Religious or Spiritual Trauma: Reclaiming Faith on Your Own Terms PT 2

Terror To Triumph +
Exclusive access to premium content!Faith is supposed to be a refuge. So what happens when it becomes a tool for control? We pick up part two of our religious trauma series by naming the moment many people recognize too late: when faith is weaponized, you lose trust in spirituality, you lose comfort, and you can start living under shame, guilt, and fear that never shuts off.
We break down the specific wounds that spiritual abuse can leave behind, from purity culture and body shame to constant dread of punishment, betrayal by leaders, and the isolation that comes from being taught the outside world is “evil.” We also get practical about autonomy. If a belief system or a leader trains you to doubt your own judgment, even basic choices can feel like sin. That is not holiness. That is coercion, and it shows up in relationships, mental health, and even how you care for your body.
Healing starts with clarity. We talk about naming what happened, grieving what you lost, and giving yourself permission to question everything. We also draw a hard line between the divine and the people who used spiritual language to harm you. You can reject their version of God without rejecting spirituality. You get to research, read for yourself, and rebuild at your own pace.
If you have ever felt trapped between your conscience and someone else’s agenda, listen through and share this with someone who needs it. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what belief you are ready to question next.

When Faith Gets Weaponized
SPEAKER_02And I wanted to pick it up from the point of when faith is weaponized, you lose the ability to trust spirituality. Okay? You lose the comfort that faith is supposed to support or provide.
SPEAKER_03You lose the connection to something larger than yourself. Also, I'm about to go to work.
SPEAKER_02I wanted to tell you guys I have my reflective vest on because uh as soon as I finish this, I will be running out of here to work. So I apologize for having my work clothes on, but it was imperative for me to do this show, pre-record this, so I could give you the information that you need to finish off this series.
SPEAKER_03So, excuse me.
SPEAKER_02When faith is weaponized, you lose these connections, okay? You're left with the shame, the guilt, and the confusion. So you might not know what you want to believe, or what you have to believe, or what you want to focus on believing. It becomes a little shaky, right? You might not know who you are outside of the religion, who you're supposed to be as a person, because now your core beliefs are shaken. So religious trauma is insidious because it operates on a spiritual level, a level that you deeply are encrusted in. You have this core part of your being, and you're being told X, Y, Z, which is not right. I'm going, I'm trying not to go off. I've been known to go off a little bit. But I'ma I'm a really try hard to stay focused on this one. But this one is a is a tough one. And it's hard for me, and this is dedicated to those of you who have suffered under the hands of religion and people forcing their views through God on you, using God or your spirituality, or whatever deity you choose to believe in, using that to force you into a box or coerce you to do things that you wouldn't do. Okay. Okay, so it doesn't just harm your mind, it harms your soul, okay? It tells you you're fundamentally broken first, and that God doesn't love you, that you're unworthy of grace that he has for you, which is to say you did wrong, but I'll give forgive you for the wrongs that you've done because I'm trying to get you into the kingdom of heaven for Christianity. But whatever that may be for your belief. So your your beliefs are already run deep, right? So they're embedded in your identity, who you are, becomes part of that. So they shape how you see yourself and how you see the world around you. So when that happens, the trauma becomes tangible. Because now you're interacting with other people, and that interaction can be kind of dicey at that point.
SPEAKER_03The truth.
SPEAKER_02I said I wasn't gonna go off topic. But y'all know the current state of events in our country in the United States, right? You know that they claim the war with Israel is a holy war, right? It's not just them saying that, not just a soundbite for the news media. That's to target you. It's your core beliefs to make you feel like you're fighting for the right thing.
SPEAKER_03Control. That's control, okay. This trauma needs to be named and it needs to be healed, okay?
Shame Guilt And Feeling Broken
SPEAKER_03So let's talk about specific wounds that may uh derive from trauma, this type of trauma.
SPEAKER_02You get the shame, which you were taught that your body is sinful, your desires are sinful, you're fundamentally bad. Like, if you you don't come to me, you know, to receive the knowledge of how to be healed. You you're just terrible. You are you're an awesome person. Okay, you internalize this shame. You learn to hate yourself. I hate the way I am, I don't like the way I am. You try to hide yourself and you punish yourself for being who you are.
