On this week's episode, Jeff interviews staff members Braydon Pape and Joe House.
Welcome to this week's episode of Fields Notes, where we take a deeper dive into sermon text, discuss matters of life and faith, and enjoy conversations around the table with fellow friends from the Fields. Well, hey, hello, and welcome back to Fields Notes. It's been a uh, as the kids say, a minute. It's been a little while since we recorded a Field Notes podcast. Is that what the kids say? Honestly, it's probably not even cool anymore. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00It's like I feel like sometimes I feel like I still say it's been a minute since that was cool.
SPEAKER_01You're right. Uh we might need to restart this. I don't know. It's been a while since we started recording podcasts. Uh we kind of had a we started a summer series on our Fields Notes interviewing people of our staff mainly, getting to know us. We kind of took a somewhat summer break due to logistics. Also, we kind of plan to take a summer break in some ways too. Yeah. We're wrapping up the summer podcast series, doing another interview. If it were up to me, we probably would only be interviewing Braden, but through some subtle nudges from Jeff, perhaps. I don't know. I'm being interviewed as well. We're gonna get to know Braden and I a little bit because we're tons of fun, right, Braden? Absolutely. We're fun people to know. Um, I don't know if that's true or not. We're pretty fun. Braden's fun.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01We're um tons of fun. We do think it's valuable though that, especially people working for our church, that our church would know us um to a certain degree. This is maybe a helpful platform to do that. And so that's why we're doing these podcasts. So I think Jeff is gonna be is this right, Jeff? Jeff's gonna be asking some questions here. He might even have some questions. We don't know, we don't know what he's gonna ask in some ways. We know part, we know some general things he's gonna ask. Um, but our hope for you guys we always have the script.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you think you do.
SPEAKER_01Our hope is that this would be a uh a fun podcast where you guys get to know about Braden, Braden Pape and I. This is Joe House speaking. You guys get to know us. Joe House. Everybody knows. Apparently, we sound somewhat similar on this podcast. If you don't know us super well, every time before we answer, we'll just have to say our first and last name.
SPEAKER_02Yes, maybe even middle.
SPEAKER_01Pape, comma Braden speaking.
SPEAKER_00There you go. You guys do guys, I'm excited, and and I'm excited for a lot of reasons. But one, because I yeah, I do have the privilege of working with you guys and serving with you guys. And yeah, it's it's we have a lot of fun. And um, it's it really is one of the great joys in ministry is getting to serve alongside both of you. Uh, so I'm excited to hear your answers to these questions, to get to just enjoy that together. So let's start. Probably most basic. Hey, talk to us a little bit about where you're from, high school, college, family. Like just give us that kind of brief bio before we get into your kind of spiritual bio, if you will. Braden, we'll we'll kick it off with you.
SPEAKER_02Sounds great. Uh yeah, I am originally from Wisconsin, uh which everybody knows if you're if you know me. You're gonna be. It's a good place. You never had any cheese curds before. That's right. And Culver's uh especially. So those are important things in my life. Yeah, from Wisconsin, very southeastern, like Delavan, Lake Geneva, if you know those areas. Um, yep. I then uh grew up there my whole life. I have uh wonderful mom and dad, Craig and Deb, and I have three younger sisters, uh, and they're awesome. And then I have a great wife. Her name is Abby, you'll see her around. And we have two kids, Brooklyn and Jonah. And uh we Abby and I met at school at Cedarville University, and so we were in Ohio for a few years, and then we have moved out to Indiana for since college, really. We've been in Indiana in Crawfordsville first, and then now here at the fields in Westfield.
SPEAKER_00So well done. Joe, that's a that's a high bar for you to follow up. Yeah, I have to like think about where have I been? Where did I go to school? And who is in my family? Joe, take it away.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'm Joe. I'm from so I'm from Lafayette, Indiana, not too far away. Not West Lafayette. I'm from the real Lafayette. There you go. There you go. Um, I went to, if you know the Lafayette High School, so I went to Lafayette Jeff. Um, the mascot is the Broncos, but it's actually not spelled correctly. That's a little fun fact about Jeff. Do you know that, Braden? No, how's it spelled? Like Broncos normally spelled uh B-R-O-N-C-C-O-S. R has an H in it. The joke is that Branchos. Yeah, who knows?
