Welcome & Church Announcements

SPEAKER_00

Welcome everyone to another episode of Rush Hour Podcast. We're glad you're joining us today. I'm here with my friends, Brittany and Ashley. Hello, friends.

SPEAKER_04

Hello.

SPEAKER_00

Perfect. Hope we sound all right. We got some news to share with you in a minute, but first we're going to do some announcements for the church. What are the announcements that we have this week?

SPEAKER_03

Trivia night.

SPEAKER_00

Trivia.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, I'm super excited about trivia night. We have one week left to sign up because it is next Saturday, the 14th.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And we've got 10 rounds of trivia. Darren is our host. He is sure to entertain you. And we have bragging rights for year that your team can win. We also have some trophies for you guys. I'll say 2026 Rush Church winners. I don't know. Darren like he he made him.

SPEAKER_00

You should make a crown.

SPEAKER_03

Oh nice.

SPEAKER_05

He is a really good host.

SPEAKER_03

He is. He's good at that. Does a good job.

SPEAKER_00

I went to Trivia this last weekend over at Richmond for their musical. It was

Trivia Night Details

SPEAKER_00

me and Erica and Sally and Drew and Amber Carnes and Kim Long.

SPEAKER_05

Did you win?

SPEAKER_00

Well, no, we didn't. Ten rounds, 10 questions each. We had 87 out of 100, correct.

SPEAKER_04

Wow. That sounds good. That is very good.

SPEAKER_00

You would think that's a winning score.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_00

No. The winning team had 98 out of 100. Oh my word. So felt pretty good about our team.

SPEAKER_05

What kind of questions did you not know?

SPEAKER_00

I don't really know. There's a grab bag one, but the most impressive part was before the night even started. We were sitting at the table waiting for them to begin. We got the round one paper out, and we were like, let's get ready. And I said, Emperor Penguin is gonna be the answer right here. Question number seven, the answer was Emperor Penguin. No, we lost our minds. Hold on. It was wild.

SPEAKER_03

That can't be wrong. Did you know what the round was?

SPEAKER_00

Nope. And that they said the round one was a grab bag, so it was just random trivia. And I was like, we got a chance for the penguins. And then we got to question seven. He's like, What is the largest species of penguin in the world? So you guys were just like screaming your heads off.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

I would have been.

SPEAKER_02

I would have been.

SPEAKER_00

It was hilarious. I was like, I'll never be able to do that again. Right. Randomly. I was like, Emperor Penguin for some reason.

SPEAKER_05

I have peaked in life.

SPEAKER_00

I have peaked. I am done. So yeah, I had a warm-up trivia night and we did pretty good. Okay. So I'm excited about Rush Trivia. Should be good. Should be fun.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. All new questions. So not what you had last year. I like that. You know, it'll be different.

SPEAKER_00

Sometimes people reuse their questions for trivia.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Nope. Not Darren.

SPEAKER_00

Not Darren.

SPEAKER_03

He's much better than the other people. And Brittany, you get to participate this year. Well, we'll see.

SPEAKER_05

I'm on the list to participate. I told my team, you can write me down, but I don't know how much I'll get to play. You bring the knowledge.

SPEAKER_03

You'll get to play. Because Hannah's home for for spring break. So she's going to be my assistant.

SPEAKER_05

Hannah's replacing me? She is.

SPEAKER_03

Not replacing you. She's giving you a chance to enjoy. That was rude. I wasn't expecting to get my feelings hurt.

SPEAKER_00

Wow. We're only three minutes into the episode, and Brittany's already sad. Lovely.

SPEAKER_04

Oh my word.

SPEAKER_00

So Trivia Night's coming up. We have a couple student events, Ohio Teens for Christ, April 3rd and 4th. It's in Columbus. And it's $50 a student and plus some food money you gotta bring. But that covers the hotel. It covers the conference.

Student Trips And Camps

SPEAKER_00

Really good speakers, really good worship. Should be a good time. Sign up at the welcome desk if you are teenagers interested in that. And yeah. Paintball camp signups are open too. Housemill.org. You guys want to go to paintball camp?

