Arrogance versus Confidence

Hey everyone, welcome to the back to the podcast. Welcome to the podcast. Thanks for stopping in. Hope everyone is having a great day, a great week. I hope, you know, as always, all the best stuff and things is going on for everyone. I um I don't know that this is gonna be a really long chat tonight. Uh this was kind of an impromptu thing I decided to to uh jump on here and talk about tonight because um if you listen to this podcast before, you know I have I have barrel racing horses that I compete on barrel racing. And I was watching um a training video from a fraturity trainer, which is basically without getting into the weeds of it, like this is a person who professionally trains barrel horses. And if you're not familiar with horses, uh, you know, you can go Google and look up what barrel racing is and and see videos and everything, everything like that. But it's basically a timed, it's a timed sport, it's a timed event, um, very prevalent in rodeos, and then also um, you know, it's gotten really big in just what we call like just barrel racing competition shows. Uh it's a it's a timed event, fastest horse wins, and basically you just have to go out there and run around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern, and it sounds super, it sounds much easier than it is. I promise you it's not like anything else to be, you know, top, top in the game at it, to to to perform at a top level obviously takes a a lot, you know, a lot of training, a lot of horse, a lot of of good riding, you know, all the stuff and things like like anything in life, to be top-notch at anything takes a whole lot of skill and a whole lot of effort. Um but anyway, uh I was listening to this trainer, and she was talking about one of she was talking basically about kind of the fine line between arrogance and confidence in these horses that she's training. And again, she's she's a top, she's like a top fraturity trainer, so she's training like the the horses that are worth the most money that you know they're performing at the highest level. I I mean these are like the top-notch barrel racing horses, and we call them like 1D horses, like that's the fastest, that's the fastest division, like those are your horses that are winning, winning everything overall, winning at pro rodeos, like they're it, you know, and these horses, you know, a lot of them are bred to do this, obviously, and a lot of them cost a whole lot of money. I mean, I'm talking hundreds of thousands of dollars, and you know, they're they're really skilled at what they do, obviously, and like they're kind of you know, they're the cream of the crop, and these are the horses that she is training, so um, you know, to put that perspective on it. And she was talking about um, you know, arrogance versus confidence in these animals, and people you if you're around people that barrel race, or if you talk to people that train barrel racing horses, um, you know, you'll hear kind of a similar thing from a lot of people. Like, you want a little fire in their belly, like you want the horse to have a little edge to it. And that's why a lot of times barrel racers, you know, they'll let I don't want to say you let your horse get away with things because there's definitely a line between good behavior, bad behavior, safe behavior, not safe behavior. And when you cross that line, obviously, you know, you can't allow that to happen. But you'll see you'll see barrel racers like let their horses get away with a little a little something here and there, you know, like if they got a little quirk if to them, if they've got a little a little attitude to them, if they got a little pushiness to them, if they if they have like if they have that little that little spunk to them, you know, they'll it's like we we let the horse get away with that to to an extent where you know, like I said, unless it crosses the safe boundary, you know, to a certain extent, you let the horse get away with that because you want the horse to have a little fire to it. I mean, this is a this is a speed event, this is a timed event. You want the horse to want it as bad as you do, and you want the horse to go out there and perform with grit and with guts and and you and with with the hunger to to do it well and to perform well and to be fast. And all these things correlate. You can't you can't take this animal and make it so submissive that then you and then expect it to turn around the next day and go out there and give you the attitude, give you the fire, give you, give you the the grit to perform at the highest level. Like you want these horses to have a little fire in their belly. And this is what this fraturity trainer was talking about, you know, the the line, like she's talking about training these animals, and she's like, you have to find the line between arrogance and confidence. And she's like, the best horses, often they're a little, they're a little overconfident, you know, they kind of cross that line and go a little to the other side of arrogance. Like they think they got it figured out, they think they know what's best, like they it's like, get out of my way, let me do this. I know what I'm doing, and like let me go. And what she was kind of saying