SPEAKER_03There's a lot of problems with that, but I'm I'm I'm gonna stop there and then we'll go forward.
SPEAKER_02As an adult coming up from those teachings, you may have some deep shame about your body. You might feel guilt about your desires or struggle with your self-worth. Okay, you could punish yourself for your own perceived sins, what you think is a sin, okay? You might feel unlovable, like nobody can love you like you want because you're messed up. And nobody's gonna want that. At least that's the way you would feel because of all this. You would believe that you're fundamentally broken. There's nothing nobody can do to fix you. Okay? When they use fear, you can feel like you were taught that God is watching everything you do, and you're gonna mess up, you're gonna make a mistake, and God's not gonna forgive you for that.
SPEAKER_03If you keep messing up, He don't He don't forgive you. The hell is real and waiting. Okay.
SPEAKER_02I'm a person I believe in purgatory. You know, the devil is real. If we believe God is real, we can't say devil's not. You know? That's like saying, I got one body, but I don't believe I got a foot. Or I I believe I got a heart, but I don't believe I got lungs. I got a head, but I don't got no shoulders, head and shoulders. Okay, I just made a joke out of that.
SPEAKER_03But anyway, these are the things that cause a friction, if you will, within your thought process as far as religion goes.
SPEAKER_02God removed himself from the world. If you don't remember, or if you haven't read the Bible, God removed himself and he sent his son after the 400-year silence, right? So God went down in man form, Yeshua, and Yeshua did all these things to redeem man or make a path for man to redeem himself.
SPEAKER_03Yahuwah wants everybody to be redeemed.
SPEAKER_02But you were given the choice to choose or not to choose. That's the dichotomy of it. But we're not supposed to be the moral judge of what another person chooses to do. That's the problem. We're trying to say, you you better do this, you better do this. We're not supposed to come at you like that. Jesus didn't come at us like that.
SPEAKER_03Yeshua didn't come at us like that.
SPEAKER_02He just said, What is, what, what is this is what this is, this is what this is, this is what this is. And they hated him for that because he told the truth. Because they were living in sin and they didn't want to stop. They wanted to continue doing what they were doing. So, I mean, yeah, so man is still doing that, man is still trying to control, and man is still trying to force his whims through religion on people. Sodisees and Pharisees is the terms that come to mind concerning the Bible and Yeshua's time, okay.
Fear Doctrine And Constant Dread
SPEAKER_02Anyway, so you learn to live in fear, fear of God, and fear of punishment, and fear of damnation, right? So now you have this anxiety, right? Feel like you're being watched all the time. You feel like you're afraid to be judged. You expect punishment. Like, I know I'm about to get it for this. I feel you feel like bad things are your fault. Bad things to happen are are your fault. Or you live in constant dread. Don't want to see the next day because you can't fix what's already broken, right? Or you can feel betrayed. And people who are supposed to protect you in the faith use that faith against you or to harm you. It could be a parent, it could be a religious leader, it could be the community of people. You trusted them, you believed in them, and they betrayed you. I gotta make another caveat right here. Bible says not to trust in man. That's the scripture. If you look it up in the Bible, you'll find it. If you do a web search, you can find it. I'm just telling you what it is.
SPEAKER_03Now, you're not supposed to believe in man, you're supposed to believe in the creator. Right? You're supposed to believe in the spirit that's in all things, right?
SPEAKER_02You're supposed to believe that there is redemption through his son. Speaking of Christianity now.
SPEAKER_03So you're supposed to believe in Yeshua. So why would a person betray you in the religion? Why would a person tell you you need to be in church every Sunday? Yeshua did his work at all times.
