What Andy Knows

On Monday morning, Papa had emergency eye surgery. By Thursday, the doctors say he is doing well — but the word emergency has been sitting in the Jones household all week like a guest nobody invited. The older children are quiet in their own ways, careful with their words and their footsteps, carrying a worry they don’t quite have language for yet. And then Papa comes to stay for a few days while he recovers — and Andy, who is two years old and has no framework for emergency or surgery or careful, walks straight up to Papa, places his red ball in Papa’s hands, says “ba,” and climbs up beside him like nothing in the world has changed. Because for Andy, nothing has. Papa is Papa. And that turns out to be the most important thing anyone says all week.

Papa has a story for you about your favorite family The Joneses The call came before breakfast. Mom answered it in the kitchen with her coffee still in her hand, and the children knew before she said a word that something had changed. It was the way she set the mug down carefully, in the particular way of a person who needs both hands free for what's coming next. Papa had woken up that morning, and his vision suddenly changed. Something urgent and unexpected, the kind that didn't wait for a scheduled appointment. He was already at the surgery center. The surgery was happening that morning. Mom thinked the person on the phone, said she was on her way and looked up to find four girls standing in the kitchen doorway, in various stages of readiness for a day that had just become something else entirely. She told them simply, papa's eye, emergency surgery. The doctors were taking good care of him. She would be at the surgery center. Dad was already on his way there. misses Patterson from next door would check in on them. Is papa gonna be okay? Anna asked. Her voice was different from its usual register, smaller, without the speed. We're trusting God with that, Mom said, and we're praying right now before I leave. They prayed in the kitchen, all five of them, plus Andy, who had toddled in mid prayer with a truck and stood very still during it, as though he understood that standing still was the right thing to do. Then Mom left, and the house was quiet in a way it almost never was. The surgery had gone well. That was the word by Monday afternoon. Well, the doctors were pleased anyway, papa was resting. And it would take time, but he was going to be all right. The relief was real. But the word emergency didn't leave the house just because the news was good. It had settled in somewhere between the walls and the routines, and it stayed. The children moved through the week more carefully than usual. Not because anyone asked them to, just because something had shifted in the air and they could all feel it, the way you feel weather before it arrives. Alison organized, she reorganized the linen closet on Tuesday, and the hall closet on Wednesday, not because they needed it, but because her hands needed something orderly to do, when the rest of life didn't feel that way. She also wrote papa a card, a real one, on paper, with careful handwriting, and left it on the kitchen counter without announcing it. Addison had gone quiet, in the way she sometimes went quiet when something was too close to look at directly. She spent Tuesday afternoon rearranging her room without arriving at any configuration that felt right. Which was unlike her. She knew what she liked. She always knew what she liked. The not knowing unsettled her more than she expected. Anna had talked more on Monday than perhaps any day of her life, which was considerable. She narrated everything. She filled every silence. By Tuesday she had run around and out of narration and gone uncharacteristically still, which was in some ways harder to witness. Ava Grace had made papa drawing on Tuesday morning, a careful one, with real attention given to the colors. She rolled it up and tied it with a piece of yarn she found in the craft basket, and set it on the counter beside Alison's card without a word. And Andy moved through it all the way, Andy moved through everything trucks, drum, vroom. The particular business of a two year old whose world was exactly the size of the room he was in and no larger. On Thursday, papa came. Dad brought him in the early afternoon. Papa was moving a little more slowly than usual, and he had a patch over his eye that the girls had been told about, but that was still different to see in person. He was tired in a way that papa didn't usually look tired, which was its own quiet thing to absorb. But he was papa, same voice. The way he held himself was the same when he came through the door and saw four girls standing in the living room with the particular stillness of children who had been worried and are now trying not to show it. He looked at each of them in turn and said, Now, don't go looking at me like I'm made out of glass. Papa's alright. Something in the room exhaled. Alison went to him first. She hugged him carefully, the way you hug someone when you're eleven and know how to be careful. He hugged her back the way he always had, which was the most important part. Addison hugged him next, then Anna, who had about seven things to say and managed to compress them into a single Papa, I was so worried that came out smaller than anything she'd said all week. I know, baby, I know. Ava Gray stood in front of him, and held up the rolled drawing tied with yarn. Papa took it with his hands and looked at her over the top of it. Is this for me? She nodded. I'm gonna look at it just as soon as the doctor says I can look at things, he said, which made Ava Grace smile in the quiet way she smiled when something was exactly right. Paw settled into the armchair that had been positioned for him by Allison with hospital grade precision. The right height, the right light, a small table beside it with what he might need. She had researched post operative eye surgery