WEBVTT 00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:20.320 Welcome to our family service this morning. 00:00:20.559 --> 00:00:23.839 We will begin with a passage from the book of Daniel. 00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:29.679 In this passage, the king, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, has had a dream. 00:00:30.079 --> 00:00:35.679 And in this dream there was a large tree, the animals and birds were nourished by it. 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:41.600 But then a watcher and a holy one came and said to cut down the tree. 00:00:42.719 --> 00:00:44.640 But a stump was left. 00:00:44.960 --> 00:00:49.520 And so Nebuchadnezzar has called Daniel to give him an interpretation. 00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:52.240 And Daniel gives this interpretation. 00:00:54.160 --> 00:01:00.880 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decision of the Most High, which reaches on my Lord the King. 00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:24.320 And they shall drive you out from man, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field, and they shall make you to taste grass as oxen, and they shall tinge you from the dew of the heavens, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High has dominion in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he desires. 00:01:24.560 --> 00:01:30.480 And whereas they said to leave the stalk of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be steadfast for you. 00:01:30.719 --> 00:01:33.599 From this you shall know that the heavens have dominion. 00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:37.120 All this came on Nebuchadnezzar the king. 00:01:37.280 --> 00:01:42.079 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. 00:01:42.320 --> 00:01:55.040 The king answered and said, Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the strength of my security and for the glory of my honor? 00:05:25.679 --> 00:05:43.679 It is also apparent that someone who believes that everything he thinks and does originates from himself is no different from an animal, for he thinks only with his natural mind, which the human being has in common with animals, and not with his rational spiritual mind, which is the truly human mind. 00:05:44.239 --> 00:05:52.719 For the rational spiritual mind acknowledges that God alone thinks of himself, and that people think from God. 00:05:54.799 --> 00:05:56.159 Here end our lessons. 00:05:56.399 --> 00:05:59.599 Blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it. 00:05:59.919 --> 00:06:00.559 Amen. 00:06:03.199 --> 00:06:08.719 We just read a story about King Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:19.279 Now, at the time of the story, Babylon was the most powerful city and the most powerful empire in the world that the people knew. 00:06:20.239 --> 00:06:29.519 And as king of it, as far as he was concerned, Nebuchadnezzar was the most powerful person in the whole world. 00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:32.799 If he said to do something, it had to be done. 00:06:33.839 --> 00:06:37.119 And they had conquered the land of Judah at this time. 00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:43.679 And so people of the children of Israel, Shadrach and Meshach, and Abednego and Daniel had come to Babylon. 00:06:43.759 --> 00:06:45.599 They were captive in Babylon. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:49.119 And King Nebuchadnezzar knew that Daniel could interpret dreams. 00:06:49.279 --> 00:06:52.000 So King Nebuchadnezzar has this dream. 00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:55.199 It's a strange dream, and he doesn't know what to make of it. 00:06:55.519 --> 00:06:59.039 He dreams there's this big tree and it grows really tall. 00:06:59.599 --> 00:07:03.839 Birds come under it and they're fed by it, and animals take shelter under it. 00:07:03.919 --> 00:07:05.359 It's a wonderful tree. 00:07:05.679 --> 00:07:22.799 But then a holy one and a watcher come and he hears them saying that he will be cast out and eat uh grass like an oxen eats grass, and his uh nails will grow long like a bird's talons, and his hair will grow long like feathers. 00:07:22.959 --> 00:07:24.879 They don't say who they're talking about. 00:07:25.199 --> 00:07:31.199 And the tree will be chopped down, but a stump of it will remain. 00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:36.719 So, Nebuchadnezzar is confused, and he knows this means something. 00:07:36.799 --> 00:07:38.719 So he calls Daniel and says, Daniel, what does this mean? 00:07:38.799 --> 00:07:43.039 And Daniel tells him, Well, this is about you, this is gonna happen to you. 00:07:43.359 --> 00:08:01.039 You are gonna end up sort of uh not really knowing who you are or where you are, and you're gonna go out, you're gonna live outside, not in your beautiful palace, you're gonna be wet with the dew in the morning, your nails are gonna grow long, until you realize that everything you have is from the Lord. 00:08:02.559 --> 00:08:05.359 So, twelve months pass. 00:08:06.159 --> 00:08:08.639 And King Nebuchadnezzar is going out for a walk. 00:08:08.799 --> 00:08:16.959 He's looking around at Babylon, saying, Is not this great Babylon which I have built? 00:08:17.439 --> 00:08:20.399 Talking about, I am the best, I am the greatest. 