Bet Big Talk Loud Podcast June 18th with Chris Hodge & JR

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to the Bet Big Talk Loud Podcast for Thursday, June 18th. I'm Chris Hodgs. I got JR back with me. Played Good Father last week.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, I was here exactly the time I said that I could be here. And you even looked at me, you're like, what do you mean you got a recital? I'm like, I can't. My daughter's first recital. I can't miss it. I just I can't miss it.

SPEAKER_01

Why? Because emotional damage down the line? Forget about it.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, I she's number six of six. I know what I'm gonna deal with in 16, 18 years. So yeah, you you do it all right in the early days. And man, you're a better man than me. You have to pay for it later.

SPEAKER_01

I'll tell you because this business for the last 20 years has gotten me out of every party, funeral, wedding, whatever. Babe, I gotta work. Babe, I gotta work.

SPEAKER_00

Hockey game, whatever. It does work. And we are working. Legitimately, we have to work, right? So it's definitely gotten me out of it.

SPEAKER_01

It gets me out of a lot, man.

SPEAKER_00

Especially we gotta be here early on Saturdays and Sundays. So like when the wife wants to go out on a Friday night or Saturday night, like, get you out of it. I can't go out. What do you mean you can't go out? She's like, everybody's gone. I said, you can go out. I gotta be up at 4 30 in the morning. I gotta go to work. Not happening.

SPEAKER_01

And this is why I hate this next two months because there's nothing really going on. We do have the World Cup, you know. And I shouldn't really like tell my wife, like on this podcast, that like I lie about games. Like, I gotta work, can't go. Oh, someone died? Oh, shame.

SPEAKER_00

I can't go. I'll be there in spirit. No, there's a Lithuania game going on at 8:30. I gotta be in the office till 8.15.

SPEAKER_01

The next two months are tough. You know what it really gets tough? I think when ESPN, they started showing the spelling bee. Oh, they just put up in the chat.

SPEAKER_00

I thought the same thing. I'm like, what are we watching right now? When did the I mean they you know what it was? Poker was so they did not expect poker to take off the way. If you remember all the way back when Chris Moneymaker made the final take, what a name, too. Chris Moneymaker, right? Almost like that was set up. And he takes over and just ruins every professional poker player on the planet. Sam Farhar goes down to everybody just this guy was on fire. And they didn't think, I mean, poker became all of a sudden huge everywhere. It went from zero to a hundred overnight. If they allowed gambling on the spelling bee, that would accept what they were thinking. They're like, well, let's try darts, let's try spelling bee when we leave. Like stinglong woo, minus 700.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. Uh but yeah, in the next two months are tough. Um, I mean, the the good people at ESPN always give us something to talk about because I I tell you, I don't know who the talent manager is over there. Where they the people they put on that station is just unbelievable. We had this guy, Vincent Goodwill, who is this guy had to go from literally, you don't know who he is down here. You have no idea who this fucking guy is, to top clown within 15 seconds.

SPEAKER_00

But Disney does own them. I don't care who I don't care about. You said who's doing the hiring. Goofy's doing the fucking hiring.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, this guy goes on national TV and actually has the balls, God bless him. I mean, to go on and say something that stupid with a straight face, to say the Larry O'Brien trophy, the trophy they give you for winning the NBA championship, is a participation trophy because eight straight years is has got eight straight different NBA champions. So he calls it a participation trophy. Is that called parody? I mean, you could call it with you could call it a million things before you call it a parody.

SPEAKER_00

I love the idea that a different team wins it every year. See, I don't. I think it's I know you like dynasties. I like dynasties. I don't. I don't want to growing up, I remember, you know, even back when I first got into this business in the 90s, the superpower that was Emmett Smith and and the Dallas Cowboys. I don't want to watch that every year.

SPEAKER_01

But when San Francisco beat them, it just meant something extra.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, we just watched the dynasty get taken down, right, with Kansas City? They were a bit of a dynasty.

SPEAKER_01

No, they were they were, I think they were a dynasty. They were a dynasty. It just constantly did. Yeah, they were a dynasty.

SPEAKER_00

They did three fast. Oh, I mean, it was almost like Tom Brady left the Patriots, and all of a sudden Patrick Mahomes took over. Well, they won two.

SPEAKER_01

And then they get blown out in the third Super Bowl, but no NFL team has ever won three Super Bowls, and yet we still have a bunch of dynasties. We do. The 49ers were a dynasty in the 80s, Dallas was the dynasty in the 90s. Steelers in the 70s. The Patriots. Yep. Man, dynasties. I think dynasties are good for sports. You could argue it both ways. A lot of people think parody is good.

SPEAKER_00

Parody's fantastic. I love the idea. I mean, look at look at the Chiefs. They went from zero to nothing overnight. And that to me is an explanation. Quarterback. What you want, right? Yeah. Quarterback. They got a quarterback. They got and they moved up. No one knew Patrick Mahomes was going to be Patrick Mahomes. No.

SPEAKER_01

But um today New York was parade day.

SPEAKER_00

It was. Right?

SPEAKER_01

It was parade day. And they were estimating some four or five million people were trying to get into that. How about the parade was set to start at 10 to 10:30 in the morning, Thursday morning? They closed down the parade route at 7.30 in the morning. It was already full.

SPEAKER_00

7.30 in the morning. I had, like I always do, CNBC on in the morning, right? When the market opens, I'm always watching what's going on. They were talking about getting to the studio, which is, you know, downtown. They had to go through it. He's like, the subway's. Not easy. Oh my God.

SPEAKER_01

Not easy. But you know, I hope there's a lesson learned here. And I'm not, look, when Oklahoma City wins a championship last year, sure. It's important to the people of Oklahoma City and their fan base. And that goes from I'm I'm not trying to poo-poo shit on anything. Oh you're about to.

SPEAKER_00

Is this a but? Is this a I feel and however coming?