SPEAKER_02Except for when he went and took his sabbatical up in the mountain, or when he stepped away from the congregation of people so he could be by himself, so he can commune with God on his own. That's not to say that you should just leave church, but I'm saying we need to be more aware of how these leaders are treating us, the things they say they want us to do, and how that impacts us in our lives if we do them. Okay. If it lines up with a word and what the word wants, and it says that particular thing, they're not paraphrasing, they're not trying to change up what's in the word to say what they're trying to say because they're trying to make some kind of flashy word play in their sermon or something. Stay focused on the word, y'all. Okay? Stay focused on the word. And as you grow spirituality, you can move on to learn more things about God that's not in the Bible, but read for yourself. That's the cornerstone of learning who God is, is to read the Bible. If you don't read it, if you're not really truly trying to find out, then you're subject to the whims of everybody who's teaching. Not all people who are teaching are teaching the right thing. So I just wanted to say that to you guys. Okay, moving on. Now, as an adult, you might have difficulty trusting authority figures. You might be suspicious of spiritual leaders. That goes without saying. You might feel betrayed by God because you felt that God let you go down this path. Or you might feel that God turned his back on you. You might struggle with your faith. Like, I don't know. This is seemed this way, this one seems this way. This verse means this, but I'm doing this, and I don't know. Or you might even have trouble with your community. People are coming to you, why didn't you do this? Or how come this? How come that? I didn't see you in service. I mean, it could be a myriad of things, but it's up to you and your perception of how you receive those things. So people can ask questions. Don't mean they wrong, don't mean they right, but people can ask questions. There's no law against people asking questions. But when people interject their own spirituality onto you, it becomes a problem, okay, if that's not in line with what you're trying to do. And this can make you feel isolated. So you push yourself away from the people who you thought were there to help you, okay?
Titles Control And Lost Autonomy
SPEAKER_02You were told who to be, okay? I've seen this happen. You're gonna be a minister, you're gonna be an evangelist, you're gonna be a pastor, you're gonna be a deacon.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_02Why are we so focused on titles? If you look in the Bible and you read the Bible for yourself, nowhere does it say in the Bible Alfonso Pell is ordained to be a bishop. Doesn't say that. It doesn't say God is coming to you to give you your title. It doesn't say that. Not everybody is going to have a title. Not everybody is ordained to have a title. And I'm not talking about manly ordination, I'm talking about divinity.
SPEAKER_03You let man talk to you all he wants.
SPEAKER_02If you let that man get in your ear and he'll just lead you on wherever he needs to lead you. You'll be led for years, decades, and you'll think that you'll be doing right. But if you don't read for yourself, you won't learn to discern the fruits that are before you. What fruits is this man bearing? What fruits is this woman bearing? What fruits is this church bearing? You won't know. That's why I keep saying that over and over again. You're gonna continue to hear me keep saying, in this, in this message, you're gonna keep hearing me say, read the book for yourself. Not just the Bible. If you are Muslim, read the Quran for yourself. If you studied Buddhism or Buddhism, read those ancient texts for yourself. But the the key is to read and understand, gain an understanding of what you read. Now, if somebody teaching doesn't align with what you read, you can ask questions. I don't want to get ahead of myself. Okay, so you can struggle with not knowing what to believe because the confusion is there. You can struggle with autonomy, which is making your own decisions, trying to figure out, okay, I don't want to go against God, but I don't know if I should go grocery shopping today because I ain't got no food in the house, but they told me I had to be in church. God will provide. Okay, but the grocery store is gonna be closed by the time I get out.
SPEAKER_03You can push a few meals away, but I haven't eaten in two days. We got some food for you, just come to church. Okay, what are we doing here?
SPEAKER_02Okay, making decisions, convoluting your mind with the agenda of others. Okay, so you can feel lost without religion. If you step away, or if you haven't been to a church in a while, you can start to feel a disconnect. Okay, when I say religion, I mean the practice of the many who practice Christianity. I'll do the air quotes of Christianity because I don't believe in the term of Christianity. Yes, we are followers of Christ. That's true. But Christ didn't give us that title. People in the world did. We call ourselves followers of Christ, true enough. But that does that mean we should accept another term from somebody else? Are they Christians? They wasn't making that as a joke because they follow Christ, they must be Christians. You know, people do that all the time. Did you do something like, you know, people who follow Trump, people make jokes about them.
