Howdy, gents abroad. Welcome to another episode of our podcast. Two weeks in a row. So we're on a streak now. We're back on it. Um, so uh getting the good vibes going. And uh as we continue to head into summer, uh the the night that we are recording this is Thursday night, so the World Cup is is starting today. So we're getting to the swing of that. Luckily, I mean, we're we're we're located in host cities, which makes it a little bit more exciting. And I know Brandon, I know that you're going to horn. When are you going, by the way? When is that game?
SPEAKER_01June 25th. So it's like the it's the last round of the group stages.
SPEAKER_04Okay, cool. Yeah, so we got that going on. And uh and the poor audio quality that you're hearing us is because Sarab and I are recording on the same computer because he is down visiting me uh in DC. So Srav is here as well, sitting next to me. Um yeah, so I guess let's just uh let's just get into it. Hope everyone's going well and uh hope you enjoyed the uh coming podcast with what's good. Uh who wants to kick us off?
SPEAKER_01First, since you already started to talk about it a little bit, uh my what's good is is the World Cup. Super pumped for it at the start. I know we were talking a little bit um in uh uh I don't know if just geographically, like you said, being in a host city, if I'm like more immersed in it or not, or if there if if the rest of like the world or the rest of the country hasn't really built up the World Cup. I feel like the rest of the world probably has. I but I I don't know what it's like outside um outside of here, but in in this little bubble, it's like uh you know everybody is is pumped. There's all kinds of watch parties and fan fests, and there's like a big one that's going on in Dilworth Park. There's one that's going on in this park like that's like right around the corner from our house that eventually will probably take the boys down to to go catch a game. Uh there's gonna be like food trucks and uh games and and all kinds of stuff and outdoor watch parties and and and stuff. So um just just really good vibes, really, really exciting times. I don't know how the USA team is is gonna be this year, but I'm just just really excited to see see everybody play. It seems like there's there's a couple of groups where um like I feel like you the traditional powers aren't as dominating or as like oppressive as they typically have. Usually you have a pretty good at good good idea of who's coming. I think there's uh there's an opportunity for more of the uh the smaller countries to have some some upstart upset stuff. So uh excited to see see how it all plays out. Um you mentioned we're recording on Thursday. Um that South Africa is not one of those upstart countries. They look terrible against Mexico. Mexico ended up winning two to nothing, and there was three red cards in the game. It was just it it was a total mess. I don't know if that's like uh that's the nerves of the of the kickoff or what. But um regardless, we're really excited. Uh boys are starting to catch some some soccer fever too, which is uh which is a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because we were just talking offline and I was saying that you you know, you guys are both in host cities and Australia and New York, and I'm in, you know, I guess a suburb of DC. Um, but I just feel like there hasn't been as much hype around it. Um and uh and I know Brandon, you mentioned that ESPN is, you know, might be a little butthurt about contracts and not getting the rights to it, but I just feel like there hasn't been as much hype uh around this World Cup, which is surprising given that it's that we are a host country for it. I don't know. I just uh I I I almost feel like, again, I'm not as locked into US soccer, so I don't know. Maybe Brandon, you can talk about this, but like it seems like we had a lot of momentum building up with a lot of household names between, you know, your Landon Donovan, your Clint Dempsey, your Christian Polisic. And if it feels like there's not a lot of hope or optimism for this team when it seemed like even go back to like with Freddie a dude, that we were like building this wave of US soccer that, like, hey, we were gonna start being a major player on the world stage. And it seems like that's hasn't really come to fruition yet. Is that accurate? Is that is is that reason why there's not as much hype around it? Is because the US team is just, you know, there uh and they're participating, but not really any chance of winning.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I would say it because it it it's it's a little bit of both. Um because like comparing comparing these teams like the Landon Donovan teams and the Clintonsee teams and and like like all those, objectively they're better. Like this is this is yeah, the no no no objectively, this team here is is is the best. Like this is the best chance that we're gonna have to make any type of noise at the World Cup. Like that being said, we're still not gonna be expected to to do anything. Like I think I think most people think that if the if Team USA makes the knockout stages and if they win one knockout stage game, that's that's probably meeting like the maximum potential that they could do. Um which uh there's this this documentary show thing that HBO put on called Us US against the world, uh, which is like profiling like the national team and like the current players and kind of where they started from. Uh and when you look back at it, like yeah, we we had all this momentum from the the those teams in the past, uh, and then we missed the 2018 World Cup, like completely, which is like like such a such a come down from what like US stock was building up to. Um but then like you had all these guys like Christian Polistic and Tyler Adams and Weston McKinney, um, and all these guys who were like like like the next great generation. Um Christopher Polistic was on that 2018 team, but you know, was really uh a young player and and was really like a regular player in the 2022 cycle. Um so 2022 was like the big comeback. And Team USA didn't even win a game in 2022. They got through in the group stages because they tied every single game that they played and every every other team had a loss. So they they ended up making it through just because they they you know didn't get beaten by anybody. Um, which is like kind that's kind of how the group stages work a lot a lot of times. And you know, obviously soccer does a lot of draws, but um, to make it to the knockout stages of the World Cup and not have won a game is kind of like uh, you know, you didn't really meet expectations, you didn't really show anything. Um and a lot of those players, so that's where, you know, previously those Landed Donovan teams and and and in the past, all made up of like mostly MLS players. Uh and I think there's uh our goalie, starting goalie plays in MLS, and there's one guy, Tim Reem, uh, who played uh the majority of his career overseas, but is now back in in the US because he's like 38 years old. He's he's old now, but can still play. Everybody else is like playing for like like in in Europe and for like major teams.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I was gonna mention that that like before, like having one of our players play on a major European top league was like a huge deal. Now it seems like most of our starting nine is playing overseas in a top league. Is that correct?
SPEAKER_01Almost everybody. Um well, everybody is playing on a top league, but not even just a top league. Like they're playing on the top teams, and they're like like contributors for those top teams. You got you know, Polistic is with AC Milan and start and is starting. You got um Tim Weia, who was on on Juventus. Uh, I'm not sure if he got sold to another like one of the big, big Italian teams, but is is playing in Italy. Uh Weston McKinney, who's playing for Juventus as well. Um Tyler Adams is playing in in the Premier League. Like everybody, everybody is playing for like a good club and and making noise. That's kind of the other kind of piece of it is like they were all doing really well. I feel like if this World Cup hit two years ago, it it would have been a lot different because that's when like Christian Polistic was lighting it up with AC Milan, and it feels it feels like everybody was actually performing really well with where they were at the club level. Uh and this year they're on those big teams. They're not as major contributors as maybe they were in in seasons past, which may be kind of like the the tempered expectations to it. Um but you know, I think if you if you're just looking at like kind of the progress from uh for US soccer, um all of those guys, like that golden generation, they're all like 26, 27, 20 years old. Like they are in their prime. This is this is like the best chance that Team USA has ever had, um, which that part is exciting. The part that kind of sucks is that it's that our best chance that we've ever had, and we're still not really expected to make it much past the first round of the group stage. So like, is that progress? Like, yes and no. Like, yes, it it like we were never at a point where we had that, and we always kind of um, you know, in the history of the World Cup, like going back to 1930, whenever the first one was, Team USA has won eight games in in the World Cup total. Which is i is kind of wild to think about because there's been some big games, like I guess the games that they've won have been big, and like like when they won their first knockout stage or made it whatever, and then you had you know uh Tim Howard standing on his head against Portugal and had all these like iconic performances um that came through, but it hasn't translated into a whole bunch of wins on the global stage. Uh and having it at home and then having this again, this this like really hyped up generation that's in the in their prime that are all playing uh like uh again, like at the at the top level that you possibly can play. Uh it's progress that we're not relying on a you know a third or fourth year league in in MLS on the global stage to like cultivate and draw a lot of our players from. Um progress in that way, but the fact that it's still not like we're not having arrived with the big boys, you know, this would be our chance to maybe do that.
SPEAKER_04But again, not not expected, which is Yeah, it's just it's just hard to imagine that we'll ever I mean football is king here. And it's hard to imagine soccer, you know, foot football is king everywhere else. It's hard to imagine us really taking a big step forward until like that changes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and my my theory on it was always that is with youth sports now and and with all the CTE and concussion research and parents being more hesitant to put some of their uh you know their children in that environment, that soccer would be kind of be like the alternative to that. And that would be like soccer's big chance to come back, and we'll have more more development opportunities there.
