SCARLET ORANGE BROWN

Ohio Football Breakdown: Buckeyes Rolling, Browns & Bengals Battle

Ken Carpenter and Chris Huesman Season 1 Episode 3

Football fever has taken over the Buckeye State, and our latest episode delivers the comprehensive coverage you deserve. We dive deep into Ohio State's scorching 2-0 start, where they've dominated opponents 84-7 behind Julian Sane's near-perfect passing and a defense that's been nothing short of spectacular. Despite significant coaching changes and new personnel, the Buckeyes haven't missed a beat, suggesting their ceiling remains sky-high as Big Ten play approaches.

The upcoming matchup against Ohio University has Vegas setting a five-touchdown spread, but our hosts predict a more competitive affair. While still forecasting a convincing Buckeyes victory (44-17 or 48-17), we explore why the Bobcats' recent upset over West Virginia and the emotional charge of an in-state rivalry could make this more interesting than expected.

We also dissect the Browns-Bengals showdown that saw Joe Flacco throw for nearly 300 yards in a losing effort while Joe Burrow struggled with just 113 passing yards yet emerged victorious. Cleveland's secondary impressed by containing Cincinnati's elite receivers, but drops and special teams failures proved costly. Meanwhile, the Bengals' defense, particularly linebacker Logan Wilson, stepped up in a major way—something our Bengals expert notes hasn't always happened when Burrow has an off day. Looking ahead to Week 2, we offer predictions for the Browns' challenging trip to Baltimore and Cincinnati's home opener against Jacksonville, complete with betting insights that went perfect in Week 1.

Here's your hosts coming to you live from the Dublin bubble Chris Huseman and Ken Carpenter.

Speaker 2:

Hello and welcome to another episode of the SOB podcast, also known as Scarlet, orange and Brown. I'm host Ken Carpenter. I'm Chris Huseman, the Buckeyes, you know. Let's take a look at their first uh, their first two games. I mean, this past week. Sand was uh near perfect four tds, the, the young running back, bo jackson, had 108 yards, nine different buckeyes had tds and the defense was lights out as expected. What are your thoughts, Chris, after two games with the Buckeyes?

Speaker 3:

Well, I mean, you're talking about Texas, the Grambling State. You know we've outscored our opponents 84-7. At this point, the defensive dominant, the growth potential that I see with this team, is there. Julian Sane completed his first 16 passes in that game, had the longest pass play in the stadium history of 87 yards, 18 and 19,. I think he was Kenny for 306 yards and five TDs. I think it was in the first half. I just think that these guys are just. They didn't skip a beat from last year.

Speaker 3:

With all of the new coaches coming in, with the new personnel coming in, you got some transfers, like you know. I think we have a kid from Rice that Ethan Onawa, the tackle. We have Logan George, defensive end that is supposed to be the real deal who hadn't played yet, but he's ready any day now. He's from Idaho State and you know, I think we got all these different pieces and I think Ryan Day is trying to figure things out and I think once we get into the big 10 schedule, man, we're just going to take off. I love it well we've got.

Speaker 2:

Uh, at least when I checked yesterday, the buckeyes were favored by five touchdowns. I personally think that it's going to be a lot closer than a five touchdown game. Huey, what's your thoughts as far as a score for the Buckeyes?

Speaker 3:

Michael Molnar is the starting linebacker, middle linebacker than Mike for Ohio University and he's leading the team in tackles and he was player of the week for the Bobcats coming in, and you know, these guys are pretty good. Well, I think it's going to be that in-state rivalry game. We really don't have an in-state rival to mention, but Ohio University. I remember the last time we played Ohio University they had a linebacker from DeSales named Tommy Weilbacher, and this kid was a real deal and, um, he was had a chip on his shoulder, um, about the, you know, not being recruited, and I think we were down at halftime against ou. Um, you remember the bobcat went over and tackled brutus and, uh, you know, all these things happen. I mean, you just never know what you're going to get with a game like this.

Speaker 3:

I too think that five touchdowns might be a little generous, but you know, at the end of the day, we're talking about the Ohio State Buckeyes here. I mean number one team in the land. They haven't even begun to, you know, scratch their potential. It very well could be a blowout, but I'm just thinking that these kids from Athens are going to try. I mean, they had a big upset victory at Peden Field down there against West Virginia last week. So you know they're riding high. Who knows my prediction? If you're asking me to pin a prediction on this, I would say Ohio State 44, ou 17.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I got them winning 48-17. And to transition, we had to see Cleveland and Cincinnati play this weekend and Flacco nearly 300 yards. Defense was strong for Cleveland. They had the rookie tight end get 63 yards but, like you talked about earlier special teams, they missed a couple field goals and had two big turnovers. And Joe Burrow, 113 yards, is probably the worst game he'll have all season and but as a Cleveland fan, it's almost like you're like. I'm not surprised. Here are your thoughts.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah, I you know some of the things that I just mental notes that I jotted down to was, you know, the Browns. Their wide receiver room is shaky. It's unproven. We saw that they had four drops, two of them turned into interceptions, which changed the game. The best player I think on the field for the Browns offensively was that Dylan Sampson out of Bowling Green. I mean, they had no answer for that guy. The DBs are excellent. They're very, very good. They held Chase and T and I don't even think the third receiver, I don't even think he had a reception.

