Ohio Football Dominance: Buckeyes Rolling, Bengals Revived, Browns Stirring

Ken Carpenter and Chris Huesman Season 1 Episode 9

Ohio just turned up the volume. We kick off with the Buckeyes throttling Wisconsin 34–0 and the bye week arriving right on time. A Heisman-level quarterback pace, elite receiver play, and a defense allowing scraps have Ohio State looking like a true title contender. The question we chase: can the run game and offensive line hold when the box is loaded and the clock is the opponent? We map the Penn State matchup, push back on the old SEC speed myth, and talk about how NIL parity has tightened the national gap.

Cincinnati’s win over Pittsburgh felt like a mood shift. Joe Flacco’s fast decisions and rhythm throws neutralized the rush, Jamar Chase dominated targets, and the line kept the pocket clean. We dissect how the Bengals can keep that efficiency when the league gets more tape, why bracket shells create seams for tight ends and slot shots, and how the remaining schedule could set up a real AFC North climb. We also put the hot-hand conversation on the table: if Burrow’s healthy in December and Flacco is rolling, what would you do?

Cleveland brought the clarity fans needed: a defense-led rout of Miami, a pick-six that broke the game open, and a ground attack that finished drives. New England will test that formula with disciplined run fits, so Dylan Gabriel must win with timing and ball security while role receivers deliver in traffic. We lay out the path to a gritty road win, then jump into our play-or-sit debates—Reese vs Styles, Chase vs Flacco, Miles Garrett vs anyone—and close with our upset and lock picks for the week.

If you enjoyed the candor and the strategy talk, follow the show, share it with an Ohio football friend, and drop a review with your boldest upset pick for next weekend.

Tune in every week for a new episode!

SPEAKER_00:

Welcome to the covered or bringing podcast, the show that brings you the best of Ohio football every single week. From the Ohio State Buckeye to the Cincinnati Bengals to the Cleveland Browns, we've got every inch of the Buckeye State covered. Insight, action, and plenty of bold opinions. Because here it's all football, all Ohio, all the time. Here's your host coming to you live from the Dublin bubble, Chris Husman and Ken Carpenter.

SPEAKER_04:

Hello, welcome to the SOB Scarlet, Orange, and Brown Podcast. I'm your host, Coach Ken Carpenter.

SPEAKER_01:

I'm Chris Usman. I'm Jake Carpenter.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, we're going into this week, and we decided to add a third to the podcast, and someone who's uh very opinionated about the uh Cleveland Browns and the Buckeyes. So it's uh my son Jake. Jake, welcome to the show. We uh as always start off with the uh kind of a quick recap. Ohio State, 34-0 over Wisconsin. They're going into a bye week this week, and the following week is the Franklin Less, Penn State, Nenny Lyons. Cincinnati Bengals, 33-31 winners over the Pittsburgh Steelers. And up next, I got a tough one, the New York Jets. Cleveland Browns. Hold on to your hats here. 31-6 winners over Miami. Now they travel to the New England Patriots. Start off with the Buckeyes, Huey. What's your thoughts?

SPEAKER_01:

7-0. Right? It's always good to be undefeated. And uh I'm just saying, Justin's saying, 393 yards, four TDs uh on the season. He's got 80% um completion rate. Uh he's got 19 TDs and only um uh three interceptions. So um he's definitely a Heisman contender um at this point. I think he's sitting beside uh behind Ty Simpson, uh the quarterback for Alabama, uh Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback for IU, Indiana. Um, you know, that that QBR of 88.4, 1900 passing yards. Um, you know, he's just uh he's a real deal right now. Anytime you got Tate and Smith um as your whiteouts, um they're pretty much elite. Um I think they combined it with whiskey for 15 receptions, 208 yards, and two TDs. Um the I think the tight end game is strong with Claire and Casmark. Um the running game is what I'm concerned about. I don't know about you guys, but to me that's a weakness. Um, and I think the O-line um is a big reason for that. I think the O-line had the worst game of the season, um Daniels, um Shibala, um, those guys graded out the lowest they've had all year. Um, but the good news is the defense. Um the defense is elite, um, lowest amount of points given up since uh Florida State in 1993 or 1994, where I can't remember. Um, and I think that's 43 points. Uh Matt Patricia just looks like he's having fun out there. Um 5.9 points a game he's given up. And um, yeah, you know, this but to me, this bye week is gonna be huge for us because we can focus on those things, like getting our O-line straight and getting our running game going. Um, you know, because we've got that big Penn State game, like you said, Kenny, coming up November 1st.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, I saw that Jeremiah Smith was interviewed this week and he made the statement that he thinks that this year's team's better than last year's team. So that's saying something. I think that he's really focused on trying to go back to back. But if you look at the stats between Jeremiah and uh Carnell Tate, Jeremiah's got 49, 602 yards, seven TDs. Tate, 34 receptions, 587 yards, six TDs. I think if when it's all said and done, you know, I think Tate's gonna end up uh having to buy Jeremiah beer when it comes draft time because when he gets all the focus on him, Jeremiah, uh Tate just uh takes over. So he he's going to be a first-round draft pick now at this point. But my uh my biggest question is what happens in a close game and we have to run the football? Jake, what are you thinking on on the buck guys?

