Time Lords! Our Series 2 Tardis adventures begin on New Earth in the year 5,000,000,023 and we've kidnapped our favorite witchy Time Lord Shannon Cay and our favorite composer Time Lord Morgan for this Freaky Friday moment.
The Doctor and Rose visit New Earth, 23 years after the events of "The End of the World" to answer a mysterious call on the psychic paper. Once they arrive to the hospital, they encounter the Sisters of Plentitude, an order of cat nuns who can seemingly cure any disease thousands of years before the vaccines are set to be developed. They also encounter an old foe deep in the basement and she's ready to get her revenge.
It's girls night as our Tardis team break down the Catkind crimes and the return of our favorite toxic trampoline, Lady Cassandra. The gang praises David Tennant's first proper outing as the Doctor and Billie Piper's comedic talents with how she's able to flip from high comedy to heartbreaking drama within the same sentence. Paige and Shannon relate the diseased-clones to the HIV crisis of the 1980s and how touch and human connection is so important. Plus, some incredible listener questions and the gals question which villains they'd like to body swap with.

SPEAKER_01Yeah, no. I I need it at like Earth's core temperature. Um, so I understand. Couldn't be me.
SPEAKER_02We hope you like the heated jet tub, though. We really hope you luxuriate in that there's all the essential oils, their sensitive skin.

SPEAKER_02You are you need Nobby Bar. Shannon, welcome to the TARDIS. We've baby proofed it for your kid. I mean, they might float around, they might see too many adventures, but don't worry, they're safe.
SPEAKER_03Well, are you guys ready for this? I prepared, I prepared, I am this episode, the cat's meow of a time ward. Yo! That's so good. Uh so I'm glad, I'm glad that we have all the safety precautions in place. Uh, safety first, then teamwork, guys. In that order. In that order.
SPEAKER_02But y'all, this is such a funny episode. I love a good body swap moment. So quick icebreaker question. Which villain would you like to switch bodies with in this show? It could be any of the villains. Shannon, I did think I bet Shannon would make a great Slatheen. Like just one of those little aliens bebopping around, like maybe a few toots here and there. So while I do love a good fart, you know me.
SPEAKER_03Um, who doesn't? I I um I really thought about this and I love the dream lord. You do love chaos and a little bit of evil. You know, I I I have some kind of like, I I guess yes, he is evil, but he definitely has like these really fun, like redemption like arcs like throughout where you think he might do something good and then he doesn't. But he makes you think so much along the way. Um, and so if I could switch bodies with someone, I think that that's the kind of chaos I'd like to choose.
SPEAKER_02And here's the thing the dream lord is for the sad girls, the depressed bitches, who are us. It's our favorite genre of music. So I get it.
SPEAKER_04My first thought is, I mean, our icon of the episode, Lady Cassandra, which most people would not want to be in her situation. However, I have a lot of chronic pain and chronic illnesses. So there are a lot of times when I'm like, I don't want a body, I don't want to exist in a body sometimes. I just want to be like a face. So her life is kind of ideal for me. I mean, that is true, and you could boss people around and just be like, moisturize me, bring me stuff, and listen to Britney Spears all day. Listen to Britney all day. That sounds great.
SPEAKER_03Also, I think she got caressed all day because that means human touch was like a big theme of this episode.
SPEAKER_04It wasn't broken, yeah. So, I mean, yeah, she's just living her life. She's a diva.
SPEAKER_02She is. Morgan, is there a villain you would like to body swap with? And you can say me, I am a villain of real life.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I don't know, a villain, maybe a bit of a complicated, thorny character in all of our lives, but um, aren't we all though? Uh, as you know, my Doctor Who knowledge is limited. Um, so I learned a lot watching this episode. And so I would like to choose another villain that we kind of see in this episode, which is Matron Casp. Um, mainly because I'm curious to see if my cat allergy will come with me when we swap bodies. And I want to do that for science. But would they have a cure for that? Would they have a cure for it?
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh. Who's to say? Who's to say?
SPEAKER_04Allergic to yourself?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03It seemed like those nuns were living like a real nice life. Cushy. For you know, it seemed like they were living.
SPEAKER_02They were one of those nonprofits with money where nonprofits, yeah. Yeah, we'd be like really questioning some things. There's like not even a gift shop there, probably hidden away if we're being real. Okay, obviously, I would love to be a pating, always. That is my goal, to be a tiny chaos demon who like, give me a little grenade and I'm happy. But I think I would really thrive. I'm just looking at my list of creatures. I want to be a zygon. I want to be able to trick people into thinking I'm whoever I can be, just morph into whoever. I want to have fun. And honestly, as a zygon, I would be able to just like turn into anybody and just take over the situation. So imagine me just taking over any political situation and like I could do some good in this universe, y'all. I really could.
SPEAKER_04I could also do some real evil if you wanted to.
SPEAKER_01I mean that's why we love Chelsea because what is she gonna do? The good or the evil? May depend on the day.
SPEAKER_02May depend on the perspective. Because is it evil to get rid of really bad people in power right now? Who's to say? Who's to say?
SPEAKER_01I mean, we're also recording this on the eve of a Republican senator probably dying because you know, we had to wait for a certain deadline. You could have done that sooner, Charles.
SPEAKER_02I really could have. You know what? I really tried. The rule of threes actually just hit somewhere else. A different Republican. Somewhere else. Morgan is making I'm I'm glad I can make you laugh with my morbid humor. Shannon, I'll catch you up.

SPEAKER_04All right. I I also thought of another good point if you were at Katna and Morgan. You would have so much access to cat to um catnip. It would be so easy to get. Oh wow.
