Howdy everyone. Thanks for joining us for another episode of the podcast. As we were just having this conversation on it, there might be something in the works of some of some branding later on down the line, maybe not immediately, but some things that are working on to finally give it a title and some more thematic music that you can readily identify with this podcast that you join us with uh every week. So we'll see. We'll see. Maybe I'll just die on the vine and we'll just keep doing it this way, but you never know. So welcome everyone to this post-July 4th episode of the podcast. Thank you again for joining us. Hope everyone's having a good week. A lot of good stuff going on, as it always does with the summer. It moves pretty quickly. We are the weeks are just flying by. Um, especially when you think about it in terms of the school season for kids. The summer seems so long when it starts, and then you just start looking at a calendar of things that are happening each week, and you're like, oh my gosh, yeah, basically back to school already.
SPEAKER_00I can't believe we're a week into July, man, and that next week is already halfway through July. I'm like, what? I know that's exactly how time works, but I know, yeah. But I don't like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the fact that fall feels like it's right around the corner is weird. Um but yeah, a lot of good stuff. I mean, some good, some bad. Last night, uh US lost to Belgium. Um, in kind in a in sadly, in not unexpected fashion of um, you know, unfortunately it's kind of how it's been over the past uh cycles that we've gone through is that we look decent against lesser opponents, and then but then as soon as we dip our toes into the big boy pond, uh it's a it's a wildly different outcome for us, which it certainly did look like that last night. Look like we were a little out over our skis.
SPEAKER_00What's that I was gonna say, is that is that how it felt for you like broadly? Because I can't help shaking, like again, I watched it at a bar with like a bunch of people in this room. Um and like I don't know, there's this energy of even though the odds were stacked against us, that felt like a very unpleasant loss. Not like uh, we've come up against it, we're just not as good as these guys. They're just felt like and even I don't know, it wasn't even like some of the commentary afterwards from like the anchors. Um I'm forgetting the uh uh the the the women's soccer star who was also kind of like it felt like you know this was lost before they got there. Like um I don't know, the energy and the vibes, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01It's just because that's been the historical precedent that no matter what vibes the USA team has, it's always against arguably lesser opponents. In every match that they had up until this, they were the higher seed, they were expected to win. So yeah, they looked a lot better uh and the coaching seems to have improved the play style, but it's always been this way that regardless of what vibes you have, as soon as you play against a team that is demonstrably better, a European team, that the outcome has been the same. Um, and I think that's what everyone was kind of saying is that a US team was overhyped, everyone is getting out in front of themselves, and every and you know, the more rational people are like, hey, pump the brakes, let's see how they look against a legitimate team. And Belgian, Belgium was that legitimate team, and unfortunately it uh it looked the way that it did.
SPEAKER_02And I uh I so I've been thinking about this a lot over the last 20, 22 hours, uh whatever it's been. And while the outcome is very similar to the way that it's been for the US, I do think it feels different. And the reason why is like uh the US is traditionally, the US has kind of punched above their weight, where they've gotten some results from some of the World Cups and like kind of made you buy in and believe, and then they come up against these like like European giants and they they defend desperately and kind of make it into a game and eventually end up losing it and and lose in in a really upsetting way. This like this World Cup does feel different, like looking over it, like yeah, like the the US has gotten some results before. They'd never had more than two wins at a World Cup in any single World Cup that they went to. So while they've eked out some results, they've never bossed a team or boss it bossed anybody the way that this US team did against Paraguay, against Australia, and against Bosnia and Herzegovina. And just like say what you want about the the the FIFA rankings, I just throw out the window. They don't even matter. The way that they award points, it makes no sense. Italy is like Italy is like the 12th ranked team in the world, even though they're not even at the World Cup. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the team that beat Italy to make it into the World Cup. And and and they earned their right there. And then we went and we we beat them with with 10 men. Paraguay was looking at it in their World Cup cycle, like in the qualifying, they allowed seven goals, the entire World Cup cycle. They they gave up seven goals. They beat Brazil, one to nothing. They beat Argentina two to one. That is the Paraguay team that knocked out Germany in this World Cup. That was the Paraguay team that was an Mbappe penalty away from taking France to overtime. That Paraguay team is no slouch, and we played them off the field. We beat them four to one. Again, in in the the two-year time period that it took for them to do the World Cup qualifying. They allowed seven goals in in like going up against the heavyweights, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, those good South American teams. And we and they looked like they didn't even belong belong in the same class as the US team. Like this, this was a different US team, the way that we were able to play. And I think the the thing that was so disappointing and shocking about last night is that it looked like a completely different team.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The team that we watched for those first three games or the first, well, I I kind of throw the turkey, Turkey, I guess we're calling them now, game out because that was all like basically all backups. And even like we switched off a little bit at the end to to ship them that third goal for them to get the win. But in the in the other three games, the team that was on the field for those games looked completely different from the team that was on the field against Belgium. I think that that's that's the disappointing part of it, is that the the parts of the game where we lost it was kind of the parts where it seemed like for the other things that we watched, that was fixed. Like the the they couldn't string two passes together. They couldn't find their teammates in open space, which was that was never a problem in any of the other games. We were one touch passing, we had movement, um, our defense was was locked tight and locked down. And that's and and there was none of that last night. Like it was it, and you look at it, kind of the start of the game, they came out, they got had an awesome shot on that. Matt Freeze made it made an awesome save. And it was kind of like after we got punched in the mouth that first time, we just kind of we we got shook, and then we we couldn't come off off of it, and then we were like, oh man, let's like let's not mess this up. And everybody was playing shaky and scared. Like everybody. Like when you have a when you have a headed clearance that's not gonna make it out of the 18-yard box, you have three of your players around, and nobody like steps up to take it. That's like everybody's playing tentative, like everybody everybody is afraid of of making the mistake, or nobody like wanted to go out and get it, which is the nobody wanted to be the guy, honestly.
SPEAKER_00Like it felt like that. It's like everyone was like, we kept passing it backwards to like reassess and then like and it and it just I don't know. It was it. I will say there's glimpses of how we came into the second half that looked more like what we needed the full game. Uh, but overall, yeah, I fully agree. Like it just, I don't know. We just looked like we were shook. Um which was very bizarre.
SPEAKER_02And I mean that's like the that mental part of it is what seemed like like it it was fixed. And we have we have Pachatino, who is like far and away the most accomplished coach that we've ever had in in the men's team. And it's like so much of his coaching philosophy and all the stuff that he's talking about is is the mental and getting everybody prepared to play the game. For them to be just wholly unprepared to a man. Like that's where uh Malik Tillman had had a good game. Uh Balogun, when he got to, kind of had a good game, but he he made some some misplays on on some of the balls that he did too. But it's just hard because he was I think they even said on the broadcast, he was the player that had the least amount of touches in the first half. So he was like basically non-existent.
SPEAKER_01It's hard to get that was always trying to pass the ball off and you know, instead of just like you were saying, instead of just taking space and instead of taking shots and doing what he needs to do, he was trying to pass it off to someone else and it would always get intercepted or it was a bad pass.
SPEAKER_02And like I think it's Malik Tillman had a good game. The other the other ten players on the field were were awful. Like two a man, everybody was terrible, which is baffling to me.
SPEAKER_01And that's why I think that it it's it's worth mentioning the transitive property of like, oh, Paraguay, you know, basically gave you know they gave France a run for their money, they lost by you know one goal, and we dominated Paraguay. So that puts us in the same class that we should be able to. But at the end of the day, when it comes time for the US to play in those matches, it doesn't, you know, whatever whatever the disconnect is, it just looks completely different. And especially when just like you said, like this year we had you know world-class coach making what six million dollars a year uh or something like that. And you know, it was a home world cup on our turf. You're playing behind, you're playing in front of your home crowd every single game. And yeah, you know, we made we made some noise having three wins and the highest goal differential and most goals scored and all that, but we still have not gotten further than we've ever gotten before in the past. And this is even with an expanded field up to 48 teams, and you know, should all these teams have been in it? And you know, is it lesser competition that's in there now, all these uh sort of things? But um, yeah, it's just it it just seems like until and and like it's sad because it'd be because just like you were saying, Srav, right? Like we just need a little bit. Like, once you I like when the World Cup is here and you watch a little bit in these, you know, every four years, it people people buy into it. They're like, I kind of get it. Like, yeah, like it, you know, if you just look at a sheet of paper and like, oh, it was one-nothing, that must be a super boring game. You're like, yeah, like I get it. But if you really watch it and you watch just like the tide as the attack comes on and the crowd swells with it, and they're just missing opportunities, and a keeper gets a hand. Like, you can see how like I get why this is an exciting sport to watch. We just need a little bit to hang on to, and just like every time we get a little bit, oh wow, there's a lot of momentum. Okay, cool. Bel Belgium, this is a big team, like maybe we can give them a run for their money. It's like, oh no, like, and it's not even like we look like like they just beat us hands. Like, we look bad, and it's like embarrassing.
