sup gang. today we got a birthday recap, sports gratitude, parental pride, history, St. Patty's-themed gaming and the thing you're most proud of. slainte!
Howdy, gents. Welcome to the next most recent episode of the podcast. Glad to have you here. Hope you enjoyed the episode. We got uh pretty good flow. What's good? We got a week in history, we got a trivia game, we got a couple random things, question of the week. We'll see if we get to it all, and we'll see where the conversation takes us. First of all, we're recording this on St. Patrick's Day. So everyone that partakes, happy St. Patrick's Day. Hope you're all enjoying it. I feel like we've all kind of reached the fact that we are recording this means that the three of us are not uh doing much on St. Patrick's Day. And I don't know if the rest of uh the rest of us are in similar situations. How do you have Guinness today, man?
SPEAKER_08I think I think I think you gotta be real, like at a certain age with a certain level of freedom to not only celebrate on the weekend, which is what a lot of people did here.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_08And then also go celebrate on the actual day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I did not really but still I've like never really been a big St. Patrick's Day person to begin with. I mean, I like the idea of it and you know, the music and going out to environments that are celebrating it, and it's just a time for people. I mean, people have fun and people are in a good mood, usually around it, which is always good. Um, but my la my memory is always gonna be about Beths. Oh my god. That's St. Patrick's Day party, like that's always the best where my head goes. It was a really good time. It's so fun. Um, so yeah, hope uh hope you guys are enjoying it and uh were able to celebrate it, celebrate it as much as you could. Saratha, I feel like this is a big episode for you. Uh just because I get the idea that you had more social engagements in like the two days of this past weekend than I've had for maybe like a six-month period.
SPEAKER_07Because interesting, okay.
SPEAKER_00As you were celebrating your going from one thing to another thing to another thing to another thing. True, yeah. There's a lot of there's a lot of stuff packed in there, which I'm really interested to hear about. Um I guess that's a good segue into what's good. I don't know if you want to start it off. Uh I'm sure your stuff touches on that uh as well.
SPEAKER_08So yeah, honestly, you know, the thing I was thinking about throughout like the weekend was that question we did a while back, which is like, what are the stats in your life that you kind of would like want to measure? And I was thinking about it obviously in the context of my birthday, and that like I'm like, man, uh a really great stat that I'm proud of is like the number of really awesome people that I've managed to like have in my life to keep in my life. Um and I was just you know, I was definitely experiencing kind of the the gratitude of that, especially like you know, over the weekend.
SPEAKER_00Oh also yeah because we had to mention it. Happy birthday, man. Congratulations, happy birthday every year. That's awesome. Yeah, thank you, thank you.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, uh, I will say 36, even going into it, I was like, this isn't that you know, to me, it's not like a very special birthday. It's kind of like whatever. At this point, I think it's like you wait till you're 40 for like it to be a big deal again. But um incredible weekend, uh incredible week. I feel like inadvertently a lot of stuff came together, and not that it was intentional, but it ended up kind of feeling like a birthday week more than just like even a day of. Uh, we recorded the podcast on Tuesday night. Wednesday, uh uh it wasn't again for my birthday, but like it just kind of came together. We decided to go to trivia. Uh, we got third place in a tie with two other teams, which is fun. You got to actually place, which is fun. Uh is this a regular trivia that you go to? Like are you familiar with the other teams that are there or the host or I I am only because it's the bar across the street from my apartment. Um but it is I will say hands down, best trivia I've ever been to. And I'm actually gonna miss it when I like I think it's gonna be it's gonna suck when I move, and then we have to come back to like this area, which seems to not have much going on, but there's this one bar where there continues to be the best trivia ever. Uh I just love the way the guy has designed it.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yeah, is it is it like the questions or the host, or what is it about it that makes it so good?
SPEAKER_08I think it's obviously I think the host and the questions are like one and the same. He's created this whole thing. Uh, but he cracked to like a really fun format, I think, even relative to other trivia things we've checked out, where um it's both this like really good blend of like timely, like if you're paying attention to what's happening in the news, what's happening in pop culture, like you get kind of rewarded for that. Uh, and at the same time, he brings in a good balance of like just deep, hard trivia. Like, do you know this random information or not? Uh, but I think I love the thing I love the most is like every round uh has a different uh vibe. So the first round is just like questions or whatever. Second round is um he'll show you a bunch of images, and each round is ten ten questions, but the second round he'll show you a bunch of images, and there's a theme across all of those images, and number 10, you have to just write down what what is the bucket that all these things fall into. So like this last week, right? There was uh there was uh an image of crocs, and then there was an image of you know these cookies that are called turtles, you know? And so it's like so it's like as you go through all of it, you're kind of like it's fun that he gives you this like ability to at least like deduce your way to like figuring it out. And then in the end of it, it's like, oh, it's like reptiles. That's the book. That's where all of these are.
SPEAKER_00That's yeah, yeah, it's cool.
SPEAKER_08He has another one, which I think was a it's it's a real winner with a lot of people, just he'll show you two images, and you have to like guess what the thing is, and it's like usually there's like a combination. So I'll give you an example again. There's a picture of the movie Frozen, and there's a picture of Zendiah. So the answer is frozen Diah.
SPEAKER_00Frozen diet.
SPEAKER_08Oh man, what's that what's it called?
SPEAKER_00Like a portmanteau or whatever? Yeah, yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_08But there's a lot of them, and again, it's like you don't know what the right answer is. That's like you gotta like really figure it out. So I like the fact that like this trivia is not just do you know this random information or not? It's also like, are you smart enough to put this together and maybe treat it also like a puzzle? So I think that's why I love it. Um, but yeah, we did that Wednesday. That was fun. Thursday, uh, I don't know where we ended up going to MSG to watch uh uh uh Big East, Big East games. Um you went to it, huh? Yeah, yeah. I watched UConn for a little bit. I had to I I had to leave like before Villanova even started just because I had a very I was supposed to have Friday off, and then like there's a lot of work stuff that came up, and then uh I had to cancel it my day off on Friday. And so like I wanted to stay and watch the Nova game. Uh my friends still stayed for all of it. Um, but I was like, I gotta go, I gotta like a long day. So Friday was how how easy was it to get tickets? I don't know. Uh my buddy got it. It seemed like it wasn't that bad.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Maybe not for the first round at least.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, I've heard that Friday, Friday night is the big night. That's what that's like because you have two semifinal games and it's supposed to be between four, you know, pretty good teams and you get both of those games.