recovery that morning and arranged accordingly. Nobody mentioned this, but everybody noticed. Andy had been in his room when Papaw arrived. He came into the living room approximately four minutes later, in the unhurried way of someone whose schedule was entirely self directed. He had a truck in one hand. He saw Papa in the armchair, and he stopped. He looked at Papa for a moment with the full, uncomplicated attention of a two year old taking inventory of the room. Papa Then he turned around and went back down the hallway. The room waited. He returned about thirty seconds later. He had traded the truck for his red ball, the good one, the favorite one. The one he gave to people when something in him decided they needed it. He crossed the living room with this particular toddling purpose, stopped in front of Papa's armchair and held the ball up with both hands. Ball, he said. Papa looked down at him, at the ball, at the small, serious face looking up with complete and uncomplicated love. Papa took the ball, held it in both hands for a moment, looked at it, and something moved across his face that was not quite a smile and not quite anything else, but was real and full, and came from somewhere deep. Thanks, buddy, said quietly. Andy, satisfied that the offering had been properly received, climbed up onto the footrest at Papa's feet. An operation that required some effort and no assistance, which was very clear, and sat beside Papa's legs with the easy confidence of someone who had simply decided this was where he was supposed to be. He looked around the room. Vr, he said, to new one in particular, and appeared content. Alison stood in the doorway and watched the whole thing. She sat down on the floor, then Anna sat beside her, then Addison, then Abra Grace. Four sisters on the living room floor watching their baby brother sit at their grandfather's feet like nothing had changed. Because for Andy, nothing had. Sunday came. Papapaw was well enough to rest comfortably at the house, and the family went to service and came back full of the particular warmth that a good Sunday morning leaves. Brother Thompson and Sister Beverly were near the church steps when the Jones family came out. They had become over the past several months, a familiar and settled sight. The two of them together, easy and unhurried, the courtship growing in the quiet, steady way that things grow when they're rooted right. Brother Thompson asked about papa. He had heard through the congregation the way news travels in church families, with care, with prayer, with covered dishes arriving at doors. How's he doing? He asked Dad. Better every day, Dad said. He's at the house resting. Andy won't leave his side. Brother Thompson smiled at that, a real one from somewhere genuine. That boy, he said, something about him. There he is, Dad agreed. Sister Beverly had her hand lightly on Brother Thompson's arm the way she stood with him now, naturally, without announcement. She looked at Dad. We've been praying for papa every day this week. Please tell him. I will, Dad said. He'll be glad to hear it. On the walk home, Anna fell into step beside Dad. Do you think Brother Thompson knows he looks like papa does sometimes? she said. Dad looked at her. Well what do you mean? Like he's not worried about anything, Anna said. Like he's just here, and it's enough. Dad walked half a block thinking about that. You know, he said finally, that's a very good thing to notice. Papa ate dinner with him that Sunday. He was at the table in the chair that had been quietly designated as his for the duration, which Alison had placed at the precise spot that avoided the window glare. He ate slowly and didn't say much, but his presence at the table made the room fuller than it had been all week. Andy sat his high chair directly across from Pawpaw and regarded him throughout dinner with the steady, approving attention of someone whose most important person had returned to his proper location. Dad's question moved around the table. Alison said she had been thinking about the card she wrote Papaw on Tuesday. I didn't know what to say, so I just wrote what was true, that I love him, and I was praying, and I I think that was right, but I also think I was writing it as much for me as for him. Pawpaw looked across the table at her. That's not a bad reason to write something. Addison said she had reorganized her room twice and it still wasn't right. I think I was trying to control something because everything felt out of order. Anna said I talked too much Monday and then I couldn't talk at all. I didn't know where the middle was. Ava Grace said she made the drawing because she needed to put the love somewhere outside of herself where it could be seen. Dad looked at Andy, who had just placed a piece of roll on top of his head and was waiting to see what would happen next. And Andy, Dad said, gave papa his ball and sat at his feet, and didn't treat him any differently than he does any other day. Papa made a sound, low and warm and a little unsteady. That boy walked up to me and handed me that ball, and I can't tell you he stopped, cleared his throat. He just looked at me like I was still me, like nothing had changed. The table was quiet. Because for him nothing had, Mom said gently. Papa nodded. That's what I mean. Dad reached for his Bible. They moved to the living room as the evening went gold through the windows. Papa was in his chair, Andy had resumed his position at papa's feet with the drumstick and a ball, tapping a slow, irregular rhythm against the footrest. Ava Grace sat on the floor close to Alison, and Alison had her binder closed. Addison sat with her legs tucked under her, Anna sat beside Mom on the couch, not quite touching, but real close. Dad read from Matthew chapter eighteen. He began at verse two. And Jesus called a little child unto him and set him in the midst of them. He looked up. Jesus didn't make a speech here, he brought a child into