SPEAKER_02Where it after the C?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. What? The H stands for heart, is what we say. I don't know. Anyways, that's another story from our day. Went to Jeff. Um yeah, from Lafayette, I'm the baby of my family. I'm the youngest of four. Babies of the families are always the best, is what they say. I don't know if that's true or not. Um yeah, love my family. So grateful for them. Uh yeah, so grouping Lafayette. I went to Wabash College, the all-male school in Crawfordsville, Indiana. A lot of Crawfordsville connections in our church. That's right. Um, yeah, thankful for my education there. Um, what are whatever questions? I see Brayden did better. You have more family. More family.
SPEAKER_00Now you have you have your own immediate family. I do have my own family.
SPEAKER_01So I'm married to my lovely, wonderful wife, Callie.
SPEAKER_00Um we've actually been interviewed this summer on the podcast.
SPEAKER_01Callie has. People probably know Cali better than me in a lot of ways. Uh I'm yeah, I'm Callie's husband.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You're getting to be Luke's dad. I'm yeah. That's how I know the kid with the white hair.
SPEAKER_01Um we have our son Luke. We love him very much, and uh, we're expecting uh Laney, our daughter, to be born here soon. Um, so we're very grateful. We've been married for just over five years. We um yeah, we have been with the fields in a sense from almost basically the start of uh the idea of the fields church. But we um yeah, I lived in Indianapolis for a couple years um before or after graduating college, before here. I've been a teacher. I think most people know that in our church. I taught math for five years before uh working for our church, but a couple years in Indianapolis, middle school math, three years at Westfield High School, teaching Algebra one. What a joy.
SPEAKER_00Favorite, favorite math class.
SPEAKER_01I did make our I recently I made our FSM students do some math problems at our last uh summer event. It was Carson's still a little upset about the math on drugs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's still mainly I think because he missed it, because it's actually in a movie that we watch a little big league, and he's still a little frustrated. Such a fun math problem.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, those are some general things.
SPEAKER_00Uh let's talk to both of you guys. Great job. Uh how did you become a Christian? Like what talk to us a little bit. And obviously, you've already given us a story, so you don't need to re-give us your entire life, but uh just particularly how the Lord saved you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can go first. You can, Braden. You got it. This is Braden. Uh just to be clear. Uh yeah, I um thankful. Grew up in a Christian home, Christian family, was taught about Christ at a very young age and really believe the Lord saved me uh at a at a young age of like six, uh, through some sort of church ministry like a wana. Yeah. Uh thankful for that. And um, and then talked to my mom about those things and saw the Lord just grow a desire for him uh young, uh really in middle school, even that took off a lot, and uh started reading my Bible and doing things that I would not normally uh think a middle school would do as I look back and just see the Lord working in that way. Big probably like uh way the Lord worked in my life was certainly through struggling with sexual sin and pornography in uh high school, uh going to a public school and definitely at that point in time thinking through what does it mean to be a Christian and struggle with sin and trying to understand like how do I struggle with sin? And and a lot of my understanding was very much like I should I should hide this because I need to be good and I and I want to not do this, I don't want to sin in this way. Uh, but I didn't know what to do with it except for try to work harder to get rid of it. And so uh eventually after kind of in some ways coming to a little bit of an end of myself, the Lord just reminded me of Romans 5.8, which is God demonstrates his own love for us in this, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. And uh that was just like a new wave of the gospel hitting my life and just seeing man, that that even in my sin is is not when I'm good, is when Christ loves me and gave himself for me. But even while knowing all of my sin and the depths of it and all those things, that that that's when Christ loved and gave himself for me. And so uh for me that was uh really just helpful in in even just beginning a journey of having God's grace really change me and transform me uh instead of my own efforts and just trying to work harder, uh, which didn't work. Yeah. And uh and so super thankful for uh that then season in my life into college, um, getting getting accountability around me, growing in the gospel and and understanding more deeply what it means to be in Christ and and how that changes and shapes us and transforms our lives. And so uh that that's really a lot of how the Lord saved me and then what what he then even used a lot of those uh trials to then even uh give me a passion for ministry and helping people to understand that gospel that we can very easily hear and then and then figure out what what does that mean for my life? And and so those things really played into even just a desire to help people uh with that gospel and think about man, what does this mean for me to walk in Christ and people who go to church and hear these things, but then how does that live when I when I sin or when I struggle or in the real things of life? And and so that was really uh kind of those two things kind of going together uh for me in my life. Super thankful for God's grace and his kindness to continue to me, uh to lead me to repentance and walk with me. So uh yeah, thankful for God's grace and saving me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's awesome, brother.
