Allison, Addison, Anna, Ava Grace, and little Andy, who somehow always managed to turn ordinary days into extraordinary adventures. Paw Paw has a story for you about your favorite family, the Joneses. It all began the week before Homecoming Sunday. The church was having its homecoming, a great gathering in with a visiting preacher who was a friend of the pastors, a service with every pew full and dinner on the grounds afterward beneath the trees. The pastor would give the welcome, the guest would bring the message, and there would be everyone promised more food than one long table could possibly hold. And Dad would make it all happen, mostly where no one could see. Dad was the pastor's assistant. He had not always been. Once he had been the principal at Glendale Christian Academy, the man whose name was painted on the office door, who stood at the front of chapel every morning, the one everyone looked to first. It had not been a bad thing to be. And then one day a few months ago, he had traded the front of the room for the back of it, and became instead the man who made sure the microphone worked and nobody went home hungry. The children had never quite understood why a person would choose such a thing. That week the signs of it were everywhere. If you knew how to look, Dad left early and came home late, the trunk of the car filled up with folding chairs. There was a small list tucked in his shirt pocket, and each evening a few more lines were crossed off. Addison was the one who noticed. Addison always noticed. Where Anna took in the whole loud sweep of a day, and Alison took in its schedule, Addison took in the details, the small, true things that other people walked straight past. She noticed that Dad had rubbed the scuff off his shoes, she noticed the list, and she noticed most of all that he seemed quietly happy about all of it. The way certain people are happy setting a beautiful table for guests they love. Ava Grace only asked one question about any of it. Is Dad in charge? Sort of, Mom said. He's the one who makes sure the people in charge can do their part. Ava Grace turned that over. So he's in charge of the part nobody sees. Mom looked at her for a moment. Yes, she said. That's it exactly. Homecoming Sunday came up bright and warm, the kind of day that seems to know it is special. And it was by every measure beautiful. The visiting preacher preached, and the people said amen, and the singing went up through the open windows and out over the parking lot. When it was over, the pastor stood up beaming and everyone spilled out onto the grounds, where the long tables waited under the trees already set, already perfect. Alison had her dessert table arranged exactly as her binder said it should be, pies grouped with pies and a small card standing in front of each one. Anna had counted the cars in the lot twice, arrived at two different numbers, and was now chiefly concerned with whether the line would reach the peach cobbler before it ran out. But Addison watched the day the way she watched everything, by its details. And the details were telling her a story that nobody else in the whole churchyard seemed to be reading. She saw the chairs in straight even rows and remembered Dad squaring them in the empty room the night before. She saw the guest preacher's water glass full and right at his elbow, and knew exactly whose hand had filled it. She saw the corner fan turning, the broken one, the one Dad had stayed late on Thursday to mend. She saw the cars outside everyone in its place, and the little hand lettered parking signs, and knew whose idea those had been. She saw Brother Thompson, too, in his good shirt, quietly carrying the other end of a folding table right alongside her father, the way he had been doing all week, and she saw Sister Beverly slip away from the busiest table to go and sit with old Sister May, who had been sitting by herself and fix her a plate without being asked. Twice Addison watched her father simply vanish for a minute and come back, once with a folding chair for an old man who hadn't found a seat, once with a cup of cold water for a mother holding a fussing baby in the heat. Nobody had sent him. He had just seen it, the way he always seemed to see things, and gone. And then Addison saw the other thing. She saw person after person find the pastor and shake his hand and thank him for a wonderful day. She saw them find the visiting preacher and thank him for the message. She heard them praise the food, the music, the flowers. And she watched them walk right past her father, who was at that very moment carrying yet another table to where one was needed. And not a single one of them thought to thank him at all. It began just slightly to bother her. She kept waiting for someone to notice, surely someone would. But the golden afternoon wore on, happy and loud, and the things kept landing everywhere except on the one person whose hands had touched every part of it. Addison felt something tighten in her chest, the particular ache of seeing a beautiful thing that no one else is bothering to look at. Didn't it bother Dad? It would surely have bothered her. Why didn't he say something? Addison carried it home with her. That evening she sat on the edge of her bed and went back over the whole day in her mind. The way she would study a painting, slowly, detail by detail. The squared chairs, the filled glass, the mended fan, the signs in the lot, her father moving through all of it like a thread you only notice once it has been pulled out. She thought about how hard she worked on the thing she made, how she could spend eight whole minutes on a single small detail because the detail was where the meaning lived. And she thought that's what Dad does. He fills a whole day with little careful details. And then he lets everybody enjoy them without ever once pointing and saying I did that. It seemed to Addison like something beautiful was being made and then turning it around to face the wall. She didn't understand it, and not understanding a thing bothered Addison more than almost anything else in the world. She found