SPEAKER_08So yeah. So that was that was that. Uh Friday, again, very long day of work, but it was fine. You know, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Uh, but I don't know if I told you guys this. Uh again, not for my birthday, but just happened to align. Uh another friend of a friend uh organized a special early screening of Project Hail Mary.
SPEAKER_02Oh, no way. Wait, so you saw it? Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Wow. Oh man. So this dude organized it for like his buddy, who was whose birthday it was, and he had rented like a whole theater. And you know, basically at one point he was like, Well, like, I'm gonna fill basically like a row of this. So I would love to maybe make make sure other people also get to like take advantage. So he opened it up and like I'm you know, I'm friendly with him, but like our friend uh Melinda is really his like close friend, and so he basically told her, like, hey, whoever you want to include, like figure it out, like let me know. And I think over the course of the week, as they started to see like what the uh RSVPs were looking like, he just let her open it up even more, and then he probably let other friends open it up more too. So, like, it was just like packed screening, but it was like a private screening almost. And we watched Project Hail Mary, highly recommend it. Is definitely like um it's it's it is it is uh it is I so I haven't seen The Martian. I need to see The Martian. Like apparently a lot of people compare it to that because it's the same guy who wrote both books, The Martian.
SPEAKER_00That's funny because I've heard it compared to The Martian, and that like pisses people off. Really? That bother people that they're like they're they're different movies, like style. I'm sure they're very they're written by the same author, so it's the same, like the same guy.
SPEAKER_08Is like it is really uh fun and funny, crowd-pleasing sci-fi. Breezy sci-fi, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I wouldn't say breezy. There's a lot of times where I was like, I gotta unclench. I uh there's multiple moments in that movie where I'm like, I know how this will probably end because of what I know about this author and like this book, and I'm still like stressed. You know what I mean? Because that's how it is, they make a good job of like fucking pulling you in, and you're like, holy fuck. Uh but yeah, I think I think it's gonna, it's gonna go down as like probably one of the better best movies of the year. Um gospel, incredible, just like basically being a one-man show for the most of the movie, so he's gotta carry it with just like himself acting alone, which is an insane thing to think about. Like, um, you know, just him on a set, and like, you know, there's other things, but they're not like people, so it's like interesting.
SPEAKER_00Um apparently I heard he was like really instrumental in getting the movie made that he was like champion, like like, look, we we gotta do this, and I want this part. So I hope that's that he would.
SPEAKER_08But it made sense. I mean it movie worked. Uh I was I was like, there was insane expectations going into it because this movie's been hyped like crazy. And I was surprised at how much it was pretty, pretty good at meeting those expectations. Um, so yeah, that was awesome. And what would you rate it out of 10? Okay. I would rate it uh I would rate it like an eight out of ten.
SPEAKER_01Okay. And to me, I don't give a lot of eights.
SPEAKER_08I don't give a lot of eights, so like don't take that as like uh, you know, B plus or anything. Like to me, eight out of ten is like up there. I mean, yeah, yeah, 10's solid. I'm gonna say I'm interested now. Yeah, we're seeing, we're at the scene. Honestly, also, if there was not if it wasn't for like one specific moment in the movie, uh, and I'll just uh it's not a spoiler, it's just a little bit of a jump scare that is very much played like a jump scare. I would also be like, bring kids, like bring your kids, like this could be like a really fun movie. I will say that moment m is still gonna freak some kids out, like just because of the shock of it, but like amazing, like very wholesome in that way. Where I was like, I was like, oh man, this could work if it wasn't for that one thing that made me jump up.
SPEAKER_02I'm just picturing having the kids in the movie theater and they're like just enjoying it, like counting on their popcorn, and then the jump scare happens and they freak them out.
SPEAKER_07They're just screaming and jettnapping.
SPEAKER_08I don't know. I don't know. Have you guys have you guys dealt with that at all? Like of like a movie that you went to bring your family to that you figured was like gonna be fine, and then there's like one moment or a weird moment where you're like, oh shit, this is not being received the way I thought, or it's changed the tone of the thing.
SPEAKER_00Not any that I've brought them to. The ones we've brought them to are very like Moana, Zootopia, like they're very safe ones. Uh the ones that at home we navigate that. Uh I mean, our kids have always been more on the fearful side. Sure. Um uh ever since they were younger. So uh we haven't, you know, we don't go too crazy with it. Um, so but like, you know, weird was I remember when Luke was younger. I mean, he always had a a tell when he was scared. So like Logan will just remove herself from the room. She'll just she'll just leave, but she won't leave all the way. About like, yeah, she just like runs away, but then she'll still be like standing back there watching. So she's just in another part of the room. Luke, ever since he was young, he would just push himself deeper into the couch and his eyes would just get wider.
SPEAKER_07So he wouldn't move at all, but it was like he was trying to back away as far as he could.
SPEAKER_00And uh the one that Megan and I was talking about is that he was scared of minions. That that freaked him out. And I was like, and we were like, that was our barometer of like, whoa, we are uh dude, we gotta tread a little carefully with this.
