We hear Jesus shut down Peter’s “What about him?” and call us back to the only question that matters: will we follow him. We name comparison as a quiet thief of peace and mission, then look at Paul’s chains as proof that circumstances can’t cancel a calling.
• Peter’s sideways glance and Jesus’ direct correction
• comparison as a thief of peace, gratitude, and vocation
• modern triggers like social media, success, and visible blessings
• God writing different stories for different disciples
• Paul in Rome: restricted body, unstoppable gospel
• holiness as faithfulness on our own road
Don’t compare yourselves with anyone. Stop measuring. Fix your eyes on Christ and follow him.

Peter Compares And Jesus Redirects
SPEAKER_00Today in the gospel, Jesus gives us one of the hardest spiritual lessons. Peter turns around, sees John, and immediately asks, Lord, what about him? What about him? Three words. And if we're honest, we ask them all the time, Lord, what about their life? What about their marriage, their success, their ministry, their life, their health, their opportunities, their blessings, everything that they have, their path? Jesus gives one of the shortest and most powerful responses in Scripture. What concern is it of yours? You follow me. In other words, stop looking sideways. Look at me. Because comparison is one of the great thieves of the spiritual life. We do this all the time. It steals peace, it steals gratitude, it steals mission, it blinds us of our own calling. Peter had just been told he would die a martyr. Jesus had already revealed that suffering awaited him. And Peter immediately looks at John. Well, what about him? Well, is he going to suffer too? Will his path be easier? Will his story be different? And Jesus says, That is not of your concern. Your concern is that you follow me.
Why Comparison Steals Your Peace
SPEAKER_00What a word for our age, because we live in the age of comparison. Everyone is looking sideways. Social media, success, followers, money, things, what vacations we go on, titles. Even in spiritual life, why is their family doing better? Why is their parish growing? Why do they have these gifts and these blessings? Why is their cross lighter than mine? And Christ keeps saying, What concern is that of yours? You follow me.
Different Stories Same Call To Holiness
SPEAKER_00Because God writes different stories. Peter receives a cross, John receives longevity, one dies crucified, the other one dies of old age. Different missions, same holiness.
Paul In Chains The Gospel Unbound
SPEAKER_00And then the first reading becomes extraordinary because we meet Paul in Rome. Think about where his story began. In Acts, it started with frightened apostles hiding in the upper room. Now it ends with Paul in the capital of the empire, proclaiming Christ openly. The gospel reaches Rome. The mission moved forward. And look at Paul, he's in chains, underground, restricted. Yet Scripture says with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the kingdom of God. Wow, the irony. Paul is chained, the gospel is not. His body is bound, but the word is free. The entire empire could limit his movement, but it could not stop his mission. And maybe that's a final lesson before Pentecost. Your circumstances do not determine your mission. Paul had chains and still evangelized. Peter had a cross and still followed. John had waiting and still remained faithful. Different roads, same Christ. Some people spend their whole lives saying, What about him? And they never lived their own vocation, never really truly embraced their own mission, never carry their own cross, never become the saint they were meant to become. The
Your Vocation Depends On Following
SPEAKER_00saints stopped looking sideways. They fixed their eyes on Christ. Maybe today Jesus says that to all of us. Stop comparing, stop measuring, stop looking at everyone else. Follow me. Because at the end of life, God will not ask why you were not Peter or Paul or John. He will ask, did you become the person I created you to be? There will only be one of you for all eternity. Did you follow me? And if you can't answer yes to that, then that's everything. That's the gospel. That's the beauty of a relationship with the Lord. Don't compare yourselves with anyone. Stop measuring. Fix your eyes on Christ and follow him. Amen.