SPEAKER_05:

Um I you know, Chris, I can't really agree with you much. I think there's not really a weakness in in the Ohio State game right now, um, from everything that I'm seeing, you know, just being a fan watching. It's um, you know, I I think the you know the biggest thing that I noticed, especially on the defensive side, is that the line has just looked so much better than last year, even with two draft picks um in JT. Um, and um uh and so I think just you know, the line play on the defensive side, being able to get to the ball, get to the quarterback, um, and really just stopping the run just sets up our offense so well um that we really don't have to work that hard in the running game or you know, in pass protection because Julian can kind of move out of the pocket and um start off with great field position because we're we're forcing punts and uh we're making them work for it.

SPEAKER_04:

So really with the Buckeyes, you know, obviously you think the line's a trouble and and and they really can't make up their mind who the running back's gonna be. I I I'm in the bo uh the Bo Jackson camp, but I if you're if you're starting a game, who you who you running out there at running back?

SPEAKER_01:

I like this West kid. Um did you see that West kid come in and there at the um halfway through the game? And man, he was cutting, he looked big, he looked like he had some size. Um and I was like, I saw a different gear there for a second, and I had to look. I'm like, who's that? You know, which one of the three was that? And it was none of them. Um, you know, and I've I'd kind of like to see that kid a little bit too. I mean, you know, I know I know you made all these NIL promises to, you know, the other guys and so on and so forth, but you know, at the end of the day, if we want to win a Natty and we're gonna, you know, and that's our goal at Ohio State, is we gotta have a running game to do that. Uh not every game, Justin or um Julian Saiyan's gonna go back there and you know be whatever he was, 34 for 38. Uh something like you know, is just ridiculous behind the line. And you know, we we have to have that running game to complement it.

SPEAKER_04:

Yes, I totally agree. We gotta we gotta get that. And the uh Jake, the upcoming game is Penn State. They don't have James Franklin, and their quarterback is that done for the season, and there was a lot of promise going into the season. Is Penn State a game that they could slip up and lose?

SPEAKER_05:

Absolutely not. Um, I think that slip up game would have happened this past weekend against Wisconsin at Wisconsin and Camp Randall definitely didn't happen. Um I really think the same scenario is gonna happen here in Penn State. Um, you know, just a just a program in shambles. I mean, they're they're have you know they're losing close games to you know different opponents now, and it's just it's really looking like a program without an identity. Um, and it it seems like Ohio State's peaking at the right time, so I don't see it, I don't see an upset in the foreseeable future for Ohio State.

SPEAKER_04:

Well you let's stay in with you know, if you watch ESPN, there's clearly uh an SEC bias. Do you think that the Buckeyes would have trouble with the Alabama and uh the Georgia Bulldogs?

