SPEAKER_00

Hello and welcome to Let's Go Get Some Ice Cream, a weekly film review and podcast hosted by me, Dave, and my co-host Christopher. We worked together for several years at a small town movie theater and ever since have shared the love of movies that have seen thousands over the years. We provide unique perspectives on some well-known movies everybody's seen, and some men have, but should. If you're looking for a good movie or two to enjoy, you've come to the right place. Let's get started.

SPEAKER_06

So this week we're gonna be doing more comedy. Um yeah, comedy, more lighter movies. Um so for mine I chose from the director of Napoleon Dynamite in Nacho Libre, Jared S. That is, comes Masterminds. Masterminds is a 2016 comedy based on a true story of a um what do you call it? Loomis Fargo. What do you call that storage place though? Well, they were an armor warehouse or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Well, there was a Brinks, right? They have a Brinks truck.

SPEAKER_06

It was Loomis Fargo, but like the warehouse or wherever, that not the truck itself, but where they restore the money. I don't know. A location, a Loomis Fargo location. Right. Let's put it that way. Uh it was based on that true story of that 1987 highest, which at that time was the second highest in US history. For theft. For theft, yeah. Like 17 million? 17. No, 17.3. And then like seven months earlier, another Loomis got taken for 18.8, so that was the most. Anyway, uh this comedy is based on that true story, and the comedy, it's a comedy because they called the the heist itself the Hillbilly Heist. Oh, yeah. Because uh so many of the people that were involved in it uh were from places around North North Carolina and um smaller towns, very southern. I don't mean to stereotype anybody, but sometimes stereotypes are true. In this case they are. Um anyway, so the movie itself stars uh uh Zach Galfinakis as David Gantt who's like the main character. Yeah. Uh and it also stars uh most of the I noticed most of the female Ghostbusters. Oh yeah. Uh Leslie Jones plays uh the FBI agent uh Scanlon, maybe? Is that right? Yeah, special agent Scanlon. Um Kristen Wig plays what was her name? Kelly Campbell. She's like the love interest for David Gantt. Uh and uh Kate McKinnon plays David Gant's fiance, right. I didn't catch her name. Jandice. That's always these stupid names. Um and then throwing in uh they're also those three from SNL, and then throwing in Jason Sudakis later, so the full SNL compliment. Right. I just mentioned that because um there was like the SNL movies like back in the day, like uh Night of the Roxberry and The Ladies' Man, which are strictly from Skits. But then we had the the former SNL people who also were still under Lauren Michaels' control or what. And maybe he had to sign a contract with them or something where like you wouldn't have this movie if it wasn't for me giving you Domin SNL, therefore you have to give me production credit or something, even though I'm not gonna be anywhere on this movie, really. Did he he was producer on this right like co-producer? But I th I again I think it's more like you can't have my people unless you throw me a uh co-producer credit. I can't see him doing anything with you know actively. This seems like it's more all Jared has and his partner, so I think Lauren Michaels is more just uh symbolic. But he there are four former SNL people, so maybe he gets his little gets to wet his beak or whatever. Sure. Um feather in his cap. That's right. And then what who else we got?

SPEAKER_05

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, and then rounding up the cast, Owen Wilson as Steve quote unquote Geppetto Chambers. Oh yeah, that's right. Call me Geppetto, and Mary Elizabeth Ellis' wife, Michelle. Uh in the real story, it's basically um Owen Wilson's character, Steve, who is the one that kind of wants to do the heist. He gets the idea of the heist in his mind, and I guess from watching TV or whatever, because the FBI found this out later that he just kind of watched a bunch of shows and just thought, oh, I could do that. There's a lot more to it. The shows aren't going to show you all the security. I mean, this is stupid. Just seeing it on TV and just thinking, oh, of course I could do that. Uh and there's actually a thing at the beginning of the movie where they're doing little flashbacks of like there's like uh three guys come up to an armored car, yeah. They run in their car and get back, and one guy's got a box over his and the he's trying to rob a community store. He's got a box over his whole upper torso, and the clerk just like throws a bottle of the soda at him or whatever. Right. He falls down. But there's one scene where there's a guy who's like, I want to say it's one of the Carride and brothers, maybe, but he's like doing judo and he's like a it's like the 70s movie, and he's like hitting all the bad guys, and Owen Wilson character is like, oh, I could like in real life he's thinking that's what I should do. So, of course, how stupid are they? Um so anyway, they convinced David Gantt, who was an employee at the Luna Spargo, to steal. I mean, it's basically it's it's basically the same storyline as the movie itself, with the exception that um Kelly Campbell was actually married in real life. So, and David Gant was going to be married, so they're kind of both cheating on their significant others. And I'm trying to think, um Yeah, and and uh Steve Campbell was like an FBI informant. So sometimes those dudes I know in real life, they sometimes they get like, I'm working with the police, therefore you can't touch me and any so they get kind of like a little ego thing going. So sure, next thing you know, let's rob a you know this Loomis Fargo place.

SPEAKER_00

Well, at first, no. I mean they joke about it, David and Kelly, when they're driving together in the Loomis van. Oh, what didn't you know about stealing and but she sees that David's more like, oh Does she bring it up to him? Later.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah, she does. That's right.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, they joke about it before all that.

SPEAKER_06

There's a million dollars behind this wall right here. Let's go, you know, we can just get it. And then David's like, oh, and but he plays oh no, I it was the opposite in real life. David Gantt wanted to do it, and she was already gone by the time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because in the movie she gets herself fired. Right.

SPEAKER_06

And then that's when Steve goes, that's when you said the boss called him a bearded lady face. You can't talk to David Gantt that way.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. That was some funny stuff, that little banter between them. But that's later because now Kelly lives with Steve and that and the crew, yeah, and he puts it in her head that, you know, well, and she admits that, well, he does have a crush on me.

SPEAKER_06

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Right. And the way it unfolds, especially when she calls David, and he's at with his fiancee who Kate McKinnon says, I had her, I had the guy, but he died. Something happened to her ex. He died, and then she ended up saying, even her mom goes, Why'd you settle for him? And which Oh, Kate McKinnon?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I love that story. They're sitting on the back of like a pickup truck or something, and she's telling this photographer about and she's like, I met the most beautiful man in the world. And they scroll over to pan over to he's got like a white beater, right? And that hair, how do you describe that hair? What is that? It's like Prince Valiant, T-Man, right?

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_06

But yeah, and he's like sitting there, like, you know, all proud of himself or whatever. And she's saying all this stuff about this great man. Oh, but then he died. Yeah. And then I met this dude. He was like he was at his his funeral and he couldn't hold up his part of the casket. Right. Like, man, she's just dumping him. So how'd y'all meet? I'm a sucker for courtship stories.

SPEAKER_01

Well, if you must know, a couple years back I was at a youth prize concert at church, and I saw the most handsome man that I had ever seen in the world. He was looking right at me. We went on a date, and then we fell very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very deeply in love. And then he died. Here we are two years later. What a story.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we're happy as all get out.

SPEAKER_01

I couldn't be happier later.

