SCARLET ORANGE BROWN
It's Trick or Treat Time For The Buckeyes, Bengals, Browns
A 23-point lead erased. A white-knuckle rivalry on deck. And a defense so good it begs for any spark on offense. We’re diving into a packed Ohio football slate with clear eyes and strong takes, starting with why Ohio State can turn a tricky Penn State matchup into a statement. We break down how Ryan Day’s snap pacing keeps the Buckeyes fresh, why the young receiver trio of Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith, and Carnell Tate stress even top-five pass defenses, and what it will take to control the game script in Columbus. If you’re wondering where the edges are, it’s tempo, spacing, and making Penn State live in long fields.
Then we turn to Cincinnati, where the offense is good enough and the defense is not. Giving up 500 yards and 254 on the ground to the Jets exposes missed tackles, shaky run fits, and a pass rush that needs juice. We talk players-only meetings, how to turn urgency into better fourth quarters, and why this week is a true must-win for both standings and identity. With Joe Flacco dealing, the formula is simple: sustain drives late, eliminate explosives, and let the receivers dictate matchups.
Cleveland’s story is the mirror image: a dominant defense featuring Myles Garrett and an offense searching for rhythm. We weigh the case for a quarterback shake-up, the power of off-script playmaking, and how a bye week can reset sequencing, play-action, and protection rules. Get our upset picks, locks, and score calls, plus a look at the broader Big Ten picture—from Indiana’s rise under Curt Cignetti to Michigan’s steady climb—so you can see where November is headed for the Buckeye State.
If you’re into sharp analysis with a local edge, hit follow, share with a friend who lives for Ohio football, and drop your predictions in the comments. Your take: which Ohio team fixes it first?

Because here it's all football, all Ohio, all the time. Here's your hosts coming to you live from the Dublin bubble, Chris Husman and Ken Carpenter.
SPEAKER_02:Hello and welcome to the S will be Scarlet, Orange, and Brown podcast. I'm one of your hosts, Ken Carpenter.
SPEAKER_04:And I'm Chris Husman.
SPEAKER_02:Chris, this week we have the Buckeyes coming off an off week going up against the James Franklin Les Penn State Knitney Lions. Cincinnati Bengals coming off a tough 39-38 loss to the uh New York Jets. And the Browns lost 32-12 to the Patriots, and they are in an off week. Before we get started with all of that, let's it's Halloween, so let's focus on something more important. What are your top three candies for Halloween?
SPEAKER_04:No question. No question, it's Snickers bars. Snicker bars uh is my number one overall. I mean, it's got everything you need in it. Everything you need. And if you want to go light, you go with the Milky Way. Alright. Milky Way just has nougat in it. Or you get and it has caramel. And then if you want to go real light, you go with the three Musketeers. Alright, that's just got the nougat in it. So it's just whether I want to go heavy, medium, or light that day. Most of the time I'm going heavy with Snickers. Right? But you can't beat Milky Way and you can't beat a three Musketeers. So what about you?
SPEAKER_02:I am a uh big Reestick guy. I I can't go past a gas station without getting one. So uh I like Reeseck, I like the uh the Milky Way, and just about anything that's got caramel and chocolate, I'm good to go. So yeah, fair enough. What would be the one that you're like I I cannot have that type of candy?
SPEAKER_04:I don't know. I haven't seen these in a while, but uh um Clark bars, um Zagnuts, um Malo Cups, something with marshmallow in them, um candy corn. Um yeah, those are some that I'm just like when I see those, I'm like, ooh.
SPEAKER_02:You know if there's one for me, it would be the uh you know, the old-fashioned uh candy cigarettes. Uh those things were rat nasty. I mean just nasty.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, and you couldn't even you couldn't even light them. I was trying to light them and smoke red.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah. Oh my god. Well, hey, let's get let's get on with the buckeyes here. And that's what the the listeners check in for. They they've got Penn State 20.5, 20 and a half spread, which I'm uh a little skeptic skeptical about, but Penn State, the last time they've beaten the Buckeyes was 2016. And they're coming into this game at Ohio State without James Franklin as the head coach, and without Drew Aller, the quarterback, and I believe their their quarterback that they got taken over is an old and tangy kid. So uh I would imagine that Matt Patricia is gonna have a lot of fun yeah trying to uh mix things up for him. But Penn State, they there was a reason they were ranked in the top five at the beginning of the season. They got players. So I I'm not so sure. What do you think?
