Cover to Cover: Biblical Theology
Welcome to this episode of Fields Notes, our Fields Church podcast, where we get to talk more about our church, think about difficult questions, and discuss how we live the Christian life together. Our prayer is that this time would encourage us to treasure Christ more and have a deeper love for his people. Well, Fields Notes listeners, welcome back. If you're following along on the episode tags of our episodes, this is the start of season three of Fields Notes. Why do we have seasons? That's just what you do, I guess. So we have season three, episode one. I'm here today with none other than Jeffrey Strickland, Jefferson Strickland, just Jeff Strickland, and Brayden Perry. My friends. You don't really have there's no other way to go. Bray Doni Bray. Yeah. Anyways.
SPEAKER_01Did you have a nickname in high school? It was mostly related to like my last name.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Say everybody call me Strick in high school. Anyways, we're here talking today about something that is uh, I think by the time this releases will have already begun, but something coming up in our church, we actually have a new round of classes coming up this fall for our church, which I think people maybe vaguely know about in our church, but not some people might know very well, some people might not. This might be brand new information to you that we do some classes at the Fields Church. We are in school session in some sort of sense for the Fields Church in that um, which Brayton has kind of headed up since his time of being here. And uh, we want to talk a little bit about that, partly for um for us to know what's going on in our church, uh, partly a little bit of a um encouragement for you listening to consider coming to one of or more of uh these classes, uh, and just for us to even think about the topics that we're gonna talk about in these classes. I'm excited for it. I think it's gonna be help to us listening. So we're talking about our classes coming up at the Fields Church, which I do believe the official title, Braden correct me, are the foundations classes. Is that what we're calling them?
SPEAKER_00Foundations classes. Thinking about that, these are gonna help us with the foundations of our faith. Help us understand those, learn those, grow in applying and living those, all sorts of things like that.
SPEAKER_01So these would be classes that would sort of be like, hey, these are things that are really helpful to know if you're a Christian, are going to live the Christian life, uh, things like that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And we've got three classes coming up this fall. The first of which is a class on worship, which I think you came up with the title, Braden, is titled From Sunday to Monday. Is that right? Yeah, I actually don't even remember, but yeah. Somehow we have that. I'll take credit. We only worship on Sunday to then Monday in that. I was like Yep, just between those two.
SPEAKER_01There is a confusing way to understand that where you think of just Sunday to Monday, but your point is taking what we do on Sunday morning into our weeks on Monday. There it is.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Well, that's the first class coming up. It is gonna be on Thursdays here, uh, kind of at the end of August, but into September. Braden, you want to tell us a little bit about this first class on worship? Uh, maybe you don't have to you don't have to teach the class to us, but who is teaching it and what should we expect from this class?
SPEAKER_01Braden, I assume that you're gonna get out your guitar and it's gonna be about Braden does play guitar. I know everybody does except for me in this group.
SPEAKER_02I think you play a little guitar too, don't you? I've seen your guitar in your office. I have a guitar.
SPEAKER_01Jeff can strumble. I don't know if you can do a little strumming technically say I play guitar at all. I think I speak more Spanish than I play guitar, so and I don't speak Spanish well.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Bilingual over there. Braden, get into your uh start class. Uh, if you're listening to this, maybe right now, and uh you've already passed the first week of class, please come. We'd love to have you come, even if you're jumping into week two of from Sunday to Monday, thinking about theology of worship. Uh, Jim and myself are gonna be teaching. So we're each gonna teach two weeks of that four-week class. Um, and we're gonna be uh kind of yeah, exploring a little bit of in some ways, worship can just be kind of like a little bit of a nebulous term, kind of something that we throw out there. And probably what first comes into our mind when we think about that is uh singing. We think just like what Jeff just said, that I'm gonna get out my guitar and that's what I'm gonna do, and we're just gonna sing together, which you know, who knows? Maybe come and you'll you'll be surprised. We'll find out. But uh really uh worship has much more all-encompassing all of life than that. And so we're gonna talk about uh what it is, what do we mean when we're talking about worship? And then we're gonna maybe specifically look at some areas of life where we're where we especially are worshiping or where God calls us to worship. So we're gonna think about corporate worship, about our Sunday gatherings for one of our classes. We're gonna think about family worship, how do you lead your family in worship? And then we're gonna think about how does how does all of my life, uh, especially thinking about Romans 12, 12, 1 and 2, they're presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice. Like, how do we live all of life as worship to God? So those will be kind of some of the topics that we'll cover in our class uh during uh these first upcoming weeks. Sounds like it's gonna be pretty practical. Yeah, we hope.