SPEAKER_02And and that's the thing, is that like I like we uh all credit to Belgium, but the the US lost that game. Yeah. Like more than Belgium won it, the US lost that game by just making stupid mistakes, by not being being up and ready for it, and not not going after it. And I that's the that's that's the part that's disappointing to me. It's not because it's not because it was the same old story, because it it was differ the way that this team was and the way that the way that it should have been. The outcome is the same and that we ended up losing to it, but it it's not that we went up against these heavyweights that that played us off the field. It's that we we played ourselves off the field. We did not we did not show up in any sense in any any portion of the game.
SPEAKER_00And I think and I think the other piece of evidence in support of that is I don't think I've ever experienced this much goodwill get eviscerated all the way back into negative, where like I woke up today and I was like, it was borderline like Mandela effect. Like I went online and the way that we seemed to just despise this team that we were like hopeful around and like excited for for a few weeks before, and we're like, I don't know, we might get a shot, like whatever. And today it's like ballistic, you a dumbass bitch. And I'm just like, holy shit, like, and it's not just like you, it's not reactive either. It's not like, oh, this game happened, now I hate you. It's like a we're now like, no, you've always been stupid, actually. And it would and I'm just like, this is so fascinating. The genuine like embarrassment and frustration and anger that is being leveled at this team, as opposed to, you know, like other like other teams lose, but it's like, hey, you guys tried your best, it was great. Like, we are not giving them that hero's kind of uh return or anything. It's just like fuck you guys. And then also there's the political element of it which is like completely, you know, distorted the whole thing too, and everyone's like, what a poetic way for us to um I don't know, like bow out, bow out after, you know, all that all that controversy. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it just uh you know it feels like it's it's getting the rug pulled out from under you. It's like, oh, we've been in embarrassment before. This time it feels different. This feels like a different team, and then it's like, oh, we're still the same shit. Like okay, we're just we're still kind of embarrassing when we get on the big stage.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And I think and I think as and and that's and I think that maybe that's where the anger comes from. It's because we've we've spent so long watching in all of the previous World Cups, essentially all the World Cups, uh, minus maybe the 2022, um, with these teams that are full of MLS guys who can't string a pass together, who who can't one touch a ball in and take it in. And and it's like like the expectations were lower for those guys because we knew what they what they were. They were these like they didn't have the same talent level. This team was supposed to be different, and they were. They showed that they could be different because they they do have that talent level. They can they can play that way, they can have have fluid soccer where they're linking up and they're making the runs behind and they're getting the balls in and they're looking dangerous, and it's fun to watch. And then it was kind of like like the whatever team showed up, the monsters came and and took their their skills, and it was an MLS team again. That's what it looked like. It looked like we were watching a bunch of MLS players on the field, and not these players who are playing in the biggest teams in Europe, who have been playing in champions leagues, who were scoring against PSG and and taking on these Titans, which which they like and that's the big difference now, is we have that quality. We didn't have an MLS player on the pitch outside of Tim Reen, who's 38 years old and has retired there, but he spent his entire his entire career playing in in the Premier League. Like these are these were are the players of quality, and they didn't show it, and it looked like what we had seen for the past however many World Cups now. Um which is like the the shocking part and probably why everybody flipped on to say, you know you you weren't you weren't who we thought you were.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'll say this as I've been watching more and more, you know, and starting to I like I I I don't think I've missed highlights from a single game, at least from the round of uh the round of uh 16, right? Or is that next? No, no. No, no, this is just around the round of 16. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Uh but also I've been very much like whether it's my algorithm or what, fully sucked into the Holland. Yeah, like I know, and I get like I'm not alone in this. I think like he's just very like the exact kind of personality that is like just internet, like, you know, fucking uh what is it? Terminator. Yeah, no, not even Terminator, uh catnip. It's internet catnip. Like he is funny in like a very specific weird way. He's goofy, he's acts really strange, but he's also like a beast and a demon out there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like he's a monster.
SPEAKER_00He's huge, he's fast, he's he's good. So part of me was watching the US game being like, all right, this isn't looking good, but honestly, clears the way for me to root for Norway because I think I think that is that is who I'm gunning for now.
SPEAKER_02That Norway England match is gonna be awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Holland. I love I love the Vikings, I love the rowing. That shit is fucking amazing. I'm fully they've won me over. Not just the team or Holland specifically. I mean like the fandom, the way they've like made m like just things so memorable with how they've come into the States and stuff. Like it's it's incredible. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and USA's out of it, so you know, lose a little bit of luster on that aspect, but the rest of the World Cup has delivered tenfold. Uh, you know, it's always good when you have when the stars show out on the biggest stage, you know, when the top people, when Messi's scoring every game, when Holland is, you know, this is his first World Cup and he's you know putting his stamp on it right away. Mbappe's keeping, you know, keeping up the momentum from last World Cup. Like, you know, when when when you have those top guys that are showing out, uh it makes it really exciting. And obviously the games have been great. Almost, you know, every game is is down to the wire, uh, is in like extra time or kicks at the end. Argentina has nine lives in this tournament. I don't know how they're doing it, but uh, you know, against uh Cape Verde and now Egypt today. So yeah, the rest of the World Cup has been exciting. Hopefully it continues to be so because there's a lot of good games coming up, but that'll be awesome. Um all right, let's uh let's mosey on into what's good. Who's got one?
SPEAKER_00I guess you know, uh, this is gonna be a Brendan, a c a classic Brendan style what's good. Sweet. So it's good, it's gonna be really terrible until the end. Yeah, pretty much. Um stay with me here. Or not that I need to encourage people to, it's just it's a little bit of a story. I want to try to figure out how to make it as succinct as I can. Uh July 4th, a lot of fun. You know, we had a day. Um I left a party at like 1 a.m. got back to my place, um, was just kind of like, you know, settling in, like looking in my phone and not ready, not totally like I'm I'm just it takes me a little bit, even no matter how late it is. Like, I have like a little window of like needing to settle in before I can fall asleep. I'm not good at just like it's late, I'm gonna get home and just pass out right away. So I get like I end up falling asleep at like 2-2-ish. And uh I wake up to phone calls uh from my uh uncle uh and aunt, and I'm just like, you know, I'm so out of it. I'm like, what's going on? And I don't know what time it is. I'm like, have I slept for eight hours? Have I slept for nothing? It turns out it's it's about 4 a.m. And they're calling me. I miss the first call. I get the they call again and I'm like, okay, feels like something's going on. And I pick up the second call, and the whole thing in turns, so they basically are like, hey, so um I have a cousin, not like directly like a cousin, it's like I've I've met him and spent time with him, like but like he's my aunt's sister's son. So it's like we didn't grow up together in like a like as if we're complete like you know, family in that way, but he appeared in our lives, I think, later when they moved to the States, and then we've kind of been in a group chat together, and like I've seen him kind of grow up, not in like a all the time way, but like a handful of times in our lives we've gotten to spend time together. So again, it's not like I know he's not a stranger, but he's also not like my cousin. So I just want to I want to just contextualize that. So my uncle's like, yeah, so he was celebrating his 21st, didn't tell anyone, and did like a trip with his friends to New York City um to do his 21st and like you know, party with his like friends out there, and I was like, Okay, I don't like where this is going. And it's like, yeah, so we we got we heard from like uh some friends of his basically uh that they had to take him to the ER because he like drank a ton, like wasn't responsive, uh, and whatever. And so I could tell like in that moment I was like, oh, I know what's what's going on here. And my uncle was like, not even go rescue him, it's just like you gotta there just need to be an adult there. Um, and so you know, I'm like, I'm I'm almost thankful that it was after like under two hours since I had fallen asleep, because I think it's such a weird amount of sleep that the adrenaline will just like send you right away. Like you don't have that feeling of like, oh god, I gotta drag myself out of bed. Like I was into action, like within 20 minutes of that call, I was in an Uber, you know, on my way to this hospital. Um and suffice to say everything was fine. His friends were kind of just being taking like they're playing it safe, right? They they it's not like it didn't sound like he was like unconscious and like on the verge of whatever. They just were like, hey, you just started to feel like he wasn't responsive. We weren't really sure how much he had maybe drank, and so we just wanted to be safe, so we brought him here. Again, we've had another friend who had to deal with this, so we kind of know the process, so that's why we did it. So I was like, I I support that. Very happy that, like, you know, take the precaution rather than the risk, especially stuff like this. Um, so I was there for like a little bit, and it's fine, you know. They basically were like, Yeah, he just needs to sleep it off when he when he wake when he woke up is when they were they're basically gonna let him wake up whenever he woke up and then like do one last check and then release him, uh, which is exactly what happened. All fine, all good. Um, you know, my uncle did come into the city with my aunt. They were already gonna be here, I guess, for like a show. They just came in earlier and then like made him take a picture with my aunt outside the hospital, which was, I'm sure, really fucking embarrassing for him. Like, you know, uh, where he's like smiling, and I'm like, that sucks, dude. Like one moment, one moment you're partying, celebrating your 21st. The next you wake up in the hospital, you don't know how you got there, and your aunt is outside, like ready to like roast you for you know getting in. This situation. Um you're probably really hungover too, unless unless they