SPEAKER_08This day, he's on the show. This day, one of the scariest, one of the scariest memories of my life was uh we when we were still living in Chicago, um, very like young, obviously, and me and my brother were still sharing a room. And um I'll never forget there was one night where you know we were we were kind of in our beds, in our respective beds in the room, and I forget where how it got to this point, but at one point he's just like staring and pointing at the hallway, and it's like black. You can't see anything. And he's like, he's here, he's here to get me, and I'm like, who? And it's like the cat in the hat. And it was because like it was because like the Mike the Mike Myers cat in the hat movie was out, and like for whatever reason, my brother at that age was like terrified of him, but he like swore he could see him there. And I'm like, I will say, there's it doesn't like the cat in the hat park made it nicer, but it didn't actually reduce the scariness that much of just being next to a child pointing at darkness and being like he's here to get me. I was like, Jesus Christ. Um, anyways, back to the point. Uh Project Kill Mary was great. We went out a little bit afterwards, but we had a very long Saturday ahead of us. So I was like, I'm gonna go home like early and get to bed. Um, Saturday, I don't know if I told you guys, uh, but we we always do this polar plunge thing with um our buddy, uh, and he kind of does it to support like the Special Olympics in New Jersey. And uh it got postponed because of all the snowstorms we've had, so it got postponed to my birthday in March. Um, so we were just like, listen, this is a tradition, we're gonna do all of it, and like we'll come back to New York and do my birthday after that. So uh we woke up super early, it was like a very early day, caught a train, I think like an eight-something train to uh and it was like a two-hour train to like seaside, uh, got brunch, which was actually really good at this random place, and then met up with our friends. They did the plunge, then we hung out a little bit afterwards. It was like four or five hours, but it was a very quick kind of trip, and then took the actually hopped on a bus, took the bus back to New York. Uh wow. Yeah, came back to New York, uh, went to a bar, watched uh Yukon thankfully win uh that game. Yeah. Uh which was which is nice, and then uh and then went to dinner and I'd reserved a private room in this like very authentic like Chinese restaurant in Chinatown in New York. This is all Saturday now.
SPEAKER_04Saturday the Biggie's championship. Okay, I think that's when they lost on Saturday, right?
SPEAKER_00Whatever. Either way. I'm just getting the timeline.
SPEAKER_07Because Saturday was the champion when uh St.
SPEAKER_08John's won.
SPEAKER_07St. John's won.
SPEAKER_08Yes, you won.
SPEAKER_05Sri night they won.
SPEAKER_08Uh we we watched 70% of the game. That's why I'm missing this. Okay. We watched 70% of the game and it wasn't looking great, but we didn't catch the end of it uh because we had had to go to our reservation at the restaurant. So yeah, it's all Saturday. Um yeah, so then we uh went went to this restaurant and I'd reserved this like private room for uh my friends and I, and it was like uh a karaoke room, but like not like an but it wasn't a karaoke place, which is why I was mostly intrigued. It was this like family style Chinese authentic restaurant that happened to have like two or three private rooms, uh, and also happened to have karaoke there. And so I was like, let's fucking do this. We went, the food was amazing, it was incredible. Like I had pre-ordered uh this like suckling pig, uh, which you have to pre-order because it it's not just like something they can make that quickly. Uh and so they brought it out. They were like, here, take your pictures, then we're gonna go carve this thing up. Like it's kind of funny. So they just brought out the full pig. Yeah, they brought out the full pig. On the mouth and all that, yeah, yeah, everything. Yeah, like cherries in its eyes and something. Like it was crazy. But yeah, it was like amazing, amazing. Again, from what I understand from my friends who are Chinese, this is a place where like they bring, they come with their families when they're looking for like authentic food that reminds them of home. And so we definitely got to experience a little bit of that vibe. We ordered a bunch of random things. I wish we could have tried more, but like it was just too much food for how many of us there were. Um we did that, ordered like, you know, a bucket of beers and like did karaoke for a little bit. It ended a little faster than we expected, which is not ideal. Uh they were like wrapping up by like 11 a.m. uh 11 p.m. And I was like, oh shit, okay, interesting. I didn't realize that we should have just come here earlier and started earlier. Yeah. Because we had the room for the night. It wasn't like the room was being used by anyone else. So I was like, fuck, we should have just showed up at like five or six, or not five or six, six or seven, and then just like did the whole thing. But you know, we were coming back from New Jersey and everything. So it's a lot. Uh yeah, so we did that. Then we went to like one more bar afterwards to indulge uh the people that still had some life in them. And then I was like, all right, time to go to bed. Um, so headed back uh to to Brooklyn finally. Uh Sunday was uh Sunday and Monday. I actually not again, nothing against my friends. I really appreciated Sunday and Monday because I was just by myself and I just got to like have a lot of alone time. You did the Oscars by yourself? Yeah, you didn't do an Oscars party? No, no, no, didn't didn't do anything, and that was kind of like my a little bit by design. Uh some of my buddies were like flying out. They flew out like Sunday morning for different reasons, and I was kind of like, you know what? I'm actually good with like taking a little breath and and doing my own thing. And so I did that on Sunday. Uh, and then Monday I had taken off uh because I couldn't take Friday off. And like, you know, yeah, yeah, that's what yesterday at this point, right? Yeah, yesterday was Monday. Yeah, um, yesterday was Monday, yeah. Dude, yeah. Just chilled, like went and see, went and saw the new Pixar movie. It was okay. Uh Hopper or whatever it is. Hoppers Hoppers. Yeah. Uh it was all right. Maybe kids would like it. I felt like it was a little uh I was like, I was like, I don't understand like where what the message is. Um there's like an overt environmentalism to it, but like the story goes in a weird direction. I'm like, are we just is the point kindness now and not environmentalism? It's fine. Uh but yeah, it was it was just it was very chill. I got just a lot of time to like, you know, introspect and whatever, which is cool. Uh but yeah, great weekend, honestly. Uh as far as birthdays go. Really solid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that is awesome. Yeah. Uh yeah, definitely more social engagement than I have in a long stretch of periods. In that week, which is cool. Um Yeah, and I guess we'll I don't know if I I mean I guess we'll talk as talk about the Oscars at some point and then sure. Uh we'll just keep it moving through what's good. Uh now, Brandon, what you got?
SPEAKER_02My what's good, I'm gonna keep it broad. Um, it's gonna be sports this year. When you think about it, like it's from January, it's kind of been nonstop. And we're coming into my favorite time of the season, which is the the March Madness. But even in like the lead up to it, we had the NFL playoffs, which after a really shit season were were awesome, minus the Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the Super Bowl kind of sucked, but the rest of the playoffs were were really exciting and really fun to watch, uh, which then are laid right into the Winter Olympics, uh, which we talked about a bunch and had a bunch of like cool storylines and and cool shit happen as it as it always does can that comes with like a global event like that, uh, leading into like this other global event, the world baseball classic, which um has also been awesome, uh especially for like baseball, which is like a stodgy kind of um, I don't think it's controversial to say more like slowburn, boring type. Uh, but then you got the world baseball classic, which is kind of like the it's almost like the the rider cup version of golf where like there's like like a lot more excitement and like the crowd gets into it and and the players are all amped for it. Um and the games have been awesome.