SPEAKER_01:

No, um I don't. I mean, and I think we proved that last year. We put that to bed. Um, you know, all I heard, you know, for years and years and years, we never got the chance to really prove it was you know, the SEC speed is is is a different level. Um and you know, I yeah, it's it's unbelievable. But uh to me, we have um, you know, just like Jake said, I think we have all three phases of the game. You know, I can nitpick and pull out some stuff. That's just you know, buckey's being buckeyes. I mean, we we all know that we can nitpick Ohio State, you know, to the nth degree. Um, but you know, when you start comparing us to other programs out there, and I I was even watching the Joel Clatt show uh yesterday, you guys, and you know, he said it best to me. He said, Um, you know, they were like, is a Big Ten um uh team going to win, you know, the the Natty for the third year in a row? And he was like, Yes, um, because the NILs um have even the playing field. Um, and and I think I even mentioned this last week, Kenny. You know, the NILs um, you know, this is something that's not new. I mean, they were doing this in the SEC for a long time, you know, the last 20-some years, 30, 40-some years they were doing this in the SEC. Um, it's just now everybody's caught up. And what they've done is they've they've called it name image likeness. And, you know, we're gonna play the game now. And, you know, it's that old saying, you know, just you know, don't hate the player, hate the game. And I think we've done a good job of you know managing our NILs. And with that being said, I think that puts us um right there, if not better, than you know, the elite of the SEC.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, I want to play a little game here, and we're gonna do it for all three teams. And the first one, it's uh the Michigan game. You gotta play one guy and you gotta sit the other guy. Jake, we'll start with you. Play or sit? Arvell Reese or Sonny Styles.

SPEAKER_05:

I mean, Arvell's on a heater right now. I mean, just the way that he gets after the quarterback is unbelievable. Um, I I think the the way that he moves in between the line is just it really is an NFL talent. Um so I'm gonna I'm gonna have to start Arvell.

SPEAKER_04:

Really?

SPEAKER_01:

That is um that's really good. Um, I would say with the weakness at our linebacking um depth is what I'm talking about. I would probably start Sonny Styles because I think we have you know Kenyatta, we have um, you know, other people that can maybe be step in for that. So, you know, to me, Sonny Styles is one of those guys that's just a guy that can go from sideline to sideline. Um I like him, you know. I don't know what it is about him, but he stands out for me.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah, you can't go wrong with either one, but if I had to make a choice, I would probably start Rvell just because he I mean all the NFL teams are saying he's gonna be a top ten pick, so I'm gonna go with Rvell. Let's move on. Yui to your team, the Cincinnati Bengals. Sitting at three and four. And I believe I said it uh Cincinnati fans are gonna be happy with Joe Flacco when he comes rolling in there with that beard and all. 342 yards, three TDs, 16 throws to Jamar Chase for 161 yards.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, it was uh Pittsburgh Steelers. Yeah, icing on the cake. Um, it was uh one of those things when I sat down in my uh my bonus room in the recliner, and I'm like, let's settle in and watch this butt whoop in here. Um and it was anything but I mean, if you ask me, we outplayed them the whole entire game and typical Bingle uh Pittsburgh fashion, they take the lead late, but 52-yard game-winning drive by Joe Flacco. Um, you know, I even looked for a jersey this week um for it. But um, you know, some things I didn't I saw out there that I haven't seen in a long time was smiles. People laughing, having a good time playing. Uh hell Zach Taylor was even laughing, having a good time um over there too. So yeah, you're right. You mentioned his stats, Kenny. Uh Chase was unstopped. I think they targeted him 22 times, which is a record too as well, uh, at least this year. Um Higgins is um unstoppable for number two. Um Chase Brown went over 100 yards. Um and I want to say P Ryan had almost 50. Um and McPherson looks like he's confident and he's back. No offense just stepping up since uh we had our uh our other starting tight end go down. Um the defense to me is the one stepping up uh as well. I I take that back. The defense in the O-line, uh O-line has only given up once two sacks in the last two games. And I think that um is in fact that Joe Flacco um I had it written down here somewhere, Kenny, but he was um 2.3 seconds was the longest he held the ball. Uh, even even with Watt and Um, you know, Furbit, all those guys that they have, you know, over there on that defensive end room for Pittsburgh. I mean, you know, 2.3 seconds is not a lot of time to get to the quarterback, you know, especially when there's a 330-pound man in front of you. So um I think they did a great job. And the thing I stressed, and we talked about this last week, Kenny, was you know, he's 6'6. I mean, you talk about a guy that can really over you know, look over the line and you know just see what's going on. Um, I'm I don't know what Dylan Gabriel is. I don't know, Jake. Maybe you know how tall he is. Uh but um at the same time, uh my wife just gave me a look. I don't know. Um but yeah, but anyway, I just think him looking over the line is just such an advantage. Um, I think Zach tailored the offense to him um getting the ball out quick. If you noticed it was slant, slant, slant, out, out, out. And then once they started to bracket, and when I say bracket, uh you got Chase on this side, and you got T on this side, and they're gonna put two safeties over top of them with the cornerback that's got them. So that's a bracket. So it leaves the middle of the field wide open, and I think that's when he hit Ios uh Iosovac on that deep ball down the middle. So, you know, you just he's just such a savvy veteran. Um, but we do need um we do need Trey back. Um, we we didn't get uh I don't know if we sacked Aaron Rodgers at all, but we need to get that pressure um on him. Uh the linebacking's still a concern for me. They got that night kid who is just a fabulous athlete out of South Carolina, um, but he's still young. Um Logan Wilson has been non-existent. He did show up a couple plays uh for us. Our linebacking room needs to get better. Um, but I just I've been impressed with our offensive line the past two weeks. That was, you know, everybody rags on uh the Bengals in their offensive line. Well, they've only given up um two sacks in the past two weeks. And, you know, uh overall, hey, a season, uh season saving win over our arch rival, um, Pittsburgh. Uh so yeah, you know, um I'm pretty happy about it. You know, I love seeing Mike Tomlin over there with his uh Stone Cold Stare and you know, all those things. And then I love reading on um social media all the Pittsburgh um people fire Tomlin now and all you know, I just love seeing that, and that's what should happen after the Bengals beat the Steelers.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, Jake, you know, you being a big Browns fan. If you watch the end of the uh the Bengals game, they were doing interviews on the field and there was a good-sized group of people in the stands that were saying chanting, thank you, Cleveland. Obviously talking about Joe Flacco. What's your take on the Bengals?

