This week on Messy But Motivated, I’m diving into the recent craziness surrounding NeeDoh’s and using it as a real-life example of how quickly culture can influence what we normalize—especially for our kids.

As Christians, we’re called to be different, not to blend in. I share my heart on what that actually looks like in today’s world and how I’ve been having honest, age-appropriate conversations with the youth in our ministry about some tough topics.

If you’ve ever struggled with how to explain hard truths while still leading with love, this episode is for you. Let’s talk about raising and guiding the next generation to stand firm in their faith—even when it’s not popular.

Don't forget to subscribe for more real, raw, and motivating faith filled conversations.

Welcome back to Messy But Motivated. I'm your host, Melinda. Welcome back, guys. Welcome back. You want an update on the house? It's sorted in cell. We haven't sold it. House is still here. I'm still in the house. And you know, oh man, lots of thoughts going through my head. You want to know them all? I can tell you. Um so don't get me wrong, people have come back and they're like counter offer, like verbal, which I've never even known of that. You guys, I don't I don't is that it that's a thing now? Like we're gonna verbally counter like without doing paperwork and then let us know what you think and like no paperwork's involved. I don't know. That's really weird to me. I've never had that happen out of all the houses I've ever bought. That's never happened, but lately it's been happening here a lot. Um, oh, got my hair caught. Okay, anyways. Um, and I have a lot of thoughts going through my head. Is that the Lord trying to be like, listen, uh-uh, stay where you're at? So many thoughts going through my head. Like, is now not the timing? I don't know. Pray for me. Pray that, pray that it's just it is so clear that I am on the right path. Because right now I'm like, wait, is this his way of being like, hey, if not right now, like stay where you are, like I don't, I don't even you guys, it's just it's I don't even it's a lot. It's a lot it's a lot. So just pray for me, please. Um I'm I'm accepting prayers, but yeah, I I don't I don't know. I I always I'm that person that's like well and if it's God's will, and yeah, if it's God's will, but also I'm over here like wait, so should we still be and then I talk to somebody else and they're like we haven't had any showings, so I'm like, oh okay, well, we've had quite a few, so alright, all right. Just gotta wait it out, just gotta wait it out. So that's what I'm gonna do. I'm just waiting it out right now, but still need prayers, so you can give those to us all you want. We actually went to um our church does this thing called Pursuit Night. We went to it on and it's once a month, we went to it on Sunday because I was like, babe, we need we need answers. We need we need we need the Lord to move, so we gotta go and got some prayers in there, but definitely I guess time will tell. Watch. Maybe I'll get on here next week and have a whole update and be like, oh, we sold the house. So I don't I don't know. I don't I don't know. I don't know. But what I do know is is everybody okay? Are y'all okay? Now maybe, now maybe it's because I'm seeing things through a whole different lens, okay? Like I I feel like everybody's not okay. Everybody's getting a little crazy with these nido, NATO, whatever they are. I I'm gonna be honest with you. My kids were like, can can can you order them? Listen, listen to me. We are not called to be like everybody else, okay? Just because everybody else wants the Nito, NATO, whatever they're called, doesn't mean that we need to stand in line for them. And and and now I'm gonna take you to that part. What are you parents doing? Why are we standing in line for these? What are we teaching our children here that that these worldly things are worth? You are gonna waste two hours of your I'm I'm just giving you grace here, two hours. Okay, I don't even care if it's 10 minutes. You're gonna waste time to go stand in line for a little squishy ball. When I know that these squishy balls weren't even like a big deal back in around Christmas, do you wanna know how I know? Because I bought a bunch of them and nobody wanted them, so I gave them to Toys for Tots. So now they're a thing, and now they're racking up their prices. $19 for a little squishy ball? What are you talking about? You have lost your mind. You I need all of you to bring it back down to earth. And if this is you and you are like, I feel so convicted, right? I hope you do. I hope right now you are like, what am I doing? Why am I teaching my kid that it is okay to go stand in line for and wait for a Nito NATO, whatever they are called, when we uh uh immediately no. Immediately no. No. Mm-mm. Not happening. My kids asked me for one. I said, if you can find it online, I'm not standing in line, I'm not making special trips, I'm not doing no. No. Uh-uh. Nope, because in a in about a month it's gonna be something else. And then they're gonna think that we're always gonna be chasing the thing that everybody else chases, and that's just not how we're gonna live our lives. We