SPEAKER_02Uh you you've had some like like big moment home runs up with these like Latin crowds that's that are just like going eight shit bananas for it and playing music in the stands and stuff, bringing bringing the energy. You had uh the title's going on now.
SPEAKER_05The final's going on now.
SPEAKER_02Team Yose's losing right now, but we'll we'll see. Um they had an awesome game against the Dominican Republic. It ended up two to one, which would seem like it it's pretty boring.
SPEAKER_00But there's a ton of like hits and base runners and a lot of good defense. You had a robbed home run. Aaron Judge throwing someone out of third again. He had some out you had some outfield assists for both teams.
SPEAKER_02So it was it was exciting throughout. So it's been it's it's been a great tournament, and and hopefully the final lives up to it. But but even if not, uh from like baseball standards. It's it's it's been a fun watch. And then we have March Madness, and even this week, some of the conference tournaments.
SPEAKER_00Uh you had the dude from Penn dropping 44 points in an overtime uh win against Yale to send them, send them to the dance. You had the crazy last second shot for Arizona to win the conference tournament. There were there were a lot of a lot of Good games uh throughout.
SPEAKER_02And and I think that hope that that bodes well for the tourney, which starts this weekend. Um crazy. So we had that to look forward to, uh, which is going to parlay right into you know the playoffs, uh playoff race for NBA and stuff, and then you got the World Cup in the summer. So there's a lot to look forward to for this year. Masters. You got the Masters Masters coming too, uh, which would be super soon after the summer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man. It's been it's it's been a ride so far, and I think there's a lot more to look forward to. So uh that's why like the summer hits so hard. I mean, I guess it works for the NFL because like it be it gets to like a fever pitch, but you know, you just ride the wave through the winter ending with the Super Bowl, but then like the Super Bowl kind of like just gets things started. Started, yeah. Uh as you get into college basketball, you know, everything that you just listed. Uh and then all the way through like the NBA finals that go through like the middle of the middle of the summer, then now you have the World Cup. But then after that, from like July and August, that's like there's yeah. It's just the dog days of of 162 games of baseball that you know don't mat that that don't really matter, people don't really follow unless you're like a big fan of them. But but th there's just nothing going on. So then all that everyone has to look forward to is football. So everyone's just frothing at the mouth waiting for the season to get started. It's just weird that it's just this big uh vacuum of anything uh that stops right right right in the middle of the year, uh when everyone's off of school and has time to go do stuff and travel around. But I think it's probably a part of it is that you know people are off of of school and you got vacations and stuff, and I think that most most leagues would probably want to avoid that time, not prime, not prime watching hours. And it's hot as shit.
SPEAKER_08So actually also I randomly just remembered this, Brendan. Another part of uh a little add-on to mine from earlier at the dinner, I split everyone into teams and we played the 90s hype game. Yeah. And did you adjust the scoring? It was a lot of fun. Yeah, I had Chat GPT adjust the scoring. I was like, hey, can you make this a little bit more like so that one question does define their results and just make some changes? Uh but yeah, it was a lot of fun. And how do people do? People it it they got really into it. They had a lot of fun in the world. Uh I would judge by the way everyone did that, that was not the case. Uh uh, but uh it was really exciting in that like it was uh the last question completely upended the standings, and like the team that was in last place managed to climb into first. Really? I don't remember what was very exciting. Um you remember? No, I'm let me look.
SPEAKER_00It's not a big deal. Yeah, whatever. It's cool that you guys do.
SPEAKER_08Well, yeah, it was it was just it was just a lot of fun. So I was like, I was like, well, there's a lot, there's there's utility to this, like beyond you know, us playing. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, cool.
SPEAKER_08Anyway, sorry, back to yourself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, my uh mine was good. I just got two like real quick ones. One of them is it a lot of mines are like milestone things, and uh just another good one with Luke, I guess not like uh this point in time milestone, but just a gradual progression. Um but just seeing him getting a lot more comfortable with reading, uh he was just he was really not confident with it. Um so he would kind of like avoid it. Um and we're just seeing a lot of growth from him and his confidence in reading to the point where now he asked to stay up at night and read with his book light. Um and you can like hear him like reading stories and stuff, uh, which is which is just really cool. It's just cool to see. Um I think I mentioned it here that like when we play video games, I always try to have him like read the little speech bubbles when we're playing through Mario or Zelda games, and he would he would get super uncomfortable with that now, and he's a lot more comfortable there. So um, yeah, again, just just it's cool seeing seeing the growth through it all because uh you know I think just because like Megan is a teacher that she kind of like takes some personal responsibility for that uh as well. And then we've always struggled with, you know, she she always imparted how important it was for her students to read with their parents back home. And so she obviously wants to do the same thing, but she struggles with the time of day of when to do that. I don't I don't know if we've talked about that here, but um just figuring out between you know how busy mornings are, and then you get back from school and he has all this energy and he's ready to go and he's excited about stuff. So it's like you do you want to sit him down and force him to read then when he doesn't really want to, and then you have activities and dinner, and then it's bedtime, and then we're trying to, and then especially when I'm gone and she has all three, it's just like it was overwhelming to her to figure out a time to to focus and dedicate um reading to him. But um figured it out, obviously. Uh, and you know, his teacher and what he's doing in school is really helping. So again, just really cool to see him uh progress and get more confident in reading, which is good. Nice um yeah, the other thing just mentioned it as you know, I know that we'll get into it, but I watched one battle after another on my flight back yesterday.
SPEAKER_03Nice.
