throne room and saw that God is holy, that he is other, that he is completely set apart from anything that we can even comprehend or know. 00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:50.000 And then uh, you know, last week we sat in the ashes of Jerusalem and learned that God is faithful, that he never changes and he never fails. 00:00:50.399 --> 00:01:01.759 And uh both of those are enormous truths about who God is and how he works and how he is working here on this earth, and stuff that we can't fully comprehend. 00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:09.840 And we talked uh, you know, the first week about things that we share with God, attributes that we share with God, and then attributes that we also do not share with him. 00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:25.280 And, you know, today we're going to uh uh understand that uh that this attribute that we know who uh God is is getting closer and closer to uh being more like us. 00:01:25.439 --> 00:01:32.000 And uh and what I mean by that is we have attributes that are we 00:07:42.079 You discern my thoughts from afar, you search up my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:50.319 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it all together. 00:07:50.560 --> 00:08:02.639 Now I'm going to stop right there because I want to slow down here and look at a couple words that are in the Hebrew language, the original language that this was written in, uh, because the first one is the word for searched. 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:04.319 You searched me. 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:06.240 You have searched me and known me. 00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:17.040 That word search is chakhar, which uh means to search out, to examine, to dig into, to explore thoroughly. 00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:21.360 This is a mining word more than it is a searching word. 00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:26.079 It's used in the Old Testament for digging into the earth to find what's buried in it. 00:08:26.319 --> 00:08:29.600 This isn't a searching for your keys kind of word. 00:08:29.839 --> 00:08:34.159 This is a, I need to examine this, I need to get down deep into this thing. 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:39.200 It's the word for exploring a land, investigating a matter, getting all the way to the bottom of something. 00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:45.840 So verse one isn't saying God glanced at you or mildly searched for you. 00:08:46.080 --> 00:08:53.200 It is saying that when you know when he has mining for you, he is searching for you diligently. 00:08:53.360 --> 00:08:58.399 He has gone down through every single layer to search who you are. 00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:03.840 And then comes a second word, the one the whole message uh rests on. 00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:04.559 Yada. 00:09:05.840 --> 00:09:10.960 Yada means to know personally, experientially, relationally. 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:14.879 It's not a word for knowing a fact. 00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:16.879 It's the word for knowing a person. 00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:22.159 It's the word scripture uses for the deepest intimacy between a husband and a wife. 00:09:22.320 --> 00:09:29.279 It's the word God uses in Amos when he says to Israel, You have only have I known of all the families of the earth. 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:33.440 Which obviously doesn't mean God had no information about other nations. 00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:38.639 It means you are the ones I have loved and bound myself to. 00:09:40.159 --> 00:09:41.759 God doesn't know facts about you. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:44.559 In Hebrew, he yadaz you. 00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:55.840 So when David says, You have searched me and you have known me, he is not describing a God with a very large database. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:10:01.679 He is describing a God who has dug all the way down into his very soul. 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:07.519 And the knowing that results is the knowing of intimacy, not the knowing of surveillance. 00:10:07.759 --> 00:10:14.799 It's the knowing about how you work, what's going on in your mind, what what what what do you love, what what makes you unique. 00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:16.559 You know, that's the difference. 00:10:16.720 --> 00:10:19.919 Uh, you know, a stalker knows facts about you, okay? 00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:37.679 Uh a spouse knows who you are and how you work, and what's going to um, you know, get get you going, what's what's going to help you uh motivate you, what's going to get you to, you know, really kind of be a better you for other people. 