SPEAKER_06

Well, that one's dead. This one's alive.

SPEAKER_00

She was funny.

SPEAKER_06

She was funny. She never really took off either. And her No, but I I don't know. Oh, well, Barbie, right? No, that's not really a starring role.

SPEAKER_00

That was a side character kind of. Well, she did what, a couple movies with other actresses. I'm not gonna get into because I can't think of the top of my head. But they tried to make you're right. They tried to. I don't I don't know.

SPEAKER_06

Sometimes this doesn't happen. Maybe your your thing is, you know, SNL. That was your thing. That was for you.

SPEAKER_00

She works better with an ensemble than she does solo.

SPEAKER_06

Right. Kind of like we were talking about last week with Chris Elliott. Right. And SNL, he was killing it, David Letterman. But then you give him what was it? It's called Get a Life. I saw it afterwards. Right. He had a show and was like, sorry, excuse me. We're like, nah, I don't we don't want you by yourself.

SPEAKER_00

We want you to look at it. Even in Shits Creek, right? When he plays he's better at playing off of people. And I think Kate's the same way. Right. It's not a knock. It's actually credit to them because you just have your niche.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, you have the thing that you're strong at, and you're not strong at everything.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And some people, I mean, obviously there's the Will Farrells and Adam Sandlers who capitalize in all that. But yeah, that's yeah, you're right. When they pan over and she talks about her, you're thinking, oh, it's David Gantt. She's talking about David Gann. And no.

SPEAKER_06

Because the camera actually does move when she says, the most beautiful man in the world, and he's he's all zooms right in, right. Leaned over doing the gangster pose or whatever, with that stupid hair and white beard. Yeah. Oh crazy. I actually as a kind of related aside, I heard, and I went to look it up again, but I think this was after the Hangover one. I don't think it was after two. I think it was Hangover, then this, then Hangover Two. I could be wrong about that. And then he also did that movie with um uh with Robert Downey Jr. where they were going across country. Him and yeah, Zach. The point of my story is that Zach Galfinakis heard the criticism of him as being like one note, like he's always like wacky over the top. He plays the same character over and over again. And this is the first movie where he's kind of got that and was like, oh no, maybe I need to do something else going forward. But he really didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Whatever. This is actually after all three. Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_06

So this yeah, that makes more sense then. Because now you've seen him do that same role three times. Now he does this role, it's the same basic person, an unhinged, crazy dude. Right with a crazy facial hair. So this is when he started going, okay, now going forward, I need to start doing something else. Right. And he started pulling back from you know doing roles and stuff. But I think he did that talk show or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the ferns.

SPEAKER_06

Between two ferns. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I mean, he can only play what the Alan character from The Hangover for so long. Right, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Three sequels, two sequels is actually two, but not frankly, if you ask me. Well, the first one was perfect.

SPEAKER_00

The first one was great. And they killed it. Fucked it up. But anyway, uh yeah. I mean, I his character, I I like the character. I mean, there's essences, I guess you could say, of Alan, but it's a little different. Yeah. Slightly different. But I just think, you know, he went back, like you said a second ago, to his roots, and he was being he was a funny, he is a funny guy.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, but I could see how even for him, where they're typecasting you, right? I mean, yeah, it's paying you a lot of money, but yeah, do I want to get it?

SPEAKER_06

But you're gonna burn out fast too. Because then people are gonna get tired of it, which is what he said he started hearing. People saying, Oh, this guy again, he does the same thing over and over again.

SPEAKER_00

I think you're right though, he had been doing this, he'd been doing that other TV show too, besides two furns, uh the one with Louie Anderson.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, oh yeah, I know. Yeah, I remember talking about where Lou was in playing his mother. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I think he started doing that.

SPEAKER_06

So I think people just kind of you know, it happens. People get tired of you. Right. Oversaturated or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

And I think Zach's another one who doesn't I'm not knocking Zach. I liked him and he knew like, hey, you know what?

SPEAKER_06

I played my hand, it's time to at least he heard the, you know, he got he read the writing on the wall and was like, okay, I need to switch it up or something.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_06

So some people don't ever catch that or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

But we digress. The point of going back to the story is that yes, he talked Kelly commits him because she's knows he has a fiance, and we can see that he's really harving a lot of feelings for Kelly.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he's not hiding it. Yeah, he he's he's into Kelly. Oh yeah, definitely. Kristen Wig. And this was for her after Bridesmaids. Oh yeah. So she was kind of on the map, too. Um, yeah, so anyway, they they're flirtatious. She tries to get him to um think about doing this heist, and she, like you said, she calls him when he's I think they're in the middle of taking pictures or something. He had like his tuxedo on or whatever. Right. And and uh Kate McKinnon's giving him shit about the goo-goo clusters. Right, and he's cucumber bun. It's so tight. Yeah, why did you like lose some weight?

SPEAKER_00

Uh just trying to motivate him, right? That's what she said.

SPEAKER_01

There he is, the man of your dreams. He'll live here with us forever. It's like you're marrying both of us, David. Me and Mama. David, have you given much thought to what you'll be doing for your honeymoon?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I got a few plans, yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

I tell you what he won't be doing if he doesn't lose some weight.

SPEAKER_02

That's a good call strike.

SPEAKER_00

And he eats in spider because he got the call from Kelly.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Yeah. He um he takes the call from Kelly, and then there's some first of all, the movie has to be seen, I think, for most people. I mean uh there's so many visual gags. Jesus. Um, a lot of one ladder. I can't I'm not even gonna try to like replicate. You know, and so oh, this guy did something funny. No, let me tell you what he did. That's not that's never funny. Right. You have to watch it for yourself. But in that one scene where Kate McKinnon is telling him he has to try to like lose some weight, he does this crazy laugh or whatever. You know, he's like after he talks to Kelly, he's like, Oh, now I'm gonna be with Kelly. So, you know, he's like he laughs in her face, and also he like trips over the table and stuff like that. It's like all these visual gags you can have to see to like to appreciate.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

But um, that's what sets the plan in motion. Um, he goes to the facility later on, right? And that Volkswagen El Camino door of my god. Oh my god. That's so funny. Uh he goes to the facility, he uh disables the cameras, except for he leaves one, he forgets one or he misses it or whatever. Yeah, he forgot it. That happened in real life, too. Right. Uh so that's played for comedy, but you can imagine in real life they're like, God, this guy's a fucking idiot. He's dancing around doing all this shit on the camera. Like, I'm home free, I got all this money. Oh my god. Uh so he gets the money. Oh, no, no. Um, before that, I skipped the part I was telling you about when they met with uh Owen Wilson Geppetto.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, yeah. So Miss Campbell tells me y'all worked together over at Lumas. Said you're one of their best employees, just a real straight arrow, clean as a nun zundies. Fact is, she said you're so trustworthy, you're one of the only non-managers to have a key to the vault. See where I'm going with this? I saw you walk in here. You're a good-looking dude. Okay, there's no getting around that. You carry your weight in your chest and your ass, and it just You have a powerful build, and I think you deserve more.

