially transfer guys, are gonna be here for a long time. Most of them are only gonna be here for a year or so. And I just think a lot of that's just people talking, and and I think it's okay to just kind of let them be them.

SPEAKER_03

Where do you see what do you see this next year for Chris James?

SPEAKER_13

Well, I think he's gonna have to make some decisions about how and who is doing the evaluating for the NCAA transfer portal. And you know, really the last three years, you've had uh, you know, maybe one guy that you got out of the portal that really had no contribution, and you you had the Kanye Clary and the Andrew Taylor situation where those guys basically sat out and uh contributed nothing despite the fact that uh you know they were being paid to come here. But um this year, I think a lot of it kind of caught up. Like you didn't just have one guy, you had multiple guys that either didn't make any contribution or really didn't make anywhere close to the contribution that they were expected to make. And I think maybe outside of uh Epps, you almost called this a dead portal class. I mean, you know, McGee had some good games from time to time, including the one Saturday against Georgia. But you know, this is a portal class that I think a lot of Bulldog fans expected some big things from, and you look back, and uh Mira Ali obviously uh was just kind of a footnote on this team. And so state has to do a better job evaluating on the front end when it comes to these portal classes. You've got money to spend, you've got to spend it wisely, and it didn't appear this year Mississippi State did.

SPEAKER_03

I heard today was the day 50 years ago, this was Ron Polk's first day of coaching. Uh I'm not sure if that's true or not. You can obviously tell me that, but what does that mean to you, and what do you think that feels like that for the the legacy of the Mississippi State baseball program?

SPEAKER_13

Yeah, I give Doug Kyle credit. You know, Doug told me that a few weeks back that uh, hey, you know, the uh you know the Sunday game of this weekend was gonna be you know the big anniversary. And he goes, hey, could you let people at administration know they can verify that? You know, maybe have him throw out the first pitch or have a moment of recognition, and and then ultimately that that wasn't possible because of the fact that uh you know we had to move the series up. But it's good to see the university uh celebrate that. But I think Brian O'Connor's comments on Saturday were very appropriate because Ron Polk is not just a hero to Mississippi State. Uh Ron Polk is a hero to everybody that loves college baseball. Because, as coach used to say, they wanted to give us the chump change and then tell us how to spin the chump change. Uh, he fought the NCAA on every rule change that he thought was an impediment to the advancement of college baseball. Ron Polk was the first full-time baseball coach in Southeastern Conference history. Everybody else had to do something else. Everybody had to work in football equipment or work in some other capacity within the athletic department. Uh he was the first guy to come in and just be a baseball guy. He was the first real national recruiter in college baseball. And um everything that we enjoy today kind of traces back to the Ron Polk era. And uh, I don't know that college baseball would be where it is had Polky not been such an advocate when he was like the president of uh, you know, the the the Coaches Association because he he was a warrior for college baseball. And uh he told us we needed to build and that we could make money in baseball. We did, and then everybody else kind of followed suit.

SPEAKER_03

Final question for you, Steve. Where does the Bulldog stand? I know they had they were successful this weekend, however, you know, there's not it wasn't necessarily a bad loss against uh UCLA and Southern Mist because of their overall RPI rankings, but where does the team stand where you're at right now?

SPEAKER_13

Well, this team should make it to Omaha if they can stay healthy. And you you talk about losses. I don't know if anybody in the country has two better losses than Mississippi State. You know, I mean, if we're gonna compare losses. I mean, you look, you know, Vanderbilt loses to North Dakota State, LSU loses to Sacramento State, Tennessee loses to Wright State. State has not had a bad loss yet. I I would venture to say right now that Texas and Mississippi State are the two best teams in the Southeastern Conference. And uh I don't know that UCLA can beat Mississippi State in the best two out of three. And uh I think that's something we can flesh out down the road. Maybe we all get to Omaha, we fight it out. But uh this is a very special Mississippi State team. Uh they're 14-2, which is the um best 16-game start since the 2019 team started 15-1. And that that 15-1 team was the top eight national seed and went to Omaha. So uh I think Mississippi State is right where they need to be. You hate losing ball games, and you wish you'd have won both of those, but Mississippi State's got plenty of games left to play, and they're gonna win a whole bunch of them.

SPEAKER_03

My friend, tell everybody how they can get in touch with you.

SPEAKER_13

All forms of social media at Scout Steve R, and of course, uh jeanspage.com, the Mississippi State affiliate. It's the only place you need to go for Mississippi State sports coverage.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, my friend. You take care.