SPEAKER_01Praise the Lord. Thanks for sharing, Braden. Yeah, I'll I'll share too. You know, you can it's always tough to share your test. You can like I have the three-hour version, I have the one-minute version somewhere between maybe that. But uh uh I really became a Christian after I graduated college. So later that a lot of um more a lot of people have been saved young at young age. I've um yeah, became a Christian uh really in 2020 in the COVID season. But I can just like some details lead up to that. Um yeah, at a young age, we actually my family did not go to church, but we uh started going to church when I was in middle school and we faithfully attended and um I liked church, but I think I was um wasn't a um priority perhaps for me. I was like, oh I'm just a uh kind of a good kid, don't get in trouble that much, get good grades, play sports, do like that. And oh, going to church is a good thing too, and that um kind of would have somewhat been my high school in a in a sense.
SPEAKER_00But you definitely weren't Joe, like a you weren't like an atheist per se. Like you wouldn't have like you would have probably had some yeah, god's there's a God and Jesus, like you would have thought yourself a Christian at some level.
SPEAKER_01I I think I would have, yeah. And then, but just not a priority in my life of that of like uh but that's not that important. Kind of like I we wouldn't have just wouldn't have thought about it. I probably wouldn't have said that maybe, but um yeah, probably in priority in my life. Um yeah, and uh I'll get to maybe more, but like wouldn't have understood the gospel in when I was in high school of like well, kind of there's grace involved, but also I should probably be good, like yeah. Um yeah, um I lived a uh a pretty worldly college life the whole time. Maybe would have thought I was a um a Christian, but um looking back, really would not have lived a godly college life um in many ways. Um would have sporadically gone to churches, but really wasn't plugged into a church body. Um sporadically would have read my Bible, but um not some would have uh yeah. Um in a lot of ways, yeah, in some way uh like I would try this often of lived a half in life that really is a not in life that I was trying to have the world and Jesus in a sense of like I think I need to kind of be good in this, um, and really just not living it. Um uh throughout my life, like uh the Lord really has put such great examples in my life. So a couple people in college um who really were Christians, who stood out as Christians to me, that I was like, there's something about them that I like, but I I don't quite know in that. And even a um a good friend who I'm still in touch with who I grew uh after I graduated college, and I was like, at the time, I was like, oh man, this guy's like a big time mega. I'm just like a normal Christian. He's like a big time mega Christian. In reality, I just wasn't, and he was. It's really the reality of that. And um, but the Lord used him in so many ways. Um, really, I was even in this um, yeah, I think I'm gonna show this too. I was even this kind of in this half-end season, even when I met Callie in some ways. And I don't even think I was trying to fake my Christianity with her, but I think in some ways, like, oh, it's kind of just, you know, I just had a um, I'm not explaining this very well in this, but uh I think a lot of people though, like I I know it's a tough thing to explain, but I feel like a lot of people just resonate with that.