SPEAKER_03

I am going.

SPEAKER_00

Is Darren coming again?

SPEAKER_03

No.

SPEAKER_00

No?

SPEAKER_03

No, just me.

SPEAKER_05

I can't go until Axel's old enough. Otherwise, I think he would lose his mind.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_03

That's true. I remember going when Yaron Carter wasn't old enough and he like couldn't participate in the stuff yet. Yeah. And I took him and Eden and Titus. We all went to Tar not Titus, Timmy. We all went to Target and cut chilies. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

It seems like so long ago.

SPEAKER_03

It was. It was a long time ago.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_05

And I think I might get outvoted. I think Levi would probably want to do that.

SPEAKER_00

So bank ball camp's coming up. It's always a good time. Girls camp is in July.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's the week before Kids Jam. So I'm so excited they can be.

SPEAKER_03

I'm so excited they get to go to girls' camp and be a part of Kids Jam.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. The weeks are good this year. So those are some things to be looking for in student ministry. We have that. And I don't know if we had any other announcements at all.

SPEAKER_05

Well, we picked our Kids Jam theme.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Okay. Which I didn't know if you wanted to do that first or talk about this first.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so Kids Jam's coming up. And last year we did like praise. That was kind of the theme, if you will.

SPEAKER_03

Right. So let me tell a quick backstory. Kids Jam replaced VBS. So Kids

Kids Jam Theme: Glow

SPEAKER_03

Jam is our own VBS. We do now do our own curriculum, our own programming, all of our own stuff. So we're not going through what everybody else goes through, you know, alone county. So it's different. So it gives the kids a different experience for the summer instead of being like, I'm going to another week of VBS with the same stuff. You know, Kids Jam is high energy, high work, you know, high impact worship, lots of games, lots of loud, lots of lights. And so last year, Kids Jam presented praise. That was our big first start. And then this year we had our staff meeting and decided on Kids Jam presents glow.

SPEAKER_00

Everything's going to glow in the dark. We're doing like a glow in the dark theme. Neon.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, everything's going to be neon. We're going to turn the lights off. You'll glow. I can't wait to get a nail new nail design. I was going to say your nails look now like they're ready for glow.

SPEAKER_00

My nails are not ready for anything.

SPEAKER_03

Mine either.

SPEAKER_00

But so that'll be that's exciting.

SPEAKER_03

It is, yeah. I'm super excited about it.

SPEAKER_00

Glow.

SPEAKER_03

I already ordered like all the black lights we need for the sanctuary already.

SPEAKER_05

Wow. All right. I know this because she had them in the office with all the lights off.

SPEAKER_03

Well, what you don't know is I ordered more and they're coming today.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_05

We'll test them out.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Very nice.

SPEAKER_05

That's all the announcements that I have.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, no more. All right. No more announcements. Well, those are all exciting things. Also, like I said, hope we sound good. We are in our we're in Ashley's office right now, recording this podcast. We've been at Calvary using their podcast room and their equipment and things, and it was really good and appreciative of them letting us come all the time and use their stuff, but we have our own stuff now, and so we can record and put out information whenever the heck we want.

unknown

Whoop, whoop.

SPEAKER_05

So that's

New Recording Gear And Format

SPEAKER_05

so fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. We kind of dialed in the microphones, been playing around with some of the things that we can do sound-wise and all the things.

SPEAKER_03

So give us a little bit of feel. What can we hear?

SPEAKER_00

We can program different things, and then when like Britney has a really interesting thought, we can play this. And you'll know when you hear that sound, Britney's got something to say.

SPEAKER_03

Nice. Nice. We all need our own little thing.

SPEAKER_00

We do. I can put all kinds of sounds on here. So can even record our own sounds and use those.

SPEAKER_05

Oh well, we know that I'll be the one recording all the sounds. Yeah, sound effects.

SPEAKER_00

Because I'm really good at sound effects. Yes. Brittany will do all the sound effects for us. Nice. So those are just some cool things.