SPEAKER_02I've never seen Morgan under the influence of anything because, like me, we like don't drink anymore or do anything. We're very boring now. But that's something I would like to see. Morgan having a good time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I do grow my own catnip. It is not that hard to grow, guys. It is really, it is a weed. You just throw that in the ground, it grows. So I you're a farmer. All of you could do it. Yeah, that makes me a farmer, definitely.

SPEAKER_02It really is. But no, let's dive into this episode. I have so much to cover. This is series two, episode one, New Earth, written by Russell T. Davies, directed by James Hawes. This originally aired on the 15th of April 2006. And this features the 10th Doctor, Rose Tyler, The Face of Bo, Matron Caps, Sister Jat, Novice Haim, Chip, and our favorite toxic trampoline, Lady Cassandra. And the setting is New New Earth in the year 5023, 23 years after the event of The End of the World, an episode we covered with Morgan. And that's why we had to have her back. So I'm gonna go through some of these synopses because they are so fun. The TARDIS Wiki one versus the serialized. Let's see who did it better. TARDIS in the distance future. An order of cat nuns cure all illnesses, but the tenth doctor is suspicious of their methods. Uncovering the truth leads them to the basement where Rose becomes captured by Lady Cassandra and her body overtaken. The doctor must uncover the truth of the hospital, save Rose, and foil Cassandra's plans. I feel like this one really paints our girl Cassandra as the villain, and I would say maybe she's the hero. It does. We need to think about that a little more. Come on, TARDIS. Serialize, though. In the year 5,023, after the destruction of the Earth, the Doctor takes Rose to the new Earth. There, in a hospital facility, the feline sisters of plentitude can mysteriously cure any diseases, but in the basement, an old enemy of the doctor is out for revenge. Hmm. A little more fun, a little more mysterious. And then before we dive into this episode, it does briefly feature horrible man Noel Clark. And so any discussion of him throughout this whole series is just about the characters and every other horrible man that's ever appeared. SPEAKER_02Yep. And so, our companions, Paige. What are you what are your impressions of this very silly Billy episode? And do you remember the first time you we watched this, Paige? I'm like trying to go back in the faded memories of my old age.
SPEAKER_04It was honestly so long ago that I watched this for the first time because I was probably 13 when I watched it.
SPEAKER_02Why are you bragging about being younger than me?
SPEAKER_04I always am. I live for that. I am younger than you, and that's a fact. And I'm gonna bring it up. Um yeah, I watched this for the first time. I think this was one of my first episodes of the show I watched, which I also realized about the school reunion episode. That was also one of my introductions to the show. Because they were rerunning season two a lot on BBC America. And so I the first season I watched live was Donna's season, but I went back and watched a lot of this.
SPEAKER_02Companions, talk to us about the first time you watch it, because I imagine it was very, very, very, very, very recently.
SPEAKER_03So upon my like first watch, I just um I I every time I like re-watch Doctor Who, I'm just like really brought in by the mix of practical effects and post effects. Um and like every sing I it is cheesy, but golly, I just there's something that every time I watch it, it makes me so excited to like be on a set somewhere, like doing a thing, like going somewhere. And through all of these like different scenes that you saw, like you got to go to all these like different places and have all these different layers. Um, and that's something that always just really brings me in to any Doctor Who episode. That and cats.
SPEAKER_02And cats, yes, but uh, I I don't like it when the cats are evil. Here's the thing: are they evil? Are they very smart with some misguided morals? Morgan, tell us your adventure watching this episode because you knew all about Lady Cassandra, but you did not know about these very realistic cat costumes, which I feel like Shannon needs to be cat-kind for Halloween at this point.
SPEAKER_01I mean, not a bad Halloween costume as someone who loves to go as the most obscure thing. I it's up there for me now. Um, yeah, I did watch this 22 hours ago. So it is fresh in my mind. I because I knew that this was a Lady Cassandra episode, I was expecting more Brittany. It's okay. We can't blow our budget on toxic every single time she appears.
SPEAKER_02I because we filmed this so out of order, um, we find out in our school reunion episode from our British companion correspondent Hamish Steele that because the Doctor Who is on the BBC, they have access to the BBC music library. So they got Britney for like nothing. But when they come to the US and when they had their Disney Plus deal, it's like no budget. It's the Dawson's Creek of it all where they have to change music. Crazy.
SPEAKER_01Tragic, tragic. But also music licensing is a whole headache on its own. Um, so I knew my girl was gonna be in it. I really loved Billy Piper in this. Um, I know that there's a great point that you have in the notes about kind of her experience with this episode and wanting to do something more comedic. And as always, I think right now, when you have um the nice goblin from Labyrinth growing into a man with a brain worm running our health system in the United States. Um, it the topic felt really timely in addition to that. So, you know, 20 years ago to make everyone feel old. Um, I don't know how much has changed.
SPEAKER_02I mean, what all has changed, really? We've learned that through Doctor Who, especially Shannon's episodes with the Slovene. Not much has changed, y'all. But let's get into this plot because it's so much fun. I like that the cold open is so short. We get a relatively brief scene of Rose saying goodbye to her mother and Mickey as the doctor fires at the TARDIS. Rose exchanges I love you with Jackie, and Mickey tells her he loves her, but she just responds with a hug and a goodbye. She then runs into the TARDIS and asks the doctor where they're going, and he says, further than they've gone before, before they smash to credits. Now, the reason why this this cold open and has a reason for being so disconnected and short, it's because they were not sure which episode in the first few episodes was gonna be episode one, because this one had so many production delays. And then they originally thought The Girl in the Fireplace, which is episode four, they were like, Well, that was gonna be episode two, but it's actually kind of a weird episode, and we can't have it as episode one. And then they were like, Tooth and claw is a very weird episode. It ended up getting a mixed response. That can't be the premiere, so let's make that episode two, and then episode three, it's like, nope, doesn't fit the timeline.