SPEAKER_01There's a lot of really just helpful, like down to earth, like what does this look like in the home, at work, in the car, you know, like things like that. Yeah, that's super exciting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's our hope for all these classes, is especially that we don't want to just have them be class like class, like you learn math or you learn science, and it's like something that's you know good to know, helpful that I understand how to multiply things, but maybe not gonna always use that. Maybe sorry, Joe. Uh but math teacher and me. We're always doing math, but um, but we we really do want to, even in the midst of these classes, which are yes, we want to think with our minds, also then apply with our hearts and lives. Like, how do we do, how do we live this out? How do how does this gonna affect our Christian lives? Uh, we do want to do that, uh, and then especially be able to do that in community together uh with other brothers and sisters from the fields.
SPEAKER_02Awesome.
SPEAKER_00That's great.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's our first class coming up, a class on worship. Uh, the second class this fall, uh, gonna be mainly in October and November, Jeff is teaching and it's a class on Calvinism. Jeff, do you want to talk a little bit about is your title what is Calvinism? Is that right? I think it's what is Calvinism Really? What is Calvinism really? Yeah. Do you want to share a little bit, Jeff? What is Calvinism really? Or do you want to, yeah, tell us a little bit of all you want to tell? Everyone's asking. It's the question. You'll probably end up saying come to the class.
SPEAKER_01But uh, that is. I mean, I think that's part in part the idea. I mean, one of the things that I love to teach is uh theology and and really diving into what does this Bible say about uh certain topics? And really, when you're talking about Calvinism and the way that we'll look at it is what does the Bible say about salvation? And particularly how is it that God saves us and uh and his sovereignty in salvation? Um, and so that's what we're gonna look at. And I think one of the things I love about these classes, in one sense, I wouldn't do this on a Sunday morning. Uh, most Sundays when we gather, we're preaching directly from the text and we're preaching uh a passage uh or preaching a book of the Bible in order. And so for me, I'm like, oh, I don't think I'd ever do a sermon series. I mean, I I could, but I probably wouldn't do a sermon series uh on Calvinism or something like that. It just I think there's just better ways for us to spend our time on Sunday mornings as far as what we do uh in our Sunday morning gatherings. But a class is a really great opportunity to really learn um about a topic or a subject uh like this. And I think there's a lot of people, I'm our church uh is unashamedly, um, we believe in a big God, um, a God who is all powerful, a God who is in control, a God who is sovereign, who is king. Um, and I think there are a lot of questions on if God is king, if he is really sovereign, then what does that mean for salvation? And and what does that mean on how I think about myself and my own free will and freedom and all these sorts of questions? I mean, a lot of questions come up in this area of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility or freedom. And I would love to, this class is sort of an opportunity for us to say, well, what what really does Calvinism, uh, which a lot of people understand as those five points uh that often people will hear in kind of the isn't it, it's not an isn't an acronym? Um, that's TULA. Yeah, I think it's an acronym, I think it's the right word. Uh, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, perseverance of the saints. And that's what we're gonna walk through in five classes, is those five doctrines. And I think it'll be really helpful for people just to see, oh, okay, that's what actually is meant by these things. That's what's being taught. I've I've said this many times. Like the point of this class is not necessarily to convince everyone of Calvinism. Um, I and honestly, in some ways, I don't really care about Calvinism. I care about what the Bible teaches. Um, and the and this is really a class for us to try to understand well uh what the Bible teaches about a really important topic of our salvation. So that's what we're gonna be digging into.