SPEAKER_00Like I'm I imagine a lot of people are like, yeah, we know what you mean, man. Like we get this sort of like, yeah, you know, Christianity, like I, but not once you're when you probably were safe, like you could just go, oh whatever it was before, that wasn't it. Like I wasn't a Christian then. I don't know what that was, but I know now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right? Yep, yeah. In many ways. Um, but uh yeah, uh so kind. I started dating in um not that long after that with the COVID shutdown happened. Um, and the the Lord really used that season in big ways in my life that I had an abundance of time to be in God's word. Um, I was around other Christians. Um, so a lot of that time I uh spent at Callie's parents' basement and they let me stay with them. Um, but then um attending in whatever way we could, Rock Point Church, a really solid gospel preaching church. Um uh Callie's dad has the little Greg Gilbert's book, What is the gospel? Um, around other people, like uh understanding, oh my goodness, I actually am a sinner and I need I I don't just need to get a little bit better at what it means to be a Christian. I actually need Jesus to take my sin, to pay the penalty for my sin, and that and that's what he's done for me on the cross. Like that I would have maybe known bits and pieces of I couldn't probably piece together in that the idea of like repentance, of turning over my sin, turning to Christ, trusting in him, resting in him would have been just vague things in my life. Um, and I think even too, just uh idols in my heart getting pulled up and uh recognizing so and I don't know exactly it sometime in this COVID season, I I do think I became a Christian. Honestly, just so Jeff I we talked about the sum, but Jeff preached a sermon at Rock Point of how we wrongly build our lives on things that are actually uh are not capable of carrying our burdens, and we actually are crushing those things. We keep on putting weight onto most of the time a relationship or maybe kids or maybe a job or some sort of false God that we're putting such weights, burdens that we expect them to be our whole source of joy, our whole source of life, and we're crushing this person or this thing. And I'm uh and I'm sitting there, I'm like, man, I'm kind of building my life on Cali in a sense. And and and and your but your call was, well, we need to build our lives on Jesus, that he actually is the one who's who's gonna carry our burdens, and he actually is strong enough to do so. Um, somehow in in that season, I think the Lord saved me. And I um realized, oh, I actually I need Jesus. And um uh, you know, always messy. I think I wouldn't have told you that I wouldn't have told you, oh, I became a Christian then. Yeah, it was then months l-month later that I was like, wait a minute, I wasn't a Christian before, and now I am, and that it took some time to discern and even an excitement about ministry I had in that season. I think in some ways I just became a Christian is what it really was. I was like, oh, I'm excited, and um uh thankful to get to serve now. Oh, I'm gonna listen back to this and be like, I'd probably explain this poorly in ways.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So and as someone who got to walk with you through a decent amount of that, just super encouraged to see that too. And I think a lot of us could say, you know, man, yeah, yeah, we see what the world is.
SPEAKER_01I remember I was sitting at a picnic table with you and Doug King, yeah, and uh we were talking about baptism. And we're talking about like, oh yeah, like when you you become like we are Baptist church, we when you get saved, then you get baptized. And I was like, wait a minute, I probably need to get baptized. I got baptized at Castleview then and um super thankful for that. And it's really sweet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's awesome, man. Uh, what do you guys do here at the Fields Church? Brayden. Uh a lot of things.
SPEAKER_02Uh anything that Jeff asked me to do. That's why I often say whatever Jeff needs me to do. Uh yeah. I I'm the associate pastor, which means that I primarily give oversight in areas such as discipleship. So, like our growth groups, um, our classes, um, also missions. Yep. And then I preach typically the next most after Jeff, um, get the opportunity to do that, and then have a lot of opportunities to just uh meet with and spend time with members, um, incoming members, doing membership interviews, things like that, and then also obviously uh getting to know and spend time with our members and shepherd them. So all sorts of other things, but those are the main areas. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh Braden real, I mean, is the we just have two staff pastors. We have two lay elders, lay pastors, but two guys on staff, uh Braden and I. And so, yeah, in some ways, it is true. Whatever I don't do, you do, whatever you don't do, I do. You know, we do together, those things like that. So yeah. And then there's Joe, who also does a lot of things in a similar vein.
SPEAKER_01What do I do? Yep, yeah. Well, my title's pastoral assistant. I think that means a lot of different things at a lot of different churches use that title. Um, I don't know. I often like follow that up with a pastor training role of sorts, yep. Um, while also doing things too. But I'm uh uh, I mean, technically a full-time seminary student too at Indianapolis Theological Seminary. Lord willing, I'll be done at the end of January. Who knows?
SPEAKER_00Celebrations that will come. A big smile as you say that.