SPEAKER_04Um I don't know if on like a youth recreation, like everyone plays soccer, right? Like everyone plays it just at some point it's like it it it it's it it isn't it isn't as real of an uh of like a career path as like one of the other major sports where like you know you see all the contracts that all these players are making in you know, baseball, basketball, football, things like that. Like for some reason, I don't know where it stops, but like everyone plays soccer growing up, right? Like everyone plays t-ball, everyone plays soccer, but like soccer just doesn't have the foothold it seems that those other sports do.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, and that's and that's one of the one of the things that uh was was covered in that in the first episode of that documentary, which we're not even through the first episode, and there's like four four episodes in it. So I'd be interested to see what it is. But like one of the beginning things is it it takes a quote from one of the old national team coaches of the US who's like some German guy, but this was back in the I don't know if it was in like the 80s, early 90s or whatever, but they they asked, they were like, like, why isn't soccer a a big thing in the US? And the guy mentions, he's like, when you're a kid, you look up to your heroes, and like there's there's no soccer hero for US. Like if you're if like if you're already into soccer, you have Landon Donovan, but nobody's like looking at Landon Donovan and being like outside of every four years when he came up in the World Cup and there was like hype around it, no one is looking at that as like, oh yeah, that's my hero and that's my guy. So like looking at at that, I think if there's a if there's a chance for that to change and as we get more people who are in these more visible leagues, because yeah, MLS is MLS is our home league, but anybody who watches soccer, and there's there's a a a decent and growing soccer contingent in the US of people who are like like will watch it on TV, but what they're doing is is they're watching all these these like European players play for when they're doing it. And I think if if you if you get an American that can perform at that level and and be seen at that, then it it becomes a little bit more of like uh someone that the kids can look up to that they can try to emulate their game on and kind of grow it in in that way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I don't know, I mean that's a good point about the heroes things, and I don't know if it's a chicken or egg uh scenario, but like watch Sports Center and see how many soccer highlights there are. Like definitely not the A block, B block. I mean, maybe in the World Cup it changes. We'll see, but like they're not giving highlights of any of the leagues, let alone Americ, you know, American leagues might a little bit, but not like not even European leagues, like where like the good professional soccer is going on. Like that's just not so I don't know if like the lack of highlights or exposure is preventing kids from doing it, or obviously you know, ESPN is like, well, nobody cares about soccer, so we're gonna lead with the four major sports, and then soccer, you know, maybe we can fit in it at the end. But yeah, I mean, we'll see, you know, the first game is tomorrow night at 9 p.m. Uh so it sounds like slides are high that we should be able to get out of the group stage and then we'll see what happens in the knockout round. All right, uh yeah. Yeah, so uh kind of building on that uh my what's good is one of the major sports in the US right now. I'm talking about basketball. The Knicks. My God, what a thrill. What a crazy game to watch the like all of these games. Like it's yet to I I again I know that I'm not like the actual season-long NBA watcher or basketball watcher. I watch like college basketball when there's either big rivalry games or when it's you know the tournaments. Uh and same thing with the NBA, like when the playoffs are happening, that's like kind of what I like to get a little more plugged in, and obviously the Knicks have made it really easy. Um, but it is I despite all that, I'm just like I feel it in my bones. I'm like, these are some incredible games to watch. Like it's just like I don't know, you're on the edge of your seat the whole time. I feel like previously I would get really bored watching NBA basketball sometimes because it's like, I don't know, there's a I I I used to have this feeling of like it doesn't none of this matters until the last quarter because like that's when like I don't know, it's like you'll see where things are gonna land and like when the time runs out, like then we'll see. Uh for some reason, like I'm watching now and I'm like every possession is like I don't know, a thrill. So I've been loving that. Obviously, when you live in New York City, you also get to experience it that way, which is incredible. And watching the city come together and not be remotely uh civil, no appropriate behaved. None of those things have ever been about New York. But what I really the thing I appreciate is more there's no like you're not a real fan. You know what I mean? Like anybody who's rooting for the Knicks right now is welcomed with like open arms. And it's also like I live in areas of Brooklyn where I'm like, you guys don't watch sports, like you're here just because you're swept up in the energy, but also like there's no judgment about that. It's like, yes, like everyone is like, let's do this, let's all root uh for this team together. So that's been really great. Um, that's just like one that's my that's the impulsive what's good that I forgot that I was gonna have. Uh the one that I'd actually been thinking about is um more classic for this podcast. Uh it's a show called Widow's Bay. It's on Apple TV. Yeah, it's been picking up a lot of buzz lately because people have been watching and they've been talking about it. And I have to say it is one of the most like original shows I've ever seen. It is a show that refuses to be categorized as comedy or horror. It just keeps giving you a lot. Comedy horror. It keeps giving you a lot. But here's the thing: if you think about things you've watched in the past that are comedy horror, like Shawn of the Dead, I don't even know, whatever else. Screen. Yeah, but comedy horror is still like more comedy at the end of the day, right? Comedy kind of like has a way of being the overpowering thing and you gotta watch it to laugh. This is a show where it will be incredible comedy. Incredible comedy, incredible jokes. They're not like played for laughs, if that makes sense. Like they're not like, oh, here's a moment. Like, it's just like a dialogue in passing that you will be cracking up at, but they'll just keep moving. But then it'll have like scary stuff that honestly, if you happen to have your brain think about it at night in a dark in your bedroom, and you're kind of like, uh it's good, it's good in both regards. Um, I uh I think the reason I'm like really jazzed about it is because I downloaded I think like the most recent like four episodes, uh, and I ended up like watching them on my flight to San Francisco. Um and just watching them like back to back in that way, I was like, dude, this show is amazing and just takes you on this like journey. You also like just have no idea where it's going and what it's trying to like, what it's gonna figure out. It's just truly unpredictable. And at the same time, like, yeah, it just gives you these heaping like helpings of both like comedy and horror in a way, uh, without really surrendering either, if that makes sense. You know, like it's like no no, we're not gonna actually just be a horror show now. Yeah, it's uh highly recommend it.
SPEAKER_01It's it's anybody notable in it?
SPEAKER_04Uh so it's Matthew Reese, who's a guy in a show called the what is it, um, The Americans on FX. You know the one I'm talking about? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, with Carrie Russell.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. You've seen him in other stuff. He's maybe like uh he was doing the what was it? There's like a lawyer show that like was on HBO for a while. Um bring back like a very old uh classic like black and white lawyer movie or show, and they did it with him. Uh, I don't think it lasted more than two seasons. He's fantastic. He's so good.
SPEAKER_01He's great in the American.
SPEAKER_04And he's he does a lot of like physical comedy in this show. Uh honestly, physical comedy in like, and it's and this is one of those things where it's like when a show is like this, you'll be watching like the scariest thing on screen, but you'll also be laughing a little bit because you're kind of like, oh shit. Like, you know, it's like what he just did there is like a Looney Tunes reaction. You know what I mean? Like it's just it's it's hysterical. But there's two episodes left, or the ninth is out, then the tenth episode is gonna be the season finale, and I am so excited for that episode to come out because I I so so want to know what this is all building towards. Like, what is it that they're going to like? What is the story that they're gonna basically go with? I also don't think we're gonna get all the answers because you know, a bunch of people have been like, Do you where do you think this show is going? Like people who have watched the show there ask me, and I'm like, all I know is that this is going towards season two. And unfortunately, that that that should set all of our expectations in a different way because we are not gonna get all the answers. It's not gonna be this like very neat, like, here's why everything has been going on. I think it's gonna give you a few answers and a lot more mysteries that they're gonna want to unpack later. Coincidentally enough, today uh it was announced that it has been renewed for season two. Um so uh Do they have a date on that?
SPEAKER_01Is that gonna be like three years from now?
SPEAKER_04No, no, I think it'll be sooner. This this is also not a show. Like, again, the shows that take a while are shows that have like actors and like a lot of the effects and stuff that's like requires a lot of time or people you know schedule. This is a team that's like dedicated to this show. So I think like realistically, we could probably see the next season, like you know, late next year, potentially, if not even sooner, if they're already been shooting it. Um yeah, so good. Uh what else was I gonna say about this? Just as a point of reference, one of the things that made this show kind of click for me completely is that uh it was created by a writer of parks and wreck. And you kind of you kind of see like what if someone decided to do parks and wreck, but like make it about like a hot like it's and so in that sense, like a comedy really works well, but also like the horror stuff is like just really really well executed. So um is it like jump scare horror or like situational atmospheric horror? All the really all be about. I think I think they play with it because like when you first watch the show, it feels like there's uh there's like a what is the horror element of this week? Like it it kind of builds like that where it's like, oh, this week it's like this thing, and then next week it's this thing. But then slowly they build towards like why are all these things happening here? Uh and that becomes kind of like this overarching plot that they are starting to like, you know, slowly peel the curtain back on. Um, but yeah, it allows them to do a lot of fun horror stuff inscribed by you know several classic movies in different ways. So it's it's great. And again, I'm like the most or the least horror interested person. I like like movies that are like, I don't know, there's like a psychological element maybe or like a social commentary element. Obviously, like you know, obsession is one that I would love to don't do that. Obsession is one that I still want to see as of you know, a little bit of that element, maybe.
SPEAKER_01Um the Jordan Peele ones, like exactly.