SPEAKER_03Are they lackeys of Trump, Trump lackeys? Okay, well, you're making fun of them. But they could turn those words around and say, I'm a trumpeter.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I'm just saying, speaking for a friend, we're gonna put the truth out there. We're gonna speak the truth here. We're not gonna sugarcoat nothing, all right? I just want to put that out there. Y'all should already know because of the past episodes. But anyway, okay, you can also fall into the category of not knowing what you want. Because you might have wanted some things, but now because you're studying this religion, this teaching is bad doctrine. You could say, I don't know if I should want that anymore, or I don't need that anymore. It could be something that you really want. Like I want an Xbox. They could say that video games are the devil. They got all this demonology in it. You don't need no Xbox. But I like playing video games. I always have. But now I gotta look at it like I need to probably sell my Xboxes. People would have you living in an empty apartment. If you let everybody tell you one thing or another, if you're not strong enough mentally. What was I hate colloquialisms, but this one kind of fits. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. It's that kind of deal, right? So brainwashing, uh using spirituality, spirituality to do it is a major factor, especially here in America. So here's another
Purity Culture And Sexual Shame
SPEAKER_02point. Okay. You were taught the purity culture. You learn that your body is shameful. You learn that sex is dirty. You learn that desire is sinful. You learn to disconnect from your body, to hate your sexuality, to feel ashamed of being human. Okay. As an adult, you might have difficulty with intimacy. You might feel shame about having sex, or even talking about it for that matter. You might have trouble with pleasure, feeling or receiving pleasure or giving pleasure. You might struggle with your sexuality, your sexual identity. You might have sexual dysfunction, like you can't perform, or it's a mental thing, or maybe physical, or you might feel disconnected from your body altogether, like you just have no feeling one way or another.
SPEAKER_03Like you're numb. So that that comes with a whole nother uh show explanation. I can't even get there with you right on this episode.
Disconnection Isolation And Control
SPEAKER_02So the wound of spiritual disconnection, okay? You were supposed to have connection to something sacred. You're supposed to be something, it's supposed to be something larger than yourself, right? But the religion weaponized that connection and used it against you now can't access spirituality without receiving some form of pain. You can't pray without fear, can't believe without shame. Okay. So as an adult, you might feel spiritually empty. You might have lost faith. You might feel disconnected from the sacred deity that you believe in. You might struggle to find meaning or purpose in your life. You might feel alone in the universe or isolated, and you might grieve the loss of the faith you once had.
SPEAKER_03The wound of isolation. You were told the outside world is evil, that non-believers are lost, that leaving the faith is the worst sin.
SPEAKER_02You are isolated from alternative perspectives, people who think differently from the wider world, right? So as an adult, you might have difficulty connecting with people outside the faith. You might feel like an outsider yourself. You struggle with loneliness because you can't connect. You have a limited worldview because they keep you in this box. You feel behind and understanding the world because you're limited, right? And you have social anxiety because it's hard for you to talk to other people who have different worldviews. Now, the wounds of control is that you were controlled through fear, right? Through shame. The promise of salvation, even that they used against you. So you learn that your autonomy doesn't matter. Don't act on your own, trust God in everything. Do God's will. If God is not speaking to you, just be patient. Okay. That obedience is more important than your well-being. I've heard it and I've seen it firsthand. People tell people, especially, I'm a I'm used to me. My aunt had breast cancer and she was going to, I'm not gonna say what religious uh sect she practiced, but uh she was going to her church and they told her to pray.
SPEAKER_03They told her if you go to the doctor, that means you don't have faith. And she died. So I say that to say that you can't listen to everything.
SPEAKER_02If you feel sick, take care of yourself. If something you feel something is wrong, have it checked out. Your faith does not predicate how you take care of yourself, right? It it should though, because if you love God and you know that God made this wonderful, beautiful vessel for us to live in, then you should want to take care of the vessel, right?