SPEAKER_05:

I got a lot of opinions about the Bengals there, Dan. Um I I really think this is a uh this is a tape issue. Um, you know, there's not a lot of tape of Joe Flacco on the Bengals. Um I I can't wait till he runs into uh to an opponent that has weeks to prepare for his type of scheme um and um and ways to keep him in the pocket because boy, he is almost as immobile as any quarterback in the NFL today. Um so I I I think they're gonna run into some issues when they start to you know get some more film out on him. Um and you know, realistically, I I don't put the Bengals, you know, this is gonna sound crazy to say from my perspective, but I don't put them very far behind where the Browns are right now. Um as far as talent goes, and as far as um uh you know, we have a far superior defense, and you know, if the offense starts clicking on the Browns side, then I think we're gonna be right there with with the Bengals come come time for the AFC North. Um and it's you know, that's the thing too with the AFC North. It's anyone's game now. I mean, uh if the if the Steelers would have beat the Bengals, I think it would have um, you know, would have they would have pulled away and it would have been really hard to catch them. But I think you know what the Bengals did on Thursday night, they they they brought the entire AFC North um kind of up a notch and and and really being able to compete for that that AFC North title come week week 17, week 18.

SPEAKER_04:

So well Huey, the Bengals are going to uh they're they're playing the New York Jets this week, and their owner, Woody, I almost said Harrelson, but Johnson, he said, we would just like to have a quarterback that could complete a pass.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. I I saw that yesterday. So what did they just run away from the Jets or is this gonna be one of those things where the Jets It's almost like um, you know, uh the Denver coach, um his name escapes me. Sean Payton and uh Russell Wilson getting into you know a tweet war uh back and forth. And you know, it's like you know, if you're the owner of the Jets, you want to look at that. And you know, Russell Wilson doesn't say anything to anybody. You know, I mean he doesn't tweet. He does, you know, it's not like Russell Wilson's out there beating up his girlfriends and you know, saying all these things, and and you know, he's always something, you know, is going on. He he's always drawing attention to himself by what he's wearing to the game. Yeah, that's not Russell Wilson. And, you know, for him to say something like that, um, you know, that was that was pretty crazy. Uh same thing with um, you know, the Jets. I mean, when you had Woody Johnson say that um about our former Buckeye quarterback, Fields, um, you know, Fields is another guy. He's not he's not gonna be flashy, he's not gonna do all those things that draws attention to himself. He's a man of God, and he's just uh out there just trying to do his job. And at some point, the Jets are gonna have to look at themselves and you know, discover why you know Aaron Rodgers doing what he's doing right now with Pittsburgh, and he couldn't do that in the for the Jets. So, you know, there's a lot of things going on in my mind. Yeah, I just read where Tyrod Taylor's hurt now. So uh he was supposed to start this weekend. So you know, it's like what do you do? You you turn back to Justin Fields and say, hey, you know, we we do have confidence in you. You know, you you're a quarterback now. I mean, if five fields, I'm like, all right, thanks. Yeah, I really yeah, I really feel that. But you know, I at this point in time, I would definitely take the Bengals and and minus six and a half points on that. And um the thing I like about the Bengals, and Jake was talking about the schedules and things like that too, but is I like the Bengals schedule the way it shapes up. Um I don't know if you've looked at Baltimore's schedule or if you looked at Pittsburgh's schedule, they're both gauntlets. And um I haven't looked too much into Cleveland's schedule at this point in time, but um, you know, I know the Bengals schedule uh does get easier. There's only a couple games in there. We're at the Bills, um, and you know, we're um maybe another one that's um, you know, a little iffy, but I think the schedule shapes up for us. And if we can play like we did Thursday night, I don't see too many teams beating us.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, you know, the the Jets could do a midweek trade for Flacco.