SPEAKER_01

I'm trying to do it in a nice way. I really am.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, the amount of people that are coming out, like I got friends here on Long Island who really wanted to go to the parade, but they're not stupid. They're not dumb. They're not going to go.

SPEAKER_01

In terms of the parade, I mean, there was just so many people there, but in terms of championships, right? And again, if OKC wins, if Indiana wins, it's important to those people. It's important to those fans, as it should be. But if you're an NBA player and you're sitting down watching what the Knicks just did and how the Knicks fans overtake buildings. It's unreal. And what Jalen Brunson is becoming and going to be, okay, because to me, Jalen Bronson's one title is lopped past way by Kevin Durant's two titles. Kevin Durant. As far as what it means to the city? In terms of what it means to overall basketball.

SPEAKER_00

Well, think about also he's Jalen Brunson's a legend. You want to talk about a guy that was selfless to give up a hundred plus million dollars to tell the team, go out and get people to put around me.

SPEAKER_01

Now I have to be honest with you. Because he wants to win. Now I have to be honest with this. And and I KD's not doing that. LeBron's not doing it. I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it. Not a hundred.

SPEAKER_00

You know it's gonna come to me later. Okay, if you Tom Brady did it.

SPEAKER_01

Tom Brady did it. Okay. I mean, Britain Manning did it. This is what you do if you want to win. First of all, you're you're in New York, right? Now, I would do it in Texas. I would do it in Florida. I see what you're saying. I mean, first of all, you're doing it in New York, where the criminal politicians just gotta fuck you up the ass as much as they can and just rape you over tax.

SPEAKER_00

Think about also how much more he's gonna make in endorsements compared to everywhere else.

SPEAKER_01

But, you know, a guy like KD, I'm not going to the Knicks. I'm I'm I'm going to the Nets. Like, oh, let's just piss, let's just piss people off, right? Let's just do that, right? You got this guy, Juan Soto, who left the Yankees to go to the Mets. To the Mets. Fine. He's allowed to do it. They made him a fantastic offer.

SPEAKER_00

Not just that. You realize it was like one major thing that got him to go. What was it? The uh the luxury suite.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Whatever the reason. They made him a better offer. Not by much, but I mean, are we going to really? Okay, that's where I'm going, right? Seriously? So this guy does an interview and he says, Well, I left the Yankees to go to the Mets because I wanted to compete for championships for the next 15 years. That's never been said ever. Ever. Ever. But you have, you know how dumb you have to be to say that? I'm going to leave the organization with the most all-time titles to go to Mickey Mouse.

SPEAKER_00

It's like saying, I'm going to leave when Tom Brady was the quarterback. I'm going to leave the New England Patriots to go play for the Cleveland Browns.

SPEAKER_01

Right, right. Why would you ever do it? And then you got this moron, Kevin Durant, who's got 17 burner accounts. That's how mentally weak this fuck is, right? And he actually. That's insane by itself. And I know the Knicks were down, but if you know anything about New York, it is not the Nets versus the Knicks.

SPEAKER_00

Never.

SPEAKER_01

It is the Knicks. There's like a hundred people that root for the Brooklyn Nets.

SPEAKER_00

We don't even remember them when we're talking about. Oh man. I mean, to me, they'll always be the New Jersey Nets. Yeah, whatever. Regardless. And they put them in Brooklyn. Yay. No one kills.

SPEAKER_01

And this fool KD with this all the fool Kyrie with this bigger fool, James Harden, all thought to go to Brooklyn. Yep. If they would have gone to the Knicks and won, you're gonna see you're gonna get the Jalen Brunson treatment.

SPEAKER_00

Yo, legends. Let me ask you a question. Okay, I think you're gonna wind up asking anyway, but maybe maybe. Um, does this put Jalen ahead of Derek Jeter?

SPEAKER_01

Not yet.

SPEAKER_00

Not yet, right?

SPEAKER_01

No, but it puts him ahead of Mark Messier. It puts him ahead of Mark Messier in my book. I mean, what one ended a 54-year drive. You know, I'm glad you brought this up. I know you're you're not a Rangers fan, you're an Islanders fan, but you do root for the Knicks, right? So MSG is like split for you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I have this idea for Madison Square Garden. Uh Madison Square Garden, if you out there, and this is so many years down the road. So many years down the road. But let's say 10 years from now, Jalen Brunson retires, eight years from now, whatever. And the Knicks, they're going to retire his jersey. That's already a foregone conclusion. Done. What I do if I'm MSG, if you go to the garden, they have the Knicks retired numbers championship banners on one side, they have the Rangers retired numbers championship banners on the other side. What I would do is I would put out a separate corner for Marc Messier and Jalen Brunson. And I would put the two 11s together and let them stand out together. Because what those two guys did end in 54 years, end in 53 years. They have to be, and I know it's a team sport, and maybe neither guy would want that. But I would put those two guys together, those two.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, I know it's a team sport, and you just made a good point. It's team sport, but when you're when your individuality scores half the points just about for your team to win the championship. Oh, what he did. What he did was unbelievable. What Jalen Brunson did this run. Insane to me. And how about just everything they did before they even got to the finals? They didn't lose a game. Yeah, it was crazy. They didn't lose a game.

SPEAKER_01

I think I saw sustained two to Atlanta in the first round, but then they won 13. Well, they, you know, 11 in a row, 12 in a row. To get to the finals.

SPEAKER_00

To get to the finals. And then what was it? That in two months they had only lost two games by a total of three points? Two points?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so they they lost their last regular season game, but they didn't play anyone in that game. That one was to Charlotte. So take that game out. They hadn't lost um a game by more than a point going into the finals since March 31st. They lost two games by point to Atlanta. Their run.

SPEAKER_00

And they're getting points.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Their run was an all-time run.