SPEAKER_02

What y'all don't realize.

SPEAKER_04

The only thing is, you can't pull a job off like that on your own.

SPEAKER_02

You need Confederates. Loomis Fargo may look like a big warehouse, but the money inside belongs to the banks. And if you take it, well, technically speaking, you're robbing a bank. And that's a federal offense.

SPEAKER_01

David, just just listen. We're just we're just talking.

SPEAKER_06

Just think about it. Uh, when Kelly lured him to this uh date or whatever. This diner, right? Yeah, and then it turns out that there's three there's two dudes just sitting there looking straight at him, the henchmen or whatever, and Owen Wilson's character's got his back to their booth, so you can't see him. He's like got his head down. Right.

SPEAKER_00

And uh, oh, I want you to introduce my friend. Uh he's you'll call me Geppetto rises up. Well, no, actually it's the I mean and David cut Because I pulled the strings. Well Well, actually it wasn't Geppetto, it was what you call me He said, What'd you call me?

SPEAKER_06

He almost turns around like he's all mad. Right. And he goes, I just mean like, you know, Geppetto was a woodcarver, Stromboli was the one that was the puppeteer, and they just get off the subject or whatever. But it's just little stupid shit like that. It's like, but it's really funny.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it's classically funny.

SPEAKER_06

But I think there, that's when they convince him to do the heist, then he goes to do the heist.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_06

Um basically, I mean, I don't want to like give away the whole plot of the movie, but he he steals the money, he goes to Mexico thinking that Kelly's gonna come with him, but Kelly, meanwhile, is more she's there, they're just there, he's a pawn, he's a Patsy. Right. Basically, they send him away with little$40,000. They're keeping the money, they're gonna get him.

SPEAKER_00

And he goes, That's more than I make in a year, or something.

SPEAKER_06

Right, he's happy, but they're gonna like rat him out.

SPEAKER_00

Well, Kelly keeps him like, Oh, I'll join you later. Right now, we're trying to get it.

SPEAKER_06

Meanwhile, we gotta deal with the 17 million you left us or whatever, you know. So, yeah, of course, she's not coming, dude. Um, but he thinks she is uh yeah, I don't know what it was in the movie. In real life, it was 50,000. That's the max you can take across the border. I didn't even know that. Anyway, whatever. Uh so they gave him a little is whatever it is, it's a little it's a fraction of what the whole money, but they're like 17, yeah. Yeah, rat you out and never see you again. And he uh when that doesn't work, they still can Jason Zudakus. Oh my god. That and I I have to say, like, you have to watch the scene where they're hiring him.

SPEAKER_00

Michael, Aaron, Mike, McKinney. Yeah, Mike McKinney.

SPEAKER_06

Where the whole family's there.

SPEAKER_00

I don't want I don't want to say anything because that little thing.

SPEAKER_06

You want me to him? I'm sorry, it's ridiculous to hear a bunch of people laughing, but it's yeah. You have to watch it to to see, but and to appreciate it. He's amazing.

SPEAKER_04

So y'all want me to kill. Well, no, no, we'll we'll talk about it later. Not now, not in front of. Oh, I see one of them.

SPEAKER_01

Boys get upstairs right now.

SPEAKER_06

Now he was uh he's another one that's like uh he's kind of taken off a little more from after SNL as far as his movie career. Movie and then Ted Lasso, of course. Um so he's done a little better than the other ones and the horrible bosses. Oh yeah. Um, but he's very talented, very good at what he does. But his role as the Smarmy hitman sent down to kill David Gantt, uh perfection. You just have to watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, it was hilarious. Um the whole thing in Mexico is pretty funny too.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah. God. Where he's like an old school hitman who likes to do stuff by hand and he's just unhinged. Um, yeah. So you have to watch that. Again, a bunch of visual gags that I can describe them, but you really have to see them, you know, for them to really be as funny as they should be.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And we're not trying to ruin that for you because you do need to sit there and just have have at it because it's hilarious. Yeah. I forgot, like I told you when we were coming here, how funny it was. You know, I hadn't seen it probably it's been years, but there's all these random scenes, like at the beginning, they're like in the shooting rain.

SPEAKER_06

Oh god, he shoots himself in the ass, and it's like you I mean you gotta there's so much, so many jokes packed into this, you just kinda have to watch it yourself. And I won't give away the ending, but um it's a true story, so it's not like it's a spoiler, you know. You know they didn't get away with it. Unfortunately. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. Or or maybe they did, because there's money. Not accounted for supposedly. Right. It's kind of a little bit of presumptuous to think that they did that on purpose as opposed to just accidentally. Right. You know, so oh, we still have some money though. The feds didn't find out about it, or they wrote it off, or whatever they do with financial crimes. Um, yeah, it's a great movie. Oh, let me see. I got the um uh let's see, the cost was 25 mil. Yeah, I was looking at that. And it made 29.7 or 30 mil, and they've seen in some places. But this is the first time I've seen there's like a um there's a website, and I want to go back to it later for future movies, but it has like it's called in finance or something like that, and it talks about the breakdowns of the costs, and they said this was an additional 20 million in um marketing. So it actually 45 then. What's that? So you're saying it costs 25. So it costs 25 million plus the 20 million. Oh, I don't know why they didn't ever say what the marketing why don't you just include that? I don't whatever. Yeah. I guess that makes sense because you start out with this like I need X amount of money to make this movie. Right. And that's what they give you. And then the marketing is something that happens later. That's that's more you don't really know what it's necessarily gonna be ahead of.

SPEAKER_00

Distribution, the the theater, the company that's distributing it throughout the they're the ones who fork over that. Right.

SPEAKER_06

So it that's tacked on at the end, but it's not in the initial estimate. But anyway, um 25 mil it costs, they made 29.7 or 30 mil. Sure. And then there was an additional twenty million in marketing, which I I don't know what that pays for. I don't remember seeing a lot of advertising this movie when it came out.

SPEAKER_00

Uh just yeah, the commercials and all that.

SPEAKER_06

Regular trailers. I yeah. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

But they they I guess that yeah, equals 20 million somehow. I'm sure there's ad revenue where you put it in magazines and you're like, oh, coming soon. Little Cida buses or whatever. The the poster, whatever, and them. Yeah. So I'll I guess I'll seem bloated to me, but whatever.

SPEAKER_06

You and me both. As I was saying on the way over here, Rodden Tomatoes gives it 34% because they suck. Metacritic 47%. Uh there's uh Roger Ebert.com, because he's passed away by this point, I think.

SPEAKER_00

I think you're correct.

SPEAKER_06

He's uh there's a guy Matt Zoller Sites.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I see that.

SPEAKER_06

Gave it three out of four stars. He said a smart smart dumb comedies hold a place in your heart, you'll mastermind. Yeah. Most definitely. I mean, I appreciate that. Right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Smart dumb, I mean I like I said, I think, and this is why I like this part of our segment because and I said it a while ago when we did uh old school. I mean, we do need to laugh again and just rediscover laughing and just making light of ourselves. Not take like we said, we're on this because of the most of the Academy Awards are very dour and down, and yeah, you know, that criteria is like, can't we just laugh? I mean, there's already enough crap that's just escape for a little bit, just have a good time.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. And why can't they acknowledge that as being worthy of being I mean it's good for your psyche too.