SPEAKER_03

Can we applaud those sound effects?

SPEAKER_00

Nice. We are famous.

SPEAKER_02

Wow.

SPEAKER_03

We've got people who like us. Thank you. Thank you.

unknown

Wow. All right.

SPEAKER_03

This is gonna be fun.

SPEAKER_00

We're gonna have a good time. And now we can. I'm excited because we can just ask people if we want to have a guest on the podcast.

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

We can do that. I can also, there's Bluetooth setting on this, so it can connect right to my phone if we wanted to call somebody that's not even around. We can do an interview on the phone and come straight through here and sound just like they're in the room with us.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, we just call someone right now.

SPEAKER_00

We could call someone right now.

SPEAKER_05

We could. We should call Haley. We could call Haley. I don't know. I don't know anyone we could call without saying. Every time some of my friends call and it's close to this time, and I'm like, oh hi, you're live with rush hour, and they're like, wait, what? Gotcha. Start freaking out.

SPEAKER_02

That would be awesome. Like, just kidding. But you can come sit on the big brown bean bag with a nice big yellow duck behind you.

SPEAKER_00

We are in the children's master's office. Sounds pretty good. But we're excited. Yeah. So we were already shoot well, we're gonna uh talk about today about the Bible a little bit. Um we're gonna talk about well, first off, I guess we'll talk about our staff Bible study that we do. We have a staff Bible study on Tuesday mornings. So we've been going through well, the entire Bible.

SPEAKER_05

I can't remember how

Bible Study Approach And Goals

SPEAKER_05

long we've been doing that.

SPEAKER_03

It's been over a year. I know that. Because I noticed that John was having people come in for Bible study and on staff, I'm like, at first I thought, well, I can't do that because I work, you know, during the day. And I was like, John, like I I want Bible study. What do I need to do? He's like, Where do you want to start? I'm like, I want to start from the beginning. Yeah, and then you were like, Well, I want to join. Yeah, and then you know, Cody's like, Well, I know the Bible, so I'm joining. Right.

SPEAKER_00

I do like the Bible.

SPEAKER_03

So yeah. And Katrina said Genesis felt like it took like three years. Yeah, it was a long time.

SPEAKER_00

It's 50 chapters. People forget. It's a lot. Genesis is long. Usually think of Genesis, you're like, Oh, God made creation and the flood and some other stuff.

SPEAKER_04

Right. And then it's over. No, no, it was really long.

SPEAKER_05

It was really cool. I thought, oh, I'm not gonna like that. Like, that doesn't sound like that's that book's gonna be interesting, and it was it was great. It's one of my favorites now.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So we do that on Tuesday mornings, and well, John kind of challenged you guys to do like a retelling of the last book that we've gone through, kind of. And the purpose is like sometimes we feel I don't know if you ever feel like you pick up the Bible and you read it and you're opening it up to the middle of like an instruction manual and you're just lost. And it's like a piece of a puzzle that you're not really sure where this goes. So the reason we kind of did this Bible study is to be like the Bible is a story, and it's all together and it's all connected, and to be able to point to a Bible on a table and be like, I can retell you this story in like a quick synopsis and tell you what it's about is important. And so we don't want to just read it and then say we read it and then not remember anything or not be able to tell people what it's about, or right. So we've been studying and yes, this is kind of retell what we've read in the last book, which was the book of Ruth. So we thought it'd be fun to have Brittany and Ashley tell you about the book of Ruth on the podcast to see how well they know it since we just went through it.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I will say that I have been practicing retelling for a while. I tell these guys about it all the time because when I go home, you know, I live on the compound. So everybody's there for family dinners a lot of times, especially Tuesday nights. We always have tacos together. So we'll have Tuesday Bible study. And then when I come, we're sitting around the dinner table. I'm like, okay, this is what we learned today. And a lot of times they're sitting there staring at me like you need that sound with you whenever you tell stories. I know, but yeah, every time I'm like, okay, let me tell you about this. You won't believe this, right? So I have been practicing my storytelling. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then I go into John and

Setting The Stage For Ruth

SPEAKER_03

I ask him questions about the Bible stories. Like, I'm like, okay, was this how what they do there? And then I get them mixed up.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And he's like, no, no, no, no. That story was that one. That story was that one.