SPEAKER_04So it's so weird to not know the order of how your show's gonna go.
SPEAKER_02Just imagine it's a puzzle piece of like what's done first, does it kind of make enough sense? Ooh, this one's not very good. Let's just like scramble this together. Luckily, they cobbled this, they truly cobbled this episode together somehow.
SPEAKER_03Man, so that's so crazy because I feel like the the the face of Bo, I feel like that's like such a thread that I assumed would go all through the season, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02It goes into season three. Yeah. And maybe beyond it's complicated. It is complicated.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, that's just that's incr actually it kind of to me, that's like incredible writing, right?
SPEAKER_02Like how I can't even imagine like writing a piece like that had all these like different chunks, not knowing what order that doesn't and I will say in season three, which might be my favorite of the Russell seasons, the eras, that arc is so satisfying that like some of the sillier stuff that happens in series two, I'm just like, yeah, that's fine. But I will I will say the doctor was not wrong, they are going further than they've ever gone before by a whole 23 years because they land on new new earth in the year 5 billion and 23 million, and Rose and the Doctor are all cutesy and flirting, they smell in the applegrass, they're laying on the ground on the doctor's jacket that they're using as like a picnic blanket, and they're just reminiscing about their first date, watching the earth burn. Romantic. Sure. Humans are weird, y'all. It's like very weird burn.
SPEAKER_04This is a good opening for what we kind of refer to as the rom-com season of Doctor Who.
SPEAKER_02Yes, they've got a younger doctor, a more like traditional, handsome doctor, so they're really leaning into it. And also wrote, like, Billy Piper has Chemistry with Everyone, so it really works out for us, the viewers. But the doctor explains that humans got nostalgic for Earth after, like, burned, and they found a similar place with similar air and gravity as Earth, and you know what? Here they are. But then the doctor reveals it's not just a fun trip, but the doctor received a message on his psychic paper to be like, come to me, visit me in the hospital ward 26. But little do they know they're being spied on by chip and a familiar voice via some familiar metal spiders, which love those metal spiders, need a few in my life. They clock Rose as a real human, and we learn that our favorite toxic trampoline, Lady Cassandra, is still alive. She fully Emma Roberts. Surprise, bitch, bet you saw the last of me. We follow the doctor and Rose to the hospital run by the Sisters of Plentitude, which are delightful cat-kind nuns, like truly just cat nuns, and I love them so much. Every time people ask me some of my favorite creatures, I'm like, I like the cats, even though people don't always love them. They're so good. They are. And I love that the doctor talks about hating hospitals and complains about the lack of a gift shop because I too would critique a place. He wants to shop. He wants to go shopping. Exactly. Rose is a little shocked by the cats, but then the doctor's like, uh, they're shocked by you being all pink and yellow. I do love that the doctor's always defending the aliens. And then, you know what? He hops on an elevator, but Rose is too slow and has to take a separate lift. And guess what? They're both disinfected, which I would love this. You get disinfected, you get dried off, you're all refreshed just by an elevator ride. Hit me with it, babes. And the doctor does go to Ward 26, but Rose's lift is hijacked by her favorite skin suit, and Rose is met at the lift by Lady Cassandra's little menion chip, and Rose immediately clocks that something is off and grabs like a little pipe weapon off the ground, and she's like, Okay, here we go. Always getting into some shenanigans. What do you all think of this whole setup? Because we're about to dive right into some action. Like, this episode doesn't slow down.
SPEAKER_03I love that they start off with gags. You know, the elevator scene is like a very true, tried and true, like gag scene for them. And especially knowing that this particular episode was written so that way Billy could get. Some like comedic relief scenes. Um, this is a good like start off the bat to it.
SPEAKER_02It is because like we get to see Billy be comedic, but that means we also get to see David Tennett be comedic, and we've only really seen him in one episode where we're left with him killing a bunch of aliens, like, ooh, this is the kind of man I am. So I like that we get to see him be a little funsie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and we also get to see Rose not because I think my introduction to Rose was her literally on her first adventure with the doctor. So she like doesn't know what's happening. And so now, many episodes later, um, just popping in randomly to see her immediately go, this is off, and grab a weapon. I'm like, thank you. I feel like so often in television, they're like, what if for this episode we just conveniently let our character forget any basic survival instinct so that the plot can continue? And like we don't see that. And I just appreciate that.
SPEAKER_02You mean she saw a creepy hallway and she's like, this isn't right. I'm gonna grab a weapon because she's like context clues. This isn't okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, like, uh, how often do we see in television where people will sacrifice any bit of character development so that their bad writing can be propelled? And like, we don't have that here.
SPEAKER_02Truly, like you said it beautifully. But, y'all, the doctor does arrive at Ward 26 and is escorted around by Sister Jet. And we do have to pause because we love Sister Jet, played by Adjwa Ando, who a lot of us know from Bridgerton, but she does pop up in series three as Martha Jones's mother, a hot girl, a bad bitch. I love this actress so much. She is my style icon, Shannon. I will send you pictures and you'll get it.
SPEAKER_04She's so fabulous.
SPEAKER_03I love her. All right, all right. It's it's just hard because like I just see the cat. Now you see the cat, but just you wait.