were called to to live our lives differently, and that's what we're gonna do. So, absolutely not. And I encourage you mothers and fathers who are out there and you're on the hunt for NOTO NATOs, and you're standing in line with your kids and stuff, maybe um have that conversation with them. That we that's not what we do here, that's not what we do in our house. We we we don't do that. Okay, it's cool, yeah, we like it, but we aren't called to be like everybody else. Okay? Uh-uh. No. No. Alright. I just felt like I had to get that out because I'm seeing so many people, parents, even be like, oh, well, Saturday and or on Sunday, or this person restocks on Friday night, and I'm like, what are you doing? But yet you but yet you say you don't have time for other things. I don't have time. I don't have time to go to church on Sunday. I don't have time to do a Bible study. I don't have time for a small group. But you have time to stand in line for a NATO, NATO? For your kid? I don't know. I don't know. I think you need to sit down. Sit down with your with your Bible and really you need to have a talk with the Lord because something something something ain't right. Something ain't right. And I'm not trying to be mean about it. I'm just trying to ru listen. It's okay. It's okay that right now you're like, ooh, I do feel convicted. Wow, it's okay. Sometimes it takes people like like us friends to say, hey, what are you doing? Like immediately no. Immediately no. So my kids know, don't even ask me. It ain't no. So yeah, and I'm not trying to be mean, I'm sorry if you guys take it that way, but that is that's not my intention. My intention is to tell you, get it together. And if you take that in a mean way, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but some of these people lately, I'm I I I can't even believe my eyes. They're like, Well, we can't show up on this day because that's the day they restock Nido's, NATO's. What? Huh? What are you talking about? You better be are you? I hope you're kidding. I hope you're kidding. But you know what? Some good news on the other side is uh Perez Hilton Hilton Perez Hilton, yeah. I don't mind I said Perez Hilton yesterday. My mom goes, Perez Hilton. I said no, Perez. So I make sure y'all, not Paris, Perez. Um, I would have not been a fan of his, and I'm oh my gosh, when I tell y'all I have not been a fan of his, I just always have found him so annoying. Like you literally base your life and you make money off of making fun of people and being mean to people, and it's just uh it's just icky to me. It was just nasty, icky, just didn't feel right. And I've always been like to him, like, ugh, just anytime it uh his post, like any ah, scroll, scroll. Like, I don't I don't want to hear it, nothing. And I know for a while people were all about him, like they were like everybody was against him, like, you know, because of the way that he is and the way that this some of the things that he's done. Now, I don't know enough about him to know exactly what he's done, but I do know that a lot of people dislike him. Well, he's in the news right now because supposedly he had this encounter with the Lord, and my heart was so happy when I heard this because God that just goes to show you that God uses imperfect people to to shine. He he he went to Perez Hilton. Do you guys realize that? He went to somebody who has who makes money by talking bad about other people, who gossips, who sins all the time, who's um who it just all the things. He does all the things, checks all the boxes, and and God went to him. So wow. Uh, I didn't get in any information really on like what was said. All I know is he had an encounter with the Lord, and that was enough for me to be like, yes. Oh, I was telling I was so happy my kids got in the car after school, and I was trying to explain to them what kind of person he is. I'm like, well, I I don't I say is, but I think after this he's gonna change, he's gonna completely change. Um, but I I was trying to explain to them he has always just been a really not so nice person, and the Lord is using him right now, and it's just such a beautiful thing to see and to hear about. And I, you know, it was just to try to explain it to them, like I was so giddy and excited about it, and they were just looking at me like I was kind of crazy, but then they smiled, so I I think they understand what I'm trying to say. Like, I was just like, you guys, like this is huge, like this is huge. Do you know how many people who are lost that follow Perez think about that? He is like the person people follow because they're also broken. Broken people follow broken people, you know, sinful people follow sinful people, and so just knowing that God's using him, and I pray, oh, I don't think he would lie about something like that. I pray he wouldn't lie about something like that. Um, because to have an encounter with the Lord is something that you should nobody should lie about. I I especially I oh I have had an encounter and I shared that with you guys, and it's um just I if you haven't heard that, it's episode five or six, I believe. Um, but that's the reason I'm doing everything that I'm doing right now. That's the