SPEAKER_00

Um Bro, the the refs tried to take it from them. We talked about that, man. Absolutely criminal. I mean, we haven't talked since the final game. Yeah, they're it's insane. When you're that good, think about how good the Knicks had to be, right? Yeah. Not only did they have to beat San Antonio, they had to beat the fucking NBA. Yeah. They had to beat the refs.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they couldn't beat the criminals.

SPEAKER_00

They they took towns out. They put a guy in there that can only hit 32% of his free throws. Worst free throw shooter ever. Well, I mean, I mean You might be better. You might be better. I don't know. But we can't. We're not knocking Mitchell Robinson for what he did. What a rebound. Oh my God. Oh my knocking him, man. No way. We're not knocking any of these. I'm knocking no one.

SPEAKER_01

But I don't understand, man. You're seven feet five. You're an alien. And they missed calls on you. Nonsense. They called Jalen Brunson for a flagrant for closing out and turning around. And I forget who was shooting it for San Antonio. He landed on his calf.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That was a flagrant. Yet you missed the one on Wemby put his leg in on Jalen and threw him to the ground.

SPEAKER_00

They got to look at it afterwards and said it was not flagrant. Yeah, criminal. Criminal. They knew they had blue. But at the same time, are you really going to suspend Wemby? Where's this rank?

SPEAKER_01

No, you know they weren't going to do that. Where's this rank in terms of all-time New York City championships? I know where they're.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's number one. It's number one. It's number one. It's bigger than any World Series that I've ever seen won by the Yankees. I mean, those were great and all, but nothing like the hype. Everywhere you go. Oh, the Knicks. Ah, the Knicks. It's everywhere. And guys, we're all the way out on Long Island. We're not in Manhattan, right? So we're we're out there, but it is everywhere. It is Knicks fever. All over the place. I went to uh Dick's Sporting Goods. Make sure I put Sporting Goods after that. Went to Dick's to go uh get something. I needed something there real quick. It was the day after they won. You actually got in? Not only did I get in, brother, they were everywhere. Like there was just shirts and hats. Why aren't you wearing the shirt? You have the shirt.

SPEAKER_01

I wear I have the shirt on eat, but I wear it now. I wear it for the podcast. I wear it for the podcast, man. I'm trying to build something here. The championship shirt. Yeah, I got it. I know. It's nice.

SPEAKER_00

You should be wearing it.

SPEAKER_01

I have it on. I'm just showing the big talk loud podcast, man. Not really. Is that USA? We'll talk about them for tomorrow. Um but yeah, I mean, uh, I I have it number one. I think um Yankees 98 with that team was insane. I think with the Giants beating the Patriots.

SPEAKER_00

I think the Giants are bigger than the Yankees.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, yeah, beating the Patriots.

SPEAKER_00

You remember that? I mean, the helmet catch and all that. That was pretty amazing.

SPEAKER_01

Beating the undefeated Patriots was that was huge. That was huge. But in my lifetime, your lifetime, we're not too far apart. And the Rangers.

SPEAKER_00

Rangers were 54 years. That was a very big deal.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was. And and I I I think, look, it's still Jeter in my lifetime, right? We we I'm not going back to Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth. I'm not gonna have that argument. I mean, 50 years is long enough. I'm going back from 1976 to 2026. Jeter's number one. Again, New York sports athletes. Jeter's number one. I got Brunson number two. I got Messier number three. I got Eli Manning number four.

SPEAKER_00

I I gotta change that up. I would put Jalen Brunson number four only because it's only been it's such short-lived so far. Okay. I know you're in the hype of it right now, but we gotta talk about this at the end of his career. Okay. And then he'll probably be up.

SPEAKER_01

You got Jalen Brunson number four.

SPEAKER_00

I got him behind Messi. I have him behind Messi, eh?

SPEAKER_01

You have him behind a sport that no one cares is number four in the country.

SPEAKER_00

You can't say no one cares.

SPEAKER_01

I just said no one cares about they did five million viewers in the NBA did 20 million. That's the epitome of no one caring. Black people don't watch hockey. They've they've shunned an entire population of people. They didn't shun them. Yes, they did.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's just they don't watch. I don't know why. I mean, they and there's plenty of them that I mean, I don't even know what you're talking about. I have plenty of uh friends.

SPEAKER_01

There's five black people that play in the NHL. Yeah, I know. They they just completely shunned an entire population of people, right? So, yes, Messier, look, again, we could have that argument, but the Knicks are bigger than the Rangers in Manhattan, and it's not even close.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not saying that they're not. It's not even close. I mean, Messier was a big deal for a long time.

SPEAKER_01

Again, this is an argument like when Stephen A. Smith goes on and says LeBron's number two and everyone shits on him. It's like, no, you're giving them a fantastic compliment, right? Like it's Gina number one. We all agree upon that. Mariano's gotta be in there. I was just gonna say, how about Mariano Rivera?

SPEAKER_00

You gotta put him somewhere in there.

SPEAKER_01

We got he got to be, he's gotta be there. Number five. But you look at the NBA compared to the NHL. Now, look, we all year said that the NBA product is down, and I still believe that. Like the NBA is a bad product on the regular season.

SPEAKER_00

The regular season is terrible.

SPEAKER_01

But the NBA just shit on the NHL in terms of ratings. They just shit on them.

SPEAKER_00

Well, they do. Okay, I'll give you that. By four times. Doesn't make it a better product.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, no, no, I'm not I'm not discussing the product.

SPEAKER_00

And and and and I was still disgusted by the fucking referees. Yet again, I mean, I listen, I've always liked playoff basketball. I always have NBA playoff basketball is different from regular season, but again, going and watching it and watching what they're doing is just it's sickening. It's like I gotta watch this. I gotta watch what they've always done. Let them play.

SPEAKER_01

But they've always done it. They've always done it. I mean, we we could we can.