hit him with some IV. I'm sure they probably hit him with some fluids or something to help out. Yeah, again, my role ended up purely just being like adult stamp of approval. Like I called my uncle once I talked to the people there, and he conferenced in this kid's dad, and I could tell that the dad was just worried, wasn't sure. Like New York is such a like crazy concept to people who like don't live here, but also when you're culturally from a different place, like you're just like, I don't know what happened there, right? Like it's hard for like it's easy for thoughts of like, was it drugs too? Was it this, that? And it's like, no, no, no, it's fine. You don't you have a smart kid, you just partied a little too hard. Um, the reason I build all this up to the what's good, I like could not have been more impressed with his friends. I talked to them for like an hour and a half, they were pretty, they were like sober, really smart, really like responsible, and they were just like absolute bros who were like there for him, no matter what, like which is interesting, right? I'm meeting strangers virtually at this little like sad, depressing cafe outside of an ER. And like I'm just like, oh, this kid's in good hands. Nice. And I was just kind of like, man, that is really it's nice to see. I think like we've at least had the privilege. We might forget it at times that we have like such good friends, and like our friends, we have like, you know, we have like these almost like familial friendships, at least between us, where like we're we're there for each other, we would show up for shit like that if things go down or whatever. And I was just like, man, it's so like it makes me so happy to see other people find what feels like that. I could be, you know, glamorizing it too much. Maybe they're just gonna be bros through college and then go their separate ways. But in that moment, I was like, man, that's fucking cool. Like, they're here, they their hotel is a few blocks away, but they're like, fuck it, we're just gonna eat Doritos and chill in this waiting room in case he wakes up because like we want to be here so that we can help, like, take him, whatever. And I was like, damn, dude, like some fucking boys. Like, I was like, that's that's really nice uh to see. And I was just like, yeah, like I really it selfishly, the best thing about it was it put me at ease right away where I was like, I'm gonna get to go home soon. Like, yeah, like I'm gonna go back to bed soon. Yeah, just because I know that I can actually trust these in good hands, he's with people these guys who care about him. And I was like, man, it is like friendship is a beautiful thing, uh, in all its different stages and wacky places, and when you're coming of age, especially you're turning 21, like it was just very cool um to just see that and be like, wow, you know, I'm glad I was here. I'm glad I was able to be the person that put my uncle and like our other relatives, like give them peace of mind that things were fine. Uh, but it was nice to be like, man, I didn't need to be here. Like these guys had it. So that's fine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's really cool that I don't know if he knew about this beforehand or whatever, but that like, you know, you're 21st. It can get sideways pretty quick, you know, it's your first time going, you know, like, but it should be about you going out and having the best time that you possibly can. And that's such a cool thing to know that you can do that, kind of lose yourself for a little bit and know that and know that you're still gonna be kept in check by the people around you because they're looking out for you, and they don't want you to look like an idiot, they don't want you to do something that's gonna be dangerous, that's gonna affect the rest of your life, you know. That you have people there that are to put up like the guardrails if you need to, you know.
SPEAKER_00Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, man. That's cool. Man, you were talking about how the about how they basically just said that he just had to like sleep it off and that he'd be okay. And it it it just reminded me there there was a night back in college that uh that Brandon and I had with one of our roommates where he drank a lot to the point that we were that we were looking at, we were like, holy shit, he might die. Like we need to get him medical attention like quickly, like he needs to get his stomach pump. Like, this is beyond anything we've ever seen. That he was homatose, you know. So we called up our EMS, the uh the campus EMS, and uh they were you know, I'm trying to remember what exactly they said, but it was essentially like, is he breathing? We're like, well, yeah. You're like, okay, he'll be alright. We're like, yeah, we're like, what? Like, you don't care at all about his symptoms so much less concerned. Yeah, they just did not care at all. We were like, holy shit, is he about to die in our apartment tonight? Like, this is really bad. Like, we gotta get him, you know, because like especially when you're in college, like for you to actually get medical assistance for someone, like it has to be really serious. Cause like you don't know who's gonna get in trouble for what. Like, there's gonna be questions asked, like, all this stuff is running through your mind. And the fact that they were just like, did not care at all. It's like, wow, okay. I guess it were, you know, I don't know what it would look like for you guys to really be worried, you know, for him to just not be breathing already. He's already, you know, coding out. Is it too late then?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what they needed. So it's just funny that he was in the EMT or that he was in the emergency room, and they were just like, eh, let's let him sleep it off. He'll be all right.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I do think I do think they gave him stuff, but I agree. Yeah, like it was like I could tell that the nurse's vibe was like, yeah, like we'll we'll take care of this, but like it's it's fine. Like there's nothing serious here. I don't think it was like a uh at least I don't know that it was like uh had to get a stomach pump kind of thing. I feel like that would be more serious and we would talk about it. Yeah, um but there's no indication that anything like that happened. I think they like I think they gave them like oxygen just because. Um otherwise, like yeah, you just needed to end up like sleeping off. Um so yeah. It was uh it was a f I I will say, very tired Sunday, but at least you know, sometimes you're like at least this is interesting. I like it when life keeps things interesting. Hell yeah. Yeah, like I like when life keeps things interesting and nothing bad actually happens. I have to add that part. I don't want to be surprised. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I feel like we've talked about this since we were, you know, youngins, but uh you know, life is about stories, right? Having stories to tell, experiences that you've had, things that you've done. It'd be very boring if you just didn't ever have anything happen or anything to add to conversations or your own experiences or anecdotes. So as long as everything's safe, it's always cool when things happen and it's exciting for a little bit. That's cool, man. Um I'll uh I'll go I'll go my what's good. Mine's just a short one. Uh every once in a while I have a thing with a with a kid uh that pops up that's a good one. So uh three kids, our youngest one has had some attachment. Um I w I don't I hesitate to call them issues, but she's been very attached to her mother. As I think I mentioned before that you know, that she always has uh has Megan put her down for every nap and evening, and she's very attached to her, and that's her safe spot. So unless Sarab's there. Unless Sarab's there. Unless Sarav's there. Yeah, it's really not an attachment to mom, it's just a not attachment to dad. That's just what it is. It's just whatever, whoever's not him, that's who I'm gonna go to. Uh, but so she has been doing gymnastics. We've been really proud of her. She Megan being a gymnast, she's very hopeful that one of our kids can get into gymnastics. Um, and it seems like Lenny at least has the athletic ability and coordination to at least make it something that she could pursue if she wanted to. So um, up until so the year plus leading up to this, she was in a parent-facilitated gymnastics class where the parent is out there with them, helping them just keep them in line. Because at that age group, they it can get off the rails uh, you know, with them not listening or going and doing their own thing. Our daughter, she's never had any issues with that, really great at listening, paying attention, does what she has to. It's come very naturally to her. So they recommended she move up to the next class, where she's one of the youngest ones in the class, but it's now obviously no more a parent-facilitated class. Just the the kid just goes out there and they join the class. And uh so this was her third week doing it. The first two weeks was rough. She did not want to leave uh mom to go out there. She eventually did after the warm because like the first time she went out there and then they had to do like a crab walk, and she felt like she couldn't do it, and that kind of like freaked her out, so then she ran out and uh took a while to get her back out there. Same thing with last week. Uh you know, the classes started and called everyone in, and she did not want to go out there. Um, so it it's a little bit of embarrassment from like our perspective, from like the parents' perspective, because then you have this child that you know is kind of you know is cause causing a little bit of a scene and she's crying and she's upset, and it's you know, you're trying to find the right words to say and stay calm and like what's going to motivate her to get out there. So we've been trying different things. So this past week, yesterday, uh Megan was like, hey, why don't why don't you just take her? Just you and her go there and we'll see what happens. And so when out there, she really likes she loves the song Thunderstruck by ACDC. Like that is her jam. So she knows, like, when she's in mom's car, they're listening to kids' songs and story time, things like that. I don't do that in my car. So Lenny knows that when it's a dad's car, it's time to pump the classic rock. So she always asks for thunderstruck. And so I just thought I was like, hey, I'm just not even gonna mention it all. Like before then, um, you know, Megan's been like pumping her up, being like, hey, okay, you know, you're going to gymnastics, you're gonna do awesome, you're gonna go out for the whole warm-up, like trying to do all like the positive uh reinforcement for it. Unfortunately, that hasn't really been working. So I'm like, okay, this time I'm just not gonna say anything. Went out there, got to gymnastics. It was time for them to go out there, and uh, and she went right out, right from the very beginning, didn't have any issues with it, did the whole class, it was awesome. Uh, and then I was like, I was like, oh man, that's really awesome. I'm so proud of her. I'm like, hold up. It's just because she didn't want to be with me. It was like, okay, cool, I get to get away from dad. Awesome. Mom's not here, so whatever. This isn't a big deal anymore. I was like, man, that's what it is. She just she just was cool just getting away from me. But uh, I say that prestigiously. I know that she enjoys being around me and we have a good time, but the attachment is definitely to uh to the uh to her mom. Um so we'll see what happens next week if she's finally over the hump. But you know, but the cool thing is that she went out there, she did it, she had no issues the whole class, and then her excitement and joy in telling uh everyone, telling the whole family when she got back home, you know, telling her grandmother when she calls, you know, she's really excited about it. Um so hopefully she's a little bit over that uh over that hump. But it was good to see that that she got over that that she got over that that fear at least for one week uh when I took her. So that's my uh that's my that's my what's good from this.