SPEAKER_04:Kenny, I mean, I know people, you know, I uh here's the thing this game is not gonna be close, it's gonna be a blowout. Um, there's some bad blood between Ryan Day and and uh Jim Knowles. I keep calling him Jim Bowman, but it's Jim Knowles. And you know, I mean Jim Knowles, let's face it, he left three-year, almost a$10 million uh deal with Penn State to go over there and you know try to rate that ship. Um, you know, since then, you know, they fired their head coach. Um, the number one quarterback in the uh Heisman voting, Drew Allard is not you know an afterthought right now. Um, you know, I'm looking at the standings. There's only three, there's four teams that have not won a game in the Big Ten, and that is Penn State 0-4 and Michigan State, Purdue, and Wisconsin 0-5. And uh, you know, I mean, you get a uh a seventh-ranked Minnesota team in there, and we just crushed them, and their coach couldn't, you know, he couldn't believe all the weapons that we had. I think we talked about that that one week, um, you know, as well. Um, there's just some teams uh that I think we've already played that are just way better, you know, as far as talent is. And um, let's face it, I mean, Northwestern handled Penn State. Um, you know, UCLA in their first uh first game of the new offensive coordinator and coaching staff handled Penn State. Um, you know, it's just one of those things where I just think this game is not going to be close. Even when Penn State is stacked, um, you know, they come into Ohio Stadium and, you know, we end up pulling away by you know one, two touchdowns, maybe 17 points or something. Um, but it's just not that way. I honestly, Kenny, I just don't think the talent is there for Penn State this year.
SPEAKER_02:Well, they their top offensive weapons are their two running backs, uh Catron Allen and Devontae Ross, uh, you know, 612 yards for Catron and 255 for Ross, and they they they've got one uh one receiver with six touchdowns, and that's Singleton, but he's only got like 250 yards receiving.
SPEAKER_04:So um well, and a lot of those too, Kenny, were when they played those first three games, and they played, I don't even think they played up yes, schools, you know, and um they they padded those stats then, but that that is a good point you're making.
SPEAKER_02:Well, the one thing that they they got going for them, I believe they got the number five pass defense in the country, and I think that's gonna be good for the Buckeyes to test, you know, Julian Say and uh Jeremiah Smith and uh Carnell Tate, who are just lighting it up. So it'll be a fun game to for you know for them to play. And I I think I saw something today where they're saying they want it to be a a blackout or something like that to compete against the whiteout that they have up at Penn State, but I just don't think there's enough Buckeye fans out there that have black buckeye shirts to wear. So it doesn't matter. They'll be having fun though.
SPEAKER_04:I I think it is gonna be a blackout, I think it's gonna be a knockout, in my opinion. And, you know, I mean, I just don't I just don't see um Penn State coming in here and giving um you know a high state with all the weapons that we have and the and the defense that we have. Um I just don't see it being a game. Now, you know, whether that comes to fruition or not, who knows? You know, but I I wanted to do something uh too as well. I'm gonna go over since it was a bye week last week, and that's the other thing I like in Ohio State's favorite, you know, we have a lot of you know, maybe some new wrinkles that we put in over the bye week, but um, I wanted to look at you know who exactly is and what place in the Big Ten, and and you know, and just see where they are and where they fall. And you know, I started doing some homework on Indiana, and um, you know, that Indiana's a scary team. I mean, the rise that they had, and I know you got the Kirk Signati factor, you know, and the new contract, and you know, he came from James Madison and that stance he has on the sideline, and it's all cool, but I think it's just awesome for the Big Ten. I really do. Um, they got a very good quarterback in Fernando Mendoza, their defense is their strength. Um, you know, they've had two double-digit wins against at the time, two top ten teams. Um, and you know, to me, the opposite of that, Kenny, is Penn State. I mean, Penn State was expected to be Indiana this year. And it was just, you know, those high expectations are not there. You know, Oregon is is is stable. Um, I guess you could put it, it's a good word. Uh USC is inconsistent, too inconsistent for me. Uh UCLA, you got mixed results in there. I mean, you never know what's gonna happen from week to week. Um Washington's just volatile. I mean, they could look poor one game and then beat Illinois very bad, you know, at home. So, you know, they're um you don't know what you're gonna get with Washington. You know, the X factor in this whole thing, Kenny, and I hate to say it, is that team