Welcome back to another weekly crunch.
SPEAKER_01Today we have several shows to discuss. Three shows we finished entirely and will give our final time crunch critic rating, plus two shows we just started and we'll share our initial impressions on.
SPEAKER_00With so much to cover, we're going to skip our Behind Rewind segment this week to keep things timely the way we like it.
SPEAKER_01Boo.
SPEAKER_00You want it to be long? You want a long episode? Well we'll be we'll we'll make sure to do a be kind rewind segment next week, okay? All right.
SPEAKER_01Do you want me to run point on this intro?
SPEAKER_00Only if you can guarantee maximum pleasure.
SPEAKER_01That was kind of a hack.
SPEAKER_00Cape Fear. The Burroughs? Yep. Welcome to Time Crunched Critics.
SPEAKER_01We're two TV lovers who watch a little too much TV, so you don't have to.
SPEAKER_00We're here to give you our honest reviews on what's a worthwhile watch and what you can safely skip.
SPEAKER_01Because we know what it's like to be crunched for time.
SPEAKER_00Alright, the first show that we are going to review today is Running Point. Season one was released sometime last year. I can't quite remember. We watched it all. But recently, season two was released, and we actually watched and finished it all a few weeks ago. And I simply forgot to add it to our outline to discuss. So whoops. Sorry for the delayed review, but you know, better late than never, I guess.
SPEAKER_01Running Point is a Netflix sports comedy series starring Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, who unexpectedly becomes president of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball team after her brother's scandal. The show follows Isla as she navigates leadership, family dynamics, and sexism in the sports world, blending humor with family drama. Jennifer, what are your thoughts on Running Point?
SPEAKER_00I thought Running Point was fine. When I initially started watching it, it kind of felt like a mix of succession and Ted Lasso because of the succession. It was it was like succession because of like the family dynasty and the drama and like what which sibling is gonna inherit the family business and run it, and they all kind of wanna do it. And then it was kind of like Ted Lasso because it's a sports team and there's a lot of like humor and cheesiness in it too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It has elements of it, like the plot, you know what I mean, and how it's set up. But overall, it's like it's doing its own thing. I don't know. I guess the tone felt maybe a little inconsistent at times. Like sometimes I do feel like it is trying to be kind of deep and emotional. And Kate Hudson is just such a great actress, and she can really get dramatic and deep. There was some family stuff that felt deep sometimes, but then it was also like a joke and not very deep and kind of like a throwaway thing. And then sometimes it was just really comedic, slapsticky, kind of like weird character quirks and cheesy jokes. And then there was like this kind of romance side and almost like a soap opera vibe. Like it just kind of had a lot of things going on. It was in a lot of lanes for me. Not saying that that was bad. I'm just saying that that's kind of what it was. And I don't know, it was fine. It's it's glossy, it's lighthearted, it's kind of funny, it's kind of cheesy. I thought it was well paced and it was like undemanding, but it like in a good way, like very good show to do my crochet projects during or like scroll on my phone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's definitely not a critical thinking show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's like enjoyable background TV. You know, it's like we don't have cable anymore, but back in the day when you used to have cable and you throw on a show on USA or something just while you were like doing stuff. That's kind of how I feel this one was. But I mean, you but but it was fine. It was, you know, I think the ensemble was solid. I didn't love every character and every character choice, but I mostly liked the dynamic of it. Yeah, I think it was a pleasant watch. It's a show that's kind of easy to forget once it's over. In fact, I forgot that we watched it.
SPEAKER_01That's what the writers want.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't feel like it's an essential show, but you know, I enjoyed it. And there it was renewed for a season three, and I'll totally watch it. A season three.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, people seem to people like it, yeah.
SPEAKER_00For sure, I for sure I would. Um, I'm not like in a huge rush. I think the biggest bright spot or like the glow of the whole show is just Kate Hudson. I just think she's a gem.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's it's that family for you, right?
SPEAKER_00I guess. I mean, will they adopt me? Wait, the Hudson's and Russell's? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You need a new sister? I feel like half the shows you talk about have one of one of them in there.
SPEAKER_00I love you all.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, I I kind of agree. I mean, when I first saw it, I didn't have very high expectations, but it's it's okay. Like it's a it's it's very it's an easy watch, right? It's watchable. I think I think it does go across a couple different genres, but it it doesn't like it's not what when it when it starts being a little bit too much comedy, then it gets a little bit more into the drama side. When it starts getting a little bit more dramedy, then it adds more comedy. So it's kind of balancing them out, but it doesn't like ex excel at any of those, but it's just like it's just enough of each kind of genre to keep you entertained, and I think it that's its main job. It's not to leave this last impression, it's just to like, you know, it's just it's just entertaining for this season, you know. Throw it on.