SPEAKER_02Sounds great. I think I mean I think it'd be really helpful. I think uh myself included, but a lot of us when we come across Calvinism, reformed theology, we can very easily misunderstand things. You've been huge help to me, Jeff, in just explaining some of the complexities. And it's very complex in that. So I think it'll be a huge help to um a lot of us, just even understanding, in a sense, your title. What is Calvinism really? Yeah. Um so that'll be great. That's gonna be in October and November and on Mondays, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think there's just a lot of misunderstandings. And so that's really the the hope is just to correct those misunderstandings. And uh, I think it'll be a great class. I'm really excited. Bring your questions. Um, and this will be a these are classes, are opportunities for you to ask questions that you've maybe always wanted to ask, but never knew who to ask, or maybe didn't even feel really free to ask. Man, this is what we want to dig into um as a church. That's what it means. If you can't learn about who God is and what God has done and about the Bible at church, along with brothers and sisters in Christ, well, where are you gonna learn? Um, so we want to do this in community with one another. So I'm excited about it.
SPEAKER_00Sounds good. I remember asking you about, are you sure you want to do this class? And uh it's just yeah, good. Even thinking about, yeah, well, we want to be able to help people think through things that they might find difficult or just misunderstand, helping people just understand things like that and and have a space where they can ask questions like that, which I think is really good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think one of the things that I've always wanted to do a little bit of is just I feel like Calvinism almost is like politics. Like it's just certain things you're like, oh, I don't think we're supposed to talk about that, or I don't think we can dig into that. And I was just like, why not? Like, why shouldn't we? Like, let's dig in as a church with people we know and trust and uh alongside brothers and sisters in Christ that we love. And so yeah, that's the idea behind this. It really isn't like uh I am, I mean, probably even with the title a little bit trying to get your interest, like for sure. A little punchy, yeah. Yeah, a little punchy. Um, but I think it's I think it's a really important thing to consider.
SPEAKER_02Well, we're looking forward to that class, Jeff. The third class we have this fall in the the later fall, uh, is a class on what's called biblical theology. And I do believe the fun name for this class is cover to cover. Am I right, Braden? That's right. Um name. Braden, tell us a little bit about this. This is gonna be in MRI, Braden, the end of November and then even into December, right? Maybe most of December.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, most of November. I think maybe just the last one will be the first day or two of December or something like that. So um, yeah, number, another class on Thursdays. Um, looking forward to that. It'll be kind of, yeah, looking at interrupt us for a second too.
SPEAKER_02Just real quick. All these classes are gonna be at our Fields Church office, the garage, which we have here, which we're recording at here. Now, if you're wondering, also the recording studio, yeah. Uh-huh. It's a big functions in many ways. It's a multi-functional space we have here, which we're trying to make the most of. That's where these classes are gonna be at. There's more details, I'm sure you can find on our website of how to get here and those sorts of things.
SPEAKER_00But that's where these classes will be at. And you can actually sign up for any and all of these right now. They're all on the website. So go do that. That's the shameless plug.
SPEAKER_01I will say too, every once in a while, um, you know, we do have somewhat limited space. We move a lot of space at the garage, but we had a couple classes that you've gotten put on a wait list. I mean, they they've gotten that big. Um, so yeah, if you're gonna sign up, sign up quick and and dig in. You've earned it limited atonement.
SPEAKER_02Is that you're referring to Jeff?
SPEAKER_01That's right. It's no. I think it honestly, you'll add it. I regret saying that, right? It's it's the dad joke of theology. We're we're actually gonna talk about that even a little bit different.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, oh, good. Particular redemption.
SPEAKER_01Oh there we go.