SPEAKER_00

It's important to keep the stories as they are and not mix all the stories together.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, you know.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But like David's building the ark, and you're like, nope, that is not true.

SPEAKER_03

That's not it.

SPEAKER_00

That's not it.

SPEAKER_03

Noah parted the waters. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Noah was on the waters in the ark. So, but yeah, the the idea of reading your Bible, you you want to read your Bible and get something from it. You don't want to just read your Bible to say you read it, if it makes sense. Right. If you read it and you're like, Oh, I read my Bible every day this week, and you're like, What did you read? I don't remember. Well, that didn't do anybody any good. So the idea is to like, even if it takes you a while to get through a thing, like take your time going through it, make sure you get something from it. Don't rush through just to say, Oh, I finished my reading plan or I finished my thing. If you're not taking something from it, then I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, the Bible is and when you retell these stories, when you're telling people like Brittany does, she's like, Let me tell you the story. And she doesn't use she doesn't need to know all the details of like the specific names of places or people's sometimes people's names are important.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But the the little tiny details, it's not important to get all of that correct. If you can tell the story so people understand what's happening in the bigger picture of the Bible. So that's what I want you guys to do with Ruth today. Like there's lots of names in the book of Ruth, lots of places that they go. It's it's a good thing. I remember three of them. Oh, that's good.

SPEAKER_05

Well, that's all you need.

SPEAKER_00

And so remember the Bible is a collection of books. It's all put together. 66 books in our Bible, different styles of writing, poetry, narrative, wisdom, law, you know, some prophecy.

SPEAKER_03

Do you think like the like is also separated by like minor and major prophets? Like, is that considered the different books too?

SPEAKER_00

Major, you got major prophets and you got minor prophets. Do you know what makes them major and what makes them minor? What makes

Gleaning Laws And Boaz’s Field

SPEAKER_00

somebody a major prophet? Like you have Jeremiah, he was a major prophet, and then you have a minor prophet like Obadiah. Why do we why do we call it major and minor?

SPEAKER_03

Bigger things were done.

SPEAKER_00

It's Jeremiah's a lot longer than the book of Obadiah. Okay. The length of the books and so like stuff like that. So don't think of it as like they had more important job. Well, that was gonna be my guess.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So that's what I thought.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I just thought like more things were done in his life than maybe.

SPEAKER_00

Right. They wrote it all down, so more happened. Major and minor prophets, not based on like Jeremiah's more important than somebody else, but the idea of right. Yeah. So cool. Yeah, the Bible's interesting. So let's just jump into it, talk about Ruth a little bit. Tell us how the story begins.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so story time with Britney and Ashley. Oh no, that wasn't a good sound effect.

SPEAKER_00

It was. I'm happy for you guys.

SPEAKER_03

All right, so the book of Ruth. We've got Ruth, we've got Naomi, we've got Opa. I can say her name. I always think of Orpah. Opa. Orpah I think it's Orpa.

SPEAKER_00

Orpa is the correct.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So Ruth and Orpah was Naomi's daughter-in-laws.

SPEAKER_05

Well, if you rewind a little bit, Naomi and her husband, don't remember his name. They fled Jerusalem. Bethlehem. Bethlehem. It's okay. Fled Bethlehem because there was a famine. Yep. And so they went to a different place. Moab. Moab. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

What did you guys know in places?

SPEAKER_05

And they had two sons.

SPEAKER_03

Who I do not know. Don't know their names.

SPEAKER_05

It doesn't matter. And they married two Moabite women. Right. So not Israelite. Yeah, not in their line.

SPEAKER_03

Not they should have.