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_02Brandon, how about you, man? My what's good for this week. Um the Fourth of July holiday was awesome because we had I had Thursday and Friday off, so I had like a four-day weekend, which was really nice. And um my parents had the week off because my dad always takes like the week of his birthday off from a vacation. Um the older boys went to stay with my parents, but they wanted to it was it was a hundred degrees, and like they were like, What can we do with these kids to get them like out of the house? Because she had my um my older brother's two oldest girls who are the same age as as Teddy and James there as well. So they got to like hang out with the cousins, but my mom was like, I can't just keep everybody here. Let's find something to do. We ended up going to she went to this, she had this idea to go to this museum um that they opened up in like around Rowan in South Jersey, which is like right by them, Rowan University. It's a fossil and dinosaur a fossil park and museum. Which I I had no idea that this was even there, but apparently there's like a a whole bunch of prehistoric fossils like right in our backyard in in South Jersey. Uh and they built this like yeah, and just last yeah it opened up last year and they have this like big fossil. It's cool, it's a fossil park. So you can actually go out and do a dig where it's like a big rock quarry, and you can go down there and dig and see if you find any fossils and get them. It was closed because it was it was a hundred degrees, so we didn't get to do that. Um, but I took George um since I was off and just sent Millie to to daycare, and all all the boys went with my parents and and their cousins to go to this museum, um, which they have a whole bunch of fossils and like big dinosaur exhibits telling you all about dinosaurs and stuff. And it was like it's like this it's in like this podunk South Jersey place. I was like, all right, yeah, cool. There's like some teeth. I had very low expectations on like what this thing actually was going into it, um, but was super impressed with like the amount of like production and money that they like poured into it to like make it, it's like a legitimately like nice museum uh with all kinds of fossils and and dinosaur stuff. And there's like there's this big thing, the um it's called the Mosasaur, uh, which is like basically I don't know if you saw Jurassic World, I think the second Jurassic World, but it has like the the aquatic dinosaur that they made or whatever that was in it. I don't know, it's like the scene where it like comes up and bites something. It's it they had made a hybrid, but it's essentially that. It was like this big swimming lizard, not even technically a dinosaur, but it was like the biggest the biggest creature of the seas in prehistoric times, and like it was discovered like at that at that uh site like right there in South Power. Oh, that's awesome. They had a whole bunch of stuff around that though that we got to see, and and the kids loved it. In the dinosaur exhibits, they have like all these like like screens all around, and you and all the kids get a card, and there's a scavenger hunt. Like you go, you tap in, and it it like brings up a whole bunch of fossils, and you have to go to the exhibit and scan it, and then go back and scan it back and say that you found it, and like you go around to see if you can get all of them. Kids absolutely loved it. Like they were they were running around going to everything, um, and were trying to trying to complete all the fossils. Um so really good activity for them. George, they they had an extinction exhibit where they had like a um they they had a a video that was basically like a rendering of like like what happened when the comet hit and like what like goes through everything, which I I think is like intended is like like more like for older older kids to be looking. George loved that shit. He sat down and watched that video on loop for like at least eight times. And then we and then we get home and he's playing with his dinosaurs and they're all knocked down on the ground. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Bad, take it out. This is cover everything dies.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, they're all they're all just about to die right now. All right. It's like oh buddy, what happened to your dinosaurs? He's like, Oh, their legs got cut off. It's like, oh my god. All right. So I mean you learned something, but yeah, uh, but he he had a he had a really good time. And George's George's birthday is on the fourth. Um, so that was like just part of his overall birthday weekend where we did that. We went to go see Toy Story, we got to go out and play some tennis. Um he got he loves baseball and he hasn't been able to play with like the actual aluminum bats because he has he doesn't have a helmet. He got a helmet that fits him for his birthday, so we had to go up there immediately, even though it was a hundred degrees and hit some hard balls. So Teddy's bat's way too big for him to swing. He has he has like a little T-ball bat that we have for him. And Teddy's helmet's way too big for him, it falls down over his eyes. Uh okay. So he's a big thing. Wait, what did you think of uh Toy Story? So I have conflicting feelings about Toy Story. I it wasn't as like it was it was a totally fine movie. I thought it I thought it was fine. I don't understand why Woody was there. He he did basically nothing, and then he left at the end. Like, I don't know, like was he back? Was he not? Like I feel like that was all unless I missed it.
SPEAKER_01I misunderstand the whole Buzz Lightyear side plot with all of that. Yeah, all the Buzz. I mean, I I think I was just this isn't really adding anything to it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I think it was just to have like the drone thing come through. But yeah, like that didn't really make sense. Whole like Jesse's voice, I'm glad you prepped me for it because that really threw me. And it's like jarring, it's like she's the one who's changed the most. The whole movie's about her. So she's like talking the most out of all of the characters, uh, which is just like so that part was was a little off-putting. But uh like the story around Jesse and like the the way that like you found out that her Emily or whatever her kid's name was, named her daughter after Jesse and that they matter, poignant stuff hits you in the field. Sure. I thought all of that was very well done, which is is is stupid because I'm like saying that like the actual like like like good movie part of it was good story, but like for like the kid movie part of it, kind of like uh I'm I'm used to all of the other characters having like these big roles and like having a big part of the movie, and I feel like there was like nothing for any of the other characters to do. Like there's this whole Forky got married to some I don't even know what her name was, Beth Ann or something like that. But like that was it. I was just kind of like thrown in there as this like side thing, which is like, okay, like what why is this like most of the characters I threw in there was just so that you could say that you saw them in the movie and they didn't add anything to it. Whereas I feel like all of the other four Toy Stories, like it was a well-rounded cast. Like you had a cast of characters and they all contributed to it. And this one, I felt like you if you removed everybody except for Jesse man, Jesse and Bullseye? I don't even I don't even know if you if you really needed Buzz or Woody or any of those other kids. I think if you just had Jesse and Bullseye, it would be the same movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it seemed like it seemed like the Leapfrog.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. The the new ones. Um so like like the Leapfrog and the Smarty Pants or whatever the potty thing was, and like those ones.
SPEAKER_01Did you guys know what that was? Is that like a real thing? I I would assume it is, because it made a lot of references that I would assume that it was a legitimate thing. Maybe it's not. Maybe I just assumed it was and it just never and I just never passed a bit.
SPEAKER_00I I I assumed it's probably like it's based on some real thing. Yeah. Um that maybe no longer exists.
SPEAKER_02But but I feel like if there's something like that, it's probably not on the pond or whatever, this like kid version of the internet that's on there, which which I mean I I appreciate that that's like serving for the story in a kid's movie, like, yeah, you need a uh McGuffin thing like that. Um but yeah, it's like they kind of yada yada her getting bullied by her by her friends. Yeah, they're those shitty ass friends. A shitty thing to do. Yeah, it's just I don't know, it's it's it it was it was a weird movie for me that I thought was like the kids loved it and and thought it was cool. Like I asked them what their favorite part was, and they like they liked when all the buzzes were there going star command and all this stuff. So it's like okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. That's no, it's interesting. A lot of stuff you're mentioning, I realized like I didn't even think about, but it was probably why the movie had so much of it that felt a little hollow compared to like so many other story movies. Uh and even as you're saying it, I was like, man, you know what? I I miss Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. Yeah. They weren't even in the movie. No, wow. Yeah, you're right.
SPEAKER_02Like him and like like there were all of these like characters who who were there, like physically, you could see them in some of the scenes, but they did absolutely nothing except maybe said like a throwaway line. I think there's like Slinky Dog went to to go do get something and like had like a line. And I'm like, man, did they really bring all these voice actors in to like say one thing? Like Duke Kaboon was there. I yeah, like Keanu Reeves's Duke Kaboon was awesome in the four Toy Story. Brandon, spoiler alert, you should say it's because it is really good. But that was one that I thought they did well because like the new characters that they added, they there was a lot of personality, they contributed to the overall like story, and they had the the OG cast was like a part of it with them.
SPEAKER_00I just feel like that part didn't come through at all for maybe it's like maybe they're just dealing with like the Marvel problem, they just have an ever-expanding cast of characters, and they're trying too hard to squeeze everyone in, but also make room for completely new characters, and so it ends up being a thing that never gives people who want the main thing what they're looking for, but at the same time, you know. I don't know. Can you guys hear my washing machine? That's hilarious. I have multiple devices in this apartment that have like Japanese style sing-song-y tunes when they finish their process. I don't know why they chose that. I don't mind though, it's a nice little bit of whimsy. Um, but yeah, no, it's just it's so interesting that like yeah, and at the same time telling the movie was very successful.
SPEAKER_01They need an extinction event to wipe out a lot of those old casts to start fresh. And George would be an incinerator. Yeah, George would be in the George's air.
SPEAKER_02Wait, drop that in incinerator, dude. You haven't seen Toy Story 3. You need to see Toy Story 3.
SPEAKER_01You gotta see Toy Story 3, man. Yeah, I'm not equipped to have this conversation yet.