SPEAKER_02I'm so sorry, Braden. I cut you off. Oh, that's great. You were talking about your the the this is the third class of the of the semester. Yep. Biblical theology, kind of November into December. Tell us a little bit. So, first off, biblical theology is a word I was like, okay, I think a lot of us know those words. I know the word biblical, I know the word theology. Some people even use them uh when they use those words together, use biblical theology differently. Tell us a little about what do you mean when you say the word biblical theology? Um, and then what's this class going to then talk about because of that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I think I think normally the way that the term is used is coming to the Bible a little bit on its own terms, and then tracing theology through the Bible. So, so finding a theme or some sort of thing that the Bible is talking about, and then looking at it through and over the course of the storyline of scripture. Uh in comparison to a little bit of systematic theology. Obviously, they're not completely divorced from one another, but systematic is more like let's take a topic and pick it and then see where the Bible talks about that thing. So that's maybe the difference between them. So in the idea of cover to cover, biblical theology is in some ways tracing themes through the Bible, uh, helping us understand. In some ways, it helps put the Bible together, I think. And I think that's really helpful when we are reading our Bibles and we're trying to figure out what in the world is happening here in Numbers and what am I supposed to do with that today on my Wednesday, uh, as I just read this. Um, so I I think in some ways this helps us to be able to put the Bible together, to see themes, to think about Christ. Um, and and so biblical theology is just really helpful in that so that you can read the Bible from cover to cover and be able to trace Christ and also how this might apply to your life, and not just be like, okay, well, you know, maybe I'm supposed to live more like this person in the Bible, but be able to really get out of it, I think, the meaning of the text and also understand then more how that uh especially leads us to the gospel and our need for Christ through those things and and tracing things like themes, um, yeah, other kind of things along those lines uh help us to uh read the Bible really in that way. So that's what I'm excited to get to talk about. It's uh it's one thing that I uh love getting to share and help people with is how to read their Bibles, especially the parts that we're less inclined to read. Um so I'm excited that we can kind of do that together.
SPEAKER_01I think sometimes when people think about biblical theology, a a helpful word is the story of the Bible, like really helping people to see this overarching story. You know, I think sometimes the Bible is 66 books, and it's helpful to know that and see that. And there's a lot of different uh authors uh who have written those different books, but we believe um that the scripture is has one author overall, and that is God Himself. And so and really scripture is one story, um, one message. There's one hero. And and so it's really an incredible thing. I mean, I think for many of us, probably all three of us sitting at this table, one of the things that has been most exciting and encouraging to us as we have grown in our understanding of scripture is to see how the Bible tells this wonder, wondrous true story of humanity and God and Christ and um this world and things like that. So yeah, and and it just even we've been in Isaiah and Revelation, a lot of biblical theology to have done there. Um, and so I think of you start thinking about maybe even just to put some flesh on a couple ideas, like the temple, you know, God's dwelling with us. You can trace that from Eden to the tabernacle, to the temple, to Jesus, to the church, to the new heavens, the new earth. Like, I mean, there's just some wondrous sorts of things that we can trace uh in scripture that's so cool. And you can do that with a lot of different topics and ideas.
SPEAKER_00So yeah. Yeah, in part this is uh, though I haven't necessarily put this out there yet. I am thinking about doing a class at the beginning of the year of something like how to get through Leviticus. And essentially kind of piggybacking off of this idea a little bit, but more so in some books that are harder right at the beginning of maybe your reading plan. So maybe if you're thinking, man, next year, I'd love to read through the whole Bible trying to do that in 2027. We've got some help for you in in this class and maybe another one coming at the beginning of the year.
SPEAKER_01And if you're one of those many people that I told we were gonna preach through Leviticus this fall and we're not doing that, then you can get into Braden's class and get a little help this semester and then also next semester.