SPEAKER_00This one was by Mindy K K League. How do you say her name? K-Ling? Mindy Kaylee. Oh, really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Interesting.
SPEAKER_00And I like her stuff. I mean, and it kind of shows. I mean, obviously, she wrote it with other people, but just saying that, I don't know if people like her style, but if you do, you might like to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess I didn't, I had no idea. Um, I mean, I don't really know her other things, it's uh I just know her from the office, obviously.
SPEAKER_00Do you think season two was better than season one of Running Point?
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, they're about the same.
SPEAKER_00I felt like they were the same too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I kind of like the sports aspect to it, but I guess you're right. Like, Ket, I was trying to think of what other show did that, and it's like obviously Ted Lasso. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you don't have to like be a huge fan of basketball or understand it at all. This is not, this is it's not about basketball. I mean, it is and it isn't, right?
SPEAKER_01I actually wonder sometimes if with both those shows, if for people that are true fans of either one of those sports, like do they like these that like have hints of basketball but aren't really about basketball?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I wonder. I don't know. I don't know, because I'm I mean I don't know, because I'm not them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I certainly like my my local sports teams, but uh, you know, I'm not I'm not a huge uh sports guy either.
SPEAKER_00What is your overall time crunch critic rating on season two? A running.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna say I'm gonna say a six.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Watchable but forgettable. That's right. Inconsistent.
SPEAKER_01That's right. I think it's one of those things where you you know what the show's gonna be about after watching the first episode. Yeah. So if that's your type of show, like there's two seasons of it for you. So yeah, you know, if not, then uh, you know, just just forget about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'm gonna give it a six as well for overall, like how I enjoyed it, but I do think this is a great, lighthearted, easy, throw it on. You'll find enjoyment in it. I think anyone will. Okay, the next show that we're going to review is the fifth and final season of Hacks. Oh, I know my heart. I am so sad that this show is over, but man, I am so happy it existed. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite shows. I will put it on that list. Wow. Yeah, I would highly recommend this show. Anyone who is looking for a new show, I really think you should go watch Hacks. It's on HBO. And I just want to say, EB, I know you're listening. I promise we're not spoiling anything, okay? I promise.
SPEAKER_01Hacks follows Deborah Vance, Gene Smart, a stand-up comedian, and her comedy writer Ava Daniels, Hannah Einbinder, as they navigate the evolving dynamics of their professional partnership and personalizes with the contemporary comedy in industry. The series concluded with five seasons and 47 episodes. Jennifer, what did you think of the final season of Hacks?
SPEAKER_00I thought the final season of Hacks was really strong and honestly a very satisfying ending for one of my favorite shows. I really loved the ending specifically, like the last episode. I what I loved it most is that it just it felt sharp and funny, but it also gave the Deborah and Ava relationship the emotional payoff that it deserved. I think the show has always been at its best when it balances really biting comedy with real vulnerability. And I think that this season pulled that off again. I think every season's really good. I think this is a show that got better and better. I think maybe for this season, though, like if I had one criticism, I do think that there were some moments or maybe some episodes that felt like a little um lighter or sillier than the show when it's at its very best. Like they were just kind of like what you might call filler episodes, like just some goofy thing that was happening just to like have an episode, not necessarily to like push the story and sure um you know you know I don't want to say specifically, but I mean I had some of that, but I enjoy that because I love this show so much, so it's still enjoyable to me. But I just feel like more than anything, it just really felt like a confident, well-earned farewell. And and I think Gene Smart and Hannah Einbinder are definitely absolute forces. I think this is an ensemble, this is a fantastic ensemble, and the biggest glow of the show is the writing. I just it's just a standout, brilliantly written show, and I loved every every episode. What did you think?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I agree that I really liked the finale. I because like you said, the show always kind of blends the the comedy with some vulnerability, right? Yeah, and so you know, again, no spoilers, but as the show is winding down, get into the last couple episodes, like you know, they're they're they're building up to a very positive thing, and then something negative happens, and then they kind of fix that, and it's like, okay, this is all gonna just be all rainbows, they're gonna see all the old cast members and they're gonna call it a day. But but no, they introduced like an another kind of negative, real life, vulnerable twist, and then found a way to use comedy and friendship to still have a happy ending.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And it was it was nice.