SPEAKER_01:

I don't think I don't think we're gonna let them go. Well let's uh let's put Jake Jake Yeah let's uh play the game with this one.

SPEAKER_04:

You gotta have a big win to get into the playoffs. You gotta play one and set the other. Jake the player said Jamar Chase or Joe Flacco.

SPEAKER_05:

Oh that's a crazy one. That's a crazy one. Uh listen, I'll I'll probably take Jamar Chase only because he he he he could lead the team in tackling and also receptions if Jake Browning were to come back into the game. He could do a little two-way since they uh little flashback to a couple weeks ago. But I'll take Jamar.

SPEAKER_01:

I agree. I I would uh you gotta play Jamar Chase because in his own words, I'm always bleeping open. Um and it doesn't matter if it's Jake Browning back there trying to throw to him. I mean he had over a hundred-yard game with him and uh same thing with Flacco, but you know, um you know I don't know what it is about quarterbacks in Cincinnati named Joe, but um you know they they did a good job.

SPEAKER_04:

Well, I think I would I would uh start Flacco and Sid Chase and just rely heavily on uh T. Higgins and uh the running game. So let's move on to the 2-5 Cleveland Browns. I gotta say, realistically, they should be three and four. They missed a field goal, that would be a whole different uh subject line up there in Cleveland if they were three and four. Um first time scoring over 17 points in the last 12 games. We now have uh a quarterback battle between Quinshawn Judkins and Dylan Gabriel. Judkins had uh three TDs. Two of them, I believe, were out of the Wildcat. But you know, you gotta give us credit. Tua did give us three interceptions and um you know the uh the coach there for for the uh Miami Dolphins here, he he kind of had that look of the unibomber with the cold weather up here in Cleveland was not was definitely not end of the game. They um they got a game that I think could be a win, but they are going to New England. Uh and and I think that uh the quarterback Drake May is doing really well up there, and I think that it's going to be a very tough game to come away with a win. Jake, your thoughts.

SPEAKER_05:

Yeah, no, I uh you know, I the New England game's gonna be a true test. If we can come out of that with a win, I think the season's ahead of us. Um I know that sounds crazy to say coming from where we've been. Um, but New England's gonna present a pretty tough challenge. Um they they they stopped the run really well. I think they're in the top five in the NFL stopping the run, and that's what we do best on offense. And um, you know, we we we really need Dylan Gabriel to step up in a big way, kind of like he did with his two touchdown passes against the Vikings a few weeks ago. Uh, we're gonna need him to throw touchdown passes. We're gonna need uh, you know, Jerry G is gonna have to hang on to the ball. Um and then you know, some Ung Sung heroes are gonna have to emerge from the the wide receiver room like Gage Larber Dan, he's gonna have to step up, um, you know, Jamari Thrash, you know, you know, those some of those guys that you may not hear on the broadcast all the time. They're gonna have to step up and make big plays. Um, but I think, you know, if if if we can hold it to a low-scoring game like we've been doing this whole year, um, you know, with our opponents, I think it really give us, gives ourselves a chance. But we gotta we gotta contain Drake May. Um, he's super versatile on the edges. You know, he can get outside and make plays happen on play action and you know, scramble drill, and um, you know, he can run the ball really well. And um, you know, he knows how to find his receivers. And and that's the thing. Like the Patriots don't even have that great receivers, right? They got a they got a bit of a wash to find digs. They got a they got a Keyshawn Booty. I mean, it you know, it's you know, four fifth round pick as their top two receivers and um uh a bit of a mess in the backfield with Ramando Stevenson and and um and Henderson coming out of Ohio State. Um and and then somehow they they make it all work. And I think that's that's the that's the coaching job of Mike Variable, who was actually in the building last year in Cleveland. Um so it's gonna be it's gonna be very tough to change the scheme and and and and Kevin's got a lot on his plate, but I I really do think if we can get to that third went this week, um, you know, get get get people healthy on the bye week and then um come out and and and and get this the rest of the season going.