SPEAKER_00And uh it's it's it's another one of those moments where I think it being and now winning best picture kind of like affects my j my expectations of it because my expectations are really high, and it was it was just very okay for me. Like I don't even I don't even know if it'd be in a top ten Leonardo DiCaprio movie for me personally. Like there's so many more that I have like memories of. And this one I feel like a year from now I'd be like, yeah, I don't really remember you know what happened is you know, he was a vigilante and you know, some stuff, but yeah, whatever. Uh but I thought it was okay. Uh it was fine, it didn't really blow me away. Not one that I'm like excited to go back and see again. But cool to see that it won best picture of the ones that I saw for most entertaining uh Gonyu was definitely my most favorite watch of the ones that I've seen uh from all these for sure. You were you able to see it? Did you see Sorot? I haven't seen it yet. No, no, no. Not but again yet. Yeah, I haven't either. Yeah, so I got through most of them. I think the only one that I really wanted to see other than that is Marty Supreme.

SPEAKER_08But yeah, there's it's interesting. There's a couple things I called, and I was, you know, not necessarily right on all of them, but one battle and after after another, as soon as I saw it, I'm like, best picture.

SPEAKER_07I I called both of those. Sean Penn. I was like, I was like, both of those were through the first quarter of the movie. I'm like, is this a Leonardo Caprio movie? Like it really feels like this is a Sean Penn movie.
SPEAKER_08Like the dude is stealing scenes, and then it obviously like he was just so like I don't know how he does it. Like, and again, like I'm not trying to there's a lot, it's very controversial that he won. People are really upset about it. And I'm like, I'm not upset that he won, right?
SPEAKER_00They're upset that he just wasn't there for it.
SPEAKER_08No, they're upset that he won because like it's not even about him that he didn't deserve it. It's it's upset like that he's a bad character in terms of like things in his history, stuff he's done.
SPEAKER_00Like he's not yeah, but any performance in the movie was deserving of it.
SPEAKER_08But to me, I'm like, yeah, like it was undeniable watching that movie and walking out of it and not being like, there's a person that has acted the fuck out of acting right there. Like he completely transformed into this other person. Um, so, anyways, for me, one battle after another, um I I loved it. I thought it was just and but I agree, I I I completely can see your point of view on it, right? Um, I think for me it was a couple things. One, it was like Paul Thomas Anderson, in my view. I've tried to watch other movies of his, not really like uh I watched like There Will Be Blood, obviously, because that's like an incredible performance from Daniel Day Lewis. But my impression on so many of his movies is like they're weird and they're hard to understand, and he doesn't really necessarily try to make his movies like very accessible to like a very general audience. And here I got this movie that like was very easy to follow, and I was like, oh wow, like yeah, there's there's weird stuff and there's things that like are random, but like for the most part, you don't need to, you know, have a certain IQ level to to just follow this plot from beginning to end. Yeah, um, so I I love that. I just thought it was like a very well-executed, like, you know, just solid movie. But like it was almost like if a Michelin star chef like was just like, let me let me make you a burger. Like a really good burger. Let me make you a burger. You know what I mean? Like, that's what this movie felt like. And um, yeah, I don't know. It was definitely the best of the year for me, uh, relative to like other things, or not even best. It was one of those, like, I was like, this is gonna win all the awards, and I support it. Yeah, um, yeah. The things I didn't call, I thought, I thought Timmy was a lot for best act, uh, best actor. Man, I feel bad for him.
SPEAKER_00I feel really bad for him. You know, I it probably didn't have any effect on the voting. Uh the votes must have already been in by then, right?
SPEAKER_08So the votes were already in by the time the opera and like uh ballet controversy, but it seemed, and this is what that's what surprised me. That I was like, okay, this happened afterwards, and the votes were already done. And it was still Michael B. Jordan who like kind of ran away with it. Um but you know, in the the post-award analysis seems to be that like the whole Sinners team and Michael B. Jordan was like a big like emblematic of it, they were kind of the like I don't know, everybody loved them. Like they were these like well-liked, they did all the things right, but also it wasn't just campaigning, they were just like so likable and so uh humble and genuine and real through this entire process that like the I don't know, the takeaway was that everyone is rooting for them. Like, no matter what you thought was a better movie or a better performance, everyone was rooting for them over anything else. And then obviously, um the interesting thing they said with like Timmy Chalamet was like the price he paid by losing the Oscar was the price required to make Marty Supreme a financial success, because that is to this day considered one of the like best marketing campaigns, all largely driven by him ever. Of like turning a period movie about ping pong into a $200 million like box office success that is unheard of, and like he did that, but the price Are you saying that he did it because of something specific that he was marketing, or just his status carried that movie so much? His status, but him also being very involved in promoting the movie. Yeah. At one point he was doing things out of his own pocket that the studio didn't even give him money for. Wow, and so he kind of like willed this movie into being a success, but the prevailing theory is that the overexposure to him as a result of all of this, because he has been on he has been on back-to-back movie campaigns. He has not had a there's not been a window for him to like go away for a bit and let people miss you. It's not happening now either. Yeah, the fucking 323 trailer just dropped. Like, we're right back at it. They might probably make him uh not the primary, the tip of the spear of promoting this movie now. They might be like, oh, let's have other actors do it, and he'll he'll come in and just go on Jimmy Fallon.
SPEAKER_00Like, so you think that his reputation has taken that big of a hit?