SPEAKER_02So so so the the movie was was fine. Um I think that the way that it talked about like imaginative play and like like uh the um like devices and connected, I thought that was really well done. Um and like the they were talking about like uh I think it was Jesse who was saying, Don't you play? And like, oh yeah, like we she plays turtle tag or whatever. It's like no, that's like you're that's a game. Like I mean play. And then like went into like the whole um using them as other things and like building a story around it. Like, I really appreciated that. I thought that was a a great message to have for like that that I would want shown to my kids. And you know, we're really fortunate that our kids are kind of naturally that way where they just go and like that's how they play. They prefer to play toys than um than a switch or or anything else that they're doing. That was cool to have reinforced and then I thought they liked. Um so uh there there are parts of it that I I really enjoyed, but as like a toy story movie, I'd say it's probably probably my least favorite.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01Fair though. Um, yeah, alright. Yes. Uh I I'll just bring up so I had my Fourth of July weekend uh as well that we always look forward to. I talked about it a bunch on here, a bunch of cool things. Uh and my aunt and uncle go above and beyond. They do, I think I mentioned here that they would do a scavenger hunt every year for them, and then my uncle puts a ton of effort into it, uh, which is really appreciated, where he has clues for everyone, and the clues are are geared toward the level of each child, and they kind of like alternate throughout. This one he went even further. I mean, he's going he's working himself into a corner here where he's going so big with them, where this time he had like that they were each pirates, and I was the captain, and Megan was a voodoo princess, and my sister was some priestess or something else, like, and he had costumes for everyone, and he was like making everyone their pirate personas. Um, and uh yeah, like and so he went way above and beyond. Uh the funniest thing was that he had uh for one of them, they had to decode a clue, so they had a decode her, and then it had like a scrambled message that they had to decode, so then uh Megan, as like the voodoo priestess, was the one to decode it. So then she had like the legend and she had to do it, and like you know, a normal person it would be like, hey, two or three words, like you're good. No, no, no. It was like a paragraph that she was sitting there, she had so much pressure on her, she was trying to decode it correctly. Like the game skidded to a stop for like half an hour as she's trying to figure it out. Like he went a little bit deep on that, but uh, but really, you know, obviously the kids really enjoy it. They love well, Lenny, we lost her really quickly because once it came to the decoder, she was like, This is uh I'm not about this, I don't know what's going on anymore.
SPEAKER_02Um your uncle's basically like a dungeon master for yeah, that's what it's gonna become. It's hilarious.
SPEAKER_01And so now as the kids get older and smarter, he's gonna have to up his game for that. And since and as everyone gets progressively more elaborate, he has to keep up in game every single time. So the expectations are there now. Um but uh but yeah, so a lot of good stuff, beach time. Uh my favorite thing is always walking along. They have this, I don't know if I mentioned it here, but they have this strip of insane mansions right on the water. Um, and so my favorite thing to do is that we go out and we start walking at like 7, 7.30 p.m. on July 4th, and we just walk along this and there's all the parties going on, and people are out and about. And it's just it's it's just a really like alive time, you know, everything's really vibrant. There's so many people, there's just this energy that's on the street. Um, and then we always just stop in this one little like street, and because these people are so affluent, they like there's the big fireworks show that's uh down by like Point Pleasant, but then these people have like their own fireworks shows and they spend tens of thousands of dollars. Like they are legit firework shows that they just that they just light up on the beach, and so all along this beach front you see a whole bunch of different firework shows going off. So we so we always stop in this one street or what what we've done for the past couple years is that there's this one little like inlet with like a beach access, little like stairway and and like ramp, and it has this bench there. We just sit on the bench and they're letting off and the two houses right on either side of it have their own. So like the fireworks are going over your head. Uh, and you're you're you are right there in it, and it's really cool. So um that's always really good. Although I will say that I I had to make a bold claim because there's something that we always do there, and it's and it's I think it's it's it's very popular, a lot of people like it, and I think that there is a special place in hell for for this uh for this event, and it is going to the boardwalk amusement park or where the boardwalk rides are. And I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I keep telling Megan every year, I'm like, it is impossible for me to be in a good mood here. And that sounds very counterintuitive because it's oh, you're on rides, you're on the boardwalk, the beach is there, it's all great. I absolutely despise it for many reasons. Number one, first of all, I hate the heat. This is just this is this is just a me personal thing. I sweat very easily. And when you're and when you're at the boardwalk by these rides, there's no shade anywhere. No shade. You're just in the direct sun, everything's hot, there's no fans or anything, there's no overhangs for you to get under. You are just out baking in the sun, waiting, you know, at each of these rides. Um, so that I think is terrible. The worst thing about it is that it just seems evil. It seems evil. And I'll just describe it because we spent like we started out, we put in, you know, we uh we uh we we put in fifty dollars, and in that fifty dollars we got fifty-five tickets back, right? So as all these movements park dues and uh uh do and carnivals, they do things by tickets. So it doesn't, it's not like you're spending real money, oh it's just tickets, like it's not a big deal. And then, but then so then you go to ride on the rides, and the way that they do it at the at at these boardwalk places is that they have the most insane height requirements that make absolutely no sense. And so for my kids who can you know do all these water slides and you know they can go to Disney World and ride pretty much every ride at Disney World by the, you know, it's not a big deal, but then you go to this boardwalk and to ride like a teacup ride that goes around, they have to be like 50 inches to ride on their own. And so if they're under that, then you have to ride within with an adult. So now for my two kids and me to ride it, it's eight tickets each. So we spend fifty dollars to get fifty-five tickets. I spent just under half of that, so the three of us can ride one. It was sorry, it was the um it was the Himalaya ride. You know, the one that's uh it's you it's usually called the Himalaya, it's just like on like the big track and it plays music and it goes forward and backwards. Sure. And yeah, um I remember you telling us about this. So so essentially, you know, twenty dollars for us for us three to ride this ride. And then there are other rides that it's just like a two seat, because like in that one we could all be in the same row, but there are other rides that it's just two people per like, you know, section, whatever. So then neither kid can ride on their own. So, but I can't go on with my two kids and just like one of them sit behind us or whatever. No, no, no. They have to be with a tall enough adult in order to ride with it. So I have to ride with one of my children, use 16 tickets, and then get off, and then I have to ride with my other child another 16 tickets. So we have to spend 32 tickets for us for both kids to just ride the ride once. And I just think it's so prepared. That's it, and that's it. And then and then you're done. And it's like, okay, cool. That was that was the whole time at the boardwalk. And I just think it's like terrible because then now you have to because like the kids are there to have fun. You don't want to have a financial discussion with your children that hey, your enjoyment has to be limited because we can't spend hundreds of dollars to ride, and like the rides are fine, you know, they're at best, they're just they're okay. We're kids, it doesn't really matter, right? Rides are rides, they're gonna have fun, and it's all about the enjoyment and all that sort of stuff. But like it's a tough thing to be like, hey, sorry, like we we you know, do you really want to go on that ride? Because if you go on that ride, that's nine tickets, and we only have three left, or do you want to go on the you know, it's like, man, that's not the conversation that I want to be having with my kids as we're here to like have fun. We got very lucky in that there were people leaving that had bought like unlimited bands for a certain amount of time, and they're like, hey, we're not supposed to do this, but we're leaving. There's still like an hour left on them. We can shimmy them off, and your kids can use them. So we got very lucky that two of them that we got two like arm bands uh with unlimited. But um that's clutch. That's awesome. Yeah, so that saved us. Uh yeah, but like I can never be in a happy mood because I'm like, man, we rode two rides, that was fifty dollars. So now like we're still here. Are we just gonna leave? No, like you just you're forced to keep putting money into it. Um sucks. Yeah, dude. It whenever I'm at those things, I I'm like, Megan, I can't I can't be here for this. Like it just it just puts me in a bad mood thinking about it. The one, uh, I don't know if it's a silver lining or not, but uh luckily our uncle was like, hey, at the end of it, you guys have to do like the water squirter game. That's tradition, you gotta do it where you gotta hit the target, have it all go up and get a prize at the end of it. Um and like, you know, we try to do it. We're like, we're the where like we fill it out. It's like the five of us there, each of us has our own, so that like one of us is gonna win and get something from it. It causes problems because we have three kids, and one prize between three kids makes it kind of difficult. But then they were like, hey, you know, it with four people you can get one large one. If you do five, you can do two mediums. We're like, okay, cool, we'll do two mediums and and we'll uh and we'll spread this out. So then we eventually got it, um, and and I wind up winning because I'm money at those things, just locked in right from the start. Kids don't even stand a chance against me, they'll have to earn that one day. Of course. But so uh do you guys know do you guys know about bow buns? Yeah. Like about that. Not the food.