SPEAKER_01Um so thankful to get to go to school there, though. Um, it's been a huge blessing for me. Um, and also hard, but like that's how a lot of life is a lot of times.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and then yeah, main area. I think people know I mainly serve in leading student ministry, um, young adult ministry. Um I think those are maybe more formal ways. Service leading, everyone's while getting to preach. Other just I don't know, then there's just a lot of random things that come up, sending sort of emails, organize a couple things. There's always just little things. That's just kind of all sorts of jobs in that. But uh, and then I think in a sense, learning too. I sit in the elders' meetings. Yeah, sometimes you guys let me talk though, too. I'm thankful to get to talk. I'm probably not supposed to talk. I don't know, but I get to talk sometimes, but very happy for you and to share your wisdom. Yeah, that's kind of my job.
SPEAKER_00I do feel like we have a staff, a little bit of the everybody does a little bit of everything, you know, in some ways too. Like we all have kind of major roles, but but have kind of specific things that we do, or just you know, everybody kind of jumps in and shares with. So um, guys, that's great. I mean, we and I our church is so thankful to have both of you guys serving. I particularly, as you know, because in some sense, I mean, Joe's been here from the beginning, but wasn't on staff with us until after a year. Um, obviously. Two years. Two years. Was it two full years? Yeah. And then Braden has just been on staff for a year. Um, and so it's one of those where you're like, oh man, like it's like honestly, it's hard for me to remember what it was like before you guys. Um, the Lord's just been so kind, both you and the rest of our staff, who's amazing as well. It's time to have some fun. Not that the rest of the the previous wasn't fun. Now we get to just ask more fun, more. You're more excited about these questions. No, no, no. I was really excited about those. I knew the previous ones. These is where I start to get out of my knowledge a little bit. So uh if we show up at a coffee shop, what what are you guys getting?
SPEAKER_02I'm I'm for sure getting a pour over. Okay. Most likely Ethiopian. Okay. But yeah, definitely pour over.
SPEAKER_00Ethiopian would be the region where the coffee is registered. Just for people that maybe aren't that fancy.
SPEAKER_02I have no idea what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_00Because Joe, would you have known with an Ethiopian coffee? I mean, I know that coffee comes from a lot of places. I know where Ethiopia is.
SPEAKER_01I can put it together. I'm not surprised to hear that.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't matter to me as much. Do you have a we know that you're not the uh the coffee snob by any means. I'm not the coffee shop. Do you have a coffee shop order?
SPEAKER_01Um, you know, um a lot of times, especially if I'm just meeting someone, almost always I'll get a black coffee. But that's just because I I like black coffee, it's good. But I will also get like a uh a hot vanilla latte. I like a lot. Um mocha's are good too. But I just don't get those as often. Yeah, those kind of like, oh, for celebrating, I'll get a vanilla latte. We're on vacation, we're getting vanilla lattes, something like that.
SPEAKER_00Well, if we're going to a coffee shop, which coffee shop are you going if you've got a choice? And what's put, I give you one that is like we all could go to. And then if there's one that you're like, this coffee shop in this location is like the best thing I've ever been to. Maybe that's locally. But yeah, tell us if you got a favorite local coffee shop. But if you also have one that we need to visit outside uh this Indiana region, that that's that's fair game too.
SPEAKER_02I want Braden to go first. Yeah, it sounds good. In this region, I would go indie coffee roasters. Okay, probably north end. I really like the north end location a lot. I like a lot of seating, just a nice, nice spot, super fun. So I like meeting people there. It's great. Awesome. Um probably further out, I can't that I can't think of a ton of other ones, but one of my favorites that uh my friend uh nickname that I always just call him is Gags. Uh and uh me and him became regulars at this coffee shop called Ghost Like Coffee in near Dayton, Ohio. We're in college at college and super great coffee shop, really good coffee. So if you're ever around there, okay.
SPEAKER_00Better than indie coffee roasters?
SPEAKER_02It's been so long that I don't know, but it's probably close. It's at that safe. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Joe. I know it's tough. Uh yeah, I I like a lot of coffee shops. Some of the is value. I think the having some like space in them. So like some coffee shops are like a lot, but they're like right next to some other people is kind of tough in that. Um I do like the both indie coffee roasters are great. Tough thing about those is you have to very be very clear about which one you're meeting at. Yeah, they're both on the north side of Carmel.
SPEAKER_00You're almost guaranteed that the other person's at the other one where you're beating.