reason I'm in seminary. This reason everything that I'm doing right now is all because of that encounter with the Lord. So I pray and uh that He did have an encounter with Him and that everything from this day forward is just going to be so different for him. I pray for that. Oh, I pray for that. Oh, because he can lead so many people. Oh, if he just takes this serious, if he just takes it serious, the amount of people that he can lead to the Lord is is astronomical. If people can see somebody like him who was so broken in everything, just repent and turn to the Lord right now and start walking with him. And I'm telling you, he is going to make a dramatic amount of or drastic amount of people uh turn to the Lord. I know it, I feel it, I feel it. So I'm rooting for Perez, I really am. Um, and I know it took something like uh somebody said that he had been super sick and in the hospital when it happened, and sometimes that happens, you guys. Sometimes that happens, it does. And um, we just have to remember that. So sometimes when people are at rock bottom and they're in the hospital for whatever reason, I know a lot of people are like, oh, you know, you think you have to, you know, step in and do this and do that, but just remember that God always has a plan, and his plan on this was yeah, he was gonna hit rock bottom, and he did um with his health, and that's where he met him. God will meet you where you're at, he will meet you where you're at. So it's just beautiful, honestly. Uh and I'm excited. I'm excited about it. I really am. I'm super excited because I'm just I can't wait to see. I truly believe that he's gonna turn so many people towards the Lord, and I'm excited to see it all. I really am. So I guess we all just stand by and watch, and I'm um I know I keep saying it, but I'm excited because I've already seen. Have y'all been seeing Justin Timberlake? Not Justin Tim, oh Justin Timberlake, I'm sure you've been seeing him. He got a do I, a doe. Actually, wasn't it just the footage that was released? Either way, it was kind of funny because listen, he was toasted, he was toasted. There was no coming back from it. He was like, I'm Justin Timberlake. I don't know. Anyways, that's it. I meant to say Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber. Have y'all been seeing that? Oh my gosh, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't do it. He is singing Christian music in church, and I'm just like, listen, mm-mm. No, I I can't. And y'all, can I just tell you a big win on my part? Like, my heart is so full today. My heart is so full, and I haven't even told my husband this because my husband's been at work for 24 hours, and about an hour will be 24 hours or two hours. But he is gonna be so happy. My father-in-law, Mike's dad, is going to church. I'm like, what? What I know now Mike grew up going to church, but somewhere along the way, you know, things, you know, life. And Mike's dad has not gone to church for a very long time. And he, I guess, is he called Mike's sister and was like, hey, what time's church? And oh, yeah, yeah. So I'm excited. I pray, y'all. I'm always praying. I'm always praying for my family, oh, and friends that just you know, one foot in, one foot out. Um, I always pray. I say, you know, Lord, I know you got a plan, and I'm my job is not to push people towards you. I that's not I don't want to force anybody. I'm not my job is to plant the seeds, and then your job is you're gonna have them grow. I know that's my job. I know my place, Lord. I know my place, I know, but also I can I see something like give me a little something, give me something to let me know that you're doing your part because I'm over here trying to do mine, but then I'll I'm like, where are you at? Where's your part? I'm over here, I'm I feel like I'm I'm always like planting the seeds and do and then I'm looking around, like, is he gonna water them? Because I can't do this alone, and then I always have to remember. My job is to plant the seed, not to make people accept the gospel. That's his job, okay? That's his job, and I'm learning that right now in in um in school. I started another semester of school um Monday, and I'm telling you, now we're on to evangelism. Last last semester was discipleship, and I learned a lot about that, and it's so crazy because so many people are like, that's not discipleship. I'm like, um, I'm pretty sure I just did at least six essays on what discipleship is. I think I know what it is. Okay, y'all. I I I I'm not one to sit here and say I know things, but I'm I'm gonna sit, I'm gonna put my foot down on that one, I know things, when it comes to discipleship, because a lot of it scared me. And I'm like, um, yeah, I I think I I think that I can say now I know what discipleship is. So a lot of people are like, well, that's not what it is. I'm sorry. Um I I'm in school for ministry, and and they really want us to know the truth about discipleship, and I'm pretty sure they didn't teach me something that wasn't correct. So yeah. Ever now that's the thing though, everybody's gonna have their different things like evangelism, people's got their own on discipleship. Every everybody's always got their own thing