Welcome to Accounts of the Paranormal's Campfire Tales. I'm Julia, your host and guide into chilling tales of the paranormal. Join us around the campfire for tonight's story. Out past the last gas station, where the asphalt turns to dust and the desert stretches quiet and endless, sits a town called Red Mesa. Most folks there don't lock their doors. They don't have to. Nothing ever happens. At least that's how it used to be. The first sighting came from a man named Sam who lived on the edge of town. He swore he saw something hovering above his property, silent, round, glowing and hovering, but people laughed it off. Sam had a reputation for telling stories. But then a teacher saw it, then a trucker passing through. Then a retired couple who had lived there for forty years and had never seen anything like it. The report started coming in almost nightly, always the same, strange circular lights hovering just above the desert floor or drifting slowly across the sky. No sound, no wind, just that cold, pale glow. And then came the orbs, small ones, about the size of a basketball, floating just above the ground. People started seeing them on their properties, hovering near fences, slipping between trees, drifting past windows. Some said the lights would pause as if noticing them. That's when the dogs started barking. At first it was just nervous whining at night, then full on panic, dogs clawing at doors trying to get inside. Some ran off into the desert and never came back. Cats disappeared too. People began keeping their animals indoors. Some even stopped going out after sunset altogether. But not everyone. There was a rancher named Ellis who refused to believe any of it, said it was mass hysteria, said folks were scaring themselves. One night he rode out to check his land. He never came back. They found his horse the next morning, wandering near the edge of his property, saddle still on, no sign of Ellis. But there were marks in the dirt, circular impressions, burned into the ground like something large and heavy had pressed down. After that, things changed. The lights came closer. People reported seeing them hovering just above rooftops. One woman claimed an orb drifted through her yard, paused outside her bedroom window, and then slowly rose into the sky to join a larger light above. She said she felt noticed. Then, just as suddenly as it started, it stopped. No lights, no orbs, no sounds. The desert went quiet again. Days passed, then weeks, then months. Life in Red Mesa slowly returned to normal. People started going out at night again, kids played outside, doors were left unlocked once more, but no one forgot. And every now and then someone will step outside and get an uneasy feeling, like they're being watched, observed, with the air feeling heavy and thick. And in the distance, out beyond the ridge and unnoticed, faint circular marks appear in the sand. Fresh, as if something had just been there, watching, waiting, studying the town, one visit at a time.com, where you can access full episodes and links to all our socials.