SPEAKER_02Very cool. Uh well, maybe maybe like a at a big picture level, not even necessarily these nitty-gritty classes, but maybe why in why in particular are we doing classes at all as a church? What's kind of our goal of doing them? Uh, why do we think that's gonna be helpful to our people, a good use of our time and resources to uh offer these classes? So, Bray and Jeff, why are we doing why are we doing these?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, I I think it's another opportunity for us to uh especially think about a way that we can learn theology. Uh that maybe we uh don't always like on Sunday mornings, we do hope that as we preach, we're not just trying to only think about all these concepts. We really are trying to think about how do we live this, right? That and then growth groups in some ways also were trying to apply scripture to life and some of those things. So they're so this isn't maybe more focused than some other spaces, though again, none of them are individually for that one thing. But uh they're they're more focused on a way that we learn, uh, some learning of theology, learning of who God is and what he's like and the scripture and just all sorts of different aspects of theology that maybe we don't have time to read a book about, but maybe we can attend a class for three or four weeks and and also do that, I think, in community. I think that's how we can learn from one another because maybe someone had a question about something that I've never thought of, but wow, I didn't know the answer to that at all when they asked that. Uh, and that might be a question, who knows? Maybe my coworker has, or maybe my neighbor has that I have a question, they have a question about God or about theology. And now I'm maybe more prepared to answer, to talk about that thing, to have thought through that. So um, I think a number of reasons, especially, yeah, learning and then doing that in community, I think is some of why we want to do these classes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've also often thought about it like, you know, it is, and I've kind of even hinted at this earlier, and I think you did too, but you know, Sunday mornings is a really unique gathering. It is our primary gathering as a church. And um, you know, obviously all three of us had have have had an opportunity, and I get a lot of opportunities to um preach and proclaim God's word to God's people uh on Sunday mornings. And that's a that's a unique and significant thing. Um, but there's a lot of things that I want to talk about on a Sunday morning that just wouldn't be right to add to a sermon. I don't think anybody's asking that I preach longer. Um, and so I think there's just so many questions that come up. And and in some ways you think, well, okay, well, small groups are awesome. So small groups aren't necessarily the best for education. That's not really what we're trying to do in a small group. Um, I think any of us who lead a small group, we wouldn't say necessarily that we've studied everything and we're teaching, we're more facilitating discussion. As Braden said, we're trying to apply God's word um as we live the life. Being in like a more formal education setting, and that doesn't mean straight lecture or anything like that, but just being in a giving the opportunities to really sit down and think through a topic biblically with a teacher, um, that sort of thing, that's really helpful. I mean, there's a reason why that's a much of what we have learned. Um, a good part of it, we would say, oh, we actually learned in a classroom with a teacher. Now we've learned a lot of stuff outside the classroom too, but the classroom's still really helpful. And I think that's true in the Christian life too. So these are just really good opportunities to be, as you said, really founded in key truths of the Christian life and of Christian theology.
SPEAKER_02That's great. Uh, maybe a couple uh questions for people listening that they might have themselves of uh what if I'm have never been to a class before at the field church, because then we've a lot we've just the last year started offering classes. Um what should I expect when I come? I think some people might even be intimidated to think about coming to a class. Uh, so how should we think about that? Or um and you guys might even be different in the way you teach them too. Are they kind of more lectures? Are they gonna be more interactive? Do I have to do any homework for them? I don't know. That might be um something to think about. And then um, yeah, maybe most importantly, will there be any snacks at these at these classes?
unknownBrain.
SPEAKER_00We probably don't even have a universal answer for most of those questions. However, I would say anyone who wants to, you know, grow and learn in their walk with Christ should come. So uh if you're a member of the Fields Church, you definitely should come. If you're uh coming just on Sundays, we'd love for you to come. You're welcome to come. We would love for you to even invite friends and have them come and join us. So anyone can come to these classes. Um, we do think that if I would really encourage if you're a member, uh, that you would come to one of the classes this fall. It'd be great if if we had our members going to maybe just one class every semester or so. Um, I think would be a really good goal for each one of us to be like, okay, I want to attend one of those classes. And even if you can't get four or four, but I'm gonna go to that one and go three of four. Like, I'm gonna make sure that's the main one I can get to and my schedule works out. Even go with my family, maybe. Yeah. Uh, all sorts of things like that would be really good. Um, sometimes there are snacks. Sometimes I've made coffee, sometimes there's not snacks. I don't know if there's always snacks. Uh, but you know, you should just come and you'll find out. Um, I don't think I've ever had snacks. I don't think I've ever had coffee.