SPEAKER_04Uh but yeah, it was bad, man. It's uh it's the real deal. I didn't believe in the hype and I started watching and I was like, yep, this is uh this is this is a really fun time. That's awesome. Yeah, I I mean I've uh I've heard a lot that Apple TV is really they seem to be hitting all the right notes, that they're going for quality shows over quantity, which is like the opposite of the stream of pop books. It seems like a lot of the Apple TV shows are really strong that people are really enjoying. And the the best part is like Apple TV, it's because Apple TV doesn't care about being a good business. Like they don't need Apple TV shows to be like profitable and make money because like Apple TV treats its entire entertainment arm as like a part of marketing or like the Apple brand that's like trillions of dollars. So like they're not measuring that or whatever, or like studios streaming services are like you see what the byproduct has is like people just giving the keys to really creative, you know, artists to do what they want to do and make weird shit and uh no pressure to like you know, like put the action scene in the first two minutes because like works with most networks. I mean, Apple TV's whole like strategy is very interesting because they got into it and then one of their biggest things is that they got into that they had the whole uh MLS deal, right? They had uh the MLS deal with uh with Messi and he began so that they were the first ones to really dip their toes into like the sports realm and that aspect, and then now they're producing good shows. So, like, yeah, I mean it seems like they're just they're just finding whatever works for them. Um
SPEAKER_01Uh as like Yeah, and there's I I've heard a lot of good stuff about Apple TV shows that like I hadn't even like heard of. Like I I don't know. I think that most of what they're putting out is good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like just good just good quality stuff.
SPEAKER_04People say that like Apple TV might be the only real heir to what HBO like kind of modeled initially, which is like prestige television.
SPEAKER_00Prestige television, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Not turning content out left and right, but doing like really, really thoughtful, measured kind of releases where you know if a show is coming in on Apple TV, there's gonna be something about it that makes it special. Alright, sweet. Yeah. I'm always looking for good shows. I it I have I have two different lists going. I have uh one for shows and movies that like I want to watch when I'm on the road, movies that I want to watch when I'm like in an airplane going somewhere, and then I have a list of shows for Megan and I to watch, you know, because like a lot of time, you know, like Marvel shows, things like that. We talk about like I'm like Megan is not about that. Um, but something like this, I feel like it would be one of the shows. Wow. Does Megan Android horror? You know, we really like Stranger Things, and now like that's not horror. That's not horror, I understand. But um, we're also we also I was just telling Brandon about it. We just uh we recently started season two of Dark. So one of the greatest shows of all time. So I and like and I've heard it come up, right? So like we watched season one. A little more thought. It is, right, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, we watched season one a couple of years ago, and it's it and then and then like we had a lot of other things that we wanted to watch and catch up on. Um so then like it kind of fell off. Now I'm like, hey, like I really want to get back into dark. Man, if you haven't seen that show, what a whiplash to try to get back into it because if you don't know about dark, essentially the premise, I'm not spoiling anything, but it deals with time travel and it deals with different timelines, but it's the same characters across different timelines. So so much of the show is keeping track of who is who in each timeline, what their relationship is, whose son and daughter this is, who's dating this person. The web of characters and how they're all interconnected is so important to follow the storyline. So when you watch season one and then you take a couple of years and you throw it into episode one of season two, it is such a struggle and a mental exercise of trying to remember who these people are. And we try to watch a recap of it, but like it doesn't go into enough detail unless you watch like an hour-long one because we're willing to do.
SPEAKER_02Um just rewatched the season.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, right, which probably would have been better. But I remember even at the end of it, we're like, okay, we're like, we're trying to follow along and be like, all right, cool. Like, we think we're at a good point point of where these characters are going. But everyone keeps saying that's a really uh excellent TV. One of the best shows you'll have a seat. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So question for you on Dark. Do you guys watch with English dub, or do you watch it in German and read subtitles?
SPEAKER_04Uh English dub with subtitles. I did German with with English subtitles.
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's how I I had to do it. The the the unsynced lips moving really bothers me.
SPEAKER_04I tried watch I tried listening to it in English first, but one of our favorite shows is Money Heist, uh which obviously is a very popular show, but that was but that's a Spanish show, and that one we listened to it in English dubbed with subtitles. So same thing, though, like it wasn't lining up with the butt like we are a primary, we are a primarily subtitle household. So like that stuff doesn't it doesn't bother me at all because I'm primarily just reading it and then I'm hearing what they're saying. So it doesn't bother me as much because I'm so used to subtitles. So like whatever they're saying is fine. And like the voice actors that they get to do it, same as in Money Heights, like it sounds very accurate. Like it the voice sounds like the character that is on the screen. So like it's not that distracting uh from our perspective.
SPEAKER_01One thing about Dark, beyond just like the story, which is awesome and has like the and it's very obviously like complex and has a lot of the moving parts and it's deep in and of itself, just from like a visual standpoint, Dark is one of the most pleasing movies to watch. Like the cinematography and the colors and everything that they do in that show is just so top-notch. That like like blew me away even beyond just like the story. Like, just uh if you I could watch it on mute and and have a great time.
SPEAKER_04It has like a mood. Yeah, yeah, a total mood, yeah. Yeah, so yeah. Yeah. Also, like it it'll always be in my all-time list of like I think I I'll always love it as like maybe one of my top five shows ever because I love shows that take like giant swings and really complicated kind of storytelling. But the problem is, and this is just me, I'm not this is not actually statistically important. Like that says like I think like 95% of those shows cannot stick away. They just never can, and then here comes dark and spins a web that is to Brent Brendan's point just now, incredibly difficult to follow and super intricate. And it was they they landed that fucking plane. Like I was I was blown away. Yeah, I'm really excited to get into that one. Um all right, well, that was a little bit of a segue. My what's good, bear with me. I kind of have I kind of have a lot. Three things. Number one, Sarab is here, that's always appreciative. Uh last last episode, I think, I talked about uh getting to meet up with one of our other good friends in the UK. Um, you know, just that comfortability of having someone around who you just fall right into just like a you know, comfort and easy conversation is very appreciative. So good having him down here. Um number two, uh so Megan and I, I think I mentioned it, we went to a concert last week. So it was Machine Gun Kelly and Wiz Khalifa. I really appreciate Machine Gun Kelly, he's one of my favorite artists, but Machine Gun Kelly and Wiz Khalifa is a very interesting group. And I was very interested in what the demographic was going to be there. Um and it was mostly like our age group type people. It seemed like it was more of like the MGK punk rock uh, you know, people uh fans were the ones that were there. Very, I mean, I the thing that I will say, like, regardless of whether you like an artist or not, whether it's your favorite or not, like I think that it's pretty universal. When you go to a concert, what you want is for the person to care about putting on a good show. That like they actually put effort into it. And MGK and Wiz Khalifa both did that. And they made a mention of it uh many times. And I think it's a little bit performative, but also like it showed out in like the act that like they were very appreciative, like, hey, we know the time's right now, we know that you're spending your harder-earned money to be here. We're gonna do our best to put on a great show for you. And like, even just saying that, it's like cool, like this guy like gets you know, they're not just gonna mail it in. And like, I always think it's wild when you look at these tours that these artists are doing, like how they have to do this night after night after night after night. I mean, it's not every night, but right, like every other night. Sometimes they do two nights in a row, like they're constantly putting on these shows in different places around the world. It's like, man, I give a lot, I have a lot of respect to these guys that go out and give the same energy um at these multiple shows. So uh they both put on a great show, um, played all of the hits. Like, you don't realize how many hits Wiz Khalifa has, like, so many just like like singable, like uh like ones that you just like instantly recognize and you're like, damn, I totally forgot that this is Wiz Khalifa and like everyone's singing along with it. Um, that's always a good time. And then like there are obviously like super fans of MGK that are just there like singing every word of every song. Um, it's always just good to be in that concert environment. But one thing that was very interesting was that as I was talking about how we were interested in what the demographic was going to be like, there was a a surprising amount of children there, and children from like two years old on their parents' shoulders to like 10-year-olds that are there with their parents, to like 16-year-olds that are there by themselves. And Megan and I, obviously being in the parent phase of light, found that like very interesting. One from like the little kids that are there that, like, from like, okay, like two-year-olds is like, all right, like are they picking up anything? Like, probably not, but you know, us being old parents are like, man, they're hearing, like, they're like they're not wearing headphones or anything, and this loud concert, like that seems so dangerous for the kids. Then to the 10-year-olds who are at least there with their parents, but it's like the content of these concerts is not exactly PG-rated, you know. So you can also smell it in the air. Oh, right. It's it was an outdoor amphitheater, and it's a good thing that it was well ventilated. You know, I mean, whiz Khalifa, like, you know, he just comes out. I mean, he just smoked blood the entire time that he was doing his set. I mean, it was a big and it was and like and uh and MGK's microphone was a giant cigarette. The set stage behind him had the head of the Statue of Liberty smoking a a uh joint. So, like, you know, it it's just part of the atmosphere of being there. But like, you know, they're singing along with these songs, and Megan's like, man, how are they allowed to do this? I'm like, you know, hey, yeah. Yeah, exactly. Like, it is what it is, but then like there was one where Wiz Khalifa he had a song where he pantomimed a very aggressive sexual act for the entire song, and it was like, whoa, these kids watching it are probably like, what the hell is going on? Like, it got graphic on stage. Um so uh and then and then and then we were looking at the 16-year-old, you know, the group of like 16-year-old girls or whatever. Um, you know, and I was like, and I and then of course, you know, again, this is all from the lens of a parent now. But I was like, but I turned to Megan's like, hey, like, you know, they're 16 and here, whatever, like what age would you allow our kids to go to this concert? Megan's like, I don't know, like college? I'm like, college? What? Like, that's so late. Like, I can't imagine being that late. And she was just like, and and like she was like, really, like to this concert with these acts and what's going on, like, you know, like what would you say? And I was like thinking about it, I was like, man, you know, maybe college that they can go like by themselves. Like, I don't know if I'm like, I'm in a totally different way of thinking, but like dropping my kid off at a concert like that, knowing knowing what we know about these artists and like what's gonna be going on at this concert, it's like what I feel comfortable with my you know daughter just dropping her off at that at 15, 16. Like, the more that I thought about it, the more I was like, man, I don't know, college might be sound all right. Like maybe like we can go when she's 16, but like I'll be there, you know? Megan and I will be there listening along with it. It was just one of those moments that I was like, man, I you know, when we were in high school, like we would go to things like this like all the time, and it like wouldn't be a big deal.