00:08:20.559 --> 00:08:24.239 And instantly he hears this voice This is going to happen to you. 00:08:24.719 --> 00:08:46.159 And sure enough, he he goes out, and for uh seven times, it doesn't say how long these times are, but for some amount of time, he he doesn't live in a palace, he lives in the grass and he eats grass like an ox does, until he realizes even he, the most powerful king in the world, is nothing without the Lord. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:52.159 Everything he has is a gift from the Lord, could be taken away in an instant like that. 00:08:53.519 --> 00:08:55.519 So this story teaches us something. 00:08:55.679 --> 00:09:00.879 Throughout the Lord's Word, when we hear about Babylon, it's also it's actually the same word as the Tower of Babel. 00:09:01.519 --> 00:09:07.279 It's an image of people trying to make themselves the greatest, even greater than God. 00:09:07.439 --> 00:09:10.559 They want to rule over everything, they want to be worshipped. 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:18.720 And even if we're not like that, we do have something in us that wants to be the greatest at something. 00:09:18.879 --> 00:09:20.240 And this can start out as a good thing. 00:09:20.319 --> 00:09:22.079 Remember, in the dream, the tree was a good thing. 00:09:22.159 --> 00:09:23.039 It can start out good. 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:28.240 So imagine you really like playing basketball, and you realize, hey, I'm pretty good at this. 00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:42.319 And you enjoy playing with your friends, you can pass to them, you uh work well as a team, you are um scoring scoring a lot of points, and you realize this is this feels really good to be really good at this sport, and I can help my teammates and I can really make something good happen. 00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:47.759 Or maybe you like cooking, and you realize, hey, I can I actually have a pretty good knack for this. 00:09:47.839 --> 00:09:51.199 I'm starting to not just need to read a recipe, I can actually cook pretty well. 00:09:51.519 --> 00:09:54.720 I really like doing this, and people like the food I'm making for them. 00:09:54.799 --> 00:09:55.919 This is really good. 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:59.039 All that's a good thing. 00:09:59.519 --> 00:10:06.319 But what can happen is it can turn into saying, I'm gonna be the greatest. 00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:16.159 And instead of thinking I'm gonna use my basketball skills to help my teammates, or I'm gonna use my cooking skills to feed the people I care about, it's I'm gonna be the best basketball player ever. 00:10:16.720 --> 00:10:18.799 And everyone's gonna know it. 00:10:19.199 --> 00:10:24.240 I'm gonna be the best cook ever, and everyone's gonna tell me how great my food is. 00:10:24.959 --> 00:10:33.679 And that can become what drives us so we can shift from being driven by wanting to do what's good for others to just being the greatest myself. 00:10:35.120 --> 00:10:38.079 And that's what it means to not have the Lord build the house. 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:39.439 We're now focused on ourselves. 00:10:39.519 --> 00:10:41.360 We're not saying, what does the Lord want from me? 00:10:41.439 --> 00:10:43.759 We're like, what can I do to be the greatest? 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:48.480 We start maybe being selfish, we get upset, and then something happens that is devastating. 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:52.000 We we lose a game and we realize we're not as good as we thought we were. 00:10:52.319 --> 00:10:54.639 We get injured and we can't play anymore. 00:10:54.959 --> 00:10:58.000 Or someone doesn't like the food we cook for them. 00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:04.480 And if all we've cared about is being the greatest, that can be make us feel hopeless. 00:11:04.559 --> 00:11:13.519 If I'm not the greatest basketball player ever, and that's my only goal, then everything's hopeless once I realize that's not going to happen for me. 00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:17.919 But there is good news, because remember, in the dream, there's that stump that's left. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:21.039 There's still something good there, still something that can be worked with. 00:11:22.639 --> 00:11:34.480 Because we can take almost exactly the same actions, the hard work and practice, the trying to do as well as we can, but do it from the Lord, and that makes all the difference. 00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:45.839 The other story we read from the New Testament: there were some fishermen, and they'd been fishing all night, working really hard to fish, and they'd been casting their nets in and drawing them in, nothing all night long. 00:11:46.480 --> 00:11:52.799 Then the Lord comes into their boat and says, Go out into the deep and throw your nets in again. 00:11:53.519 --> 00:11:56.720 Exactly the same thing they've been doing all night long. 00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:00.480 But they say, Okay, we'll do it. 00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:04.959 And they go out and they do it, and they can't even bring in the fish they have. 00:12:06.079 --> 00:12:15.759 There's a world of difference between doing things on your own and doing things from the Lord, even if it seems like you're doing the same thing. 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:21.360 And in this particular case, what happened next tells us part of why this is the case. 00:12:21.519 --> 00:12:32.639 The fishermen come back and they don't say, Yes!