SPEAKER_00They're just clever at writing different things in to keep you kind of on your toes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_00It's like unpredictable and funny and heartwarming. I just love it. It's it's you know, it's an older woman and a younger woman from very different walks of life with very different interpretations of the world and experiences, having to work together, so they're butting heads, but they're also growing a fondness for each other. It's really like it's a love story at its core, like a platonic love story, but it's just so sweet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think they're hilarious, right? And they all have you know, they all have low moments, even though you know, and from different walks of life, but they help themselves through that and they help each other grow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And that growth is, you know, probably the most interesting part of the story.
SPEAKER_00And the side the side characters have their own growth and their own journeys too. I mean, the side characters are great.
SPEAKER_01Well, some I feel are just the comedic relief, but you know.
SPEAKER_00But still, I just think overall, I think hacks on HBO, if you haven't already watched it, you should definitely go check it out. It's a great comedy that will also make you feel things, and it's just it's well written. It's really well acted. It's produced, it's well produced. I mean, literally, it's uh it's just a glowing show. I love it. Yeah. What is your time crunch critic rating on Hacks season five?
SPEAKER_01I'm going to give it an eight and a half.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna give it a nine. For a show with five seasons, you know, it's I I think it's it's impressive because shows tend to some for the most part, I feel like they get a little worse.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00They maybe get a little bit better at first and then a little bit worse. And this one, to me, I really think hacks just continued to deliver.
SPEAKER_01This one had a comp it seemed like a complete story to tell, and they told it.
SPEAKER_00All right. The final show that we are going to review in full today is The Burrows. We talked about this show on our last episode, I think, after we had watched like four episodes maybe. Now we are here to give you our final time crunch trading on the Burroughs.
SPEAKER_01For those who need a reminder, the Burroughs is a sci-fi mystery series on Netflix. It follows a misfit crew of retirees living in a seemingly idyllic New Mexico retirement community who band together to battle a supernatural underground threat that is attempting to steal their time. Jennifer, what are your thoughts?
SPEAKER_00I was really starting to dig the burrows after episode four, I think. I think it was episode four, and then I started to dig it a little less, I think, after that. Uh I don't know. There was definitely elements that I really liked. I love the whole sci-fi adventure with the secret tunnels and monsters, and I thought the idea of the group of senior citizens battling the monsters like versus kids or teens or something, that was genuinely fun. I think a part of me wanted it to be a little bit more serious, maybe in the way that stranger things can be, even though that show is also goofy and cheesy at times. I don't know. Here, some of the acting felt a little uneven, maybe for me, and eventually the plot started to get a little too goofy in a way that didn't totally work for the way that I wanted it to be. That said, I still really enjoyed it, and I would absolutely recommend it to people who like sci-fi shows with a comedic edge and veteran actors. Honestly, it kind of almost feels like only murders in the building, but make it sci-fi. I think it has that feel to it. Um, and it hasn't been renewed. I looked it up. It has not been renewed for a second season yet, but I would definitely watch another season if they do make one.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'm wondering what yeah.
SPEAKER_00The the showrunners apparently did say that they have a three-season interesting uh like arc planned or something. And I mean this season for people who like things to wrap up, this season wrapped up, like the antagonist was found and you know, all the things, but there was a little bit of a cliffhanger-y thing that happens at the end, kind of like Stranger Things season one, if you will. And so, like it could keep going and they could build off of it, but also if it wraps, like this is one season that you could watch and be like feel good about it wrapping. Overall, I think I had fun watching it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, it was it was a fun show, but I do ag agree that I liked it a little bit less, exactly like you said, since the last time we talked about it on this yeah uh podcast. And yeah, I don't know what happened. I think it just kind of went in the wrong direction for me.
SPEAKER_00Same. It got a little too like I don't know, goofy, not right, scary or something. I don't know. It was yeah.
SPEAKER_01And in in a lot of ways, I guess if I'm if I'm thinking about the Stranger Things comparison, like I Stranger Things had a lot of nostalgia throwbacks that I really enjoyed. And I feel like this show had some of that going early on, and then it kind of lost that magic for me after a while.
SPEAKER_00So I do think like Stranger Things to me had the 80s nostalgia because it was set in the 80s, it looked like the 80s, it made you remember the 80s, and this one, the Burrows, it's set in the now, but the the the sci-fi elements and like the plot is very 80s, like the plot and the the way that it was like the antagonist and all the things and the acting choices and just how they portrayed some of the things was very much like this is an 80s movie, but made now. So it had that.
SPEAKER_01You're right that The Stranger Things, you know, took place in those decades, and so it you know it had some of that built in. Well, not not only. I mean, even the even the intro, just and like uh um just a lot of the you know the the music and everything, it just it was very 80s. The Burroughs I I guess I I can't I guess I was looking for it more and I never never really got it. Um it was like yeah, I guess some of the sci-fi elements were more 80s-like, but yeah not in like a good way, yeah. I guess it didn't do it in a way that brought me back to those types of movies, it just did it in kind of like a disappointment.