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I don't know if like times are different now or just my mindset has completely sifted because I've like you know, I it's how many, how many of those concerts that you went to in high school though had somebody on stage graphically depicting a sexual act for an entire song? I mean that's I I I think it's the content of the concert really that would like dictate that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it is, but like did our parents know back then, you know, like we we we had it in the past where you know the first albums were MM and it's like you know, were your parents aware of you know the content on that stuff? Did they care? This also makes me think of like, I don't know, like I'm sure I went to shows that were probably not appropriate for my age, but I also don't feel like I remember any of them. Like, first off, I don't remember them. Yeah, like because they weren't that remarkable or memorable. The second reason I don't remember anything happening that was like that crazy that I wasn't already like fooling around with my friends about. Like I would argue that when we were 15, we were we were simulating uh insane sexual acts. Whoa, speak for yourself for fun to make each other laugh at sleepovers than than like anything Wiz Khalifa might have been doing. That's very true. Which I mean, you have to imagine that kids nowadays are not more uh sheltered than we were, you know, like they're more exposed to things at a much earlier age, like they're probably much more aware of this stuff uh than even we were at that age. But uh, but yeah, I mean, all that being said, like the concerts are great. Again, they it seemed like they they came out there and they put on a great show, uh, which no matter who it is, it's an infectious environment if everyone's into it, everyone's sing along, and there's a lot of energy up on the stage. So um that was a good time. And then obviously, just time away from the kids um is always appreciated and gives us time to just uh you know enjoy adult stuff as well. Um, so uh that was one. And then yeah, all of my things are just like on like the small periods of time that we have off that luckily we're making the most of. And so one of our friends had a get together this weekend and he does it every year, and he basically just invites everyone over, and it's like a big cookout. So this guy, he's one of my military uh friends. We've been through flight school together and we've known each other ever since we started. And uh, so he bought a house down here, he's was based over here, and he just like went to town on his backyard, and he raised a bunch of like trees, he built a zipline course, he has a bunch of swings and things back there. He had he built a bunker, he built a legitimate like in-ground bunker that that they have like sleep outs uh out there uh underground. He has a big outdoor like movie theater that he set up with an inflatable movie theater that he takes down. He got a whole bunch of like pool furniture from like one of the pools around the area was getting rid of all of theirs, so that he like picked up all so he has a bunch of like pool loungers and tables and chairs and everything out there. He it like his backyard is just like playground for kids, essentially. And so every year he invites a group of people over with their kids and it's like come hang out for the day, um, and then spend the night as well. Uh, everyone that spends the night there, they bring their own tents and like they back up their truck and they just like cook out stuff and everyone just has a good time throughout the night. We haven't got to the point of spending the night just because like our you know, you know, we still have like a three-year-old that we're managing, and um and uh you know, I don't also aware that like it's it's an opportunity for the guys to really because like the guys are the ones like we've all been through flight school together, so like the guys know each other very well. So it's like and also an opportunity for like the guys to just like let loose for a night. Um, so I'm very aware of that as well. But for this one, one of the things that he was like, hey man, like for this one, it's gonna be on this day. And I was like, well, I don't know if I can make it if my schedule works out. He's like, all right, cool, whatever. But like also, we're gonna be doing gel blasters on this one. So go ahead and pick out you know a couple of gel blasters and we'll do that. And so if you haven't seen these, these are think of something like a paintball gun, but instead of paint pellets, they're these little beads that start out like tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny, but then you put them in a bucket of water and then they expand to, you know, a little ball, you know, thing of like a ball-bearing uh size, but it's a water pellet. And so then you have a hopper and you fill it with these water pellets and then you shoot them. So Megan and I, like, everyone has different thoughts over like Megan and I, like, we haven't introduced like guns or weapons or anything like that. So we're like, oh shit, like this is really putting us kind of in an awkward position of having to introduce this, but at the same time, like we don't want them to feel left out in these situations and something that they might enjoy. So I got the so I so I ordered them. I didn't tell Megan that I ordered them, but she saw that they arrived. It's like, hey, like I just want to have them and we can at least like make the decision on our own. So like the first day uh I got them. I loaded up all of the, you know, I got the the little pellets submerged in water, got a a whole bunch of these water pellets. And so then I loaded one up and I was like, hey, Megan, I want you to just go outside and I just want you to shoot me with it. Like, I want to know what these, what these feel like, obviously, if I'm gonna shoot them to their to our kids. So I was out there with my shirt on, you know, and she was like maybe like 20 feet away or something like that. And she shot me a bunch of times. I was like, okay, cool. Like, you know, it stings and maybe like it's like a look, it's like this little like pinched, but it's not it's not really bad. So now I'm gonna do it with my shirt off just to see what it feels like. So I went to take off my shirt and she was like, whoa, Brendan! Whoa. And so my back was just covered in these welts from where she shot me with it. She's like, and she felt so bad. She's like, oh my god, I didn't know that I was hurting you that bad. I was like, no, like, and honestly, it didn't, it didn't hurt that bad. Like it was just a little pinch. You know, like it's it's not nothing. Like it definitely feels something. Um, but so she felt really bad about that. And we're going back and forth, like, okay, do we introduce this to the kids? And I was like, how do I do this safely? Now I'm introducing like gun rules to them, uh, you know, like treat, never keep, and you know, and I'm like drilling this into their heads uh because I like, you know, I brought them out and I had targets set up and you know, had all these like safety demonstrations, and I and I did the same thing with them. I was like, hey, Luke, here, take this one. I'm gonna stand over here, shoot me, and I'm just gonna show you what this looks like. And I'm like, hey, if any, if any of you guys want to get shot with it, because when we go here, like this is what it's gonna be. They're playing like capture the flag and stuff like this. Like, it's definitely with a mindset towards like you're shooting each other with it. So I wanted them exposed to that. And so surprise, like Logan wanted nothing to do with getting shot at. Lucas was shooting the targets, and then at some point he was like, Hey Dad, would you want to shoot me? I was like, Yeah, sure, man. Like, go ahead. So I shot him a couple times, and uh, and he was totally fine with it. He's like, All right, cool, like now that I know what it feels like. Um, so I'm really proud of how he handled it. And then we and then we went to the cookout um or like the get together, uh, and everyone parti luckily, I'm really glad that I did because like everyone had them, everyone went through it, everyone's kids had them. I would have felt really bad if it was like, hey man, like I mean, hey, that's part of it being a parent, right? Is like setting those boundaries of like just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean that we're going to. We have our own rules. So not that I was scared of that, but like, hey man, you know, he doesn't get to see these people very often, it's once a year, and they were all doing it. Um, and we we obviously got them like full face masks and everything, so that they were prepared for it. And it turned out to be a great, I mean, it was it was awesome. We had a great time. Uh, we did capture the flag, then they and then he did this really um fun one where it was one parent and one child, so it was two on two, and it was basically just like a bracket tournament where you would play against someone else, and then whoever win wins went on. Um, so it was it was really fun. It was just uh another instance of like, man, you know, these kids are getting exposed to things like earlier than we maybe would have that were kind of like put into these situations of like, you know, you know, just just like another like parenting thing as we're going along of like, man, we weren't really ready for this and expecting it, but I'm really proud of the way that our kids handled it. Um, you know, I don't think they like they don't care either way, one way or the other. They just enjoy playing with them when they're available. Um, and so it was an enjoyable time of there. Uh and then for the for the rest of it, it was just hanging out and drinking and having a good time. And uh man, uh when I get a little bit of the competitive streak in me, it comes out strong because I don't get very, very much of it. Uh, but so they had a cornhole tournament, and uh, and me and my partner, like, it's just fun where you get to just like talk shit to each other, uh, and it gets really competitive and everyone's really into this tournament, and like the kids are watching everything. So uh I love that um of being able to do that. So yeah, just a good time hanging out, a lot of good friends that we've had for a number of years. Uh the kids, as they're getting older, it's just fun to see them, you know, going growing into kids and who they hang out with and what they enjoy doing with each other. So uh really good time with everyone. I know that was kind of long-winded, um, but uh yeah, bunch of uh good stuff that we've had to uh that we've had going on over the last the past couple weeks. It's fun.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So late later tonight, you and Sarab are gonna have a uh gel blaster fight. So what's happening?