to say about all of that, and hey, hey, that's why there's so many different religions, okay? I just know what I'm studying right now, and I'm gonna go by what I'm studying and what it says and all the things, and it's not that I'm I'm trying to be mean about it, I'm just saying, hey, I know what I have what I've been learning, all right? So I'm gonna stick to what the professionals are teaching me, you know what I mean? That's all I'm saying. Okay, all right, but school's intense this week, it is, it's intense. One of the classes we're in. Um, I think I so I have a quiz due by Sunday, and it's like 25 questions, but a lot of reading. Oh, it's a lot of reading. That's the hardest part about all this, you guys. I didn't realize it. It's all the reading you read so much, you read so much, and we're in two classes because that's considered full-time online. So, I I mean, I'm reading probably eight, nine chapters for one class, and then you go to the other class, and then you have to do the same for them, and hopefully they they have more videos. Um, this week I'm lucky enough to have like six videos for one class, and then the other class is like eight chapters, so it's just a lot of reading, a lot of note-taking, a lot of things. So yeah, but we're doing it, we're doing it, and I'm still super excited about it. So just always praying that he continues to help me out because there's a lot of things that are really hard for me to understand. And then with that, I want to say this because this happened yesterday at um our kids' ministry. Listen, if you're a parent or if you're even around kids and you're trying to teach them the gospel, I I need to tell you this because I'm in charge of the kindergartens, kindergartners, the kindergartners at RZ kids. And let me tell you something. They challenged me this week. I was getting questions because we're learning about the resurrection, okay? We're learning about the crucifixion, we're learning about things that are really hard, okay? So it kids have a lot of questions right now, okay? They're like, huh? But what is this and what is that? And I and guess what? That's up to us. We need to have some answers, okay? So I'm gonna give you a little bit of a blanket answer for some of these things because a lot of these kids just are asking a lot of questions, guys. And I'm gonna tell you some of the questions that they asked me and then how I answered them because I truly believe that if I got asked it um by a bunch of kindergartners, you're probably gonna be asked these questions in life. And if I can help you out just a little, let me do that. So one of the questions was we were talking about one of the girls says, Why do you keep calling Jesus God? And I said, Oh, because Jesus is God. Well, then how come there's a God in heaven too? So you have to understand, and this is also really hard for a lot of people. The Trinity is really hard to really comprehend. And if you really, I had a professor tell me if you can grasp it completely, then your God is too small for you. So just remember that it's it's gonna be hard to really understand. So just remember that God is the term God is a blanket term. It's a blanket term, it's kind of like mother, father. It's a there's many mothers, there's many fathers. And we have to remember when we're telling these kids, because they're they're asking, hold on. I thought you said Jesus was God. Wait, but then why did you say the Holy Spirit is God? And then, you know, all these things. Here's the best way to tell a child. Yeah, but just like there's lots of mothers. See, I have a mother, you have a mother, she has a mother, he has a mother, and they all we all call a mom. So you have to remember that whenever somebody's talking about God, God is a blanket term. God is the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Three, the Trinity, and just try to explain that to them the best you can. It's really hard when they're that young, though, you guys. It's really hard. And they're gonna be confused no matter what. So just try to give them um something that will that will kind of cushion it until their brain really will wrap around all of it. Because I mean, I'm 38 and it's really hard sometimes to wrap my head around it all. So just really know, be confident. That's the number one thing I can tell you is be confident with it. Know who God is, know who God is, okay? So that we can sit and tell these children and be confident with our answers because we don't ever want them to be like, hold on, my mom didn't even know what it was when I asked her. Or I asked my grandma, and she was like, uh, you know, yeah, I guess it's three people. And you know, so just make sure that when we're talking to children, we really are trying to help them understand in a way that is not gonna overwhelm them, okay. Okay, so I think that's the best way. And my kids, they when I when I explained it, like the Holy Spirit came through for me on that because it was kind of like off guard. They asked me and I was just like, ooh. But um, I I feel like the Holy Spirit came through and was just like, explain it this way. So I explained it that way, and they were they were good with that. The other