SPEAKER_00

There's books written by referees about it. I have it.

SPEAKER_01

They've always done it, man. Um, and again, this is all positive. Knicks get the job done, they end the 53-year drought. Um, now you gotta try to keep it together. Hopefully, they do.

SPEAKER_00

I was gonna say, what do you think?

SPEAKER_01

They're you know, next year's all five starters come back on contracts, they still got to sign Mitchell Robinson. I think Landry Shamett, they got to sign too, and that's an integral part. Let's see what they do in the draft.

SPEAKER_00

Do you think Shaman is an integral part?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I do. Yeah, yeah. Whenever, whenever you win and you're a major player, and he was a major player in this run in terms of the playoffs. Um, man, I I I bring up, I run it back. You know, Michael Jordan said this after, I believe, 1998 when they when they all broke up and they that did that last dance. And he said, we should be allowed to run it back until someone beats us. And then and then look what the Chicago Bulls did.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but the individuals want to go make money. You know what I mean? I mean, they want to they want to go make bigger money, and you can't do that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, how much fucking bigger are you gonna make? Cats making 60 million, the guys might make 50 million. How much bigger you want to make? But you know, you look at the Chicago Bulls in 1998, what'd they do? They broke up that team. What have the Chicago Bulls won since? They're on a 28-year drought.

SPEAKER_00

And they haven't even been thinking about that. Never thought about it. It's been that long. Yeah, it is.

SPEAKER_01

And and and besides, you know, and then they could have met went on a run and had Derek Rose not blown out his leg. I agree or blown out his knee. Right.

SPEAKER_00

Injury, very injury prone.

SPEAKER_01

But you break up a team that you know is a championship caliber team, and there is no guarantee that you get back because they haven't, and and by the way, Chicago Bulls are years away from getting back. So now you're on 28 years, and you're probably gonna be on 35 before you blink.

SPEAKER_00

Think about how many teams win the big game, uh, i.e. the Florida Marlins, and then fire sale their team. They did it twice.

SPEAKER_01

Twice. Yeah, they did it twice. Fire sale them. But that's uh that's also they they they it's hard for them to afford people down there in that sport. Come on. I mean you won. You just said it yourself. You won. Keep it together, keep it together. But they had now you got those guys down there. You gotta remember something bigger roster, um, less revenue coming in, even though you won. Um, I mean, the the revenue that the Knicks are gonna make off of this is insane. Insane.

SPEAKER_00

You know, so see how much those tickets were to the games? Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

So that brings up the next part of what I was gonna talk about here. I want to give a special thank you to the Knicks because you probably saved my marriage because the lie. Again, my wife watches this. I have no problem telling us now. Now it all comes out. Now we come to the game. You were gonna go? Game six, I was absolutely going. Really? And the lie that was being told was gonna be immense. I mean, well, you listen, you know, I gotta go meet some clients. Here's where I'll tell you how the Knicks are the biggest team in in New York, and I think a lot of people could relate to this. I have a lot of media contacts. Sure. All right, I call up, I want Yankees and Met tickets, that's one phone call. I get them instantly. I want Giants Jets tickets, I get them instantly. I was with, I was at the Mets game last Thursday, okay? I was with a bunch of my media people there. And I started mentioning, hey, game six. They were like, this guy's serious? They like laughed at me. Like, really? That that it's so easy. I I can get Yankees World Series tickets like that. Easy, right? Couldn't get into the next, so for free anyway. So I have to go now. Okay, now you gotta spend 20,000 a ticket. 20,000 times two is 40,000. That's kind of hard to hide from the wife. You know? Now, what lie are you coming up with of why you felt the need to spend 40 grand on tickets?

SPEAKER_00

So there's gotta be somewhere that you've got something where you could just buy them and say you got them from the station. The lie! The lie! Right, the lie. There has to be an account you can whack, like maybe your business Amex.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, maybe, but at the end of the day, here's the truth of the matter, right? I didn't really want to have to lie because you always get caught. You have to take her. No.

SPEAKER_00

That would have been my wife. If you're gonna spend 20 grand on a ticket, you're spending 40 and I'm going with you. Fuck, she has no interest. Oh, but she's coming. No. See, I'm taking one of my kids. The only way. Take her one of my kids. Oh, you only get to choose one? Yeah, the oldest one coming. I say you spend 80 and take all three.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, no, that's now you're into another, you're in a stratosphere line. You gotta come up with, you know, but they saved me from a great lie, so I appreciate that. Um, yeah, I mean, you how do you hide 40 grand? What do you come up with with that? Um, you know, I I and the lie like would have been weird.

SPEAKER_00

Where are you sitting for 20 grand?

SPEAKER_01

Not even great seats. No. Well, it wasn't even in 100s. No. It was probably like first couple rows of 200s, which is which is fine at MSG. But yeah, I'm happy. So I'm happy, I'm happy. Didn't have to come up with that. But yeah, I was going to game six. Wow. I I was I was absolutely going. I was getting in the building. I don't care how I was getting in the building. So they saved me from the 40,000. They probably saved me from the imminent divorce, which loses half the money after that from going with there. And um, my wife said something very telling to me. And I I a lot of guys, a lot of women have to be in this boat. She said, I've been with you for 28 years. I'm kind of concerned this is the happiest I've ever seen you. When the Knicks won that night. First of all, she she You were actually happy? Oh my God. Yeah, because you're never happy. No.

SPEAKER_00

No, you're not.

SPEAKER_01

No, I hate everybody.

SPEAKER_00

I go along right with her. I've never seen you happy.

SPEAKER_01

No, I I was happy that night. The Knicks are the only team I've ever wanted to see win. I've said that forever. Now I'm done. Now I don't have to care ever again. How about the Jets? No, I'm not a Jets fan. But I would like to see the Jets win. I have family members that are suicidal Jet fans. I would like to see the Jets win for the long-suffering Jet fans.