SPEAKER_03If you bash your elbow, do you pray about your elbow or do you put a band-aid on it? You take care of it, right? You don't want to get an affection. You uh got cut at work on some rusty metal. But you don't treat yourself. I'm just saying pause that right there.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06So as I said, you might have difficulty setting out or something.
SPEAKER_04Or wants to say yes, or you might um have a problem saying yes. Um I feel like if you have a movie or have somebody on your side, you don't have somebody to fight for you. Uh you just go with decision making, and that's part of the process, right?
SPEAKER_06We all try to uh be autonomous if we can, and that time helps us for the decisions we have to make, the judgments we have to make calls on. And those things can be taken from us if we allow somebody else to use us to that degree.
SPEAKER_07If we allow somebody to use morality, so we have to we have to make sure that we are focused on what we're reading, we have to take an account of what's actually there in the world.
SPEAKER_06So there's no physical form that you can see, you know, there's uh a lot of mental tests. So we have to really take a feature.
SPEAKER_04Um is about spiritual spiritual finally because you were trying to for you.
SPEAKER_06So if you deviate from that, you're doing your own thing, you're not really practicing the religion, even though you might say you're practicing the religion, you're not practicing parts of it, God don't want anybody to shadow any face.
SPEAKER_07You say you rather have a fire, forest, or a cold that you know the king.
SPEAKER_06Either way, shadow you still want to shadow. That's all that's I can see that you don't harming other people. I can still be there. But if you're not harming someone, you're going down a path by yourself.
SPEAKER_00Well, it can be a little strange for you, you know.
SPEAKER_07So be careful, be careful.
Name The Trauma To Heal
SPEAKER_06Name the trauma. This is part of the healing process, okay?
SPEAKER_05And you have to name what happened.
SPEAKER_06So you can say things like I was spiritually abused. Okay, you could say, my faith was weaponized against me, or you could say, I was taught shame in the name of God, or I was controlled through fear by the admonishment or punishment that God would give me.
SPEAKER_05You can't heal what you don't need.
SPEAKER_06The knowledge, the impact that it made, right? How did the religious trauma affect you? What beliefs did you end up internalizing? What patterns did you see? Does it continue even into the day? If you left, isn't it still? You have to be specific. You have to grieve what you lost. We talked a couple episodes back about how to grieve. So now you know how to grieve, and these are the things you should grieve concerns. Grieve the loss of your faith, the community of people that you trusted in that you lost, the meaning of your life that you lost, because you allowed somebody else to tell you what your meaning was. You could lose the sense of your sacred deity, the the closeness you had to your creator, and those are real losses, y'all.
SPEAKER_07And those deserve to be grieved.
SPEAKER_06I can't stress this part enough.
Question Everything And Do Research
SPEAKER_06Question everything.
SPEAKER_07Question everything. I don't care if they're the biggest, baddest bishop or whoever apostle on the planet.
SPEAKER_05Because if the Bible says trust no man, why you can't question them?
SPEAKER_06What do they hide? What makes them untouchable?
SPEAKER_07And that brings you back to what we talked about earlier.
SPEAKER_06The purity issue. Are they supposed to be so pure that regular people can't touch it?
SPEAKER_07I'm sorry, but Yeshua was the closest thing to purity on earth.
SPEAKER_06Besides when God walked with Adam and Eve. Since he was the closest thing to purity on earth. Period. Outside.
SPEAKER_00Make comments to him. He asked them questions.
SPEAKER_04Some of them didn't.
SPEAKER_06Why? Why are we following these people? They have other agendas that we don't know about.
SPEAKER_07But they care about everybody.
SPEAKER_04You don't know everybody's stuff.
SPEAKER_06This is what we does it serve you?
SPEAKER_07You can question yourself. Is this the right problem? This doesn't feel right. You know, I don't like the fact that the pastor got a wife in church, but then he he's seeing this lady on the side, or he sleeps around his wife and go see my wife.
SPEAKER_06Question everything. Okay, so you don't have to believe what you were told.
SPEAKER_07You get to decide. And do the research. Research it.
SPEAKER_00Don't take that person's word for it. Go research it. You read the Bible, do the research on the Bible. You question that what's in the Bible. What's in the Bible?