SPEAKER_00What are you saying? Not the food. No, I only know the food.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So a couple years ago, I don't know, for like Christmas or something, we got one of these little um bow bun things, and it comes in a little like dumpling container, and it's this little, it's this little squishy, and it is oddly satisfying. It has this like special material inside of it, and it's very like pliable and bendy, but it looks like a little, you know, bow bun, right? And it's just little squishy. Then over like the next year, it it became, I mean, it probably was, and we just didn't know about it, but it became this huge thing. Like these bao buns are everywhere, and they have different colors of them, and all these uh sorts of things, and then there's this other thing called a Nido. If you guys are you guys familiar with that, I mean Sarah, I know this is like way out of your depth right now, but they have this Nido that's another little like squishy little toy thing. We went to this toy store one time and uh Luke was about to get a bao bun that he was looking at because he was using his own money, but then these kids were really like entering the store. There were these 10-year-olds outside, they're like, they have that, they have nidos in there. We're like, okay, whatever. And looks like nido's, like, that's cool. And then we got in there and they had this display behind the counter. And the amount of people that were losing their mind over these nidos. There were people on phone calls being like, they have nidos here, they have them here. Which ones do you want? How many do you want me to get for you? Everyone that went up to the counter got these nidos behind it. Um, so Luke wound up getting one because he was like, Yeah, like one of my friends at school has it. It's cool, I'll get this little pizza thing. But uh, he was about to get this Bao Bun. So back at the boardwalk, water squirter game, one of the medium prizes was this Bao Bun, right? So he was like, Okay, cool, like I can get a Bao Bun here. Uh he got it, opened it up, and it was branded as a Bao Bun, but it was just a very generic, like foam squishy thing. So he opened up, he was like, This isn't a bow bun. And I'm like, and then like he he was upset about it. So he was like, Man, like they said it's a bow bun, it's not a bow bun. Uh I say it's a silver lining because I was like, hey man, uh this is a really good lesson. That these boardwalk places, like, this is not the place to spend your money to get something that you really want. Like, they are not in it for your happiness. You know what I mean? Like, they're trying to make money off of it, they're gonna brand it, and you know, so they're obviously biting off on this trend of these bao buns, but they're not selling bao buns. It's these knockoff little shitty things, and you are the exact type of customer that they are that they're looking for. These kids are like, Oh, bow buns is gonna be great, and it wasn't. Um, I was like, hey man, the good thing is that like you didn't spend your money for this, right? You know, you spent like, you know, this was mommy and daddy, and yeah, imagine how imagine how pissed I am, dude. That's my money. Exactly. My money.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01But you know, hey, this is a good lesson, right? Is that like because he wanted to play another like lobster trap game where you have to like hit it and like have the lobster go into one of these pots. I was like, hey man, you know how you wanted to play that, right? Like, this is a great lesson of like, this is not the place to spend your money. A are you guaranteed to win? No, definitely not. And even if you do win, the prize that you're gonna get, you're probably not gonna be super thrilled with it at the end of the day. So uh yeah, boardwalk, amusement, park areas, I think are the worst things. It is terrible. And it preys on the young emotions of children and their happiness at the expense of their parents. Um so yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh but over I will call out that you uh you did introduce your Bow Buns question the same way I was like, You guys ever heard of Nirvana? Yeah. True.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't specify the toy. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you guys ever heard of bow buns?
SPEAKER_02Like, like you mean the like, yeah. You think I'm stupid? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, true. Again, I'm just assuming that you know, if you have kids, it's kind of like saying, like, are you guys familiar with 6'7? Well, everyone's like, the number's 6'7, of course. And it's like, well, no, no, no, it's the you know, it's this thing that's going around. Um, but so are there uh are bow buns and these needos like laboo boos? Uh and like are they the same thing as a laboo boo? Or like another fad? Like are these layers like the fad, got it. Yeah, it is just like kids are really into these little bow buns, so they have all these different colors and you know, sizes of them now. And uh just it it just seems like this generation is into squishy things. Yeah, things that you can squish and play with, you know, almost akin to like fidget fidget toys or whatever, but like that seems to be the thing. Like, do you guys know what squish mellows are? Yeah. Squish mellows are really great. Yeah, it's like they're stuffed animals essentially, but like kids in high school are like, oh, squish mellows, these are great. Just like really just squishy things, soft squishy things seem to be the hit for this generation. Uh I don't know. Um I wanted to I wanted to ask you guys, because this situation came up uh when I was visiting uh with my family out in Arizona. If you're out, it uh I'll say with family, right? And like your elders more particularly. Sure. How do you handle the check? With like my parents? Your parents, aunts, uncles, you know, elder family members, how does that normally go down?
SPEAKER_00I'll answer in that like I don't have as complicated a time navigating it, only because uh so much of my family's in in in India, right? So like when I go to India, I don't really pay for anything because like I'm not expected to, like, I don't have the currency, whatever. Like, I pay for some stuff here and there, maybe, but like where they're I don't have the currency. I'm sorry guys. Well it's not even that even exchange, man. The part is like even even if I did uh I'm like there is this there is this like cultural thing, I I think, where it's like you're a you're the kid, like you're you're like you're not gonna pay for stuff. Like that's just how it is. And so that makes it at least a little bit easier.
SPEAKER_01Not to say that I'm assuming you're alluding to that it's almost dis I don't know if disrespectful is the right word, but that's it's just a cultural norm that the elders would pay for you when you're there, or yeah, or like I don't know, like would it be like would they be insulted if you paid for that?
SPEAKER_00I don't know if they would be insulted, but I do get the sense that we're living in this like weird awareness, right? Which is that like I do think they know whether it's my dad or me or whoever, like us in the states were obviously um like financially in in a in a in a different place on some level just because of the currency translation, right? Like beyond even just like anything else. So I do think one thing that feeds into it is just like there's not this expectation of like I don't know, I don't know how to articulate it. It feels like there's an awareness that like you guys have money, but when you're here, it's like we we take care of you. Like, so it's it's it's it's this bizarre thing of it's not like you know, let me big dog you while you're here, it's like it is the gesture that matters. It is the I'm gonna take you like for whenever I'm in India, right? A thing that happens to me a lot is I'll have different aunts and uncles who will just be like, I'm taking you to the store because I gotta buy you some stuff. Like, I gotta buy you some stuff. And I'm like, all right, and like, you know, and they'll be like, Oh, these shades are cool, like whatever. And so they buy me things. I do think there's on some level an awareness of like my career here and what I'm doing and whatever. So I don't think like I I guess the point I'm getting to is they don't ever look at these things as like you would never be able to buy this himself or want to buy this himself. It's just like uh I have to do something for you. Um and so I don't know, that kind of colors how that goes. Um, at least like you know, from a cultural standpoint. Going back to your question, at least in the States, what I find is I feel like at least with my parents, there's almost this like agreement where whenever we're doing like family things, like my my dad usually is the one who who handles it. There's times where mom where my mom has been like, it's like let him make let him pay, he makes so much money, like whatever, and like it's half joking, half serious. I'm like, whatever, that's fine. Yeah, um but I I will say our relationship with finances is maybe just so different culturally still, right? Which is like on some level we do play at it as if like it's all a pool that we all kind of like are either like putting into or taking out of. So like you know, it's like I supported my parents when they bought a house, right? Like um, whenever my mom needs like a couple thousand dollars because she wants to like do stuff for people in India or whatever, like all she has to do is ask and like it's done, right? Um, so I think it's this interesting relationship of like you don't look at you know picking up a tab as like it it's it's feels like it's more of like a moment in like a broader thing than it is like who's paying for this dinner or how are we gonna handle this check. It's it's like almost like less important because there's a broader thing at play of like how we support each other and how we show up for each other. Um, I will say, like, yeah, I don't know, I've never encountered it with like if I went like as you were asking, I was like, all right, if I went out to like dinner with like my uncle and my aunt, I'm actually not sure how that would go. Like I might feel inclined to be like, let me get this. Like, I'm an adult now and we're kind of American, so it's okay. It's my treat. Uh or it could be the same thing as an Indian, which is like, shut up, you're a kid. Like yeah, you don't pay for stuff here. So, anyways, that's my reason. Yeah, and that's that's Brandon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, go yeah, go ahead.
SPEAKER_02I I was I was gonna say that that's interesting because um we're obviously not Indian, but I feel like the uh I almost called them the adults, the the the elder generation in my family. I think C is in that way. Like we're not kids, but I feel like they they still feel like if we go out to dinner or something, like they feel like we they will treat us like some or feel kind of like obligated to pick up the tab. Um and I like I always offer to get get everybody's like obviously we're we're a big family. Um and like if we're uh even if it was just me and Megan or whatever, but we're usually doing these in family settings, and it's kind of like like look, I can get your stuff in with ours. That's that's no problem. But I I usually never end up getting that. It's it's almost always taken by the uh elderly generation. The the real adults we'll call.