SPEAKER_00

I think it just helps just to laugh, just to get away from everything. Yeah. Ah, we're so attuned to you know, doomsday.

SPEAKER_06

It's like just right. You don't want to like when you go in a movie, you want to escape. You don't want to say, oh, here's more people having problems. I thought I had it bad. Yeah, I feel bad for them now.

SPEAKER_00

Right. No. Like I said, I'll stick to that. I think, yeah, we need to laugh again and we need to start. I mean, not you and I proverbaby, but studios need to put out instead of just horror comic books, let's get some more comedy going. Let's get some stuff to laugh at.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, and that's it. That brings me to the point that I was gonna ask overall with this movie, and something we've talked about before. You hear this this criticism all the time from both sides of the political spectrum or whatever, like you can't do these type of comedies anymore. Or some people say you can, you can't. With this movie, what what in this movie can't be done right now?

SPEAKER_00

Thank you.

SPEAKER_06

I I didn't see it. Yeah, nothing. I mean, I'm trying to think of Yeah, I know. The only thing I could think of is like if you're uh how to put this like elitist, like if you're an elitist, and like I was saying with these reviews of like, oh, 28%, 34% is so stupid. Yeah, it's a comedy, it's supposed to be stupid.

SPEAKER_05

Right.

SPEAKER_06

You know, it's like uh I don't know, back in the day we had Cheech and Chong had no plot, they just smoked pot all the time and they fell down. It's like it's three stooges. It's right to be, you know, everything doesn't have to be, you know, hamnet or whatever. Things can just be what they are, right? But so I could see people, I guess what I was trying to say is like there's some people that are just joyless about movies, like they have to hit some kind of moral threshold or something. They like I was telling you, I was giving you shit about the sorority boys. Like I don't I mean the moral lesson at the end about how to treat women or whatever from these guys who are dressed as women, but uh we'll get to that in a second.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we will.

SPEAKER_06

Um, but yeah, there's nothing in this movie that you can't do today that I there's no nothing racial, no homophobic. I mean, it's just like the guy shooting himself in the ass. That's just slapstick stuff, you know. You know, and wearing like a crazy red cowboy outfit. Oh my god, right. Getting diarrhea in the pool. Like it's like if you're above that, if you're like you're you're nose above that, then like okay, it's not ready for you. But just don't watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Thank you.

SPEAKER_06

That's right. Don't review it and give it negative reviews, so we can't, the rest of us can't watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Right. As you can tell, this is a very much so two thumbs up because I like I said, revisiting was grand. It was hilarious.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Good time, and I agree with you. What it what can't be done in this movie that you could do replicate today.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I just like I said, we don't have enough comedy personally. I don't I don't know.

SPEAKER_06

There's nothing wrong. There's nothing whenever I hear people say, Oh, you can't do comedies nowadays, it's like I get where people are coming from with that, because the people that we went through this whole period of like canceling or whatever. But I think some of it's a cop out too.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, this movie could be made right now, and I would watch it right now. Oh, yeah. I did watch it. I watched yesterday. It was funny. Right. It's still funny. Um, you know, Chasing Sudeca shooting guy with an old weapon or whatever that blows up. I mean, that's just like, you know, guys tripping and falling down. I don't know. To me, that's just like, I don't know. I'm not above that.

SPEAKER_00

That's a good time.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Some things I could see, okay, you know, but this I think there's no reason why you can't. And this, whenever I hear people, I guess just in closing, whenever I hear people say, Oh, you can't do comedies anymore, I think of this and then I call I call bullshit on them.

SPEAKER_05

Right.

SPEAKER_06

So just so you know in the future when I say, Oh, so and so said, you know, blah blah blah, it's like, no, no, you're just lazy. Or, you know, especially with the celebrities, because they have money. They can get money to have their movies made. We already know from Kevin Costner. That's an extreme example, but I'm saying, yeah, if Vince Vaughn or wherever, you know, you people that are complaining, get your buddies to throw what 20 million. You guys got you guys on your couch cushions. Throw that together, make your little fucking movie and see what happens. Right. So don't sit there and complain. Yeah. So anyway, that's my complaint. That's our complaint. That's your uh hot take this week. Yes, yeah. We can make these comedies and please stop complaining about it and make them. Thank you. I agree. Um, yeah, I anyway. Yes, like you said, thumbs up for me. I I I don't know where I oh you know what? I saw this on HBO Max to cover that right now. Okay before I forget. It was I always say free. I know I pay for HBO Max, but I just forget.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Sorority Boys

SPEAKER_06

Um anyway, I was scrolling through the thing one day and I saw I saw a match of mine. I was like, oh, I remember seeing that in the theater. Did we see that together? Yes. Yeah. And I was like, that movie was funny. I'm gonna watch that again. I watched it again, I was not disappointed. Oh no. Yeah, and just as an aside, after this movie went off, the movie The House came on, which is also not a great movie. It's not like gonna win the awards, but it was pretty decent. It wasn't bad. Uh Will Farrelling again, a movie that I don't know when it was done, but there's nothing offensive about it. It's just adults being immature. Yeah. Somewhere in there, but yeah. Two women getting into getting into a fight or whatever, you know, uh, and cussing each other out. It's just funny. Right. So that's all I got for that one. I um I highly recommend this movie. If you just wanna, you know, things are going rough and you just want a nice laugh just as some escapism. Right. This is the one. Hey, sorry to interrupt, but if you're enjoying the reviews, please take a second to like, rate, and subscribe to our podcast. We'd really appreciate it. And now back to the reviews.

SPEAKER_00

So on to me. My my pick this week, I picked Sorority Boys, which is kind of innocuous, kind of a juvenile, sophomore kind of humor. Right. Um, it's basically sorority boys is in a 2002 American comedy film directed by Wallace Wolodarsky about a group of college boys who dress up as girl girls in order to prove their innocence for a crime they did not commit. Yeah. The film starred Barry Watson, Michael Rosenbaum, and Harlan Williams. Harlan Williams. Who uh I've seen him in stand-up, that was years ago. He was hilarious. Hilarious. Hilarious guy. I mean, I he's another one. He was hilarious in that too. He's another one that has kind of he's done movies. He he did uh starring where he was what spaceman or something like that. They gave him a I mean he didn't take off.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, he hasn't really taken off the way his stand-up career would would have maybe dictated he would have.

SPEAKER_00

Sure, you know. And I don't know if again it's not not a fault of his. Maybe like Kate McKinnon and others, he's he's good as far as part of an ensemble, but not the lead.

SPEAKER_06

Some people just don't want to see you in a different thing like they like you in this thing and they don't want to open their minds beyond that or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

And it just might be the vehicles he got picked for. I mean, with whoever he his uh agent or whoever had him go with, and just it didn't click. He's like I said, but he is funny.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, very funny.