SPEAKER_01Callie and I went recently, which was really we've only been once, and so I think it's the right name. Is it Provider or Providence or It's Provider. Provider. Uh I'm thinking of what it's on City Row 38. It's actually what Grace It's what Grace said in the podcast, but I went provision? Maybe. Oh man, now I'm embarrassed because I said it as like I know which one you're talking about, though. It was really good. It was really it was good and sweet. Cool environment, I think. Cool places to sit and it was good.
SPEAKER_00I think one of Steph's friends from Indiana Wesling actually like runs runs, owns it. Oh wee.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm I'm pretty easily happy in the coffee department. Like if we went to Starbucks, I'd be fine with that. Like I've I'm very fine with that.
SPEAKER_00Neither one of you mentioned Rivet, but it's okay. I won't. I like I like Rivet too. Love Rivet. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Space going back to his. Yes. Now that's a different vibe for sure.
SPEAKER_00I think that's the coolest shopping round. Uh, but it's not about me. It's not about me. Maybe a little bit about me. Least favorite food. Least favorite food.
SPEAKER_01Can I can I go? Am I allowed to go first? I really my my my wife and her family love the um uh a cocktail sauce, like the was it the St. Elmo's cocktail sauce that has the horseradish sauce in it. The horseradish I would put in my least favorite food. It just doesn't seem fun at all. They're all if they listen to this, they are gonna roast me. But they all love it. And I'm just like, nah, I'll just give me some ketchup or something. I don't know. Yeah, definitely with you. That sounds awful. Thank you guys.
SPEAKER_00Uh, real quick sub question. We've favorite candy. Least favorite candy. But does Brady need to go in his least favorite food first?
SPEAKER_01Worst candy. For me? Yeah. Uh what's the worst candy? I'm thinking like maybe something that like sticks to my teeth a lot. I don't know. We'll give you still the time. Least favorite food.
SPEAKER_02Answers for both these vegetables is the worst food. Amen. Uh, just the category. Pretty much there's a there's a number of vegetables that now in my much older age, uh, I've I'm okay to eat, and it's all right. They're pretty decent. But there's a number of them that you just lump the whole category, and I'm not I'm not gonna get into specifics. That's great. Vegetables great, agreed. Candy, bit of honey is the worst. Really? Oh, you use that as a sermon illustration, I think. At rock point. I remember that. If anyone listens to this, they're gonna know. Okay. I I just think it's the most average, dumb candy ever. Yeah. And it probably sticks to your teeth, too. It does. I think I think Joe would be with me on this.
SPEAKER_01It's kind of worthless. I can't really think. You know, I think I'm always a little bit sad whenever you get some whoppers in like a Christmas or Easter like candy thing. Whoppers are really stale. Whoppers I just don't love either. Um I don't know, but they're not, I don't know. Um they're fine. Yeah, all right.
SPEAKER_00These gotta be a little more rapid fire here. Book of the Bible that you'd most want to teach or preach or least want to teach. And can I go?
SPEAKER_01I'm taking a class through like the Old Testament, but Job would be we we need to preach Job. And it'd be tough, it'd be interesting to do, but there's like Joe.
SPEAKER_00If you want to take the mantle preaching Job out of preaching Isaiah in Revelation, I'm not touching Job for a while.
SPEAKER_01I know that's a lot of repetitive when he's the the dialogue between the counselors and job is a lot. Job is awesome. Job is an awesome book. There's so like it, especially the start and the end. Okay. We we need to do job. Okay. Okay. All right. Well, I don't know. But also, that might be because I just studied it a bunch for like four days in a row. What do you not need to do? Which part of the which book of the Bible do you not like? I think you answered proverbs because Proverbs would be tough because you have so many, you know, one-line proverbs. How do you piece that together? Uh, you know, I don't want to. That's a tough. That's tough. I think I would just probably say Proverbs without thinking very much in that.
SPEAKER_00That's that's that's okay. We'll we'll accept that answer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um most and least. Yeah, I think so. Least, I feel like I'd say, I mean, Job would be kind of close. Would be at least. Honestly, I think that would be a good thing. You have to do some big chunks in there. You can you could slow down at the start, big chunks in the middle, yeah, slow down at the end. So that would be a tough one. I I think another book that would be similar would be like uh like a first and second chronicles would probably be on the low end. That would be tough. For me, just a lot of the you know, yeah, especially when Kings and others are kind of similar. So that those would be some some ones that would be on the lower end. Top end, man, there's so many good books that I feel like I would want to preach. But this is how I'm excited to figure out my preaching. Well, I'm excited, maybe sneak peek for Jonah.