SPEAKER_02And then I love that they immediately like drive by the Duke of Manhattan who's dying from something called petrified regression. He'd be turning into a stone, y'all. And his assistant, I love his assistant because you just know she gets shit done. She's like, you do not look at him, you do not tell anybody what is happening. This woman is probably working for a certain lizard dying right now. And look at your face. I love it. So the doctor knows there isn't a cure for this guy's illness for like another thousand years, but Sister Jat's confident in the sisterhood. She interrogates him about who he's actually there to see. She's like, um, usually people know who they're seeing in a hospital. What's up? You're being weird. But then he spots the face of Bo, who we also saw in the end of the world. That's our guy. And we learn that he is dying of old age, and we meet the novice Haym, who's basically his carer, gives him the little smoke he needs to live. And then we get the little tales of the face of Bo, like they're little fairy tales, and that his dying message will be for the one who's lived for thousands, perhaps millions of years, a wanderer without a home, a lonely god. And we immediately know that it is the doctor because duh. I also do like that technically he could be a million years old, Paige, like timeless child theory down the line. Yeah. I love it. So we get that little message, but then we gotta go down to Rose because she's about to have a little fun. She walks into this room, and it's like, I love to just see an old film projector. It's like a little reel, and it shows this beautiful blonde woman at a fancy party, and then like you see somebody saying, Oh, you look so, so beautiful, which might be important later. And then next thing you know, Rose turns to see our beautiful skin trampoline, Lady Cassandra. And her brain survived the supposed death and is inside a little jar, like at the base of her skin suit. This is so silly. And they framed a sheet of her skin from her backside. So as Rose says, You're talking out of your ass.
SPEAKER_04It's so good.
SPEAKER_02It's so good. And then we meet our guy Chip, like properly. We learn that he's a force-grown clone devoted to taking care of our lady Cassandra, and he smuggled her to the hospital. She beckons Rose closer to tour, and she's like, Mm, the cat nuns are up to something suspicious. They have secrets, they're hiding something. But she also tricks Rose and transports her own consciousness into Rose's mind with a little device called a psychograft. Sure. I just saw like little electricity hitting her wrists, and I'm like, I believe it, sure. We've seen Freaky Friday. That's all we need to know. Exactly. We love it. Good for you, Jodie Foster. Cassandra is devastated to learn that I'm a chev, but she does love her curves because it's like living in a bouncy castle. But Cassandra, her little whatever is left of her skin and brain, they're dead. And Rose's mind is still in her body, so she's like, mmm, I can access the surface of Rose memories. I'm gonna be like, oh wait, there's a new doctor. He's got a new face, he's a hypocrite for judging me. But she also needs to discover the sisterhood's secrets because she's like, I need to be around for a long time because Lady Cassandra's goal in life is survival of being the last human. It's wild. She's up to no good. The doctor calls Rose on the phone, and sorry. This scene is so funny because I love that Cassandra asks Chip how Rose speaks, just like whispering off to the side. And Billy Piper is so good at this comedy because the voice she makes is so weird. And when Chip's like, uh, it's kind of like Cockney, when she's like, hello, Govna, giving her full Dick Van Dyke best.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she really is like, move over uh I'm Bert now.
SPEAKER_02It's so funny. The doctor's like, uh, how long's it take to get to Ward 26? And you know what? She just lip synks for her life through this conversation and just heads upstairs to meet him. And back upstairs, the doctor is shocked to see a cured Duke of Manhattan, and he asks Matron Casp about it, but she evades his the questions before being called away by Sister Jet. They go to this creepy, like, pod room and it's glowing green, and each one of these things are full of patience, and they open one of them and they're amazed that this like patient can speak, and they are like just commenting on it, just like an observation. They would be amazing top model judges right now. And next thing you know, Matron Cast is like, mm-hmm, incinerate that. Can't be alive. Don't like that. What do we think of this creepy setup? Because it's obvious the nuns are hiding something, even Cassandra knows. What did you think about this whole clone moment?
SPEAKER_03So I I really like the theme that like we see all throughout the episode of like how important human touch is. Um, and it's like referenced a little bit whenever uh we see uh Lady Cassandra for the first time because she talks about how she gets stroked.
SPEAKER_02Um and then Oh yes, Chip is devoted to her, he moisturizes her, he strokes her, and Rose is like, that's enough.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And and then, like, then we go into these like other um diseased humans, and and they've never been touched, they've never been because that's how the de disease spreads. Um, and so I I loved that like theme of how you know, good touch versus no touch and how that like affects a person. I thought that was a really cool way to think about the human experience.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I just think of the way that these nuns are just like shocked that these patients can speak like just by themselves because they've been isolated so much. And this episode, it does make me think a little too hard about what's going on and all the evils in the universe, which I'm like, maybe I should just think of this as a TV show sometimes. It's a little too real.
SPEAKER_03So it weirdly reminded me, not that like I'm like trying to like say that the human experience is like a fish's experience, but like a lot of times, like people will tell you, oh, fish don't don't experience pain, they don't experience, but I don't really know that for a fact, and who is to say that? And also, like, a all a fish does all day is like fight for its life, and now you've introduced this other thing of like any bug could possibly have a hook on it, and you could possibly I don't know. So, anyway, for some reason it this reminded me of fishing.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you're not wrong, it's the very same principles at play. But y'all, our little Cassandra Rose joins the doctor upstairs and he shares his confusion at the sisters having vaccines for several incurable diseases that they shouldn't have. But before they investigate, the doctor's like, uh, why do you sound so strange? And I do like that Cassandra's like, oh, you know, new earth, new her, whatever, trying to just play it off. And then immediately distracts him with a kiss because if there's one thing Russell's gonna do, it's let David Tennett kiss somebody. This man, I mean, this is ground zero of him being a slut, which slut complimentary. Beautiful people should kiss. I do like that. He's like, Yep, still got it. Paige, I'm surprised you're not talking more about the kissing. I mean, I'm just smiling, thinking about it.