is you might want to tolerate going a little over that line and having the horse be a little arrogant because like guess what? They're gonna they're gonna literally they're going to go in there and they're gonna want to do the thing and they're gonna want to compete and they're gonna give you all they have, and they're not gonna depend on your every single micromanaging move. Like it's like they go in there within the headspace of hey, I got this, let's go. But it just got me thinking, it just got me thinking a little bit about how we go through life and how we as humans interact in life. Um, because I think the line between arrogance and confidence is easy to easy to blur for us as humans beings, and it's easy to judge for us as human beings. Like I think we look at people sometimes and we think, oh, they're they're too confident, or they're overly confident, and you know, it can be even borderline on thinking that they're arrogant or that they're full of themselves or that they have too much of an ego, you know, this, that, and the other. And um, you know, I I love quiet confidence, I love people who are humble, you know, I love people who don't think too highly of themselves. Like that's those are all such amazing qualities for all the obvious reasons. But when you're reflecting on your when you go home at night and you're reflecting on yourself and you're reflecting on the human being that you are and what you do and and how you interact, again, I I think it's important for all of us to stay humble, it's important for all of us to you know to not be arrogant, to not have egos, like those are all important qualities. But I just I just wanted to throw this out there in relation to to talking about the horses. If you the horses that go out there and and do it all uh at the top level, win it all at the top level, they have they have a little bit of arrogance to them. They have a little bit of overconfidence, they are a little pushy, they are, they're not willing to settle, they have a little fire in their belly. And I think for us, uh, you know, when we reflect on our own selves, I mean, yes, stay humble, stay kind, stay grateful, don't get a big head, don't get a big ego, you know, don't be, don't be over, don't be overly arrogant. Like amazing, all those are amazing qualities. But I'm here to just I'm here to just challenge you to kind of think about this from another lens. Because if you want to attack something, if you want to be the best of something, if you want to like just drastically do something amazing and achieve something amazing, you know, you need a little fire in your belly and you need to believe that you can do it. You need to have a little arrogance. I'm not saying you need to go out there and I'm not saying you need to like profess to the world that you're you're the best, the best of the best ever, and you need to project that on everyone else. But like internally, when you talk to yourself at night, when you when you have a conversation with yourself at night, like you need to you need to have that that little arrogance to you. You need to believe that you can do it, and you and then all of your actions that follow need to be along that vein. Like your actions need to be ones of confidence, of overconfidence, of belief that you've got it, and like, hey, just let me go and I can I can do this, I can get it done. And um I think that that's something that is a struggle for a lot of us because we we are we we struggle to to have we we feel like we have too much of an ego or we feel like we are being arrogant if we believe in ourselves. And that's a real problem because first and foremost, you have to believe in yourself. That is the first step to making anything uh happen, to achieving anything. And just like I'm talking about with the horses, like these horses, these animals, they need to believe in themselves. First and foremost, they need to believe that they can go out there and and they can lay it down, like they can make a run, like they're talented, they're good enough, like they can achieve it. That's the first step. Like they have to believe it. And they have to be hungry for it because they believe it. And I think that there's a lot of similarities, you know, for us in our in our own personal life. Um, we have to believe it. You know, we have to believe we're capable. We have to, we have to have the fire, like the hunger, like because we know that we are capable to go out there and and do the thing or achieve the thing. So um just give this some food for thought. Uh, you know, I this is not a message for anyone to go out there and and and become somebody with a crazy ego or become somebody who's arrogant and thinks they can't be told anything, or like it's not it's not that that message, but I do think I do think we need to talk ourselves up a little bit in our in our minds, and and we need to tell ourselves, yeah, like you, you should be confident, you know, be you should be confident and you should believe that you can do this, and you should believe that you can achieve this, and you should be hungry for it, and you should go out there and you should execute in the frame of mind that you know a hundred percent you can do it, and you can achieve it.