the middle of the room and said, Look at this. This is my point. He read verse three, and said, Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted and become as little children ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. And verse four Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Now Dad said, All week we've been watching Andy, and all week Andy has been the same. Not because he didn't love papa, he loves papa as much as any of you, but because he doesn't have the tools yet to carry fear forward. He can't project into next week or last Monday, he only has right now. And right now, Papaw is in his chair. And the ball belongs with papa, and the foot rest is exactly the right place to sit. Alison was very still. We were all trying to do something with the worry, organize it or talk over it or draw it or reorganize things that didn't need reorganizing. But Andy just went to him. Yes, Dad said. That's childlike faith. Not the absence of love, but the presence of trust. He didn't stand at the edge of the room being careful. He walked straight to Pawpaw and gave him the best thing he had. That's what trust does. It moves toward the thing it loves instead of managing the fear from a distance. Mom spoke softly. We can write the cards and make the drawings and those are beautiful things. But the moment Andy climbed up beside Paw and said vroom and just well just stayed. That said something none of the rest of us had figured out how to say yet. Anna looked at Andy, still tapping at the footrest. He said Bah and gave the ball. She said quietly, that was his whole sermon. Papa made a sound from his chair. Best one I've heard in a while. His voice was rough at the edges with something that wasn't pain. Addison looked at him. Are you really okay, papa? He looked back at her with his good eye, steady and warm. I'm really okay. The Lord kept me, and I've got this family around me. And that boy at my feet. He looked down at Andy, who had set down the drumstick and was leaning against papa's leg with his eyes drooping. Yeah. I'm fine. Dad prayed, he thanked God for keeping papa through the surgery and for the doctors and for the mercy of good news on a Monday that had started with fear. He thanked God for a two year old who walked into a room and showed the whole family what trust looks like when it hasn't been complicated yet. He asked that every person in the room would carry something of that forward. The going toward the giving the best thing you have, the sitting beside someone not because you know what to say, but because you know where you belong.

Andy had fallen asleep against papa's leg. Papa had one hand resting on the boy's back, light and still. The room held that for as long as it could. Monday had come in like weather. Thursday had been the turn. By Sunday evening something in the house that had been braced since the first phone call was quietly finally releasing. Alison carried papa's empty cup to the kitchen after devotion and stood at the sink for a moment. She thought about the card she had written on Tuesday, the careful handwriting, the true words. She had written it partly for herself. She knew that now. And that was okay. Sometimes you put love somewhere outside yourself because the inside of yourself is too full to hold it alone. She washed the cup and went back. Addison sat in her room before bed and looked at her space. It still wasn't quite right after two reorganizations. She looked at it for a long moment, then she decided, you know what? It's fine. It was her room. It's fine. She turned off the light. Anna found Mom in the kitchen and stood beside her without starting any of the four conversations she'd been saving. She just stood there. Mom put an arm around her. They stayed like that for a while, listening to the house settled around them. Ava Grace peeked into the living room before bed. Papaw was still in his chair. He had dozed off. Andy was still against his leg, also asleep, one small hand curled around the cuff of Papa's trousers like an anchor. Ava Grace looked at them for a long time. Then she went to bed with something full and settled in her chest that she didn't have worried for yet, but which felt very much like the answer to all the things she'd been carrying since Monday. Late that night mom sat in a chair by the bedroom window. The house was quiet, papa was in the guest room, resting, Andy was in his crib with his truck still in his hand, as always, the girls were settled. She thought about Monday morning, the mugs set down, the careful voice on the phone, the four faces in the kitchen doorway. She thought about Andy in the living room on Thursday, the way he had gone back for the ball, the way he had climbed up beside papa's legs without asking permission, the way he had said vroom and just stayed. She thought about what Dad had said, moving toward the thing you love instead of managing the fear from a distance. And she closed her eyes.

For keeping him, for the doctors, for Monday being over. For Andy, who walked straight to papa and handed him a ball and sat down like it was the most natural thing in the world. Because I suppose for him it was. He just knew where he belonged. She sat with that for a while, then she thought of something and almost smiled. She and Andy had the same instinct. When the room was heavy and the words weren't there, go toward. You've the best thing you have. Sit down beside the one you love and stay. She had been doing it her whole life without knowing just exactly what it was called. Maybe that was what childlike faith looked like in a grown woman. Not the absence of worry, but the knowing, even through the worry of where you belonged. She looked at the ceiling. Thank you, she said again, simple and full. Down the hall in the guest room, papa slept with the red ball on the nightstand where he had put it himself. Close enough to see it in the morning when the doctor said he could look at things again.