SPEAKER_00

You tried out for the Jets.

SPEAKER_01

I did. Yeah, but I'm like, I got cut. And and and by the way, I should have got cut. I had no I I really had no business. How about this? When you go to a tryout and you have the best day of your life and you get cut, how about it's nowhere near good enough? When you have the best tryout of when you jump the highest, when you run the fastest you ever run, when you catch every pass, when you run every route crisp, when you do everything right, and it is nowhere near good enough. That's when you just walk away and you're like, they got me. That's it.

SPEAKER_00

That's where you understand.

SPEAKER_01

That's it. I went home and my wife knows this conversation. I said to her, I did the best I will do. I cannot do better than I did. And they are not going to call me back. And they did not call me back.

SPEAKER_00

Were you watching, was it because you were watching some of the guys around you? And they were just they were just better. They were just better.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, I took my talent as far as I could change.

SPEAKER_00

How hard you tried, you were not going to be.

SPEAKER_01

It did not matter. They're just better. And that's it. You tip your hat, move on. Y'all was a full scholarship college athlete. Yeah, they paid for my school for free. I did nothing with it in terms of the education I should have received. I barely went to class. I never even asked you what you even got a degree in. Uh sports marketing. Throw that right out the window. Man, it's like look at what we do. Look at what we do. Sports marketing. Yeah, I know. The um, but yeah, I mean, it was You did use it. Yeah, kind of, sorta. But I tell you, I went on three job interviews in my life. And um, not one of the people asked nor cared about my college degree. Not one asked, not one cared. So, lesson learned. Um, I would have felt very I would have felt I would have felt violated, raped, if you will. That's a tough word to use, but had I paid for school.

SPEAKER_00

Sort of the way I feel about my daughter's education that I paid for. She does nothing with. God help. You know what I mean? I really paid for, thank God she doesn't watch this. The worst degree. Art? Even worse.

SPEAKER_01

Worse than art.

SPEAKER_00

Musical theater.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's up there. Yeah. Yeah, that's up there.

SPEAKER_00

That's like, you know, uh uh weaving, you know, baskets underwater.

SPEAKER_01

That's like hosting fishing charters.

SPEAKER_00

It's like for the producer.

SPEAKER_01

No, speaking of this, man, I I I have a bone to pick. You know, our producer does a great job. He has his own podcast, which is phenomenal. And he goes on fishing charters and and he he has these videos in the middle of the fucking ocean, which I can't understand. You gotta worry about a whale jumping on a boat. No, you don't. I don't want nothing to do with that. I don't I don't sharks running around, all this shit, right? I don't want nothing to do with this. But here's what I all you fishermen out there, I don't understand this aspect of it. You go out on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Okay, you want to get away from the family. No problem. Bring the family with you. You spend all of this energy catching the damn fish. What energy? Well, you gotta hook the fish, you gotta reel it in.

SPEAKER_00

So you're talking about some serious fishing. Like tuna fishing. Throw the fish back. Of course you do. Why? It's the sport of it. Fuck the sport. I worked hard for that fish. I want that fish. If I'm going to eat the fish, now I'm not a big fish eater, so if I'm gonna eat the fish, I agree. If it's big enough by standards that are put out by the laws that be, the tug is the drug.

SPEAKER_01

That's what the producer is saying.

SPEAKER_00

The tug is the drug, the tug is the drug. Yeah, and then the and you start, and you gotta pull it down just to get some slack and pull them in just a little bit and rip it up again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then so the throwback is just a waste of time then.

SPEAKER_00

Again, depends. Is the fish big enough?

SPEAKER_01

A lot of people a lot of people don't throw them back. I don't care if it's a fucking sardine. I don't care, bro. I don't I why are you working so hard to catch the goddamn fish? Tony, yeah, here you go, fishy, and throw them back.

SPEAKER_00

Because it's the sport of it. Nah. What's the use? Wait, are you just gonna eat fucking are you just gonna like let's just say you caught a giant tuna, you're gonna eat tuna for the next three months?

SPEAKER_01

Hold on. So let's say you're a cat, right? What do cats love to do? They love to hunt mice, right? You spend your time, you finally catch the motherfucking thing, and then you just let it go? No, you know. No, they eat it. Correct.

SPEAKER_00

Why do we throw the fish back? Because we have bigger than pea-sized brain. That's ridiculous. And we like to have fun, it's ridiculous. It's a sport. That's ridiculous. For you, it's ridiculous.

SPEAKER_01

Like I work so hard to catch my wife, finally get the banger, then throw her back into the world? What the hell is that? I'm doing that shit. A waste of time. Fuck this. I'm just saying, anytime you catch something and then you throw it back, I I but I'm not a fisherman, so I'm not sure. It doesn't happen often. You got me speechless.

SPEAKER_00

D, I'm so sorry.

SPEAKER_01

She knows. It took time. I told my wife so many times. Or my kids might watch this too, so I gotta be careful. I told my wife so many times, if you would have banged me on the first night, I probably wouldn't have stayed with you. But you made me work for it.

SPEAKER_00

Same as mine. Yeah, you made me work for it, man. Months on end. I was like, are you kidding me? I was not used to that.

SPEAKER_01

So I don't understand. Now here we are, 29 years later. I don't understand the fisherman aspect of it. Uh, we're throwing things back, but I mean, people seem to like it. So it is what it is. My football team loves to go fishing. I love fishing. Yeah, they put together. I love fishing.

SPEAKER_00

I go out with the producer as often as I possibly can. I've never been on his boat. Yeah, because you don't want to go on the boat. No, not because you weren't invited, because you don't want to go. Nah, I want nothing to do with it. Okay. We like acting like men.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. Would I get yelled at if I catch a fish? Like, can you imagine a guy coming up to me? Hey, Chris, you gotta throw the fish back. No, it's mine. Keeping the damn fish.