SPEAKER_08It's not about reputation, I think it's overexposure. I think it's like anytime people see you too much fatigue. Yeah, it's gonna turn into like one person's gonna be like, you know what? Fuck that guy. And then a lot of people are like, you know what, you're right. Fuck that dude. Uh and I think that's what's happened, unfortunately. Man, that sucks. It's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah. I mean, did you have any other thoughts about the Oscars since we're here now? I wasn't able to see much of it. I was flying and doing a bunch of stuff. So the most memory.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah. Honestly, like I think uh the awards largely went to places that no one was really surprised by. There was the one tie, which was funny because we did a movie about that. We just talked about it. Yeah. It hadn't been a tie in a very long time. I think my other biggest takeaway was how hard everything except Conan bombed. Like, it was really it was painful to watch. There were like multiple stars coming up doing bits, and I'm like, yo, I don't understand. Who told you guys this was gonna work in the room? Who is the writing team behind this? But even outside of the writing teams who like write these shows, how are you as performers not able to like did you get looped in last week? Like this is stuff you work on forever. Like, how did no like these are funny people speak up who didn't seem to like catch like or want to be to me? The most glaring one was uh Chris Evans and Robert Down Jr. coming out. That was a bomb. Like that was like they try to do this weird, they try to do this like back and forth about like Robert Down Jr. forgot to get like Chris Pine or Chris Evans a gift, and it's this like weird thing where like Robert Down Jr. like takes a ticket out of his pocket, gives it to him, and it's like his parking validation, and it's playing to just pure silence. And you're also just watching these two people who are arguably like some of the most charismatic and like naturally likable people just eat shit, dude. It was weird. I was like, oh my god, this is uncomfortable. Uh they had a second exchange, and I was equally painful, saved by a bit that was clearly planned with Channing Tatum in the audience, and Channing was immediately funny just because he just delivers the fuck out of whatever bit he's supposed to be doing for the audience. But like, I'm like, dude, how like how did you guys let this happen? Like these are and you know, it's also like the fault is on Disney ABC and the teams who put it all together. They also were forcing a lot of like you know, uh Disney property promo, like they did like a bit with Grogu in the audience, and it's like it's fucking weird, dude. Like, come on, man. Uh so yeah, that was that was a major downside from last year, I think. But otherwise, you know. Seems like Conan did well. Conan is Conan's Conan's like, he's just too good at the thing he does. Like, he's very entertaining. Um, but yeah, I will say I I think like last year's show is probably a better show overall.

So she usually gets up like 6 10, 6 15. Sometimes when she's working out and she does her workout, she'll wake up at like 5, 5 30 in the morning and go work out, which is like absolutely not me. But so I like the worst thing for me is waking up and like having to pee when I only have a little bit of time left until my alarm. Goes off. Because I'm just like very aware, and it's hard to like get back into sleep. The best thing for me is waking up when there's still like four hours left until my alarm goes off. Yeah. It makes me so happy going to pee and like knowing that I'm going to go back into a warm bed and go back to sleep. It's the best thing. So there, so on this one morning, I woke up at like 6 15 and I'm like, and I'm like, damn, my alarm's gonna go off in like an hour. I could still have a little bit. What I don't want to do is, because Megan was still lying in bed, and I was like, what I don't want to do is wake her up because then that's because then she is there, is thereby going to naturally wake me up. And so I uh so I I like go out of bed, I go to the bathroom, I close, I close the bathroom door, I go into the into our little toilet, I close the toilet door. Also, like I don't turn on any lights or anything. Like like you're just trying to stay in the sleep mode. You know what I mean? Like you're just trying to basically stay asleep as you go and do this so you can get right to bed back to bed. But I close all the doors. Like I made sure to close the lid first before I flushed to make sure there was really quiet. I like barely disturb the sheets as I get back into bed, and I just lie there and I'm like, okay, all right, we're good. Mission accomplished. And like three seconds later, she like rustles a little bit and she sees that I'm back in bed, and she like comes over and she like lies on me. And I'm like, okay, all right, we're good. Everyone just stay calm. Everyone, if everyone just says, Ratchu!

So every time that like there are people that when I move under the sheets, my body moves under the sheets, but the sheets don't move, they stay where they're at. Megan, whenever she moves, the sheets come with her wherever she goes. So now she's moving around and pulling the sheets off me, and I'm pulling back, and it was like the worst way to wake up because I was like, there's no way I'm going back to sleep now. There's hours lost. I I did everything that I could. I did everything that I could, and it still failed. That sucks, man. Yeah. If I were in that situation, I'm fairly certain I would not wake up. Like if Megan was laying on top of me and sneeze directly in my face.

Like, no more of that funky dongle and you know, and having to get those shitty headphones that they pass out that have no noise canceling or anything. Like I I realized it since I've started working here. Uh whenever I've I've whenever I've been flying and I went to turn up the volume and I saw the little Bluetooth thing, I was like, no way. I went through it, sure enough, connected super easy to my headphones. Now you have noise canceling, comfortable headphones, like such a huge quality of life upgrade on that uh that I didn't know that I needed so bad. I just didn't like think it was possible, you know, just imagining all the Bluetooth connections going on. But I guess that we're at the point now that everyone's connected to two or three devices at one time. And but you know, you just like you would think that there would be some interference or something, that it wouldn't be a good connection, you know, whatever it is. But uh yeah, really, really nice. Nice. Um, do you guys how do you feel your barometer is you know what? I'll save this for later. I was just looking at it. So my broader one, I think that what I'm most proud of, it's it's it's very general, but I'm proud of my uh conviction, I think. I think when I decide to do something or I decide on a choice, I I am I'm confident in that choice and I go for it. So a lot of different instances in my life, from as we talked about last time, about the hardest thing about doing the ROTC thing uh at college. I decided that I was gonna do it and I completed it. Um even down to like big life things. Like I remember having Megan move down with me um prior to us getting married was a big, a big point of tension uh w between my family, uh you know, particularly with my parents, obviously older generations that you know it's that's taboo to move in before marriage, uh, fully understood. But like it never even really like made me waver at all. I was so confident that, like, hey, I want to get to know this person. This is the best way to get to this no to know this person before I commit long term, et cetera, et cetera. You know, we don't even live in the same state. And so I was just very confident that it was the right choice and uh and move forward with that. There's been a lot of things throughout my life. I think just in general, uh once I get it, even with like past relationships that you guys have all been a part of. Like once I once I decide that like, hey, this is this this part's done, I'm moving on, it's like there's no looking back, it's it's cut and moving forward. Um and uh and I think I'm I I think I'm you know, it could it could it could go one of two ways because if I'm making poor decisions and I stick with it too long, obviously you could have the adverse effect. But luckily these situations have largely turned out to be positive um developments, and it's because I'm very confident that once I've thought through things enough, uh, and and even in terms of like job stuff, like where I've decided to take orders to it in the military, the company that I choose to go with, like once it's clear in my head that I put the thought into it, it's like everything kind of like falls in line and it makes sense to me, and I can just aim for it uh and go like full, full speed into it. So um I think in general, I'm proud of my, I guess conviction is the right word, um, once I make a decision on something. Um, my minor one that I'm proud of that I actually just thought of today is that I am proud that the that going to the dentist is an enjoyable experience. That it used to be a not enjoyable experience where it was painful and it sucked, and he was always asking if you were flossing and you were lying about it. It was it was just it was like it was always like I gotta go to the dentist. Now I'm proud that I take care of my teeth and they're healthy, and so when I go to the dentist, it's just it's good upkeep of my teeth. It's like, hey, your teeth look great, you're doing everything great with it, and keep doing everything. And it's like, I'm very proud of that because it was not that way, and it has become not an unpleasant experience. So I'm proud of that.