SPEAKER_00That is, I think that's a reveal.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, via the fact that uh that's our son's name. Yeah, uh, I think Jonah's an awesome book. Okay, and we may or may not be preaching that.
SPEAKER_00Are you gonna be fighting for a few more of those sermons? Oh, yeah. Okay, all right. Well, we'll give you a few more in Jonah. See what happens. Guys, Jonah is probably coming in January. That's what it seems like at the Fields Church. Uh, favorite sport?
SPEAKER_01Favorite sport. Uh, for really in the course of my life, baseball is my favorite sport. I played baseball forever that I really got maybe a little bit burnout on it. So maybe to watch now is football, but baseball really is my answer to that. That's the right answer. Basketball. It's an okay answer.
SPEAKER_00No, we're an Indian. Come on, that's a great answer. That is a great answer. I agree. Uh, both of those are great. Uh let's do favorite fiction book. I need a favorite novel fiction book. You know, have you read a fiction book? We're both in the category of. Both of these guys just went like, I don't have anything in this. What is a fiction book? We're gonna pivot. Uh we're gonna go to favorite, apparently non-fiction book. Um, that we should you know, what's a book that you'd recommend to people uh in this you know, you should be like, oh, you should read this. This is really good. I read Christian and non-Christian both accept it.
SPEAKER_01I say this many times, but um Michael Lawrence's uh this has been my answer, I think, three or four times to your favorite book, the conversion book. So if you do those little nine book marks series, it actually was helpful, even thinking about my testimony, helped for for me to give some language to the new life that I had in Christ. And uh very helpful, easy to read. Um that'd be one I put in there. I think also Impossible Christianity by Kevin Deoung. Rarely do I laugh out loud reading an introduction to a book, and it's also super helpful in theological ways. We had that as a staff. I think we did. Yep.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh stink, I mean, conversion, the yellow book, and that little nine mark series. But I that is a that is gold. It's so good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I would say, I mean, kind of classic answer, but I this book I've returned to multiple times, Gentle and Lowly by Dan Orland. So good. Yeah, super helpful for me. Yeah, just knowing the heart of Christ. So thankful for that.
SPEAKER_00I think it came out with a smaller version called The Heart of Christ. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kind of just doing it for him right there. So that one, I I think um Rejoicing in Christ is a really good book by Michael Reeves, also that I just read. So, or not that long ago, a little bit a while ago.
SPEAKER_00But yeah. When you taught on the doctrine of Christ, is that's right.
SPEAKER_02That's that's I read that just before then.
SPEAKER_00Love it. Uh, favorite time of year?
SPEAKER_01Fall. It's coming up soon. That's so good. I can't wait, man. Hooded sweatshirt. I think I also like fall time, but I like a lot of the times of the year. Uh for Joe, he wears a hood and sweatshirt. Yeah, he's wearing the same thing almost all the time. I'm wearing a sweatshirt.
SPEAKER_00He is wearing what I would wear this fall right now in a pretty warm room in the middle of the day.
SPEAKER_01This little room gets warm. Are the office as a whole? If you turn the AC on, it gets a little chilly. I like to have a sweatshirt. Don't need a sweatshirt.
SPEAKER_00Been fine in my polo and t-shirt. I'm wearing a t-shirt. We've been great. Um uh biggest. No, no, let's go to go-to snack. What's your go-to snack? What are we snacking on in the afternoon?
SPEAKER_02Oh, in the afternoon? Yeah, that's that's that's probably a big, yeah, that's probably a key difference. Yeah, let's go for an afternoon snack.
SPEAKER_01Afternoon snack. I would say historically for me, the snack that I would be most would be go to think about is just granola bars. Just yeah, they're so easy, they're good. I used to dip them in peanut butter.
SPEAKER_02It's good.
SPEAKER_00Oh man, nice call on that.