SPEAKER_00Did it in a way that I'm like, I'm so glad we've come so far. You're right. You know what I mean? Um, I do think the veteran cast kind of had the I mean, you have Gina Davis and a few um Bill Putman, is that his name, and some other people that you would recognize, like, oh yeah, these were some actors from a while ago. So you have that too, but yeah. Would you watch a season two if they get renewed for one?
SPEAKER_01Uh slowly. I I wouldn't say I'm like eagerly waiting for it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But if I see it on one day, maybe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I would definitely watch a season two, but yeah, I don't have to like run, run to do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're a Stranger Things, you know.
SPEAKER_00I Oh, Stranger Things, I was like counting down the minutes of when the next season would come out. Yeah, they're two very different shows, but similar elements for sure. What is your time crunched critic rating on the Burroughs complete season one?
SPEAKER_01I'll say five and a half. Um I I enjoyed it. I I don't know if it's gonna be up there in my favorite shows of the year, but it's uh, you know, I I think I'm gonna agree with you on the five and a half.
SPEAKER_00You know, I think it's kind of again, it's kind of this watchable but forgettable area and kind of inconsistent. I think some of the yeah, some of the acting and the dialogue and the 80s vibe that I didn't appreciate. I wanted a different 80s vibe.
SPEAKER_01I think it was nice to see though the the older generation as like the action heroes. For sure.
SPEAKER_00That was like that's the biggest glow is just the change up of who the heroes are and just like a different viewpoint and everything. That was for sure. Like that that was you that was what was unique about this, and I appreciated that for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Should we move on?
SPEAKER_01Definitely.
SPEAKER_00All right, so that was it for all the shows that we finished, and now we are just gonna touch base on two shows that we just started watching, and we wanted to give y'all our first impressions and let you know a little bit about them so you can decide if it sounds like a show you want to start. The first show we'll talk about is Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. This one is on Apple TV, and so far there are four out of ten episodes available to watch.
SPEAKER_01The story follows Paula, a newly divorced frazzled mother and magazine fact-checker who is dealing with a tense custody battle and an escalating identity crisis. Seeking an outlet, she engages with Trevor, a sweet-faced camboy. During one of their sessions, Paula watches in horror as Trevor is violently attacked and held for ransom. When the police dismiss her claims, Paula uses her investigative skills and a hockey stick to get to the bottom of the crime, plunging herself into a web of blackmail, corporate conspiracy, and murder.
SPEAKER_00I love how it's like, and a hockey stick. That's kind of random.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um it is a unique thing to throw in there.
SPEAKER_00So I'm actually I'm actually pretty into maximum pleasure guaranteed so far. It's definitely messy. It's in a but in a way that I kind of enjoy. It feels like it's twisty and strange and it's a little unpredictable, and I can like feel the tension. I think the lead is doing a really great job. That actress. I think she's actually probably the biggest strength. I think that she's like a smart but frazzled and compelling. She's grounded, she's a little frustrating, but you also like sympathize for her. I don't know. I think I think it's I think it works. I also like the dark comedy thriller vibe. Obviously, this is in my wheelhouse. It moves fast and it's entertaining. It definitely kept me watching, like I was I was invested in watching it and not doing my crochet project or anything. Like I was I was into it. Yeah, overall, I think I'm enjoying I'm enjoying it so far. I think if you like weird, twisty thrillers with a strong lead, and it's like slight in a slightly unhinged energy, maybe I I'd say this one is worth trying.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, again, I this is a show I wasn't sure what to make of it. Yeah, I mean, it's got the Camboy thing, which reminded me of Margot's Got Money problem, and it's like, well, God, that seems to be a central theme these days. I don't know. But I do find myself enjoying it. And I think one thing that this show does well that always annoys me about these, you know, thrillers who done it, you know, murder mysteries that we like to watch, is that you know, oftentimes there's a situation where like that doesn't need to happen because they didn't just come like go to the cops.
SPEAKER_00Yes, where they just are so stupid and this show their decisions, yeah, they're just done with their decision.
SPEAKER_01But this show doesn't do that. This show, like, there's been multiple times where you know they go directly to the cops, and a couple times where the detective, who I also really enjoy in this show, yeah, she's good, you know, asks her probing questions about, you know, were you there on the night, or or you know, what about this incident? And you know, rather than hide it or you know, have that drag on as some big secret, she just gets right to it. She's like, I was there, yeah, you know, yeah, this happened. Um, you know, them's the facts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're doing a show based on all the information. No one's hiding like a secret. It's just this is the situation kind of thing. Cards are on the table. Yeah, it's yeah, they are doing it w at well.
