Bet Big Talk Loud Podcast with Chris Hodge and JR

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to the Bet Big Talk Loud Podcast for Friday, July 24th. I'm Chris Hodge. I got JR with me. Haven't seen JR in a week. It's been a good week. It's been a good week, man. It's been a good week. Get away from you for a little bit. Sure you feel the same. Lots to talk about this week, but we gotta uh it hurts my heart, man, to talk about this dude again, but we have to because it's about 1.40 Eastern time when we're recording this. It broke earlier this morning. LeBron James to the 76ers, $8 million deal. I'll get to that in a moment. I was watching first take today, Stephen A. Smith, and um Stephen A. Smith said that he was shocked. Right. That LeBron James went to the Philadelphia 76ers. I unless you've been living under a rock for this man's career, why would you be shocked?

SPEAKER_00

The only way I'd be shocked is if he went to a team in last place. Correct. I mean, this is like such his MO. I'm wondering if we can ever get through one podcast without talking about LeBron James. Yeah, it's like it's insane. And he loves that. Of course he loves it.

SPEAKER_01

He's an egomaniac. But look, from a basketball perspective, great move. It's a it's the the move he was supposed to make because they're better than Miami, uh, they're better than Cleveland. I here's the thing, you know, I I knew the the the relationship with the Lakers ran its course, right? No doubt. They were both unhappy with each other, it seemed. You and I are not in the locker rooms, we're not in the front office meetings. But if you're going to take eight million dollars, why not? Just take it with the Lakers and allow them to go build a team and win there. Where your son plays, where you're happy to be, where the weather is perfect. How about Philadelphia weather's in February and January and November? Much different than the weather in LA. Nothing he's not used to. He grew up in Cleveland. I I understand that, but he he just spent, you know, he spent four years of his life in Miami. Miami, LA. Four years in LA.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know why anyone would want to leave LA other than the taxes. I mean, I don't know. LA, for me, the weather, it doesn't get much better than that. I mean, it's great. It's year-round, just phenomenal. You made a comment. You said they're better than Miami. They're better than Miami. Are they gonna be better than Miami? Absolutely. Some of the moves that they've made. Yeah, absolutely. They're gonna have a sick starting five.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, who? Philadelphia? Not Miami. Philadelphia got too much. Philly as well.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not I'm not arguing. I mean, but Philadelphia still. You can't sit here and say they're better. Oh no, I can. Yeah, they're better. I think it's gonna be close.

SPEAKER_01

They're better. I mean, look, it's starting five. Maxie is, you know, a superstar ascending. Obviously, Jalen Brown. I'm a big I am a big Jalen Brown fan of the bar. I I love the guy in terms of his basketball IQ, basketball team.

SPEAKER_00

You were pissed off about the trade.

SPEAKER_01

I did not. Well, I made no sense. They didn't get value for what Jalen Brown brings to a basketball team, number one. And I feel Jalen Brown didn't get respected for what he did without Jason Tatum.

SPEAKER_00

No doubt.

SPEAKER_01

But the funny thing about this trade is Jalen Brown kind of wanted his own team. At least that's what we were being told.

SPEAKER_00

Not anymore. A little overshadowed. He just went from Batman to Robin.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe Robin Robin. Yeah, pretty much. Tyrese Maxie is very good. And you got Edgecomb there as well. But you know, here's the key to them. Uh Joel Embiid. Yeah, but he's only played. Here's the thing about Embiid, right? He hasn't played. He's played 96 games in three years. Now, when Joel Embiid plays, he's one of the best big men in the NBA. No question. When he's healthy and when he plays. But now you're gonna have LeBron James, who's gonna be 42 in December. That's insane. Um there now their title odds, and you didn't know this, right? Because you haven't looked at this, right? I have not. Before the offseason began, their the NBA title odds for the Philadelphia 76ers was 55 to 1. Wow. It's 10 to 1 now. Wow.

SPEAKER_00

5,500 to plus 1,000.

unknown

Wow.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Jalen Brown and LeBron James. That is the thing about the NBA. Yeah, I mean, 55 to 1 is basically you have no shot. And you had two players, and all of a sudden you're one of the favorites. Now you're you're up there. That's that's basketball.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it is. That's what basketball can do. They got five starters, man. You make a couple of moves, and all of a sudden you change your whole team, the whole dynamic. Look what Steph look what Curry did in Golden State. Absolutely. They were the absolute bottom of the league for decades, never even spoken about.

SPEAKER_01

Drafted well. Drafted well. I mean, they hit on draft picks, and Steph Curry is an all-time generational talent and the greatest shooter of all time.

SPEAKER_00

Just saying, changed the whole dynamic of that team. Like overnight. Overnight. Overnight. Absolutely. Look, look at home. Look at what Jalen Brunson did for the Knicks. There's a team that's never won. Look at what LeBron James did for Cleveland. Absolutely. We're a nothing organization.

SPEAKER_01

That is the thing about basketball. You had one or two elite players, and look, LeBron James, I am not a LeBron James fan. Never had been, never will be. Same here. He is an elite generational.

SPEAKER_00

That gave me a reason not to watch basketball.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. I mean, literally. The greatest flopper of all time. The flop rule is because of him.

SPEAKER_00

He could just go over to England and play in the English Premier League when this is all done.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you know, LeBron James to me, and again, I'm not going to talk about what he does on a basketball court because you can't. You get laughed out of conversations, right? He is an all-time great basketball player. But he is just one of the dumbest freaking guys in terms of like, you know, did you see this interview we did about him playing golf now? No. Obviously, LeBron James is African-American, right? And he says, um, well, I want to play golf because I want kids who look like me to understand that they can play golf as well. I guess this guy doesn't know Tiger Woods exists.

SPEAKER_00

Where was he for 30 years? I mean, are you kidding me? Buddy, that's long gone. But Tiger did that. He obviously hasn't been to golf courses lately either. I mean, it's great to see. You see everybody at the golf course now.

SPEAKER_01

It's amazing to me.

SPEAKER_00

It's unbelievable. I love it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I mean, well, listen, it seems like the only sport that's really priced out the African Americans is hockey. Hockey.