SPEAKER_04Gel Blasters in the dark? Now we're talking. Now we're talking. Let's do it. All right, all right. So a couple things, content judges we want to talk about. One of them, so off to the concert. When for every concert that you've been to, at the end of the concert, what happened?
SPEAKER_00The encore.
SPEAKER_04The encore.
SPEAKER_00One more song. One more song.
SPEAKER_04No one in the audience moves. They all stand there and they start chanting encore, encore, and then they come out and they play one last banger song, right? Every single concert that I've ever been to does that. MGK did not do that. I was so shocked. He was like, All right, cool, like, you know, like thanks, all you guys have been great, been an awesome time tonight. You know, like get home safe. All right, cool, goodbye. And he left. I was like, okay, cool, like here we go. And then people just started like slowly like filing out, like, yeah, what are these people doing? Like, do they have they never been to a concert before? Like, you stay and we chant encore, then he comes back out, and that just never happened. Everyone just left and that was it. I learned that the hard way, and I've gone to enough concerts now to know when that happens and usually why it happens. There's a lot of venues where if for whatever reason the artist does not start performing by a certain time, sometimes they're delayed, sometimes there's like technical issues, sometimes not that I'm gonna, you know, generalize what GK and Whisky Leafer were doing, but like I know rappers do not have a good uh punch of being punchful. So a lot of these venues though will sometimes have like insanely hardcore uh like timing of like it's it's a wrap. Like at this point, like people need to be leaving, otherwise there's gonna be like fines and issues or whatever else. So I would suspect that is what happened at that concert. I've been to a couple concerts where we were like, what? There's absolutely needs to be an encore. Yeah. And then you're like, oh yeah, like you know, it's just you you learn later that it's like a thing with the venue because like they didn't get to start early enough. It's like yeah, so we looked up afterwards and it seems like Virginia has a sound uh ordinal at the PM. So so we think that that that's what it was, but also like why not end a little bit, you know, a little bit earlier. Yeah, keep sure that the encore happens. Like, that's such an integral part of going to a concert that it was just so jarring to be like, what the hell? But then also, like, we knew that, you know, so we looked that up about our our friend, so um uh Russell's wife Alexa, we were supposed to be with them down in Charlotte for this concert the past weekend, but I had a trip and I wasn't able to make it work logistically. But they went to the concert the weekend prior. So I texted her, I was like, yo, was there an encore at your shirt? She's like, No, there wasn't. I'm like, what? Does he just not have an encore like it's just not hard to show an encore? Um how was the set work? Was it like were they alternating or was it like no Wiz came out first and MGK came out? It was Wiz came out first, then MGK, and then in the middle of MGK set, Wiz Cole came out from their new from their new album that they just dropped, and then it was back to MGK uh at the end. So that means MGK was headliner. He should have been planning to do one or two something. Yeah, it's surprising. Yeah, it was just odd. It was just odd. Um the other thing from that concert that there are one thing that will automatically make me think that you're an asshole. And I realized it. When you're leaving a venue, right? It's always a train wreck of trying to get out from the parking lot, no matter what, whether whether it's a sporting event, concert, whatever it is, it's always a big ordeal, leave the parking lot. What is the number one rule? What is the socially agreed upon method when two lanes are coming together?
SPEAKER_02Every other car, you zipper.
SPEAKER_04You zipper, you zipper. Netflix universal, you zipper. If you don't zipper, you're an asshole. Like I'm not gonna do anything about it, but I immediately lose all respect for you. That is it's just agreed upon. You let one car go from one lane, and then you let another car from the other lane, and everyone just does it, and it just works well. You know what you know where your spot in in in uh line is, but uh on this one, it was my turn to go, and the car, you could just tell. He was just like right. I'm like, dude, you you know, you're saving yourself what 30 seconds here, just and you're and you're making yourself an asshole with other people in the car. That was one thing I was like, man, this is a this is an unspoken rule that everyone knows that you zipper. And if you're the asshole that doesn't zipper, you're automatically an asshole. And just it just pissed me off.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, they they they did that a lot around here. Yeah. Both for like but both like highway driving, like both construction and like leaving parking lots and shit.
SPEAKER_04It's it's terrible. You know what is a weird thing that I learned about as you know, as we're talking about like merging. So like if you're on if you're on a three-lane highway, right, and then one lane is being shut down. So then you all have to merge into two. So like the left lane, let's say, is being shut down. So the left lane has to merge into the middle lane to become two lanes, right? You're going from three lanes to have two lanes. That most people try to like, well, the agreed upon thing is that once you see that the lane is shutting down, try to move over into the middle lane. And then you always think that the assholes are the ones that like keep going all the way up to the end, you know, where like it's being shut down. But logistically speaking, that's the appropriate, that's the appropriate thing to do. You're supposed to use as much space as you can.
SPEAKER_01Because otherwise they might as well just close the lane way back where everybody's moving over. Yeah. You're creating more traffic by cutting going over early.
SPEAKER_04More traffic, exactly. Yeah. It's just one of those things that like you always see those people flying by in a lane that's clearly going to be closed. You're like, this this motherfucker. They're trying to be an asshole in front of everyone, but like that's how everyone is supposed to be. You're supposed to take it all the way down to the end and then merge at the very end because you're creating more traffic by trying to move in. Again, guys that don't really drive it often, but uh, if anyone out there is driving, now you know when lanes are merging, that's the appropriate thing to do. Uh all right, cool. We kind of uh meandered through our what's good. Uh I don't really have any other major topics. Uh Swab, do you have anything in terms of I think you said you didn't for this week in history? Nope. All right, cool. Uh then let's move into trivia. So as we move into uh the summer here, a big a big thing, especially for us on this podcast that we generally talk about are movies. And so summer blockbusters are a big theme of the summer. So our trivia this week is going to center around movie blockbuster. So simple question and answer. Um, but uh, but that's going to be the topic for it. So with that, uh, who went first last week? I know that Brandon won last week, and I think we're at 7-5, I believe, overall. I've just seen the office. I think I went first. Okay, cool. Go with it. All right. Uh, so to kick off our summer summer movie, summer blockbuster trivia. Brandon. Question one. Steven Spielberg's Jaws in 1975 is widely credited as the first true summer blockbuster. To drum up terror, the mechanical shark was famously kept hidden for the first hour of the movie. What was the actual reason Spielberg did this? Now, the way that I'm gonna do this is that it's gonna be two points if you guess it outright. If you don't know the answer, then I'll give you multiple choice, and then it's one point if you get it correct from there. So, do you literally the actual reason why the mechanical shark was famously kept hidden for the first hour of the movie?
SPEAKER_01I I don't know this one. Wait, so I can guess and then and then I'll get multiple choice, or should I just say I don't know and then get the multiple choice?
SPEAKER_04Neither one. Neither one.
SPEAKER_01If you want to show uh a guess, I'm gonna say, is it because it wasn't built in time?
SPEAKER_04Good guess. I'll say that's incorrect.
SPEAKER_01So no.
SPEAKER_04All right, your uh multiple choices. It was a creative uh homage to Alfred Hitchcock's style of suspense. The mechanical shark constantly broke down and didn't work. The studio couldn't afford the special effects budget to show it more, or the shark looked too small on the widescreen camera.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go with B, that it kept broke breaking down.
SPEAKER_04B is correct. Yep, the Mechanical Shark constantly broke down. Um uh Bruce is what the Mechanical Shark was called. Uh, he hated saltwater. It sank to the bottom of the ocean on on day one, forcing Spielberg to shoot from the shark's point of view accidentally into accidentally inventing modern film suspense. That's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yep. That is pretty cool. Honestly, that is very impressive. But also, he doesn't know how much how much cool shit is a product of like unexpected constraints and challenges you didn't expect you would have. Yep. Yeah. All right, cool. So Brandon got one point for that. Uh to Sarah for question number two. In the summer of 1996, Twister became a massive box office hit by tearing up the big screen with groundbreaking digital visual effects. However, the production relied heavily on brutal practical effects to simulate a real storm on set. What did the crew use to create the deafening, bone rattling wind that the actors had to shout over? Ooh, leaf blowers? Leaf blowers is a good guess, but incorrect. Your choices are a modified jet engine from a Boeing 707, four commercial grade wind tunnels borrowed from NASA, a synchronized line of high-powered airboat propellers or industrial orchard fans used for clearing freeze spot. D is incorrect. It was actually a modified jet engine. True, a real Boeing 707 engine to a to a tractor. It was so loud and and powerful that it blew debris through windows and required the casting crew to wear specialized radio headsets just to communicate. Wow. Yeah. I would not have guessed and getting my hands on that. Yeah. All right, so Brandon is up one-nothing. Over to Brandon after this question. Before Harrison Ford landed the iconic role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark in the summer of 1981. George Lucas was fiercely against casting him because Ford had already been in Star Wars. Which television star was originally cast and forced to pull out due to contract conflict?
SPEAKER_00Television star from the early 80s. Oh man. Man, I don't really know. 1981. Trying to think of some like early 80s TV shows that has like a like a leading man that would be in Indiana Jones. And I'm not I can't think.