SPEAKER_00

Fuck you. Guys gonna catch it like a baby fluke. Get out of here. You can't. You gotta throw that back. You get fined, you get it. Fuck the fine. Oh, yeah. Oh, and they bored you too. They don't play games. Like, it's often that they pull up on you. They're like, hey, what do you got there? In the middle of the ocean? First off, you're not just going, you don't always just go. This guy thinks like you just go in the middle of the ocean. There are bays. We stay in the bays, or in my case, the Long Island Sound. Okay. Okay. In order to go to the ocean, I gotta take a ride all the way to fuck out to Montauk. Okay. And then go out to the other. That takes all day. We don't just go out to the ocean, right? So a lot of it is bay fishing. And you're looking for sea bass. You're looking for as little as porgies. I don't know if anyone knows what a porgies are. Does it have another name, Mr. Producer? I never even heard that term ever.

unknown

Skup.

SPEAKER_01

He can't even introduce it. He's talking about fish he doesn't even know the names of. Well, it's a porgy.

SPEAKER_00

That's that they go by other names too. The different fish have like multiple names.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my God.

SPEAKER_00

Fluke, flounder. I'm just, I'm trying, you're making this way too complicated.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just saying something simple. It's fucking great. I don't give a fuck about it.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing better than going out in the middle of the water, having that feel of being on the boat. Just being on the boat. You don't have to have a pole in the water. Again, you're making it.

SPEAKER_01

Awesome. You could come up with four million names of sharks that you don't know. Have a nice cold beer. I'm just, if I catch the guy, the damn thing, I want to keep it. End of story. All right. That's it. Okay. I don't understand. Guys going to eat C Robbs. You guys want to throw it back? Throw it back. Gonna get poison. Well, uh, at the end of the day. But yeah, man. So a parade day in Manhattan. They did a great job, I thought. A lot of people complaining about the parade.

SPEAKER_00

What was the overunder on how many people are gonna get killed? No, no one's getting killed. I said no one's getting killed. No one's gonna kill you. I made a bet with somebody last night. They said at least two people would be killed.

SPEAKER_01

That's what you fucking bet.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, he made the line. I just made the bet. My God. I said I'm making it zero.

SPEAKER_01

No one's dying, man.

SPEAKER_00

There were a couple of deaths. I don't know if you saw it, and you know, game four, game five, people wearing San Antonio's jersey not doing well.

SPEAKER_01

News flash. There's a couple deaths every single day. I mean, I don't have any. New York City's more than a few people die every day.

SPEAKER_00

We're talking about straight-up murders. You know, lighting buses on fire was a little stupid.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that's been done all over the place. Everyone does that. 80% of crime dropped during the Knicks games, which is great. That's fucking awesome. It's great. It's great. Um, little bit of a segue over to tomorrow, if you want to call it that. Uh USA. Yeah. Playing Australia tomorrow. Um teams want to know. Yeah. Uh USA beat Paraguay in a great game. Uh Australia.

SPEAKER_00

But it was how good they looked. They look great. They really looked young, fun, strong, fast. They played together a lot. Like you could just tell they were on the same page.

SPEAKER_01

I said that last week while you were watching Dorothe play her flute. Um I was all alone last week by myself. Um I watched you. Yeah, I was all by myself last week. That's fine. I got no one to talk to. No one to talk to, fuck that. You know, I got my boy from Dallas. He's afraid to come on right now because he knows I'm going to ruin him over Jalen Brunson, leaving Dallas, come to the Knicks. He's afraid. Um, but yeah, man, it's uh I'm into the World Cup. I always have been into soccer. Um, I think it's been a great tournament so so far. Uh, Messi, Hattrick, Ronaldo, they want to run him out of Portugal.

SPEAKER_00

Not only Messi, what do you got? Well, they win 3-0. He has all three goals and the over-under was not one, it was two.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Messi's ridiculous. Messi's ridiculous. Um, always has been. He gets his first World Cup last year.

SPEAKER_00

They just went into the fourth slot to win the whole thing. Well, I don't know why. Uh they won it last time. I know. So, like, but he's really all they got. They do have a great defense, and that's why they're gonna be able to push pretty far into the tournament. They have a great defense, but their offense without him is nothing.

SPEAKER_01

Sports is very funny. You know, um, Cristiano Ronaldo is an all-time great soccer player. No doubt about it. The best soccer player Portugal has ever had and ever will have. Sure. And they're ready to run him out of the country. Like, because they have they they tie one one. I mean, I I don't know his age, he's up there, 38, 39, but like, you know, your sports fans are so fickle. Right? Here's a guy that has played in six World Cup six. That's an insane number. And you tie one one and get Ronaldo out of here? Yeah. How about get everyone else out of there?

SPEAKER_00

What did I see? There was only eight teams that have won the World Cup out of all the teams. Yeah. There's only eight since it started that have won. I was able to guess I got six of them.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, it is it's it's a tournament.

SPEAKER_00

The one that got me was Uruguay.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I would have never got them. Um, you know, I think France has a tremendous opportunity to win. And Bob Bay, great game.

SPEAKER_00

They seem to be on fire just in general.

SPEAKER_01

But I'll, you know, this this USA Australia game tomorrow is a big game. For those of you watching the World Cup, watching soccer, that game's being played in Seattle, Washington, 3 p.m. Eastern time. I'm this is a bit of a homer pick, but it is what it is. Uh, I'm going with the USA in that game. Oh, you don't say. I'm going with the USA in that game. Fuck it. Uh let's go. Let's go. You I want to root for them. All right, so I'm gonna I do think they had a better team, though. Same here.

SPEAKER_00

And and I was gonna, I didn't think you were gonna give out a pick. I was gonna give out USA also.

SPEAKER_01

All right, so there you go. There you go.

SPEAKER_00

We'll both on the same thing.