SPEAKER_05

And then they died.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. So they died. All the men died. All the men died. Only the women survived in this story. Until we get too a little bit further. Okay. Yeah. So then Ruth was like, not Ruth, I'm sorry. Naomi was like, I'm going to go back home to Bethlehem. Bethlehem. And you guys stay and go marry somebody else because I'm too old. I can't have another son to give you. And if I did, by the time he was ready for marry, you guys would be too old. Yeah. So they were just like, she's like, just go back. She was freeing them basically from her care. Orpah, sure. She went on. She's like, okay, I'm out. Yeah. She was like, thank you. Yep. I'm gonna go find a husband. But Ruth was dedicated to Naomi. Yeah. She was she wanted to stay with her. And Naomi even tried to get her, like, no, just go, just go. And Ruth is like, no. And I love this line because this is what John really focused on is where you go, I will go. Your God, I will serve. And so basically, she was saying that even though I wasn't in that line, I now accept your God and I want to serve your God. And so therefore,

Kinsman Redeemer Explained

SPEAKER_03

that made her you know, able to she's now is an Israelite.

SPEAKER_05

I mean, right, she's now accepted by accepting.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So so they move on.

SPEAKER_05

So they go back home to Bethlehem. And okay, so they have this thing where I'm never gonna remember what they're called, but basically there's a guy that owns a field. Okay, and then people harvest that field, and then those people leave a little bit of grain in certain areas out in the corners or whatever.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, like the four corners.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and then people that are less than or don't have as much, right? They come through and they pick the grain, and that's what they survive on. Yeah. Which at this time was during judges. So like it was really, really crazy how everything was. Like it was really dangerous for especially women to be out alone. So Ruth was going to gather the grain for her and Naomi. And she just happened to pick a really good field.

SPEAKER_03

So yes, and this field belonged to Boaz. Boaz, who we think of as Sean Connery.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, he's like a really tall, handsome guy on a stallion. Yes. He had long, flowy.

SPEAKER_00

He comes in to save big arm muscles.

SPEAKER_05

Wait, Sean Connery had short gray hair. He had short gray hair.

SPEAKER_00

So that's who I picture when I read this story. I've always pictured Sean Connery.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

As Boaz. I don't know why. I feel like he's like an older, sophisticated guy. He's got these fields of grain and everything. He's so nice and friendly. And I think, yes, Ruth, over here, my field.

SPEAKER_05

And so you are sniff here. Who could be schnafe here? That was really good. That was good. Not that great, but I mean it's a lot better than I could do.

SPEAKER_00

And Sean Connery. Welcome to Rush Church. Where we talk about Ruth and Boaz. All right. Okay. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So moving on. Also. So go ahead.

SPEAKER_00

Besides Sean Connery, Boaz also, like, I think it could be there's a movie. There's like a romantic movie.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Did I tell you guys about who else was?

SPEAKER_05

Oh, the letters to Juliet? Yeah. Uh-huh. I'll never remember the movie.

SPEAKER_00

Letters to Juliet. Letters to Juliet. And like they're in Italy and they're all in the fans. And there's this guy who owns, like, I don't know. I think that's a good thing.

SPEAKER_03

He comes in on a horse. Like a beautiful story.

SPEAKER_05

I've never seen the movie, but all I can picture during this story is that Erica's like, Cody, let's watch a nice romantic movie. And she

The Threshing Floor Moment

SPEAKER_05

like looks over him and she's like, What are you thinking about? And you're like, Oh, that guy looks like Boaz.

SPEAKER_00

To be clear, the scripture doesn't give us a description of Boaz whatsoever and what he looks like. So I am free to just imagine what I would.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's great. I love that because I think that kind of helps us remember the stories. Yeah. So okay, moving on. Keep going. Okay. Yep.

SPEAKER_05

Do you want me to keep going?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. So Boaz goes up to Ruth and he's like, listen, it's dangerous out here. You're safe in my field. I only want you in my field. Like he's like, girl, you stay here. No, oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_03

And in her mind, she's thinking, you got it going on. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

She's like, Oh, I'll okay, I'll stay here. So then she like runs home and tells Naomi. And Naomi's like, good news, we're related to him, which evidently is a good thing back in that time.