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:39.919 God is not the first one. 00:10:40.159 --> 00:10:47.120 He is infinitely the you know the the the one who is always going to know you. 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:56.399 He is uh the the the the spouse that you know that you're a part of is going to know you here in 00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:31.759 Before I formed you, I knew you personally, intimately, relationally. 00:12:32.559 --> 00:12:37.679 This matters enormously for how you understand your own worth. 00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:53.600 Because most of us build our sense of value on what we produce, what we do, how we manage it, what we what we perform, and how we how we uh what that looks like, what we accomplish, what we contribute, how useful we can be. 00:12:53.840 --> 00:12:57.200 We have a lot of worth come from what we think about ourselves. 00:12:57.519 --> 00:13:02.720 But God knew you and we had a big bucket of it, there'd be a lot more, but that there's about a million in here. 00:14:19.200 --> 00:14:27.840 So if you tried to, and it's very difficult to do, just pull up one single 00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:26.559 If you go stand at Park Point, you know, you're going to and look down at the shorelines as far as you can see, and then remember that's one lake in one single state. David uses. 00:15:47.200 --> 00:15:51.039 He says, How precious to me are your thoughts. 00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:53.440 These are not neutral thoughts. 00:15:53.840 --> 00:15:56.240 They are not a running tally of your failures. 00:15:56.399 --> 00:16:01.759 The word carries the sense of something weighty, costly, valuable, like treasure. 00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:05.120 The thoughts he has for you are treasures. 00:16:05.600 --> 00:16:11.440 God is not thinking about the way that, you know, uh thinking about you the way an auditor thinks about, you know, a file. 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:16.080 He's thinking about the way that a parent thinks about their child. 00:16:16.879 --> 00:16:22.720 And then David ends with what might be my favorite line in this whole psalm. 00:16:23.360 --> 00:16:28.879 It says, I awake and I am still with you. 00:16:29.679 --> 00:16:31.360 I'm awake and I am still with you. 00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:36.559 Meaning, you know, I uh David fell asleep and God was still thinking about him. 00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:40.720 I woke up and he had not stopped. 00:16:41.039 --> 00:16:46.799 You have never once had a moment in your entire life when God was not thinking of you with his love. 00:16:48.320 --> 00:17:01.759 Now, if we go into the New Testament, which is where we find Jesus, in this New Testament, we have to think about, okay, what does that mean for God to know us if Jesus is there and understanding how we can know him more? 00:17:02.240 --> 00:17:08.400 In uh the the Greek New Testament uh is is uh is has a word for it as well. 00:17:08.480 --> 00:17:13.039 It's gnosko, to know by experience and relationship. 00:17:13.279 --> 00:17:15.839 It's the the the Greek cousin of the word yada. 00:17:16.720 --> 00:17:22.559 And Paul does something with it in Galatians that should stop us cold in our tracks and understanding. 00:17:22.799 --> 00:17:45.759 He is writing to Christians and he starts to say uh in Galatians 4 9, he says, but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 00:17:46.799 --> 00:17:53.039 He says, but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God. 00:17:53.599 --> 00:17:56.240 That word or rather, that phrase or rather. 00:17:56.400 --> 00:17:58.000 But Paul says, actually, let me flip that. 00:17:58.079 --> 00:18:01.279 The main story isn't about, isn't you knowing about God. 00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:04.319 The main story is God knowing you. 00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:09.680 Your grip on him, your understanding of God will vary. 00:18:10.319 --> 00:18:11.599 Paul knows this. 00:18:11.920 --> 00:18:12.960 God knows this. 00:18:13.200 --> 00:18:19.680 That as we go from mountaintop to to valley, that that we will uh have a different understanding of who God is. 00:18:19.920 --> 00:18:27.680 Some weeks that some weeks that's really strong, and then other weeks we can barely hold on uh to who God is and what he has done for us. 00:18:28.480 --> 00:18:33.759 But his grip, God's grip on us and the thoughts that he has Romans 8.29 says, for those he he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his son. 00:20:02.079 --> 00:20:04.160 This is the crucial part of it. 00:20:05.599 --> 00:20:14.079 In scriptures, God's foreknowing, his his him knowing before everything else, is never merely advanced information. 00:20:14.799 --> 00:20:17.279 It carries the whole weight of yada behind it.