SPEAKER_04I can do that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it goes very well into her good for Lady Cassandra, trans icon.
SPEAKER_04I mean, yes, good for her, good for everybody. I'm just thinking about like, again, how good Billy Piper is in this, because she gets to have so much fun and play around, and she gets to like lean into that sultriness being Cassandra and Rose's body. Because usually, like, we know Rose is fully in love with the doctor at this point. Yes, and she's attracted to him, but she's more hesitant, she's not just jumping on him, but when she's Cassandra, she gets to have fun.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. So the doctor and like Cassandra Rose, they stumble upon that intensive care unit, which is all the pod patients, and they discover these artificially grown humans that have been infected with every disease, so the sisters can create cures from their human farm. Uh, it's disgusting. And I feel so bad because the doctor's like, just don't touch them. The air is a disinfectant, but if you touch them, you will die. It is awful. And then the doctor confronts novice Haim, who's just hanging out there for some reason, sure. And she's like, Oh, they're not real humans. And you know what? We tried other alternatives, they don't feel anything. It's fine. And the doctor's like, you probably incinerate thousands of them a day. What is going on here? This is not okay. And so the doctor's like, I can understand all of what you're doing right now. But then he's like, What have you done with Rose? And he's like, demanding, and she's like, Uh, I have no idea what you're talking about. Not entirely sure. And he's fully clocked Rose's lack of empathy for the artificial humans as why it's not real Rose. And that's when Cassandra reveals herself and knocks the doctor out with her little cleavage perfume and shoves him into the empty patient pod. Paige, you have been on the Rose empathy train. This is your thesis of the show.
SPEAKER_04I, yeah, that's why I love this moment because I mean, if Cassandra knew anything about Rose, it's that she's going to seek people out and like be in tune with what is going on in their lives and like connect with everyone she meets, no matter if they're an alien or like where it is, when it is. So that's a really good moment to me.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. You can tell that Cassandra's really like that surface deep part of Rose that she can see. It is truly only surface deep. Yeah. But I do like that as the doctor is just like in this little pod, he's about to be injected with like all these thousands of incurable diseases. Cassandra's just right outside the door, blackmailing the sisterhood, demanding money in exchange for her silence. And this is when I this got so campy because she's like, You don't even have weapons to stop me. And then the cats just boom, shoot out their claws like little baby wolverines, and try to attack her.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry, Chelsea. The quote is who needs arms when we have claws?
SPEAKER_02This is a Joel Schumacher film. This is a Batman and Robin right now. I was losing it. I loved it.
SPEAKER_04I wanted more of that. Give us those one-liners.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, we do get some silliness because Cassandra has chip released all the plagued patients to create a distraction so she can escape, but the doctor is escaping with her, and Sister Jet is cornered and is killed almost instantly when an infected person touches her, and then the plagued humans quickly take over, and the hospital is fully put under quarantine. Which, you know, the signs were there for us. Twenty, fifteen years ahead of time. Look at me doing math. But Chip is separated from the doctor and the Cassandra rose, and Cassandra just leaves him there to die, which shows you where Cassandra is at this point. This poor clone human has devoted himself, and he just just throws him away. That's awful. But the doctor demands Cassandra leave Rose's body, but since her body is dead, she has to hop right into the doctor, and he immediately starts. Well, Cassandra immediately starts flirting with Rose. Again, queer icon, trans icon, Lady Cassandra. And I do like that she's commenting on his two hearts and his hardly used parts before taunting Rose and telling her she knows she thinks the doctor is attractive. And before she can go too far in the taunting, they're about to be breached by the patients. And they just have to like find a ladder and start crawling up that sucker before the patients get them, and it's like in an abandoned lift. I love a good chase scene, and this one is so fun.
SPEAKER_03It's like Scoopy Doo meets Freaky Friday.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. At what point would you guys just like skedaddle on out? Be like, take me, plagued people.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, it is kind of like a zombie type situation where you're like, do I just give up? That would be me. I don't like zombies. Just RIP. See you later. And also all that physical activity, you aren't climbing. You are having to use both upper and like I when have I gone to the gym for leg day? Never. Never.
SPEAKER_02You also have to have the coordination for it. My poor guy, Ryan Sinclair, would hate this moment. Oh yeah. Be awful. But I do like this great bit of just comedy because Lady Cassandra is just passing like back and forth between the doctor and Rose's bodies. And I like that the doctor is just demanding he get out of Rose's body. But then Rose is like, actually, we need the doctor to do some Sonicing stuff. Get come back into my body. And this is as the carriers are just chasing them. Eventually, Matron Cass tries to stop them and grabs Rose's foot, but then a carrier grabs like Cass's ankle and she's instantly infected and falls to her death. But also, we get the silliest little CGI lift tunnel fall. It is so silly.
SPEAKER_04And it's so long. Those are the moments where I'm like, I love this show.
SPEAKER_02Listen, they actually had to add time for this because of all the bad production delays and lost shots of the int scene. Well, now we know where we put the time.
SPEAKER_03They lost shots, they just lost them?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like, turns out camera wasn't working.
SPEAKER_04Oh. A show that's been in production for a full season already.
SPEAKER_03That's what I'm saying. It's like, oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_02Shannon has already been on too for like the episodes where it was a shit show. Yeah. Which is most of them. Morgan's was the most expensive episode, the first one. They just blew all their money because they're like, we can do this in CG, CG, CG. No, we shouldn't have done all that.