SPEAKER_02So Abby and I have a little bit of a you know different understanding of snack. She thinks a snack is kind of like a particular kind of thing that you're supposed to have that that wouldn't be a dessert. I lump all desserts into snacks.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02So when I think snack, the first thing that's coming to mind is all sorts of desserts. So I'm like, what dessert am I eating?
SPEAKER_00So just for people who don't let me be clear and to help you out. Your wife's right that that's not a snack. No, we'll let you go ahead and answer the way that you can see. I'm gonna answer the way I'm gonna answer.
SPEAKER_02Which is which is gonna be basically what my favorite food would be is like cookies. So I would I would eat cookies pretty much any time of the day.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna tell Abby that she was, but now when you said cookie, I'm like, I'm gonna say that's the best snack to have it. Which is why our anniversary is gonna be a cookie bake-off. That's right. Guys, is there anything that we as a church that you haven't said yet or answered, you're like, oh man, they should know this about me. What's what's something, a last little thing that you're like, I bet you the church doesn't know this. And they would be maybe a little surprised to know it. What what anything that comes to mind in that area? What's what's something? Joe, you got something? We can only have dead air for so long. We can have a lot of dead air, I think. I don't know. I don't think in a podcast that works that way.
SPEAKER_02Just put it on two times speed.
SPEAKER_00It'll be fine. It'll be a lot less time, you know. It'll be okay. I could play some Jeopardy theme song or something in here.
SPEAKER_02That's right. Uh man, I I feel like there's a lot of random things that I could think of about how like something that people wouldn't know about me. Just give me just so we're just trying to close this thing up with uh with a good thing that maybe somebody didn't know. That I like. Probably, I mean, I I just think of probably the first thing, couple two things about me. Running, really like running. Yeah, that's fun. Yep. Uh there's started a little run club. We have a little run club. So if you want to come out and run, let's talk to me. It'd be fun. Don't talk to me. Uh not Jeff. Um Joe.
SPEAKER_00Have you been to the running club?
SPEAKER_02I have not been to the running club.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_02Not there. Uh boy Joe. And then uh, I really like cities. Like, I think that's just a cool like I would love to visit almost any city in the world. I just think they're so interesting and unique. So, like, I'm thankful that we live closer to a city now in Indianapolis and that sort of thing.
SPEAKER_01Real quick.
SPEAKER_02That I've ever visited. Man, there's so many good ones. Just a good city that maybe you can recommend. Two cities that come to mind first are like Denver. Yeah. And then Seattle. Oh, that's great.
SPEAKER_00Those are two, both on my list. Okay, Joe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know. I don't I haven't I it's tough for me to answer this. I think some of you wouldn't know about me, maybe that I think would be a fun thing to do. I think it'd be really fun to like build a log cabin with with some guys. It would be like that would just be.
SPEAKER_00Joe, are you an outdoorsman?
SPEAKER_01No, I'm not.
SPEAKER_00But like I was a little bit surprised, but like if you want to build logs, do you kind of think it's gonna be like Lincoln logs?
SPEAKER_01Um no, I and it would take a while, it'd be it'd be a tough thing to do, but I think that would just it just sounds so fun to do something.
SPEAKER_00You need to watch. There's there's actually a dude perfect where they built a do they? Yeah, you need to watch it. You could get to see it. It looked really, really difficult. I'm sure it is, but it sounds so fun to me.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Well, if there's anybody listening that would like to build a log cabin, maybe if we could get some land for the church, we build a little log cabin on it. There we go. And Joe's ready to go. It's a good it's a good spot to start, yeah. Guys, I I think probably that people can understand a little bit of why it you guys are just very fun uh to work with and um yeah, having a lot of fun. It was good to just kind of figure out a little bit more about you guys, really, especially to hear your testimonies and to think about how the Lord has worked in your life and saved you, and uh just really thankful for that and how both of you serve at the church. So I guess do I need to do the outro? You do need to.
SPEAKER_01It's so hard to do the outro. I never know what to say in the intro.
SPEAKER_00No, it's really not. Fields, we love you guys, and it is a joy to serve in ministry at this church. It's a joy, especially for me, to serve with these two guys. We hope you have a great week. Great outro.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll just record that, put that on there every time every time. See you, Fields notes.