SPEAKER_04Good guess. Incorrect. Your options are Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, David Hasselhoff, or Pierce Brosnett. Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck is correct. I feel like Pierce Brosnan would have been like two.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he doesn't seem to be old or old enough to do that. Was he on TV?
SPEAKER_04I think Tom Selleck was uh Pierce Brosnick.
SPEAKER_01No, Pierce Brosnan. No, I think I think I think Tom Selleck is who I was thinking of when I guessed Burt Reynolds.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Who was the who was the Magnum PI guy? Was that Tom Sellick?
SPEAKER_04Tom Solak, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that that that's who I was thinking of. Damn.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so the answer was was Tom Selleck, correct? Selleck was officially cast, but CBS wouldn't release him from his contract for Magnum Pop. A few weeks later, a writer strike delayed Magnum anyway, meaning Selleck could have done both.
SPEAKER_01Ah, sucks for him.
SPEAKER_04Missed opportunity. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't I wonder what Indiana Jones would have been without Harrison Ford, though.
SPEAKER_04If it was Tom Selleck instead of funny that George Lucas was like, this guy's a little too famous. He already has our horse, like I don't know, man. We're giving this guy a little bit too much. Like that's a weird way to the movie because this guy's too famous. So he might be perfect for the role, but yeah, he already has the whole Hans thing though. He's already huh? I don't think it's as famous thing, though, but I do understand from a directing perspective of like people are gonna think no one's gonna like actually have the like feeling of experiencing the story because they're just gonna be like, oh look, that's Hansal. Yeah, like so that's why you know he mixed it up, but it works. So all right, um, yeah. All right, so Brandon's up 2-0 now. All right, to Sarah. In the 1996 smash hit Independence Day, Will Smith's character famously drags an unconscious alien across the desert after a dogfight. While doing so, he delivers his iconic line. Now that's what I'm talking about. What does that smell? What was the actual cause of the terrible odor Smith was reacting to? Sulfur is incorrect. Alright, your options are rotten seaweed used to texture the alien prop, a nearby field of rotting brine shrimp from the Great Salt Lake, the latex suit of the stump man overheating in the sun, or burning diesel fuel from the special effects smoke machine. What was the second one? The second one was a nearby shield of rotting brine shrimp from the Great Salt Lake. The first one? Rotten seaweed used to texture the alien prop. A. Rotten seaweed used to texture the alien prop is incorrect. The correct answer is B, it was rotting brine shrimp. They filmed the desert sequence near the Great Salt Lake in Utah. A massive die-off of brine shrimp had occurred right before filming, creating a horrific stench that Will Smith was genuinely complaining about on campus.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I wonder if they wrote that in because he said that in a take. It seems like he just said smell.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Uh all right, Brandon's up two nothing. Going into question five. There are 10 questions total, just so you guys know. All right, uh, question five, Brandon. In Jurassic Park in June of 1993, Dennis Nedri completely shuts down the island security system. When computer hacker Ray Arnold, Samuel L. Jackson, tries to break into the system to override it. A cartoon animation of Nedri pops up on the monitor wagging its finger. What phrase does the animation repeat? Those of the that don't make the connection, Nedri was uh newman in science.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Feel like I I feel like I should know this. I hope I know it when I hear it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's a tough poll off the top of your head, but once I like through them, it's like, oh yeah, I can picture it.
SPEAKER_01With with Samuel Elville. I'm gonna say, say what again, bitch. Oh, wait, wait, wait, is that is that a different movie? Is that a different movie?
SPEAKER_04All right, your uh your choices are again. We are looking for uh the phrase that the cartoon animation of Nedry pops up wagging its finger as he tries to break into the system to override it. So your options are access denied, or you didn't say the magic word, or nice try, Mr. Arnold, or system locked down out here.
SPEAKER_01You didn't say the magic word.
SPEAKER_04You didn't say the magic word is correct. That's it. Brand, I always know the ones that Brandon's right. Yeah. All right, so Brandon's up 3-0. Luckily, if you get a couple without getting the options, you can jump right right back into it. All right, so Rob, question number six. In the summer of 1996, Tom Cruise cemented his status as the ultimate action star. Sorry, I didn't give the uh the background of that one. So you didn't say the magic word. The full loop screams, uh-uh-a, you didn't say the magic word, uh-uh-a. It completely stalls the system restart and forces them to resort to turning off the main power grid. Uh all right, Srav. In the summer of 1996, Tom Cruise cemented his status as the ultimate action star in Mission Impossible. The movie's most iconic nail-biting scene features Ethan Hunt dropping from a ceiling vent into a highly secure CIA vault on a cable. While filming the high stakes descent, Cruz kept tipping forward and hitting his face on the floor. How did he solve his balance issue to pull off the perfect levitation shot? Getting into like a skydiving pose? Uh incorrect. Your options are he wore a hidden back brace that locked his spine completely straight. The crew ran a second invisible wire down his pant leg to anchor his his feet. He stuffed British pound coins into his shoes to act as a counterweight, or they filmed the scene completely upside down and flipped the camera footage. I think it's big B. The crew ran a second invisible wire down his pant leg to answer his feet. Is incorrect. Fuck, was it the coins? It was the coins. The coins, yeah. I feel like I had heard about the second string though, but damn it. Yeah. So Cruz simply couldn't keep his body perfectly hor horizontal on the single rope. Right before director Brian De Palma gave up and to try again another day. Cruz asked the crew for loose change, slipped the heavy coins into his shoes, and perfectly balance himself just inches above the vault floor.
SPEAKER_00Dude is dedicated.
SPEAKER_04All right, Brandon's still up 3-0. Back to you. All right, when the Matrix reloaded hip theaters in May of 2003, it featured one of the most complex high high octane highway chase scenes in cinematic history. Because no existing city would allow them to shut down a major highway for weeks of filming. What did the production team do? They some of those are kind of hard without options to choose.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I don't know. They uh they filmed it in cornfields.
SPEAKER_04All right. Your options are. They built a fully functional 1.4 mile loop off a three-lane highway on an old military base. They used a massive indoor warehouse lined entirely with green screens. They filmed it in a real city entirely between the hours of 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., where they animated 95% of the vehicles and the road entirely using C C VI.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go see. They did it in the that in the correct answer is the first one.
SPEAKER_04They built out a 1.4 mile track and an old military base. They constructed a massive private highway loop at the decommissioned Alameda Naval Air Station in California. It cost over two and a half million to build just for the sequence, and it was entirely demolished after filming. That's wild. That they just had to use money. The first one made so much. Yeah. But did they know they were, you know, how did they know it was going to be that? Alright, cool. So Brandon is up 3-0 still. That's just around question number eight out of ten. So three more questions. The summer of 2023 was completely dominated by the Bardenheimer cultural phenomenon. Greta Greta Gerwig Barbie went on to become the highest-grossing film of the year. The movie features a hilarious brief cameo from the real life daughter of Barbie's creator, Rouge Hamler, who did she play. Uh, you know what? I'm gonna give that to you. That's right. So the correct answer, the elderly woman on the park bench whom Barbie called beautiful. Uh Barbara Hamler, the namesake for the original doll, is the woman sitting on the bench when Barbie enters the real world. The scene serves as a beautiful, quiet comic, bridging the creation with its creative campus. Alright, so with that, three to two now. So Brandon's up by one with two questions remaining. Uh all right, Brennan. Brandon, question nine. Before Lawrence Fishburne was cast as the legendary sunglass-wearing mentor Morpheus in in the Matrix, which kicked off the Blockbuster season in early 1999, the Wachowski's offered the role to a massive action star. This actor famously turned it down because he read the script and admitted that he simply didn't understand the concept of the movie. Who was I had Glenn and fucking that'd be fucked up? Wait, for Orpheus? Morpheus. For Morpheus, who was originally uh offered the role as Morpheus, who is who later was cast as Jordan Smith. Actually, I think I must be picking up on that.
SPEAKER_00I'm thinking of Neo.
SPEAKER_04I feel like it might be this might be AI fucking it up. But let's go with your answer and I'm gonna say Will Smith. Will Smith is correct.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Will Smith was offered he was offered Neo, not oh really. Yeah, Ki Keanu.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's that's what threw me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. They first offered it to Will Smith.