SPEAKER_00

Hockey's like an old boy, all white boy club. I mean, it's it's a money club. I mean, even the white kids. Listen, no one played hockey where I grew up. It's tough. It's not, you know, I didn't grow up with money. So it was we played street hockey in our in our shoes. I always say putting that out front.

SPEAKER_01

My son played hockey, he played at a high level, and I always say hockey is a license to steal money from idiot parents.

SPEAKER_00

My goodness. It really is. Not even just the equipment, all the lessons, all the ice time, all the leagues, all the traveling, the hotels, the expenses, insane amount of money.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I I It's a college degree. Well, my son was playing. I figured it out. I used to be a big hockey fan, believe it or not. And um, but my son playing, and I was watching the talent of kids that played, and I realized these are not athletes, right? Even though people will say, yo, skating is the toughest thing. Skating is learned.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, but still it's athletics. You can't tell me, but it's not athletic.

SPEAKER_01

No, okay, but you have to learn how to skate. Yes. If someone, I don't care, you could be the best athlete in the world. If someone doesn't invest thousands upon thousands into you learning how to skate, sure, you're not going to learn how to skate. And I remember watching a Rangers game, and I was looking down, I'm like, those aren't the best players in the world. Like 80% of the guys on this team just had mommy and daddy have enough money to keep them playing. Absolutely. And the best at the better athletes just fell off.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you got to think, I mean, when it when think about a kid who has never played hockey before and then figures it out at like 15, like I could be a great hockey player, like you just said, hasn't skated before. Yeah. If you're not on the ice at three years old, you're not going to be an E NHL. Yeah. And then you gotta have Because you gotta skate like a, you know, you gotta have daddy making backroom deals.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that's the way it goes. Um, I won't say that again. Um I saw what he was doing, the moms, you know, the moms. Uh, but no, hey, uh, you know, LeBron James, he was free to do whatever he wanted. It was the first time in his career he's a true free agent. Um, he chose to go to Philadelphia, which is a loaded team. I think Philadelphia and the New York Knicks are the two best teams. I think if I was, again, it's his business. He's allowed to do whatever we want he wants. We live in a free country. I don't know why, I don't know what happened. I thought going back to Cleveland was the right move. No question. Right? We talked about this. Yeah, I thought going back to Cleveland was the right move.

SPEAKER_00

I thought it was a given. I mean, I would have laid three to one.

SPEAKER_01

Thought that was the right move, but hey, you know, the NBA gets fascinating, and um A06 is Knicks, six is Celtics is gonna be with as deep as Philly is, he doesn't have to play the minutes that he would have had to play in LA.

SPEAKER_00

No, uh, but I think that had a lot to do with it too.

SPEAKER_01

Agreed, but listen, your son is in LA and the only reason he waited till he got his contract, at least. He did, and but the only reason why his son is still in LA is because LeBron James got him drafted. I say this all the time. If Bronny James was Bronny Smith, no one knows who the guy is. Okay, would not be in the NBA.

SPEAKER_00

He's probably selling hush puppies at the stadium.

SPEAKER_01

But you could have stayed in Philly with your uh in uh LA with your family, could have played with your son, you could have signed for 8 million. I think he's such an egomaniac. The the um reports that came out that he was so like bothered by the Lakers when Kobe Bryant was ending his career, got a huge contract, and the Lakers did not offer LeBron James that same contract they offered Kobe Bryant. And I don't understand why this guy doesn't understand that to the Lakers fans who are very knowledgeable, you're not Kobe Bryant.

SPEAKER_00

No, not only that, they need money if you want to win next year. You can't just give it away to a guy who's on his gut literally most of his body out the door.

SPEAKER_01

I think to me, and and again, a lot of the Lakers fans out there, because I did this thing on the Lakers fans a couple weeks ago, and a lot of them wrote in saying, yo, we're happy to see him go. Say they gotta be relieved. Very, very it was it outnumbered. The guy, the emails that were happy to see him go far outnumbered the guys that were calling me an asshole, right? No doubt. Far far outweighted. But I I still think it's gotta be a slap in the face that you're gonna go play for someone else for 8 million. Why couldn't you have just done that for us?

SPEAKER_00

And they would- I think that's a slap in the face. They easily would have paid him that. They would have given him more than that. They would have given him, they would have given him 12, 15. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_01

They would have given him double. They would have given him double, and they would have been able to go. So again, LeBron James just does whatever he wants to do, and it is what it is, and we talk about him because it's LeBron James.

SPEAKER_00

It's like he goes down, goes home, probably has that discussion with his wife. Like, what dumbass move can I do this week to get everyone talking about?

SPEAKER_01

To get everyone pissed off.

SPEAKER_00

You know, I mean, it's like that old saying, you know, uh any PR is good pay PR, right? I mean doesn't matter what they're saying as long as they're saying your name.

SPEAKER_01

100%. Um, so that just broke today, Friday morning, LeBron to the 76ers. Title R just dropped from 55 to 10 to 1 uh in the course of a month. Uh good job by the Sixers. It's a great offseason. You got Jalen Brown for Paul George, which is ridiculous. I don't care about the number one draft picks. And because that that's probably gonna be worthless down the road. You they're gonna be drafting 25 or below.

SPEAKER_00

That's what I was gonna say. They'll be in the 20s.

SPEAKER_01

But great job by the Sixers. Um, and hey, well done. And it makes it interesting.

SPEAKER_00

You know, again, the the uh definitely no runaway for New York this year in the East.

SPEAKER_01

No, not at all. And if you think about what the NBA just did, we're five Saturdays away from college football. Five Saturdays. Wow.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Blowing my mind with that.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Uh the Hall of Fame game, I believe, is on August 6th. So what's that? That's around the point. Two weeks from yesterday. Yeah. Okay, and here we are, end of July. Football camps are opening, and everyone is talking about the NBA. That's a good job by the NBA. That's a good job by the NBA. That's a good job by the NBA. Um, I saw this, uh, I saw this thing on Instagram the other day about Resorts World in uh New York City. Have you been there? I have not. It's the uh casino right outside Aqueduct. Yeah. And I have not been there, I have not stepped foot in. I actually have only driven by it a couple times, so I don't even really know what it looks like. Me neither. Okay. But I see a report, right? And this shit just drives me up a wall. And I'm gonna tie it back to sports gambling, right? So the report was that Resorts World in the last 11 weeks has profited, profited $320 million just off slots.