SPEAKER_04:

What are what are your thoughts on the uh Cleveland Browns?

SPEAKER_01:

Well, isn't it just amazing about you know, last week we were talking about you know the Death Star is gonna show up and zapp, and then all of a sudden Joe Flacco comes out and throws for almost four Hundo, and um the Browns dominate with a 25-point victory, and now we're all starting to be like, you know what, I think we might be able to win this division, you know. And I mean, uh, you know, it's good. That's the good thing about football. I mean, you talk about something that Stefanski needed was this, and you can say the same about Zach Taylor. I mean, um, you know, the Bengals beat or upset the uh Steelers, and now all of a sudden they're calling for Mike Tomlin's head again. You know, I mean the guy was four and one going into or five and one going into the um game last week. So yeah, you know, I don't know. I I think Gabriel did enough, uh honestly, in a crappy weather day. Um, you know, 13 for 19. I think he had a buck 16 yards. Um, but to me, it's just the defense. I think Campbell um came out and really set the tone that second half with that pick six, and really to me, in my mind, broke their back that 24-6. Um, four sacks is just tough to overcome, especially the four turnovers that they had. Um, Judkins, um, you know, all these things I think really uh is exactly what the doctor ordered when you had what Flacco did on Thursday night, um, you know, out there looking like Joe Montana and um nine days removed from being in Cleveland, and you know, Tomlin called out the Browns GM, and um, you know, the local radio shows were just unrelentless. I mean, they were just relentless on that GM. So, you know, to me, this is just what the doctor ordered for Cleveland.

SPEAKER_04:

Will there be a chance that Shador Sanders plays this season, Jake?

SPEAKER_05:

Uh I can't say there's a zero chance. There's there's conflicting reports out there that's saying that they want to give him, you know, the last four games of the season or um, you know, at the minimum a week of practice with his game plan and his thing. But I mean Safanski came out today and said that he's not even taking first team reps um, you know, in practice during the week, and they're really they're really going in on all in on Dylan Gabriel. I know we had that short comment made by Huey here. Um he is six feet tall, and it is with shoes on, so I you know take that for what it is. Um you know, we've we've seen other small QBs kind of perform well in in the NFL. They look at uh look at Bryce Young really coming into himself. You know, he got injured last week, but he's really coming into his his final form. Kyler Murray, four time pro bowler. I know he's having trouble right now, but you know, those guys they could carve out a solid role for yourself as a small QB. And I think you know Kevin and Kevin and Andrew Berry wouldn't have taken him this high if they didn't. believe at least some somewhat of like a you know you know his floor maybe is a backup QB and then you know his ceiling as a you know middle of the road starter in the NFL and I think that's just gonna take you know weeks and um you know if if Shadur gets thrown in there, you know I'm I'm you know I I hope he does well. I'm not gonna I'm not gonna you know root against one or the other or you know be one of these crazy Shadur people calling into you know Cleveland radio saying like oh like you know we got to play him right away. It's it's it's silliness. I mean he's a fifth round pick. You know eventually if you want to see what you got with him you know throw him in there the last four weeks of the seasons if those if those weeks aren't you know crucial you know critical you know fighting for the playoffs you know that's that's totally fine to see what you have but um you know I think rolling with Dylan's probably going to be the where the way to go the rest of the year.