one was God's only one person, so how come he's with all of us? And I'm telling you, that question has been within the last week, that question from Littles has been asked multiple times. Okay. So the best way to explain it in a way that they would understand it is, you know what happened when Jesus left? Do you know what happened? And then they say, No, what happened? Well, when Jesus left, he says, I must go so that I can leave you with the Holy Spirit. Because then everybody would have the Holy Spirit. Because Jesus was only, he was only with, you know, in in a radius with people. Now, if he left, he got to leave us with the spirit, his spirit. And then everybody who believed in him got the spirit. And they really like understood it that way. So then, yes, he's with us, he's walking beside us and he's within us. Like, if as long as you believe in him, and as long as you know that he he died on the cross and he rose um three days later, and like you just try to explain it in a way that they would understand and also be confident, be confident in it. Um, one of the things that I like to tell people who aren't underage, uh, that can can comprehend a little bit is the fact that because somebody explained it to me like this, and now I love to explain it like this because I'm like, ooh, makes so much sense. Thank you for saying that. So the father or the Old Testament, think of God. Old Testament, God. The New Testament, think of Jesus, right? Jesus, because Jesus came into the world, and then we are right now living in the Holy Spirit. So think of it like that. So it's easier when like when you're talking to somebody who can understand the Old Testament, New Testament. Now, kids don't really understand that very well. Um, they just know it as one big story. So if I can give you any advice is try to keep that in the back of your mind when you're explaining to the older people like that might have questions. But the younger ones, the best way you can describe it is just like I just said. Um, just let them know, you know, that Jesus had to leave in order to leave us with the Holy Spirit because he wanted to be with everybody. And that's exactly what he did. You're not lying to them. That's that's exactly we all have the Holy Spirit within us if we have accepted him as our Lord and Savior. And um, you can really start to feel that spirit move within you and be present with you when you are eating your daily bread, when you are in your Bible daily, when you're uh doing your worshiping, when you are talking to him, when you're praying, when you're uh just all the things when you decide not to turn the TV on and instead grab your Bible or uh or a book about him, or you know, just all the things. So make sure that you are always strengthening that. Always like every day you should try to get closer and closer to him. So every day, maybe you know, read a scripture, every day, maybe just pray a little bit more. Um, yeah, sorry, I went down the rabbit hole because the I I hope those two because those two questions came up. That's that's what I was trying to get to. I hope that that can help you if these kids, because these quite kids are inquisitive, okay, and I love it, I love it. But oh, another one. Somebody said, How come she's she was so cute. She said, How come there are some people who don't who who some kids in my class that don't know about Jesus? And so for she's a kindergartner, guys. So these are just questions that and and so I had to explain to her that you know it is so crazy. I said, Because you know you have this beautiful job. Did you know that? And she's like, huh? And I said, you have been given this amazing, beautiful, amazing, spectacular job from from the Lord. He has given you this job because you believe in him and your faith is so strong that he says, I want you to be the to be the light. So you need to be the light. And what does that mean? That means that for those people who do not know, don't they know Jesus because they're not um going to church and their parents aren't telling them about Jesus? You need to live like Jesus so that when they see you, they say, Wow, how is she always so happy? Didn't she just say her dog died yesterday? Why is she still smiling today? Um, didn't she just say that she had the flu and they had to miss going to Disney? Why is she still having a smile on her face? They need to see Jesus through you, they need to see the gospel through you. So she really was like, Oh, and I'm like, Yes, so that is our job as Christians is to be the light. We are here to be the light. So there's gonna be people around you that maybe don't know about Jesus, and we are known, we have to be planting the seeds and we have to keep the smile on our face, and we just have to remember that we are we do not lead by sight, we lead by faith. We as Christians are following the Lord, and we are the light, we are the salts in the light. So the salt must never lose its saltiness, and so we have to keep ourselves fueled, and that's with our daily bread and all these things. So, anyways, explaining that to a kid, just let them know hey, you know, that we're supposed to be the light, and we're supposed to tell people about Jesus, and