SPEAKER_00

Come on.

SPEAKER_01

Just just off slots. We're gonna put the producers gonna put the picture up. And then I love I love it. Like, yo, these casinos, these casinos are great, man. They're you guys who do the the marketing for casinos, yeah, well done. Tip my hat. You guys are fucking awesome. They they have this guy throwing dice, and they got every got a guy in a bow tie. We're putting the picture up. We got guy in a bow tie stand, everyone at the dice table smiling, the dealer who's watching over smiling, which never happens. God forbid you win. They got a frown on their face. And and what they do is they like, hey, come in, come in and win. You can win at craps, you can win at the slots.

SPEAKER_00

Look at Blackjack. Baccarat, lowest odds for the house.

SPEAKER_01

And then we got idiots, idiots walking around. When you walk into a sports book, I will have this argument with any moron out there. I will actually bring myself down to the moron. Okay, you walk into a casino, you play any house game, the odds are against you. Everyone, everyone. Great. If you walk into a casino with $10,000 and you put it on the Buffalo Bills to beat whoever the fuck, the Houston Texans in week one, you have a 50-50 shot.

SPEAKER_00

Yes and no. 50-50 chance that you're gonna win that game. Yes. Know that your odds are the same because every time you lose, you're playing 10% of the games.

SPEAKER_01

I'm talking one game. Okay. I'm talking one game. Okay. You walk into a casino with 10,000, you have just as good of a shot at winning as the house does. Just as good of a shot. Now, if you put, if you bet, now if we get into the mathematics of it, if you put 10,000 on the Bills and then you put 10,000 on the Cowboys, you just cut your odds down immensely. Huge. Right. Because now you've got to win both, or at least go one-on-one.

SPEAKER_00

Even if you go one and one, you're losing money.

SPEAKER_01

Correct. So but I'm just talking one for one. The sports wagering odds are the best odds that you have to make money. No question about it.

SPEAKER_00

No question about it. You just you have to have a systematic way to be able to go after them and be smart about it. Correct. So, you know, you you can't be busting your whole, you know, bankroll uh on a single game. That's just downright stupid. Okay. And you got to be smart about your increases. So you want to get a certain number of network, you know, whether it's wins or dollar amounts, percentage of bankroll under your belt before you make the next increase. And you also have to stop, have stop losses in place, right? We talk about this all the time. Just like in the stock market. If you're smart, you have stop losses in on all your equity positions, so that if your stock drops, you're out. You're not watching it plummet saying, oh my God, why didn't my broker call me? No, it's it's done. It's already triggered. Same thing in sports betting. If you lose a certain number of games in a row or you give back a certain amount of money of your bankroll, you have to lower your unit size. This is just, you know, sports betting 101. Sure. A simple lesson. Now, the problem is that most of you are doing this alone. You're not talking to your spouse about it. You're not even talking to most of your friends about it. This is a world within something that you're in on your on your own. With us, you have not only somebody that understands it way better than anybody else that that's watching this, um, but we've got the voice of reason. We're gonna tell you what you should and should not be doing. That that's what separates what we do from anything else. The fact that systems that work, we games that win, and the voice of reason, which is so big.

SPEAKER_01

Also, we're not emotional. No, we let the numbers take place. Like, how many times gamblers out there, and you guys know you do this, uh, let's say you're on a young football team. I always bring up Phillip Rivers, I always bring this guy up because I had a customer that refused to bet any game Phillip Rivers was a part of. Because 10 years prior, true story, 10 years prior, Phillip Rivers threw a pick six that cost him a cover, and this guy will not bet Phillip Rivers. And I'm like, well, you know, what happened in I don't know, 2012 really has no bearing on what's gonna happen on 2019. Nothing. But what do I know? Like so a lot of gamblers out there are very emotional.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, they also have teams they won't bet with and against, right? Yes. Your brother is one of those guys. I know, I know. That's the truth. I mean, and we got another guy in the office. We'll just he talk so Minnesota has destroyed me. You can tell by the voice who it is.

SPEAKER_01

Tell you a funny story about the Miami Dolphins. I'm not gonna mention who hooked it up or what it was, but true story. Um, through one of my media contacts, when they were playing a playoff game in a very cold environment, they actually gave me the phone number to call in to the conference call with the teams.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Uh prior to the game. Yeah, remember that? Yeah. A couple days before the game was played, and they were just like, hey, Chris, use this number, call in the city. Didn't didn't really want to say it, but you can't help yourself. I didn't want to say the team name. Um, well done, yes, laugh. Why? Good job. Why are we not saying who it is? Because there's no reason to, but anyway, since it's the cats out of the bed because we can't keep our mouth shut, not a big deal. Um, so yes, it was it was that game for the playoffs. And um, you know, on that conference call, all they're saying is, boy, we've never played in weather like this. And uh the home team is saying, yeah, this isn't it's never been this cold, but we we used to cold weather an hour ahead, no big thing. So I'm walking around be like, ah, hey, everyone, we're going against Miami, and you're boy, I can't do it.

SPEAKER_00

It's like, what are you talking about? I mean, seriously, you're an idiot. I mean, listen, I don't like it when I get something on my desk that says I've got to go against Pittsburgh, but you got to do it. Like, I have no emotion. There's no Homer inside of me that says I can't bet against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If it's money, money's money. It's all black and white. When it's on paper, it's all black and white, it all turns to green.

SPEAKER_01

Man, no allegiance. You know zero. I'm wearing a Knicks hat. I had no, I did not believe. I said this on the podcast, I said they have zero shot. I thought they'd lose to Boston in the second round. Philadelphia took care of them. And and and part of that, and I'm gonna be quite honest, part of that was the fan in me. Sure. Now I don't bet the NBA. So I'm allowed to be that person. We have other guys here who are great with the NBA. Yes. Right? But I'm sitting there and I'm like, sooner or later, the the wheels are gonna fall off because that's what happened for 53 straight years.