SPEAKER_00

Um but in the plot that that's yeah, these three sorority brothers that are for isn't it? It's uh Kappa Omicron Kappa, are they say I won't say what yes You can say it's cock, yes, it's cock.

SPEAKER_06

Um uh would that I know that'd be fine nowadays, right? People know what cock is.

SPEAKER_00

Uh you would hope.

SPEAKER_06

It's immature, I know thank you.

SPEAKER_00

That's that's that's why I said it's very innocuous.

SPEAKER_06

Well you're not supposed to take it seriously, you know. You're immature for taking it seriously.

SPEAKER_00

Well, there's three the three characters, right? There's Dave, Adam, and Robert known as Doofer, right? That's Harlan Williams, and Dave is Barry Watson. And Adam is Michael Rosenbaum. Yeah. Um but their brothers in this uh sorority, they're uh fraternity. I'm sorry. I got jumped ahead. They're they're fraternity. Yeah. Um yeah, for their fraternity. Uh they got guys who look up to them and think one of them's in charge of the he's like the treasurer, right? Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

I mean they they have parties, they have all kinds of yeah, it's a typical 80s, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, real quick as an aside, I mean, this is kind of like you can almost say almost paying homage to uh Revenge of the Nerds, too.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, a little bit.

SPEAKER_06

I was thinking like Porkies, maybe?

SPEAKER_00

Maybe that too. But I mean, there's a a mix of different old.

SPEAKER_06

I mean that was a genre right that which is also not a thing anymore. Right. Uh there was that ski one ski school or something like that. Anyway, yeah. Porkies, but on a ski ski resort or the same idea. That's the formula the those movies had back in the day. Animal House. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then but the one, what is it, the present, the guy that's in charge of the frat is a real dork.

SPEAKER_06

The guy with a big pompadour or whatever. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And they don't even respect him. No one really does, but they just kind of go along, okay, uh, because his dad or someone's high up in their food chain. You know, so that's why they kind of humor him to keep right.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

And I guess those fraternities traditionally they lead to when you graduate, people you know go on to have students' jobs, and therefore you're their brothers and networking, right? It's a way of networking, yeah. Opportunity, yeah. But uh so there's that aspect of it where they have to kind of play nice dude or whatever, you know, because they got opportunities for after college.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Because if uh Dave's dad, who's high up, I I think what, in some kind of venture capital or something. Right. And he has a way, and they're like, Dave, if I mean his two buddies, Adam and Doofer, tell him, or especially Adam, when you get hired, you could hire us. Exactly. You know, that works. And that yeah. But it as as we walk into the even the story, there's a what they're I forget. Let me get to the guy's name. That's the president. Is it Spence? Rivington. Sounds familiar. I think it is Spence, but he's the one that's the the nerd and he's in charge of the fraternity. But we see him and he's trying he has these new rec what recruits. And he's sitting there trying to tell them like pledges. Pledges, thank you, yes. Um and then the three break, you know, hey Spence, we need the room. Oh, come on, guys. He has that mask over, he's trying to, you know, be intimidating. Right. But yeah, there's plenty of uh partying going on as we see. There's just and there's obviously a lot of women. There's and there's that other sorority, the the ones that they always they hook up with, the tries.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm trying to remember what they were.

SPEAKER_06

Then there's like the pro politically correct pro-feminist ones that kind of like stand outside and protest or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Delta Omicron Gamma, right? Yeah. Our dog. That's where all the misfits of females go for their sorority.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, they're the ones that are haters that stand outside.

SPEAKER_00

They actually have a spy go in and then they have a little game in the dog catcher. They throw like a net over the ugliest woman, quote unquote. Ugly for Hollywood standards that is. But um as we go, I mean, they're enjoying themselves that Dave, Adam, and do for they live at they're living large in this uh fraternity. And then um one night they're sitting at their table after the parties, and then their fraternity, and Spence is asking about the funds, and then Adam goes, Yeah, they're fine, they're in the safe. And then they, are you sure? And sure enough, they open the safe, and all they find is a couple dollars and they used rubber, and you guys have stolen the money. And so now they're being accused of stealing the money. They get kicked out of the frat. Yeah. And they know that that it's a setup and they suspect who it is, um, but they can't prove it.

SPEAKER_06

So basically the president's mad at them because they don't take it seriously enough, so he's setting them up.

SPEAKER_00

Well you get disrespected by them, right? Right.

SPEAKER_06

So he's setting them up to take the fall and get them kicked out.

SPEAKER_00

But their loophole is that because Doofer says one day he was looking for something and he found out there was a camera. Oh, right. And that Adam has to film his conquest. Right. And then they realize, hey, we just need to get that tape because they've been kicked out, so now they have to manufacture a way of getting in. Yeah. Right? So that's when we get into them now doing as like doing a Tootsie. They go in and they dress as women and they join the dog.

SPEAKER_06

And they're actually not bad looking other than Harlan Williams. As Roberta. Uh yeah. Um, just to rewind real quick, though. So just to lay the groundwork for this thing that I had said earlier, um, when a woman stays overnight with them, they have this ritual where all the guys do the walk of game thing where they shame her and take pictures and they throw something at her or something. They did something when she gets to the end. No, they take her picture. I take a picture at the end. They do something. Anyway, whatever. But that if they shame her basically, like, oh, you spend the night, whatever you got late or whatever. And then, and also just to reiterate the whole dog catcher thing. Like if a woman comes into the party and she's ugly, these guys get together, they throw a net over her, and get her out. Throw her out of the out of the frat, and then the other, the sorority, what what do we call them? Dog, is that what they're called, or whatever?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Then that woman comes and goes, Oh, you shouldn't want to be with those guys anyway, blah, blah, come join us. And then now all of a sudden, all the ugly, quote unquote, I'm using air quotes, women are all in this other fraternity dog or whatever. So just set that up because there's a thing later on.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. But yeah, uh thank you for that. Um, but yes, they end up getting into dog as the pledges. Yeah. They sit in front and then they're homely.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_06

Dog is more open to everybody politically correct, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

I don't want to say because there's a woman.

SPEAKER_06

No, they say they're plus size, something like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_06

Isn't that what they're like, oh, you gotta let them in because they're plus size or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Something, right?

SPEAKER_06

So it's some kind of buzzword thing, like, oh yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_00

And of course, the the the one uh president for dog, I mean, she's actually a fairly attractive woman. Yeah. But she they they downplay her because they make her without makeup, but you can still see she's very attractive.

SPEAKER_06

She's Hollywood ugly, yeah. Right, thank you. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

But she's smart, you know, very good looking, nice little body. Right. Um they don't really at first because their only motivation, Dave, Adam, and Doofer, is to get in back in. Right.

SPEAKER_06

Get back into the frat house to get that camera, the tape or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Right. So that's that's her whole mission. And as we see these backstories unfolding because they start to hang out with these girls, Adam's the only one that's really on point of like because Dave and Doofer.