Um, I don't know that I expected or was where ever worried about it, but it makes me feel really good that not only am I a place where like I can fully take care of myself and cover my needs, but I've also been able to like help my family on certain things and like whatever. They bought a new house in 2024, and like, you know, I cut a check for that, and like there's like weddings that I've cut checks for and things like that. And it's like uh weird, yeah, it's it's it's this thing that is both the fact that like I don't have to be uh I don't know. And again, I don't know where this fear comes from, as if like earlier in my life, as if I was like borrowing money from them or something, but like the weirdly is this big relief that I don't need to like rely on them that way, and instead I can help them. So that's that's probably the big thing. And then like, you know, the fact that uh I was able to be very kind of like successful in in my job for the most part, and like I feel like I have a good sense of control over uh my career is nice, but those are like upstream things, they don't matter as much as this one piece of it that I feel like I I'm most proud of that just came to mind first.
SPEAKER_00Second, is that something that like was that has that been a worry of yours growing up? Or is it just now that you are where you're at, you're looking back and be like, oh man, thank God I'm not gonna be able to do that.
SPEAKER_08Honestly, you know, like I'm kind of like analyzing this thought in real time and I'm not sure. I'm thinking, like, I know this is gonna sound funny, but like, and it's also not good, and you should not maybe raise your kids this way. But like, you know, I remember when like anything I defied my parents on, my mom on, if I wasn't doing the things that they thought were a good kid was supposed to be doing, my mom would always kind of repeat this thing of like you're gonna be homeless, like you're gonna, you know, you're you're you're gonna whatever. It was always like immediately like the worst outcome possible. And I wonder if maybe that's the root of it, right? Of like this idea that like maybe it's also a sense of defiance of like, look, like you were wrong. Like, guess what? I I fucked around and I didn't, you know, study as hard as you needed me to study to feel like I was being a good whatever kid that you expected or whatever, and I didn't get straight A's. Uh, but guess what? I'm still fucking here doing this now, like you know. Uh so maybe that's part of it. I have no idea. Uh maybe those things inserted this thing in my brain of like really wanting to fight against any possibility that I was gonna be, you know, needing to rely on my family in that way because of how I felt growing up and being told that my decisions were leading me down, you know, a certain path. Like, oh, you can't have sleepovers, like that's bad. Like, you're gonna be a loser. And I'm like, uh, it doesn't make sense to me, even in my adolescent brain, so fuck that. Yeah. Uh so yeah, maybe maybe that's all part of it.
SPEAKER_00I really and that's funny that you answered in that way because that was my next question. Was that do you did you ever feel like your parents thought that you were going to be a burden on them? Which it sounds like that that thought, maybe not that direct, but I don't think they thought that.
SPEAKER_08I don't think they thought that, but I do think my mom, you know, and I get it, it's probably an innocent thing, and maybe it's something that like, you know, I have to be mindful that I don't carry as well, which is like trying to make people do the things you want them to do using fear and using like the worst, the worst possible outcomes as a way to like change their behavior. And like, yeah, obviously it didn't work on me, but it clearly left some kinds of remnants that like inform what I consider, you know, at this point, like what is what does it mean to be a burden, you know, and like what am I what am I proud of? That I dodged it.
SPEAKER_00Man, and and it's so funny as I'm thinking about this in real time, listening to your answer. I'm thinking about obviously on the other side now being a parent and raising kids. And it's like obviously you you want your kids to turn out successful for yourself and primarily for them to make sure that they can handle themselves and that they're gonna set themselves for a successful life, whatever that means, or you know, a whole bunch of different stuff. But at what point, you know, think about how long it takes. At what point were our parents, could our parents be confident that we were on a good path?

SPEAKER_00You know, like after college, like after college it takes. So up until then, you're just looking at every decision that they're making and wondering if this is throwing them off path, but like, because like you're not gonna know until 20, 21, maybe they don't go yeah, yeah, right. Like you get to that decision point, like the the point where you when you're actually confident that your child that you've done a good job raising your child doesn't happen until so late. And they're going to make so many decisions that you agree, disagree with, fight with them on throughout all those years, thinking that it could be affecting their outcome because you're not going to know that outcome until so much later on. You gotta just realize like how worrying that is, you know.
SPEAKER_07It's like you can never be certain that they're on a good path until so late. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_07I can't even imagine being in your guys' position now.
SPEAKER_08Like, I mean, granted, I I we're not even like granted. I also plan to have children, but like, yeah, it's crazy. Like, it's not like we can. predict like, oh, here are the all the signs of like you're gonna be all right, kid. Yeah, so many different walls.
SPEAKER_00And the reverse of the the reverse of that's true too. Like you don't know what is going to be like the the indicator that, oh shit, it's not gonna go well. Yeah. And that's we go back and forth between, you know, uh as parents decide these sorts of things, like we go back and forth between uh, you know, private and public schooling, right? Because I was private you know Catholic my whole life, all through college, everything I was was all um and Megan was as well until college. Um but you know so we have these discussions and it's like oh you know public schools like they have this bad rap like you're gonna get a better uh education if you're at a private Catholic school. Um and then I just you just look at all of my friends like all of you guys all public school right and it's like are you happy with how they all turned out right like you know you can be good and have success no matter what environment you're in uh and so yeah but also I mean it works the other way right is like we're are we are we still whoever we are because we went to public school or were we always going to be this way it didn't matter where we went right like and and I think about it character thing it's a big big piece of it. I went to an all boys high school and it's like when I look back I'm like oh man I wish I had gone to the local public school because I feel like I would have wound up in the same place that I was now without having to go through that whole you know situation that I dealt with there. But just like you said, who knows? Like am I the am I where I am now because of the path that I led there or you know would I have gone somewhere totally off Hilter if I had probably been in a different environment.