SPEAKER_03

That time.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, you wanted to find people you're related to. What's he called?

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_05

Kingsman. No. Kingship. Nothing to do with kings. I keep saying king.

SPEAKER_00

You said family. Kin. Kin Kinship Redeemer. Kinsman Redeemer.

SPEAKER_03

Kinsman Redeemer. Dang it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_03

I remembered Redeemer. Okay. That's what I remember.

SPEAKER_00

Basically, all you need to know is he's known as the family redeemer.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yes. He's the Redeemer.

SPEAKER_00

You don't want to say kinship? You can say family. Same thing.

SPEAKER_05

He's also a bachelor, just to be clear.

SPEAKER_03

So Naomi wanted Ruth to go to this feast, right? He was having he was at a green party. Oh, great party. Yes, this is your favorite part of the story.

SPEAKER_05

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So forgot about your favorite part of the story.

SPEAKER_05

I did. I forgot. I wasn't prepared. Let me make sure I do it justice. Okay. So all the men, all the grain leaders, all the guys that are established with grain. Okay. They get together every year, I'm assuming, for a grain party. Okay. Which nobody else is allowed to go. Like no women are allowed there. And they sit around and they're like tossing up their grain and like, look how much yield I got, you know? And they all like brag to each other. No women. Yeah, that's what they do. They're like party.

SPEAKER_03

Do we have a sound?

SPEAKER_05

They party all night.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing for grain.

SPEAKER_05

They party all night at the grain party. Okay. So Naomi is like, Ruth, go get on some clean clothes. Like, clean up, girl. And then you're gonna go find Boaz. Yeah, you're gonna go to the party. She's like, okay. And he's gonna sit at his feet. Yes. So Boaz has to also sleep by his grain. He must have partied too hard. I'm not sure. But he had to go. He went and laid on his grain,

Legal Redemption And Lineage

SPEAKER_05

in his around his grain. I don't know. He's like protecting it. I'm not sure why he was there.

SPEAKER_00

You and the grain party and the grain bed. Just get to the point.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so he had a blanket over him, over his face.

SPEAKER_00

He's comfy.

SPEAKER_05

Yes, he's comfy, he's laid back. And so she goes up and like uncovers his feet.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_05

Right. Which lays at them. And lays down, which is like a sign of respect or something.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. So what we figured out or what we learned was back in the day when you uncovered his feet, the man's feet, and laid at the it was basically your surrendering, right? Like your yeah, I honor you. This is this it's it's a it's an honorable thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we haven't we don't understand it at all.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but like because it's not in our culture, right?

SPEAKER_05

So Boaz wakes up and he's like, Oh, Ruth, thank you. Like this is so amazing that you're doing this, you know. Like he receives the honor, like he accepts it. Yeah. It's a good thing. Oh, it's a good thing, it's not weird, it's not weird, no, and then he says, Stay here. Like he lets her stay there, but then he wakes her up and tells her she has to get out of there before anybody notices that she's at the grain party because no women.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

So that's not the main part of the story. We've gotten has nothing to do with the whole story.

SPEAKER_00

So we had Naomi and Ruth back in Bethlehem. They're don't have anybody to support them. It's widow, and you know, it's hard. And so they find this field and they're like, Oh, we're gonna go gather the grain of the field. Because they're allowed to. It's written in the law, actually elsewhere, Exodus, Deuteronomy, where like if you're in Israel, you leave the corners of your fields for widows and orphans and the poor to come and take whatever's left over so they have something to eat. So this was a normal thing. And Boaz is doing what he's supposed to do by letting her be in the field, and then they meet. Oh, that's the redeemer, go back and see him. And Boaz is like, Yes, I can be the redeemer. That way, what's next?

SPEAKER_03

So then Boaz knows that there's somebody else ahead of him to redeem the family.