SPEAKER_00

That'd be like if the Jets went on a run this year and we're never 11 and 4 to start, you know, by the week 15, 16. You know what's so funny about that?

SPEAKER_01

And everyone out there who is a fan of a team, you know this is true. You could be the Cleveland Browns, you could be the New York Jets or any other friggin' ridiculous franchise that has tortured their fan their Buffalo Bills. Right, but at least they've had success. I know.

SPEAKER_00

I should throw that in.

SPEAKER_01

If the Jets were somehow sitting at 11 and 4, you would have Jet fans walking around like this, like looking up. Pianos gonna fall on my head. Like they wouldn't even be talking to each other. They'd be so afraid of, oh, here it comes. What's gonna happen? Geno Smith is gonna blow out his ACL, Garrett Wilson gonna tear it a killing. Like, what could possibly go wrong? All the Jet fans would be doing that.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. Every one of them. Every one of them. It's so insane, just like the expectation of a Jets fan. Like, it's it's really mind-blowing. Like, why are you even a fan? This is your expectation. Why are you so sworn to this team?

SPEAKER_01

And I'm a little I'm a little closer to it, obviously, being from New York, but I believe see see in New York you have multiple teams for multiple sports, right? But it's generally Giants, Yankees, Mets, Jets.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

So look, there are crossovers. You can get your Giants fan with a Mets fan, and you can get your Jets fan with a Yankees fan, right? But those are actually rare, very rare, right? Like they're rare, like James. Which is weird.

SPEAKER_00

Guys listening in Kansas don't get it. But they don't understand. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Right? It's like a German Jew. It's like they're just a rare. They're out there. Just rare. Um like a German Jewish. But but the Met Jet fans, to me, are the most tortured fans in sports. Now, the Cleveland Brown fans might say otherwise. The Buffalo Bill fans and the Buffalo Sabre fans certainly have a leg to stand on with that argument because the Bills have been tortured, right?

SPEAKER_00

They must have their wives must tell them what to do at home. They like totally different type of life.

SPEAKER_01

They just been kicked in dicks on the city.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, totally different. Totally different. Totally different.

SPEAKER_01

The Mets Jets fan is the most tortured of people. Like, I when I die, I want to go up to God and be like, what the Mets and Jet fans do to you? What'd they do to you? Like, tell me, why are you torturing them?

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna go up and thank them and be like, I don't know why you made me a Steeler fan. I mean, I really don't. But he's gonna be like, Yeah, we gave you a garbage can when you were seven years old with the Pittsburgh Steelers on it. I was like, I was in, sold, got that with a blanket, right?

SPEAKER_01

Never looked back. The Minnesota Viking fans are a tortured group. Oh my god. The Timberwolves and the Minnesota Wild.

SPEAKER_00

And you know, at least the Timberwolves haven't been around long enough to be as tortured.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you had the Minneapolis Lakers used to be there. And then what happens? One of the most famous organizations ever goes to LA, leaves Minnesota. Why would you do that? I don't know. I don't know. But man, I'll tell you, the Mets Jets, that's a tortured franchise or a tortured uh group of fans. Uh obviously the Browns are tortured. A lot of fan bases out there are tortured. But, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I always blamed, I mean, I I've always blamed ownership. That was me. But now you kind of can't anymore, at least even with the Mets. I mean, they're they're spending, they're doing everything they can to change. Oh, no.

SPEAKER_01

I blame, I blame David Stearns. Oh, I absolutely. I blame David Stearns. And not to go off on a Mets rant here, I don't know why you have a first baseman. And by the way, not saying anything new. This has been talked about ad nauseum for months now. But you have a first baseman who produces, who wants to be here, who plays in the bright lights of New York. Very hard to do. Very. Very hard to do. And was asking for $30 million a year, which in today's market is not a crazy amount of money. Agreed. Peter Lonzo earned his dollars, and you let him go, and you let Mark Vientos, you sign Polanco for $20 million a year. Makes no sense. David Stearns, what this guy did to the Mets is among one of the worst all-time jobs. But the payroll is so high. Yeah, well, that's the expectations, right? You have a $375 million payroll, you're in last place. The Dodgers have a $375 million payroll.

SPEAKER_00

They go to the World Series every year. Every year. And they're dominant in every game all year long. And I'll be able to do it.

SPEAKER_01

They're playing each other tonight. So the Mets in the You know what game I can't wait for? We're months, uh, it's a month and a half away from this. I cannot wait. I might try to get into the building that night because I just want to see it. I cannot wait for Peter Lonzo to come back to City Field. I believe it's the first couple weeks of September. I am telling you right now, there will be more Peter Lonzo jerseys in that building, both and Orioles than any other guy. And you can combine them.

SPEAKER_00

I'm almost going to bet he's going to go yard too.

SPEAKER_01

I hope he does. He is. Yo, Peter Alonzo represented the New York Mets with class dignity, never caused a problem, produced on the field. Awesome guy. You know this whole thing. Derek Just said this. This whole thing with analytics, right? Yeah, it's great. You can put them into the computer screen and see this, that, or the other bullshit nonsense, but you have to have the temperature of the player to perform in New York. Definitely. And the analytics do not tell you that.

SPEAKER_00

Analytics give you numbers, they don't give you character. They don't give you what's, you know, presented to the fan base and you know, the person that's getting up to the plate, who you got to deal with in the clubhouse. You know, none of that is gonna be given to you in a math equation. It just isn't. Just isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

So I'm not an analytics guy. I hate them. I I think they've ruined. I believe the analytics have ruined sports. You know what? I'm gonna tell you why. Okay. Because when you look at analytics, right? So let's take it from a basketball perspective, right? Okay, great. So you could shoot a uh uh a three-point shot. Uh if you step one foot in, it's a two-point shot. So the analytical minds are okay, why would you shoot a 22-foot shot that counts for two points when you could shoot a 23-point shot that counts for three? That somewhat makes sense, right? Okay, however, it's a more difficult shot. And I'm not saying you should step in and get a 22-foot shot, but the difference of making a one dribble shoot 18 or 19 foot shot with no one guarding you is much different than making a contested three. No doubt about it. And that's the part of the analytics, it's just three versus two. That's the part of the analytics I don't like. Um, going for it now on fourth down in football. You I hate it. It's crazy.