SPEAKER_01:

Well Huey if you're if you're uh Kevin Stefansky you uh do what Jake says put him on in there for four the last four games and what it if it is a situation where you get a chance at a wild card yeah I mean you know that that's something that I don't know I I I'm I do I did to uh also see what Jake saw about you know he's not even getting first team reps I mean none so to me you know as a as a former coach to me I'm like there's just no plans there is no plans you know I mean even if you were going to start in the last four games you're like all right let's get these last 10 snaps with you know the Shadur so um and if you remember on here weeks and weeks and weeks ago I think this is our eighth show Kenny is you know you'd be asking you asked me when uh Burrow was hurt you know who would you trade for and I was like Shadur You know I mean here was a guy at Colorado that ran for his life and made a living at it and did well and has a heck of an arm and you know to me as a defense I'd hate as a defensive coordinator I'd hate to prepare for somebody like Shadur. This guy can take off running running scared for his life and you know only that he's got a good arm back there. So you know I I don't know you know to me uh I'm just I'm happy we got Flacco I'm happy we got uh a new vigor down in Cincy and I'm happy for the Browns um that they um you know got the win and they look good and they're they're falling on their defense as their main one it looks like Miles Garrett now is somewhat happy so you know I don't know I just think uh a win you know when you win all is right with the world and you know the little things out there are are more palatable but um you know um we'll see they got a tough game coming up this week Jake player set miles garrett or Quinshaw Judkins in a big game this is a this is a nonsense question it's it's miles Garrett and it's and it's not even close.

SPEAKER_05:

When that man is on the field um you know where he is uh multiple head coaches including the Vikings um head coach um said that they've exclusively game planned around miles um and and what he brings to that defensive line um and you see it with the looks that they're getting from the offensive line where two guys literally have to go over there with a running back to even stop him and it's gonna you know let the let the right side of the line actually get to the QB which what you kind of saw um in the four sag game from our line last week so it's just he's such a game changer that um and I you know real realistically I I I think Quinshawn probably doesn't have three touchdowns without our defense um with where the field position was and I think a lot of that came from the defensive positioning um and I and so for that I I just got to say Miles he's a game wrecker you hear your thoughts um I you know I agree with Jake but I will throw this out there just being devil's advocate you know it's just like um you know when you run the when you run the ball in NFL it's much much easier on your defense on your offensive lineman um that falling back and that pass protection and oh by the way here comes some guy that's you know 285 pounds that runs like a cat you know trying to get around you um you know to me you know these guys would much rather just fire off the ball hit the guy in front of them uh you know do what do whatever they can and and I think Judkins is one that you know he doesn't get he doesn't get hit in the lot in the backfield like Chase Brown Cincinnati I think 80% of his runs they said the other night uh he's hit in the backfield you know uh Judkins has that I mean he's got that burst man when I I think it's the other way around I think he's probably only been touched 20% of the time in the backfield um but I just think uh offensive flows when you have that running game I'm not here to say yeah Miles Garrett I mean that's dude that guy is just unreal he's a freak you know but um I'm I'm saying part of the uh positiveness that I I think if they had Judkins that first game against Cincinnati they definitely would have won it wouldn't have come down to a field goal so um yeah it's just that's tough to replace you know a good running back I'm gonna probably lean toward Miles just because Jake even pretty much summed it all up there but let me just throw a hypothetical question it's it's early let's say the Bengals just go on a tear and win the division December rolls around Flacco's been lighting it up Joe Burrow's toe is better do you go to Burrow or do you ride with the guy that's that's uh leading you you know through the the season I mean you know just like Jake said something about you know uh Miles Garrett he's no it's a no-brainer to me it's a no-brainer here I mean you know I think um I think Joe Burroughs earned that right and it's his team and you know I think he's um he's the one that uh you just relish the fact that oh my god we got a great backup here you know if something stupid happens we can get him back in but you know I don't think we're gonna be in that situation uh whereas they're not gonna rush rush him back um you know if we're doing that good and and and you know doing really really well then you know they might hold him off a couple more weeks or whatever so um we'll see I'm you know we'll see I'm not sure all right well let's go with our upset picks and locks for me I got the uh I don't even think it's much of an upset but if you look at the uh the vetting boards I got cowboys over the Broncos and then uh that's my upset and for my lock Atlanta's gotta be just boat racing the Dolphins this weekend what do you got on yours? I yeah I I looked at that at land you know how guys I mean the Browns j or the Browns just humiliated I mean the Dolphins um you know and now the Dolphins are gonna be playing in a dome stadium and you know when you question somebody's manhood I mean they're gonna step up so I even thought about taking you know uh the Dolphins with points uh but then I scrolled down and my jaw about hit the floor when I saw the 49ers were getting a point and a half at Houston and I'm like are you serious right now and I had to double check it I had to go onto another site and that sure enough I mean so that's my lock and my upset special was Carolina plus seven and a half over Buffalo because I know you like Kenny I know you like Carolina at home and they play really well at home so you know seven and a half man that's pretty good and the Bears I mean getting six and a half over the Ratbirds or I'm sorry the Ravens um yeah you know that um that's enticing as well yeah I you gotta wonder if Lamar is actually gonna make it back but Jake what are what are your uh picks yeah I saw that last one too Hugh I think I saw Lamar's practice in today I think I don't know if he was limited or full but I think that's what that line represents so even even maybe a half half good Lamar might might do six and a half points who knows I mean you know who's to say um my upset um in and and just like Huey my my job I hit the floor when I saw this line um because it's you know it just in my in my very short time on earth um there's few fewer things that are guaranteed than the Steelers winning um at home um let alone giving them three and a half points versus the Packers um that's no disrespect towards the Packers I just I think Mike Tomlin's really good off of a loss um I think he's gonna adjust very well and it's Aaron Rodgers revenge game um he's he loves going up against his former teams and I think he's gonna play really well um so I you know I'm definitely taking that and then uh then my pick of the week um is is is really the Bucks you know minus four and a half at the Saints um I don't know how they got this inside of a touchdown. Um Baker Mayfield is well on his way to winning MVP this year. I know he had quite a setback last night but you know I think that's just the ebbs and flows of the NFL season and uh the Saints look a bit disjointed with Spencer Rattler um and um you know Chris Olave really handling the duties on offense and they can't get many points going so I think the I think the Buccaneers are going to put up you know 1520 in a big way.