SPEAKER_01And that's kind of like the that was a starting point where the question was like, I I again, as you know, constant theme with me is like overthinking these things, but is how aggressively because I think that it's always appropriate to at the very least offer that you know, you should like I am never going to expect that someone's going to pay for me. I think that's I think if you get to the point where you're just expecting it and you're okay with it, like you know, uh it's gone a little bit too far. But you should definitely always offer to pay. I think that you know, I think it sounds like we're all on the same page of like splitting a check feels the most like I don't know, just but the most wrong of being like, you know, especially when you're out with family. They're like, okay, so what did you get? I got a water and I got a salad, like you know, like that's never a thing. So it's always one person is covering the check. But so like, how aggressively do you do that? Because just like you're you know, the situation I was out with my aunt and grandfather, right? So like the check comes and it's like, you know, she offers a pan. I'm like, no, no, no, like I can get like I don't I don't want to disrespect because she's like, no, like we're the adult, like you know, you know, we're supposed to be taking you out, like you're out here visiting us. And I don't know how aggressively to be like, no, no, no, like I will pay for you know, because I want it to be authentic and genuine. I'm not just doing it performative, be like, you sure you don't want me to pay for it? Like without actually like reaching for my wallet or the check or anything like that. So like uh I don't know how aggressively to where, like, hey, you you know, like, where's the line between making the motion like you're gonna do it or actually do it because it because they would feel better for them to cover? Because I'm picturing myself as an adult with my kids, like I'm hoping that my kids never have to pay for, you know, if they're out with us, like we've got everything, don't worry about it. This is like your safe spot where, like, hey, you know, get it, all this sort of stuff. But like, you know, especially with outside family members and and even like closer family members, uh, I always struggle with that. Of like how, you know, Sarav, like we even had an instance like that when he came down to visit, right? When we were at like the grocery store. And like for us, it's more just like it's very like casual of like you go to pay for it, and then I like fight you for it and pay for it, and then it's like, oh, like, you know, you can just get the net, you know, whatever it is. Like on a very familiar level, it's not that big of a deal. But when it's like family that there are some expectations set already, it's it's a very uncomfortable situation, especially when I'm out with like Megan's parents and things like that. It's like yeah, like, man, I don't know how aggressive. Like, am I being insulting by being like by like taking the check and be like, no, like I'm paying for it. You know what I mean? Yeah. And I feel like it's different. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I was I was just gonna say, I I I think like if I was in your position, I think what would dick My actions would just be like the most uninformed or like not statistically informed uh sense of like balance, right? Which is just like I tried to pay for when we were buying groceries when I visited you, right? To me, balance is like you're hosting me, I'm getting to stay at your place for zero ninety nine. You know, like to me, it's like I want to give something and like I want to I want to get as much as like meeting us in the middle. So like if I was in your shoes, right? It's almost like when I fight to like try to pay for something, it's a reflection of like, hey, I feel like I want to get this because you got this last thing. And I also am huge with just like listen, you can get the next one. Like you can get the next one, I need to get this one.
SPEAKER_01And so, like, if you're with people for a significant for a length of time and you know that there are gonna be other instances of of paying for stuff, it can even out, you know what I mean? But if it's just like a one-time meal where it's like this could be it, like yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I'm I'm still kind of like, if I feel like I I don't want to say oh, but you know what I mean? Like I feel like I want to do that, like I will. Um, and I would say like that maybe is the just the distinction between like the Indian culture and the American culture, where like the American side of me wants to do that selectively. Uh, when I feel like it's a real show of my appreciation. I know that the Indian side is like I can't do that because like if I were to try to pay for things when I'm in India or something, it's it's like, all right, like settle down, big boy. Like, you know, like don't try to, you know, come in here all like the new sheriff in town kind of thing, you know? It's like your shit. Know your place, know your role, like get treated, uh, because it's about the ritual of this. Um, so yeah, I don't know. That's how I think about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I don't know if it's with it's different with my parents than it would be with others. And I I'm trying to think. I I don't know when the last time we had the situation where we were like out with somebody who wasn't my parents that was like part of that older generation, like just then without them there. Um like with my parents, it's like a pretty aggressive thing where like my dad and I are like trying to to get the check when it comes first. But like like pick it up and and get it in and and to get it. But it's like like that's like that's my dad. Um and he does the this thing all the time where he'll like go to the waitress and say, Hey, when it's time, bring the check to me and like off offhand and stuff. And I always know when he does it because I can see them like like when they come by and slip it to him, it's like alright, I know he already had pre-planned for this. Um at that point, that's what I go. At that at that point, I'll just let him like let him take it or or whatever. But if I was out with somebody else, like like with uh somebody else from that generation was doing it, like I would, I would if I can get to it first, again, not aggressively, not like a race for it, but I'd say, Oh yeah, no, please like let us let us get this, you're you know, hosting or whatever. If they like trump me on that, was up was like like no, like you're you're not doing that, just just let us get it. I yeah, I I wouldn't like fight them on it. I would I would back down because again, I I do think that that would come off as as a little bit of uh like like offensive for them because I I do think there is the like not even like a uh I I wouldn't call it a cultural thing, but this generational thing where it's like they feel they they are never gonna not see us as that generation they have to care for and that that that they would want to do it. And if grabbing a meal is something that that they could do that with, like I'm I'm not gonna want to step on their toes about it. Um but I will ask if there's if we can contribute contribute to it or or pick it up if we can.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's funny because my parents are definitely not that way. There's it has it has created some moments, and there's one that that I'll never forget from Megan where uh where like my family was visiting and I was on a trip or I just wasn't there one night. And uh and you know, Megan was like, okay, you know, like we can, you know, you can come over and we can, you know, you know, you know, and I can make this food or we can do whatever. And then my parents like, no, no, no, like you know, like we should like go out to dinner. So it was, you know, my family and then Megan. So then uh so then the check came. Uh you know, and my dad took it and then Megan's like, oh no, no, you know, like you know, you know, like I can I can I can pay for this meal. My dad's like, oh, okay, thanks. And like gave it to her. And Megan's like, what? Like she was so confused and flabbergasted. She was like, you know, as we were like getting together, we were like, where is it? She's like, Brendan, just so you know, there's gonna be gonna be a bigger charge in the card. I'm like, oh, what happened? She told me that story, and I was like, I was so embarrassed, like for my family, you know what I mean? It was like it was just yeah, she should have said, she should have said, wait, no, no. Yeah, wait, that's another I didn't mean it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Let me get money. Yeah. I was gonna say Yeah, no, I not only I mean that is so insane it reminded me of there are sketches you can find on YouTube of like brown people fighting over the check. And it's like it's like elevated like you know, into like ridiculousness, but it's like turns into like a full-on like shootout almost of like people fighting over like who gets to pay for the check. Yeah. So like everything like that example, that story, it just is like activates like all the like awkward bones in my mind.
SPEAKER_01Like what yeah, exactly. If you put yourself in that situation, we're like, there's no chance that like we said that we wanted to go out to dinner, you know, like you know, we could have you know, she could have made food at home and it all but we want to go out to dinner with our daughter-in-law, surf and turf too. Yeah, they yeah, you know, it was like a seafood restaurant, it was a nice seafood restaurant. She was like, Oh no, I can pay for that. He's like, Okay, thanks. Like that was it. It was like, oh man, okay. Well, yeah, so those those types of things is what make me really consider uh different situations.
SPEAKER_02Um a part of me does feel like and and granted, like I I think if you're doing that, like you you shouldn't offer as a as like a gesture. Like it shouldn't be like a you never want want to do like a performative thing about yeah. Right. Yeah. Like granted, that that's as messed up as that is. Actually, take somebody up on it.
SPEAKER_01It's kind of like be careful what you offer. Yep, absolutely. Um all right, uh before we get into the question of the week, I just want it. We're we're we're we're now towing the line between public podcast and private audience sort of stuff that we deal with here. But uh July 4th for me is when the season changes and it is the start of fantasy football uh for me. So uh that that's when that's when the gears start turning for me. So if you saw I activated our league uh on either the fourth or fifth, so it's there, it's locked in, it's ready to go. Um I'll I'll put out stuff on our chat as well, but for anyone that listens to it from the group, because I'm still assuming that that's the largest percentage of our listeners, maybe not. But um, but it's activated, ready to go. We'll get together with a video chat here shortly just to iron out some things. Um but uh but excited for a new season. I'm ready to get back into it. Um we'll talk about this uh a little bit more, but the draft I think is going back to what we have historically done. We'll do it online using Yahoo. We'll do it a week before. Uh, you know, the the idea was that we'd all be together to do a live in-person draft. But since it hasn't really been working out in the past few years, it makes it a little bit more difficult to organize it then with all the technology that has to be set up and the host site and stuff like that. So we'll probably just go back to doing what we normally do. But um to say, I'm excited to uh to get ready for a life for fantasy football season. I think for most of us, like our group chat is definitely the most active during the season uh with a lot of talk back and forth. So excited to uh to get involved in that again.
SPEAKER_00I would just like to say the way you said you activated the league was the first time in my life I've ever wondered like, is there a thing as like a digital black light I could shine over this Yahoo app.
SPEAKER_01It could not be released to the public. You do not want. It's it there's a lot of reasons why July 4th is my favorite holiday. All right.