SPEAKER_00

I hate it. It's crazy. It's insane to me. It's that crazy. You took a class of people, because coaches in the NFL, I mean, they were as conservative as conservative got, right? I'm just talking about the way they played the game. Sure. Always. It was always about, you know, inches versus yards. And, you know, I mean, we used to fourth and inches, uh, even on the opponent's 40, you still pumped it in a lot. In most cases, yep. Now you don't, you just, you know, it's gone. It's completely gone. It is, and that guy is a dinosaur, and the team wants to fire him if if he's kicking it on fourth and inches. Because he doesn't believe in his offense.

SPEAKER_01

So you gotta understand the game. Right. Every game is different. Like you know, if I have a dominant defense, okay, maybe I'm willing to put them on the field in a worse situation. Every situation, every team is different. All I'm saying is, like, to your point, 30 years ago, you never saw teams going for it in their own territory.

SPEAKER_00

Ever.

SPEAKER_01

You might saw a team like we call it no man's land. You're at the 39-yard line, you're going in, instead of punt, you go for it on fourth down because you're not going to kick the now. If a guy misses a 56-yard field goal, you're like, what the hell just happened? What happened? Yeah, why'd he miss it? Now the edge is Scott Norwood. Sorry, Buffalo fans. Scott Norwood missed a 46-yard field goal to win a Super Bowl. If you miss a 46-yard field goal now, you are useless to your team. Oh, you're gone, man. You you can't have a job.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, 50's the new 40.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Is really what it is. I feel like 60's the new 40. I mean, you got guys.

SPEAKER_01

These guys are lining up, but Orban from the Cowboys, this guy lines up for 58 yarder, and you're shocked if he misses it.

SPEAKER_00

And it's not because of lack of leg. It's it's always a hook or or a pull.

SPEAKER_01

So we're gonna get to some week one matchups in the NFL. I I believe it's a fascinating week one. We got some time for it, but I do just want to say salong to the World Cup. Now, the World Cup final to me wasn't a great game. It wasn't. Spain kicked the fuck out of that team.

SPEAKER_00

Should have won that game 3-0. All over the field. Two two goals, I think it was. Two taken off. Well, two.

SPEAKER_01

Oh the one was definitely um It was definitely offsides. It was well, no, I was gonna say the the one where the guy stepped on the guy's foot in the penalty area. Yes. I thought that should have been this. This offside shit, you know, and by the way, you know, I want to bring this up before we get into week one. I I'm gonna give you an idea. Because you know I come up with these ideas, some you like, some you don't. And boy, I I know the the purest in soccer are going to hate this idea, but sports changes. It does, right? We have different rules that this running clock in soccer drives me up a wall because you have a chip in the ball now that can sense when a pubic care touches the ball. But when you get to where they need injury time, no one has any idea of how much time should be put on the clock. The ref does. No, it's not to a science, like you see a guy get hurt rolling around on the ground.

SPEAKER_00

That's what I like about it.

SPEAKER_01

That they add time, like so. What I would do, first of all, this drove me nuts in the World Cup. It would be like the 88th minute, and all the World Cup announcers said this. They said there's two minutes left. No, there's not. No, you got at least three for the hydrates. Right, so there's five minutes left before so it was every World Cup, you got to go to 93 minutes. So to me, here's my idea for soccer. Purists out there, feel free to tell me I'm an asshole. No problem. Every time a goal is scored, a guy is laying around where the medics have to come out, or there's a VAR, you know, with the review, I would literally just stop the clock. Just stop it. After a goal, they celebrate for two minutes, right? Stop the clock. When the ball is put back in play, restart the clock. When guy is flopping around like fish, okay, stop the clock. When ball is put back in play, restart the clock. And just go to 45 minutes. When the hydration break happens, stop the clock. Stop the clock.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, I would have, if we had this conversation before the World Cup, no doubt I would have agreed 10 times over again. Um, after watching a lot of soccer over the last month, and and I've been hearing this thing I never heard about any other sport before a lot about soccer. It's a beautiful game. It is. That's all I keep hearing. It's a beautiful game. Beautiful sports. I say that to you all the time. You don't ever hear, oh, basketball's so beautiful or or football is so beautiful. You don't ever hear that. You hear it about soccer because there's so much going on in there that is not built into the rule book. And I kind of like that, you know, where you don't know how much time is left. It's like, all right, we know we're gonna have at least three minutes. Yeah, we know that there was a goal scored. That's another minute because of the celebration. Somebody rolled around, it's gonna be at least four or five minutes. Then sometimes you look up eight minutes.

SPEAKER_01

And sometimes it's eight minutes, and now you're at, no, I'm gonna have 10 minutes because someone in the eight minutes got hurt. Got hurt. It's even better.

SPEAKER_00

I like it. It's like, I mean, and they and if a team is moving the ball and there's something about to happen, they'll never call it. They let it go. They let it finish. I mean, that that does give it a sense of beauty, a certain amount of beauty. It does.

SPEAKER_01

And again, but look, sports have changed. Like now we have a pitch clock in baseball. All intent and purposes, that's been well received. Phenomenal. Right. Love it. You have ABS, yes. That's phenomenal. You know, um, you have all of this, uh, you everything in the NFL every year. But we moved.

SPEAKER_00

They needed it in baseball.

SPEAKER_01

They missed course left and right, goes and strikes left and sports change, but you don't really have that problem in soccer. I I don't the only problem I think I have in soccer is the offside stuff by a fingernail is crazy to me. Like you have the technology, see, when a ball gets touched, and and this, this finger to be offsides, but when it comes to adding time at the end of the game, no one knows anything. It was like, hey, I wonder what how much time is gonna be.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the other day we're able to put that that thing on where you could see where the offsides is. Yeah, right down the line. Right down the line. Right down the line. How many times was it just like a toenail sitting in there? It's crazy to me.