SPEAKER_00

Boaz being the good guy again. He's like, actually, I want to, but But I gotta I gotta ask this guy over here.

SPEAKER_03

So he goes to his cousin or whoever he is, you know, and he lets them know that he has this land that he can inherit from

Retelling Scripture With Confidence

SPEAKER_03

Naomi's husband. And the guy at first is like, yeah, I'll take it. But then Boaz is like, but it also inherits a mother-in-law and a wife. Yeah, you know, so you have to take on two more women that you're the guy's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

SPEAKER_05

I like that like he already has a wife. Okay, and then he's like going to town, and he's like, Oh, sweet, I can inherit more land than like also you'd have to bring home another wife and her mother-in-law, and her mother-in-law. He's like, I feel like my wife's gonna be really annoyed if I do this.

SPEAKER_00

It's not in the Bible, but it could be a side story, I guess.

SPEAKER_03

In our minds. So, anyways, again. Stephen says no, yeah. So that basically him saying no gave Boaz the authority to then take on Ruth and Naomi in that land, and that was great. They lived happily ever after.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, they had a kid, couple kids. And yeah, so oh my gosh, I forgot the end.

SPEAKER_00

You forgot the end?

SPEAKER_05

Give me a hint.

SPEAKER_00

Oh Ruth shows up later on somewhere in genealogies because she's what?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, she's related to Jesus now. Oh there we go. Yeah, we knew that. So I thought you were scared of trying to make me remember the kid's name. Right. No, remember what's the kid's name?

SPEAKER_05

I can't remember. It doesn't matter. No.

SPEAKER_03

I mean it might, but the re the whole thing is the purpose though that we figured out of this story in Ruth is it's us. We are Ruth and Jesus is our redeemer. And so we were not we were not Israelites, we were not in the line of Christ. But because Christ is our redeemer and we accept him, now we are redeemed and we are part of his family forever. So moral of the story of Ruth.

SPEAKER_00

There you go. Moral of the story,

Providence In Ordinary Life

SPEAKER_00

moral of the story. Yeah, and it was they had a kid, a son. They named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse. Oh, David. So Obed.

SPEAKER_05

What was the name of the sister-in-law? Orpah. Orpa. Orpa. Okay. It sounds like a whale. Yeah. Orpah. Orpa.

SPEAKER_03

So, yeah, we can now be taught a story in Bible study and retell it. And I'll tell you, when John first asked us to do that, I was sick to my stomach. Because he gave us a little bit of heads up. And I'm like, oh my gosh, do I even remember? Because we first did it with creation, didn't we? With oh did we do the Genesis one? Yeah. And I was like, oh my word, how do we? Because we did that with Katrina too. I'm like, can I? But then the more that we started going on and retelling, I'm like, oh, this did read, you know, I did that did sink in. I do know what I'm talking about.

SPEAKER_00

Just tell the story. Details.

SPEAKER_05

I know. I hope when people hear us tell a story, they're like, oh, well, I can do that. Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

People love stories.

SPEAKER_03

Brittany and Ashley style, you can do. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Cody is a little more detail-oriented.

SPEAKER_03

Well, he also studied the Bible in college.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I have a degree.

SPEAKER_05

You do? Mm-hmm. It's about Bible stuff. I have a degree. Yeah. Muscles. Oh. Well.

SPEAKER_00

She just flexed at me.

SPEAKER_05

That's what that sounded like. But that's not what I meant.

SPEAKER_00

Oh. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Nice.

SPEAKER_00

Degree in muscles. She's a bodybuilder.

SPEAKER_03

I had a degree in camp ministry. Camp ministry. That sounds so much fun.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. It was. Mine's boring.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, Ruth is a good book. It's only four chapters. I'd say go read that. Keep in mind. See if we did a good job telling it.

SPEAKER_05

Our story might have been longer than if you just actually read it.