SPEAKER_01I appreciate that you put me on for that, have me on for that episode. Because when I was um class president, I blew my administration's entire budget on pizza in the first month. So I'm really glad that I could just bring that same energy to what else would you do?
SPEAKER_04I mean, everyone needs pizza.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I ran on a pizza Friday platform and I delivered.
SPEAKER_02Um, am I concerned that it's not delivery, it's disorno's.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it was little Caesar's pizza, actually, if we're gonna be right back.
SPEAKER_02I have questions about the budget because I know those had to be five dollar pizzas at the time.
SPEAKER_01And it again, it was a month.
SPEAKER_03So pizzas add up, Chelsea. Good lord.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's what four Fridays. I, you know, for someone who was just ordering pizza with her heart and not with fiscal responsibility, this is what happens.
SPEAKER_02I love when we put children in charge of money and pizza. I love this platform. I'm here for it. I see no problems as a person who had to order a lot of pizza in college. Shannon knows.
SPEAKER_03We ate a lot of pizza, so much production pizza.
SPEAKER_02But y'all, the doctor like caps she down the elevator. She bye-bye. Like, there will be no other consequences for her actions. She done got got. But the doctor is back to demanding Cassandra leave Rose's body, and she does briefly jump into the body of a plagued person. And Rose is like, eventually they figure it out because Cassandra jumps back into Rose's body, and y'all, our girl is shook. Cassandra is able to see inside the mind of the little plague patient and how lonely they are and how starved for touch they are. And this really does change her. And just Billy Piper is acting because she is going from like the campious camp scenery chewing, like gloriousness, to just this completely devastated, void of anything person. And when like the doctor just reaches a hand out to take Cassandra's hand as Rose, it's such a beautiful moment. I'm like, Billy Piper, all the awards. You deserved everything, the world.
SPEAKER_03I loved that we went from this like super kooky moment with David Tennett, like as Cassandra, like it just being silly, um, right to like a moral center. Like it really like hit you like a Mac truck uh because of the juxtaposition of the scene before.
SPEAKER_02And I like that it's Lady Cassandra because we know she's the most selfish, murderous person, and like survival is her only thing. So for her to experience this and be changed so quickly, I do really love. But also, she doesn't lose her spice because she is still fun in the end. So they make their way all the way back up to Ward 26, and even though it's quarantined, they prove they're not infected, and the doctor is not gonna sacrifice these little plagued humans because, like, after hearing what Cassandra's like, he's like, no, these are human humans. They're like, sure, we have to save them. And so he gets to cooking, quite literally. He has everyone gather all the different vaccines in the ward, and he like just straps it all to himself, empties them all into the disinfectant tank in the like elevator lift, and then he draws all the plague patients to the lifts. And you know what? He disinfects and cures them all. And it is so cute because we don't get to celebrate everybody living all the time. So this is a good everybody lives, and not only that, Lady Cassandra's helped him create a new subspecies of humans. And you know what? I love that he's like, you can't deny it, you created them. You're not the last human. And it is so much fun just to see him kind of gloat over it, but her be annoyed but proud of herself.
SPEAKER_04And it's good to see him directly like save a bunch of people after the last time we saw him and the Christmas invasion, where he took out a bunch of people, as we mentioned. And so, and at this point, like with this new version of the doctor, we don't know entirely what he's about. And so it's good to see that he's not just running around murdering everybody.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because we were like, he was gonna let the bad aliens go away. And then the guy tried to kill him, take a cheap shot, and he the doctor killed him first, and then he was like a very judgy judgy person whenever Harriet Jones killed a bunch of aliens right after that. And it's like, buddy, you just murdered an alien too. He did a so now we're seeing him save an entire new population. So it's kind of nice that his doctor is like gonna keep us on our toes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. There's some interesting uh Ethical stuff that comes up this season. I mean, as it always does in Doctor Who, but it's interesting with this new iteration of the Doctor.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. And so, like, as the sisterhood is arrested, the Doctor remembers the face of Bo, wanted to speak to him, and Cassandra complains about like Bo's telepathy that he just likes directly into the mine. And that's because you can't just muppet that like face of Bo prop, which, like, looking ahead, one of our sad fun facts is Billy Piper's then boyfriend accidentally broke the face of Bo prop. And so that delayed filming even more. That's insane. I know. And I think he's in one of the Doctor Hugh museums or like exhibits. He was definitely at the San Diego Comic-Con one. He just looks so cool. It's one of my favorite props. It's amazing. So is it like actually like a prop in a jar? It is an actual prop in a jar. And it's like oh, that's so massive. Right, Shannon. I feel like you would want something like that in your home.
SPEAKER_03I I feel like I'm working on something right now. I'm I'm gonna make it. I don't know what with what or how, but actually, remember that thought for later.
SPEAKER_02Paige, write it down. I'm writing it down. So Bo telepathically tells them that he has grown ti he had grown tired of the universe and was ready to die, but the doctor gave him like renewed life, a new perspective. And instead of giving him his final message, he says, it'll wait for a third and final meeting before he teleports away. And I just like that the face of Bo was dying of old age, but actually it was like, bitch, I'm depressed.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04He's always so vague and so sad, and I just want to give his little face a hug. I love him.
SPEAKER_02He's so relatable. Face of Bo is just like us. Yeah, a sad girl. Uh, yes. I bet the face of Bo would love a Lord concert.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. He has tickets to the new Phoebe Bridgers tour for sure.
