Aya Ogawa

Aya Ogawa is a multi-award-winning Japanese-born, Brooklyn-based playwright, director, performer, and translator whose work explores cultural identity, immigration, and intercultural exchange. Their multidisciplinary practice bridges artists, theaters, and audiences across the U.S. and Asia while challenging conventional ideas of American identity through multilingual, collaborative performance.

Ogawa's notable works include A Girl of 16, praised by The New York Times for its visual imagination; Oph3lia; Artifact; Journey to the Ocean; Ludic Proxy; and the Obie Award-winning The Nosebleed, presented at Under the Radar, Japan Society, Lincoln Center Theater, and Woolly Mammoth. Their latest work, Meat Suit, premiered in 2026.

As a director, Ogawa helmed Haruna Lee's Obie Award-winning Suicide Forest and 9000 Paper Balloons. Recent and upcoming projects include Dan Fishback is Alive, Unwell and Living in His Apartment, 73 Seconds, The Unsinkable, and 49 Days.