SPEAKER_01

Um, hockey season comes to a conclusion. Congratulations to the Carolina Hurricanes. They finally get over the hump. They do. And you know what? I I I've I've been critical of hockey in terms of where it ranks in this country because it is fourth. Um, they are making strides and it is getting better. No doubt. Credit to the Carolina Hurricanes for keeping it all together. Sure. Because they just missed out. There was a year they lost to the Rangers when the Rangers went to the Stanley Cup Finals. They had a hard time getting over Florida when Florida won the Stanley Cup Finals. Um, they kept their coach there. They did. They kept the core of their team there. They did. They made some good trades. They got the kid, Keandre Miller, from the Rangers, which I you're the Rangers. How the fuck you let that guy go?

SPEAKER_00

He just dominated. He looked great. And the Rangers had him. Listen, uh Vegas. I was surprised because I listen, I've watched this Vegas team throughout the year. They are they played their best hockey. They did. Right at the end of it. When Tortarella took over, and I can't believe that they're not bringing him back.

SPEAKER_01

Agreed.

SPEAKER_00

That is what he do wrong. Like, like disgusting. You know what they said he did? That he didn't pull Carter Hart and put Aiden Hill the because Hill already won a Stanley Cup for them. Uh they they you know, that was a big part of why. And and the other side, of course, they pull Freddie Anderson and put in Bussey, who by the way is lives not far away. Brought up right around the corner from me where I live. Um and and the kid was absolutely lights out. He, you know, 28-year-old rookie. They can't call him a rookie, but he's a 28-year-old rookie playing the first hockey played in the Stanley Cup, basically.

SPEAKER_01

But Las Vegas, so they fired a head coach Cassidy, I believe it was.

SPEAKER_00

Correct, and bring in Tortarella.

SPEAKER_01

Bring in Tortarella, who I believe wins seven games in a row, and then you go on a Stanley Cup run and you lose in game six to a team that was the better hockey. Better team, no doubt. Carolina was the better hockey.

SPEAKER_00

They were faster. They I mean they were just better.

SPEAKER_01

They were the better team, no doubt. And that's not good enough. You don't want to bring him back. So who you got, like if I'm and Las Vegas has a good product. Don't get me wrong, they do. I'm my shitting on him. But you're gonna fire your coach, you're gonna bring in a guy who did a good job. And Tortorella's been a good NHL head coach. He's won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay. Um, he got, I think he got to a finals with the Rangers or the Eastern Conference Finals. Um I think he's got one of the best records in the playoffs history. I mean, and that's not good enough.

SPEAKER_00

Not good enough.

SPEAKER_01

I don't understand. Who are you bringing in? That's good enough. That's what I said. I said, I hope you guys get Patrick Watt. Yeah, there you go. Like, like who's better than Tortorella right now? You guys weren't happy with Cassidy. So stupid. Uh uh, so here's another thing, and this is where I was going. Like, credit to the Carolina Hurricanes because they hadn't made the Stanley Cup finals before this year. They constantly lost in either the second round or the conference finals.

SPEAKER_00

And they went all the way 20, 20 somewhat years ago, 21 years ago.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but I'm talking about recently with this with Brenda Moore there, right? So here's a team that lost in the conference finals multiple times, lost in the second round multiple times. You kept it together, you built, you got over the hump finally. And you now you got a team that was two wins away from winning the cup. And you say, I'm not letting you know.

SPEAKER_00

And you just brought him in. The guy's only been there for what a total of 20 some odd games.

SPEAKER_01

What and you know something? So again, a little jumping around. And the player said what a phenomenal job he did. Jumping around a little, right? You got the guy Mike Brown from the Knicks. I mean, they win a championship, but now it's unfair. This guy took the job, and it was you either get to the NBA finals, or we don't know if we're keeping you either.

SPEAKER_00

Because what's the point when they got rid of Thibodeau? I thought it was such a mistake. I did too. I'm like I did as well. I just got you deeper than and Mike Brown came in and he did a great job. He he drove the limo like he was a Secret Service agent.

SPEAKER_01

Another great NBA head coach. Um, he was with Sacramento. You see, and this is this is the the time that we live in. You know, he goes, he does an interview and he he calls out De'Aaron Fox for making a very stupid play. Um he gets fired two days later. So you can't go on and live and and and call out a player, which there's ways to do it and there's ways to not. What happened to this world? And then De'Aaron Fox plays one of the all-time dumbest finals in the history of the world. And so you're proven right both ends. You're proven right that you're a hell of a coach. Hell of a coach. You're proven right that the player you basically called a moron in a nice way is a moron. He's a moron. Right? You're proven right both ways, and that is why teams like Sacramento will never win. Yep. You had the guy, you had him, you had him, and you didn't allow him to coach. I don't get it. And all intents and purposes, what the Knicks are saying, you know, to a man now, they they won, so it's Kumbaya. We everyone loves everyone, right? Sure. Winning brings that out. But what they've said to a man is hey, he took all of our ideas and and and utilized them. He didn't just shun us, he took his our ideas of what we thought we wanted to do, and he put it into his game plan. Sure. And he made that's a coach.

SPEAKER_00

I loved what the the players said about him afterwards. Absolutely. Like they he he coached to their talents. Yep, he doesn't have a system, which is what Thibodeau wanted them to do was this is my system, play within my system. Whereas Mike Brown came in and said, Look, you do this well, so I'm gonna utilize you like this. And we're gonna do this, we're gonna, and really kind of just worked all the personalities, all the different talents, and put it all together. I mean, I I don't think there's anything I could say that should have been done better. Everything was done so well.