SPEAKER_02He's very pissed that you have to put your phone in a pouch beforehand. But then the doctor demands that Cassandra leave Rose's body, and Chip, guess what? He survived. He like hid away from all the plagued people, and he volunteers to like give his body to Lady Cassandra. And like the doctor is saying, no, don't do that. But she does it anyways. And the doctor is like, um, you we're gonna get you a new skin suit, you're gonna be held responsible for your crimes in court, blah, blah, blah. I don't like that the cop like the doctor is so pro-cop right now. Like, whatever. Yes, she did crimes, but you know what? She's also suffered. I wouldn't say he's pro-cop. He's pro the justice system. That's true. This is before the doctor's been to prison, by the way. So, and unfortunately, though, Lady Cassandra's like, yes, it would be a great day. I'd have my best hat, but Chip's body is failing. And Lady Cassandra does in that moment like accept her impending death. And the doctor does give her a kindness and takes the Cassandra Chip version all the way back to the moment we saw in the projected video earlier. And so Chip goes up to Lady Cassandra, played by the actress Zoe Wanemacher. She's the voice of Lady Cassandra. So I love that she got to appear as a human in this. And Chip tells her, You look so beautiful. You look so, so beautiful. And that was like the last nice thing anybody told her in her original human form. So I love that this created a little paradox that she got to tell herself that she was beautiful. That moment kind of gave me chills a little bit. Power of great actresses and great actors. Like these are characters that we've seen once and twice, but it still really works.
SPEAKER_04It does. And Lady Cassandra has a lot more lore in the Doctor Who universe than we get to see on screen. Like she has her own comics, and we get into more of her backstory.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's a great short story about her.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It hits a little harder.
SPEAKER_03It is. I appreciated the huge black cloak that was worn um for that final scene. It was just like so beautifully dramatic to like see it just like sprawled out across the floor. It's so pretty.
SPEAKER_02But after she says this, and like she's so genuinely touched the like original version of Cassandra, um, the Cassandra chip version just tragically passes out in her arms, and Lady Cassandra holds him as he dies, and people are ignoring her cries for help because that's kind of where we are in that version of Earth and society. So, and like as all that's happening, Rose and the Doctor, they just quietly leave, and that's our episode. I don't know. I love this because Lady Cassandra, we're just gonna queer it up immediately. In like the short story we get that's in like one of the Doctor Who monster books, and it's always expanded upon in all the extended universe materials. Um, there's the like we learn more about her life and her parents. In the original episode, she grew up as a little boy, which the language is not great then, but eventually has like so many husbands who die under mysterious circumstances. And it looks like she's quite the star. I need to share one of the posters, actually, for a film that Lady Cassandra is in, because it is like a hot girl, a bad bitch.
SPEAKER_03Okay. So Mind My Legs.
SPEAKER_02Mind My Legs, one of her B movies, and it's in the story Lives of the Rich and Thin. I love her so much. Here's like another little Cassandra thing, like a little comic, How Dare they? And it's just her being hung up on to dry with clothes. That's so silly. It's so funny. I love the actress so much, too. She does a great job. She's so silly.
SPEAKER_04I wish we could have seen more of like her human years somehow.
SPEAKER_02Listen, there's still time. They could go back to her human years. They could be the inciting incident of her just being awful. I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So with this, with this episode, I also want to make sure that we're um giving a little appreciation to David Tennant. Because every time I see a boy that I think is cool, I have to Google him because I'm like, oh no, what bad thing has he done? This is not a bad man.
SPEAKER_04This is a good man. He is, yeah. He's a sweetie, and he stands up for a lot of different minority groups and is like a good person.
SPEAKER_03An award for allyship in 2024.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. He regularly like fights with the horrible Harry Potter lady and like actively fights. And like we've said it before on the show, like on his birthday post that his wife posted on Instagram because like he doesn't have his own social media, she just posts stuff. Um, he's like, David said to make sure, like, to support the trans community in every one of the posts. It's so great. I love that she uses her platform for so much good. They are wonderful.

SPEAKER_02But yes, let's talk about the real villains of this episode. Matron Casp and the Sisters of Plentitude of Cat Kind. Y'all, I love, first off, I don't know if it'll show up very well, but they're really serving in the Doctor Who villain book.
SPEAKER_04Like they are. That would be such a good obscure Halloween costume.
SPEAKER_02We need to get y'all some cat costumes. Also, they do return in season three, one of them does. And they look like a little pilot. I love that episode. Same. I cannot wait. Shannon, would you like to come back for the cat episode and series three?
SPEAKER_03Of course. I mean, give me cats dressed up as anything. I love it.
SPEAKER_04I love it so much. We need to have some appreciation for the makeup artists and the hairstylists on that set because they're famous. Yeah, like that's really well done. And you would not see that today. No, it would be a Tom Hooper.
SPEAKER_01A Tom Hooper production could never no.
SPEAKER_02This looks so much better than a Tom Hooper production, is the crazy part. I thought this they looked so good. Also, just the origins of cat kind is kind of crazy. It's described in this Doctor Who monsters book. So when the human race began to colonize the galaxy, they took their pets with them. Inevitably, some of the colonies fell prey to space plagues and the humans died, but sometimes their pets survived. Given the right conditions and sufficient amount of time, those pets would evolve just as humans had evolved on Earth. Shannon is like, this is my future.
SPEAKER_03I just, I think it's cute. I just do I just like cute things right now. I'm just in a real cutesy phase in my life.