SPEAKER_06

Adam is Rosenbaum's character. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because Dave and are like they're more sympathetic, they actually listen to the girls. And even Harlan Williams is something like Harlan Williams is off on his own. But he was hilarious. I mean, he even sits there with the cheeks.

SPEAKER_06

He's still trying to have fun, even yeah, even wearing drag or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. Yeah. Oh, that's right.

SPEAKER_06

Uh Rosenbaum's character is serious about let's get that tape and get out of here.

SPEAKER_00

I want to say his character's name was Adina.

SPEAKER_06

That sounds about right, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then I know for Harlan, his or do for his was Roberta. Robert and then a little A. Oh, Roberta. And then Day went with Daisy. And that dude is the guy from Seventh Heaven. Barry Watson is who we're referring to, right. That's what I was saying.

SPEAKER_06

He's a pretty man.

SPEAKER_00

And then Michael Rosenbaum did Smallville. I think I want to say he was in between because it's obvious he's wearing a wig on and when he's at the bald cap or whatever. Because in his when he's playing Day or Adam, he has like funny looking hair, but it's like but uh because of his character in Smallville being Lex Luthor, he shaves his head. Right. And this might have been a hiatus, so because they I saw the after and he had like short hair. Uh so they have to put the I mean, I don't see why he just had him in short hair, but whatever.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, my point of that is that he was doing Smallville, so he had some fl fame too from television, just like Barry Watson. But and like we said, Harlan Williams playing Doofer, known for being a comedic talent, very hilarious stand-up comedian.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, it's it's a good paradigm. You know, you got your two up-and-coming stars and the wild card comedian. Sure. Yeah, you might make some money doing that.

SPEAKER_00

But like I said, comedy ensues when they're inside the sorority house. Uh they even have I'm trying to remember. She because Heather Matrazo playing Katie. Um, she kind of she had a claim to fame because she did what was that? An independent film, her first film. Is this the Wiener Dog? Well, it was Wiener Dog, but it's the character's name, but that's not the title of the movie. This is the the blonde that no, she's the has the hoarse laugh. Like she has that, she's just uh she talks really loud.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, there's there's some women in there. I I've seen them and stuff. I just didn't like have the time to like what research.

SPEAKER_00

That's our job. Oh, welcome to the dollhouse is what I remember uh Heather from. That was her start.

SPEAKER_06

Isn't there one that's deaf or something like that? Or I don't know. She has a weird laugh. Is that the one that's a little bit more?

SPEAKER_00

That's the one that's Heather Metros.

SPEAKER_06

She said she was deaf or something, and she can't hear her laugh, so she doesn't know it's stupid.

SPEAKER_00

Well, they just because she's in that house that welcomes everybody. They just have all the misfits, quote unquote, yeah. But yeah. Hollywood misfits, yeah. But anyway, um I'm kind of going all over the place. But yeah, I just remember her. She's the one that sticks out. Um you're talking about Melissa Stage Miller who plays Leah, the she's the lead of the sorority. Anyway, there yeah, it's just interesting that dynamic. The two are actually blending in quite well, and Adam's like, What's wrong with you guys? Because they're actually talking like women. We get the you know, uh I don't want to say superfluous, but the thing where the girl goes, Do you guys have a pad? I have a heavy flow. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And you know, they're like, Oh no.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. They have the three guys who happen to all be in the same room at the same time. Coincidentally, yeah. I mean Hey Duff. Hey, what do you think of this?

SPEAKER_04

I brought it from Leah. That is pretty. Wish I could fit into a size six, man. Fuck this. Hey, what do you think of this? Is that gonna look good in this? Like a midriff and the thing.

unknown

No, no.

SPEAKER_03

You need something more than, you know, something that accentuates your curves more. What the fuck is going on here? What's your problem? What's my problem? Where do I fucking start? My bra's rubbing me raw. I have a fat ass, and I twisted my ankle three times today. Why are you wearing heels? We're in college, no one's wearing heels.

SPEAKER_07

Hills are out, man. Last year.

SPEAKER_03

They make my legs look slimmer. I have a fat ass. No, you don't. Yes, I do. No, you don't. Look, relax. It's gonna be okay. It's not gonna be okay.

SPEAKER_04

What is that?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know.

SPEAKER_07

Oh my god, Gina, those are the worst ingrown hairs I've ever seen. Any of you girls have any heavy flow maxi pads I could borrow? So threw an entire box this morning and I had to use a whole roll of toilet paper and I used a last one.

SPEAKER_04

I gotta go.

SPEAKER_07

Poor girl. She's so big. Like Paul Bunyan, man.

SPEAKER_03

Do you have any idea what this will do to us? We're not supposed to know about makeup or periods or self-esteem issues. You're not supposed to see behind the curtain.

SPEAKER_06

But like I said, it's very sophomoric. What does Harlan say? I used I used all mine or something like that. Right. Some some ridiculous answer. And then also just as a running gag of Rosenbaum's character not being able to walk in heels. Oh god. And the men and stuff see him and they start laughing or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

You got a big ass. And he even starts to now go, Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I don't have a big ass. He's trying to do exercises.

SPEAKER_00

I know.

SPEAKER_06

Oh my god. So it's that whole thing about quote unquote air quotes relating to what women go through.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Now they see the light because they were they were part of this fret. And now they're starting to empathize and sympathize with women because they get treated like crap. Right. You know, I see you're my sister. You know. Yeah. But um it's like I said, there I don't want to give away too much of the movie either, because I think it's funny. I think it's worth watching. It's like I said, if you like you and I growing up, those porkies, all those 80s, you know, yeah, there's some gratuitous tit scenes, I'll say it.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. But this one I could say I'm not offended by it, but I could see how people would say, oh, this is this is we're beyond this now.

SPEAKER_00

But I'm just saying for the average person who's just looking to have a good laugh and just kind of likes that sophomore and something innocuous that's not like it like masterminds. Right. We're just trying to lighten it up here. Right. And you know, and I just you I remember you were telling me, I told you how I just discovered I used to go to movies all the time, and I saw this at the theater, you know, and I thought it was hilarious. And yeah, Barry Watson, because I did know him from I didn't watch the show, but you're like, oh yeah. And Michael Rosenbaum, I know him. Seventh Heaven or whatever. Yeah. So you're like, and this is their way of trying to transition from TV to movies. Yeah. And then unfortunately for me.

SPEAKER_06

When was this? 200 what? 2002, okay. That's I don't know. I mean, I guess it's 24 years ago.

SPEAKER_00

That's a long time.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. I mean, the thing that I'm referring to as far as like what I'm not offended by is there's a scene where the head of the fratern uh sorority what's her name or whatever? Oh, yeah. The blonde chick, whatever, and she's plays Leah. Leah. Oh yeah. With Harry Watson's character, and she's naked and technically quote unquote taken advantage of her or whatever. They don't have sex or anything, but it's like he should, I guess in real life, he should stop. Well, he shouldn't be doing any of this because real life, first of all, but you know, I'll play deceives her because she doesn't have her glasses.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Well, that the scene starts, he waits till late at night to take a shower because obviously he if he goes in there and the girls are gonna discover, oh, you know You're a man. Right. No, I'm amaphrodite. Right. But yeah, Leo walks in and she goes, I can't see without my glasses. She's right. She can see, but it's blurry, so she so he has to put it. But she knows it's him, but not him, but yeah. So yes.