SPEAKER_01

My problem with this is like if I'm the owner of the Sacramento Kings, right? I am very upset with the guy who fired Mike Brown. Like, who came to you with the decision? Because the owner doesn't make that decision. The general managers say, Hey, sure, I want to make this decision. Then your owner has to sign off on it, of course. But who came, like that guy just won a championship with the team that hasn't won a title in 53 years? Yeah. He just went and did it, and we got rid of him. How many titles does he have now? No, that's it. Well, he's he's got assistance. He he had uh titles with Golden State. He won the and he and he went to the finals when LeBron back in 07. That's right. But here's a guy that just went and did it. We had him. And that was my point about Carolina, right? Like you when you know you got something good, only one team wins. It's fucking hard to win. It's hard to win. So credit to Carolina.

SPEAKER_00

Well, they say the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy.

SPEAKER_01

I believe that. I'll give you that. Yeah, I will give you that. That's a tough trophy. That's a tough trophy to win, man. That's a tough trophy. But credit to Carolina, yeah. They stayed with Brenda Moore, they stayed with Brenda Moore after playoff failures. They knew they were close, and they're gonna be able to get it.

SPEAKER_00

Brenda Moore uh held the cup for them when they won the Stanley Cup uh back in what was it, 06, 07?

SPEAKER_01

And then now, now to your point, a half hour ago, you know, you look at what Jalen Brunson did taking a pay cut. Now, everyone's gonna want to take a pay cut. Me personally, I said this. I I would never take a pay cut.

SPEAKER_00

No, I and guys Especially to the extent of 13 million, something like that.

SPEAKER_01

If you came to me and you said, hey, we need you to take 20 million less, and there's four guys we want to give an extra 5 million to on your team, I would do that pay cut without a question. Without a question, you're giving it to my teammates, I would do that pay cut. If you came to me saying you want to, hey, take 113 million less in New York where they tax you up the ass, I'm not sure I would do that.

SPEAKER_00

For players to be named. I'm not sure I would do that. Right. They're not even telling you who they're getting.

SPEAKER_01

Jalen Brunson, you're a legend. You did something that a lot of people, including me, was he in on any of the I'll tell you the truth. Like, I don't buy your bullshit. I don't buy your bullshit. You ain't taking a $113 million pay cut.

SPEAKER_00

You're not doing it. If I know it's coming to me later, like, listen, if you think they said we need your $113 million to go get players and you're never getting it back, they put it on the back end of another contract. That's where it's gonna come in. But you don't know you're not gonna get hurt. You don't know you're not gonna get hurt.

SPEAKER_01

You're betting on yourself, you're betting on yourself, you're betting on a lot. That's I'll give you 20 million, 30 million, even that, and I'm not sure. If I was Derek Rose, I wouldn't have done it. You got LeBron James basically telling the Lakers he wants a max contract, guys a billionaire.

unknown

It's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

But Jalen Brunson, you're a legend. You did what a lot of New York Knicks players could not do.

SPEAKER_00

Could Godan is the greatest of all time.

SPEAKER_01

He especially in the Knicks. And yeah, he he he wins another one. He's by Jeter. Even though Jeter has five, he have two. Um I'd put him ahead. If he wins another one, yes, yes, yes, I would too. What he did and the niche drought, dropping 45 in a closeout game, carrying the team, credit to you. Congratulations to the New York Knicks, congratulations to the city of New York. I am a fan, but I am not the lunatic fan that watched. I used to be when I was younger. Who's the greatest point guard in in basketball right now? The best point guard? The best point guard. Luca's pretty good, man.

SPEAKER_00

See, now this is an argument I'm having with my friends. Luke is pretty good. Right. So I'm like, Jalen is right now the best in the league. I said, Luke, I said, no, I I agree. Luca's the best. And they all said, nope, Jalen Bruns. I would take him over Luca. I mean like, come on, let's not be stupid. Is Steph still considered a point guard? He's like a hybrid shooting guard. He's also I'm not building a team around Steph Curry right now. He's too old.

SPEAKER_01

And look, we're just going a little long, we're gonna end it, but you know, we could talk about this next week. I believe Luca is probably the best point guard in basketball. He is. I don't believe the Knicks win with Luca. It's like with the same players around him. Yeah, I don't believe they win because I don't know if he's got the temperament to make the shots and he don't have uh he has the balls to shoot the ball. Even listen, you know why I was. I thought Jalen was doing too much. I listen on game five, I'm sitting there yelling at TV helping the ball. No, right. No, I wasn't saying that. No, you you know, I'm saying help him. You're right.

SPEAKER_00

They just they're helping him, they're expecting him.

SPEAKER_01

He got to the point where he knew they didn't have it that night, and he had to carry them over the finish line and he did that. Now, credit to him in game four. He shoots the shot. And this is what we've all said about LeBron James when he passes the ball. I made the right basketball play. Fuck you. Okay. Shoot, you're the best player in the world. Shoot, shoot the ball. He shot the shot, he missed it. I live with it. OG, all-time great play. But the best player on that team is supposed to shoot the ball. He knew the assignment, he shot the ball, and I respect it. And the fact that he missed it, I don't even care.

SPEAKER_00

He shot the shot. And if you watch that player, OG was so ready for it. He he's the one who threw it in and inbounded it and just went straight to the hoop, beelined it, right? And they were through two other guys up there, three of them with fingers, people trying to block it away and just that one fingertip above everyone.

SPEAKER_01

So, hey, it's good to be a Knicks fan. Hey, we get to enjoy the summer. Unfortunately, half the population in New York got to go back to rooting for the Mets. Waste of time. And then that same population gets to root for the Jets in the football season. Waste of time. But the other half of the New Yorkers, you got the Yankees who are in first place right now. And hopefully there's another ticket tape parade four or five, four months from now. Um, hope you enjoy listening.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think the Dodgers are beatable, but they're probably not.

SPEAKER_01

Well, we could discuss that as we go. Hope you enjoy listening to the Bet Big Talk Loud Podcast. Be safe, have fun.

SPEAKER_00

Let's go out there and make some money.