up north. And uh that's Michigan. I mean, Michigan's sitting at six and two right now. Um the Underwood kid, in my opinion, I hate to say it, but the Underwood kid is legit. Um, he is a very good quarterback and he's young. Um I don't think he has the arm strength just yet, like Julian's saying, um, and the decision making just yet, but as far as an athlete and uh just how he handles his players and how he handles that offensive line, um, it's pretty impressive, uh, to be honest with you. Um we're gonna have our work cut out for us again at Michigan this year. Um, Iowa, Minnesota, just middle of the road. You know, if you look at the Big Ten standings right now, Indiana's one with uh they're at 8-0, and that's the only reason they're number one, uh, or five and oh, excuse me, that's the only reason they're number one, but you know, and then you got Ohio State, which comes in second at four and oh. Um, and then there's a tie, three-way tie for third, uh, which you got Oregon, Michigan, and Iowa all sitting at four-and-one as well. Um, and then there is USC at three and one. So after that, it goes off pretty quick. You know, I'm not counting all these three uh two team losses in here just yet. Um, but you know, for those top six teams uh right there, I mean, I think, you know, um Indiana and Michigan are uh the class of that other than Ohio State. I don't know what your thoughts are on it.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I I totally agree with you. You know, and what Signetti did is, you know, I'm wondering if that is the the route that these schools that have openings, if they should just take that model that Indiana did, is Signetti just took his best players he had at JMU and brought him with him. So he's not teaching a whole new system to to everybody. He's got he's got some of his best players at JMU and they're all still there on the team. And I think that's something that uh every opening out there of the Florida, the Penn State, all these openings that are popping up, LSU maybe they go that route when they're looking for a coach, you know, instead of just getting like what LSU did, they went out and got Brian Kelly, and you know, they made that mistake. I I think that uh you know Michigan they're gonna be tough. The the one thing I I don't like about Michigan is the um the quarterback, he he he is nowhere near as accurate as Julian saying because you know he's a freshman, I understand that. Uh but they they they've got a solid defense. Uh they handled Washington like 24 to 7. Um you know, the Michigan State game, that's a rival game for him. So, you know, anything could possibly happen there. But but going forward, it looks like everything should stay on track, and it could end up being Indiana and Michigan and the Big Ten championship game. And being in Indianapolis, that place is gonna be a sea of red, possibly. So that'll be a fun one to watch. Let me ask you this. Throw on your uh athletic director hat here, and who do you hire at Penn State, who do you hire at Florida, and who do you hire at LSU?
SPEAKER_04:Well, um the thing I'd like to do is I I go to um I go to the best teams out there and see what their strong suits are, and I try after that coordinator. Or I try after, you know, somebody that recruits an area that I really want to be in. Um I've even heard Penn State trying to pluck Brian Hartline, yes, um, you know, out of Ohio State and offer him big bucks. Um, you know, it's just like they did, it's just like UC did uh Luke Fickle and then Wisconsin took Luke Fickle from UC. Um, you know, a lot of people have come out of Ohio State. If you just look at these um coaches that are around here, and you know, you'd look at the you know, 1997 coaching staff, you know, picture of Alabama, I mean, it's full of like six, seven, eight head coaches that are like, you know, name droppers, you know? Yep. And I think that's I think that's what I would do. I would look at big programs out there that have a really good young um coordinator that can identify with the kids, uh, that can rally a fan base in the city around gaining NIL money. Um, and you know, just look for, you know, that can recruit an area well. Um you know, Ryan Day's not afraid to go into Texas. He's not afraid to go into California, Arizona, uh, Florida, uh, South Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey, uh, anywhere to get an athlete. And I think that's the kind of guy that I would want at a Penn State, um, or even um, you know, at an LSU. Um, so you know, who that guy is, I'm not sure. I mean, I would probably look at um, you know, some of these up-and-coming programs, you know, that are out there. Um, you know, a Texas state, um, man, these guys are like seven and one. Um, I would look at, you know, programs like that, and what's making these guys um, you know, so good right now, you know. And um, you know, maybe some of the smaller schools you take a look at, but then I'd also look at who the coordinators are for some of these bigger schools.