SPEAKER_06Interesting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01Man, but yeah, but he he didn't take it because he didn't understand it.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Well, obviously, I'll I mean I'm gonna give you two points because like you got the answer. You got the correct the what what it was uh you you had the correct answer for the wrong question. Uh not to your own fault. So all right, cool. So you're up uh five to two now, and that pretty much steals it. Yeah, but for the last question for Sarav, in May of 2012, the Avengers assembled on the big screen, shattering box office records and cementing the Marvel cinematic universe as a summer juggernaut. Director Joss Wheedon famously gathered the cast for a last-minute top secret pickup scene after the movie's Hollywood uh Holly Hollywood premiere, resulting in the famous post-credit scene where the exhausted heroes eat Schwarma in silence. Why did Chris Evans spend the entire scene leaning his head on his hand? Sorry, as you think about that, the information given for the previous question is is correct. This was about uh um the matrix. So Smith was offered the role of Neo, uh, and parts were considered for Morpheus, but he turned it down to make Wild Wild Wild West instead. He later admitted he would have messed the movie up saying Fishburn was perfect. So Keanu. I don't know. Um can you repeat it? Sure. Uh so director Josh Whedon famously gathered the cast for a last-minute top secret pickup scene after the movie's Hollywood premiere, resulting in the famous post-credit scene where the exhausted heroes eat swarma in in in science. Why did Chris Evans spend the entire scene leaning his head on his hand? I think I know this one. I'll give you the option. He was genuine genuinely exhausted and fell asleep during the during the take. He was hiding a prosthetic jaw covering a full beard he grew for another movie. He had shifted to eating the actual swarma during the first take, or it was a character choice to show Captain America's deep depression. Is correct. I would have given you two which one. Uh Evans was already filming Snowpiercer. That's right. Snowpiercer and had a thick beard that he couldn't shave. The maker department glued a prosthetic jaw over it to hide it, but it it looked so chunky and fake that Weedon told Evans to just cover his face with his hand and look completely wiped out. I gotta say, uh, outside of the the Matrix one being wrong, I personally am kind of astonished at like how many movie anecdotes, like behind the scenes fun facts that I've never heard of. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I knew, I mean, I will say I knew half of them because Brandon's like the Matrix. Because Brandon's stupid. No, no, no. Brandon's stupid and just no, no, no. Like just the ones that Brandon was getting happened to be the ones that I did know. Yeah. Um, like Tom Sellick and and the Matrix thing. But yeah, there's so many others where I'm like, these are kind of like interesting. Yeah. They're not like boring fun time. Yeah. It's always interesting about like, you know, we know these characters are just like, you know, you can't imagine anyone as Iron Man except for Robert Downey Jr. now. Same thing. Like, you can't imagine Keanu uh Reeves as you know, as being, you know, Neo can't be anyone else but him, but it's like you're very close to being other people that would have like who knows how we would have perceived these movies. Um I think is interesting. Um with that, just sticking on it just for the question of the week. So as we're talking about summer movie blockbusters, we're heading into the summer season right now. So a lot of big movies coming out just to uh just to throw some of them out then. Uh there Disclosure Day, uh Toy Story 5, Supergirl, uh The Last Jackass, best and last, um, a new minions movie, the live action Moana, The Odyssey, Spider-Man, brand new day. There's a bunch of big movies coming out this summer. So, with that, what is the one summer movie that you guys are most looking forward to? I feel like I probably have a good idea. But uh Brandon, why don't you kick us off with the one that you're I would almost say a better question would be like outside of the obvious one?
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, I I have a different and and I'll I'll I'll go outside of the the obvious one for me is the Odyssey. Like, like Pump for the Odyssey, like like everything about that. I even I started to read um like The Odyssey, Homer's The Odyssey that I had. I I think I read it. I had the book for I think it was like a freshman year history class in high school, um, but I found at my parents' house that I still hung on to. So it's like, ah, let me let me give it another read since it's been a while, which um has been interesting. Uh it's wild how much of that story is just kind of like like all the interesting parts of that are like kind of yada yada. Like it's like uh it's like one of the little stanzas is like everything happens in that stanza, and then everything else is about them like complimenting each other. So it's like it's it's like it's a it's a cool story in that uh you know, it's it's like ancient superhero kind of stuff that happens, but the actual like logistics of it is like, man, it's uh it it shows its age and the way the stories were told, but it's also like you know, people that were written 6,000 years ago, whatever it was, 8,000 years ago. So that's the one that I'm like selfishly for me most excited to see. The one that I'm I'm most looking forward to is is is next week. It's actually Toy Story 5. Um we went to see a Super Mario Galaxy movie, which I took George to, which was his like first movie going experience. So it was it was just the boys. We had a boys' trip out there. We went and and sat down and and watched it. And George, for being two in it being his first movie, was like enthralled by it and like loved sitting there and watching Super Mario Galaxy. But as we were leaving, they had like one of the big cutouts for like that they do for promos. And it was a Toy Story 5 one. And it has like all of the characters like around the little like leapfrog thing. And then you can like go and stand in front of the leapfrog thing and get your picture taken. So we did that. And since we've done that, George has been asking about the the frog toy story. And has been wanting to see and watch the frog toy story. Which happens to be coming out on June 19th June 19th that I'm off for. So like like Friday I'm gonna again we're gonna do a boys trip to the to the movies to to go and see the the new new toy story.
SPEAKER_04So um rare it's super on the nose with so many people can relate to is how technology is now you know replacing our toys we grew up with in the thing of the toys like everyone relates to that. And I think it's about how they analyzed sorry go ahead finish with finish with that.
SPEAKER_01No, no and I I was just gonna say it's like and Toy Story is like one of those things like Toy Story was my first movie. Like the first movie that I ever watched in movie theaters in kindergarten uh went to go see Toy Story with a girl that I liked and it was like like I thought it was like uh it was like hot shit that I was going on this like date or whatever but it was just like like whatever. Yeah. How old is it kindergarten kindergarten? Yeah had a little crush on this girl and like we were like friends or whatever. We would like hang hang out on play had play dates and one time like we just like our parents took us to the movies and we we watched and um but like like I so like I like like Toy Story was my first movie that I watched. I fail I'm fairly certain Toy Story was the first one that I like introduced Teddy to and that James like by proxy uh came up in stall and and while it's not uh it wasn't George's first and he had never uh that might it actually might have been the first movie that we saw but like all of our boys have been like really into Toy Story and like playing with the the Toy Story toys. So I just feel like it's like a kind of like a through line that that we've all had and we'll be be uh excited to get George in the movies to watch it all I am glad I let you finish.
SPEAKER_04I was like yeah my friends I forget what this was we were just like talking about like movies that are coming out talking about Toy Story 5. I remember I was just like riffing and just being like ridiculous for like being stupid and I was like I was like yeah I don't know I'm really torn about this like rumored post credit scene this movie's gonna have because it's like I'm tired of like I think there like you know I don't need a Toy Story 6 necessarily but like I don't know I have to say this post credit scene is kind of compelling. Apparently it's like a vibrator comes out and I'm just like it's like yeah it's a different kind of Toy Story at that point.
SPEAKER_01It's great. And that's a and like and I like I have to say like I'm I'm excited for the movie going experience. I haven't really watched any of the trailer stuff. I don't know I thought that Toy Story 4 was the perfect ending.
SPEAKER_04Like I thought that that was like 3 was the perfect ending.
SPEAKER_01Toy Story 3 was was the perfect ending. Toy Story 4 I thought was a really good standoff for like Woody is out doing his thing Buzz is doing his thing like I thought that that was Toy Story 3 was like like a perfect cap for the trilogy. I really appreciated Toy Story 4 and the way that they they they handled it um and like kind of finding your place as a toy and like the whole like lost toy stuff. But I I thought that was that I don't think they need to go back to the well I don't know how they're gonna do it. I'm not expecting the like the most out of this to be really good.
SPEAKER_04I think the it's very very relevant the whole idea of like the right like the technology thing and if everyone's like giving you the tablets with it. Like I was like that is that is maybe the best reason to do a number five of this franchise. Right actual timely uh component there. Man I yeah like like I I I appreciate that take on it um how like narratively how it's gonna work when everybody was supposed to be gone I don't know how it's all gonna turn I haven't seen Toy Story three or four I knew that five was coming out and I was excited to watch it we do a family movie night every Friday uh you guys are wreck whenever we can so I was really excited to watch it with the kids and because like no we've already seen that I'm like what you guys watch this without me that's such a betrayal that is a betrayal no I'm left with like do I just watch it by myself I feel like I need to the picture movies are not like fucking you know have to worry about like oh this read continuity. I know but I have such a list of other movies to watch that now I feel like it's a chore to have to watch Toys three or four I've been looking forward to watching them but I was going to watch as a family with the kids especially because they're they're really emotional and they're they are emotional they're super emotional especially three yeah like this is a good one to watch for the family and they watched without me assholes assholes um all right have you one no okay all right yeah it was just on Twitch 35. Sorry and uh I just want to say before you go on to yours but you made it seem like like Odyssey was like the obvious one is that largely expected to be the highest grossing movie of the summer yes and no I think it just came out that the Odyssey is going to be rated R. So like that immediately changes the economic picture of it but like I think if it were wasn't for that like it would handily be the biggest movie of the summer. I'm very interested in that why why why is it I think it's like Nolan makes like event cinema still so just because it's a Christopher Nolan movie yeah that's good selling and and I and a star power like Matt Damon is like one of those those leading men that still draws and everybody else that's in it too. Well even with like a Spider-Man will be coming out that was the commentary I was going to add right it's like I think Odyssey feels like the biggest movie but we're probably slightly prisoners of our perspective and like from a real like what matters culturally standpoint it's gonna be it's the biggest movie. What's gonna make the most money it could just be fucking the live action Moana you know what I mean yeah could be yeah like the shit that like kids are like flocked to and then families have to bring their kids over and over like those are the movies that like that's why Lilo and Stitch was like an insane runaway hit because like it made so much fucking money and like kids just were like obsessed. So that becomes like a whole different thing. So who the fuck knows? Um and I will also say like Spider-Man could quietly run away with like the biggest gross of the summer because every time Spider-Man movie comes out you are reminded that like he is the most popular superhero period. Like for whatever reason it's like kids, adults like he will he's just bigger than everybody uh and like you know the next the next ones up are like don't even combine to still compare to Spider-Man. Um so we'll see it's gonna be it's gonna be curious to see like who walks away with like the summer box office crown per se. My number one definitely Odyssey I would say I'll share like my two three and four but I'll also say my two three and four combined are not matching the hype I have for Odyssey. Wow that's surprising to me that's you guys are so hyped for oh my god yeah it's just i I don't know there's something there's something there's something magical and also it's like a it's like a a perfect track record. Like disappoint me once maybe I won't look at no on the same moon cord but like even when he's confused me with Pennet I'm still like this was an incredibly different and new experience. Like I got to like really I don't know just like see something I know I'll never see anywhere else. No one's gonna like feed me a kind of like collage of stuff that I've seen in different movies. You know what I mean? Like Nolan just tries to do some different shit.