SPEAKER_08Yeah. Yeah that's a good example yeah my minor one that is more of like a if I get to think about this answer what I would be proud of. I am proud of the fact that uh I I've managed to build a reputation for uh a lot of my friends as someone that they can like talk to about like stuff and like process thoughts and whatever else not that like I'm trying to be uh a therapist by any means but like it is nice knowing that people almost like make a point out of wanting to discuss things with me one-on-one whenever they're going through something or they need advice on something whatever and I have noticed I'm like oh man it's cool that like you know that's a thing like it's it's uh and and also it's a thing that only gets highlighted in one-on-one scenarios which makes it even feel more special um so yeah it's probably my other yeah that's a good one yeah having someone that's conf that's comfortable explaining to you knowing that you're gonna listen is like the biggest thing and provide useful feedback uh is is like is is big I think that's what most people I think that's what I found with a lot of conversations is that a lot of times people are just waiting to talk about themselves.
SPEAKER_00You know it's like oh you're talking about you okay cool I'm like it's like going in one year but I'm just thinking about what I'm saying next waiting for when I can butt in rather than like receiving what you're saying and giving you feedback about what you're talking about and keeping the subject you know if you have something to to talk about cool it's about you like this is all about you rather than being like oh yeah you had a situation like that well let me tell you about my situation that you know I will say a lot of the times my way of those discussions is bringing up my experiences.
SPEAKER_08Sure as a touch point for it. Yeah as a touch point for it but yeah so often like if there's a is there if there's like a through line in why people maybe enjoy choosing me to have those conversations with it is almost like me surfacing a thing that they already kind of know and they just need someone else to point it out of like hey here's why you're doing this by the way like like or here's what you're afraid of or here's what you're not thinking about and you're just avoiding this but this is really what it's about. Yeah it's kind of nice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I've said that to Megan a bunch of times that like whenever there's a sit whenever there's a situation a lot of the times the person that's in the wrong like they know they're in the wrong yeah like they're very aware of it they're just so they're just in too deep to pull themselves back out and be like sorry I'm wrong I messed up they're just so far into it like everyone knows the right answer to these things things. You know it just takes someone else announcing it be like hey just to let you know this this is what happened. You should be aware that that you screwed this up whatever yeah exactly all right cool uh Brandon what you got I don't want to be the only one all right cool good episode we're imagining Brett Brennan's like all right good we're done see ya it's okay all right go ahead my mine I think will be will be quick um but I I'll I'll do two two since since you both did.
SPEAKER_02Yeah yeah of course and my first one I don't know if if proud is the right like word for it or if it's just something that I'm like thankful that it has happened this way and like feel like fortunate that I get to be this way. But I am proud that I've ended up in a spot where I get to like be around my family as much as possible. And I think that some of that is like like growing up not that my dad wasn't there, but my dad like worked a job that he like had to work at and worked 10 hour days, six days a week and there was a lot of things that he like didn't get to participate in. So like being able to like sign off on my computer at a reasonable hour and like sit down for family dinner and like be there with the the kids and like eat with them and and like have that like as like like a family tie.
SPEAKER_00And like I there may have been one of Teddy's games that I didn't get to go to like one of his baseball games and I think that was because like we needed to keep some kids home so Megan had to go instead. But other than that like every practice every game uh for for Teddy and and being able to go to um you know James's music classes and I I every Saturday morning I took uh I took George to like a a little making music class for like like little kids to do and and like that that kind of stuff I've always like I always coming up wanted to like prioritize that in life and being able to do that and being in a position where I can I like again I don't know that proud is is the right word for it because I know that there's a lot of like like falling into the right situation certainly helps with that but being able to like stick with that and and to to put myself in the position to be able to do that um is something that's that's really important to me and something that I you know take a lot of pride in in in being able to do and and be present for. Absolutely man.
SPEAKER_08Absolutely I mean like I think that's something to be proud of for sure I think I think there's more agency you have in having cultivated that situation than you realize. I mean like you could I feel like there there's a debate that our circumstances are completely based on chance and also not at all based on chance. So like uh yeah I think I think there's there's some some reflection of your intention uh in your circumstances at the end of the day and you know that's pretty awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I think it's so I don't know if we talked about it here but it's but it's funny talk or hearing about older generations and about how the not not cutting down you know anyone's parents or anything like that, but just the way of the times that like the dad just like weren't involved in the raising of the children as much. You know, their job was going to work and you know that was that was part you know changing diapers or I think we mentioned it here, but so when you talked about um you know and like they're you know they just didn't have the access to these types of work at home or work from home situations and things like that that I think we're in a much better situation now that allows you to make those choices for yourself and your family that that that is beneficial for everyone. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah and like whenever my dad did get to go to some of the things he was always like so happy to be there and like so proud to see us do whatever whatever we were doing.
SPEAKER_00And I know I know if he had that kind of access or or had a situation that would have allowed him to do that, he really would have wanted to. And that's something that's always you know stuck with me to say like I I I want to do what I can to to not do that. Especially because I know I knew that that he would have he certainly would have wanted to and I would have taken advantage of that if he could. I I feel like I'm um doing as as good a job as as I wanted to do like thinking about that that part of my life and being able to being able to do that. So something something I don't take for granted. And Brendan you know this uh because because in college I was the same way I never have like a workout schedule at all like the gym is not like a thing that I like I don't have a gym routine uh but over the last like three years I've reliably done there's been a couple of times where I like like one week I had pneumonia or whatever. So like my weekly streak is is is off. But um I've stuck to two to two and a half hours in the Peloton every week uh for the last like like three years uh trying to stay stay heart healthy as much as I could. So that's that's something I'm proud of too especially because for the first 30 what 33 years of my life 32 years of my life like just did not have any type of routine or that as like part of my life at all at all. So um that's that that's something that I'm like a a positive life change that I've I've been able to make stick that I've um I'm proud of being there around your family more and being there for a long time with your family. Hope so good things hope so yeah cool.