SPEAKER_02:Well, perfect example you talked about there was I mean, you look at Saban's staff when he had Kirby Smart. He goes over, hops over to Georgia, old Miss Lane Kiffin. He was on the staff there with uh Saban. So yeah, I mean that's probably the ideal way to do it. Well, let's move next to the Cincinnati Bengals. Gotta suffer a hot heartbreaking loss to the New York Jets 39 to 38. And the thing that jumps out in my mind is there's some injuries going into this week's game. Flacco has an AC joint. Hendrickson and uh Logan Wilson are both injured. I I don't know their status going into this week, but it it's it's Thursday, so they still got a couple days. But uh the uh the loss to uh the Jets is to me is a perfect example of that's the NFL for you. Any week you you you can't just guarantee wins in the NFL and you know things go right for a team and sometimes it works in the favor of a bad Jets.
SPEAKER_04:100%. And yeah, 39-38, I mean, I I would have got I would have rather got beat 39 to 10. You know, and um to have a 23-point lead in the fourth uh in the fourth, that's unacceptable. And it's unacceptable. I mean, you're gonna get the ball, you know, in between those possessions unless they onside kick, which they didn't, and you know, you gotta at least waste, you know, two, three, four minutes on each possession, maybe mix in a first down. Just saying. And um, you know, I think the offense is good with Flacco, and Flacco did practice today, and I guess he was throwing dimes. So um that part I'm happy about. Um, you know, uh the O-line has been good. You can check that. Okay. Uh the running backs have been good the past two weeks. Check that. So what's the problem? You know, the wide receivers are elite, uh, the tight ends are good. Check that. What's the problem? It's a defense. Uh, and then you mix in uh you know Owesivatch or whatever how you pronounce his name, you know, the the Harvard guy. Um uh he had his fifth crucial drop in three games. On that drive, we were going down to kick a field goal to win it. You know, we're at our own 45-yard line, and you know, he drops another open pass. And anytime you give up 500 yards to the Jets, anybody, I mean, just you know, the 0-7 Jets, especially, um, where they have every reason just to be uh I'm gonna roll over and die here, and they did, and you got to give him credit. I mean, our linebackers are horrible. You know, Logan Wilson's not hurt. I mean, he's just, you know, his pride's hurt. You know, Trey Hendrickson got cheap shotted there, and I know his hips hurt, but you know, he should be back. I mean, that's nature, that's halfway through the year of the NFL. Everybody's hurt, right? Uh Shamar Stewart has one tackle this year. One. That's our number one draft pick. Um, you know, they had a players-only meeting. Um, they got to address the poor tackling. They're leading the NFL with 81 missed tackles. That's unacceptable. Um the fourth quarter collapses, unacceptable. Um, zero pass rush from our ends and from our defensive tackles. They can't stop the run. Uh, the Jets had 254 yards rushing. Uh, four of those were over 25 yards. Um, the roster construction uh is to me is so questionable because Dick Tobin, you know, put this together, and I'm like, what are you doing? I mean, you let guys like DJ Reeder get away. You guys, you guys, you let guys like Jesse Pates get away. Um, it just makes this Chicago win a must win right now. And if you look, Pittsburgh got beat, they didn't look good again. Um, we should be, you know, five and four, uh, half game out of the uh of the league and getting ready to play a Chicago team, going in, you know, clicking off iron right now, and we're not. The Chicago game has to be a must-win.