SPEAKER_01

But to me, like you never know. So I would just say, hey, goal scored, stop the clock. When play resumes, start the clock. Review, stop the clock, start the clock.

SPEAKER_00

Injury, stop it, start it, and just play to 45 minutes. I know it makes sense. And being an American, all the Americans are gonna say, yeah. No, I don't, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

You know what? With that one, I think I'm gonna get called an idiot.

SPEAKER_00

I I think I'm gonna get called an idiot.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't. But yeah, listen, soccer, great, beautiful sports you're programmed. I'm programmed to what?

SPEAKER_00

I'm to American sports in the way that we everything shuts down and everything's down.

SPEAKER_01

The definition of being programmed is not liking change. That is the definition, Webster's dictionary. I want to see change. That is not programmed.

SPEAKER_00

But you're programmed to see sports a certain way and watch it a certain way. Okay. With time limits, and you know how much time because you are being as an ex-football player, you knew how many seconds were left on the clock that you had to do in that short period of time. You're basically saying there's no time to game plan.

SPEAKER_01

But there was no so think about it. If football just ran their clock all time, someone got hurt and he was down for 45 seconds, but now they're gonna give you an extra minute. Well, they just added 15 seconds to the game. Sure. I just want to see it exact.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's it's sort of like even coaching in soccer, right? Like I just started watching this new show. I never ever would have watched the show, but it started playing, and I I'm in now. Ted Lasso, right? Oh, you haven't watched that? Never. Great scene. Never watched it. See the dark scene? I'm on, I I yes. Dart scene. Fantastic. Yeah, great scene. Yeah, it's great. Well, I just finished the whole first season in two days. But at one point, the kid says to his father, to Ted, and he's like, uh, what do you even do? Like, you're you're coaching, but I don't ever see you do anything. He's like, Well, that's because I don't. And that was his answer. He's like, we work all week to embed everything into them, and and I hope and pray when I'm on that sideline that they remember what I taught them. Yeah, and but like it's you, you're you're not yelling plays out, you're not doing so. The coach, like in football, coaching is way different, right? You're you're on top of every play, you're game calling. You got guys up in a booth watching from overhead, you've got so much more going on. In soccer, it's like it just keeps running. The clock is going, you can't call them aside.

SPEAKER_01

Similar, like you've done in football, you've done your work all week long, Monday through Friday. You put your game plan in. Very rarely are you gonna change anything in terms of game plan?

SPEAKER_00

For the game that's happening, right? Sure. You fall behind two touchdowns, you're not running the football like you wanted to at the beginning of the game, right? You gotta start.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there are definitely uh halftime adjustments, even though I think those are somewhat overrated. I think that's halftime adjustments are what like clueless people like to say about what happens in a football game. Uh, you might pick on a certain player or a certain area of the field, right? But you're not just walking into the locker room ripping up the gameplay. Oh, I mean, you know, but you yes, there are certain situations where you can pick on different things. And I I think the NFL, you know, for I guess baseball pond, I think they hit it out of the park with their week one. I really do. I mean, I'm excited about their week one. I'm excited about Patriots Seahawks, even though I think Seattle is gonna win that game at home. Uh, they put that game's on a Wednesday, which is great. We've never had a game on a Wednesday. And why does that game on a Wednesday? Because they put LA and San Francisco and Australia on Thursday. They did. So, um, but that's a big game for that division. No question. LA, San Francisco Australia.

SPEAKER_00

I think you do that just about every year. You gave us a couple of really good games, week one.

SPEAKER_01

Um, you know, out of conference games like Buccaneers and Bengals. Like that's that's a good game. It is. That's a good game for week one. Uh, Ravens, Colts. That's a good game. I'm excited to see Commanders and Philly. I just don't know when we're gonna get out of the Colts this year. Well, Daniel Jones, we'll see. I always root for Daniel Jones. I say that all the time. I root for him.

SPEAKER_00

You know, with the injury last year, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, now listen, first time that the Ravens got a new coach, and you know, Jesse Minter's there now. You know, obviously Halbar, you know, not saying anything new, he's with the Giants.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I think that's a great coaching addition for the New York Giants. I think Hallbar is one of the greatest coaches. Uh he's gonna bring at least discipline. Yeah, you know, I think they lost games last year due to their coach. I thought they lost multiple games due to their coaches.

SPEAKER_00

Because stable.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I think they lost games.

SPEAKER_00

That guy went from being one of the top coaches. I think he got a coach of the year. Yeah. And just right down into the black hole, the abyss. Packers Vikings is a is a good first. We also get coach of the year and then got fired a few years later. Well, I mean, it's it's so hard with the Browns. I mean, but still, he got them further than they've and he was doing it juggling quarterback. That was a terrible firing. Sorry.

SPEAKER_01

So there are certain jobs that I would never take. This is really gonna piss some people off. We can talk about jobs I wouldn't take. I would not take the Cleveland Browns head coaching.

SPEAKER_00

Me neither, not a chance.

SPEAKER_01

I would not take the New York Jets head coaching job.

SPEAKER_00

Me neither, not a chance.

SPEAKER_01

I would not take uh I know this is gonna sound crazy to a lot of people. I would not take the Tennessee Titans head coaching job. I don't think I would either. I wouldn't take that job.

SPEAKER_00

It's just a shit organization.

SPEAKER_01

It's a shit show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_01

I wouldn't take that job. Um I don't know, Jacksonville. I probably wouldn't take that job either because yeah, they're always running to London and everything, and you know, but there's that's a that you could take that job.

SPEAKER_00

Tom Coughlin proved that you could take that job and turn him into something.

SPEAKER_01

Well, he was, yeah, he was, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They were shit before he got there and shit after he left.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but there's like four or five jobs that I would not take. Like, you gotta put yourself in a situation to succeed in all aspects of life. Sure. Like, is your ego that big? Or you're gonna go to a place where the gods and the demons haunt you and you think you're bigger than that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but if you're if you're an up-and-coming coach, yeah, and you just you're dying for the opportunity.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And everyone's turning you down everywhere. You're putting you're still a coordinator at X number.