SPEAKER_02Isn't it great? But yes, they some behind the scenes of this episode, they kept Lady Cassandra's little skin sheet scenes to a minimum because they learned from series one. Guess what? It's really difficult animation and it's super expensive. Maybe we shouldn't do that. We're gonna just make Billy Piper be an icon a legend. And then poor Billy Piper, she was sick filming, and guess what? It accidentally delayed production even more. Here is one of the questions. After how Rose was portrayed in series one, did it feel a bit weird to see the Cassandra scene where she puts herself into Rose and then seeing this character whose looks, while very attractive, weren't really commented on, suddenly have it put it at the forefront, even if it wasn't quite her. It always felt kind of odd to me. So, yes, people do feel weird about like the sexualization of Billy Piper in this episode, which I think is completely valid because considering her career at the time, like coming off being a pop star and the paparazzi were just constantly hounding her right now. She was going through a very public breakup at the time. I do think, yes, it is okay to feel very some kind of way about how the show portrays Billy Piper. Mostly because just the way this show is with women can be very gross sometimes, certain showrunners, we shall say. I think I was just more like just how immediately she was into the doctor and wanted to kiss him. That's what threw me at first. And I know it's trying to play into the romance of Doctor and Rose, but it didn't feel too odd to me, the comment on the looks, because Lady Cassandra is so like vain and focused on her looks.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. And she's such a big character, and they play everything off very comedically, and again, big. So it's not like it's subtle or at all. It's supposed to be ridiculous, and she is obsessed with her looks, so naturally she'd be like, Oh, look at me. I have all these good features, and exactly.
SPEAKER_02Like she was very proud of herself as a sheet of skin because of how like skinny and thin she was. So I think that was like the joke of it all. Like, she's in a body now and she's so jiggly, she's like not used to it. But no, you don't have to comment on it. She would, and I think it wasn't like too off-putting or anything. It didn't feel too odd to me, but I can understand why it would be a little weird for other people. Just because we shouldn't be commenting on body types, especially in 2026, but that was 2006, written in 2005. So the way we talked about people's bodies was very different back then.
SPEAKER_04At least it was like complimentary and not shaming anyone's body.
SPEAKER_02And you know, Billy Piper was probably just having fun. Oh, yeah, for sure. Oh, love it. Thank you, novel. Thank you. Oh, here are some comments from our friend She Regenerated. They do have some thoughts about the first trans character being so Nazi-like because Lady Cassandra, pureblood human supremacist, and there are so many, like, she has so many thoughts about that. And yes, I do think Lady Cassandra being such a complicated, evil character, it's like sometimes it is gay rights and gay wrongs because there are people who benefit from the systems and love to oppress other people, even though they could easily be oppressed as well. I think that is just a reality we live in. Like, again, Morgan, we see it every day. There are so many, just at the very basic, women aligning themselves with groups of people who are ready to just dispose of them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, isn't the quote, um, I don't support all women, some of you bitches are dumb. Like, there is this cognitive dissonance that happens when people are in proximity to privilege. Um and I think that yeah, there there is a prickliness to like choosing this character that does have um a lot of alignment to the queer community and queerness and the trans community. But I think that there is something that happens when people are looking. I mean, you have Caitlin Jenners who exist in this world who have benefited so much from certain aspects of their identity, and when they could use their position to further the benefit of a marginalized and vilified and attacked community, one that they say that they belong to, she continues to align herself with power and privilege, even though she no longer fits the mold of what that ultimate power and privilege is. I always like to say, because as a white woman, I can say it, white women love to assume that assimilation to positions of power is liberation from it. And that's not how that works. And so I think Lady Cassandra gets to be our surrogate there to kind of interrogate that.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Yes. It's very much like all of that is a much smarter way of saying that like, don't think of the Taylor Swift women need to support every other woman. It's like, no, not always. Like, there is nuance and complications. Me and Paige are watching it in the Big Brother house right now, because it's what a study in the human behavior.
SPEAKER_04It is yet again. Especially Big Brother, is like a psychological, sociological experiment. It's reflecting like the society that we're in right now. And so does Doctor Who many a time. Many, many a times.
SPEAKER_03The early aughts were a time. They were definitely a moment in time that we all went through. We did.
SPEAKER_04And we're repeating a little bit of that history now.
SPEAKER_02Yes, we are. Y'all, what a delightful conversation. Go us. We had so much to say about what most people think of as just like filler disposable episode. And I'm like, no, I think all of these episodes are at least interesting. Yeah. Yes.
SPEAKER_03I I just really I really um resonated with the human touch like theme throughout it because I know that like during COVID, um, that was something that once we we got through it and I realized how amazing it was to like be in the room with people and like touch people and like just that that different chemistry that you you can't get online. Um, you know, that that theme really resonated with me, and this was a good episode for it.
SPEAKER_02I agree, and I will say, like, it does suck, but I do think we like we as a culture do have to change hearts and minds. We just can't like wait for people to die off or like things to completely change. Like we have to like help people change, and I think Lady Cassandra does have that moment, and sometimes it is you have to walk into the shoes of another person. And I hate that they have to have the most basic, like, we teach this to toddlers, but sometimes we have to teach them the toddler lessons so they can like get on the right track of life because Lady Cassandra does develop an empathy and she does end up help save the day in the end. So maybe we do need to learn how to change hearts and minds and let people reform.
SPEAKER_04I should have said this in our queer corner, really, but the whole stuff with the human touch in this episode, especially with the people that were affected by it being like having all these different diseases, it really made me think about during the AIDS epidemic, how all of those patients, like people refused to touch them and they were villainized, and obviously, like those people just had this horrible thing happen to them, but people acted like you know, either they deserved it or they brought it upon themselves. And again, that just whole thing of like, oh, don't dare touch them, and you know, they don't matter, they're disposable. And I wonder if Russell thought about that when he was writing this episode.
SPEAKER_02Probably, because a lot of his work has addressed that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