SPEAKER_00It's uh someone the there's some independence for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's just I I get a lot of enjoyment out of the data and analysis and projections throughout the whole season. I really just love getting all involved in it. So nice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um all right. Let's wrap it up with question of the week. I kind of look oh, first of all, quick side note, bad news. Real downer. Okay. We had no crab cakes on my trip to the city. What? I uh yeah, I spent my whole my whole part at the end of last episode is that how crab cakes are my favorite fourth of July food and they become tradition. And then uh this week, uh, you know, we were like going through the days and there were no crab cakes. And I was like talking about, I was like, yo, we're getting crab cakes, right? And she's like, I don't, I don't think she I don't think she mentioned crab cakes. I'm like, is it too late for me to drop a subtle hint? You're gonna have us down here and not have the crab cakes? This is about to derail the entire trip. What are we doing here? So no crab cakes. So now I have a plan in place. Now that I know I thought it was just a staple every year, but now that I know that the menu can vary year to year, I gotta make sure to let it be known before I get there that this is an expectation now. You can mess around with any of the other meals that you want, but when it comes down to crab cakes, you gotta keep that consistent. That's a yearly thing.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, there's a seafood place by me. Uh and I decided to on a whim, maybe inspired by our crab cake conversation, hell yeah. Decide to drop in for a lunch. They had a $25 crab roll. Okay. So, you know, what a crab roll is. It's New York price, it's like a lobster roll, but with crab. And I was like, you know what? I got crab on the mine, I'm gonna get this. And it was like a really good lesson of like there is something about a crab cake that is so specific. It's not like I was like, Oh, I'll get a crab roll, it'll scratch the itch. Not the same as getting a crab cake. Now there's an important question though. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Was it Connecticut or or Maine style?
SPEAKER_00It was is Connecticut the one with mayo.
SPEAKER_01No, that is uh Maine style is with mayonnaise. Connecticut is warm, is warm lobster meat with butter. The main is cold with mayonnaise.
SPEAKER_00This was Connecticut style.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, warm with butter. Warm with butter.
SPEAKER_00Which was it was it was it was good, but I was like, oh, it's not hitting the way I want a crab cake to hit. And I realized like I gotta I gotta just suck it up and go hit one, two, three restaurant and bark, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yep. That's my only option. Um all right. Question of the week kind of alluded to it when I was talking about my boardwalk uh instance of something that is generally loved, but that I despise. So uh, do you guys have an example of that? Something that uh that is well liked, but you in particular just do not care for it. And I'll add one more for mine, just as a quick one. I mentioned it before, but for me it's sunny days. People love sunny days, and I do not like them, particularly like midday sunny days in the summer when it's just just hot, the sun's immediately overhead, you're sweating, and there's that like all the bugs out there. I hate that vibe. That is not for me. Uh but you know, at at uh polar opposite of Megan, who loves sunny days and sunshine, I am an overcast guy. I love overcast days, nice and cool. But uh, so do you guys have anything like that?
SPEAKER_00My answer is kind of boring, uh, but it was the only first thing that it was the first and only thing that came to mind. I and um I have to figure out how to articulate this right. I am not a fan of a lot of music where it's just like the four by four, like steady beat, which usually applies to a lot of like electronic music, a lot of house music, like a lot of music where there's no variation of rhythm, it's just mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm. For the most part, I would say 95% of that music I deeply dislike when I walk into a bar or a club or a venue, and like that's the music and people are dancing to it. I'm like, I need to get the fuck out of here now. Like, I hate this. Um, I don't know what it is. And I don't the reason I need to be specific about like it's more about that, like the rhythm and than it is a genre. Because yeah, that's what they're doing. But electronic music, there's a lot of electronic music I like that doesn't do that. Like one of my favorite songs is uh all-time favorite songs is How Deep Is Your Love by Calvin Harris, right? But if you listen to that, there's like enough interesting things happening that like I'm like, no, this I'm I'm vibing with this. But I do feel like a thing that is very popular that so many people love is going to these like clubs and concerts and whatever where it's just the same, like mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm. And I'm just like, this is so boring to me, and I feel suffocated by the lack of just interesting variation sound, whatever. Um, but people like live and live for this shit, like they want to do that for hours. Uh, so that's probably mine. Um, and there's a lot of like pop music that has fallen into that category that people have liked, and I've been like, nope, not for me. Um, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Man, it's funny that you uh uh mentioned that because uh I don't know if it's been on for a while or not, but How I Met Your Mother, uh they've it's been in syndication on E, and I feel like I haven't seen that before, but the great thing about YouTube TV is that you can just add it to your list, and now I have essentially the whole library of How I Met Your Mother, which is awesome. So I've been catching episodes here and there. And uh and I just um and it reminded me of the How I Met Your Mother episode where they're in like the club and they can't make out what each other's saying, and it was just that in the background, just you know, uh it was like exactly that. So I know what you're talking about. Yeah, it's just interesting that you picked out the tempo of the music and it could be and so you recognize it in like country music and all these other genres. It was just like country music doesn't really do that, right?
SPEAKER_00It is it is more of a electronic thing, um a house music thing, right? Like I think there's a lot of genres that fit it more. Um, yeah, but I just I can't stand it. But people people love it, people want to just be like I think a lot of like Europe too. Like if you go like, you know, yeah, uh, what is it like Yacht Week in Ibitha or whatever the hell, like you know, it's like that's that is what you're hearing. Like uh, and I'm like, I I cannot get over that a lot of people find this to be like the soundtrack of their tropical, luxurious, scenic vacation and like party trips and stuff. I'm like, this sucks. Like, take me to like a Hispanic area, like take me to you know, just some fucking rhythm, some drums, some like maybe you're just not doing enough heavy drugs for that to be for that to be enjoyable.
SPEAKER_01Very possible. Yeah, you just gotta be zoned out, man. Maybe, maybe that's the case. Yeah. Brandon, what about you, man?
SPEAKER_02I can think of a couple of different like specific things that people have like that I'm like lower on. In terms of like something that's a little bit more generalized, that is like generally loved and people generally like doing that. Um I wouldn't say that I hate it, but I'm not as big of a fan, or it's like not my like top thing that I would want to do uh is going to the pool. Like going swimming in a pool specifically is not my like if I'm gonna be in water, I'd much prefer to be in the beach and to to like like cool off in that way and like do that as a summer activity versus like going to the pool. Going to the pool, you smell like chlorine after you like you feel like you like your your you your muscles are all like I don't know, drained or whatever, and it's hard to go. And I have very sensitive skin and pool chlorine like does a number on it. So whenever I get out, like my skin feels all tight and scaly. The enjoyment that I get out of like going to a pool generally does not outweigh the cost of what how I feel after having done it. So it's like the pool is something that I can like like the summertime, which is which is weird because like I like we grew up, and granted it was an above-ground pool, but like I grew up with a pool and like could go swimming at any time. And for the most part, most of the summers, we were out there all the time. And I remember like loving it, and I loved going to the pool. Um, but like now, like swimming is like just not it's it's not my my most favorite summer activity to do, and I don't know that that's not too popular of a thought. Fascinating. Love the beach. I'm the other way the beach. Give give me all the sand, give me all the salt water. All the opposite. I like going body surfing, like like playing all the the games on the sand, give me some spike ball. I would way rather do that than exactly a pool.
SPEAKER_00I love a pool. I love a pool over. I love the safety. I love that there's no sharks. I love that there's no crocodiles that are gonna eat me while I'm in Porto Varta. Um just saying, this is real shit. Like fair.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I hate the feeling of sand and it like it's weird that you're talking about chlorine, but like the feeling of salt water after you get out of the ocean, it's terrible. See, that that never bothers me as much.
SPEAKER_02Like this the salt water feeling, like it, like the the I don't know, that feels like a more of a yeah, I don't I don't know why it is. It like that it it it just it bothers me less to have like salty, sandy hair and everything than it does to have a core chemical on me and have the the smell. I would I would rather smell like salt water in beach than than pool. Yeah. That's a comment. Yeah, like I said, it's a it's a it's it's not a popular opinion, but it's it's one that like especially as I've like I said when I was a kid, like I loved going to the pool and that was fine, and I don't I don't know what it is. I think it's my skin is more sensitive now than it was, or I'm at least more attentive to it. Like it it it bothers me more now than than it did, and I'd I'd much rather be at the beach.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I feel like the the usual question is are you a beach person or a lake person? But I thought it was generally accepted that everyone's a pool person.
SPEAKER_02Can't go wrong with a pool, but although I I do think I'd probably rather a pool than a lake. Lake muck and and all that. Like if like to go swimming on, I I I don't love lakes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if you're a beach guy, you're inherently not a lake guy, I guess. You can't be both. Um and I'm a hundred percent a beach guy. Yeah. Cool.
SPEAKER_00You guys got anything else to add for this week? Uh no. Just that we're a little under a month out from our little get together, and I'm very excited. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I've got yeah, I'm gonna start putting some stuff out about that. I got some things in the works that uh we'll see, we'll see where it goes where I can uh put together for it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I also uh I'm gonna need a ride, those of you in Connecticut. Just in general, if anyone's out there wants to uh Adrian, uh if you're listening, uh I know Kevin's family's too big now. Do you always seem to make it work?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm sure that someone will allow you to stripe yourself to the roof and get on. Thank you. That's all I want. I just don't want to have to rent the car. It's so annoying. Yeah, I can imagine. For it to just sit there for the other days too.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Yeah. It's just to and from.
SPEAKER_01All right. Uh sweet. That brings to a wrap for us for this week. Appreciate you listening and uh hope you're all doing well. And we'll talk to everyone again next week. Enjoy the World Cup the last the last uh few weeks and the matches as they're going on, and uh enjoy getting geared up for the fantasy football season, because I am. All right, we'll talk to y'all later. Have a good one. See ya. See ya.