SPEAKER_03

True. But when you read it, think about how we described it. And it'll sink in. It'll sink in even more.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Think of when you when Boaz is introduced, picture like a Jesus type figure. I guess you could say. Boaz redeemed the outsider Ruth, Jesus is re redeemed us. And it's a cool comparison of the two. And so Yeah, I think the coolest one of the coolest parts about the books of Ruth is that I think that the phone's ringing. Maybe you should answer that. You can kind of answer that. And then we will the book of Ruth is cool because pretty good.

SPEAKER_05

So we haven't really

Closing, Listener Input, And Prayer

SPEAKER_05

thought how is this gonna work all the way through. But this is definitely one of the things we didn't think about.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, phones.

SPEAKER_05

Not having a phone in the room. It's okay.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know if they can even hear the phone ringing, but I actually about fell over trying to get to it.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, that was probably better. We should start videotaping this because most definitely. They're like, what's so funny about the phone? Okay. Ashley on the floor. That was that was funny.

SPEAKER_00

One more thing about Ruth, and then we'll we'll pray and be done. Um because it's just throughout the whole story, you know, things just kind of seem to line up. And God's not really talked about a whole lot. He doesn't like not like the other parts of the Bible where God shows up and does something really amazing, like part of the Red Sea or you know, the plagues in Egypt. You have all these big God moments where he shows up in this story. It's just everyday life, but God's still working in the background, like Ruth's where she needs to be in this field, happens to be Boaz, just so happens to be the family redeemer. And so you you see God working in the background of of people's lives, and I think sometimes it might not be obvious in our lives that God's but he's he's still there, he's still working, even if we don't feel like it or we don't notice it all the time. So that's what I always like to see when I see the book of Ruth, I guess you'd say. Yeah, thoughts on that? No thoughts?

SPEAKER_03

No, I like that. No, I love it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, perfect.

SPEAKER_03

Because I see I feel like you look back in your life and you think about how you were somewhere, and by coincidence, something happened that was great, that changed your life, you know. And that's yeah, I love that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Because this story starts off pretty tragic, you know.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, she loses all the men in her life.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, husband dies, two sons die. Like poor Naomi. And like there's a time where you like she could have been like, that's it. I'm just gonna stay here and whatever happens, happens. Yeah, but she goes back to Bethlehem, takes Ruth with her, and then they end up going through this whole series of being redeemed. And so even when it seems like tragedy strikes after tragedy, you know, hang in there and try to because God works all things together for good for those that love him. And so I kind of see that verse in this story too. And the key word when when we see that, we're like, well, God works all things for the good, and you know, that's good, but that word like works all things for the good. Sometimes it takes longer than we'd like. And so working when you work towards something, it takes time to get there. I think the same thing's true with God that we have to be patient and realize even if it seems silent, if it seems distant, it seems like God, are you still listening? Do you see this? And He is, he's there. Just be patient and things. So all right, we will end this episode on that note, and we'll be back with you next time. If you have any suggestions or topics that you want to hear about, we still have the box. Be glad to hear those and put the put them in the box at breakfast on Sunday mornings.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah. Or just email us or pull us aside and ask us what tell us.

SPEAKER_05

I think it's better if it's in a text or an email, because otherwise we might forget.

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah. If you see us in person, tell us, and I'll and then tell me to put my phone out and I'll type it in there and send it to my friends Brittany and Ashley, so we can talk about it on the podcast.

SPEAKER_02

We're all friends.

SPEAKER_00

All right, let's pray. Lord, thank you for this day. Thanks for this church and this place that we can do things like this and have conversations and uh do cool things on like trivia night and take trips and and do all kinds of things. Uh, and hopefully we do them to glorify you, and we do these things to uh expand your kingdom. And yeah, thank you for the opportunities that you give us. And so for all those listening, I ask that you be with them and whatever's going on in their lives this week. And Jesus let me pray. Amen.

SPEAKER_04

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

All right. This was fun. Uh yeah. Great. And we will continue again. We'll get all the things worked out. Ashley won't be falling over chairs when the phone rings anymore, but we'll get it all figured out. And so until next time, thanks for listening to Rush Hour.

unknown

Uh-uh.