SPEAKER_01

The following is a paid advertisement by O'Dwyer Realty Agent Stephanie Mankowitz. Call Stephanie today at 228-563-0471 for all your realty needs.

SPEAKER_06

Uh, would say there's a lot to know. Indeed, purchasing a home as a primary residence is a process or even as an investment, but there is a definite checklist for first-time home buyers.

SPEAKER_03

What's the checklist? Tell me about that.

SPEAKER_06

So the first on the checklist is have you prepared your personal and employment documents? I mean, you're asking a bank to write a loan for a house. Your W-2s and your uh possibly your tax return depends on what loan. Um if you don't have those documents, you can't get the pre-approval. So if I want to write an offer on your neighbor's house and my client doesn't have a pre-approval, I'm dead in the water. I'm dead in the water. I am not supposed to submit an offer without a pre-approval. That is just the seller's not going to respect it. The second thing on the checklist is you kind of want to avoid changing jobs. Like, let's just pretend, let's just say your wife's a nurse.

SPEAKER_03

Wow, that sounds pretty good.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, she makes good pay. So uh we don't want to hurt her in the process. If she gets a better offer to make more money at a different hospital, she's like, Well, I want to buy this house, but I don't want to change jobs, but I've got this opportunity to get more pay. Well, it's different for her because she's a nurse, she wants to change hospitals, right? That's a jump loan. I mean she can still buy a house. We don't have to wait until she's been at the job a year. She's taken a better job in the same field. What is usually required is a 30-day letter. She's been with us 30 days over here at this new hospital. This hunter is awesome, and we continue to employ her. When she's been at the new job 30 days, we continue with our loan process. You can still buy the house you originally wanted. Does that make sense? Um, probably the last couple things on the list is the zone. Where do you want to buy? It's not our job as a realtor to steer to steer you. And if you like to have a cow and you don't want to give up your cow so you want to be a little more rural, um, I need to know that. Let your agent know what you want. Maybe we can't get it all. But if you want to be rural, you might get zero-down USDA zone. So you got no down payment requirement. Speaking of down payment hunter, the final checklist item. You need to have this thing called closing costs. And some people might laugh right now and say, Of course, I know what closing costs are. But there are a lot of first-time home buyers, and even some of my repay buyers who don't realize closing costs have gone way up in the last three years. So have $5,000 set aside, expect $10,000 or more in closing costs for attorneys and loan fees. That's that can be $10,000 or more. But if you've got half of that set aside, I, as the realtor, will fight to get the seller to give you a credit for the other half. It can be part of negotiating it into the price and turn into a win-win if that makes sense.

SPEAKER_03

Sounds like to keep it simple, they need to ask a realtor about this checklist. If you would like Stephanie to help you determine your next steps, call today at 228-563-0471. Or call her at the office and ask for Steph at 228-452-4242. Steph has the latest information to help you get through the process with a reasonable expectations again. That's 228-563-0471 to speak direct with Stephanie. We gratefully appreciate you listening to this podcast. We thank you again, Jeff. It's a great show, and I think it's only going to get better. I mean, uh, you know, a lot of good guests.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, man. Uh having Coach Greaves on, like probably one of his first in-depth interviews post-uh state championship win for St. Stanislaus. It's great, man. That's awesome. Um easing up to our 30th episode. It's hard to believe, man. You know, we've uh I remember you reaching out to me, like, hey, I want to do this. And I was like, if we do it, we've got to commit to it, and here we are, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely. Every week, every week. And so uh it's been good. And we've had some good guests, some high school guests, some professional guests, some call, a bunch of college guests, and uh, you know, we're just moving forward.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, man. I'm hoping like maybe after uh spring football, we can get major applewhite on and talk about some USA football, see what's going on. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_03

I'm looking to get major, I'm looking to get uh, you know, some more college coaches at least just to be able to talk with. And uh, and you know, I'm actually starting to look for some more referees. I have I have a good uh a good group of uh referees, not only in uh from the SEC, but from the Big 12 and all that. And so uh maybe they can give us a little bit of perspective of what they're looking for. Because you know there's rules are always changing.

SPEAKER_05

So yeah, and uh they're they're definitely the most popular most unpopular part of the game, unfortunately. So that's uh great show, my man.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, my friend. Well, make sure you follow us on the gazeboazette.com where the podcast will be posted next week, as well as on Facebook.com backslash the real gazebo gazette or on X at Gazebo Gazette as the handle. SPEAKER_03

And all of the those on all of those podcasts, the tag is under the HD Experience. So I'm gonna get out. This is Hunter Dawkins, the host of the HD Experience. We'll catch you all.