SPEAKER_04:

Well to to finish up one last question here. We're all baseball guys too so who wins the World Series Toronto or the Dodgers? Huey you go first.

SPEAKER_01:

Uh to me it I called it earlier in the year again I'm like they're gonna repeat I mean they've just I mean they've bought a team down there and um that team is better than any other team out there. I mean I thought my Reds were good but I mean they were just lucky to keep it within three or four runs every game and um you know Shohe Atani I mean what was he three for three with three home runs and he pitched six innings had 10 K's uh are you serious right now so um I mean when it whenever you guys got you got guys like that Freddie Freeman and just uh unbelievable Mookie Betts and I you know I honestly I mean I would have to struggle to name you some people on Toronto's team besides uh uh what's it Vlad and um you know yeah and uh you know I'm just like uh that really you know sure I think he's on there now because his name was mentioned the other day and um I mean I it just struggles. I know they got that catcher that if you saw him out in public you're like no he's not a he's not a professional catcher you know and um you know who knows um but I just think the Dodgers just even though they don't have any bullpen um I mean I just think they're they're way up here I really do.

SPEAKER_05:

Well Jake you go with um the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Toronto Guardians I mean Toronto Blue Jays uh look uh you know I'm gonna take the team with the multi-billion dollar payroll um and um they they just they just got too much talent I mean just you know Mookie Betts Shoe Otani uh you know you can just you know Freddie Freeman you can just keep naming names and you can play the name game all day long with them and that's just the experienced team that's gonna win. Although I think that the Toronto Blue Jays do have a fun young core you know in Bo Bachet and in Vladdy Jr. I think both of those guys are you know they're gonna be future all-stars um and so if they can if they can find a way for that youth to kind of energize that team maybe they have a shot but it's hard to it's hard to compete with the dollar signs.

SPEAKER_04:

Well I I'm gonna say the Dodgers win it all but I'm gonna be rooting for the the Blue Jays as always uh thanks for listening to the SOB Scarlet Orange Brown podcast I'm Ken Carpenter I'm Chris Husman I'm Jay Carpenter thanks for listening to SOB SOB