Speaker 3:

I think Flacco was good but he threw 45 passes. That's tough. And the O-line DeJuan Jones out of Ohio State, I think he struggled with Cincinnati's defensive ends, shamar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson, I think, put a lot of pressure on. I think the tight end Fannin was superb. He had nine targets for 63 yards. The kicking game woes continued in Cleveland Missed extra point, missed 36-yard field goal, which ended up being the difference in the game. Judkins is signed now, so we'll see if that running back room changes. But then outside still you got things like Cleveland's in a stadium litigation with the city over the move to Brook Park, so they got that looming over their heads, too, as well, so there's a lot of things going on in Cleveland that they need to clean up.

Speaker 2:

Well, huey, I got to ask you. I want to. I want to run this by you. You're you know, you're a lifelong Bengals fan O'Burrow 113 yards. I mean, obviously that's not going to be the case the rest of the season, but what do you think he'd do differently, or the Bengals could do differently, to get him on track and get him going?

Speaker 3:

Well, I think we've seen it over Joe Burrow's career that he's a slow starter. You know, ugly win is better than a pretty loss, I guess you can say. And the thing I'm excited about, to be honest with you, with Cincinnati, is normally we don't win those games If Joe's off. Our defense usually doesn't step up in that situation. And man oh man, that defense from Al Golden was huge and I'm just going to go out and say it right now. How Logan Wilson, our middle linebacker, is not an all-pro is beyond me, because that guy is everywhere on the field. He's in on every tackle. I think keeping Chuck Burks, our secondary coach, was huge, because those young guys out there in the secondary Jordan Battle, dj Turner, all those guys really showed promise.

Speaker 3:

I think the O line needs some work and some timing, which is going to come. I mean, they had their left guard, patrick, go down and you know Risner stepped in. Thank God we picked him up from Minnesota. But it's a concern. The O-line's always a concern for me. Right now I think the running backs are fine. Chase Brown's good, even though he only had 43 yards. You know, sanjay Pirine is just a consummate professional. He's going to be there as a third down back. But I think Shamar Stewart is going to be unbelievable. You put him with Trey Hendrickson and it's just going to be a very, very good duo. But I think, you know, just like coach said, he said hey, you know, just like uh, um, uh, the coach said, he said hey, you know, you're going to really see a big change in our offense against Jacksonville. So I'm excited for the fact that we can go to an owner and uh, uh and jump up in this division and I'm just excited to see what's going to happen Sunday.

Speaker 2:

Well, I'm going to ask you then I got Jacksonville. Is that a game they win?

Speaker 3:

I think it's a game they win. You know we've always had good luck against Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville and first game we're in the jungle. You know I like our chances. You know people are talking about it's going to be a close game. I don't think it's going to be a close game. I think Cincinnati is going to win 28-14, and I think we're going to roll from there and we're going to start to get things on track.

Speaker 2:

Well going into, since we're talking about this week's games. The Browns get the Ravens. That is one that you know obviously a tough game at it's going to be at Baltimore, and I think that it's going to be even tougher the fact that I think the NFL could have done something about it, but they didn't. But Baltimore celebrating their 30th anniversary of of getting the the team from the Browns, I guess and so a little jab at Cleveland there at the end. I think Cleveland's going to get the game and they're going to be better than anything, but I think Baltimore's going to end up taking that one. Chris, what do you think about that one?

Speaker 3:

Well, I kind of agree with you there. The thing that I like is that the game is going to start out 11-1 to nothing when you're talking against the spread. So I'm taking Cleveland all day with the spread on that. I don't think. As you can see last week, baltimore has the I don't know what it is about hardballball team, but they cannot close a game and um 11 and a half to the browns. Uh, joe flacco, former brown or former raven quarterback, uh, it's just the way it's setting up. I just think the browns you know they're too good in their secondary to let Zay Flowers and all and these guys just run rampant out there. And you saw what they did against T Higgins and Chase, arguably the best wide receiver duo in the NFL. So I like Cleveland plus 11 and a half and I also like San Francisco minus three against New Orleans.

Speaker 3:

I think those were the locks that I like right now. We were undefeated last week, kenny, in our picks. You called Cleveland in the spread and you got that one. I called New York Jets in the spread and got that in Washington. We both had Washington too as well. And I call up New Orleans getting getting beat by um, uh, the team, yeah, the team that they played. So, um, we're doing pretty good on our spread picks yes, I, I've got my locks being the bills.

Speaker 2:

uh, with the Jets and uh, you know, if there's a, a game that's gonna be fun to watch, I think it's gonna be the Command and Packers, because the Packers are definitely better than I thought they were going to be, so it's going to be fun to watch those guys go at it this weekend.

Speaker 3:

I think next week, you know it's going to be a pivotal week too a lot for the NFL Anytime, like, for example, the AFC North. You know we have two team, it's typical. You know, one thing that I didn't realize was how good aaron rogers was going to be. Um, I did not see that happening. I did not see joe flacco coming out throwing 45 passes and being you know what do you have? 290, some yards, five yards. I didn't see that.

Speaker 3:

And, um, you know, I said our two young guys would dominate, and Burrow and Lamar Jackson. And you know, here Burrow threw for 113 yards. So I guess there's something to be said for experience and the old guys. You know, fill one up for the old guys. You know, and I just don't know, can you sustain that? You know it's good, seattle team's coming into pittsburgh. Um, you know pittsburgh's banged up right now. Um, you know, uh, cincinnati's playing jacksonville. Uh, tennessee titans look good against, uh, against denver, and they gave denver and bo nicks all they wanted on that game. So you know, there, there, there's some surprises out there and out there, and I'm just excited to see what's going to happen.

Speaker 2:
