Can you guess which artist or song Matt Witzel is talking about? It's Classic Rock Cliff Notes on the Goad Rocks PA. On today's episode of Classic Rock Cliff Notes, we take a look at a band that formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. Before conquering the global music landscape, this iconic four-piece originally evolved from a local group called the Quarrymen, founded by the rhythm guitarist in November 1956. Soon after, a talented 15-year-old multi-instrumentalist joined the ranks following a chance meeting at a church festival, followed by an even younger league guitarist who eventually secured his permanent spot in February 1958. The group cut their teeth, playing demanding, exhausting all-night residencies in the Red Light District of Hamburg, West Germany, performing at rowdy venues like the Indra Club and the Kaiser Keller. They cycled through multiple early names, including Johnny and the Moondogs and the Silver Beatles, and underwent crucial lineup shifts along the way. In August 1962, their original drummer was abruptly replaced by a charismatic local favorite, finalizing the definitive lineup just before their debut single, Love Me Do, hit the British airwaves. By early 1964, international mania erupted, sparking a historic invasion of the United States pop market following a milestone live television appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Known for relentless studio innovation, they soon traded grueling live stadium toys for experimental studio work, expanding standard recording limits with backwards tapes, tape loops, and avant-garde orchestral sweeps. In September 1969, they released a masterpiece featuring a crosswalk cover, followed by their final studio album in May 1970, which served as a bittersweet curtain call before their highly publicized breakup. So now that you had some time to think, we'll tell you who it is. The band we're talking about today is the Beatles. They are the best selling music act of all time, with estimated sales of over 600 million units worldwide. They continue to hold the record for the most number one albums on the US Billboard 200 chart with 19 releases.