him on the back step after dark the way she sometimes did when a thing would not leave her alone. Dad, she said, sitting down beside him, doesn't it bother you? Does what bother me, sweetheart? So she told him all of it. The chairs, the glass, the fan, the signs, how she had watched the whole day and seen everything he did and how nobody else had, and how not one person had thanked him, not even once. Her voice went a little fierce by the end of it on his behalf. Dad was quiet for a moment. He didn't get upset. If anything, he seemed touched that she had seen. You know, he said, I used to sit up front months ago. Principal's chair, name on the door, a whole chapel looking my way every morning. He smiled a little at the memory. It wasn't a bad thing. But I noticed something up there. From the front of the room, all you can see is the people who were looking at you. Well what changed? Addison asked. One day I sat in the back. Dad said, and I realized the back is the best seat in the house. Because from the back you can see everybody. You can see who is struggling to find a seat. You can see whose glass is empty, you can see what needs doing before anyone has to ask. He looked out at the darkyard. Turns out I'd rather see the people than be seen by them. From the kitchen window Mom had been listening without quite meaning to. She didn't say anything either. She only rested a hand for a moment on Addison's shoulder on her way past, the way mom did when she wanted you to know that a thing was true. Addison sat quiet, turning it all over. But you worked so hard, she said, and nobody knew. Somebody knew, Dad said gently. Who? And Dad did not answer that one right away. He simply looked up. The same direction that Landy was always looking. And Addison understood him without his having to say a word at all. Inside, Dad reached for the Bible that was never far from him and turned to a place near the front of it, where a man named John the Baptist had once had great crowds of his own. He read. John had people coming from everywhere just to hear him, Dad said. And when Jesus came along, John didn't try to hold on to his crowd. He pointed every last one of them toward someone greater, and he was glad to do it. That was the whole job. He decreased so the Lord could increase. He turned some pages toward the back. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men. Colossians three and twenty three. Not unto men, Addison, Ned said. That's the part that sets a person free. If I did all of it for the thank you, and then a day with no thank you would be a day wasted. He closed the book. But I didn't do it for them. I did it for the Lord. And he doesn't miss a single straight chair. Addison thought about a glass filled before anyone was thirsty, about a fan mended on a Thursday night when there was no one in the room to see. About a father who watches in secret. So it wasn't turned to face the wall, she said slowly, mostly to herself. What's that? Nothing, Addison said. But it wasn't nothing. It had simply turned all the way back around. The next week, the church held its vacation Bible school, and on the last evening there was the usual happy wreckage. Paper scraps and glue and what looked like three hundred tiny cups left behind in the fellowship hall after everyone had gone home. Addison stayed. She did not announce it. She did not ask whether anyone had noticed she was staying, she simply found a broom that was taller than she was, and started in one corner where the most had been spilled, sweeping the little drifts of construction paper confetti into a pile, lining the chairs back up into the straight even rows she had watched her father make. She tied off the trash bag, she wiped the long tables until they shone. It wasn't glamorous work. Nobody clapped. When she finished, the room simply looked the way a clean room looks, as though nothing had ever happened in it at all, which was she was beginning to understand the entire point. The best work was the kind that left no fingerprints but the Lord's. She felt something she had not expected. Not pride exactly, something quieter and better. A kind of gladness with the door closed softly on it. She did not know that across the hall her father had paused in a doorway with an armload of supplies and seen the whole thing, and said nothing at all. But he smiled. On the way home Addison was quiet in the back seat, but it was a settled quiet now, not a tight one. The injustice she had felt on Sunday had come untied somewhere along the way. She saw now that she'd had it backwards. The sad thing would not have been a day without thanks, the sad thing would have been a day doing all of it for the thanks in the first place, and missing the better, quieter gladness waiting underneath. Her father caught her eye in the mirror. He said nothing about the fellowship hall. He never would. But he gave her the smallest nod, one noticer of details to another, and Addison felt seen in exactly the way that does not need a crowd. It struck her then that her father had been giving her that same quiet nod her whole life, for a hundred small things she had done and long since forgotten, and that she had simply never thought to call it being seen. She looked out the window at the dark trees going by and decided that the back, after all, really was the best seat in the house. Ava Grace, already in her pajamas, summed up the entire afternoon in the way that only she could. Dad does the part nobody sees, she said, so everybody else gets to see the good part. Then she yawned and leaned against mom. Andy, who had been delighted all week long simply because the word pastor kept coming up, toddled over and handed Dad a single wooden block very solemnly, for no reason anyone could name block, he said. Dad accepted it, as though it were the finest gift in all the world, because to Andy it was. Your dad found the secret, Mom said. The folks who serve where nobody's looking, well, those are the ones the Lord can hardly take his eyes off of. She smiled, leaned over, and kissed Dad on the cheek. Now, who's ready for brownies?