SPEAKER_01I think. And I think that's been fun because you know, now you can't build a story around this hidden information, right? It's it's just all all there. Um, and I think I think that's refreshing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree with you on that. I'm excited to keep watching. Yeah. We'll see what happens. We have uh like I think we've only watched what we we watched four episodes, so six more to go. We'll see how it wraps up. Should we move on?
SPEAKER_01Let's do it.
SPEAKER_00All right. The other show that we started watching recently is Cape Fear. This is a limited series on Apple TV. There are currently two episodes out, and there will be ten in total.
SPEAKER_01The IMDB summary is as follows: A happily married couple faces a growing threat when a notorious killer from their past, Max Katie, is released from prison and seeks revenge.
SPEAKER_00I'm definitely intrigued by Cape Fear so far. I think it feels dark and stylish and tense in a way that just really works for me. I think Javier Bardem is such a huge part of why it's working. He's magnetic and unsettling in exactly the way that you need this character to be for this type of story and like what they're telling. The whole show has a very like southern gothic psychological thriller vibe that is fun to watch and it's like aesthetically pleasing. There's some stylistic choices with the camera work and the music and stuff that definitely feels like a old Martin Scorsese kind of type film. I also like I so I watched Cape Fear, the movie. There's like there's a movie from 1991-ish or 1992, something like that. So Robert De Niro was the main guy who got released from prison, and I don't remember the movie super specifically, but I can tell that the show is different from the movie. This show has the the family has more kids in the movie. There was only one kid, it was a daughter. Um, the crime is different, the dynamic, like the the wife's job is different. Like there's things that are different, and then they're modernizing it. We have the internet and how he's using the internet to intrude on this family. You didn't have that in 1991.
SPEAKER_01And or at least it was slower.
SPEAKER_00It's it's a similar story, but it's different. It's different. They're doing different things, so it's not just like a straight up remake. Like it feels kind of new from what I remember. So that so that's good. Yeah, I think I think this one's worth checking out if if you like that kind of thing. I mean, my biggest glow so far is probably the stylish camera work. And my biggest grow so far is Amy Adams over the top southern accent. I can I can do without that fake accent.
SPEAKER_01That comes and goes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That comes and goes. It came on really strong.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Amy Adams is a remarkable actress. I was like, why are you talking like this?
SPEAKER_01Just takes away from it. But only for a few minutes.
SPEAKER_00I really have a hard time with bad accents, if y'all haven't noticed. It really can take me out. What do you think so far?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I think I agree with you on the glow. It's you know, the I I like the style. Right? And the kind of camera work. I don't know if I'm 100% hooked on the story yet. I I don't think I watched the movie growing up. I I could be wrong about that, but I'm certainly not gonna.
SPEAKER_00You probably didn't watch it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm certainly not gonna go back and watch it now since we're you know in the middle of the show. You know, as someone who doesn't know where it's gonna go, like I don't know if I'm as hooked as something like a Widow's Bay, like quite yet. Yeah, but I do like the style. I think that's definitely unique and refreshing. And the yeah, the settings are very gorgeous. Yeah. Um I'm kind of waiting to see.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I think I think there are there's parts of it that feel kind of long. Like I was kind of like, okay, okay, but like overall, I am into it and I'm I'm excited to see where it goes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_00And hopefully it doesn't get too convoluted. I hate when things get too convoluted, and I'm like, wait, what, what? So far, so good. All right, so that is a wrap on all of the shows that we watched recently. A few that we finished, some that we just started. Mike, do you have any shows that you're looking forward to this week and watching?
SPEAKER_01Ooh, well, um, the new House of Dragon doesn't come out for two weeks. Oh, I mean, Widow's Bay for sure.
SPEAKER_00Widows Bay is really great. We're really excited.
SPEAKER_01Is it wrapping up this week?
SPEAKER_00No, I don't think so. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Widow's Bay and then the two we just talked about, I think. Yeah. But I think most mostly Widows Bay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'm excited for the next episode of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed for sure. I'm I'm ready to see what happens there. Yeah. Last one ended on a little bit of a cliffhanger.
SPEAKER_01This the story has gone to a point where it's like it's things are coming to a head, and I'd be interested to see how this plays out here. There's so much tension. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00What's gonna happen?
SPEAKER_01Give me that hockey stick.
SPEAKER_00Yes. All right. Well, until next time, happy watching.
SPEAKER_01Bye bye.