it's not running up and saying, Do you know about my Jesus? No, it's not like that. It's whenever they say, Hey, I heard you didn't get to go to Disney, you were sick, you know, you say, Oh, I know, it's okay though, I feel better. So God must have had a plan, you know. And and it's things like that, that it's the little seeds, because they're like, What does she mean? God must have had a plan. Like, I would be so upset if I were her. But in reality, it's like, no, because we know, because we're Christians, we know that God wouldn't have done that if there wasn't a purpose. There, there had to have been some reason. Maybe we were gonna get in a car accident, maybe something bad was gonna happen, maybe you know, whatever the case might be, um we have to remember that there's always a reason because we follow the Lord, and the Lord would never put us through something that there wasn't a purpose for. There's always a purpose to everything. One thing I have learned is in Matthew 6 when he says, preach, Jesus says preach to the end of the earth. We have to remember that he didn't say preach to those who want to hear it. He didn't say that. He said preach to the end of the earth. So remember that we need to be teaching our kids that too, because they're going to come around people who maybe don't want to hear it or try to silence them. And it's very important that we teach them, hey, hey, we live by the Bible, and what does the Bible say? We will preach to the end of the earth. So that's what we will do, and we will be rewarded in heaven. So definitely just something to keep in mind because these kids, I'm telling you, they got these questions. I know I said that, but they got these questions, they got lots of questions. Even my kids, you know, they they have questions, and sometimes they ask me questions I have no idea the answer. But I I am so blessed that I have this like database, database, database, I don't know what what y'all, anyways, um, for school that we get to use, and I can literally type in stuff and it'll give me answers. Not like answers, but like it'll like right now. If I asked it, like, explain the salt of the earth, what did Jesus mean by that? It'll give me like the scripture, commentaries, all that for that, so that is an easier way for me to explain it to people, which is really cool. So I'm very blessed to have that. Very, very blessed to have it because I've used it quite a bit. Because I'll even be like, I don't understand that verse. What do you mean by that? I'm also learning that you know, ooh, I didn't know this. So have you ever heard people be like, that version of the Bible? So you never uh uh don't ever read that version of the Bible, don't do this. So do you know that there are just people that are completely stuck to one Bible and and and they refuse to read other ones because they don't like the translation or whatever it is. Okay, uh there are people like that, I'm just telling you. It and and and I get it a lot. I don't even want to see what you're doing if or saying if it's from the NIV or ESV or whatever. Um people I have learned from school, KJV is like it for Americans. Americans love KJV because it's the closest translation, and the other ones that they don't like is the NIV, which is uh New International Version, the ESV, um, English Standard Version, and then the NLT. And I'll tell you what, people are just all against it. And I have learned because I'm comparing them right now in seminary, um, you can so this database that we use is so amazing. I can go in there and I could put them all four together, and I could put um you know the Greek word because it'll show me what the Greek word was, and then it'll say the translation and it'll tell me which one was the better translation for it at a percentages. So I'm blessed enough to have that to be like, oh, here's what I like. Um, and the one right now that's actually like becoming one of my favorites is the ESV. And I know a lot of people are like, what the heck? But um, I love KJV, I have that one. Um, but yeah, right now I've been using the ESV in school a lot, just because a lot of the times when I'm translating it from the Greek, um it will or the Hebrew, it'll it'll come up and it the main percentages for are for the ESV, like the highest percentages for besides King James version, because you know, obviously that one's a little bit more in depth, but also it's more like thou shall not, whereas uh, you know, the ESV is more of speaking the way that you know I'm talking right now. So yeah, but just remember that it's really what you are comfortable with. That's all it is. So and that is all I have for you today. That's it. And watch, I'm gonna walk away and I'm gonna feel like I forgot something because I probably did. I probably did, but that's all right. We'll talk again next week. We'll talk again next week. It's fine. It's fine. All right, I love you. Have a great week, have a blessed week, and uh yeah, just live. I hope you got spring weather because I'm here in Iowa, and let me tell you, it's bipolar right now. So I'll pray that you get good weather if you pray if I get good weather. Okay? All right, I love you. I love you back. Bye guys.