SPEAKER_06

And then Do you mind if I just jump in there?

SPEAKER_00

I know, right? That doesn't and there's a lot of soap, and the way the soap that's strategic soap, yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Let's put it that way. Not for her though. So that's that's the uh that's the part we might get offended by. And I I would I would agree with them on that. I don't feel that way, but I I can see where they would be coming from.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that's what I'm saying when I present this as being a juvenile sophomore film. Don't expect it to be politically correct. Right, and that's why we were uh showing examples as Revenge of the Nerds and Portuguese on it, because it does have that element to it. But yeah, um like I said, I'm not trying to defend this movie, and I agree. I'm not again, it's just a light movie. Yes, there's things, and I'm not telling everybody to watch it, but if you can just excuse all that, not even make excuses, just realize that going into it.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, if it's not your thing, don't watch it. Right. If you're gonna if you're sensitive to politically correct stuff, this is not your thing. Right. But if you're can deal with that or you know you're older in our demographic or whatever, it's just a nice function. Right, and that's what it is. It's actually much tamer than some of the we grew up on. Oh god, yes. Some of that stuff was like, ooh. Yeah, there's a classic episode of It's Always Sunny where they make fun of the whole movies where the guy cuts a hole in the shower for the girl's showering, and they're like, Oh, you can't you can't do that. They're like all trying to let's party, let's party, and he does that. They're like, oh, that's no porkies, right? Where they pocket on you. Yeah, exactly. Right. So they can see you or whatever, and right the coaches in there or whatever for some reason.

SPEAKER_00

But this one has a message, remember? Has a message. It does, so that's that makes it better. Right? I mean, even when there's uh I'm gonna cut ahead here when they're because now the guys the guys and the girls from dog, I say boys, because they find a way to get to the ship because they end up it's not a they get away, they find that Oh, there's some kind of cruise, right? Yes.

SPEAKER_06

So they now oh, if you win some kind of fraternity contest or football game or something.

SPEAKER_00

Sororities play to get on to the ship. Then you get on the ship. And the tripies is who I was trying to remember. They're the good-looking fraternity.

SPEAKER_06

That's right. I almost forgot about them.

SPEAKER_00

But they play like uh football, uh tackle football.

SPEAKER_06

Is it no, is I thought it was flag, I thought that was the joke. Oh, well, they were tackle flag football, but they were tackling. Yeah, and the guy because uh Rosenown characters like, what? They're tackling whatever, because they jump on him, sorry, kick his ass. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And he has to go to the bench, whatever.

SPEAKER_06

I think he says, I thought this was touch football.

SPEAKER_00

Something like that, right. It looks like it's supposed to be, but no, but they're kicking ass. Right. Because the trip is they've they've won.

SPEAKER_06

They don't like the other women.

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah, because they bring them down.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, exactly. But the cheerleaders and the rich girls or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Sure. But I mean, even in that scene, there's a the uh wet t-shirt out of nowhere. And then what's his name? Adam goes, that's smart. I mean, uh But that's my point. The humor in it, that stuff, you know. I mean, it's yeah, it's I'm not gonna lie, made mainly for for guys, but I think it's still just a fun movie. And then like I said, we agree. If it ain't your cup of tea, then don't watch it.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's it's just as simple as that. Don't block me from watching it. I won't make you to watch it. Just like I'll let everyone just decide because these people made choices, they got paid good money to do that stuff. Right. And in real life, there are people who kind of live their life that way and they choose to do that. You can't like you judge in them too. Right. It's like you're gonna force them not to do crazy shit that they want to do. So everyone just like go to their neutral corner and just relax. You want to enjoy. Right. Don't fuck it up for anybody else. But yeah, but just clear warning, this is not politically correct. This one's not at all.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So yes, we both agree. Could it get made today? Yes and no. I mean, it depends. I mean, if you want to just make again a sophomore kind of humor. I mean, I don't see a pro I mean.

SPEAKER_06

Well, they'd have to cut out those scenes. I don't think they would make those. I could be wrong. We don't know unless Jennifer Lawrence did that movie where she was naked and right. That's what I'm saying. I guess it's different because it's a woman doing it. I don't know. It just So there you go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. You kind of answered your own question. Right. In a sense. I mean, if both actors and actresses agree to it, then you know.

SPEAKER_06

Right. Yeah. Like I said, they're not being exploited. I mean, as far as I know.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_06

I mean So they can always say, No, I don't want this role and go do Shakespeare.

SPEAKER_00

You just fuck prove my point, because they did try it with Jennifer Lawrence, and that was only what two years ago?

SPEAKER_06

It wasn't that long ago, yeah. Yeah, she was thinking a lot. And then that other one too, the one the serious one where she was a Russian something or other. They had some random sex scenes. Red Sparrow. Is that what it was? I think it was. A lot of sex scenes for no reason. Right.

SPEAKER_00

So I guess it just depends on the women's. I guess I stand I uh stick my claim. You can make these companies.

SPEAKER_06

You can make these companies now. You just gotta, you know, say it with your chest, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, for women. Have the right person behind you. Uh who knows? Right. Maybe the right celebrity to do it. Who says, you know what? It's empowering. Sure. But yeah, uh as they played this touch football, as I air quote. Yeah. Um, the dogs do get on, but then as we get to the ship, they don't get to they do not make it. The tries beat the game.

SPEAKER_06

I don't remember, did they win the game?

SPEAKER_00

The dogs did.

SPEAKER_06

Right, because they have the guys.

SPEAKER_00

Well, no, they actually won because the one the one big woman, yeah. She goes, What'd you say to me?

SPEAKER_06

That's right, that's right. The guys were kind of useless. They were getting their ass kicked.

SPEAKER_00

Well, Roberta, our doofer, gets out right away. Right. Right.

SPEAKER_06

And Rosenman was like a quarterback or something. Right. Like, he's the last one, but yeah. Yeah. But then the one really big woman who's like outcast from the cheerleader set or whatever. So she what'd you call me? Oh, I thought she's chasing the ref. I know she's running in for the touchdown, and the ref's running with her in front of her, and you start leaning toward him to tackle him. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

It's funny. But yeah, they end up I mean, the climax, I'm not gonna ruin it, but they the tries are on the ship and the dogs they find another way to get on, and then that's when you get your resolution. Resolution, yeah. So we're not gonna ruin that. Yeah. Um, there's again, there's some one-liners in there, obviously, male jokes in regards to women. Dave's dad's there and the Spence's dad's on the ship, or they're all on there and they're all wheelie and dealing.