SPEAKER_01

You're gonna get fired in four years with the Jets.

SPEAKER_00

And then you get the call, and the Browns want you.

SPEAKER_01

Let me tell you something right now, right? And and this hasn't been proven due to um Ted Lasso would take the joke, the job. He might. Um, I I firmly believe Sala, Robert Sala, he is a very, very good head coach. No question about it. I we agree on that. Very good head coach. Now, he was a coach for the Jets where no one wins. You know, listen, so the Jets in their history, now Al Grow does not count. Al Grow went nine and seven. This is how deep I'm going with them, because I'm well versed in their history. Okay, and I'm not a Jets fan, but I am well versed in their history. Okay. They besides uh for a coach who's coached multiple seasons, not just one season, a coach that has coached multiple seasons with the New York Jets, they have one coach in their history with an over 500 record. One coach in their history. Oh, I know who it is. Shoot, who is it? Rex Ryan. It is not. Rex Ryan does not have over a 500 record with the New York Jets. Are you serious? I am serious. Would you like to know who it is? Two AFC championship games. But they weren't great in those years. They just got hot late and they had some really bad years. Rex Ryan does not have an over 500 record. You know who does? Who? Bill Paul Sells. Oh, yeah. He is the only coach in Jets history.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know why I didn't go back that far.

SPEAKER_01

Only coach in Jets history who's coached multiple seasons. Again, Algro did one year, went nine and seven. Multiple seasons with an over you cannot win there. You cannot win there. It's been proven. Now we go over to Cleveland Browns. You cannot win there. I don't know what it is. I don't know if something in the water. I don't know what it is. People never win there.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe Jim Brown did something before he left. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I like the uh Joe Nameth. So sell your soul to the uh to the devil. Hold on, I'll type in all-time Jets coaches. One loss record here, right? I'm telling you, man. I'll give you what uh what Rex Ryan was in a second. They have had so Rex Ryan was 50 and 52. Herman Eric's 41 and 44. Walt Michaels was around forever, 41 and 49. Bill Parcells, 30 and 20. 30 and 20.

SPEAKER_00

Only coached 50.

SPEAKER_01

Bruce Costa, 26 and 39. Todd Bowles, who is also a good coach.

SPEAKER_00

Todd Bowles. I like him as a coach. I like him, but I don't think he's a great 24 and 40.

SPEAKER_01

No, I didn't say great. I said he's a good one and what? 24 and 40 with the Jets. Eric Mangini, 23 and 26. Salah, 20 and 36. Sammy Ball was 14 and 14.

SPEAKER_00

I almost said Mangini, too.

SPEAKER_01

Uh, yeah. One coach. One coach in their history who's coached multiple seasons has an over 500 record.

SPEAKER_00

Why was Groh let go?

SPEAKER_01

I I don't even know. I have no idea. Is he fired or he quit? No, I think he went to Virginia. I think he took a college football job. Belichick knew it. Belichick quit before he even quit. Jesus.

SPEAKER_00

And went on to win five supervisors. Of course. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

Um, so yeah, I mean, it's uh we're in that time right now where it's a little bit of a slow grind, no World Cup. We're in baseball, preseason starts. You know, um, we're starting to get back with uh people coming on. We're gonna have Allison Jordan, former Playboy Playmate. She'll be live in studio next week. She comes in once a year to come live in studio. Uh so we're looking forward to seeing Allison. Um, we got some former NFL players lined up, some guys who's won Super Bowls lined up to come on. That's gonna be pretty cool. Yeah, we got some really good names lined up to come on as football season goes.

SPEAKER_00

We're gonna talk about ESPN before we get.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, we got to talk about the firing. Shit, I forgot about that. Yeah. They fired Ryan Clark in the basics.

SPEAKER_00

Basically on air. That's first off, no one's gonna tell me that they're surprised by this, right? I mean, they they do this now almost every year. There's a bunch of firings. They bought NFL network a hundred and whatever days ago, right? Billions of dollars. Billions and billions of dollars, which to me, I don't know why the Justice Department didn't step in and say that this is monopolizing and blah, blah, blah, whatever. But they let it go through. So now ESPN owns NFL network, NFL network or whatever, NFL owns 10% of ESPN, an equity position, right? You there's redundancies when you buy merger and acquisitions on any spectrum, whether it's uh sports or or a corporation, there's redundancies amongst the two companies. So we knew this was gonna happen. You don't need three insiders, right? You don't need three NFL insiders that you got to pay millions of dollars.

SPEAKER_01

Especially when two of them are idiots.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And you you got this other talent that wants $60 million a year and you're gonna pay it to keep McAfee around.

SPEAKER_01

So, well, he's a talent. Stephen A. Smith is a talent. No doubt. Ryan Clark, I was not fond of. I I don't think he brought a lot to the table in terms of his analysis. He did a lot of race baiting. Uh, I thought Bart Scott was really good. I thought he was great. I thought I was very surprised.

SPEAKER_00

I really was.

SPEAKER_01

Um, sorry to see him go because I thought he did a tremendous job. What's his name? The guy 33.

SPEAKER_00

Call Ravage. Ravage, me. Right. How'd he do wrong? Well, I mean, this is my thing. Like they he's taken pay cuts. He has literally adapted to everything ESPN has ever asked him to do, and he finds out by another reporter asking him what he thinks of it.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I want to say this is something well to your point, I don't know how controversial this is gonna sound, and a lot of people are not able to do it anyway, which is a shame. But you work at a company for so long, and most people, most people pour their heart and soul into that company. Yes. Most people want to show up to work and do the best job that they can do. They're loyal to the company, they're loyal to the mandates, and they want to please their bosses or their their clients or whatever, and it just does not matter. These companies can just pull a rug out from under you. I I have owned my own business for over 20 years, okay? I have fired one person in my life, and I rehired that person back. I have fired one person, and I'm gonna tell you why. I'm not trying to sound high and mighty, and you know this about me. I like creating jobs for people, I like giving people the opportunity to earn, and I don't want to take an opportunity to make money away from people, right? I'm not a major company, right? I'm a I'm a I'm a smid, small, small business, right? I'm a small business owner, right? These major companies like college football coaches, they do not care. So you're putting your you're pouring your heart and soul into this company for a paycheck just so you can survive. And the people you're doing it for do not care. College football coach, if you can go out and get someone in a transfer portal that's gonna replace a three-year player for you, you will go do it. And if you say otherwise, you're full of shit. You will go do it and you will kick that player aside. Companies, if you can cut a guy and and and make the bottom line a little bit better for yourself, you will do it. I firmly believe that. I think it's disgusting.