SPEAKER_02:Yes, the Bears are four and three, and it just you just don't know how they're going to be. And you know, the the positive for Cincinnati is it's a home game. So hopefully, you know, having that home crowd is gonna help them out a little bit. But the Flacco is the one thing I like about what Flacco's doing, he's like, all right, the best guy I got on this team I throw it through in all the time. And it, you know, it's that's the you you've got to almost double team the guy every every time, every down. And then of course that opens it up for T Higgins. So I mean, they they've got they got the right thing going for them, but and it's gonna come down to the last game of the season who ends up winning this division. Because it's it's gonna be one of those uh you know 10 and 7 records or something like that, nine and eight. And that that's how it's gonna end up, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_04:And I know one team's out is the Browns, so yeah, and and unfortunately, Kenny, I think you can refer back to this game, the Jets game, and that'll be the difference. I mean, if we would have won that game like we should have won, you know, being up 23 and a fourth, and that or giving up 23 uh in a fourth, I mean I I think it's gonna be the difference, and that's sad. Yes.
SPEAKER_02:You know, speaking of sad, Cluman Browns uh get a bye week this week, and hopefully they uh they don't lose that one. But uh I mean it's uh they got the the top defense of the NFL and the complete opposite on the other side of the ball. And um they they get they get a bye week and you know they they played the Patriots last week, never really in the game. They lose 32 to 12. The highlight is you know, Miles Garrett with five sacks. That's that's the highlight for him. And you know, like I said before, you know, Miles is uh you gotta wonder if he's gonna go through his career and just be like, wow, what if I was on a different team? You know, because it's it it's so frustrating, and probably the the one guy you don't want to be in Cleveland this week or any week is Dylan Gabriel, you know, aside from being Kevin Stefansky and Andrew Barry, because those guys cannot go out in public because I I guarantee they're getting destroyed by anybody that's a potential Cleveland fan.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. No, I I yeah, to me, I think you're you're dead on, Kenny, 100%. You know, the offense to me is just too inconsistent. Um, there's no rhythm, in my opinion. Um there's zero play calling. Uh it's a mystery to me at times, the the plays that are being called. Um, not sure what Stefanski's doing there. The quarterback situation is still unresolved, and you have to step up and resolve this. I mean, if the people want Shador stay, what not a better time? I mean, with their record right now, just be like, okay, you know what? Here he is. You know, we'll let you take a look at him. And um, you know, I uh at this point in time, I'm like, what do you have to lose? I mean, you traded Flacco away to an end state end division rival. So you did have, you know, the fortitude, let's just say, to do that. You know, why can't you do the same with your you know, two draftable quarterbacks and just see what they had? I mean, um, Gabriel's not bad. You know, is he going to be a difference maker in the um Super Bowl quest for the Browns? I'm not sure about that. Um, you know, I'd just like to see, hey, you know, does Sanders has it? Does Gabriel does Gabriel have it? If not, then you know, we need to draft a quarterback coming out. And uh, like you said, the defense is elite, Miles Garrett with five sacks against New England. Um, I think they got a lot of questions and a lot of things that they could be doing this bye week uh in order to get ready.
SPEAKER_02:Well, you know, I I don't understand what's going on with Stefansky and his approach towards Shadur. So I, you know, I'm not at practice, so I can't understand that. But I do know that owners, their number one priority uh owning an NFL team is butts in the seat. And if you continue to run Dylan Gabriel out there, there's gonna be less and less fans. And I guarantee you announce that Shadur Sanders is starting, they're they're gonna have people showing up in droves. 100%. You know, so at some point you gotta give the guy a shot, and um, I'm not sure he's the answer. I I really don't know. Um but it it's gotta be different than what's going on right now because they're the offense is not doing anything. Uh, you know, the only thing they got is the running game a little bit with Quinshawn, but other than that, there's just nothing there.
SPEAKER_04:And you know, I I mean their their tight ends are solid, that Fannon and Nojoku, yeah, they're solid. You know, the O-line is questionable at times, but they got a good nucleus. Um yeah, it just makes you wonder. I mean, you know, if if uh you know Flacco can't get it done in a place like that, too. I mean, you gotta start looking, you know, it all starts at the top. Yeah. If somebody's gonna come in and break that mold and whatnot, a better guy than Sanders.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, you know, if they you know, but he it's the NFL. You know, he he's he's gonna struggle, but at least, you know, you run him out there, then the problem you do is if you replace Gabriel and Sanders doesn't do anything, then what do you do?