SPEAKER_06Well, let me go do the research on the book. I'm just saying what you've got to separate God, your deity, your creator, from the people. And your higher power. But it's not okay. Tell them what the higher power is saying. And that's not what people who hurt you are not God.
unknownInterpretation.
SPEAKER_06Interpretation is the key word here.
SPEAKER_07Just speaking for a friend. Somebody in the back asked me to say that just now.
SPEAKER_06Anyway, so you can reject their version of God without rejecting spirituality. About everything I'm talking about tonight. So you could say, I reject what you taught me about. But I'm open, I'm open. How can I say it? I reject what you taught me about God. But I'm open to discovering God on my own. I'm going to keep reading this book because it keeps telling me the right things to do. Every time I read it, I see more and more of how it's separate from what you're teaching. So I have to discuss God alone.
SPEAKER_00You don't have to say nothing. You can just walk away.
Spirituality Is Personal Take Your Time
SPEAKER_06Our choice, our decisions, our judgment. Concerning our own souls. He made us autonomous in our spirituality concerning him. Talk about Christianity now. So if we have the right to make a choice about how we live, we should do that. If it go against God's willing, we can do that. Of course, I'm not. But I'm saying because we have our own free will, we can do that. It doesn't make it right, it doesn't make it to where it's legal, it doesn't make it to where if it's into society, because spirituality and the reality of God are connected. Spirituality is how we see our deity, our trying to connect to our deity, or wanting to be one with our deity, to communicate with our deity. The reality of God is God's community ready to communicate. We can't focus. Can't get to a fireplace, we can't think we can't think. To silence our minds, we can't even do that. We wake up automatically, our minds are like, we gotta waste the parking lot to wash the clothes, I gotta need the skin at this time. So just wanted to put that out before. Yeah. Spirituality is personal. It's yours. First coach. Spirituality is yours. Excited. Anybody else's? Take your time. Explore. Read. Learn. Listen. Pray. Or not.
SPEAKER_02It's up to you. You can meditate or not. It's up to you. Find what resonates with you. And you don't have to rush back to faith.
SPEAKER_06Take your time.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_06You don't have to run away from the either. Take your time. God wants you to know him.
Scripture Interpretation Healing And Money
SPEAKER_06This passage of the Bible is the steps. Anything that I create would not say is a thing. Anything that I created when I say that it's um what was the terminology that I was giving? I came in in a dream of a certain man. These things weren't a clock, things that were told that they were not sure. So if God told you not to eat these things back in the Old Testament, comes back in the new testament and says, Don't eat these things. Well, why do you say don't eat these things? I create these things. Don't call anything I created impure. Okay. God is pure, he creates pure things. He created our bodies. He didn't create them impure, they were made just the way they were supposed to be. Even though we are missing them. That birth. Yes, that's correct. I said, because God's glory is supposed to be revealed. Healing is supposed to be revealed. And those who walk the path who are of the real healing. You have to make these things happen.
SPEAKER_05Healing is on the level of people with stage four cancer and things like that. We've seen things like that.
SPEAKER_06We see things like brilliant people breathing.
SPEAKER_05And then they were healed. But then we gave everything. We've seen people who couldn't breathe and were able to breathe again. People who couldn't hear and were able to hear. We've seen these things.
SPEAKER_06But now I'm talking about dismemberment. We have not seen those things yet. But Christ said all ease and war will that follow. So who's really following? That's the real question.
SPEAKER_04Who is really following?
unknownI think it's there.
SPEAKER_06Somebody wants to have a lot of family sustained on the house there. Christ, Christ didn't want no money from nobody. Did he ask anybody for money?
SPEAKER_00He told somebody that, yeah, I pay taxes. If he don't pay no taxes, why don't you pay taxes when he owns the whole world?
SPEAKER_06That's why he said give unto God what's God. Give unto Caesar with Caesar. Or I got it back with you. Give unto Caesar Caesar. Give unto give him. Realize who we are, where we are, what's around us and our surroundings, and implement that understanding of who we are.