SPEAKER_01You just you're just coming straight for the teaching. If you're maybe you should come to my class. Yeah, that's good. There might be snacks at Braden's, probably not a Jeff. Probably not gonna be a mine. But I will say one of the encouraging things, I taught a class on eschatology, which is end times um last year. And it was we had students in that class. Um, we had very Mature senior adults in that class. Um, older Christians in that class. Um, we had guys in that class, we had girls in that class, we had all sorts of different ages, families, that sort of thing. That's something that's really cool too. Like, if you think about sometimes it's it is in when we talk about being like walking alongside other Christians, sometimes it's hard to do life with when you're in your 20s with a 70-year-old. Like that's sometimes just a little bit difficult. Different uh life stages, all that sort of thing. Classes are one of those opportunities that actually make a ton of sense for all different ages uh to be there and you can kind of dig in and really gain wisdom from each other. So that's one of my favorite parts about classes is that it it really is a diverse set of people from our church together kind of learning uh that I think is really helpful. And really, we try to teach our classes that no matter like how long you've been a Christian, how deep you are in these things, if you and I say that both ways. Like if you're a very new Christian, I am confident that uh you'll be able to understand and follow and get questions asked. Um, there's gonna be some things you don't understand. That's always the case. But even if you're been a Christian for a while, I think you will find each of these classes challenging and um new things to learn. I do think some of the classes, like I will often have very none of my homework is ever uh bur I hope not. It's not burdensome, it's more devotional. So we will I'll have somebody just be reading through this passage each day over the next week or think on this prayer, you know, things like that. So there'll be some minor things that you you can do. There's no, I've never uh done a test in my class, or there's no grades, uh, things like that. So they're really, I mean, I've really enjoyed teaching them. Um, and and I I feel like we've heard pretty good feedback from people uh last semester.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so even just to speak to a little bit of what the classes are like, there are gonna be obviously there's gonna be a good amount of teaching, lecture, that sort of thing, but there'll also be a good amount of like kind of breakout or opportunity for QA. Uh, some of that's gonna be involved. So you'll you'll be talking with people at your table about different things, probably at the beginning, or kind of thinking through an idea together or looking it up a passage or doing something along those sorts. So it's gonna be interactive so that you will have opportunity to get to know one another or even you know learn from one another. But then yeah, it will be a good amount of teaching as well. Yeah. Um, so yeah, and and then I think uh this this would help you uh kind of no matter who you are, uh whether you're newer to our church, newer Christian, uh, or been around for a while. We we think this would be really helpful for you.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, maybe once one more thing, just on someone that's new. Um, I think sometimes it could be a little bit unnerving or um you'd be a little bit concerned, like, I don't know if I want to go into someone's house and meet with a small group and be a part of a group, you know, that sort of thing. That can be sometimes a little bit more difficult to think about, maybe just jumping into if you're a little bit newer to the church. And in some ways, we're like, yeah, we think it'd be better for you to get into the life of church before diving into a group. A class is great. You know, I mean, a class is a really great way to meet some people at the church and do so in an environment that isn't, I wouldn't say even if you're a little bit more introverted, things like that, it's not um, it's a pretty low bar um and it's a pretty easy step into some community. And I we both have pretty significant times before and after the class to just, you know, kind of dive into some relationships, talk some more fellowship.
SPEAKER_02Well, if you're listening, hopefully you're encouraged to uh dive into one of these classes. Right now, going on is the worship class. And so um, yeah, there's more information on our church website as to uh how to come to these classes. We'd love for you to consider coming to them. And um, as someone who has sat in on uh your guys' teaching before of classes, uh, you guys do such a great job of I think uh what you guys talked about there of for people who don't know much, not making them feel like they are in the wrong place, and but also to spur on people who are uh experts in different fields too. So um, you guys have done such a good job in that, and I know the semester is gonna be a huge help and encouragement to our people in that. So thank you guys. We're looking forward to classes this fall. Any last notes before we sign off here?
SPEAKER_00That's great. You can get registered on the website, and please do register. Oh, that does help us so we know that you're coming and also that there's space for you because we do want to make sure, as Jeff said.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think a great thing to do would be right now, like just a very easy application, is just to go look at the classes and go, hey, I'm gonna I'm gonna try to go to one and I'm gonna try to grab a few friends to come with me. And and I think that would be a really I think you will find you'll be thankful for that you've done that. Um, and it will be an encouragement to your soul.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Fieldschurch.co, go to the events page and then look for the foundation's classes, and there they are on there. All right, Jeff Braden, thank you guys for your time and thank you guys for listening. We are signing off for Fields Notes. We will see you. No, no, no, you will not see us, you will hear from us. Well, you'll see us hopefully on Sunday. See us in person. Yeah. I never know how to end it. But on the podcast, you will just hear from us. All right, I'm gonna press the done button. All right, signing off. Goodbye.