SPEAKER_04:Well, that's the thing, you know, I just watching Colorado play when he when he was a quarterback, I'm like, this there's a there's a chance that this guy might not make it out of his college career career alive. I mean, he was running for his life, and he was still throwing 60-yard dimes and you know, somehow scrambling for 12, 17 yards. And um, I mean, that's the exciting part that I think that Cleveland hasn't had there in a while. That, you know, all right, I might not know all you we can't use all the plays in the playbook, but if I drop back and don't see my first guy open on the passing tree, then I'm gonna tuck it and scramble. And now you're asking for linebackers to chase somebody like Sadura Standards around, and you know, we know who's gonna win that that that race. So, you know, to me, it's like, why not? What do you got to lose?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, that's about all they can do. Let's get your upsetting lock for the week.
SPEAKER_04:Um, you know, I haven't really looked real closely at this. Um, I I am going, you know, with the for sure thing uh on this. I'm taking the Bengals uh because it's a must-win. You know, after a player only, you know, it's just like the uh we called the Miami game, uh playing uh the Falcons, and you were like, you know, I can't see the Falcons losing to Miami. I mean, you know, Cleveland just blew them out, and here they go, and they, you know, blow out uh Atlanta. So um, you know, to me, it's like when you question somebody's fortitude, um, you know, they're gonna step up. And it might be just for a week. Um, but I think with that players-only meeting and the everybody just you know ragging on everybody with the Cincinnati defense and knowing that you lost the game basically for the team, um I think the Bengals are gonna step up and I I would take a money line on this on this uh on this week.
SPEAKER_02:Well I I looked at it and I saw that the Broncos are getting one and a half against the Texans, and I I like uh Bo Nicks and I like what the Broncos are doing, so I'm gonna take them. And then uh the Jaguars are minus two and a half versus the Raiders. No. And the Raiders are brutal, so I think you gotta go with the Jaguars there.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah. And that's the other thing too, is you know, I was looking at um Atlanta and New England um on here. Um, with New England being a five and a half point um favorite. Uh so in other words, they're gonna be giving five and a half to Atlanta on the road. Um I like New England. I like what um Vrabel's doing uh there and you know a bunch of no-name guys are getting it done. And um, you know, they're six and two. So I like that. Um I'm gonna take um New England minus five and a half as well um on that one too. So um my underdog um I don't sleep on Pittsburgh this week. I know they play Indianapolis and you know, uh, but the thing is it's at Pittsburgh and you know there's some people there that are really, really, really upset with things going on. So, you know, I would I would I would put my money on Pittsburgh as we do as the upset.
SPEAKER_02:Alright, and going back to the Buckeyes versus Penn State, give me a score on that one.
SPEAKER_04:Um I'm gonna go um with Ryan Day putting a couple in on purpose. Um I'm gonna go Ohio State 46 and uh Penn State um 13. 4613. 4613.
SPEAKER_02:Okay, I'm gonna go with uh the black guys obviously winning, and I'm gonna say 4210 over the nitty lines. And then uh just keep keep the boat uh downstream and and getting uh picking up W. You know, the ones the one thing that I read today is that Brian Day, you know, everybody's thinking, well you got all these weapons, but the one thing that he's done this year is he's taking fewer snaps than anybody else in the Big Ten. He's like a game less than uh I want to say Penn State. Or no, no, I'm sorry, Indiana. Like the players have played one game less, basically. So basically, he's pacing them, so you know, he's almost working in another bye week when it comes down the stretch, when it comes down to the playoffs, and hopefully that'll be a payoff for the Buckeyes.
SPEAKER_04:Well, I mean, you know, he's no joke. I mean, he was a James Madison, and he certainly knows how to navigate through that whole process. I mean, you talk about a eight, ten, sixteen team playoff, whatever they had in one double A. I mean, um Yeah, it's a long season. I mean, I remember you know, I can remember in uh January watching the you know, the Division III, what is it, the Amos Alonso Stag Bowl, you know, and Mount Union would be in it all the time.