SPEAKER_01Anyway yeah there was there was a there was a moment in like the the most recent trailer some of the like the language in the way that they talk like with like using daddy and stuff it's kind of like it's just it's just different than what you expect. You expect like sword and sandals like like you would would expect like like kind of like the more proper English type of of dialogue and it doesn't seem to have that which threw me a little bit when I saw the the trailer.
SPEAKER_04Yeah yeah I don't know we're gonna see it's gonna be it it is curious but didn't dampen my excitement at all. But it's hard for me to believe it's not a choice right like Nolan doesn't do it.
SPEAKER_01It's gotta be intentional.
SPEAKER_04I'd be very curious to see how it plays and also it's like I I'm glad he did like a very long interview on like Colbert or whatever. He was just like and also this is everyone who's criticizing like how did how dare you like cast all these like people that are not white like and it's like none this is not real.
SPEAKER_06It's a poem like right none of these are actual people.
SPEAKER_04Like what do you like none of there's no historical accuracy that it's supposed to be here. Yeah. But whatever besides the point uh my number two and again it's not even close but like it's like a lukewarm number two for me is probably Spider-Man only because like the Marvel thing like maybe it's dying breaths are still like things I'm like somewhat invested in. So I'm just curious and I'm I'm gonna watch that.
SPEAKER_01I don't I would I wouldn't say I'm actively excited about it at all but like I know that it's like up there as like maybe the movie I would want to see next and I like I haven't seen any like because I'm so disconnected from all that stuff now I haven't seen any of the trailer like what's what's the premise of it really indicated much.
SPEAKER_04So far it seems like it's it's it's almost like the trailer is really just a continuation of where we left Peter Parkville which is nobody knows who he is.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And he is now basically just living out his life as like a Spider-Man with secret identity. He clearly doesn't know like his friends don't know him, you know and he's like maybe running into them again and trying to like figure out how to like uh build a relationship anew. Um but then other than that the trailers have mostly just indicated like him just doing classic neighborhood crime fighting you know and there's like oh here's John Bernthal as the Punisher. Yeah and here are like the bad guys from season three of Daredevil or season two of Daredevil like the the what is it the the fist right is it the hand. The hand the hand yeah it's like alright cool but like they haven't indicated much else. But I will say somehow somehow the Spider-Man movies like even when they're not great they're still like pretty watchable and entertaining. Yeah. Um so and also I love that like Tom Holland has said straight up that like his experience making the Odyssey like made him place like like kind of like requirements on Spider-Man. He was like hey I don't want to shoot a crazy action set piece without us knowing what it's gonna serve for the story. Like and it's such a great revelation of like how much of how many of these movies are written as like here's a cool thing we could do and then they figure out how to as opposed to you know uh the the organic line um he's he said that he was on set for the Odyssey like on the phone with the studio Sony yeah and he was like hey you need to figure this out uh number three for me uh just out of pure nostalgia that I'm excited for um uh supertroopers three uh is coming out in August and it's just you know I just love those guys and is it gonna be a great amazing movie I don't know but I'm I'm probably gonna laugh and probably gonna just be happy to see like these characters again that like were very near and dear to me from like you know the first supertroopers which is like a fucking classic and one that like you know we'll quote to the end of our days. Yeah so I'm excited to see that. And then number four is Disclosure day but it's probably more of like a I'm I'm I'm intrigued and I love the subject matter. Obviously aliens like I'm just always uh into it. Spielberg uh doing a movie that is very much not what Spielberg has been doing for like the last several years. Uh it's kind of him going back to like his you know kind of main like big blockbuster like entertainment kind of vibes. Um so those are those are my my three out there after all my number one far and away is Disclosure day. I am so pumped to see that and mainly because the movies that I have that have left the most lasting impression on me are ones that make me feel something or that make me think about something deeper. And it seems like that's exactly what disclosure day is going to be especially in the wake of his comments about how this movie kind of like it you know it it delves into the theological aspect of like and it questioned about you know the point of the movie is the question that like if you believe in aliens then do you then does that disprove God or does everything else right God. Like I'm just all in on those types of movies. Already one of my favorite movies is called The Arrival which I think it's mentioned on here before um but but that that movie I love. And I think especially because those types of movies uh I really want to watch in the movie theater where I'm usually engrossed in the movie rather than watching it on like an iPad on movers. Like I want to be just like fully involved in it and like feel whatever makes it feel think whatever you know wherever my you know head goes down to so um those types of movies uh I really appreciate the most so that's why I disclosed today. I'm really it's not just weekend. I was hoping that maybe we'd find the time to be able to see it. But we'll see if it works out.
SPEAKER_01But yeah that's definitely my number one one one that I'm not gonna see in the movies uh that I know that I'm not gonna watch but that I'm gonna be really excited to see when it comes out on streaming. Um Coyote versus Acme. Yeah is coming out this summer and I'm actually really excited to watch that. Because that's that's like the movie that that Warner Brothers like they it was like a year ago.
SPEAKER_04They tried to shelve it as a tax write-off and then people really but it tested really well like like people really loved the movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah and like it was just like the economics I think Warner Brothers was really going through it this was I it was more than a year. It was it must it was it it might have been like during the pandemic or like right after the pandemic.
SPEAKER_04Yeah it was like right after yeah it's like right after it's been years like Will Forte is in it like a bunch of other like people like it looks it looks fucking bull.
SPEAKER_00It looks legitimately funny.
SPEAKER_04Yeah yeah um all right cool well I think that uh I think that brings us to the end of the podcast we did it yeah we made it does anyone else have anything uh anything else to add anything they want to bring up talk about yeah last thing I mean go go USA go next yeah just like a really quick thing for me I uh finished Daredevil they introduced they reintroduced Jessica Jones in it so I started to watch Jessica Jones again it's fine I thought I would like it a lot more I thought I'd be more into it I'm just like Jessica Jones or Daredevil Jessica Jones oh season one uh I like the premise of the um um the antagonist in it but I don't know it's just not me as in the season one season one of Jessica Jones I felt like struck me like a like a yeah thunder that's the same I I I loved season one I'm still like kind of like I think about it and it gives me a little shivers like it was just like a very like yeah it was intense so maybe it'll get that way by the end but I'm like four or five episodes in I'm just like okay cool I'm watching another episode like I'm not like yes I get to watch another episode and see where this goes it's just like okay cool we're just you know we'll we'll we'll see what what happens next so it's fine that's fair uh we'll see where that goes all right cool um yeah I think that brings to the end yeah just like Brandon said we got uh USA soccer coming up tomorrow night we got uh game six game five sorry of the finals I was talking to sorry about it like I kind of hope that I I mean I definitely hope that San Antonio wins a to keep the series going because I enjoy having things to watch and I'm trying to prolong the doldrums of having just baseball for the rest of the summer until we get into football but also because like I feel like New York if they do win it they deserve to win it on their home court having them win it in San Antonio would feel kind of empty uh a little bit I'm I don't know man things things I'm seeing from New York fans it's it's the it's a tough look for them it's kind of like you know what they they might not deserve to see it on on the home home court home court floor yeah I know I like it's tough it's a tough look it feels like it's like another like USA hockey thing where it's like yeah they win.
SPEAKER_01God well good for them I mean I mean it it's kind of it's it's all about like the few bad actors of of the fans it's nothing to do with the team. Yeah the it does seem like it's a lot the mob mentality of they're all getting kind of caught up on it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Especially because it seems like it's most people that like weren't alive you know that weren't alive for like you know that they weren't around for the last championship like they haven't like gone through it's probably someone like Ben Stiller who's like you know lived through it and had all these dark dudes they're just part of a mob that is getting caught up in it. But all right cool. Yeah I think that uh that that brings to an end here we appreciate everyone who's out there listening uh and uh we'll bring you some more content hopefully next week we'll keep it going and uh hope you all have a good week and are enjoying the summer and the wrap up of of school and getting into uh summer things and camps and everything that goes along with that. So hope you're all doing well and uh we will talk to you again next week. See you bye