SPEAKER_06

They never you see like they never grow up. So they're like in their 50s or whatever, they're still like, dog, you know, dog catcher. Dog catcher. Yeah, they're like 50-year-old dudes, you know, harassing these 20-somethings or whatever. Throw the net over or whatever. Oh my god. So yeah, but it's but with these movies and things like that, it's supposed to be like they're the butt of the joke. They're not supposed to be taken seriously, like where you can be offended, like, oh, look at them too. Like they're clearly the assholes in this.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's it. And that's good. That's the point of the movie. And that's what it shows, right? That that empowerment for women that see, some men are always just they're yeah, they never grow up. Right. But Dave is trying to. I'm not gonna give away, but he's trying to he now feels empowered since he's been in the sorority. Right.

SPEAKER_06

Since he spent all this time with the women, now he sees life kind of the way they see it. Oh, that's not really a realistic thing, but Yes. It is that's why I had my criticism. And it's not even really a criticism, it's just kind of a joke, really. Right. But my thing is like at the end, they kind of amend their feelings toward the way they've treated women. Let's put it that way. Um, especially Rosenbaum, right? Right. Because Rosenbaum has the running gag where the guys catcall him from the car, fat ass, and there's just falls down or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

And there's other and women catcall him too. Right. And then there's that one dude that's in the fret that he tries to mentor, right? Oh, the little kid or whatever? Yeah. Yeah, and then he's his little brother. And then when he's dressed as Adina. Yeah. I don't want to give that away, but that whole thing. Oh my god. But it's it's awful, but it's kind of sadly true a lot of the desperation, folks.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, you got it's the whole thing of like the movies we grew up in, it was always like getting laid. That was the whole thing. Right. And this guy fixed that whole thing. Right. It's very much in that paradigm. So again, you know, it is what it is. I I find it humorous. Oh god. You know, it did I don't take it that seriously.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you hadn't seen it until I recommended it.

SPEAKER_06

I hadn't seen it, but I it wasn't like something I I wasn't prepared for because it is a throwback to those type of movies. And I I guess when I say throwback, because I don't know when those movies stopped being made, but it seems like they were stopped by 2002. That seems kind of late in the game, right? Uh yes and no. I mean, we were those type of like raunchy still get laid movies. Really, they were still doing 2002? Here and I remember them porkies is like what 70? No, it was early 80s. Yeah, 80. So 20 years later they're still doing it?

SPEAKER_00

Trying. Okay. Well, the reception, the film was panned by critics, obviously, on Rotten Tomatoes. It has an approval rating of 12% based on 65 reviews. Oh. The website's consensus, a sloppy frat boy movie, sorority boys, offers up a parade of gross-out gags and sex jokes while insult salty and uh ogling women, whatever. Haters. The film barely made back it was budgeted at 12 million, it barely made its budget back. It made like 517,408 on top of the twelve. Um, but Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a core of a B saying that there are moments of real funniness and this smarter than anticipated goof fest. Yeah. So, you know, hey. There's it, there is some life there at the tunnel. Not everybody again, someone just appreciated for what it was and not trying to overcritically.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, what are you basing your review on? Like what's the what's the median standard? Like, you know, because for a movie like this, it's actually pretty good. If you're comparing it to, you know, I don't know, Kramer versus Kramer or something, then maybe it's not so good, but you shouldn't be comparing it to that, frankly. So I yeah, I'm surprised, but that's really low. 12%. Wow, Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, yeah, I don't uh rotten tomatoes and me, we don't get along. I don't really care for them.

SPEAKER_06

I mean, I can see, you know, I don't know. I think there are points points to it that are really silly.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, I'm not disagreeing with that at all.

SPEAKER_06

Over the top, but I like that sometimes.

SPEAKER_00

But I like that sometimes. That doesn't bother me.

SPEAKER_06

Exactly. You just have to kind of be in the right headspace for it or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Like I said, budget 12 and made 12.5. So and that and in Hollywood that's a loss. That's enough to make uh sequel, right?

SPEAKER_06

Sorority sorority boys too.

SPEAKER_00

Speaking of which personal wasn't there one with uh Anna Ferris, the house bunny kind of similar where she was a Playboy model and she went Yeah, but it wasn't I know, but that was more female.

SPEAKER_06

But it was more not empowering, but more politically correct, let's put it that way.

SPEAKER_00

Right, and it bleed more with women and yeah, right. But anyway, I think, like for me, thumbs up. Yeah, thumbs up. I like I said, I think we both I grew up in movies like this. Yeah, so and again, I'm not trying to diminish anybody. If it's not for you, don't watch it. But for everybody else, like I said, we both enjoyed it. I think you'll have a good time too. Yeah. Sometimes it's just good just to escape.

SPEAKER_06

I wouldn't say hidden gym, that might be going too far, but no, I had not even heard of this movie until you mentioned it. And when you said sorority boys when we were in the car, I was like, I was just drawing a complete blank. I have no idea what that what what that was. And then when I got inside, I looked it up. The premise was like, oh, dude's dressing up like women. Okay. And then I watched, it's like, okay, that wasn't that was pretty decent. Right. I mean, and also you you you pitched it with Harlan Williams, and he's always Yes. He's always gonna be funny. He's never not gonna be funny, right? Because I just don't think he has it in him to not be. Uh and he was funny in this. He's a little he's more of a side character, as well. Uh I think Rosenbaum and Watson's as they're like, they're more of the focus of the movie. They were so um, but that said, I mean, right that Rosenbaum did great. The whole the whole thing about, like I said, if you were if a man was really dressing up like a woman trying to pretend to be a woman, yes, you would fall in heels a lot. Uh a lot of the stuff he did was like that's totally true. That's what would really happen if you were trying to dress like a woman. Yeah. And I appreciated that part of it at least, because you know, you know, you don't um you don't see that with other new type of uh you know genre busting movies or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_06

So anyway, yeah, I thought it was great.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's uh are we gonna for next week or are we gonna do another we are doing another comedy, right?

SPEAKER_06

Uh yeah, maybe we can play it by ear. I mean, I um whatever we want to do, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean we'll decide.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I I think I'm still in the comedy mood. I think there's still some that I'd like to explore.

SPEAKER_00

That's cool.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Um, but at some point, yeah, we can get back to some some something more serious. Why so serious? Why so serious? Maybe not so serious as like Hamlet or anything like that, but you know, just a regular movie. Just a regular movie that I don't want to kill myself after I watch it.

SPEAKER_00

You know? Right. But yeah, that like I said, I think these were two fun movies to watch. And yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Where did you see sorority voice?

SPEAKER_00

I'm trying to remember. Uh you don't own it, right? I do own it.

SPEAKER_06

Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_00

It's on it's on Amazon for those.

SPEAKER_06

But yeah, I watched it on Amazon.

SPEAKER_00

But yes, I I own both movies.

SPEAKER_06

I would say if you like this, you could watch Revenge of the Nerds. You'd be right at home with that.

SPEAKER_00

Porkies, all those kind of teenage.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, even like Fast Times. I mean, Fast Times will be better.

SPEAKER_06

Fast Times of Ridge Maha, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's a classic.

SPEAKER_06

Yes, classic movie. And that's all, I guess. All right, until next time. Uh, get off my property, you kids.

SPEAKER_00