SPEAKER_00

It is. I think that there should be uh when when you know, guy like Ravich, who has been there for so long, he should have had it in his contract at some point with some type of you know deal for when he leaves. I mean, when you're you when you're the guy that's showing up. Before everybody else, and you're saying hello to the janitor on your way in, and you're the last one to leave at night, and you let me should be working. It should be worse. It should be working and it's not. We used to make jokes about it. You got to watch at the end of your career, right? Like when you got done the retirement party, you got to watch all those years, and then all I got is a stupid watch.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and and so I would I would say this here's my advice. You know, we we we give out predictions on the outcome of sporting events, and we offer our advice to the best of our ability, sure, and we work hard at it. If you are able to, man, I would never work for someone. I I would go start your own thing, start your own brand, trust yourself. Because to me, to me, and again, this could be really an arrogant statement. Please, it's not meant as such. But to pour 20 years into a company and have no equity in that company 33 years, right? Yeah, anything. I worked hard. I helped build the company and I have no equity in a company. What the fuck is that worth it to me?

SPEAKER_00

This guy's literally been there the entirety of my working career. And has never caused a problem. Has never caused a problem. Never calls a great baseball game. Yes. Right? And just bye-bye. Just bye-bye. And they don't even have the decency to call him into the office and do it face to face. Now I'm not a Ryan Clark Clark fan.

SPEAKER_01

Never have been. I don't think Ryan Clark is a good analyst. I do not. Okay. I think I I like his uh his podcast pivot. I'm not talking about from a podcast. Like we do a podcast. I'm talking about I don't I don't in terms of being an analyst on ESPN, I did not think.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't hate him. Well, he's also somebody from a team that I liked.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, there you go. Right? But they fired this guy in the middle of a segment. You don't even have the common courtesy to let the guy finish and then say, hey Ryan, we decided to move in a different direction. No, they went to commercial. He was on TV on one end of it. When they came back to the other end, gone. Fired. I I don't agree with that.

SPEAKER_00

The other analysts that were on there with him on the first segment before he knew. And a lot of folks are saying that the people on with him knew. Like you could see their faces like, oh my God. He has no idea that he's just been fired. That's a shame. It really is. And it's just a bad, bad way of doing business. Why are we having this conversation? You are a multi, multi-billion dollar organization. There's no one in there that whoever's running your operations department, fucking fire him. Okay. They're not doing a good job.

SPEAKER_01

That guy needs to go. And you and I are aligned like this. We do not like seeing anyone. I don't like firing anybody.

SPEAKER_00

Never liked it. All the businesses I've ever ran, never, ever did I like getting rid of people like you. I don't like doing it. Um, but you know, there are instances where someone deserves it, right? I mean, there's an unfortunate circumstance.

SPEAKER_01

Someone would go on ESPN and just finally say, stop being full of shit, you woke idiots. Just stop it. Tell the truth. The American public, whether they like it or not, they just want to hear the truth. When we do this podcast, he's the truest thing I can tell you about this podcast. We speak facts. Whether you don't like it or you like it, I don't care. He don't care. We don't care. We're just gonna tell you the facts of the situation, and then you guys go run off and do whatever. Like, I don't even watch the when after this is done, I don't even watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I can't. I can't watch it. I can't watch myself. I can't watch myself.

SPEAKER_01

I already know what I said. I'm not gonna watch it.

SPEAKER_00

I'm like, oh my god, I look like a fat bastard in that video.

SPEAKER_01

They put this shit on social media, so the social media kid is like, hey, don't you watch this shit? I'm like, no. Go do whatever you want.

SPEAKER_00

It's like my wife looking at pictures. She's like, Don't you want to see? I'm like, I was there. I was there.

SPEAKER_01

What the hell?

SPEAKER_00

Look, I'm in the picture. I don't need to relive it. Maybe 25 years later.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna give a free pick. You did yours last week. I went one-on-one last week. I lost France against England. By the way, great job, England, in that game. But that game, that third place game was What a game. Incredible. But we hit draw in the championship game between Spain and Argentina, which was plus 205. So we won some money last week, even though we went one-on-one.

SPEAKER_00

By the way, not only did I hit the draw on that, but I didn't even tell you, I had Spain in extra time.

SPEAKER_01

Love it.

SPEAKER_00

Love it.

SPEAKER_01

Love it. That's great.

SPEAKER_00

And then I had just in case I had a little hedge, Argentina in penalty kicks. Because if it went to penalty kicks, make a mistake. Argentina's winning that game.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I I think Seattle. Now, this line earlier in the week was three and a half. Seems like it went up to four and a half, just because Chris Hodge seemed to think it. How many times does a point move on us like in our life? Oh my god, please.

SPEAKER_00

I don't even want to talk about it.

SPEAKER_01

But it is a free pick six weeks early. I think Seattle, I think they win. I'm gonna I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna final score prediction. Six weeks early. I'm gonna give you 30 to 17. Seattle wins week one, 30 to 17. Let's see if I'm right. Anything else? What say you? Anything else to say? 30 to 17. 30 to 17. Not a blowout, but you know, don't want to go. Seattle at home, the 12s celebrating the Super Bowl. 30 to 17. Uh, that's gonna wrap up this edition of the Bed Big Talk Loud Podcast. Hope you enjoyed. Listen to us. Be safe, have fun. Let's go out there and make some money.
