We tend to show up big and bad and consistent for it seems like uh any and everything else in our lives. I don't want you to come to the end of the year and be like, oh my gosh, I said I wanted to do all these things. And next thing you know, the the the the goals, the resolutions, all the things, it's just rolling into the new year. No ma'am, we're not doing that. Hey, what is up you guys? Welcome or welcome back to Chats with Michelle where we chat all things keeping your promises to yourself through navigating adulthood and pursuing purpose. And in today's chat, we are gonna be talking all about drifting, what it means, what it looks like, all the things. So if you've been around these parts for a little bit of time recently, then you know that I've been in the theme or stuck on this theme of I don't have an older sister, I am the oldest. However, if I did have an older sister, here's the things that I wish that she would have told me. And one of the things that I have been thinking so much about as of recent is the idea of drifting and how um it's so easy to lose yourself in the midst of life just happening. Um, many of us are experiencing adulthood, right? And we're figuring it all out, right? It's our first time ever doing it, and in the midst of just life and work and bills and everything that just comes with navigating adulthood. Um, if we're not careful, we can drift, and we can drift in so many different areas of life. So I wanted to read what does it even mean to drift? What does drifting even mean? So let's get the definition. The drift is a slow, gradual movement or change, and that definition in itself made me think about just the ocean, right? And how oftentimes when you go to the beach, or if you're not familiar with the beach, when you go to the beach, uh you can sit your belongings in one place and you get into the water. However, with the tides and the wave, you slowly begin to go to the other side of the beach, the ocean, and you look up and you realize, oh my goodness, all of my things are way over there. I'm like so many feet away, and you didn't even notice because you were either enjoying your you were either enjoying yourself and or not paying attention, and the waves just slowly but surely gradually just took you on over to the other side. And I think that's exactly what happens um just to us in life, whether that is the different dreams or desires that you said that you wanted to do, you just get super overwhelmed and or just like you know, consumed with life because life be life and life happens, and the dream dies, or the things that you said that you were gonna do, you you all of a sudden are not doing it anymore, you don't care to do it, and that's why you know, here on Chats with Michelle, I chat all things keeping your promises to yourself, and I've shared this so many times before, but because it's like we tend to show up big and bad and consistent for it seems like any and everything else in our lives. So, right, we go to our jobs. Many people, you know, many of us have jobs, we go, we show up, we give them our all, but then when we come home, what do we do? We sit, we slum on the sofa, we you know, go to sleep, or we just we just take care of every we, every one or everything else, except for you know, just doing the one thing, the one promise that you can keep to yourself. Um, and we slowly and slowly but surely just drift away more and more each day. That can even come to even myself in this season right now, it's spending quality time with God. Um, it's like I just can't seem to find the time. And I go like this because it's just I think it's just it's it's a priority thing. I'm just not it's not a priority. I'm not making the time. I joke all the time that listen, if I have an appointment, if I have to go get my hair done, my nails done, a wax appointment, like whatever it is, I'm going to find, make the time. I'm gonna wake up early, go to bed late, like whatever it is, I'm always gonna figure it out. But for some reason or another, when it comes to spending time with God, just like having that intention and times, all of a sudden, I just don't have the time. I I can't seem to find the time. So the next thing you know, you just feel like you're so distant from God. You're like, God, I can't even hear you. I don't, I don't, I don't hear what you're saying. I don't, I don't understand the direction or I don't feel the direction. I'm so unclear in this season of life, and I think that just goes along the lines of just not making it a priority, and then you are just all over the place, just in an you know, just not clear. And then you look up and you found that you're so far removed, you're so incredibly drifted, whereas that you, you know, were intentional about spending this quiet time, and now you're just like, I don't know if I'm coming or going. And this ultimately made me come to the conclusion or more so realization that drifting is a slow process, you don't see it while it's happening, it's one of those things that you just don't notice. But when you are overwhelmed or feeling frustrated, uh, you can then see how far removed you are because you have not been consistent in the different areas of life. So what do we do now, right? I can talk all things, uh, drifting and you know how we get there. So now that we know that drifting is a slow process, what are some actionable items? What some actionable steps that we can do to ensure that we take our temperature first and foremost to analyze, like, hey, am I drifting? Have I drifted? Where am I? And once you get the you identify, I guess is the word I'm looking for, where you are, then it's like, okay, how can I move forward? So, one of the things that I love to say is the three C's, which is clarity, confidence, and consistency, because I truly believe that once you become clear on what it is that you're doing, you will then have the confidence to be consistent. So, one way that you can be consistent, and I am also working on this with myself, and this is kind of like I feel like I'm hitting, you know, the nail on the head with this, or you may be saying, Girl, okay, Michelle, you keep saying this, you keep saying this, but because I genuinely believe in it and I know that it's true because I find myself having to recenter and remind myself to do this very thing, and that very thing is if you haven't figured it out by now, is what can you do today that your future self will thank you for? What is one promise you can keep to yourself today that your future self will thank you for? I chat all things keeping your promises to yourself because it's so incredibly real. And keeping your promises to yourself doesn't necessarily have to be this great grand jester of a thing. It can literally be drinking more water if you have this like grander, great goal at the end of the week, at the end of the month. Like if you're saying I want to keep myself hydrated, then how can you keep that promise to yourself by drinking more water by making sure that you're filling up your water bottle two times a day and intentionally drinking and setting up a calendar for yourself? Maybe you keeping your promises to yourself is being intentional about um setting 30 minutes a day to read because I know myself I can get so lost on this phone and start scrolling. So that can be a way that you keep your promises to yourself, or keeping your promises to yourself, you're keeping your promise to yourself. That one promise you do is like ultimately, okay, if you have a big project that you're working on, what is one thing that you can do every single day to move the needle? And that is something with myself that I am it's a muscle that you have to keep on practicing and you have to keep on working out and keep on flexing so you don't lose it. And that is something that I um am intentional about doing, but I'm I don't always do it. There are moments where I'm just sitting, I'm like, oh, but I'm like, no, Michelle, like you've worked hard all day, you need to do the one thing for yourself. So I am intentional about putting something on my planner and saying, hey, this is the one thing you're gonna do today, whether that's you know, I'm going to film, whether that's I'm going to do laundry, whether it's like, you know, I'm going to, you know, whatever that is, whatever that is to for you, what is the one thing that you can do and keep it and keep that promise to yourself. Because listen, when you got an assignment due for work or you have an assignment due for school, I know you get it done, don't you? Uh-huh. Yes, correct. I know you do. So if you can do that, then you can keep a promise to yourself as well. Because I don't want you to come to the end of the year and be like, oh my gosh, I said I wanted to do all these things. And next thing you know, the the the goals, the resolutions, all the things, it's just rolling into the new year. No, ma'am, we're not doing that, right? So, what is one thing that you can do every single day? We're in the middle of the year right now. If you're listening to this when it comes out, and whenever you listen to, I don't matter. However, if you're listening to this when it comes right out, we're in the middle of the year. Take a moment to sit down and see how you can keep your promise to yourself for the next week. Let's just do it. Actually, tomorrow. What is one thing that you can do that will move the needle? What is one thing that you can do tomorrow that your future self will thank you for? Is it doing laundry? Is it folding the laundry? Is it cleaning the bathroom? Is it doing research for the paper that you need to do? Is it doing a return? Like, what is one thing and do that for yourself because you deserve it. You matter. So with that being said, thanks so much for chatting with me today.
